Linzin
Sober proposal
MAKE IT REALLY REALLY SWEET AND ADORABLE, SO MUCH LIN ALMOST WANTS TO RUN AWAY IN SHAME.
OKAY I WILL TRY MY BEST. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
And here's Part 5 and on AO3!
Kya ran like she had never run before. She finally figured it out. It wasn't her fault. It was Tenzin's. It was partly her fault- but not nearly as much as it was Tenzin's.
If only the Republic City Police Department wasn't so far away from Air Temple Island.
For someone as free-flowing as Kya, this would have to be the gravest situation she must have found herself in. She hurried and scurried across the bay and to the station. She was a woman on a mission.
All of the officers made note of the racing waterbender, but seeing as she was the daughter of the Avatar, and sister of the Captain's boyfriend, most people knew better than to pay much heed to her strange bustle. Kya was grateful to the ignorance- for one, she had no time to explain, and secondly- she'd be in danger if she was forced to explain.
As soon as Lin's office came into view, Kya didn't even think to knock. This was no time for time for a formality of that sort. Even if she had Lin's wrath to face at first, she would receive forgiveness as soon as she relayed her reasoning behind the intrusion.
She slammed the door open, deciding to lose no time to panting.
"LIN! I misdiagnosed you! It isn't a stomach bug. YOU'RE PREGNANT!"
However, the back of the chair was facing the desk.
Kya finally granted herself a moment to catch her breath. The news was out in the room and the ball was now in her court. Hopefully, Lin hadn't already eaten anything she shouldn't have, but again, knowing Lin, had she even eaten yet?
The chair slowly turned around to face the intruder.
But while she was expecting a face of shock from behind the desk, Kya landed up being the one whose jaw dropped to the floor.
"What did you say?" Came the whisper.
Kya's eyes blew open, "Tenzin!?"
Oh dear, what had she done? She should've thought this through- why would Lin's chair be facing away from the desk? Stupid, stupid, stupid-
"What are you doing here?" She shouted.
"Me?" Tenzin shook his head, "It's my girlfriend's office! What are you doing here?"
"Obviously delivering some very important news about your girlfriend!" She folded her arms in front of her chest.
Tenzin stood up slowly, trying to alleviate the shock of this moment so that he could process the shock from what he had just heard. He walked up closer to Kya, shaking slightly in half disbelief and in half fear of having heard it wrong.
She took his obtuse demeanor in, realizing what this means for him. She gave him a relaxed smile, hoping he'd let it comfort him and said, "She's pregnant, Tenzin."
Bingo. He smiled.
"And it might be yours."
Aaaaand there's that frown. Now he was back to normal.
"What are you doing here though?" She finally asked.
"I was going to propose," He seemed to not believe his own words, "And- I guess- Yeah! This.. Is... Happening! She's pregnant!" He suddenly jerked up, "I'm going to propose. You need to leave!"
As soon as he started directing Kya back towards the door, she shoved him off.
"First of all, are you really proposing in her office?" She slapped the back of his head gently. Gentle enough to force a grunt out of him though.
"No, I'm taking her out to lunch. I have a whole day planned for us, so you need to leave! You can tell her after-"
"No! I need to tell her first, Tenzin! She has been sick for a whole week and I don't want her doing anything she should really be avoiding in her condition!"
"Oh- I'll take good care of her," He started leading her back to the door.
This time she elbowed his ribs, heavy with the sarcasm, "Of course, since you're the one who irresponsibly got her pregnant in the first place!" She pulled him away from the door with her and softened her voice, "You know Lin- you know she likes do things her way and if you try controlling anything, she's not going to like it and she'll be suspicious. And then you can kiss your proposal goodbye!"
"Kya please!" He held her hands up in front of him, almost begging, "It's been a year. Exactly a year today actually."
Something about his sobriety made her snort. She burst out laughing.
Tenzin turned his usual grumpy red.
"This is not funny!"
Kya managed to get her words out despite hysterics radiating through her body. Spirits, he'd turn redder if she laughed any more, "How do you forget whether or not you proposed, Tenzin?" She bent down in half trying to curb her laughter, "I mean, fine, sure, Lin might've been asleep. What were you doing? Dreaming? Teleporting to the spirit world-"
"Kya!" He grumbled, "Please. I was drunk and so was she and now it's high time. I need to propose. I even have the betrothal necklace with me. Just-" He sighed, "Please wait it out? Just let me ask her and then you can tell her."
