Mental checklist of fallacies and biases and everything ever so when the brain comes in with "we've never met anyone who hasn't disappointed us" the Information Center in its soothing robot voice goes "sampling bias. correction; we haven't met anyone who hasn't disappointed us YET."
And this is how I've cheated death by my own hand and others. Logic makes me 🤤🥰
"We should kill ourselves" "what does should mean? is it possible to create a truly realistic pro and contra list of two concepts as unpredictable as life and death?" (I love lists I love liiiists)
"I WANT THE SEX" "how certain are you that this strange man is clean of STIs?" "ah yeah you're right. taking my hookup to get tested then" "social faux pas" "shut up. kidding ily"
"drugs..?" "how much time do we have? did we test it for contaminants? when next are we busy? is it necessary to take it now or is there a more appropriate situation to do that in?" "lesson learned on that last one" "did you double check the BA and interactions?" "triple checked"
"this bitch boutta get slapped into sunday" "what would the consequences of this action be? is it worth it to fight at all even with words? what do we have to lose and what to gain? is there an alternative method to stand up for yourself with less risk?" "you are never quiet" "neither are you"

Having one of those weeks of "is this the monthly Malaise or am I about to have a real mental health rut"
#I think I feel a bit bad for not having seen success for a bit on a large project or one for other people#my to-do list... I'm trying#think I just feel socially weird too. as usual I would benefit from touching grass#I know I've been on more than is good for me lately and I'm just trying to distract from not liking how creative projects are going#or feeling lonely but not very socially confident for a while#for me social media is generally an extremely poor substitute for other forms of interaction (including other online interaction) too#it's like candy. it's fun in moderation but the more of it making up your diet the sicker you feel#and socially ambiguous in a nerve wracking way with how uncertainly part private/part public it is#especially on tumblr where so much interaction is indirect and one way. it's not how I function best I fear#it can be fun! I enjoy it much of the time. but it can also be very stressful and confusing.#a solid 'touch grass' (or touch snow) time is likely approaching if I feel weird a little longer haha#but jeez! I should knock some stuff off the list first.#I'm up too late tonight. I know that. lack of satisfaction on projects I know#okayyyyy I'll maybe prep one last thing (sunk cost fallacy) and go to sleep properly like I should've ages ago. morning will be rough.#I do miss the ways people interacted on Twitter#rambling#you should know half the time I have some way too long tags it's because I meant to say one thing and then just kept going without thinking#I think I talk too much online because offline I don't talk very much. not many people to talk to.

I'm only asking because if you crticize veganism and consider it extreme then I'd assume you have thoughts about it and have an alternative in mind. Since vegans have though about it, all of it, even the appeal to tradition fallacy, the appeal to natural fallacy, everything. There are vegans who are growing food organically, teaching others how to cook and reduce waste, how to thrive on plant based diet, and are concerned with ethics all across the board no matter how you want to paint them. Unless you only know veganism based on supperficial fad diet influencers and no deeper than that. I suggest Earthlings Ed on youtube to get an idea of a vegan if your default is to see vegans only negatively. He has tackled many of the arguments you might have against veganism. I'd rather people really take time to think about these things than fight blindly just to fight.
are you aware that i can and do support everything you’re talking about re: growing organic food, reducing waste, and ethical food consumption while also thinking eating animal products is not a sin you have to somehow repent for and abstain from like a weird puritan. all of the things you listed aren’t things people frequently criticize veganism for because those are the parts lots of people already agree with?
my view of vegans is negative not because i disagree with the core principles of making food production more ethical but because many of them make no room in their ideology for any other way of thought and, as the notes on my post has made EXCEEDINGLY CLEAR, will compare the natural eating of meat (humans are omnivorous) to things like rape and murder. and i simply do not vibe with that <3

i have a lot here - feel free to only answer what you want!
💘💫💞💝💥🎙️💌
💘Is there any posted fic you want to rework/re-edit/re-write?
If I had the time and patience and inclination, I'd rework Eucatastrophe from the ground up. There's a lot of it that, in retrospect, I wish I could have done better. Mainly stuff to do with the mirror-people, and the pacing at the beginning.
💫what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?
I love analysis and speculation the most, tbh. When people are throwing around theories and/or connecting thematic bits to other bits, I'm having the best time.
💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language
Characters, probably - a good plot can often be ruined by bad characterisation, worldbuilding is okay but a million times better with characters to drive it. I can forgive bad grammar and spelling if the characterization makes me happy enough, figurative language isn't strictly necessary, but god i love characterization.
💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
I expected like, two people max to be interested in Syzygy. Because it's a niche fic for a niche pairing with an extremely niche concept and a very high wordcount. Needless to say, the amount of people who've been enthusiastic about it - in the comments, tags, and/or my inbox - has just been delightful. Thank you all.
💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.
least kudos'd fic - the lavender for luck remix I did from Janus's POV! I really enjoyed taking the flip side of the limited perspective of that fic, and I think I nailed what I set out to do there - make a fic that would be satisfying to someone who read the original and wondered 'hey, what about Dee?'
🎙️which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?
The answer to that one is almost always 'the one I'm writing right now'. (Seriously. Mystery Longfic podfic would make me Yell.)
But actually, for real? I think Cassandra Fallacy would make a great podfic with a narrator who's willing to do a Janus impression and keep it up, relentlessly and to the point of being infuriating, for several hours.
💌share something with us about an up-and-coming work (WIP) that has you excited!
uh, sword fights. through writing this i have discovered the EXTREME joy of writing sword fights (and gun fights) (janus brought a sword to a gunfight) (he's fine just full of hubris and one (1) hole in his skin) i don't know if you guys will enjoy reading them as much as i've enjoyed writing them, because it's notoriously difficult to write enjoyable fight scenes of any type, but........ i hope i'll get it right. because, as mentioned above, extreme joy.

