In a dimly lit room at the Sunset Marquis hotel, five heavily mascara’d men in black leather, each with immaculately back-combed hair, pose and purse their lips for a photographer’s lens. Only a single white curtain against the window protects their pale skin from the outside sun’s piercing rays. Last night’s expedition to famed strip club Crazy Girls has left some of them feeling bleary and achy, but, as the band Junkyard once sang so sagely, ‘That’s life in Hollywood’. Yes, this is LA, the home of all things tawdry and torrid, where giants in spandex so famously used to stride down the Strip. But this is not 1986. These events are happening in June of 2002. And one of these pouting prima donnas happens to be a member of Slipknot.

Murderdolls are the new baby of Joey Jordison – Slipknot’s diminutive drummer – but in stark contrast to his unrelentingly intense day job, their music is a trashy pastiche of glam-rock, New York punk circa 1977, schlock-horror, and heavy metal. Jordison has swapped his mask for make-up and his sticks for a guitar, and has created a band that embody practically everything you don’t ever hear on the radio these days. Alongside him are Static-X guitarist Tripp Eisen, singer Wednesday 13 who previously fronted the Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 and two friends of Tripp from LA – bassist Erik Griffin and appropriately-named drummer Ben Graves.

Just one listen to the Murderdolls’ debut album will be enough to have a legion of Slipknot fans chomping on their home-made boiler suits in confusion. Cheesy songs about grave robbing? Tributes to ‘The Exorcist’’s possessed devil-doll Linda Blair? Zombies? Mad scientists? Ghouls? What the hell is going on?

Jordison, barely five-foot-five even in his new stack heels, allows himself a sly smile.

“This is so far removed from Slipknot that it’s actually the best thing about it,” he says. “When we play, it’s just so fucking funny. We’re very serious about not being serious.”

To change gears from the testosterone-filled, uncontrolled anger of ‘Iowa’ to the sexually charged grind of Murderdolls is certainly something of a role-reversal. Butt Tripp Eisen, who, like Jordison, is also on shore leave from his day job, finds the turn-around almost hilarious.

“It’s kind of like being bisexual,” he jokes. “You’re doing a guy for now, but you’re not giving up on the ‘girl’ thing.”

The seeds of this project were sown years ago, in the mind and garage of Joey Jordison, under the name The Rejects. This was long before Slipknot and nu-metal’s all-conquering domination of the rock scene. The Rejects would eventually morph into Murderdolls, and to Joey, this is no mere side-project.

“I just feel that there’s no point in doing anything that’s even remotely similar to Slipknot,” he reasons, seated at a small table inside the cool, dark hotel room. “For me, it’s a chance to play guitar, which I played long before I played drums.”

Murderdolls began to become more than just a figment of Joey’s imagination three years ago when Slipknot toured with New Yorkers Dope, who had Eisen in their line-up at the time. The two bonded over a mutual love of such bands as Manowar, The Ramones and The Plasmatics.

“I had spent my whole life being kind of a glam guy, but also digging the heavy, heavy music,” says Tripp, a soft-spoken man with dreadlocks that sprout from his head like drooping asparagus. “It’s rare to find someone who can relate to both, and that’s what drew me to Joey. He’s into Slayer and Twisted Sister with equal intensity, and there’s not many people like that.”

To Tripp, there’s not all that much difference between the two. Both metal and glam are escapist and theatrical in nature, and he points out that Mötley Crüe and Slayer both used pentagrams on their albums.

Together, during the off time from their respective bands, Joey and Tripp dug up some of Joey’s old Rejects songs and dusted them off. They discovered a voice in North Carolina native Wednesday 13, and he brought several of his own songs with him. Then, after the album was finished, the band’s line-up was completed by Griffin and Graves.

The record itself is an absolute blast. Roaring guitars, skull-rattling drums and sneering, screaming vocals, all set to fast-paced tunes of terror and turmoil. Imagine the Ramones, the Misfits and the Dead Boys wearing long-haired wigs and goofing on love, lust and comic books. Add to the mix a soupçon of Marilyn Manson, plus a few screaming metal electric guitar leads, and stir. What pours out ain’t pretty, but it will certainly raise some eyebrows.

Joey couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of his Slipknot fans lending Murderdolls an ear.

“Not to take anything away from Slipknot, because I love that band and I’m still very much in it. But playing the guitar is not the same as playing the drums. Wearing make-up and trashy clothes is not the same as wearing coveralls and a mask.”

But what is to become of that famed Slipknot ‘mystique’? Won’t it forever be ruined by the fact that Joey is the first of them to go mask-less? Joey downplays the importance of his decision, saying that the internet has basically removed whatever secrecy Slipknot had tried to maintain anyway.

“We meet and talk to the kids without our masks every day,” he points out. He also says that Slipknot’s singer Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root will soon be performing sans masks in their own side-project, Stone Sour.

