Mori Ogai; kindness and philosophy.
Mori is a very interesting character, and with that it comes the complexity of the character, since he is a complex character and not too much is known about him, its pretty often people in the fandom mischaracterizes Mori, so let’s talk about his kindness first.
Tumblr media
In the official BSD guidebook, it is said that his strength is kindness and that his weakness is that he is uncertain whether he truly has the confidence of his subordinates.
Kindness is being selfless, caring, considerate and generous, is mori any of those things…? Actually yes. First let’s go with the selfless definition.
Selfless is being more concerned with the needs and wishes of others than with our own, unselfishness. Mori has shown to be concerned about Yokohama and the port mafia more than being selfish by just focusing on own needs, he has textually became the boss and therefore slave of the own organization, everything he does is for the better of Yokohama and the pm, Mori even helped Atsushi in his debut appearance despite it not giving any benefits to himself, there was no need to save Tanizaki and help Atsushi at all, yet he did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is caring towards those who are in the pm, even though some may die in missions he sent them to, he is shown to be sad when they die WITHOUT a reason, more than a hundred of his subordinates died because of a mission and he griefs over them because there wasn’t a good reason for them to die, after all mori is called “He who fell out to the optimal solution” isn’t he?
Tumblr media
He is considerate towards (surprise) the pm and Yokohama, he puts Yokohama above EVERYTHING, even above personal wishes or needs, not to mention that he was generous to Higuchi admitting that Higuchi wasn’t suitable for the job but yet let her stay.
Now that the kindness topic is off the table, let’s go with his mindset and philosophy.
The philosophy that would suit him the best would be Niccolò Machiavelli’s philosophy. Niccolò Machiavelli thought that the end justified the means fully, he also thought that it was best to be both loved and feared, yet the two rarely go along, and anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in loved, but why? Because if people love you, they can still do things against you or your ideals, but if they fear you, they won’t.
Despite Niccolò not mentioning the word ‘philosophy’ in The prince or The discourses the word philosopher does appear (once) in The prince and 3 times in The discourses, Niccolò is seen as a philosopher himself by a lot of people, lets dive into his philosophy.
Niccolò thought that it would be excellent if a ruler had morals and all good things and none of the bad, but since it’s the nature of life that you cant have or practice al those qualities all of the time, a ruler must take care to avoid the disgrace that goes with the kind of failings that could make him lose his position, just as Mori thinks; the end justifies the means, if a ruler had morals it would be good, but it can’t be possible or it will lead to failure, it just isn’t possible, it isn’t affective.
Mori isn’t good on terms of morality, which may be contradictive to the first part where we were discussing kindness, however Mori is kind not because its just natural and no other intentions than good, he manipulates those people he is kind to, though not always, most of the time he manipulates. This is related to another thing Niccolò thought, was that you could be good, have morals, but not too much because its ineffective, you cannot be good because for you to be a good leader most of the time you have to be cruel, going back to the love and fear, you cannot control how or who people love but you can control who they fear. Have goodness is good, its good but its simply not affective, no matter how much people love you or claim they do, they can always lie, so why not lie to them too? Its better to be feared than lied that they supposedly love you but hate you and start conspiracies. People are cruel, selfish and deceiving, so why not be too?
A lot of people in bsd fear mori, others admire him, but almost none hate him, that shows how good of a leader mori is, and despite dazai and yosano hate him, yosano still fears him, and dazai didn’t always hate mori, dazai just started to hate mori because of what mori did with oda, yet dazai recognizes that it was the most logical solution, the only reason he ‘hates’ and I don’t think it can even be defined like that, I would say that its resentment, dazai wouldn’t kill mori, dazai has no wishes to become or even come back to the port mafia, and again that shows how good of a leader mori is.