Kya wiped a tear now, finally relaxed, "Tenzin, as a healer, I need to let her know of her condition first thing."
Tenzin plopped himself onto the couch clumsily and Kya followed after him, looking poised beside him.
"I'll give you fifty yuans to push your news until after my proposal."
Something inside Tenzin had clicked: he had lightened up. He was going to be a father. Father to Lin's child. They were going to be a family. This child would be the foundation of the life he craved so badly with her for years. It was all finally happening.
"Make it two hundred, and you have a deal." She chirped back.
"Fine." Tenzin snorted, pulling out the monetary notes from his pocket to hand it to her.
"Although..." Kya pondered, snatching the money, "Why do you want to go first so badly? Even after knowing what you know now."
"I-" Tenzin cringed at his thoughts, "I don't want her to think that the proposal has anything to do with me getting her pregnant. And I'm afraid she'll just say yes if she knows I knocked her up."
Kya guffawed, "Exactly! She'll definitely say yes! Don't you want her to say yes, you lychee nut?"
But before Tenzin could respond, the door to the office swung open harshly. Whoever was opening the door seemed reckless about their boisterous action. Someone who certainly knew where they were. Someone entering with a purpose.
"AH! What are you two doing here?" Asked the surprised voice.
Or someone who just didn't care where or what they were walking in to.
"Bumi?!" The two of them exclaimed, "What are you doing here?"
"I just got arrested." He shrugged.
"First thing in the morning?" Kya asked with shock.
Tenzin saw her shock and topped it, "What even for?"
"Public micturition and intoxication." He sounded through a casual yawn.
"Wha-" Came the unanimous confusion, "Why were you- You're not even that intoxicated!"
"No, I'm not." Bumi shrugged happily, "I took a couple of swigs once they found me."
"Why would you-"
"Would you rather I got arrested for peeing in public while sober?" He countered.
"Well, fair, I guess." Kya stood up along with Tenzin, uncertainty avid in her voice.
"And what are the two of YOU doing here?" He continued.
She glanced over at her little brother and then at her older, who was waiting for an answer. She sighed, but then quickly perked up and smiled, "Tenzin is going to propose to Lin and I'm here to let her know that she's pregnant."
"LIN IS PREGNANT!" Bumi screamed.
"SHHHH!" The two of them hushed him.
"Lin is pregnant!" He cheered in a whisper, "I'm going to be an uncle! To a sweet, little baby who might be mean, but also knows nothing-" His face dropped, "That's too much- I can't handle that kinda-"
"Bumi, can you relax? It's not your child!" Kya scolded.
The non-bender shook his head. Tenzin wasn't freaking out, so neither did he have to. He immediately composed himself and got into strategy mode, "Okay, so you two go first so that she's in a good mood and then we can tell her I got arrested.. or actually," He continued as the two of them sighed in defeat, "Knowing Lin, I doubt she'll like the idea of being pregnant or married to an airhead. Why don't I go first so isn't in a bad mood-"
"No, no, no!" Kya interrupted, "I need to-"
"Both of you! Let's follow the natural order of things and let me go first. Proposal, pregnancy and then perjury!"
However, Bumi had yet another strategy in place, "What if we all delivered a different thing?"
The two of them looked at him with minor interest. So he started, "Tenzin can tell Lin she's pregnant, Kya can go to jail- you know, since you've done that a lot, and I can propose to Lin," He had a devilish smile on his face now, "Since Tenzin already tried once and failed."
"You're not proposing to my girlfriend!" Tomato Tenzin was making a reappearance.
"And I'm not going to jail for you!" Kya scoffed, "I go to protests and then get arrested and they're always for a good cause!"
"Yeah? Do you even remember what the last protest you got arrested for was about?" He raised an eyebrow.
"No, but-"
"Focus!" Tenzin shouted, "Lin is going to be here in seconds. I need you both to leave so that I can sweep her off her feet with my proposal. And then, we can give her the baby news and then we can deal with Bumi's adult-baby problems!"
Unfortunately though, within just a mere more seconds of chaos in deciding which of the three siblings got to go first, drawing no actual consensus, the office door flung open once more.
This time it was Captain Lin Beifong and she was flabbergasted to find all three of them there.
