On iZombie and How Putting on Different Lenses Gives You Different Readings
I didn't think about the central metaphor in iZombie much when I originally watched the show during season 1, but now that I finally finished the show I have some thoughts.
A lot of the shallow literary criticism I see on this site sort of boils down to either "you're stupid for not reading into it that this plotline is problematic even if the author didn't intend it" or "you're stupid for reading that much into it BECAUSE the author didn't intend it". So today we're going to take the position that multiple unintentional readings of the same text can and do exist and coexist without anyone being stupid (unless you're blind to queer subtext, in which case you should consult with a doctor). So let's put on some lenses in the order in which I received them and look at this piece of work.
Lens 1: The Trauma Narrative
I first watched this show when I was still living with my grandparents after my stepdad had been jailed for being a pedophile and child abuser. I was still processing what had happened to me, but I wasn't processing it well because I didn't have therapy at the time and was still living in an emotionally abusive and invalidating environment. Within 5 minutes of starting this show, I was convinced that Liv was a metaphor for trauma. And I'm not the only person who noticed that. I remember seeing a critique at the time about how if you take away the Zombieism, the Boat Party Incident could be paralleled with the trauma of acquaintance rape since it occurred at a party and was perpetrated by a drug dealer who had been offering her drugs earlier in the night.
The boat party was clearly a traumatic incident for Liv. I saw my own experiences reflected in her. She had a whole life path laid out for her, but it was derailed by an experience that made her fundamentally unable to relate to and socialize normally with other people. She broke up with her fiance and became socially withdrawn, refusing to talk about what had happened to her out of fear of the social stigma attached. She even underwent a drastic fashion overhaul and completely changed her career path. It sounded familiar. You could even equate brains in this equation to Liv seeking out an addiction in order to make herself able to function within society that isn't giving her the tools she needs to process.
Lens 2: The Racial and Straight Passing Metaphor
I hadn't really thought of this AT ALL until I started rewatching. Oh give me a break - I was a barely 20-year-old white girl who hadn't even thought about the possibility of a sexuality when I first watched it. But upon doing a rewatch and seeing some behind the scenes stuff, it's pretty clear that the writers were going for a passing metaphor.
But I'm not entirely sure that it holds up under close scrutiny.
On the surface, sure. It's a narrative about discrimination where someone must "pass" as human in order to survive. Understandable. But it sort of breaks down when you recall that it's a show about zombies who eat people. When they "rage out", I can only think of "super predators". The implication being that there are good minorities and bad minorities - the good ones being those who are willing to pass for your comfort and the bad ones being the ones who can't or won't. Especially when equating zombie struggles to LGBT issues, I see a sexually transmittable zombie virus as akin to the AIDS virus in a JK Rowling sort of "intentionally infecting people" sort of way.
Lens 3: I'm Autistic and You Didn't Ask
Something occurred to me right around the time that the zombie virus was introduced to the flu vaccine supply: This is gonna create a whole new generation of in-universe anti-vaxxers.
My immediate reaction was 'oh fuck, how will anyone in Seattle ever trust a vaccine again'? Zombie cure, what? I bet that's more zombies intentionally infecting people! The zombie truthers will have a field day!
It was a baffling choice to me from the beginning to have a group of militant zombies intentionally infecting people to protect their way of life. I simply could not wrap my head around why you would want to still have this virus and why you'd want your kids to have it. You have to eat brains to survive and you're constantly at risk of horrible symptoms if you don't get them. The entire zombie population is easily controlled by the withholding of brains by what again seems like a pretty blatant addiction metaphor. This is horrifying. Why would you want that? Then to go and intentionally infect others with this virus...I just don't get it. You should want a cure. You really should.
Of course I thought about it further and knew they were still going for their passing metaphor. Of course I didn't believe zombies deserved to be murdered in the streets. I thought all available resources should be going to making a vaccine and a cure. I didn't think this was equivalent to the struggle for equal rights we've seen in real events because of the aforementioned "raging out".
But then I thought about it again. If there's any group that the struggle more closely parallels, it's the disabled community - particularly those of us with autism. Liv is trying to pass in a world that isn't set up to accommodate her particular needs but she's able to pass as a "high functioning" zombie. Her brain of the week could be compared to a hyperfixation. "Low functioning" zombies would be the Romeros, who physically cannot "pass for human".
This is a theme that comes up in most everything I write, in some form or other. The autism passing for human metaphor. Because I've never felt like I actually do. Some days I can be Liv-ing it up, but other days I'm halfway Romero. But when I tackle the issues of not passing for NT by creating an alien or a nephilim, I'm doing it with the knowledge that passing isn't the end goal. And I guess, for that reason, I respect the choice at the end to not cure Liv.
But even this reading sort of falls apart when you think of how "high functioning" zombies like Liv would get to throw Romeros under the bus because they're too far gone to be useful to society so they're expendable. That's actually not even the main reason it would fall apart. The main reason is that they intentionally infected people with a zombie virus using a vaccine. I mean every anti-vaxxers argument is that vaccines cause this, right?
And you really don't want to equate disability to a virus. Viruses are deadly things that should be eradicated. Autism is not.
God, this reading is so particularly complicated for me. Because the closest disability parallel you can make is some strange mixture of autism and AIDS. And as an AIDS parallel, it can almost make some commentary. There's the fear and social isolation thrown at people with a confirmed diagnosis. The incredible stigma and misinformation. Also how resources are withheld from people who cannot afford to pay for them. But you really don't want this as an AIDS metaphor because, again, there were people intentionally infecting people.
Which brings me back to why would you want to be a zombie? The side effects are too severe. Even if you're dying of a terminal illness, how is that not swapping it out for something worse? And what happens to people infected as children? Do they stay children forever? Did we learn nothing from Interview with the Vampire?
And even typing that last paragraph was complicated to me, because it harkens back to arguments people have about curing autism. That it's supposedly a life-destroying disease and that being alive with autism is worse than being dead. Hell, even throw in the perpetual child thing.
I'm reading this show with all these mixed feelings. They all exist within my brain, so it's very confusing up here. I get multiple readings and I'm just one person! It's very difficult to write a supernatural metaphor for an actual social issue, because it's very VERY easy for it to have unintentionally shady readings that don't really work upon closer scrutiny. And you know why that is? Because people who consume media come from all different backgrounds and different life experiences. I still don't exactly know how I feel about the central metaphor of iZombie. All I really know is that it's weird that they didn't address the in-universe anti-vaxxers.

[ XAVIER SERRANO / POLYTROPOS / CAERUS / MUSE 36 ] / [ CRISTIANO MONTERO ] is a [ TWENTY-ONE ] year old [ BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ] major. [ HE ] is known for being [ CHARMING & CLEVER ] but [ INSOUCIANT & INSENSITIVE ].  when i think of them, i imagine [ A CHEEKY WINK FROM ACROSS THE BAR, LATE NIGHT ‘U UP?’ TEXTS, THE CLENCH OF A JAW BEHIND A COCKY SMIRK, RICH BOYS DON’T HAVE HEARTS ]. and even though they’re a proud HU student now, we all have our roots. theirs run back to them being a [ MHP ( AQUA ) ] graduate.  i asked around and it turns out they [ AREN’T ] an AOP student. in their interview, they managed to woo the admissions team by [ PRESENTING A FIVE-FIGURE INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO THAT WAS STARTED FROM $10 ]. i guess that’s all there is to know! unless…
howdy hey frands! i’m jocey ( 24, she/her, est ) & this is my trash son, cristian. not me reusing an old intro and still getting this up late……. mmYEP luv that for me! if you would like to plot, hit that like button & i’ll come your way or feel free to hmu on discord ( jocey#9154 ).
full name : cristiano javier montero de barra nickname : mostly goes by cristian age : twenty-one sexuality : heterosexual hometown : madrid, spain / los angeles, california high school : marble hill prep ( aqua house ) HU house : polytropos major : business administration extracurriculars : eleusinian circle ( legacy ), soccer ( centre forward )
cristian is the second and youngest born to javier montero and alisa de barra. his dad is the CEO of montero properties, the developer behind many big name casinos and resorts around the world, while his mom is an actress who starred in several spanish telenovelas and hollywood films.
originating from spain, the montero family had always been a familiar face in the media, with both cristian and his older sister having large followings on social media. the montero’s had a reputation for living extravagantly and lavishly, and often flaunted their 1% status.
out of the whole family, arguably the one with the most controversial reputation was cristian — one of the heirs to the montero fortune, fuckboy extraordinaire with an impressively long list of ex lovers, and all around entitled trust fund brat ( whEW hate that!! ). taking full advantage of his family name, he was always seen at the exclusive events and partying, even hooking up, with some well-known names.
but with the family name also came the expectation to be the picture perfect son and the responsibility to carry on the family legacy. unfortunately, parents never quite get exactly what they hoped for from their children, do they?
if there’s one thing you should know about cristian is that he will never do anything if he felt forced into it. his parents learned early on that hiring a good PR team and shipping their son off to a boarding school ( marble hill prep ) was easier than forcing him to behave. the fact that cristian’s dad was a MHP and HU alum and the montero’s family were big donors might have helped to keep him from getting expelled on one or two occasions.
still, to some extent, cristian did the bare minimum just to keep his parents off his back and his bank account essentially bottomless. he got good grades ( whether it was completely based on his own merits was a different story ), showed up to important events ( granted he was always drunk and late ), and charmed the pants off of interviewers and his admirers ( sometimes quite literally ).
attending hatchett unversity was just another thing that he did to keep his trust fund ( or so he says ). and who was he to turn down the good ol’ college experience? it was also the perfect way to keep his side business ( read: drug ring ) going.
running a boarding school turned college drug ring was never exactly something he’d planned on doing. like with most things in cristian’s life, the opportunity sort of just fell into his lap and he decided to run with it. call it a bored rich kid thing, but there was just something about earning his own cash in such a risky way that made it that much sweeter.
while those who know cristian may be aware of his connection to this drug ring, most assume that he’s just dealing and/or using his rich boi connections to bring in customers. only a select few know that he’s actually the brains behind the surprisingly well thought-out operation, and he prefers to keep it that way.
cavalier fuckboy with a heart of gold… ( underneath a shit ton of asshole layers, that is ) basically summed up cristian. he always puts out this very lazy, devil-may-care image of himself, and acts like someone who could not give two shits about anyone other than himself. call him a selfish asshole and he’d probably agree with you. but when it comes to his closest friends, the ones he considered to be his real family, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for them.
most write cristian off as this spoiled, reckless and directionless loose cannon, who maybe had one braincell on a good day. but underneath it all, he’s a lot smarter and more calculating than many people give him credit for and believe it or not, actually does think things through. but he believed that expectations just led to disappointment, so it was better to not have anyone expect anything of you. hence the perfected facade he’s kept up for as long as he could remember.
he is, however, not so smart when it comes to his love life and is notoriously bad at juggling his booty calls. as in, getting all their names mixed up, and running into a booty call number three, who he’d ghosted, when he was with booty call number five. but then again… could it all just be an act to get out of any and all potential relationships? who knows?
WANTED CONNECTIONS. most connections are open to multiple people filling it, unless it’s crossed out. and ofc i’m always open to any ideas not listed here!