reason of living: akutagawa ryūnosuke
debatably, bungou stray dogs is easily the most existentialist anime out there, as the main premise of existentialism (in a rough sense) - that reason of living is something individual to man, is an underlying compartment of the series, making it as awe-inspiring as it is. each character is seen to either have, or be striving towards finding their distinct reason for living. now, i wanted to retrospect a bit into akutagawa's character and how his reason affected him, his actions, morals - as well as how it possibly shifted (especially in recent chapters of the manga and anime episodes). keep in mind that at i am just laying down my opinion and observations of akutagawa`s character - some things may be fairly obvious, some uncertain or not matching your opinion, which is why i leave space for conclusion, theory, discussion.
pre-mafia
Tumblr media
generally, we know little about akutagawa`s life before the mafia, other than small snippets shown throughout the main manga as well as in beast (although beast is an AU, it can still effectively aid in understanding his character in the canon universe). as akutagawa's companions were annihilated, it seemed that he had no reason to live. where, as we all probably know, this soon happened afterwards. from then on, everything changed.
mafia
Tumblr media
after that night in the forest, akutagawa's life completely shifted - or moreso, he got a new life. his whole new reason of living being - pleasing dazai, getting validation from the person who gave his life a new meaning. exploring the relationship and dynamic between these two is a whole another post, which is why i shall keep it short. now, i would like to note that even if akutagawa has an unhealthy attachment to dazai, and is being emotionally manipulated by him - he is very much sensible of it. in fact, akutagawa is remarkably self-aware and perceptive, especially of the people around him, just more subtly, through his cold layer of stoicism. he is not the cold-blooded murderer with no sense of morality that many like to paint him as. yes, he is intently focused on achieving dazai's approval, pursuing that ideal in a way familiar to himself. he knows that it is not what is considered "right" by general moral rules, but he does not do much about it, as his reason of living would then diminish. dazai leaves him with a looming sense of inferiority, as he feels he is worthless no matter what he does, unless he is to achieve dazai's attention and approval. this sense of inferiority haunts him, and guides his recklesness and death-or-glory actions.
he sees the ethical issues in his own actions, and he knows there is a better life for him. he just doesn't pursue it. this is also portrayed well in his relationship with kyouka, which could have been yet another repetition of the abuse cycle started by mori and continued by dazai - but it was not, as kyouka found the world of light. he is even happy for her, as we can see. this is one of the few snippets where we can see his sensibility when it comes to others. when he stated "i knew a man with the same eyes as yours", referring to himself, in a way, he sees that he also could`ve found the world of light. but at that point, it seemed to be too late... or at least that is what he thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
akutagawa doesn't hate atsushi. he sees him as a reflection of himself, himself if he had a different reason of living, if he met dazai a bit later, if he pursued the world of light. he is jealous of him in a sense, yes, but he does not blame him for the fact that he didn't get dazai's approval as many like to speculate. atsushi is the first person who challenges akutagawa's "way", philosophy of living. as he sees himself in him, he fulfills their promise of not killing anyone for 6 months... perhaps because of a faint hope for the world of light? he holds onto this even as a vampire, which shows his pure determination. and it makes me think, that he did not go and protect atsushi only because of dazai, as often speculated, due to the points stated beforehand. as dazai stated: “Akutagawa—he’s like a sword without a sheath.” Dazai grinned from ear to ear. “He’ll surely become the Mafia’s strongest skill user in the not-so-distant future, but for now he needs someone who can teach him how to put that sword away.”
perhaps, atsushi is that person for him rather than dazai.
chapter 88 and vampirism
Tumblr media
as stated beforehand, akutagawa obviously does not go to save atsushi only due to his wish to be approved by dazai. there is something deeper underlying, and we have seen numerous times before that akutagawa genuinely cares about, and admires atsushi in the same way he admires and is happy for kyouka - although he would not admit it explicitly, of course. akutagawa fights fukuchi alongside atsushi, leaving himself in a completely vulnerable state, in a simple wish as to redeem, or prove himself in a way. to fulfill his meaning. he is in a special rush to do so even so because of his lung disease, which has a severe impact on the intensity and ruthlesness of his actions throughout entirety of the series. he lays his life down, but he does not go down without a fight. he stays true to his purpose...until his last moments.