"What's going on here?" She placed one hand on either side of her hips and glared down her nose at the great Avatar's progeny in front of her.
Despite having zero common grounds established throughout this encounter, two of the three of them experienced some kind of unification and together spoke up, throwing the third under the satobus, "Bumi got arrested."
"HEY!"
As it turned out, Bumi getting arrested for the pettiest of things was just the least of Lin's concerns that day. There had already been one too many arrests, leading to an overcrowded jail, which meant that Bumi was freed before he was even put behind bars. It didn't help that Tenzin had been overly needy that day, buzzing around and following her everywhere she went. For some reason, he had decided that leaving Lin alone for even a second was a terrible, terrible idea- so the Captain had absolutely no privacy- despite her many pleas for the same.
Eventually, Tenzin had to cross off one thing after another on his proposal plan. No picnic in the park, no lunch at Kuong's, no tea and snacks from their favorite hawker, and finally, since most restaurants had closed by night, he couldn't take her out to a romantic dinner either. It was true, Lin worked too hard, too tirelessly despite what her body had been trying to tell her for the past week. However, with Tenzin knowing what was going, rather growing inside of her, he was able to manipulate her into somewhat taking care of herself.
Kya had no choice but to entrust Tenzin with making sure Lin was okay. It couldn't be too horrible to let her think she had a stomach bug for one more day until Tenzin got to propose. But the next day had to be when Lin found out what was going on in her own body.
Tenzin did a haphazard job hiding the dejection from his failed plans from Lin. She was aware that there was something going on with him, but between her work and her frequent trips to the restroom to evict everything up and out her mouth, she found it taxing to bring it up. She just wanted to go back to the Island with him and rest it out for the night. She was inexplicably exhausted, and while Tenzin's hovering may have been annoying at first, she was grateful for his company and the comfort she so desired on such an awful day.
At the end of it though, when it was finally time to call it quits, Lin held his hand as the two of them silently made their way to the roof of the station. It was cool and breezy, but not bitingly so. Oogie was lying there in between sleep and yawns when Tenzin pet his nose to awaken him.
"Come on, big guy." He said softly, "We got to get home now."
Oogie blinked the slumber away from his eyes following another massive yawn, before he shook his head and got on his feet.
Tenzin had his arm around Lin's back, tangling his fingers through hers at her other side. While he was grinning away, amused by his sleepy best friend, Lin wore a tiny smile on her face, the first of the day, as she absolutely adored the animal.
Oogie crawled over in front of Lin, begging for a pet on his nose from her too. But just as Lin extended her arm out, Oogie bumped his nose into her belly, pushing her back a touch.
"Whoa there, big guy." Tenzin stepped forward, "Careful. We have an extremely tired girlfriend with us."
Lin only curled into Tenzin's arm, resting her head under his chin as together, they stroked Oogie's nose gently. However, Oogie was hell bent on touching Lin's belly with his nose again. Of course, Tenzin knew what the sweet sky bison was sensing, but he couldn't let the furry guy be the one to let her know.
"Come on, Oogie." Lin smiled lazily, "It's just a stomach bug. I'll be fine in no time."
Tenzin placed a protective hand on her belly and returned her smile, "Yeah. It'll be out soon, Oogie."
Lin turned to Tenzin in amusement, but let out a giggle instead of saying anything. She stroked Oogie with one hand, combing through his coarse fur as a bunch of it entangled itself in her fingers.
"Someone's shedding more than I am, it seems." She commented with a smirk.
"Maybe Oogie's more stressed out than you." Tenzin smirked, kissing her temple quickly.
Oogie shook his body, let loose a pound or so of his fur into the wind. Tenzin was right, in part, Oogie was stressed; his young, tiny humans were together going to be having a tinier one of their own.
The two of them climbed on top of Oogie's saddle and just as they cozied up in a corner, the bison took flight, scattering some more of his fluff into the wind behind them. Lin curled up into Tenzin's embrace as she always did when she was flying, and Tenzin held on to her tightly, one hand unconsciously on her belly.
"This bug is the worst," She sighed, "I can't believe I'm motion sick too."
"Oh are you going to-"
"No, I'm just dizzy." She exhaled into his neck, "I'll be fine. Remind me to ask Kya for some medication for this tomorrow. I can't keep going like this."
"Mmhmm." He didn't know what to say.