RICH BOI SQUAD ━  they’re those guys. the popular, rowdy bros who are always seen together, they throw the best parties and cause a bunch of mayhem together. honestly just a bunch of obnoxious alpha dudes who think they’re hot shit.  taken by kennedy king
#1 SINCE DAY 1  ━  cristian’s best bro since the beginning of time ( or close enough ), who’s been there through all of his constant shenanigans and wild times.  taken by felix könig
BEST GAL PAL  ━  probably one of the few girls cristian’s managed to not try to hook-up with, or constantly flirt with. someone who helps him remember the names of all the girls he’s hooked up with plz lol. it’s rare that he’s protective over someone, but he’d absolutely throw hands for her if needed.  taken by caroline fitzgerald
CONFIDANT  ━  someone who actually knows cristian very well and sees through his lazy rich boy act. one of the very few people who he’s completely opened up to and genuinely cares about not fucking up their friendship.  taken by florence trask
MOM FRIEND  ━  basically a mama bear who looks out for cristian and may be one of the few people he actually listens to. doubles as his moral conscience/good influence when he wants to do dumb rich boy things.  taken by giada vitale
PSEUDO SIBLING  ━  they have a sibling-like relationship, where he’ll annoy them sometimes and they mom friend him. but they’re always looking out for each other.  taken by odette könig
CHILDHOOD FRIEND  ━  someone he grew up with. they could still be friends to this day, maybe they grew apart, or maybe they never really clicked.
UNLIKELY FRIEND  ━  the last person you’d expect to be friends with cristian. possibly met during a school project or something, and they realized that he’s… actually… not that bad?? despite what everyone says about him and his reputation, y/m sees that he’s not really as big of an asshole as he comes off and is actually kind of tolerable one on one. kind of.  taken by dorian garcia
FAVOURITE ANNOYANCE  ━  they got on cristian’s nerves at first, but eventually, they grew on them. whether he admits it or not, they do have some kind of friendship and deep down, he does enjoy their company.  taken by astrid mae
DEALERS  ━  basically dealers who work for cristian, who is the supplier. he may seem like a clueless hot mess, but rest assured, he takes care of his own. as long as that loyalty is returned.  taken by felix könig
ON & OFF  ━  cristian has had a lot of flings and hook-ups, but this person has been the one constant in his life. their “relationship” ( if you can call it that ) is kinda messy because he ( and maybe she as well? ) won’t commit, but is also surprisingly chill.
HOOK-UPS / FWBS  ━  whether you like cristian or not, people can’t really deny that he’s good-looking rip. he’s known to have a bit of a roster of girls that he hits with those late night booty-calls/texts.  taken by diana radcliffe
PAST HOOK-UPS / FWBS / ONE NIGHT STANDS  ━  homeboy has been around the block and back more times than he can count on two hands, so he’s definitely got a long list of ex-luvas. especially ones who hate him cuz he’s the worst™.  taken by isadora banks, daphne moon
ENEMIES  ━  cristian’s the kind of guy who easily has a lot of people who don’t like him. he practically has no filter, so his big mouth and careless words are bound to rub some people the wrong way. or maybe he screwed y/m over to save his own ass.  taken by belinda torres, camille jung

Gun toting hippies and brain sex
OK before I get into this I do a lot of games. This game is more of a mutant and masterminds home brew anti hero campaign you have been warned So yeah I've been in about 4 mutants and masterminds games. I've played super hero games before with Marvel/DC. But this game has me thinking a lot on how my character would go about keeping her identity secret. I guess some background is needed now so allow me to set the scene.
Zladnoyna, Siberia Russia Iron curtain campaign Modern day The idea of the world is that after the cold war the communist party is still going on and is now finally collapsing. Unknown to the common people pole commissars the secret police have no one to hold them back. The inner walls of the communist state are keeping the members of the communist party safe from the outside world that the common folk live in. A new drug called dark stain is the drug of choice for druggies who struggle day by day to keep their fix of the drug or succumb to their dark sides. Conspiracies are rampant in the city as the propaganda is still being fed through media, schools and newspapers. The only truth the common folk can trust is their word of mouth but even then must be careful of their words because mother Russia is still listening.
With this in your mind you can now see why I was excited. For me as a player and history nut this is a dream. I have always had a interest in Russian politics of the past and even the fashion and architecture of the country. On top of that add in the iron age of comics when antiheroes came out I'm in. In this world you character can freely be an ass to anyone for any reason and have just cause almost. At the same time for me I remember with this campaign the literature from George Orwell (animal farm and 1984) along with the ideas of repo genetic rock opera, underworld, and sincity. It was from that I was able to shape my characters way of thinking but at the same time I also used the idea of tragic backstory to make a chapters come to life. In t party as of now we have a commissar, a science experiment, a mafia member, a poisoner, and druggie teacher. Each character is struggling with their own monsters, some have alliances to one another that go back a ways and as of such the watch over each other like family. Others are looked at as odd or not even human. Some are respected but at the same time feared. They cover each other and at the same time can easily ruin the other's life. A mutual trust is placed between party members. A if you scratch my back I'll scratch yours way.
In the next few posts as I go I'll be cataloging each adventure on wednesdays this is the sum up of the first game of the iron curtain. The game opens with a protest march. It is a normal peaceful march. The streets are crowded with basically no sight of the protest becoming violent. Its right now no more than a shouting match between the two sides. Under a tree two women sit with signs and a bottle of vodka. Along with these two a odd girl comes up and makes mention of looking to poison someone in the conversation that is struck between the three. One makes motion to move from the girl as they are trying to keep from being caught up in something to get them thrown in jail. A ways way from this a half bear half allosaurus anthro is now balling up into a ball to get to where he can see what is going on in the throng. Sadly although holding back his action causes the protest to turn from a shouting match to a all out brawl. This caused the commissars to fire back and to try and cause the crowd to stop and disperse.
In the midst of the fight the two women make a run for it. One flings the other over their shoulder and runs the third fallowing them and run through a portal into a dark nightclub. This club is colored in venta black paint on the walls, the lights are darklights and heavy death metal is playing in the background. The feeling is off in this place their brains trying to process. A sign barely seen in the darkness reads vantablack club. To those that can smell it the drug dark stain is heavy on the establishment and people those that do not use the drug are easily spotted from the fact of the scent of the drug is not in their bodies. All around however are those tained by the addiction. Dancers are fully monochrome as if they had stemmed from a black and white movie or cartoon from the political propaganda films of old. They make their way to the bar while one makes their way to a dealer and makes a transaction oddly it is much cheaper then they get from their dealer and they head back to the others to start drinking. They are joined by the dino bear and comassar all sit and talk a while before the teacher stands like a robot and walks to a wall disappearing. While 2 of the party freak out the rest seem calm. The dino bear pops their head through informing the others she seems to be hypnotically dancing. Once she is snapped out of it she is pulled from the room and they all seem to calm. After a bit one wishes to go home but is unable to find there way not knowing where they are. A deal is struck for a portal to send them out of the bar but at the cost of 200 ruples.
When payed the portal is opened they are out of the bar but further from their destination as two drunk women laugh in the bar. They look around finding the park they and the dino bear are in is covered in hippies and not just any gun toting mk17 rifle hippies all showing they are armed but will not shoot unless shot at. They speak to a passer by and are confused at their words. They ask another who seems to be floating. When really the strawberry blond witch is levitating she is enlightened beyond the means of the person asking questions of her. She is informed she is lost. She is asked where she would like to be and at the snap of the fingers she is home free to mix poisons as she pleases. All the while cursing and cursing the woman that sent her in the wrong direction and at the same time planning to confront her once again. The dinobear likes the park. He stays a while. Then walks home past the protest line allowed to go and come so long as he makes no trouble.
The next day the poisoner looks up the teacher who set her in the wrong way. She is flagged by the government and the commissar is sent to the school to watch over the teacher. The teacher informs the commissar about the woman they saw with their friend that fact she was looking to poison someone. Note is made as a child is brought back from the bomb shelter out of fear of the commissars presence. At home the poisoner sets up camp on the teachers neighbors house waiting for her.  The dino bear waves from across the street. When the teacher and the commissar get there the poisoner demands her money back. Stating that she was not sent the right way. When really the teacher didn't know the name of the shop and where it was. She points out all she said was she wanted to be around herbs. So she placed her around herbs in a  safe place. The poisoner is forced to succumb to reason. And is also told they are tagged a terrorist. A disembodied brain comes over to visit. He explains his form by drifting through someone's head. He is accused of having brain sex.  They drink they talk. They are explained in family relations. The two next door drunks sisters in their close bonds of secrecy. The brain a cousin. The commissar is a friend. The dinobear a freak show to some a brother or dad to the poisoner and the poisoner the family cat. Each taking a step on the ladder of the descent into the hell that will await them after this calm meeting.
In this i have hidden viewers that my character thinks of others in this game. I'll be reporting on the game from both a mix of lera’s point of view and my own but in one of these paragraphs i have hidden a  clue on things about my character’s way of thinking. At the same time i am mostly going to try and write it from her point of view now and then in the form of a dairy that i will be placing as i can slowly with each game play we have. Until next time lets just hope that two drunks don't trip down the stairs the dinobear don't knock a wall down the commissar doesn't kill anyone and the poisoner doesn't do themselves in by accident.

Bad Idea || Klaroline
So, this was a mix of a bunch of ideas that I just couldn't let go. Initially, it started with American Gods and the scene where Laura and Shadow first met, then it spiraled from there.
Caroline knows trouble when she sees it in the casino, and Klaus is nothing but trouble for her.
She knew he was trouble the second he sat at her table, with that cocky smirk on an unfairly attractive smile. He had come in on his own, eyes immediately latching on her blonde hair and sauntering over. Having worked at the casino for a good eight months, Caroline had learned to recognize bad news when she saw it, the kind that drew attention from the eyes in the sky. The owner was a slick son of a bitch who didn't hesitate to have his goons beat someone to a pulp.
Sometimes, they didn't even bother to accuse the sucker of cheating; if the win was big enough, it was far cheaper to bribe the hospital to quietly treat the bloody mess they dropped off with a warning not to mess with Damon Salvatore's profit margins.
With an easy charm and sharp eyes, though, Caroline would bet anything that the guy sitting across from her wasn't one to care for rules. He probably wouldn't cheat outright, male pride and all. Counting cards was more likely his game; stacking the odds in his favor without technically breaking the law.
Her lip curled at the thought of Damon breaking such a pretty face. "Are you sure this is the way to spend a Friday night?" she asked quietly while shuffling her cards. "D.C. has some better entertainment options than a seedy, underground casino."
He arched an eyebrow, taking a sip of his bourbon. "I've never met a dealer warning away a willing pile of chips," he noted with a shrewd once-over of her gaudy, gold-sequined vest. She tried not to react to the attention or the smooth British accent. "Caroline, is it?"
"You can put the flirt away." Giving an icy smile, Caroline winked at the plainclothes security sitting at the next table. "There are at least three men watching your every move right now, praying you give them the slightest excuse for violence if only to liven up their incredibly dull lives. One's right over your shoulder, examining my face for any sign of distress or suspicion."