at his last moment, in the given panel, however, something changes. we see a different vision of akutagawa. as he lets go of his coat, and is able to manifest his ability without it, i would say that his reason shifted. he states "i don't need words, but only actions", which is the most important sentence in understanding his character and development if you ask me. words being dazai`s words of approval, which he lets go of, like the coat he gave him. a new reason emerges, "actions". he does not need dazai anymore. he only needs himself, raw. this is further emphasized as his coat is lost in the sea by atsushi, who he gave it to. there is no reason to hold on to the past anymore... as a new era emerges.
a new era where akutagawa is not alive, apparently. he is a vampire. however, we can still see that he holds on to some of principles that caused him to change in the first place, such as not killing aya, and keeping the promise he and atsushi made. even when not concious of his actions and controlled by fukuchi, he still holds on to it. which leads me to believe, that there is truly hope for him. atsushi shares the same line of thought... as his perception of akutagawa gradually shifts to a positive one, which is why he wants him to snap out of his vampirism. atsushi understands akutagawa to the core, as they are two sides of the same coin. which is why he hopes for him. if possible, i wish for him to let go of the vampire curse and continue on developing his new reason of living... his new life. we can only long for that at this moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we have seen the gradual evolution of akutagawa's character throughout the series in terms of seeking his reason of living - something that is central to each character in bungou stray dogs. which leads me to end this post with what dazai stated to kyouka, which quite well describes his, and all of the other characters ordeals in striving to find a reason to live:
Your anguish isn’t yours alone. What should one do, when what they want to be isn’t what they’re best at? Everyone fights, searching for the correct way to live their lives. What do they seek by fighting? How ought they live? No one can say. All we have is the right to waver. Like stray dogs that have hit rock bottom.

Nikolai has nightmares about being a bird stuck in a cage in a cluttered house, scared of being forgotten with the other trash thrown about. Fyodor knows this is a reoccurring nightmare and made a music box for him to use when he wakes up in a panic.

NIKOLAI ANALYSIS!!!! also some Fyolai analysis
To talk about Nikolai, the first thing about him that should be talked about is his views on freedom
Tumblr media
What Nikolai is meant to represent is that there are no limits for humans, that humans can do anything, cruel or good things, humans can do it, what Nikolai thinks is that there is no such thing as ‘no human could be capable of killing their friend’ or that ‘no human is capable to be free’, because for Nikolai what the society thinks and puts limits to what a human can do or can’t is being in a cage. The limits being the consequences to crimes, and thoughts being what society thinks of someone, the judgement. That’s where his comparison comes from, a bird in a cage is what humans are, and a bird out of the cage is something that humans most of the times don’t dare to.
Tumblr media
(ignore the quality pls)
Even though he is drawn to justice, he still chooses to support the DOA because of the evil in it, as I said before, he wants to prove that there are no limits for humans, humans can do and are capable of making very cruel things, however most of the people don’t do that because of the fear to consequences and because of morality, being why Nikolai says that it is brainwashing, because it is imposed since someone is very young, which leads that when people are older, they have that morality, being a gray, white or even sometimes black morality, it doesn’t matter because those people still have that morality imposed by society, it is imposed by family, schools and even friends.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Nikolai says that the cage is the skull, the logic behind it is that in the skull the brain and everything else comes to work together, the brain thinks of things even though you don’t want to think that, the brain is responsible for everything in your body, and therefore the skull is the cage, the skull is a cage for everyone, and the only way that someone ends up being free is being dead, once you die you don’t have to worry about anything at all, you cant move, you cant think, you are alone once you die because once you die everything is black for you, which is equal as freedom.
His quote “we can’t leave that warm, wet hell” refers to the body and brain.
Let’s go now to the second topic and how it is very related to the first one.
Tumblr media
This may seem like it is not related to freedom, however for Nikolai, freedom truly is when you don’t have to think about morality, when you don’t have feelings attached to morality, when you don’t have anything attached to morality, that’s truly freedom for him, however how is it related to losing yourself? Nikolai doesn’t want to be limited to what society thinks, however he is, he isn’t free yet and he cant be totally free when he is alive, that’s why he opposes to God as a scream to be free and fights to lose himself, he doesn’t want to be limited by his personality and become predictable, what Nikolai wishes is to not be able to feel guilty at all, that’s part of the freedom he wants and considers, he wants to be able to have different thoughts, commit crimes and do things considered as unthinkable by society without being able to feel guilt.