02.01.2023 || I can't stomach the idea of listening to another Cultural Anthropology lecture recording so I just WON'T. I'm either too stupid to get it or this is just mind-numbingly boring. I chose this course because it was supposed to be a written exam and it DOESN'T anymore so why I am even bothering with it.
I've decided to still go see the oral exams. If it's doable, I might attempt it. Otherwise, I'll just start attending Portuguese lectures again next semester.
Will my semester be INSANELY BUSY if I have to attend 6 courses + work kind of full-time? YES, BUT I DON'T CARE. I JUST WON'T SLEEP. WHATEVER.
Things to do today:
Listen to as many Glottodidattica lectures as I can
Have lunch.
Write down the list of Chinese vocabulary I need to memorize for the exam
Knit cardigan I guess
BONUS TASKS: write email to E

Experiencing something like the sunk cost fallacy i.e; this may be useful or important later so regardless of how burdensome or hurtful it is I must not get rid of it.
What if (person) becomes nice later and will be in some way helpful. What if (thing) will be useful for something later regardless of whether I need it right now. What if learning about (depressive episode waiting to happen) will be useful in something important? What if (relationship) will increase in mutual benefit and this is one thing I'm gonna have to stick out?
The one upside to the scrappy mindset, is, well, it does what it's meant to do sometimes. Lots of junk material, parts, old pieces of metal, screws, fabrics, buttons, sequins, stones, etc etc. do end up coming in handy for some project or invention. Lots of people who make problems for me we end up working stuff out and help each other grow. Lots of stuff that may hurt to know is still undeniably helpful to be aware of when interacting with the world. But other times the scrappy mindset does Not work out and I end up having wasted time, energy, and investment, on a useless trainwreck.
Being too critical of things makes you close yourself off to opportunity. Being too open makes you liable to overextending yourself and your resources (putting your eggs into too many baskets). How to be the perfect judge to create the perfect balance.
Maybe I need to try harder to shop around. Put myself out there and really get my finger in every cake so I know which is creamiest. Or whatever. But moderation is difficult. There are always too many factors at play.

Okay, so apparently links count as characters, and you can only have so many characters per block of text. That is why the end of the list looks like that.
This is the list of all AUs entered, with links. Originally I was going to do links separate, but then I realized it would be easier to do it this way.