After a few silent moments in each others' embrace, something stirred inside Tenzin. Even though all his plans for the day had failed, having the love of his life in his arms at the end of it didn't quite feel like as much of a loss. She was warm and cozy in his ensconce, eyes closed and relaxed; feeling safe far from the ground.
"Lin?" He nudged her by touching his nose to her head.
"I'm awake," She smiled, "Just resting my eyes."
"I love you so much, you know?"
"That would explain why you were following me around like a lost polar bear puppy all day." She smirked without opening her eyes, "It would be plain creepy if you weren't in love with me."
Tenzin chuckled and pulled her closer into himself, "You remember this time last year?"
"Mmm," She hummed, "Weren't we on vacation?"
"Yes." He kissed her hair, "We got really wasted."
"Yeah, I don't remember a thing from that night other than riding on Xinyi. Her flight is just as smooth as Oogie's."
Oogie bellowed happily at the sound of his name, making the two of them laugh.
Tenzin clutched on the betrothal necklace that was placed safely in one of the pocketed folds of his robes and made up his mind. He didn't need a perfect moment. Every moment..
"... I spend with you is a perfect moment." He began.
Lin moved away from him, but when he looked at her face, her eyes were blown wide in fear. She looked like she was about to say something- something urgent.
"Tenzin, I'm going to-"
And there it was. Lin projectile vomited all over him and his perfect moment. Luckily, Tenzin didn't take this in response to what he had to say.
"I'm so sorry!" She cried, "I don't know- I'm so- I hate-"
Tenzin quickly hushed her, "Hey, hey, it's okay. You're sick and you're tired, it happens- you're-"
"No!" She whined, "I don't even know-"
"Shhh." Tenzin whispered, reaching his arms out to her carefully, "We're almost home and-"
Lin shoved a bunch of Oogie's fur onto Tenzin's body to wipe whatever she could in some kind of frantic haste. He helped her get most of it off of them- thankfully, there wasn't much to begin with anyway- though, it was enough for Lin to feel embarrassed.
However, it didn't ruin any of the magic from Tenzin's moment, at least not for him. The necklace was still inside his pocket, and his feelings for Lin had only grown throughout the day.
Just as they were done wiping off his robes, Oogie carefully descended onto the grass outside his stable. Tenzin held Lin close to him and hopped off, using his airbending to break their landing. The sky bison roared and yawned once more before heading inside.
"I'll just go tuck him in. You wanna come with?"
Lin nodded and followed behind into the stable. Oogie went to his usual spot and immersed himself under the mixture of his shedded fur and hay. She went up to the front of the animal and rested her nose against him, giving him gentle kisses while Tenzin grabbed the pale of water from the hose on the side. The two of them paid no mind to the airbender, who bent the air to create a fluid with the water and clean his robes up. He certainly couldn't pull out the necklace while his folds may have Beifong barf running through them.
Lin extended her arm to the side when she noticed Tenzin walking up them, all cleaned up. He fell into Lin's embrace and onto Oogie's face trying to catch some of the kisses his girlfriend was laying on the fluff. Lin giggled and alternated between kissing Tenzin and Oogie's face until she fell into his embrace. The sky bison yawned again, dropping them both onto the hay-fur mix under him; creating a soft landing for the lovers.
"Sorry I threw up all over you." She grinned.
"I wouldn't have anyone else throw up on me, love." He smiled back, "I mean it."
Lin laughed. She had the most infectious laugh he had ever heard.
"Besides that though, I'd never want anyone else in my arms this way, covered in fur, sweat, water, puke and hay. I'd never want anyone to hold meaning to my life the way you do, come what may."
"Tenzin-" Her face grew serious like his tone.
"I mean it. I'd never be able to love anyone nearly as much as I love you."
He cupped her cheek with one hand to turn her face towards his. He looked deep into her eyes. This was it. This was the moment.
"And I you, Tenzin, I love you." She beamed.
"So, Lin Beifong," He began, "Will you do the honor of making me the happiest by letting me be the only man you'll ever throw up on?"
Lin scoffed, but then she snickered. So Tenzin continued, bringing his other hand into his pocket, "Will you-"
Lin's jaw would've dropped had she not immediately fallen into hysterics. You see, with the amount of hay and fur they had been lying in ever since they left the city, Tenzin's pocket had saved some of its own. So when he pulled out what he thought was the betrothal necklace he had spent months working on, he also brought out with him a comically large amount of Oogie's fur.
