Books 2022

I find it highly amusing that the longest book I Read in 2022 was Meatbun Doesn’t Eat Meat’s new light novel Medical Record Book / Bing An Ben. I read that book a chapter every day with a machine translation (+ plus all the cars = sex scenes on a Discord server) until it was finished. It was fun and weird to follow an ongoing novel every day for such a long time.

Other notables:

Lisa Edmonds Alice Worth world had a few new entries. IIRC, she’s self-published, but I highly rec her Alice Worth urban fantasy series. Alice is a magic worker with a very tortured (literally) past, who starts to form new connections in the first book and ends up with an extended family who are all threatened by her past in the later books. She also started a new series which is okay sofar. I’ll wait and see how it develops.

Copper Coins by Musuli

Very nice danmei. Loved the contrast between a vain and cranky dragon and the Buddhist monk presenting main. Thanks to The Blood of Youth I’ve been thinking Liu Xueyi would be excellent as Xuan Min, but who to play as Xue Xian?

Network Effect by Martha Wells

Murderbot is just ❤️. And I’ve always loved everything by this author since her first book, The Element of Fire, which I bought back in the 90s just because it sounded interesting. I’ve bought about every one of her books since then.

Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews

Long-awaited continuation to their Hidden Legacy series. It ended Catalina’s story, so now we still have Arabella and her Beast to deal with. Urban fantasy in a unique world with various hereditary magical talents where a family of hidden talents tries to hide at first, but after being forced to enter the magical world, struggles to set their place in the power structure. (Lol, this is like a deliberately vague summary of all the books.)

Mo Du / Silent Reading by Priest

The best danmei I’ve read in a while. A crime story that just kept building upon a thing layer after gruesome layer. All episodes were crimes in their own, but kept building info on the big background plot. The romance between the mains starts out with cautious attraction as adults after they’ve known each other since the other one was a teen at a crime scene.

Creechur: i think i wanna say that he wore one of those animal onsies. probably some sort of dog :) (Tristan made the costume for him — it’s hard to find something Creechur-size!)

Dorian: vampire. but like, pop-culture’s-image-of-vampires vibes. also he has a rule that the top few buttons of his shirt stay undone at all times

Nemo: insists he won’t dress up in any “ridiculous costumes”… still ends up in a navy captain’s uniform

Griffin: stole a bedsheet from Jekyll and turned it into a ghost costume. absolute minimal effort but he’s getting a kick out of the fact that no one outside of the main crew know how he’s hiding his legs >:)

Faustus: barely has a physical form tbh, and i think he’s a bit too busy to put any effort for a Halloween costume…

I don't watch a lot of shows, mostly I read, listen to music and the news, and read som more... it's kind of in my "name" 😅

When I watch anything , it is mostly YouTube, currently my favorites are Rachel Maksy, Morgan Donner and listening to old Citation Needed episodes by The Technical Difficulties (Tom Scott and 3 friends)

Current obsession:

Horizon zero dawn❤️ and Horizon forbidden west ❤️(I might have a problem....)

- I got the Horizon Zero Dawn coloring book and the Horizon Forbidden West art book 2 weeks ago (already had HZD artbook and the comics, whant more!) Oh, I also own a lot of @godliath digital Ereloy stuff

- I've started making 3 horizon (sort of) original cosplays/costumes (Banuk villager, Oseram brewer and Nora hunter) but I don't plan on them being finished until september 2024. I just need my body to work and get some energy again.. (breathing without pain would be nice, freaking asthma)

- Replaying HZD with Frozen Wild, I "gotta catch them all" to every thing including all the datapoints (so close now!) I started doing the same with HFW before Burning Shores, but somehow I lost a powercell in the base and a crate in a ruin so I need to start over😓

- Re-reading every thing Ereloy (my favorit ship with my favorit boy Erend 🥰) on AO3 + a few more in the Horizon 'vers

- Just startede with a few drawings to test ideas for a second Ereloy painting (still need get back that energy, long covid sucks big time🤬)

Currently reading:

I read a lot, like when my body hurts too much, when my brain needs a break, when I'm bored, sometimes when I work and Ialso read for fun.. On average 3 hours (or more) a day, often 300+ pages in a day and multiple books at the same time, and before I found AO3 that meant 500 or more books in a year.

There were of course, riots and strikes: electricians, civil servants, site workers, postmen, bar waiters, taxi drivers. Men wanted to build and shape their destiny. They wanted a better share of the riches of the world.

There was the Montmartre of the painters and the Bateau-Lavoir; the first aerial meetings; the Paris flooding; the comet of Halley passing by; the appearance of the first tangos; the first music halls; the inauguration of the Vél'd'Hiv and the Gaumont Palace; the theft of the Mona Lisa; the end of the Bande à Bonnot; the publication of La Guerre des Boutons; the meeting between Yvonne de Quiévrecourt and Alain-Fournier under the trees of the Cours La Reine, which so narrowly missed the Goncourt prize; the first phone cabins; the electrification of the railway; the first Michelin maps; the fashion of caps et boaters; the invention of esperanto.

It was peace. The promise of a new dawn, the carefree spirit of summer, the peace of fields spattered with cornflowers and poppies which were waiting the sickle of the harvester or the knife of the thrasher.

They were seventeen, twenty-five, or thirty. Many wore their hair short, and moustaches. Many had the rough neck and hands of the worker, a laborer's worn fingers, a turner's or mechanic's broken nails. There were grooms, land surveyors, bakers, butlers, office boys, clerk notaries, butchers, schoolteachers, peddlers, copywriters, cow keepers, porters, shepherds, priests, grinders, cooks, toolmakers, clerks, chauffeurs, footmen, tinsmiths, deliverers, boilermakers, newsboys, barbers, railway workers, waiters, postmen, intellectuals, factory workers, bourgeois, aristocrats and saddlers.