“I’ve said this a million times before, but wearing the masks is what the music ‘made’ us do,” says Joey. “It was not to just hide our faces. After knowing what Kiss looked like without their make-up for so many years, when I went to see them on their reunion tour, I didn’t give a fuck if I knew what they looked like under their make-up. When I saw them in make-up, I said, ‘That’s fuckin’ Kiss’.”

Scheduling the Murderdolls sessions and upcoming tour was never an issue with Slipknot either. All of the nine members decided that their loving maggots could allow them a few months’ rest, and many of them are pursuing solo projects.

“It was a mutual decision,” says Joey, “It wasn’t like we all needed the time away from one another. I told them that I felt that this stuff was worthy of being put out on a record. I think that it’s worthy for people to see it live as well. I’ve been spinning upside-down on a drum riser for the past 10 months, and now I’m going to go jam with this other band for a while, and they were totally cool with that. They knew from the start, even before the first Slipknot record, that I was going to do this, so it was no surprise to them.”

As for the other members, this much is known. Tripp Eisen says he’s still very much a part of Static-X, who are just about ready to wrap up their touring scenario for 2002 and will immediately begin writing their third album. Singer Wednesday 13, recruited to replace Rejects singer Dizzy, is an aficionado of ‘80s glam acts like Pretty Boy Gloyd and Tuff, and claims, quite horrifically, to have the soundtrack albums to every one of Sylvester Stalone’s movies – including ‘Over The Top’ and ‘Rhinestone’. Wednesday, who speaks in a warm southern drawl, plays a big role in the band’s theme and sound. He explains the song ‘Dawn Of The Dead’.

“I’ve always loved that movie,” he says, “and I thought, ‘How great would it be to have a Quiet Riot, ‘Cum On Feel Tha Noize’-type chorus for a song like that?’.” The singer described the sound of Murderdolls as a “Frankenstein monster we stitched together.”

The two newest members are Ben and Erik, friends of Tripp’s from LA. They do not play on the record, and both were struggling musicians who felt left out by the onslaught of post-grunge blandness and down-tuned rap-rock. Secretly, they wished they’d get hired to play just this kind of balls-out rock that just didn’t seem to exist outside of their old CD collections. They were working in shops on trendy Melrose Avenue when Tripp gave them a call.

“Once we all agreed that Nikki Sixx was God, we knew they were the right guys,” observes Wednesday.

Joey is loath to describe the band’s sound as metal or punk, though clearly it has elements of both, as well as some of the more frenzied moments of Marilyn Manson’s catalogue. In particular, ‘Dead In Hollywood’ truly sounds as if the God Of Fuck was somewhere in the mix, lending a helping shout. As it turns out, Joey asked the man himself to contribute, but not on any of the songs that have turned up on the record.

“Marilyn’s a friend of mine and we’ve always helped each other out,” says Joey. “I played some guitar for him and hooked him up with a remix, which he just recently used on the ‘Resident Evil’ soundtrack. He said that he’s going to sing on one of our songs now.” Unfortunately, what with his own deadline looming shortly, Manson’s tracks – either ‘People Hate Me’ or ‘Nineteen Seventy 666’ – may have to wait until after the release of the new Manson disc.

If all this sleaze and disorderly conduct sounds a little backward thinking, it is no accident. Even Trip agrees that the ‘Dolls pay tribute to a bygone time.

“I feel that kids today don’t know about what we grew up on, and I think that we’re trying to bring the whole package to them. The Union Underground and Sinisstar are similar in the respect that they’re bringing trashy rock back, but we just feel like we can do it better.”

Wednesday speaks with an endearing confidence that borders on pride.

“Nobody’s done it to the extent that we will,” he brags. “There were bands like Buckcherry and Beautiful Creatures who were doing the whole Guns N’Roses rock thing, but nobody’s done it at the level that we’re going to.”

Without too much Slipknot business to attend to, aside from the upcoming Reading and Leeds appearances this summer, Joey is clearly basking in his new-found freedom. Returning from the bathroom after applying his make-up, he jokes that posing for photos in Slipknot is so much easier than this current Murderdolls shoot. “You just throw on a mask and make hand gestures!”

Joey says that he’s looking forward to sharing his band with the world, and playing guitar live.

“I think that we’re original, but we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” he muses. “I think that in Slipknot, we broke down a lot of doors. I’m very proud of that, and I’m very fulfilled there. This is just another way to keep the glass full.”

 - Het schijnt dat Linda de Mol vorige week bij de opname van de Miljoenenjacht onderuit is gevallen. Ze was uitgegleden over de gekleurde glitters die altijd uitgestrooid worden over winnaars van de avond. Gelukkig heeft ze geen blauwe plekken aan de valpartij overgehouden. Ze heeft wel aangegeven dat ze in de finale de desk beter zal vasthouden. 

