Cine: Nate, Mejor tarde que nunca (2022)

A sus trece años, Nate Foster (el sensacional Rueby Wood) tiene muy en claro que su sueño es brillar en Broadway, la meca del teatro mundial. En un apasionado de los musicales con una meta específica, a la cual intenta llegar comenzando en una obra escolar. Tras fallar ese objetivo se propone uno mayor; aprovechar la ausencia de sus padres (Norbert Leo Butz y Michelle Federer, realmente casados tras conocerse en una puesta de “Wicked”, un musical) y escabullirse de la mirada de su hermano mayor Anthony (Joshua Bassett) para escapar hacia Nueva York. Allí, acompañado por su fiel amiga Libby (Aria Brooks), intentará probar su suerte en un casting para el musical de “Lilo & Stitch” (basado, claro, en la película de 2002).

Perdidos y casi sin dinero, pronto descubrirán que es cierto que los sueños cuestan y se verán obligados a tomar decisiones imprevistas frente a la posibilidad del rechazo. Allí es donde entra a jugar un rol muy importante el personaje de Heidi (Lisa Kudrow), actriz en paro que lleva ya mucho tiempo distanciada de su hermana, la madre de Nate y reconoce en su sobrino el fuego artístico que una vez sintió.

Al ver esta película, estrenada en Disney+, queda más que claro que Nate es un personaje gay. No es algo que se diga abiertamente, pero a lo largo de la historia se deja entrever claramente. No tanto por el simple hecho de que el muchacho sea un fanático declarado de la comedia musical como por ciertos detalles específicos, como la tapa del celular en glitter, la elección de una pata de conejo (artificial, desde luego) decorada con los colores del arco iris o la advertencia de la pasajera de un autobús a la joven cuando Libby le confiesa que está enamorada de él, que le rechaza, convirtiéndose el el signo más claro de la homosexualidad de Nate. Y como si lo referido no fuese suficiente, hay un detalle no menos importante: la película ha sido dirigida por Tim Federle, autor del libro que le dio origen, al cual le concedió algún tinte autobiográfico. Federle, abiertamente gay, es también un amante empedernido de la comedia musical (ha creado “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”, trabajo que también puede verse por Disney+).

Calvin's parents decide to take a Hawai'ian vacation. They're not sure how much of it their son will tolerate but they would like to do at least a few things that involve sandy beaches and scenic cycling routes. They are therefore pleased when Calvin seems to make friends with a local girl about his own age and the two of them run off to play

Now, from Calvin's point of view what has happened is that he spotted actual aliens, and starts trying to bring this to the attention if the adults. But the tourists are like, "that's nice, go shoot 'em with your water gun, have a good time," and the locals are like, "yeah, they're an older couple who decided to retire here. Happens all the time." Eventually, it becomes clear that Spaceman Spiff is going to have to handle it himself.

From Lilo's point of view, Jumba and Pleakley are her gay uncles, do you mind? Calvin does mind, and so the two of them spend the rest of the afternoon terrorizing Kaua'i in the effort to destroy one another while the aliens alternate between bailing them out of trouble and attempting to escape.

Hobbes and Stitch, meanwhile, are calmly playing checkers and drinking non-alcoholic margaritas.