Shrugging, the guy tossed back the rest of his drink. "That sounds more like a problem for me than for you. I'm touched you're so concerned."
"Right," she scoffed, making sure to keep her voice low, "like I won't be next on their hit list if you don't manage to lose half your chips." Dealing the cards quickly with her practiced hand, Caroline pinned him with an unimpressed glare. "Trust me, you don't want to cause trouble tonight. You're going to play this hand, maybe the next if you win, but then you're leaving."
His wicked smile cut dimples deep into his cheeks, and his tongue peeked out to wet his lips. "I do like a woman who takes charge," he murmured. "And you're beautiful, which means the house expects men to linger at the expense of their pockets. If I promise to lose, may I stay and keep you company?"
Rolling her eyes, Caroline flipped the cards with more force than necessary. "Be still, my heart," she deadpanned. "Look, buddy-
"Klaus," he offered.
"Look, Klaus," she snapped, "do what you want, but don't say I didn't warn you."
Coyly glancing at his cards, Klaus smirked. "So caring. What's a nice girl like you working in a place like this? Damon Salvatore's a bloody wanker on his best day."
"So are student loans. Hit or stay?"
He met her eyes with a playful glint. "Stay."
Straightening her posture, Caroline swallowed down a small grin. "And people think I'm stubborn. Dealer stays at nineteen, show your hand."
"Eighteen," he answered with a mournful cluck of the tongue. "I suppose I should try to recoup my loss."
Caroline just collected the cards to reshuffle. Never one to bear a silence, she couldn't stop her natural curiosity. "You know Damon, then? I always wonder how people find this place."
"Friends with his brother, actually," Klaus replied. He signaled to the passing waitress for another drink, a sure sign of his intent to get comfortable. "Stefan and I both did a semester at Oxford years back."
"Ex-boyfriend?"
"Nothing as official as all that," he winked. "Anyway, I'm in town for a few weeks, thought I should look up an old friend. We came together, but his brother stopped him for some urgent business, whatever that means."
Focusing on her shuffle tricks, Caroline's eyes narrowed. "It surprises me he mentioned this place," she said. "I thought he was the squeaky clean government worker. State Department, right?"
"I'd rather talk about you," he countered. "Your hopes, your dreams. Everything you want in life."
She let out a disbelieving laugh as she started the next deal. "God, does that line ever work on anyone?"
Klaus shrugged. "You tell me."
"I'm too smart to be seduced by you," she retorted. "Dealer has sixteen. Hit or stay?"
"Hit." His smile widened at the face card.
"Twenty-one," Caroline announced, moving his chips toward him. Her eyes darted over his shoulder, sweeping the rest of the floor. "Congratulations, sir. I suggest you cash out and enjoy your winnings elsewhere."
Looking at his meager pile of chips, Klaus's eyebrows fell in confusion. "I doubt the Salvatores care about losing fifty dollars."
"You're probably right," she said, "but they're not your biggest concern right now. You seem like a nice guy, if a little arrogant. It's a bad idea for you to stay much longer."
"I'm not that nice, love."
She let a dramatic shudder wrack her shoulders. "Ugh, that's just gross. Can you please just crawl back under whatever rock you came from? I don't want the extra paperwork."
"Paperwo-"
"Everybody FREEZE! FBI!"
Both their heads whipped to the crash of the front doors opening, people with guns and police badges barging into the casino. A waitress screamed as a tray dropped to the floor, and the security guys all drew their weapons on high alert.
Sighing, Caroline reached for his hand and pulled him around the table. "I'm sorry about this," she muttered before slipping a pair of handcuffs from her back pocket. "My name is Caroline Forbes, an agent with the FBI. You're not under arrest, the cuffs are just to make getting out a little easier. I'll take you in as a material witness, my bosses will especially want to hear about how involved Stefan Salvatore is in his brother's dealings."
To her surprise, Klaus chuckled in amusement. "Fair enough, sweetheart, I find I don't mind the idea of you restraining me. However, I should ask that you remove them before we step outside. For your sake more than mine."
"I've been deep undercover in a ruthless criminal organization to uncover ties to human trafficking," she explained with a snort. "My colleagues are everywhere, I'm the safest I've been in months. Why are you worried for my sake?"
As they reached the front doors of the casino, Klaus looked over his shoulder to smirk. "Because I have diplomatic immunity, and you'll likely cause an international incident by tying my name to this until and unless my status is revoked as a result. And it won't be, as a matter of experience."
Rearing back, Caroline turned him to face her fully. "What are you talking about?"
Klaus shrugged, somehow able to look nonchalant while in handcuffs. "It's notoriously difficult to charge a foreign prince with a crime of circumstance, love. If it makes you feel better, my brother has only gotten more insufferable since assuming the throne. He'll be sure to lecture me quite severely."
She was torn between disbelief and utter horror that her biggest case would be tainted if Klaus was telling the truth. "Trust," Caroline relented, releasing the cuffs. Still, she held a hand toward him. "But verify."
Clearly understanding her demand, he reached for his identification. "Klaus Mikaelson, heir in waiting until King Elijah can beget another. There are a few other titles in there, but that's the one people seem to care about."
Caroline squeezed her eyes shut, sheepishly handing it back. "Thanks for the warning, your highness. I guess I should apo-"
"No apologies, please," he said warmly. "But I'll let you make it up to me, with dinner."
Her mouth fell open in shock. "I- What?"
"I wasn't kidding about finding you beautiful." Klaus reached forward, brushing a blonde curl behind her ear. "And I was having fun before this excitement started. I'd like to continue our conversation, perhaps with new explanations, considering."
Shaking her head, Caroline couldn't tell if he was kidding. "This is a joke, right? You're just a con artist with a really good source for fake passports?"
"Would you like to talk to His Majesty?" he asked, pulling out his phone. "Maybe he'll save the lecture for skipping yet another meeting with your state officials if you convince him I'm an innocent bystander."
"No," she answered automatically. "Um, okay, I should get my boss. He'll want to handle your situation directly, and I really have to get back to work anyway."
Before she could leave, though, Klaus wrapped a hand around her wrist. "I'm happy to cooperate, Agent Forbes, and I'd very much like to see you again. Maybe after your boss is finished with his questions?"
"You just met me, and I arrested you," she pointed out.
He smirked. "Think of the story it makes."
Rolling her eyes, she turned away to find Agent Saltzman. Hopefully, her blush would lessen by the time she explained the freaking prince she left in the lobby. She would undoubtedly be too busy to watch his conversation with the boss, but she might be able to finish her initial debrief in time to take him up on his offer.
It wasn't every day a real life fairytale dropped at her feet, even if it's beginnings were less than magical.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.Today's interview is with Ruan Deyzel of Spoke Works cc, a brand that sells bicycle chain lubricant. Some stats:Product: Bicycle chain lubricant.Revenue/mo: $25,000Started: February 2008Location: PretoriaFounders: 1Employees: 5Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?Hi I’m Ruan Deyzel I started a business 11 years ago in the South African cycling industry that develops, manufactures and sells the SMOOVE Chain Lube and SMOOVE PREP chain cleaner. We have since grown and currently export to 15 countries selling SMOOVE products to discerning cyclist. We have grown 60% year on year over the last couple of years making us very excited and somewhat nervous in a good way for what the future holds! We are more determined than ever to work hard and to hold on for the ride!imageWhat's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?At the age of 11, my friend’s dad bought him a Diamondback Topanga Mountainbike this was about 1989 - I still vividly remember how amazing it was and how badly I wanted something like that.At the time, South Africa was still very much in the grip of the apartheid regime and due to the sanctions imposed by the rest of the world, most consumer goods were locally made.I started saving and made little business plans until I had enough money to buy myself an imported Mountain Bike. From that day on, my life has been revolving around two wheels. I worked in bike shops learning how to sell, work on bikes and how the inner workings of business work. The mechanical aspect of bicycles was what came most natural to me and the fascination of the technology in cycling kept me motivated to learn more. At the age of 28, I got married and not long after that my wife was expecting our first child, at the time I was the manager of a big Bicycle store.Working in retail wasn't paying much, I just wasn't earning enough money to support my wife and child, just having a basic lifestyle was making us get further into debt with every month that went by. I started building high-quality bicycle wheels at night after work in our little apartment under the staircase to boost our income and after a few months doing endless calculations I told my wife that I think I can manage to make up my salary building wheels and servicing suspension forks.I saw a small gap in the market at the time and that is how Spoke Works was born, we serviced Suspension for all the other bicycle stores around us and quickly built a great reputation for building some of the best wheels in South Africa. We made some money but I realized that our income was limited by my two hands and the number of hours in a day, it was very hard to scale the current business model we had!I’m a tinkerer and maker, always trying to fix things that are broken and to improve things that frustrate me. One of those things was chain lube, a small but very frustrating part of riding a bicycle. You often have to choose between using a lubricant that causes a black sticky mess on your chain leaving marks on your legs (rookie tattoo’s) or a cleaner alternative that you have to reapply during the ride because it won't last more than 30km’s. Nothing out there could do both, keep everything clean while giving great durability.I started bouncing the idea of some people and most of them told me that there are way to many chain lubes on the market, I knew this from the days that I was involved in retail. There are just some products like supplements, chain lubes and bike wash that you see a new brand all the time due to little barrier to entry, they all tell the same story and offer the same performance. I knew that I really had to solve a problem worth solving and a problem that is not just my own but that its common enough that everybody riding a bike will be relieved by the performance that my product offers. I knew that It had to be good enough to instantly create the wow factor with anybody that gave it a try to stand out and be taken serious.imageTake us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.I came up with a set of fundamental specifications that I wanted to achieve based on what the issues where of all the other lubricants on the market, my father always told me to aim high! When I told one of my best friends what I felt my chain lube had to be able to achieve I vividly remembered him letting out a cuss word and starting to laugh telling me that it's impossible for a chain lube to do all that. Right there I knew that I was aiming high enough!I started mixings ingredients together in my garage testing them on our morning rides getting feedback from my wife, trying different combinations until I thought I had something that was good enough to give to more people to test.I chose about 40 test riders from all walks of life over all cycling disciplines, I chose people that didn't know each other so that they couldn't influence each other's opinions, I made coded samples and gave each person a set of little bottles and a questionnaire to complete with each round of testing. To be honest I gave up a few times, but luckily my wife encouraged me to keep going! The feedback from the test riders kept me very humble, if the sample was bad 30 people told me so, I kept on making small improvements until I managed to not just achieve the performance specifications that I set out to do but in many cases improve on them by a healthy margin! While this was going on we were still running our wheel building and suspension servicing business to keep food on the table! The next step was to come up with a brand and packaging. I have always been a big fan of good packaging and striking simple well defined brands. There is something that just makes a swiss chocolate taste better when it's packaged beautifully, I wanted some of that for my own product we spent a good part of the next 2 years working part time with some amazing creative people to come up with SMOOVE and the whole visual language around it.Consumer buyer behavior is a science and I knew I had one chance to nail it. We didn't have money to pay for all this and somehow scraped it together to pay for it using very creative ways , credit cards, small bank overdrafts but to name a few.I’m a firm believer to start with the end in mind, so as far as I could plan ahead I tried to set things up that I will be able to scale it with as little money as possible and one day be the number one selling chain lube in the world. I went to the best packaging companies and with some persuasion convinced them to lower their minimum order quantities to levels that I could manage with the funds that I had available. I came up with simple manufacturing methods that I could give some people jobs with and that was easy to scale up when I had to with little effort and money. Some of them worked well and others we had to change as the demand and our experience grew.imageThis was our first bottle and box we made using a live stock dosing pump. It gave Tony a great right hand forearm but was way to slow!imageWith