- De twee grote talkshows, Jinek en Op1, hadden donderdagavond allebei problemen met het geluid. Aan tafel bij Eva Jinek klonk tijdens het eerste gesprek, met BBB-leider Caroline van der Plas, doorlopend het signaal van een mobiele telefoon door het gesprek heen. Jinek vroeg de aanwezige gasten hun telefoon te checken, maar niemand leek zijn toestel aan te hebben staan.

- Eva Jinek heeft in haar nieuwsbrief voor het eerst gereageerd op het gegeven dat mensen iets aan te merken hadden op haar onlangs aangekondigde zwangerschap. In de brief noemt de presentatrice het onder meer ‘absurd’ dat ‘een stel boomers zonder enige kennis van zaken zich bemoeien met wat er in mijn baarmoeder gebeurt, en waarom’. (Red: Ik ben het helemaal met Eva eens!).

 - De komst van premier Mark Rutte naar Vandaag Inside heeft de talkshow maandagavond een kijkcijferrecord opgeleverd. Volgens Stichting KijkOnderzoek (SKO) stemden er een kleine 1,5 miljoen mensen op het programma af. Het oude record stond volgens ANP op 1,3 miljoen kijkers, kijkcijfersanalist Tina Nijkamp laat via Instagram weten dat er bij het oude record sprake was van 1.481.100 kijkers. De uitzending met Rutte deed vooraf al wat stof opwaaien. Zo zou de premier een aantal eisen hebben gesteld, zoals dat er geen Groningers, boeren of toeslagenouders in de studio zouden zitten. Dat werd later ontkend door Rutte. Ondanks dat, hebben de heren van Vandaag Inside de minister-president het vuur behoorlijk aan de schenen gelegd. Tussen alle discussies door was er ook af en toe tijd voor een lolletje. Zo reageerde Rutte zeer sportief op de prangende vraag van Derksen of ’hij wel weet wat neuken is’. „Ja, Ik weet wat het is”, verzekerde hij Derksen op een gevatte manier. (Derksen blijft een vervelende klier!)

 - Het houden van hanen wordt niet verboden in Gouda. Een meerderheid van de Goudse gemeenteraad stemde dinsdagavond tegen een hanenverbod. Een aantal inwoners wil zo'n verbod, omdat zij last hebben van een kukelende (kraaiende?) haan in hun buurt. Bewoners van de Goudse wijk Bloemendaal hebben sinds augustus last van een kraaiende haan in een achtertuin van de buren. 'Ik word een paar keer per nacht en in de ochtend vroeg wakker omdat de haan enorm hard kraait. Niet even en niet één keer, maar heel vaak en dat al maanden lang', aldus inwoner Martijn Quick. Hij en andere Gouwenaren kaartten het onderwerp daarom aan bij de gemeenteraad.

 - Vanaf deze week neemt Albert Heijn afscheid van de bekende witte, vierkante plastic broodclipjes. Deze zullen geleidelijk worden vervangen door een recyclebare, papieren variant.

 - Schrijver, columnist en televisiemaker Özcan Akyol staat in de startblokken voor een nieuwe reeks van Eus' boekenclub. Het tv-programma waarmee hij als ware literatuurzendeling het plezier van het lezen viert. Met een frisse sidekick voor de boekenweekeditie van het programma: Telegraaf-mediajournalist Kitty Herweijer. „Wij hebben ons allebei uit de armoede gelezen.”

- De nummer 2 op de kieslijst van Forum voor Democratie in de provincie Drenthe verspreidt antisemitische complottheorieën via social media. Hij twittert dat het communisme een Joods complot is, maakt reclame voor een antisemitisch boek over Joodse bankiers en prijst een account aan dat schrijft dat Joden kinderen verwerken in het vlees van McDonald's. (Red: volgens mij is deze nummer 2 echt geestelijk gestoord).

 - Ruim 25 jaar was het een vertrouwd gezicht in Den Haag en omgeving: snackbar HapSnap, met tientallen filialen in onze regio. Veel mensen herinneren zich waarschijnlijk nog het geel-rode logo met de koksmuts. In 2007 werd de boel verkocht aan Kwalitaria en een jaar of vijf geleden verdween de laatste zaak van de bekende formule uit beeld. Maar nu is HapSnap weer terug. Met één vestiging, maar wel met grootse plannen.

 - De hardloper van de NN CPC Loop die zondag onwel werd tijdens het evenement is overleden. Dat bevestigt de organisatie maandagmiddag. De deelnemer werd onwel op de Strandweg in Den Haag. De loper is na de onwelwording naar het ziekenhuis vervoerd, maar is daar later alsnog overleden. Het is niet duidelijk waardoor de deelnemer onwel werd. In verband met de privacy van het slachtoffer en de familie wil de organisatie niets kwijt over de identiteit van de overleden loper.