Nigel: The Muppets' Most Interesting Uninteresting Character
(This was supposed to be a fun little post about an obscure Muppet character but now I fell down a hole doing too much research and sunk cost fallacy won't let me live it down unless I include all of the useless information I've learned so enjoy knowing more about this character than you ever have or ever will want to know)
Tumblr media
Nigel was created to be the host of the Muppet Show's Sex and Violence pilot instead of Kermit (who only appears in the pilot for like 30 seconds)
He was originally puppeteered by Jim Henson himself, giving him a vaguely Kermit-esq voice initially
Nigel Voice Count: 1
Nigel is a yellow... something. You’d assume he’s just a stylized human Muppet but in S4E18 Sam refers to him as a “thing”
He actually looks near-identical to a Fraggle minus the tail. I don’t know what to do with this information
Nigel was diagnosed with terminal Boring Personality disease due to the following attributes:
He’s very meek. Unlike Kermit, who will freak out and tell people they suck to their faces, Nigel raises his voice one (1) time and mostly relies on Sam the Eagle and Crazy Harry to deal with the assorted chaos
His face is flexible like Kermit’s, but he has permanently partially-lidded eyes that leave him looking exhausted in every scene he’s in
He’s generally unenthusiastic and seems like he wants to go home constantly
Jim Henson: The Works describes him as "lacking in spunk and charisma," which is hilariously cruel yet 100% accurate
What’s surprising at this point is that instead of scrapping him, he instead took on the role of orchestra conductor on the show proper, where he proceeds to do almost nothing for five seasons
The Muppets Character Encyclopedia actually provides a canon reason for this: Nigel lost the job of host due to his “shy manner”, and Kermit, feeling bad for replacing him, gave him his new job
He can technically be seen in basically every episode during the theme song, but aside from that, he often pops up in the chorus during songs
Which is funny when you consider he should be in the pit Doing His Job during those sequences
A quick list of his more important (if you can even call them that) appearances:
S1E2: He has Zoot play a song called “Sax and Violence” b/c pilot references
It’s actually implied the Mayhem falls under his jurisdiction as he threatens to fire Zoot, but this never comes up again
S1E24: Playing the part of a library patron noisily chewing gum (despite not having teeth. idk you figure it out). This one’s only notable because he’s wearing the same outfit from the pilot
S3E16: Nigel’s eyelids are not connected to the rest of his body and he’s facing backwards through the entire backstage segment so you’re uncomfortably aware of this
S1E23 has Floyd complaining that the theme song is cringe(TM), at which point it’s casually revealed that Nigel wrote it?? how is this character so important and unimportant at the exact same time
If you’ve seen this episode and aren’t deaf you might have noticed he has a completely different voice here. This is because John Lovelady has taken over as his puppeteer, presumably because Jim was busy Running The Entire Show
Nigel Voice Count: 2
Tumblr media
Nigel has a talent for whistling, which is shown off in S2E18 during a performance with Floyd (this is the only time he comes on stage to perform that isn’t with a crowd)
He shows this off again in S4E18 to participate in the age-old sport of Annoying Sam the Eagle backstage
As of the 2011 movie Walter takes over as the show’s resident whistler because Nigel isn’t allowed to have character traits
He briefly shows up during the credits of The Muppet Movie (now puppeteered by Dave Goelz). Because of this, in the UK version of the end credits, he has another completely different voice
Nigel Voice Count: 3
After a brief background appearance in The Jim Henson Hour (S1E12), Nigel proceeded to completely disappear for 20 years
I’m guessing the reason was that his puppet was becoming unusable. The foam used for the muppets disintegrates over time, and his puppet was ~15 years old at this point
Things were particularly bleak for him in the 90s because Muppets Tonight came out with a new unrelated TV director character named... Nigel. Because Jim had passed away at this point and I think everyone working on the show literally Forgot they already had a character named that
Not that it would be that big of a problem, seeing as the chances of yellow Nigel returning were bleak. who was gonna spend time and money rebuilding an incredibly minor background character like him
Tumblr media
TRICK QUESTION because he was rebuilt for The Muppets (2011), which is pretty amazing when you consider that he does Nothing during this movie
The new puppet looks pretty similar to the old one. I think the face is a bit rounder/more structured but I could also be losing my mind
(Side note: shoutout to whoever decided to give him a scarf in this scene. that’s such an unnecessary detail)
What’s great is that now that the puppet’s been rebuilt he’s shown up in a lot of stuff because they have no reason not to include him. Some of the more notable examples include:
The music video for OK Go’s cover of the theme song (which I certainly hope he would show up in I mean. it’s his song)
In the live shows (The Muppets Take the Bowl and The Muppets Take the O2) there’s a parade of overlooked characters, which includes Nigel. I just find it funny that:
A) The writers fully acknowledge that he’s King of the Background Characters
B) The in-universe implication that Kermit was like “no one knows who you are, wanna be in a parade celebrating that fact” and Nigel was like “okay”
His most recent appearance was in Muppets Haunted Mansion, where he’s dead (don’t worry about it). More importantly, he gets an entire shot to himself conducting some skulls, which I think is the first time the camera’s been focused solely on him in literally 40 years. Good job, buddy!
Here’s some other misc appearances that I couldn’t fit elsewhere:
Tumblr media
He appears alongside Jim and a few other Muppets in a 1977 commercial for American Express (once again wearing his pilot outfit), which is particularly strange considering he’s the only character there that used to be puppeteered by Jim
In 2010 he got a somewhat important role in the first issue of Muppet Sherlock Holmes, playing the part of a butler suspected of poisoning the head of the house
He gets one whole page in The Muppets Character Encyclopedia from 2014 (right next to other Nigel). In addition to the aforementioned info bridging the gap between the pilot and the show proper, it also states that he’s susceptible to hypnosis and he trained at the Tommy Newsom Academy for Music and Charisma
Tumblr media
In terms of future projects: there is both a Jim Henson biopic and documentary coming in the future (side note: why???), so it’s possible he might be discussed briefly in one of those
I have no thesis statement or reason for writing this, but I guess I’ll close out by saying that I find it fascinating that a failed main character from a pilot episode is still appearing in recent Muppet productions but solely as a background character. I hope that in 2073 I can put on some Muppet media and Nigel will still be there still doing absolutely nothing
thanks for coming to my TED talk