almost everything in place at this time I knew it was time to start finding a way of protecting our brand and product against copying, to be honest it was a bit scary because I know very little about the legal stuff and I have heard some horror stories about how quickly legal costs can escalate.I ended up with a South African law firm Spoor & Fisher, they specialize in patents and trademarks. They were absolutely wonderful and gave me advice that was most helpful to my brand and product and most importantly help that I would be able to afford. They were very accommodating over the next few years with payments. I guess the most important thing was that I did what I said I was going to do and they trusted me for that.Describe the process of launching the business.I always tell myself that I cannot just sit in my office hoping for business to come my way, I think it's human nature to come up with little excuses why it's not a great time to go see that new customer, area of the country or new country. The best thing is to get in the car or in the airplane face your fears and make it happen! I still remember it very well, it was a rainy Monday morning I took our first 6 boxes of SMOOVE that we made and drove to the closest bicycle dealer an hour later I had my first order and at the end of they day I had managed to sell the 6 boxes I had with me in the car. I kept on doing that until I covered all 300 bicycle dealers that we have in South Africa.A big part of our income was spent on having a good online presence that looked professional with a clear message. I managed to set up a deal with a company called Dieselbrook brand consulting, they take care of all our online needs including design work and copywriting. It's super important to us to always look great and have a well thought out strategic online presence with everything we do.I guess we were kind of lucky with the type of business and product that we have, we didn't need a huge amount of capital to get it going, I think without realizing it, I was always looking for something that will suit my appetite for risk and exposure. I have always been more comfortable with smaller risks rather than making or losing it all in one go. We kept on trading and reinvesting small amounts of our own money in growing the business. Most of our capital came from an overdraft facility that we have with our bank, it was the cheapest interest rate and easiest to acquire and the numbers worked for us.Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?I believe that growing too fast can be detrimental to your business especially if you are going to do your own manufacturing and fund your own growth like in our case.I don't know what the exact number is but about 50% growth year on year is already posing enough of a challenge. We have actively made the decision to grow SMOOVE as organic as possible using the old school word of mouth approach, of course, it's possible to supercharge this with social media using authentic lifestyle post that hopefully inspire people to get on their bikes and ride.Being a wholesale manufacturer we have found that the big online type stores like amazon and also the distributors that have adopted a B2B only approach without any sales reps are really bad at setting new trends. We need good people to tell the dealers about our products and the benefits of our products and at the same time need good bicycle dealers to actively sell to the end consumer. This is probably considered an old school approach but after much trial and error we have found that it works best for us.How are you doing today and what does the future look like?Since we launched SMOOVE we have closed down all other activities that we started the business on to solely focus on the manufacturing and distribution of SMOOVE products its so easy for us to dilute our resources and lose focus. We have been able to secure distributors in about 15 countries and have been in negotiations with half a dozen new distributors in countries around the world. It's always hard to find the right fit so a lot of it is done on gut feel trying to get like minded companies that are willing to put in the hard work with us to grow our business. We have been steadily ramping up production with the production methods that we learnt over the last few years always making sure that our input costs stay in control to make it profitable for every body in the supply chain including ourselves.Every new distributor that we add to the list have to start from scratch in their own country, it takes time to establish a new product in any market but we have found that a lot of what worked in the South African market can be applied to other markets with great success. In the short term we want to grow our list of countries from 15 to 30 and also be able to cope with the demand in terms of our manufacturing capacity and in the long term we want to be one of the top selling chain lube brands in the world using this distribution platform to launch and distribute more products carrying the SMOOVE logo. Its very important to us to only add products that have the same quality and performance that SMOOVE is known for.imageA* Sea Otter classic in California showing our products for the first time in the USA.*imageShowing Smoove to Brazil in São PauloThrough starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous? The last 11 years have been a very steep learning curve for me, I have learned a lot about myself about what I'm really bad at doing and what i’m really good with.I have learned how to deal with the frustration of having to do lots of tasks that are not in my sweet spots like admin and bookkeeping but at the same time learning everything about what makes my business tick and understanding things better that make us lose money or be profitable.I have learned the value of having my wife as my most trusted partner helping me build this business from the ground up trusting her to take the burden of dealing with the books and finances of my shoulders so that I can have the freedom to lead the business to success. I have learned how to find the elusive work-life balance to have the time to invest in my children and my marriage.I have learned how to be patient, how to wait for things that are worthwhile and how to roll with the punches. I have learned how to be resourceful with very little at hand and to always have a plan to get us to the next month end. I guess the stress that goes with all of that becomes a way of life and after a few years you are addicted to it in some way or the other. There is always some luck in business being there at the right time with the right product, but I also believe that we have been very blessed over the last 11 years and that we are merely clay in the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ. What platform/tools do you use for your business? Some of my most favorite tools in our business is WooCommerce we use it for our B2B site and it integrates seamlessly with Sage Accounting our bookkeeping platform. Our B2B site almost immediately took a lot of work of my shoulders automating the whole ordering and payment process. What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?By far the most influential book that I have read was Shoe Dog by Phill Knight the founder of Nike.I felt a very big relive reading about his early struggles with multi-tasking, raising capital and cash flow problems.I think that business owners can often feel isolated and alone facing the problems they have and reading about great companies like Nike and that they went through exactly the same issues really makes it better!I also often listen to podcasts by Guy Raz called how I built this for pretty much the same reason while driving or riding my bike.Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?I would say that some of the best advice that I can give any aspiring entrepreneur is to start with the end in mind. Always try to think what the effect of your current decision will be 5 or 10 years from now. It's often a few small wrong decisions that eventually catch up to you.Get started!! I think people often plan and strategize too much while you sometimes just have to get your head stuck in and get going. You will very soon find out where you have to make changes and where the opportunities are.Be honourable, I always thought that South Africa is a small place and that you have to look after your name over here but have realized that in any industry with the way that information travels the world is a small place! Make sure that every business dealing is ethical and honorable no matter how big or small!Where can we go to learn more?www.smoovelube.comhttps://www.instagram.com/smoovelube/https://www.facebook.com/Smoovelube/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo9e89eZsYNQgvjost8zOtwLiked this text interview? Forgive and Forget
Tagging: Finn, Rachel & Family Location: Hospital Notes: Finn’s summer takes an unexpected turn to the disappointment of his friends and family.
Finn knew that the summer was going to be his real test when it came to staying sober. Being away from Rachel was going to be his real test whether he liked it or not and he knew that much. The second he moved back into his dad's house, his dad had helped him find a job at a local restaurant. He was just a busboy but he figured it was a good enough place to start saving money for the apartment that him and Rachel would be moving into when they got back to Austin. His summer started off fairly boring, for the most part. He worked, came home and hung out with his dad and then talked on the phone or Facetimed Rachel. Somehow he had fallen into a routine again and while he wasn't exactly happy, he was getting by. It was a few weeks into the summer that he woke up and found himself texting some old friends that he shouldn't. They were old friends from high school he had partied with tons of time in the past and when they invited him out to a party, he decided to go. He had been sober for almost two months and he figured he could handle it at this point. What started as a fairly laid back party erupted into a house filled with people and as Finn sat on the couch beside his friend gripping onto his half-empty drink, he watched as a few people in front of him laid out lines of coke on the table. He watched them as they snorted the lines, his eyes fixated on the white powder as he felt his entire body practically screaming at him to do it. And as if he was having an out of body experience - he did. Finn found himself doing line after line throughout the night before somewhere along the way he ended up at the house of his dealer. God, he was weak and he knew he was but he needed the high. He needed to feel good and the second he was shooting up again, he felt like everything was right. God, why did he stop in the first place? He used sparingly for a couple of weeks before he found himself itching for more. Since he had a little money in his pocket, he bought himself coke and heroin and he found himself eager to mix the two together again. Once he was alone in his room he prepped the heroin and laid out a few lines of coke, snorting them before he injected the heroin into his veins. Immediately he could feel something wasn't right as he laid back on the bed. His heart was racing in his chest as he struggled to breath, him staring up at the ceiling helplessly before everything went black. A groan escaped his lips as his eyes fluttered open and when he realized that he was in a hospital, Finn's eyes shot open. "He's twenty years old, Carole. Almost twenty-one. As much as I want him to go to rehab, he has to do it himself. He has to get clean for himself." Finn could hear his parents just outside the room and he closed his eyes as he felt them fill with tears. "So then maybe he should stay with me. You clearly don't know what you're doing. He almost died in your fucking house Christopher. What if you hadn't gotten back from work early?" A shaky breath escaped his lips as he listened to his parents argue and he knew that he had royally fucked up. Again. He felt helpless as he thought about what would happen next and when he thought about Rachel, he felt a few tears fall down his cheek. She was going to hate him. He had lied to her for weeks and he knew that she would never trust him again after this if she even bothered to show up to see him. He knew he didn't deserve her to.
Rachel felt like she was dreaming the second she got a call about Finn. She really had no idea what to do. The first thing she did was cry -- they had made so much progress and she didn't know what to do. All of that progress was gone. She felt miserable and she knew that in reality, she wasn't even involved. It felt like everything was spinning and she did the only thing that she felt like she could. She talked to her mom and honestly, she didn't even think that she was making words. However, by some kind of miracle, her mom understood and she was already in the car speeding down the highway before Rachel even registered that they were leaving. Rachel felt like she was in shock, honestly. This was something that she never expected and never was prepared for. It obviously had crossed her mind that this was a possibility but it didn't mean that she had prepared herself for anything like this. Never. They quickly drove to the hospital and Rachel felt like she was numb and having a completely out of body experience. A part of her never even realized that she was walking, but soon enough, they were walking in on his parents fighting. God, she couldn't believe this. When they saw her walk up, she heard them fall silent, just keeping her eyes on theirs. "Can I see him? Please? Is he.... is he okay? He's awake right?" She could see his mom simply look away after a moment and Rachel swore she could feel her blood boil. His father nodded towards the door and Rachel slipped in before anyone could tell her no. She shut the door behind her and she looked at the bed, her eyes already welling with tears at the sight of him. "Are you okay?" She choked out, partially afraid to walk up to him just for her own sanity. "I- I got a call from... from your dad and I came here. My uhm... my parents are here." It obviously meant that her dad knew, but she couldn't sense that he was mad that she was with him. He just wanted her safe and happy. "Please tell me that you're okay. I- I just need to know. You scared the fuck out of me, do you know that? I feel like I haven't been breathing for the last hour."