She laughed again; in what was the most infectious laugh to his ears. Giving in to her completely, Tenzin burst out laughing too. The two of them spent the next few minutes digging out the necklace from amidst the fur. It sure was the best unwrapping Lin could've asked for.
When the ochre ornament adorned in deep blue sapphire and rich green opal stones was finally visible, Lin pulled her hands away.
This was the moment Tenzin had been waiting for. It was their moment.
"Will you marry me?" He whispered delicately.
Lin's eyes had turned glassy just looking at the way Tenzin held up the necklace. He had certainly put a lot of work into it. The gems meticulously arranged to form the air nation symbols within the earth kingdom sigil in alternating colors. It wasn't just a betrothal necklace- it was a jewel by itself; a jewel of Tenzin's creation.
Lin ran her hand over the pendant softly and moved her gaze onto Tenzin's expectant eyes.
"Obviously," She cried, "Yes, Tenzin, yes. I will marry you."
Another yawn sounded out of Oogie as the couple giggled, giddy with excitement as he fastened the necklace around her neck. It graced her neck beautifully; with the opals bringing out her eyes. The ochre complemented the yellow of her uniform perfectly while the blue was reminiscent of the waves the flew over so often.
"I guess, second time's the charm then, yes?" She raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah," He considered, when suddenly an alarm went off in his head, "LIN! YOU REMEMBERED?"
She laughed hard this time.
"Only airheads forget their own proposals, Tenzin."
He scoffed, "Why didn't you say anything? I- I thought you fell asleep when I asked! I couldn't remember if I did it and I was certain you didn't as you always maintained!"
"What was I to say? You already asked? I didn't want to ruin the surprise you'd been working so hard on." She smiled politely, caressing his cheek, "I did say yes when you asked me the first time though. But you had fallen asleep."
"So we spent a year pretending like neither of us knew about the proposal?" He shook his bewildered head.
"That is correct." She snorted.
"Gosh, Lin." He nuzzled into her neck, "We could've already been married by now!"
"Well, you're the airhead and I'm just not easy to surprise." She shrugged within giggles.
Tenzin picked her up and turned on his back, placing her on top of him, "Oh, I am yet to surprise you, Captain Beifong. Just you wait."

linzin au/fic idea where they never break up. Lin leaves the police force and Tenzin quits being a politician so the two can become nomads, traveling the world instead. Letting go of their ‘earthly tether,’ in a way. But also, not really.
Lin has two kids back to back (just to get it all over with). Both are airbenders, who she calls the heir and the spare in her head but never out loud. To her relief, they’re well-behaved, calm and gentle kids to raise, not anything like Su or Bumi growing up.
She gets pregnant again on accident years after (when menopause seemed more likely) and out comes a terror, an earthbender who’s more Beifong than she cares to admit.
Lin is the less fun parent out of the two of them, often playing “bad cop” in serious moments. She knows she can overreact/be too strict with them, but her terror of becoming just like her mother blinds her sometimes.
Tenzin brings up often how she’s not happy (and expresses his worry for her in the same breath). Lin always replies back by saying how she’s not unhappy, she just isn’t sure what she is.
Present day has them traveling to the South Pole so Tenzin can teach Korra airbending to complete her avatar training. On their way there, they stop in republic city only to discover just how radical these ‘equalists’ are. They heard whispers on their travels, but they didn’t realize how extreme they’ve become.
Tenzin thinks it’s better for them to stay in the South Pole so Korra can complete her training and become a fully realized avatar before coming back to help the city. But Lin, recognizing the severity of it all, eventually convinces him that they need to bring Korra to republic city now to play peacemaker.
They move back to air temple island with Korra to tell the world the avatar is back and ready to bring peace. Tenzin, Lin and their 3 kids (plus Korra) settle in an actual home on air temple island, sleeping in actual beds for the first time in a long time,
And Book 1 begins.

The afternoon sun streamed through the windows of the quaint teahouse, casting a warm, golden hue over the two figures seated at a corner table. Lin Bei Fong, with her steel-gray eyes and an expression as unyielding as the element she bent, huffed in disbelief across from Tenzin, whose monk robes seemed almost too bright in the calm interior.