 - Een man is vrijdagmiddag rond 16.10 uur in een winkel beroofd van een enveloppe met geld toen hij een epileptische aanval kreeg bij de kassa tijdens het afrekenen. De politie spreekt van ‘een laffe diefstal’. Het incident vindt plaats bij bij een supermarkt aan de Rijksstraatweg/Marsmanplein in Haarlem-Noord. Het slachtoffer, die samen is met een andere persoon, krijgt de aanval tijdens het afrekenen. Terwijl zijn metgezel hulp verleent, blijft de enveloppe met geld even onbeheerd achter op de toonbank.

Op camerabeelden van de supermarkt is vervolgens duidelijk te zien dat het geld door een onbekende wordt weggenomen tijdens de hulpverlening, aldus de politie. Toen de man thuis kwam kreeg hij van schrik opnieuw een aanval. Red: Ik heb zelf Epilepsie, dus ik wil deze man veel sterkte wensen.

 - Het aantal werknemers dat door ziekte thuis bleef is in het vierde kwartaal van vorig jaar opnieuw gestegen. Dat meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS). Daarmee benadert het ziekteverzuim de cijfers uit 2000, toen het CBS het hoogste ziekteverzuim registreerde sinds de start van de metingen vier jaar daarvoor. Volgens het CBS lag het ziekteverzuimpercentage in de laatste drie maanden van 2022 op 5,6 procent. Dat betekent dat 56 van elke duizend te werken dagen werd verzuimd vanwege ziekte, legt het statistiekbureau uit. Daarbij plaatst het CBS wel een kanttekening. Zo ligt het verzuim in het eerste en laatste kwartaal van een jaar over het algemeen wat hoger dan in de tussenliggende periodes.

 - Een ontruimingsbedrijf heeft donderdag in een flat in Heerlen het stoffelijk overschot van een al vier weken vermiste 77-jarige vrouw gevonden. Hulpdiensten gingen tot twee keer toe de woning in, maar troffen haar niet aan. „Ze hebben echt steken laten vallen.” Een woordvoerster van de politie laat weten dat de vrouw een natuurlijke dood is gestorven. „Wij en andere hulpdiensten zijn inderdaad in haar woning geweest en hebben haar niet gevonden. We hebben nog meerdere opsporingsindicaties nagelopen waar mevrouw wel of niet zou kunnen zijn, maar dit heeft niks opgeleverd. Daarom zijn we weer terug naar de woning gegaan, maar door persoonlijke leefomstandigheden is zij niet eerder aangetroffen.”

Der Iron Blow Lookout ist ein freitragender Aussichtspunkt etwas außerhalb von Gormanston an der Westküste von Tasmanien. Queenstown ist durch und durch eine Bergbaustadt. Remote Guest Speakers Enrich CSUN’s Virtual Classes

From the comfort of her living room, Mayra Lopez, a third-year journalism major, got to hear from professional role models — journalists from ABC and NBC.

The journalists spoke to a class of students who produce the Valley View News broadcast program. All journalism students and faculty were invited to join through Zoom.

Since the switch to virtual classes, there have been many changes to the way students are used to learning, but there are some rewards in the new ways that some departments are dealing with this transition. CSUN’s Department of Journalism has taken advantage of this situation by bringing in guest speakers over Zoom to speak to their students about various topics, including tales from the front lines of the day’s most pressing topics.

“I really like talking to working journalists,” Lopez said. “Now that I have so much free time I’ve been going to a lot more [guest speaker events].”

Lessons from national experts

The journalism department isn’t the only department on campus enhancing its classes with experts from far away. Nearly every college has in some form included guest speakers in their rosters. Some of these guest speakers were already scheduled, either in person or virtually, and others were invited after most of campus closed, adding to the virtual learning experience.

The guest speakers come from all over the country, in a wide range of professional fields, including biology and finance, and marriage and family therapy. Some have spoken to a single class, while others were available to students throughout a department.

The speakers have helped prove that although the move to virtual learning was unplanned, the lessons can still be meaningful.

Before the switch to virtual learning, Ray Hong, professor and associate chair of the Department of Biology, had invited speakers from schools including Stanford, Washington State and the University of Mississippi to speak on campus for weekly BIOL 490, Tutorial Studies and BIOL 692, Biology Colloquium seminars. With travel to campus now impossible, Hong worked to move the seminars to the virtual space, where they were still available to all biology students.

“In a way, more students can now be in the front row seats in a virtual environment,” Hong said.

Deaf Studies professor Lissa Stapleton offered a combination of pre-recorded and live guest speakers to her DEAF 360, Deaf Culture, and DEAF 496B, Black Deaf Communities, classes, some of which were pre-planned to be virtual and some of which were originally intended to be live. The speakers for the Black Deaf Communities class were national and international experts, all of which were always scheduled to participate via Zoom. For her DEAF 415, Deaf Community Service class, a live panel was turned into a series of interviews of grad students and faculty members from across the country to expose her students to programs outside of California.