Suddenly there were civilians, career soldiers, conscripts, reservists, artillery men, navy men, infantry men, zouaves, aviators, pioneers, stretcher-bearers, liaison officers, telegraphers, non-commissioned officers, submariners, cooks, adjudtants, generals, lieutenants, chaplains, canteen-workers, cavalry men, bleus, rappelés, permissionnaires, etc… Suddenly, were the Poilus.

Their handwriting was round or sharp; it had the delicacy of the quill or the thick stroke of the ink pen. Their names were Gaston, Jean, Auguste, Marcel, Louis, Alexandre, Edmond, Martin, Antoine, Etienne, Maurice, Albert, Henri, Roger, René… Their wives or their mothers were named Félicie, Léontine, Hortense, Louise, Honorine, Clémence, Marguerite, Berthe, Germaine, Yvonne, Marthe…

All of them travellers without baggage who had to leave their families, their fiancees, their wives, their children. Leave there their office, their lathe, their kneader, their workshop or their stable. Don the poorly cut uniform, the garance trousers, the bumpy képi. Take on the too heavy barda and put on the cleated shoes.

They knew very soon that this war was senseless. From false hopes to false hopes, from last battles to last battles, they ended up unable to project the end of the war whose actors they were, and whose usefulness wasn't so obvious anymore to them.

Out of eight million mobilised between 1914 and 1918, over two million young men never saw again the belltower of their village. Over eight thousand people answered the call of Radio France: eight thousand letters, meaning that many families searching, into a coffer in the attic, between the yellowed pages of family photo albums, for the memory of their fathers', grandfathers', ancestors' lives.

These words written in the mud aren't eighty, or eighty-five years old; they are one day old. They have the whole strength of a life all the more intense since it was so close to the abyss, since it was looking at death every second.

We do not claim to do a historian's work by gathering in a few weeks so many powerful and intense documents: our purpose is before all humanist and literary. We simply meant to let these cries of the soul, entrusted to quill and crayon, be heard, like so many bottles thrown to the sea, which should stimulate for future generations the duty of memory, the duty of vigilance, the duty of humanity.

CHARLES ROBERT MONCRIEF, JR., Ph.D

September 18, 1935 – January 16, 2022

Charles Robert Moncrief, Jr., age 86, of Bullhead City, Arizona and former long-time resident of Ventura County, California, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 16, 2022.

Charles was born in Thomasville, Georgia to Charles Robert, Sr. and Essie White Moncrief. He was the second oldest of five children. After high school, Charles served in the United States Air Force. He was a graduate of Bob Jones University and the University of Southern California. His early work experience included positions with the United States Post Office and being a junior high school teacher and football coach. After moving to California, Charles enjoyed a long career in civil service working at several Naval activities overseas, NAWC-WD China Lake, and finally at NAWC-WD Point Mugu, where he retired in 1991 with over 35 years of service.

He was a mentor, a leader, and a faithful servant in his church. He spent his retired years keeping-up on his devotions, caregiving, and serving as a deacon and leader of various church ministries where he was known for telling great stories and being a good listener.

Charles was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed gathering with family and friends alongside his devoted wife who he often referred to as his "beautiful bride" and the love of his life. He also liked decorating for Christmas and was pleasantly surprised to win a neighborhood house decorating contest. He loved listening to his wind-chimes, bird watching, reading, writing, teaching, speaking, and maintaining his daily planners. He also enjoyed the occasional trip to Sonic with his faithful fur-babies, Chippy and Chanel. He will be fondly remembered as a kind person, a great hugger who always smelled so-good, and an avid prayer warrior!

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Joyce Moncrief; and brother James Landis Moncrief.   He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children, Joni (Stuart) Karpinski  of Santa Rosa, California, Cindy (Gary) Wright of Edmond, Oklahoma, Charles Greg (Sherri) Moncrief of Edmond, Oklahoma, Lisa Michelle (Reyna) Gilroy of Port Hueneme, California, Nicolette Catice Moncrief of Arroyo Grande, California, and Charles Robert (Michele) Moncrief III of Arroyo Grande, California; his grandchildren, Eric (Ulrika), Darren, Chelsea, Melody, Lindsay, Samuel, Shane, and Elias; his great-grandchildren, Elin and William; his sister, Brenda Joy (Charles) Sanders ; and brother, Ronnie (Elizabeth) Moncrief of Florida.   A memorial service will be held at 12:30 pm on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Desert Shores Community Baptist Church, 2625 Landon Dr., Bullhead City, AZ 86429.   Flowers, sentiments, or contributions may be made to Desert Shores Community Baptist Church or Compassus Hospice Group, 2755 Silver Creek Rd., Ste 211, Bullhead City, AZ 86442

Jekyll is so tired of this. “Hyde why would you eat that now I have to suffer for your stupid choices AGAIN” Jekyll’s mug has some saying like “I run on coffee and sarcasm” or some nerdy science fact on it

Lisa is all too familiar with Hyde’s antics. she humors him exactly long enough for him to look away and pours it down the nearest drain (or, in this case, books it to Henry’s lab to safely dispose of this biohazard). her mug is turquoise (just like the bathroom mat <3) with some cute swirly pattern on it

Tristan takes a sip and immediately has many regrets. he uses any mug he can find

Dantes won’t even take the cup, and he now is extra wary of all food in this time cause now he thinks that Hyde’s recipe is semi normal for the era. He exclusively uses whatever mug coordinates with his outfit that day

and everyone else is still a secret over here :)