Tumblr media
It’s more than obvious that he wishes to not be aware of the cage he is in, birds die not knowing the freedom they could have had, not knowing that they are prisoners living in a cage; that’s what he wishes and why he is jealous of Tonan, Tonan is not aware that he is in a cage, he would die not knowing that he is a prisoner, dying happily inside of the cage, never being free at all.
Let’s go to his other philosophical way to think.
What do I think his philosophical way to think is? Absurdist.
The best way to be free would be dying, committing suicide, however Albert Camus thought that the act of escaping our lives does not counter the absurd and rather in the act of ending our lives, our lives become only more absurd, how does this connect to Nikolai’s mentality?
Nikolai knows that ending our lives would be the most easy way to be free, however it would also not prove what he wants to prove, becoming the act of suicide a absurd thing, which is why he ends up not dying, the plan was for him to really be killed, however he escapes to prove what he wants, that a human can do ‘unthinkable’ things to become free, that a human can do anything, there is no limit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s go now to his relationship with Fyodor because it is very mischaracterized, the topics about fyolai will be; Nikolai’s obsession and wish to kill Fyodor, how Fyodor does NOT care for Nikolai and doesn’t see him as an equal.
Tumblr media
His obsession with Fyodor comes from feeling misunderstood, then he meets Fyodor and Fyodor is the first person to understand him, then, Nikolai comes to a realization, that if he wants to be truly free he has to kill Fyodor. To show what humans are capable of, to try to not feel so guilty when killing, to be free and fight what society thinks and imposes. A common thing I’ve seen is that a lot of people think that he wants to be free from all emotions, but I don’t think so, I think that he only wants to be free from guilt, from morals and from society itself. About Fyodor, Fyodor understands Nikolai because he is very smart and analyses people very good, however he doesn’t see Nikolai as his equal, his only ‘equal’ is that man and Dazai, and Dazai isn’t totally his equal since Dazai could be very much said that he is an atheist and an ability user.
Tumblr media
The chapter 111.5 was truly a very good show of how Fyodor does not care for Nikolai, even BEFORE this chapter got out it was OBVIOUS that he didn’t care about Nikolai, he uses them for his own benefit, as a matter of fact he doesn’t even trust Nikolai, I don’t blame him because how are you going to trust them if they tried to kill you, however the most easy way for Fyodor to get out of Meursault would have been asking Nikolai to bring him back to Yokohama or wherever he wanted to go next instead of going to the helicopter with a vampire driving. Show that Fyodor doesn’t care about Nikolai is the disinterest he shows to Nikolai, he seems disinterested and is only interested when Dazai could die too, Nikolai seems very happy however Fyodor doesn’t even look interested, in the chapter 111.5 Nikolai seems sad at Fyodor wanting to kill him too, and I don’t blame them either since Fyodor was the first person to them to understand them, and Nikolai seemed very excited to see Fyodor again, and its just sad Fyodor’s reaction because it is totally disinterested.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fyodor doesn’t see Nikolai as an equal despite what a lot of people think, Fyodor sees God as his superior, then he is below God as he is God-sent, and the only equals he has or had was that man mentioned and Dazai. Dazai despite probably being an atheist and also being a ability user, he is on the same level of intelligence as Fyodor, they are both very similar despite that, and therefore Fyodor considers him as an equal but not God-sent. Then, there are sinners, which are people without an ability and are below Fyodor, then finally there are the worst kind of people for Fyodor, which are even more sinners that the people without the ability which are the ability users, and therefore he doesn’t consider Nikolai as his equal, remember that someone ‘worthy’ doesn’t instantly mean equal, and I don’t even think Fyodor sees Nikolai as a worthy ‘opponent’, I genuinely think that Fyodor sees Nikolas only as an opponent, though not worthy enough to be an equal.
Tumblr media