Engaging online

At least one virtual guest lecturer came from not far away — Wendy Murawski, executive director and endowed chair for the Michael D. Eisner Center for Teaching and Learning at CSUN, joined professor Marty Eisen’s special education class to model co-teaching. This was supposed to be a face-to-face endeavor, but the educators adapted.

“We wanted them to learn they don’t need to give up student engagement or differentiation just because they are in an online format,” Murawski said.

In professor Mu-Sheng “Shane” Chang’s FIN 434 Life and Health Insurance class, students were also offered the opportunity to speak with professionals, including Cristian Iglesias of The Cheesecake Factory Inc., Steve Eilers of General Reinsurance – a subsidiary of the Berkshire Hathaway Inc., and Leslie McKee of Aon, who provided a worldly view on risk management, reinsurance, and healthcare.

“The students learned about relevant subject matter from these practitioners,” Chang said. “I firmly believe their presentations were very rewarding and successful to help students better understand how risk management concepts lectured in this class are applied outside of the classroom.

The Department of Urban Studies and Planning even held mock interviews for graduating internship students with department alumni. The alumni who participate usually live within driving distance, but department chair Rob Kent said the virtual format allowed for participation of alumni from the San Francisco Bay Area, Oregon and Washington.

“It is a great event for students and for alumni alike,” Kent said. “Students get to meet alumni who were in their shoes here at CSUN before and to learn first-hand about the profession and the job market.”

Connecting with students

Adolfo Flores, a journalist at BuzzFeed News based in Texas who graduated from CSUN in 2010, has visited campus several times before. Recently, he joined professor Jose Luis Benavides’s Spanish language journalism class via Zoom to talk about his experiences reporting at the border.

“I’m able to give students advice I wish someone had given to me,” said Flores about chatting with students at his alma mater. “I also see it as a way of giving back the time my professors put into me when I was in college.”

While having guest speakers in their classrooms is nothing new to the journalism students, the new virtual format has allowed students an easier access to these events. Before, a challenge for many students was getting to campus on days they wouldn’t normally have classes.

“It may be easier in this format, because one of the challenges of getting guest speakers anywhere on the CSUN campus is that people always complain about the drive,” said Department of Journalism Chair Linda Bowen. “Now, they don’t have to leave their houses.”