"I can't believe you, Tenzin, suggesting that," Lin said with a mix of exasperation and incredulity. Her arms were crossed firmly over her chest, and her eyes narrowed just slightly, betraying her frustration.
"What? I think it's a great gift, please Lin," Tenzin defended, his voice carrying a note of earnest pleading. He leaned forward, hands clasped together as if to will her into agreement.
"I don't want to expose myself. It was something I did as a dumbass kid," Lin replied, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks. It was rare to see such a flush on her face, a testament to the embarrassment the topic stirred within her.
"I just think it would be nice as a gift. They mentioned it a few times. They have been searching to find her so she would sing at their wedding," Tenzin continued, his voice softening, hoping to sway Lin with his reasoning.
"What's that have to do with me, puff princess?" Lin jabbed back, a smirk playing on her lips despite the tension she felt. She always had a knack for bringing Tenzin back down to earth with her sharp wit.
Tenzin's glare was swift, a silent scolding for her rudeness, but it faded as he saw the tension in her jaw, the slight rigidity in her posture. "Because you're her. It would be a nice surprise gift."
"I hate them. Why should I?" Lin retorted, her voice carrying a hint of bitterness.
Tenzin hesitated, his eyes revealing an inner conflict. "Would it be selfish to admit—nevermind?"
Their eyes locked, and a silent understanding passed between them. "I never... I only ever was willing to for our—" Lin started, but her voice trailed off, heavy with unspoken words.
"I see, uh, I..." Tenzin stammered, the moment hanging between them, fragile as the steam rising from their neglected cups of tea.
"For old times' sake, I'll consider it if we find the others," Lin conceded, her voice softening just enough to reveal the hint of a compromise.
A grin spread across Tenzin's face, the corners of his eyes crinkling with delight. "Oh, I can arrange that," he declared, the confidence of an airbending master who had already considered every angle. having had this on his mind since Zhu Li and Varrick mentioned wanting to hear Tsuki Bae live.
Lin sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of her past. "Guess all those lily-livered bastards get a break, and my vocal cords too," she muttered, a reluctant acceptance in her tone.
"I would assume so. I personally can't wait to hear you sing again," Tenzin replied, the warmth in his voice contrasting with Lin's discomfort.
"Please, my stomach's already turning just thinking about it," Lin grumbled, the very idea stirring a mix of nerves and nostalgia.
"You're going to do great, and it will be a really sweet gesture," Tenzin encouraged, his eyes meeting hers with unwavering support.
"And you'll get to hear what my brain was thinking when I was a dumbass kid," Lin said, her voice laced with sarcasm yet not devoid of a certain fondness for those reckless days.
"I was already there. You were brilliant, Lin, always," Tenzin murmured, lifting his cup of tea to his lips, only to find it had gone cold during their lengthy conversation.
As Lin tried to formulate a response, Tenzin sat back, a sense of completeness filling him. With Lin back in his life, every moment felt richer, every shared silence laden with years of history, and every glance an unspoken dialogue between old friends—or perhaps something more.
Seated side by side at the wedding, Lin's nerves were palpable; her stomach did somersaults. The rehearsal had unfolded without a hitch, and the band had lavished praise upon her, insisting she sang with the same clarity as in years past. But Lin was deaf to these affirmations, fixating only on the errors she perceived.
When the moment arrived, Tenzin took his place on stage, his smile a beacon of warmth. As the band began the opening bars, the instrumentals trickled out, unrecognized at first. The bride and groom exchanged puzzled glances, curious about the impending surprise. Bumi, Kya, Su, and Pema shared in the anticipation, a collective murmur of intrigue bubbling among them.
"It is with immense joy that I present this gift to the bride and groom," Tenzin announced, his voice resonating with pride. "Please welcome to the stage... Tsuki Bae." The crowd's confusion only deepened as Lin Beifong emerged, her presence raising more questions than it answered.
"If anyone so much as whispers about this after today, I'll ensure you regret it," Lin threatened, her tone gruff. Her warning elicited chuckles from Korra and Asami, and soon the whispers transformed into excited chatter. Pema stood beside her husband, eyes alight with curiosity as they watched Lin cast a final glance over the congregation before closing her eyes, taking a deep, steadying breath.