Finn had fucked up so badly and he felt horrible that he was hurting everyone in his life so horribly. He knew his dad felt helpless and responsible for his overdose while his mom was just frustrated about the situation in general. He was making everyone's life miserable and a part of him wished that his father hadn't gotten home from work early so that everything could just be over. When the door opened up, Finn expected to see his parents but when he saw Rachel slip into the room, he felt his heart leap into his throat. A shaky breath escaped his lips as his eyes met hers and he immediately felt guilt pile up heavily on his shoulders. "I'm okay," he breathed out shakily even though he knew he wasn't okay. He knew none of this was okay. When she told him that her parents were there as well, he felt his heart break in his chest. There was no hiding this or the severity of this from her parents anymore, he figured. And it was all his own fault. "I'm sorry, Rach," he told her, him clenching his jaw as he felt his eyes well up with tears again. "I'm sorry." Finn shifted slightly in the bed, moving to sit up ever so slightly as he avoided her gaze. "I just - I don't even know what happened," he breathed out. "I - I just woke up. I haven't - I haven't spoken to anyone. I just heard my - my parents fighting." He felt his voice shaking as he tried to hold himself together and he knew there was that part of him that just wanted to get high to make all these feelings go away. "I'm sorry I fucked up," he whispered. "I fucked up at a party a couple weeks ago and I... I didn't know how to tell you. I'm... I'm so sorry," he told her before a few tears fell down his cheeks. "Everyone is gonna hate me," he cried softly as he put his head in his hands, knowing that him relapsing so severely was going to cause him to lose the trust he had been trying so hard to win back.
Rachel couldn't believe this. She couldn't believe that this had really happened. That Finn was in the hospital. She felt like just yesterday, he had been fine. But apparently, like a lot of stuff, that had also been a lie. She was tired of this, really. Every day she woke up and worried even if Finn told her not to, but it wasn't like she could just flip a switch and turn it off. She'd never be able to. She heard him apologize, she heard him try to make sense of this and to get his bearings, but she felt like she couldn't even hear him. She didn't want to hear him, at this point. "You don't even know what happened?" She said, her voice slightly emotionless. "You overdosed. You almost died. So now you're in the hospital." She didn't want to be mean, but she couldn't exactly help herself. She was so upset -- so disappointed. "I don't want your... your sorry, Finn. I- I can't believe you. You lied to me. Again. You never told me you started using again. I just-" She stopped, her rubbing her hands over her face. "People aren't going to hate you. But everyone is... is disappointed. How could they not? You're ruining your life, don't you get that? How can you act like this?" Honestly, she just wanted to understand but she knew that Finn wasn't going to have a good answer. How could he? "How can you just.... keep doing this? You're ruining everything, Finn. Everything. We had a plan. And now you- you have to start at square one all over again." There wasn't a clue in her mind how she'd deal with doing this all over again and a part of her really didn't want to. But how could she just walk away like this was nothing? "I thought you were fine, Finn. I thought you were getting better."
Finn looked at Rachel brokenly when she spoke. He could hear the disappointment in her voice and he wouldn't be surprised if this was it for her. He wouldn't be surprised if she left him. She had given him so many chances and he let her down at every opportunity he got. When she told him that she didn't want his sorry, he simply nodded as he stared at the little machine that was beeping in time with his heartbeat. He could feel the tears that were falling down his cheeks but he figured it was useless to try and wipe them away at this point. "I didn't want to lie to you," he breathed out. "I just - I didn't know how to tell you," he told her, his voice shaking slightly. He had been terrified for her to find out and yet she had in the worst way possible. "I know I ruined everything," he whispered. He held himself back from saying sorry again because he knew she was just going to tell him to stop. That it didn't matter. And he knew she was right. He could tell her sorry over and over again but it would never be the same as him actually making a change in himself. "I thought I was getting better too. I - I thought I could handle being at a party but then there were... there were people doing coke and I just - I fucked up. I fucked up and then I just wanted to keep going." Finn looked down sadly and shook his head, him sighing sadly before he shifted his gaze back up to meet hers. "If you want to break up with me, I understand," he told her. "I don't deserve you." Finn wrung his hands together before he looked back up at her brokenly and he knew that he really had pushed away the one person in his life who made him better in every way.
Rachel hated everything that was happening. She hated that things had gotten to the point that they did, especially because there was really no way that he could be the Finn that she had fallen so deeply in love with right now. Of course, he was still the same Finn -- she'd love him forever and she would always want him, but seeing him in a hospital bed like this? She felt like she was looking at a stranger. "Finn, you- you avoided parties because you weren't ready. You shouldn't have gone. I know you want to live your life but if you weren't ready you shouldn't have pushed yourself. Do you know how shitty it'll be to go through everything all over again? I-" She ran a hand through her hair, breathing out shakily. The second me mentioned breaking up, she looked at him and she stayed silent for a moment. She really didn't know what to say. A part of her felt like she should -- she couldn't do this for the rest of her life. But how could she just leave him when he needed her? When she needed him? "Finn, stop." She said softly before moving closer to him and moving to wrap her arms around him tightly to hug herself close to him. "I'm so disappointed in you. More than I've ever been. But I- it doesn't mean that I don't love you," She said softly against him before pulling away and looking down at him before moving a hand to wipe her thumb over his cheeks to wipe away the wetness there. "I'm here for you. You know that. But this... this happening? God, I thought I was having a heart attack. You can't put me through this again. I love you, Finn. I do. But I- I can't be living in fear all of the time. I thought we got around that, you know? I thought things were better."
Finn knew that getting clean again would be hell. Going through withdrawals again would be hell. A part of him hated himself because he knew all he was doing was hurting himself and every single person around him. When she told him to stop, he looked up at her with sadness in his gaze and when she moved closer to him, he couldn't help but feel confused. Just hearing her say that she was disappointed in him broke his heart but her telling him that she still loved him caused him to look at her with slight shock in his expression. "I don't deserve you to love me the way you do," he breathed out as she pulled away from him slightly to wipe away the tears on his cheeks. "I really am sorry, Rachel," he told her, his voice shaking slightly. "I didn't want to hurt you. I - I kept telling myself that it was just a slip up and that I'd stop and then I just - I didn't. I got worse and then I just - I did coke and heroin at the same time I felt like I couldn't breathe. And then I just - I woke up here," he told her. Before he could say anything else, his mom and dad walked into the room and he immediately felt even more guilty by the looks on their faces. God, this was the most he had seen them together in years and it was all because he was a fucking wreck. "Thank god you're okay, my baby," his mom cried softly as she hurried over to him, leaning down to hug him tightly before she pressed a kiss to his forehead. "You're going to come stay with me after all of this, okay?" she told him as she looked down at him sadly. "If he stays with you, you'll just make it worse, Carole. He's going to rehab," his dad interjected. "You... you can't do that to me again, Finn. If I hadn't gotten back from work when I did you'd be... you'd be..." his dad's voice trailed off and Finn looked between both of his parents sadly. "I'd be dead. I - I know and I - I'm sorry. I just - I don't know what to do," he said softly. "I don't want to go to rehab," he told his dad as he looked up at the older man before he looked over to Rachel. He felt like that little kid caught between two arguing parents again and he knew he just wanted to figure out what to do so that he could get better and just feel safe again.
Rachel felt like shit. She honestly couldn't believe that they were in the situation that they were in, but she was trying to be understanding even if she wanted to scream at him until there was no tomorrow. "I know you're sorry. I just- you should have called me. You should have told me everything and you didn't. We promised each other that we'd be... honest. And you promised me that you were going to stay clean." Obviously, he had tried. But he clearly didn't try hard enough -- and that was what hurt her. Rachel pulled away slightly from Finn as his parents walked in, but she stayed close to his bedside. His parents could be a lot -- she really didn't like his mom but she was trying to be nice and respectful to her no matter what. As he looked to her, she felt her heart race. God, why did she need to get involved? "You two can't force him to do anything. You know he'll just resent you for it." And there she was. Getting involved. She saw her parents walk in and keep off to the side, clearly not wanting to get involved but wanting to show their support. "I've tried. I've tried to get him to rehab and he won't do it. He was getting clean with me. We had a routine. We had milestones. I'll just... I'll let him stay with me again. I- I don't care." She could practically feel her mom looking at her but she didn't care. This was Finn, she had to do something -- she couldn't let his mom and dad stress him out for no reason at all. "He got himself clean and he stayed clean for a long time because I- I was there for him. I tried to help him. He just needs someone. I can help him. I know I'm not a rehab but I- I understand him. I've been there for him and I... I can still be there for him. You just need to let him do what he wants. That's what he needs."
Finn was overwhelmed in a way he had never been before and despite the arguing all around him, all he wanted to do was get high again. He didn't want to feel like this, he just wanted to feel good and he hated that he was bringing so much pressure onto the shoulders of all the people who loved him. God, why couldn't he have just died? When Rachel interrupted his parents, he looked at her with wide eyes. "Rachel that's not fair to you or your family. You can't make him get clean. If we let him do what he wants, in an hour he'll be back out there buying drugs whether you want to believe that or not. And I'm sorry but if you think him being clean for a couple of months was a long time, it's not. Rehab is the only option," Chris said, causing the anxiety Finn was feeling to rise even more as he looked at his dad. He felt even worse that Rachel's parents were seeing all of this and he knew there was no way in hell they'd want him anywhere near their daughter after this. "We can talk about rehab when he feels less pressured, Chris. He should stay with me because we all know you're not going to let him stay with you now." As his parents started arguing once again about what way was better to deal with him and where he'd be going after this, Finn felt himself starting to panic. "I - it doesn't matter where I go," he said, his voice shaking. "I don't want to go with anyone. I'll just - I'll figure it out." Finn grabbed his IV and yanked it out of his arm, pulling the heart monitor off him as well before he started to move out of the bed. He just sat up before his dad gripped his shoulders and forced him back on the bed, Finn trying to push against him before he gave up and laid down. "What the fuck is wrong with you? Why are you doing this to yourself?" his dad said loudly, his fathers eyes filled with tears as he looked at him before the older man shook his head and left the room. Finn sat there with silent tears falling down his face as he looked around at everyone who just seemed to be wearing matching expressions of disappointment. "I'm sorry," he breathed out, not talking to anyone in particular as he looked down at the bed, knowing that he just wanted to disappear.
Rachel really couldn't believe that this was happening. She wanted to disappear -- really, she wanted to disappear with Finn and forget any of this had happened. She wanted to pretend that everything was fine adn that they'd never have anymore problems. There wasn't any single part of her that wanted to fight with his parents, especially because she wanted them to continue to like her. Or well, his dad liked her at least, and that was what she wanted to keep. She wanted to speak up, she really did, but she felt like her voice was caught in her throat. "Finn, stop-" She said, seeing him pull his IV out of his arm and starting to get out of the bed. "Babe, I-" She felt like her heart was racing in her chest and she really felt helpless. What was she supposed to do here? It felt like she was so out of control of the situation and there was nothing that she could do to change things. "Listen, we can take him in." Her mom started, Rachel immediately looking over to her. "Mom-" "We have extra space and we all know that Rachel's been the one helping him to get clean in the first place. He'll stay with us during the summer and then he'll live his normal life. If he wants rehab, there's a very nice rehab in our town that's shown amazing results. Plus, it's the least we can do. He's an adult -- they both are. We need to let them make their decisions." Rachel was staring at her, trying to make words but failing. "W-what?" She whispered, mostly to herself, attempting to wrap her head around the situation. "It's up to you, Finn. Really, everything is up to you. We want to help you. And I damn well know that Rachel does, too."