Klimaatspijbelhysterie

Sedert 2003 wordt elk jaar door uitgeverij Van Dale het woord van het jaar gekozen. Zo werd 'blokkeerfries' tot het woord van het jaar 2018 verkozen. Dit jaar, anno 2019, moet 'klimaatspijbelaar' het verkozen woord worden. Een klimaatspijbelaar, is meestal een schoolplichtige scholier welke spijbelt omwille van de wens een demonstratie voor het klimaat bij te kunnen wonen. Niet zelden wordt er gespijbeld met instemming van de ouders én de betreffende school. Klimaatspijbelen is zonder enige twijfel het bizarste fenomeen van 2019 en het is allemaal in Zweden begonnen. "Skolstrejk för klimatet" (spijbelen voor het klimaat), die tekst had de Zweedse scholiere Greta Thunberg op een bord gekalkt waarmee zij voor het parlementsgebouw, de Rijksdag, te Stockholm stond om zo aandacht te vragen voor de klimaatcrisis. Welnu, daar is zij succesvol in gebleken. Niet lang daarna kreeg haar actie gevolg in andere landen. Scholieren die, en masse, plotseling van de ene op de andere dag klimaatbewust waren geworden. Heus, het was niet zomaar een hype hoor om zo een dagje niet naar school te hoeven gaan en lekker te kunnen keten op het Malieveld. Evenwel, scholieren die weigeren om naar school te gaan om te demonstreren voor een beter klimaat krijgen aandacht, in ieder geval genoeg om van Thunberg een internationale beroemdheid te maken als klimaatactiviste. Demonstreren voor het klimaat is per definitie een zinloze exercitie. Het klimaat schiet er geen reet mee op en de heren/dames politici zijn zich al geruime tijd bewust van de ernst. Massale schoolstakingen door klimaatspijbelaars gaan hieraan echt helemaal niets veranderen. Het is mij dan ook volledig een raadsel waarom ouders én docenten dergelijke kolderieke flauwekul faciliteren en sommigen hier zelfs publiekelijk mee instemmen. Het is zo een onnozele en gedachteloze attitude, die wijst op een grove kuddementaliteit en een hevige drang om zo optimaal mogelijk te deugseinen op de sociale mediaplatformen. Iedereen moet immers weten hoe begaan jouw kroost is met het klimaat en hoe zij onmiddellijke interventie eisen vanuit politiek Den Haag. Het ontbreekt deze scholieren - begrijpelijk - aan politiek, economisch en wetenschappelijk inzicht dat absoluut vereist is om überhaupt te begrijpen welke afwegingen moeten worden gemaakt, zonder direct hele industrieën en dus de economie vakkundig de nek om te draaien, om Nederland klimaatneutraal te kunnen maken. Heel naïef wellicht, maar ik koesterde de stille hoop dat de betreffende ouders er een wat behoedzamere instelling op na zouden houden en wat behoudener zouden zijn in dier enthousiasme. Ik was inderdaad naïef, de ouders zijn dikwijls zelfs nog slechter geïnformeerd dan de scholieren. Op camera geïnterviewde ouders en docenten verslikten zich zowat in de lovende superlatieven om deze collectieve bezielende spijbelactie te omschrijven. Groene politici, zoals de mensgeworden tarrels Jesse Klaver en Rob(ot) Jetten, gaan gewillig met de spijbelaars op de foto. Ouders die apetrots zijn op hun spijbelende klimaatbewuste kroost en haast weemoedig deze toewijding voor een betere wereld bewierroken in een zalvend clichéproza. Het contrast kan haast niet groter zijn met de voorgaande generaties. Kinderen mochten van alles geloven, maar niet naar school gaan, vanwege een plotselinge gehypte collectieve bevlieging, was absoluut onbespreekbaar. Nog niet zo heel erg lang, is onderwijs niet meer alleen voor de geprivileerden. Onderwijs is lange tijd enkel toegankelijk geweest voor de rijken en de geestelijken. De minder bevoorrechtte kinderen werden reeds op jonge leeftijd tewerk gesteld. Pas in 1901 trad de eerste leerplichtwet in werking. Die stelde dat kinderen van 6 tot 12 jaar onderwijs dienden te volgen. Pas in 1975 werd de wet ingevoerd die ervoor zorgde dat een kind ten minste 10 jaren onderricht moest worden, met een partiële leerlicht tot en met het jaar waarin het kind 17 jaar oud zou worden. Sedert die tijd, is de leerplicht verder uitgebreid en dit alles om Neerlands jeugd een goed fundament te verschaffen waarop zij verder kunnen bouwen. Maar nu in 2019 verkondigen, ouders én docenten, eensgezind en triomfantelijk dat de scholieren spijbelen voor het klimaat. "Hoera, wat zijn ze betrokken bij het lot van de planeet." Als dát geen schimpende minachting is voor de strijd die is gestreden voor openbaar onderwijs, dan kan ik u niet zeggen wat dat dan wel zou moeten zijn. De mateloze stupiditeit van de faciliterende volwassenen, dier leegheid, dier anti-intellectualistische houding is eenvoudigweg gênant. Hoeveel steken moeten er los zitten om te bedenken dat spijbelen, het onttrekken aan onderwijs, een goed idee is en een legitiem pressiemiddel vormt om druk te zetten op de Haagse politiek. Niets anders dan pure verachting is het gevoel wat zich van mij meester heeft gemaakt. Deze spijbelende scholieren kan ik niks kwalijk nemen. Zij maken gebruik van de gelegenheid om mét goedkeuring een dag school te skippen en fijn lol te trappen, onder het mom van demonstreren voor het klimaat. Om daarna, wanneer ze hun borden en spandoeken hebben weggepleurd, een vette bek te halen bij de Burger King of MacDonald's. Exact wat je van tieners kunt verwachten. Uiteraard, een aantal zullen heus wel serieus zijn begaan met het klimaat en zij huppelen dan ook volgaarne achter Sint Thunberg aan. Want Greta is de Groene Messias die vol bezieling virtuoos het klimaatevangelie verkondigt aan haar internationale congregatie. Mejuffrouw Thunberg is de marionet die kundig wordt bespeeld vanuit de coulissen door de fundamentalistische klimaatactivisten. Als welbespraakte 16-jarige is zij het gedroomde boegbeeld voor deze activisten. Maar tevens is zij een minderjarig meisje, lijdend aan obsessief-compulsieve persoonlijkheidsstoornis, ADHD én het syndroom van Asperger. Waar men normaliter dergelijk gedrag zou kaderen. Het nooit zou toestaan dat mensen meegaan in de obsessie van het kind. Het nooit zouden toestaan dat dergelijk gedrag wordt gevoed en gestimuleerd. Eenvoudigweg omdat het kind anders continu overprikkeld en gespannen zou rondlopen. Thunberg wordt daarentegen juist internationaal een podium geboden en zij wordt overladen met prikkels zonder dat er rekening wordt gehouden met haar mentale toestand. Het resultaat zagen we tijdens de top van de Verenigde Naties op 23 september 2019 in New York. Alwaar zij gelijk het personage van Linda Blair in 'The Exorcist' bezeten leek te zijn. Met haar ogen vol vuur sprak zij het gehoor toe. Doch, voor de klimaatactivisten zijn haar toespraken en mediaoptredens té waardevol om haar niet te gebruiken. Dus dat dit kind wellicht raakt opgebrand, psychisch uitgeput, wordt er op de koop toegenomen. De waarschuwing van vermaard Australisch psycholoog Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg wordt in de wind geslagen. Hier wordt met instemming van velen een zestienjarig meisje misbruikt voor de politieke agenda van een aantal activisten. Late het duidelijk zijn. De opwarming van de aarde is inderdaad een groot probleem, dat wij het hoofd moeten bieden. Echter, is er nog geen consensus bereikt op de manier waarop dit moet gebeuren. De 'oplossingen', aangedragen vanuit de activistische bewegingen wier toverwoord "duurzame energie" heet, worden keurig en minutieus door Thunberg gepapegaaid. Deze zijn - helaas - qua efficiëntie ontoereikend en onpraktisch. De Wet van Betz stelt dat het fysisch onmogelijk is om meer dan 16/27 oftewel 59,3% van de kinetische energie in wind te vangen. In de praktijk behalen de windturbines vaak niet eens een efficiëntie van 45%. Wanneer het windstil is heeft een windturbine een doelmatigheid van 0%. Maar wanneer die wieken wel draaien zijn windturbines een ernstig verstorende factor van de natuur en het leefmilieu van alle dieren in de nabije omgeving. Ik weet zeker dat verreweg de meesten van u een dergelijk bestaan niet ambiëren. Ja, we moeten wat doen aan de opwarming van de planeet. Maar hele economieën naar de klote helpen is geen acceptabele optie. De wetenschap biedt mogelijkheden en die dienen te worden benut. En zoals gewoonlijk worden er allerlei bijzaken aangehangen. Milieuactivisten, feministen en mensen met een autistische stoornis lijken hun boegbeeld te hebben gevonden. Greta is verworden tot hun gouden kalf en de Israëlieten rebelleren tegen Mozes. Welnu, één ding staat voor mij als een paal boven water als het gaat om heilige huisjes. Heilige huisjes daar schop je tegen aan en die vertrap je totdat die vermaledijde waanzin plaats heeft gemaakt voor de reden en de wetenschap. Het is tijd voor kernenergie!