When she began to sing, her voice was ethereal, transcending the earthly realm—an auditory marvel that captivated every listener. Her gaze initially found Tenzin, prompting a fleeting wonder about a different life where this performance was for their nuptials. But as she continued, her eyes turned to the bride and groom, who were visibly moved, tears glistening as they grasped the reality of Lin's heartfelt serenade.
Lin locked eyes with Tenzin once more as the instrumental bridge wove its spell. His eyes crinkled with a joy that was ineffable, as if a long-held dream had been realized. A silent communion passed between them, like to two ships exchanging signals in the night. Despite their lack of marriage, their own connection had never missed a beat.
The only tinge of sorrow was for the years lost to silence after their separation. Lin acknowledged that she could love him, releasing the notion of what constituted a 'normal' relationship. She could love him freely. they, as an entity, transcended common love and the concept of soul mates.Their bond was an orbit of its own, their lives eternally intertwined, regardless of the paths they took or the companions they chose. They might never share a wedding, but a ceremony could never have encapsulated what they were to each other.
Even without her seismic sense, Lin could feel the collective heartbeat of the room, an entire assembly held in hypnotized awe as she reclaimed the melody.
As the song drew to a close, a single tear dared to escape Lin's eye—regret laced with revelation. She regretted not embracing such moments sooner, realizing that she relished the experience despite her initial reluctance to step beyond the familiar confines of her comfort zone.
“Congratulations on your wedding, uh. Goodnight.” Lin awkwardly finished her performance by thanking the guys who made it possible before stepping off the stage to find a drink as anxiety washed over her once more.

Very very early draft of a scene in the next chapter of this fic:
Tumblr media
“We parted amicably.” Lin scoffed. “What?”
“Nothing,” she said, crossing her arms. “I forget how delusional you are sometimes. That’s all.”
Something inside him twisted. “We did—”
“Tenzin, we didn’t. You make yourself believe we did so you feel less bad about the whole thing.” And the wind stopped blowing. She turned away, unable to look at him. “Look… it’s late. Forget I said anything.”
“Lin—”
But she was already walking away.

The weight of a promise
Rating: G
Summary: What if Aang died before Tenzin was able to get his tattoos? Grief and loss does a lot to those impacted and people process it differently. It can be healing, bringing the affected together. It can also tear one apart.
****
It was too early, wasn’t it?
There was no real answer to that. No matter what or when, it would have always felt too early. There were never going to be enough moments with him. They knew he was running on borrowed time, but still–
They were supposed to have more time together as a family.
He should have been able to be there and see all of the important things in life. Birthdays. Weddings. Potential babies. Spirits, even the quiet moments of stillness in casual get togethers. Any and all of that. How could he do this to them?
For a moment of solitude, Tenzin sat by the cliffside on their home at Air Temple Island which overlooked Yue Bay. His focus glazed over to the far horizons where the Bay met the thick and heavy skies.
They were only in the early stages of planning it all out together. Aang had considered Tenzin was finally ready to get his tattoos, a visual representation of him officially becoming an air bending master, around a month ago.

Crack Fic idea Matchmaker Wu
Lin for whatever reason has to baby sit Wu or else deal with Reiko’s wrath. She doesn’t want to deal with a whiny Wu (who does) so she ends up giving in to his demands to go to the spa. Then he decides he’s going to give her a makeover and she is very defensive but gives up after a while… After Lin is all dolled up he demands to go to a very nice restaurant. When they get there she sees ( insert person you ship Lin with ) and realizes it was a set up all along. Wu put her on a blind date. The guy she thought was a fumbling idiot was a mastermind all along and now she’s on the most awkward date of her life while this man is grinning like there’s no tomorrow behind her. Wu stops third wheeling and disappears.
…And operation Beifong was a great success Wu would like to report. The lady was a little less grumpy than usual the next day. According to the tabloids and staff at the four elements she may or may not have made a reservation at midnight after the date he set her on. Ah, all in a day’s work for Wu matchmaker extraordinaire. The only question: who should he set up next ?

Hey I’m writing a fic
Tumblr media
and I got a comment on my ff account about the long hiatus, but they’re a guest so I can’t reply directly to them
Tumblr media
Just know this fanfic has not been abandoned. My computer broke and this is a fic too complex to write on my phone. And I just haven’t got around to getting my computer fixed/getting a new computer. Hope to be back working on this by this weekend or the next