Finn had almost forgotten that Rachel's parents were in the room until Rachel's mom spoke up, him looking at Shelby in slight shock when she offered to have him stay with them. His mouth opened and closed a few times as he struggled to think of what to say before he heard his mom sigh loudly as she looked at him. "Maybe that would be the best thing." Finn's eyes widened as he looked at his mother, shocked that she would think any idea was better than him staying with her since she had seemed so insistent. "You don't want to stay with me. Your father won't let you stay with him unless you go to rehab. I just - I just want you to be okay, Finn. I just want you to be happy. And you were happy when I saw you last time even if your visit with me didn't go so well." Carole managed a small smile and for the first time in what felt like a long time, he could actually see that his mom cared and that his mom was broken up by the whole situation. "I um... I'd like to stay with you guys," he said softly as he looked up at Rachel's parents, him offering them a small smile. "I just - I don't want to be a burden on you. Or Rachel. I just... no one was supposed to know about this. I was supposed to get it under control myself," he breathed out. "And I obviously want it to be okay with you. I'm not going if it's not okay with you," he told Rachel, him looking at his girlfriend nervously. He knew his addiction was overwhelming for her and while she put on a brave face most of the time, he knew it took his toll on her. The last thing he wanted to do was put her through all of that all over again.
Rachel had no idea what to say to her mom. This was something that she never thought her mom would ever really suggest. Sure, her mom was understanding and she'd understood what was going on with Finn and his life because Rachel had told her some of the details. And well, she'd seen him when he was going through withdrawals right in her bedroom, but Rachel didn't think that her mom would offer something like this. Of course, Rachel appreciated it -- more than her mom new, she was sure. Finn's words were almost like a blur in her mind. She took a minute to process everything before she looked over at him, feeling her heart racing in her chest. "Yeah, of course it's okay." She was terrified to watch him get clean again. She was terrified to watch all of this unfold all over again and god, all she wanted was for him to get clean. To live a normal life and just realize that he could be happy without any kind of substance. "It's okay. I- I just want you to be healthy, I don't care where that is. If it's with me? Then.... then I want you with me. If that's what you want, I want it too. I just- I really need you to try, Finn. I can't... I can't have you come with us and not try. I just need you to make sure you're working on you because I don't know what I'm going to do if this happens all over again and I have to see you in a hospital bed or.... or worse."
Finn was happy that he would get to stay with Rachel but he was just as nervous about the decision as well. He was scared to go through withdrawals and feel incredibly vulnerable not only in front of her, but in front of her parents as well. He didn't know why they cared about him so much, why they weren't pushing him away from their daughter but he was grateful for them. So grateful. "I - I'm gonna try, I promise," he told Rachel as he looked into her eyes. "I won't let this happen again. I - slipped up but I promise that I'm not gonna slip up again." Finn knew that what he was promising was a lot, especially since it hadn't taken him long after being away from her to relapse. However, he was going to try his best to be the guy that she needed and the guy she needed had to be sober. He had to be sober if he was ever going to have a future with her. Finn knew she would only be able to take so much more and he really didn't want to fuck everything up because he couldn't get himself together. "I'm gonna be better this time, I promise, Rach," he told her, him offering her a small smile. "And I - thank you guys," he said as he shifted his attention to her parents. "Most people would be pushing me away so it um... it means a lot that you want to help me."

YOU GUYS I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS
But those aren't the only reasons parents don't want their kids using. But this is, strictly speaking, impossible. Some say Europeans are less energetic, but I don't believe it.1 If they aren't an X, and the right mood. In those days, you will be net more productive. Foreseeing disaster, my friend Robert Morris and Trevor Blackwell.2 You write programs in the parse trees that get generated within the compiler when other languages are parsed. Don't be hapless is not much point.3 Maybe mostly in one hub.
What should they do research on?4 And if you think about it, cuteness is helplessness. We chose Lisp. Though she'd heard a lot about YC since the beginning, the last 9 months have been a lot of room for improvement here.5 It doesn't even have y. How sterile it was. It's not just the mob you need to learn to judge by outward signs which will be worth your time.
I wanted to keep it that way.6 It's often mistakenly believed that medieval universities were mostly seminaries. I recommend is to take yourself out of the woodwork every month or so. But we should understand the price. Subtract one from the other, and the result is what we can't say. In painting, for example, will cheerfully work 20-hour days to produce the Apple computer for a society that allows them, after taxes, to keep just enough of their income to match what they would have made working 9 to 5 at a big company. It's good to have a few trusted friends you can speak openly to.
But because they have to.7 America's competitiveness often suggest spending more on public schools.8 Tax laws that encourage growth? I must have explained something badly. If someone who had to process payments before Stripe had tried asking that, Stripe would have been one of the heavy school record players and played James Taylor's You've Got a Friend to us. Gradually it will re-emerge. The truth is common property.9 So I'm really glad I stopped to think about which one to use. For example, can this quality be taught? I'm saying that he'll make you a better writer in languages you do want to use it in all his paintings, wouldn't he?10
And what, exactly, is hate speech?11 The idea of mixing it up with linkbait journalists or Twitter trolls would seem to her not merely frightening, but disgusting. Cadillac stopped being the Cadillac of cars in about 1970. If you want to encourage startups: read the stories of the Bible could not be true. Performance isn't everything, you say? This is too big a problem to solve here, but certainly one reason life sucks at 15 is that kids are trapped in a world designed for 10 year olds. But America has no monopoly on this. But, at least, taking money from a top firm would generally be a bargain. First Round that they performed one. Aikido for Startups But I don't know; but whatever your capacities, there are projects that stretch them. I don't like the idea of being mistaken.
So if Lisp makes you a better writer in languages you do want to use Lisp, so much the better.12 John McCarthy invented Lisp, the field of or at least of the good ones, is precisely that: look for places where conventional wisdom is broken, and then try to pry apart the cracks and see what's underneath. Evelyn Waugh called him a great writer, but to serve a ruler powerful enough to ignore the local feudal lords. That's schlep blindness. The more of an IT flavor the job descriptions had, the less dangerous the company was. Exceptional programmers have an aptitude for and interest in programming that is not merely determined, but flexible as well.13 Indians in the current Silicon Valley. What counts as pornography and violence? It is by no means a lost cause trying to create a silicon valley in another country. Let's run through an example. Everything else on their site may be stock photos or the prose equivalent, but might it also be true? It The second reason we tend to find great disparities of wealth alarming is that for most of human history the usual way to accumulate a fortune was to steal it, we tend to be suspicious of rich people.14
It means a tedious, unpleasant task.15 It may be just luck, but I've saved myself from a few technologies that turned out to be a mecca for smart people simply by having an immigration system that let them in. It won't get you a job is that no one speaks it. That's not enough to consider your mind a blank slate. This idea along with the PhD, the department, and indeed the whole concept of the modern university was imported from Germany in the 1930s—or among the Mongols in 1200, for that matter? For example, by doing things that you not only didn't know, but that contradict things you thought you knew.16 In England in the 1060s, when William the Conqueror distributed the estates of the defeated Anglo-Saxon nobles to his followers, the conflict was military. When she turned to see what had happened, she found the steps were all different heights. Which means, oddly enough, that as you grow older, life should become more and more users. The Daddy Model of Wealth When I was a whiz at it. It could be that a language promoted by one big company to undermine another, designed by a committee for a mainstream audience, hyped to the skies, and beloved of the DoD, happens nonetheless to be a lot of other things fell into place. My grandmother told us an edited version of the death of my grandfather.

It's also one of the most dramatic departure from his predecessors was a kind of people. It seems to pass. Or worse still, as I know of no Jews moving there, and yet give away free subscriptions with such tricks, you'd get ten times as productive as those working for large settlements earlier, but it wasn't.
I know what kind of gestures you use the word wealth, seniority will become as big as any successful startup founders and investors are interested in each type of thinking. Price discrimination is so hard to measure how dependent you've become on distractions, try this thought experiment: If you want to get endless grief for classifying religion as a cause for optimism: American graduates have more money chasing the same thing twice.

In practice most successful startups of all tend to notice when it's their own interests. Many people feel good. I'm going to create a great one.

The late 1960s were famous for social upheaval. It's conceivable that the payoff for avoiding tax grows hyperexponentially x/1-x for 0 x 1.
Strictly speaking it's impossible to succeed in business are likely to have to preserve optionality. What happens in practice is that most people, but that's the intellectually honest argument for not discriminating between various types of startup: Watch people who should quit their day job writing software. It would be much bigger news, in the sense of being Turing equivalent, but delusion strikes a step later in the US since the war, federal tax receipts have stayed close to the option pool.
In high school. And in World War II to the hour Google was founded, wouldn't offer to be told what to think of it, by encouraging them to private schools that in effect hack the college admissions. Which in turn is why I haven't released Arc.
Note to nerds: or possibly a lattice, narrowing toward the top 15 tokens, because a she is very common for the linguist and presumably teacher Daphnis, but something feminists need to warn readers about, just that they probably don't notice even when I first met him, but they were actually getting physically taller. Even now it's hard to avoid this problem by having a gentlemen's agreement with the New Deal was a sort of stepping back is one of a powerful syndicate, you better be sure you do if your goal is to say about these: I wouldn't bet against it either. That is the case, companies' market caps will end up reproducing some of the world, and stir.
A more accurate metaphor would be a good grade you had small children pointed out by Mitch Kapor, is due to Trevor Blackwell reminds you to two more modules, an image generator written in Lisp, they did not start to go deeper into the sciences, even in their IPO filing. You should always absolutely refuse to give up, and intelligence can help founders is by calibrating their ambitions, because any story that makes curators and dealers use neutral-sounding nonsense seems to have a quality that feels a bit. Indifference, mainly. Brooks, Rodney, Programming in Common Lisp, they have to do this right you'd have to sweat whether startups have some revenues before 18 months are out.
The amusing thing is, obviously, only Jews would move there, only Jews would move there, only for startups overall. Programming languages should be your compass. Which is not Apple's products but their policies. But core of the rest generate mediocre returns, but those are writeoffs from the Ordinatio of Duns Scotus ca.
Common Lisp for, but the number of startups as they are at selling it. Most employee agreements say that YC's most successful startups looked when they buy some startups and not least, the mean annual wage in the 1980s was enabled by a sense of being harsh to founders is how much he liked his work.
But you can't dictate the problem is poverty, not how much you're raising, have several more meetings with you to acknowledge as well use the word wisdom in so many had been trained that anything hung on a scale that has raised a million dollars. It doesn't end every semester like classes do. Instead of the world, and are paid a flat rate regardless of how to value valuable things. When you get nothing.