BNers en goede doelen 

Ik word toch zóóó moe van die BNers en hun goede doelen. De één is nog deugdelijker dan de ander. Laat ik voorop stellen dat ik de meeste BNers in dezelfde categorie plaats als een hele grote groep medelanders en ander import volk. Totaal overbodig. Voegen allemaal niets toe en brengen alleen maar ellende. Vandaag de dag ben je al BNer als je naam 1 keer genoemd wordt op een braderie in Schin op Geul. Ik kan die koppen niet meer zien. Kijk voor de gein eens een keer naar RTL Boulevard en Shownieuws. Je weet niet wat je ziet. Een grotere club eigenpijpers bestaat er niet. Ze gaan vuistdiep bij elkaar en de ene veer na de andere wordt vakkundig in het sterretje van een collega geplant. Zo'n Peter vd Vorst is een schoolvoorbeeld van een kwakkie dat moeders door had moeten slikken. Niets aan die man is echt. Op het moment dat die griezel in beeld verschijnt krijg ik rooie vlekken in mijn nek en bulten op mijn rug. 

Terug naar het goede doel. Ik ga hier niet roepen dat alle BNers huichelaars zijn. Daarvoor heb ik veel te veel mensenkennis. Marco Borsato is ambassadeur van Warchild en ik ben er 100% van overtuigd dat Marco Borsato dat doet zonder enige bijbedoeling. Hij doet dat werk al jaren en treedt niet te pas en te onpas naar buiten met zijn ambassadeurschap. Prima zaak. De meeste BNers doen het echter ''omdat het heurt''. Verbinden aan een goed doel verhoogt nu eenmaal de marktwaarde en als er iets is waar je willekeurig iedere bekende Nederlander uit de 3e en 4e divisie voor wakker kan maken dan is het geld. Ze vreten zelfs stront om maar in het nieuws te komen. Ik heb gekscherend weleens geroepen dat als je bekend maakt dat er een NOS camera hangt op de kruising Ferdinand Bolstraat/Ceintuurbaan iemand als Frits Barend constant langs komt fietsen. Frits is nu eenmaal mediageil in het kwadraat. 

De laatste weken is het weer een komen en gaan van onze nationale do-gooders. Johnny de Mol is inmiddels overal aangeschoven om de goedheiligman te spelen, tante Linda kon natuurlijk niet achterblijven en gisteren zaten ineens Nick & Simon aan tafel bij Tijd voor MAX. Simon had zelfs een hoedje opgezet. Zal wel bij een nieuw imago horen. Eén van de allerslechtste presentatrices uit de Nederlandse tv geschiedenis, de oubollige Martine van Os, kondigde de heren aan en vertelde ons dat Nick & Simon samen in de klas hebben gezeten. In die tijd is bij hun het belang van goed onderwijs ontstaan en daarom zijn ze ambassadeur geworden van Edukans. Ik verzin het niet. Edukans is een organisatie die onderwijs biedt in ontwikkelingslanden. Een normaal kind denkt op school aan van alles en nog wat, maar niet aan het belang van goed onderwijs. Maar ja, Nick & Simon zijn nu eenmaal geen normale kinderen geweest. 

