Lin Yutang

Fue un escritor y filósofo chino, nacido en Changzhou en 1895.

Lin fue hijo de un ministro presbiteriano chino, fue educado para el ministerio pero renunció al cristianismo cuando tenia poco menos de 20 años y se convirtió en profesor de inglés.

Cursó estudios universitarios en el St. John de Shanghai, adscrito a la Universidad de Harvard, en donde aprendió lengua y literatura inglesa. Mas tarde marchó al extranjero para completar su educación occidental, al obtener una beca para el doctorado en la Universidad de Harvard, abandonó esta para marchar a Francia y finalmente a Alemania en donde estudió en la universidad alemana de Leipzig. 

A su regreso a China, ejerció la docencia en la Universidad de Pekin de 1923 a 1926, donde impartió clases de filología inglesa.

Para hacer realidad su proyecto de acercar las culturas china y occidental, desarrolló un sistema de indización del idioma chino, y colaboró activamente en un plan oficial que pretendía facilitar la romanización de la lengua china.

A partir de 1928, Lin se instaló en los Estados Unidos, en donde se dedicó al cultivo de la creación literaria y a la divulgación de diversos aspectos de su país, su cultura y su gente.

En 1932, Lin estableció una especie de revista satírica de estilo occidental totalmente nueva en China en ese momento. Tuvo un gran éxito y pronto presentó dos publicaciones más. En 1935, publicó el primero de sus muchos libros en inglés, “Mi país y mi gente”, fue traducido ampliamente y durante años se consideró como un texto estándar sobre China. Al año siguiente, se mudó a Nueva York para satisfacer la demanda popular de sus relatos históricos y novelas.

En 1937 publicó la obra titulada “La importancia de vivir”, y en 1939 publicó su reconocida novela inglesa “Momento de Pekin”. 

Las publicaciones de Lin Yutang se convirtieron en best-sellers que rebasaron el ámbito norteamericano para darle una proyección internacional.

Lin Yutang murió en Hong Kong en marzo de 1976 y su casa fue convertida en un museo que administra la Universidad Soochow de Taipei.