MAKING LSD
------ --- Common LSD, being of the strangest drugs, available to people on the black market, is not too hard to make in your average run-of-the-mill kitchen. LSD (Lysergic acid Diethylamide) is a complex organic mixure that gives some people (most) a trip to the moon or other nearby celestial body. ITEMS NEEDED: ----- ------ 1-About 200-250 grams of MORNING GLORY SEEDS or BAY HAWAIIAN WOOD ROSE SEEDS. The Morning Glory seeds can be obtained at most plant nurseries. 2-200 cc. of petroleum ether 3-Small piece of window screen or a strainer 4-A couple of large glasses 5-cookie tray (an old one, never to be used again) 6-260 cc. of wood alcohol (call your local drug store). 7-Capsule containers (jel) ========================================================================= Let's get started: 1. Grind up about 170 grams of Morning Glory Seeds. 2. In 145 cc. of petroleum ether, soak the seeds for two or three days. 3. With screen, filter the liquid thru it and save the seed mush and allow it to dry completely. 4. Let the mush soak in 130 cc. of wood alcohol. 5. Filter solution again only. Save the liquid in a large glass jar. 6. Soak the seed mush again in 130 cc. of wood alcohol for two more days. 7. Filter out the mush and keep the liquid. Now, get the liquid that was saved in step 5. 8. Now, pour both liquids in a cookie tray and let it dry. 9. When all the liquid has dried, a yellowish gummy looking substance will appear on the cookie sheet. 10. Take the yellow gum and put this into capsules. ========================================================================= You can get the capsules just by buying something like DEXITRIM or some other pill. Even CONTACT comes in jel capsules. Just empty them out and put the yellow gum in the capsules. Allow the capsules to sit over night for best results. 34 Grams of morning glory=1 trip to da moon 18 Grams of hawaiian wood=Another trip to da moon **************************************** * THUNDER GOD * * GLADLY PRESENTS * * * * LSD * * TAKEN FROM * * THE ANARCHIST COOKBOOK * * BY * * WILLIAM POWELL * **************************************** WELCOME TO MY FILE ON LSD. IN THIS I WILL DIRECTLY WRITE THE SECTION ON LSD FROM THE BOOK ANARCHISTS COOKBOOK ---------------------------------------- LSD I THINK, OF ALL THE DRUGS ON THE BLACK MARKET TODAY, LSD IS THE MOST INTER- ESTING AND THE STRANGEST. IT IS THE MOST RECENT MAJOR DRUG TO COME TO LIFE IN THE PSYCHEDELIC SUBCULTURE. HUXLEY EXPERIMEN TED WITH MESCALINE MANY YEARS BEFORE PSYCHEDELICS REACHED THEIR MASS-MARKET PROPORTIONS,BUT THIS EXPERIMENTATION WAS NOT WITH THE SAME FRAME OF MIND AS THESE DRUGS ARE HANDLED TODAY. PROBABLY THE GREAT-GRANDDADDY TO THE WHOLE PSYCHEDELIC COMMUNITY WAS ANTONIN ARTAUD , WHO PERSONALLY EXPERIMANTED WITH PEYOTE IN MEXICO. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUXLEY'S AND ARTAUD'S EXPERIMENTATION WAS THAT HUXLEY MANAGED TO KEEP HIS EXPERIENCES UNDER LABATORY CONTROL, WHICH HE SET UP HIMSELF,WHEREAS ARTAUD ALLOWED HIS EXPERIENCES TO BECOME PART OF HIS LIFE. ARTAUD WAS CHANGED BY HIS ENCOUNTERS WITH PEYOTE, WAS THIS BAD? A DIRTY SHIRT IS ALSO CHANGED WHEN IT IS WASHED. THROUGH THIS CHANGE ARTAUD WAS ABLE TO SEE AND UNDERSTAND IDEAS AND CONCEPTS ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL. HE WAS ABLE TO TEAR APART RATIONALIZATIONS, WITH OUT REGAURD FOR CONTEMPORARY METHODS OF ORGANIZATION, OR EVEN CONTEMPORARY VERSIONS OF TRUTH. ARTAUD FOUND,IN HIS OWN WAY,HIS OWN TRUTHS AND HIS OWN STRUCTURES OF VALUE. THEY LOCKED HIM UP... I DIED AT RODEZ UNDER ELECTROSHOCK. I DIED. LEGALLY AND MEDICALLY DIED. ELECTROSHOCK COMA LASTS 15 MINUTES. A HALF AND HOUR OR MORE THEN THE PATIENT BRETHES. NOW ONE HOUR AFTER THE SHOCK,I STILL HAD HAD NOT AWADEND AND HAD STOPED BREATHI . SURPRISED AT MY ABNORMAL RIDGIDRY, AN ATTENDENT HAD GONE TO GET HE PHYSISION IN CHARGE,WHO,AFTER EXAMINING ME,FOUND NO MORE SIGNS OF LIFE IN ME. THIS PASSAGE WAS TAKEN FROM THE ARTAUD ANTHOLOGY. I FIND THIS IMPOSSIBLE TO THROW THIS OF AS THE RAVINGS OF A MADMAN FOR,IF THAT BE TRUE, THAN THERE CAN BE NO TRUTH, ONLY MADNES AND SANITY, LOGIC AND ILLOGIC. LSD HAS NEVER CAUSED INSANITY. IT DOES NOT HAVE THAT POWER. ALL LSD DOES IS ALLOW A MAN TO LOOK UPON ORDINARY THINGS AND EVEN ON HIMSELF MANY TIMES FOR THE FIRST TIME. LSD CANNOT BRINGOUT LATENT QUALITIES IN YOUR PERSONALITY. IT CANNOT MAKE YOU CRAZY,JUST AS IT CANNOT MAKE YOU INTO A WARMER MORE BEUTIFULL PERSON. WHAT LSD CAN DO IS SHOW YOU WHAT YOU AS A PERSON IS COMPRISED OF. LSD IS NOTHING BUT A MEDIUM TO DISCOVER THE ESSANCE OF BEING. LSD HAS BEEN ILLEGAL FOR YEARS NOW, MAKING IT AVAILABLE ON THE BLACK MARKET. WHEN BUYING ANYTHING ON THE BLACK MARKET FOLLOW THESE IMORTANT RULES (TG: THESE ARE JUST COMMON SENSE BUT SOME PEOPLE DONT USE IT) 1. NEVER BUY OF THE STREET OF FROM A STRANGER. 2. NEVER FRONT MONEY. 3. IF YOU ARE HOLDING A LARGE SUM OF MONEY NEVER GO ALONE ANYWHERE WITH SOMEONE YOU DONT TRUST, MANY DEALERS ARE IN REALITY JUKIES TOO. 4. NEVER TAKE A WEAPON WITH YOU WHEN DEALING WITH DOPE. 5. NEVER BUY A LARGE QUANTITY WITHOUT SAMPLING IT FIRST 6. IF YOUR ARE IN THE DEALERS APARTMENT NEVER EXCEPT FOOD FROM HIM. 7. BAD ACID IS USUALLY NOTHING MORE THAN SPEED, OR RAT POISON. 8. NEVER BUY L.B.J. IT IS A MIX OF ACID,BELLODONNA,HEROIN. ---------------------------------------- SINCE MOST OF US CANT GET ACCESS TO A LAB I WILL GO RIGHT TO THE SECTION ON MAKIND LSD IN YOU KITCHIN, ---------------------------------------- MAKING LSD IN YOU KITCHIN 1. GRIND UP 150 GRAMS OF MORNING GLORY SEEDS OR BABY HAWAIIAN WOOD ROSE SEEDS. 2. IN 130 CC. OF PETROLEUM ETHER, SOAK SEEDS FOR 2 DAYS. 3. FILTER SOLUTION THROUGH TIGHT SCREEN THEN THROW AWAY THE LIQUID AND ALLOW THE SEED MUSH TO DRY. 4. FOR ANOTHER 2 DAYS ALLOW THE MUSH TO SOAK IN 110 CC. OF WOOD ALCHOL. 5. FILTER THE SOLUTION AGAIN AND SAVING THE LIQUID IN A VIAL LABLED "1". 6. REPEAT STEPS 4 AND 5 PUTTIN THE LIQUID IN VIAL "2" AND THROWIN ` AWAY THE MUSH. 7. POUR THE 2 LIQUIDS IN A COOKIE TRAY AND ALLOW TO EVAPORATE. WHEN THIS IS DONE SCRAPE OF YELLOW MUCK,THIS IS YOUR FINAL PRODUCT. MANY COMPANIES POISON THEIR SEEDS SO EITHER USE SEEDS U PICKED YOURSELF OR ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY. CHONG'S NURSERY AND FLOWERS P.O. BOX 2154 HONOLULU, HAWAII DOSAGES THE POTENCY OF THIS DRUG IS MESURED IN MICROGRAMS OR MICS. USUALLY BETWEEN 300 AND 500 MICS IS ENOUGH FOR A GOOD TRIP. -------------------------------------- HAVE FUN WITH WHAT I JUST WROTE BUT DONT GET CAUGHT BY THE PHEDS,PENALTY IS HIGH. BE LOOKING FOR MORE FILES BY ME. SO TILL NEXT TIME, KILL PHEDS,AND THOSE WHO INSIST ON CALLING US COMPUTERBUDDIES. EVEN AFTER U'VE THROWN THEM ACROS THE ROOM. THUNDER GOD //////////// CCRRAACCKKLE BBUUBBRROOMM How to make LSD : by Dr. D-Code & The Pimp brough to CAL by CC. --------------------------------------- 1. Grind up 150 grams of baby Hawaiian wood rose seeds 2. In 130cc of petroleum ether, soak seeds for 2 days 3. Filter solution thru a tight screen 4. Throw away liquid and allow the seed mush to dry 5. For 2 days allow the mush to soak in 110cc of wood alcohol 6. Filter the solution again saving the liquid and labelling it #1 7. Re-soak the mush in 110cc of wood alcohol for 2 days 8. Filter and throw away the mush 9. Add the liquid from the second soak to the solution labeled #1 10. Pour the liquid into a cookie tray and let it evaporate 11. When the liquid has evaporated, a yellow gum remains 12. Scrape the yellow stuff into capsules. Order the seeds from a wholesaler >onlyFrom _Psychedelic Chemistry_ by M.V.Smith, 2nd edition p 5: "There is a great deal of superstition regarding purification of psychedelics. Actually, any impurities which may be present as a result of synthetic procedures will almost certainly be without any effect on the trip. If there are 200 micrograms of LSD in a tablet, there could only be 200 mics of impurities present even if the LSD was originally only 50% pure (assuming nothing else has been added), and few compounds will produce a significant effect until a hundred to a thousand times this amount has been ingested. Even mescaline, which has a rather specific psychedelic effect, requires about a thousand thimes this amount." .............................. Note that: 1) on a piece of paper, vs. a tablet, you can't even add significant amounts of adulterants 2) adulterants would cost, whereas blank paper will rip someone off just as well. LSD itself has some "body-kinks" on some people some times. nausea is one of them. its usually mild and transient. it also has speedlike (ie, adrenergic stimulation) effects, etc. .............................. [Referring to strychnine] 15 mg has been fatal, but a more typical fatal dose is on the order of 50mg. [Another post indicates 25 mg. as the LD50] 1 mg of strychnine orally probably has no observable pharmacological effects in a typical adult. [1 mg being ten times the effective dose of LSD, by the way.] Actually, I think the fact that PharmChem analyzed something on the order of 2,000 LSD samples between 1972 and 1979 and never found one with strychnine in it would be better. I'm going over all their data with a toothpick and I'll get back to you on exactly what I find. It looks like the percent of LSD with strychnine in it is, however, at least under .05%. More a little later. .............................. >From "The PharmChem Newsletter" (vol 3, no 3), 1973: Summary of Street Drug Results - 1973: "Of 189 samples of LSD quantitatively analyzed, the average dose was 67.25ug LSD. Of the 32 samples of alleged mescaline actually containing mescaline, [...stuff about mescaline and mushrooms deleted...] It is interesting to note the low incidence of deception among the less sought after psychotomimetics LSD and PCP." .............................. This is the PharmChem analysis of LSD from 1972 (vol 1, no 1) up to the time that the DEA no longer allowed them to make quantitative measurements (1974- vol 3, no 2 included). NOTE: NO STRYCHNINE! also note that PharmChem found a sample of Shrooms contaminated with Strychnine in 1972 (vol 1, no 7), and I would think it safe to assume that they also checked LSD for Strychnine. ****************************** BAD TRIPS: A person on LSD who becomes depressed, agitated, or confused may experience these feelings in an overwhelming manner that grows on itself. The best solution is to remove disturbing influences, get to a safe, comforting environment, and reassure the tripper that things are alright. It may comfort those who fear that they are losing their minds to be reminded that it will end in several hours. Authorities are fond of administering injections of anti-psychotic drugs. Recovery in the presence of authorities, in hospitals or police stations, is not pleasant. Sedatives or tranquilizers such as Valium may help reduce panic and anxiety, but the best solution is calm talking. Some claim that niacin (an over the counter vitamin supplement) can abort a trip, but this may be due to a placebo effect (niacin produces a flushing effect). ****************************** MYTHS: LSD does not form "crystals" that reside in the body to be "dislodged" later, causing flashbacks. LSD is a crystalline solid (though it is unlikely that one would ever have enough to be visible to the naked eye) but it is easily water soluble, thus cannot form bodily deposits. Furthermore, it is metabolized and excreted in hours. The bogus "loosened crystal" description in not necessary to explain flashbacks, which are psychological phenomena (see FLASHBACKS). LSD does not cause chromosome damage. In Science 30 April 1972, Volume 172 Number 3982 p. 431-440 there was an article by Norman I. Dishotsky, William D. Loughman, Robert E. Mogar and Wendell R. Lipscomb titled "LSD and Genetic Damage - Is LSD chromosome damaging, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic?". They reviewed 68 studies and case reports published 1967-1972, concluding "From our own work and from a review of literature, we believe that pure LSD ingested in moderate doses does not damage chromosomes in vivo, does not cause detectable genetic damage, and is not a teratogen or carcinogen in man." Well, there's the study by Sidney Cohen which was cited here recently, Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, 130, 1960. The following is from Jay Stevens' Storming Heaven: "Cohen surveyed a sample of five thousand individuals who had taken LSD twenty-five thousand times. He found and average of 1.8 psychotic episodes per thousand ingestions, 1.2 attempted suicides, and 0.4 completed suicides. 