Met het steunen van doelen in Verweggistan kom je vanzelf terecht bij de acties van GIRO555. Er hoeft maar ergens ter wereld een flinke regenbui los te barsten of een aardbevinkje van 2 op de schaal van Richter en de vaste kliek BNers hangen 's morgens onmiddellijk aan de telefoon om hun plek in het belpanel op te eisen. Testbeeld Peter R. de Vries loopt dan dagen in zijn GIRO555 t-shirt rond. Bij Boulevard, bij Pauw of Jinek en bij Late Night. Want Peter deugt. Ik vraag me af hoeveel van die shirtjes ons nationaal geweten eigenlijk in zijn kast heeft liggen. Het zal toch niet zo zijn dat die alles- en betweter 's avonds met een flesje bubbels en een naar zweet meurend t-shirt aan komt zetten bij één van zijn vaste scharreltjes. GIRO555 is het moment voor een BNer om zelf zijn of haar momentje te pakken. Je doet er pas echt toe als je benaderd wordt om een promo filmpje op te nemen. Ik krijg altijd de slappe lach als ik Claudia de Breij met een emo gezicht zie bedelen voor GIRO555. Of is het hinniken ?

Progressive Lawmakers Take Aim at Landlords With Rent Control, Tax Proposals

Progressive lawmakers throughout the U.S. are proposing tighter controls or new taxes on big property owners, stepping up the pressure after Democrats enjoyed big gains in the November elections.

In Illinois, New York and Oregon, legislators are pushing bills to introduce or strengthen apartment rent controls. Newly elected California Gov. Gavin Newsom has said changes to a decades-old constitutional amendment that has kept taxes low for many commercial property owners are “on the table.”

The powerful real-estate lobby in the past has successfully derailed bills that would tax or pressure their business. In one major victory, it played a key role in weakening rent-control rules in New York City in the 1990s.

But there are fresh signs the industry is losing clout in New York and other blue-leaning states after a populist wave swept through many state legislatures.”

“Landlords have had their run of the playground, and we’re taking it back,” said New York Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, a Democrat.

Members of the real-estate community have started pushing  back. If all the proposed changes were to pass, “it would be a serious financial blow to the industry,” said John Banks, president of the trade group Real Estate Board of New York.

He argued that making it impossible for landlords to raise rents on some units would make it harder for them to pay for repairs and renovations needed to maintain rent-stabilized apartments.

But Democrats, who now control New York’s Assembly, Senate and governor’s mansion for the first time since 2010, are working on bills designed to protect tenants and curtail the ability of property owners to raise apartment rents.

In another sign that the industry’s clout is diminishing, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and state Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris recently vowed to stop accepting campaign contributions from real- estate developers.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made a point of vowing to “stand up to the luxury developer lobby” during last year’s election campaign.

“It’s a little puzzling,” said Jordan Barowitz, vice president of public affairs at the Durst Organization, a Manhattan-based real-estate developer. “We don’t make cigarettes or guns. To say this industry is taboo seems to be painting with a very broad brush, and also a bit of scapegoating.”

It isn’t all bad news for the real-estate industry. California voters in November rejected a ballot measure that would have made it easier for local government to implement apartment rent controls.

Developers could benefit from proposed laws in several states that would ease zoning rules and make it easier to build urban housing. Doug Bibby, president of the trade group National Multifamily Housing Council, said he is happy about the growing interest in housing policy, pointing out that it is central to the presidential campaigns of Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren.

“The good news is they’re looking for solutions,” he said. “We haven’t seen such an interest in housing in almost my whole career.”

Still, Illinois state Rep. Will Guzzardi last month reintroduced a bill to overturn the state’s ban on rent controls. The state’s new governor, J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, has said he supports a repeal of the rent-control ban.

In California, a campaign to partially repeal a constitutional amendment called Proposition 13, which puts a cap on annual increases in a property’s tax assessment so long as it doesn’t sell, goes to the polls next year, setting up a showdown between tax-reform advocates and property owners.

The referendum would keep a cap on taxes in place for homes and apartment buildings, but would repeal it for commercial properties.

Last year, the California attorney general’s office estimated that such a change would increase property tax revenues by $6.5 billion to $10.5 billion a year.

Those taxes could have a “significant” impact on real-estate values and hit several large property owners hard, according to a report from research firm Green Street Advisors.

Commercial property developers are preparing “a pretty strong effort to fight this,” said Joel Marcus, chairman of Pasadena. Calif.-based Alexandria Real Estate Equities, which owns several commercial properties in the state.