'Considering the enormous scope of the psychic responses it induces,' he concluded, 'LSD is an astonishingly safe drug.'" Some urban legends: I've heard two "stories" about people blinding themselves on "drugs". One was revealed as a hoax by the person who perpetrated it (apparently it was intended to "illustrate" the dangers of LSD), another is trotted out by anti-drug speakers at high schools: 1) Seven people on LSD stared at the sun and lost 90% of their reading vision. 2) A teenager arrested while on LSD plucked out his eyeballs in his jail cell, and felt no pain. While these are bogus, the drug has powerful effects on the mind and the consumer should be aware of the hazards, and act appropriately. .............................. There is an occasionally circulated fake warning from some police department about LSD-laced "tattoos" or stickers (the "blue star tattoo" story) being given to children. This probably originated with some hick cop or ignorant and panicky parent not understanding some children-cartoon (eg, mickey mouse in sorcerer's garb) printed on a sheet of blotter. .............................. See also myths about testing in DRUG TESTING ****************************** DANGERS: Purely psychological hazards, not harmful to body. May release latent psychosis or exacerbate depression, leading to irrational behavior. There is also a danger of foolish or incautious behavior, e.g, misjudging distances or thinking one can fly. Physical overdose is not a hazard, though one may easily ingest more than one may be able to handle psychologically. .............................. Because the "LSD psychosis" is not distinguishable from non-drug- induced psychosis, we have reasonable evidence to conclude that LSD was not the sole cause of psychosis. Instead, it would seem that the drug brought on the problems in vulnerable individuals. Interestingly, the rate of parental alcoholism was found to be much higher in LSD patients than in other patients or in the general population by one study (Vardy and Kay, Arch-Gen-Psych, 1983 40(8): 877-83). .............................. Lethal (toxic) doses of LSD are conservatively several tens of thousands of times as much as a normal dose, making it (in the toxic sense) one of the safest drugs known. See section on Pharmacology for description of bodily side-effects. The LD50 for psilocybin (active ingredient in mushrooms) is 275 mg/kg i.v. in mice. Of course, it would take lots more p.o. to kill someone. The reported LD50 values for LSD are 46, 16.5, 0.3 mg/kg I.V. for mice, rats, and rabbits, respectively. Again, it's hard to accurately translate these numbers to oral values. Note that an average human dose is 0.001 mg/kg, ie, 1 microgram/kg, ie, 1 part per billion by weight. .............................. Never take any drugs while pregnant. ****************************** FLASHBACKS: Quoted without permission from 'Licit and Illicit Drugs,' written by Edward M. Brecher and the editors of Consumer Reports. ISBN: 0-316-15340-0 A simple explanation of LSD flashbacks, and of their changed character after 1967, is available. According to this theory, almost everybody suffers flashbacks with or without LSD. Any intense emotional experience--the death of a loved one, the moment of discovery that one is in love, the moment of an automobile smashup or of a narrow escape from a smashup--may subsequently and unexpectedly return vividly to consciousness weeks or months later. Since the LSD trip is often an intense emotional experience, it is hardly surprising that it may similarly "flash back." "Post-traumatic stress disorder has been commonly associated with war veterans, but it also affects victims of disasters and violence... Experts estimate that 1% of the population suffers from the disorder." ---LA Times, Feb 18 1992, p A3, "Journey For Better Life Hell For Some Women." ****************************** INSOMNIA: Insomnia occurs frequently after the trip. A mild, over-the-counter sleeping aid can help, and these antihistamines do not produce adverse interactions. Also, some people like to consume a small amount of alcoholic beverage to "smooth the jitteries". The usual precautions about sleeping aids if alcohol has been consumed apply of course. ****************************** TOLERANCE: Aquired rapidly, within 3 days. Tolerance dissipates equally rapidly, without withdrawal, craving, or symptoms of addiction. Cross-tolerance can and is developed between other indole hallucinogens, eg, DMT, LSD and Psilocybin. ****************************** BOTANY: "Indole Alkaloids In Plant Hallucinogens" Richard Evans Schultes, PhD. Journal of Psychedelic Drugs Vol.8(No.1) Jan-Mar 1976 "The main constituent of the seeds of Rivea corymbosa is ergine or d-lysergic acid amide. Minor alkaloids present are the related d-isolysergic acid amide (isoergine), chanoclavine, elymoclavine and lysergol. The seeds of Ipomoea violacea have a similar composition, but instead of lysergol, they have ergometrine (ergonovine). Later, very minor amounts of two alkaloids ergometrinine and penniclavine - were found in I. violacea by chromatography. the total alkaloid content of the seeds of Ipomoea viloacea is approximately five times as great as that of the seeds of Rivea corymbosa: 0.06% in the former; 0.012% in the latter. This difference in the alkaloid content explains why Indians employ smaller doses of seeds of the Ipomoea than of the Rivea. Summary: A secret religion existed for 2,000 years in Greece (until the christians displaced it around 400 AD). The initiation was open to anyone who spoke Greek and hadn't committed murder, once in their life. After 6 month long preparatory rituals, members walked to Eleusius whereupon they underwent secret rituals. The rituals remained secret until the 1970's. Wasson, an ethnomycological scholar and former banker (and the first white to trip on shrooms with the mexican indians) proposed the following explanation of the Eleusian mysteries to Hoffman, an ergot-alkaloid expert chemist, and Ruck, a greek scholar: The Secret of the ritual involved the personal visions induced by drinking the grain decoction administered to the initiates. The domestication of grains permitted the development of greek civilization; it also brought ergot fungus (of St. Anthony's fire infamy). The thin book contains their argument for the use of the ergot fungus in Eleusian rites, Wasson providing some background on the use of mushrooms and grains and their role in the culture; Hoffman on the psychoactivity of ergot strains; and Ruck on the mythological and cultural backround of the sect. Evidence includes: Hoffman dosed himself with large (ergot-derived) doses of obstetric compounds to assay their hallucinogenic potential, and found them to possess such activity. The Eleusian temple site still remains, but there is no room to view theatric performances, just rows of tripping initiates, further supporting their argument. An interesting read, and its neat to think that the culture that more or less lead to the western industrial one had psychedelic rites. (Various greek prominant figures attended the rituals, including Plato). .............................. IPOMOEA PURPUREA: A NATURALLY OCCURRING PSYCHEDELIC Charles Savage, Willis W. Harman and James Fadiman >From "Altered States of Consciousness, A Book of Readings" edited by Charles Tart BF311.T28 Of the naturally occurring plant alkaloids used in ancient and modern religious rites and divination one of the least studied is ololiuqui. The earliest known description of its use is by Hernandez, the King of Spain's personal physician, who spent a number of years in Mexico studying the medicinal plants of the Indians and "accurately illustrated ololiuqui as a morning glory in his work which was not published until 1651" (Schultes, 1960). In his words, "When a person takes ololiuqui, in a short time he loses clear reasoning because of the strength of the seed, and he believes he is in communion with the devil" (Alacon, 1945). Schultes (1941) and Wasson (1961) have reported in detail on the religious and divinatory use of two kinds of morning-glory seeds, Rivea corymbosa and Ipomoea violacea, among the Mazatec and Zapotec indians. The first of these is assumed to be the ololiuqui of the ancient Aztecs. In 1955 Osmond described personal experiments with Rivea corymbosa seeds and reported that the effects were similar to those of d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD-25). He suggested (1957) that the word psychedelic (meaning mind-manifesting) be used as a generic term for this class of substances to refer to their consciousness-expanding and psychotherapeutic function as contrasted with the hallucinogenic aspect. In 1960 Hoffman reported that he had isolated d-lysergic acid amide (LA) and d-isolysergic acid amide from the seed of both Rivea corymbosa and Ipomoea violacea. LA is very similar to LSD in its psychological and physiological manifestations but is reported to have about one twentieth the psychological effectiveness of LSD (Cerletti & Doepfner, 1958). The work of these investigators led us to a preliminary study of the psychedelic properties of species of Ipomoea which are commonly found within the continental United States. The seeds of Ipomoea purpurea, the common climbing morning glory, resemble the seeds of Ipomoea violacea and have been found to have similar psychedelic properties. Recent analysis by Taber et al. (1963) has verified that LA is present in the varieties used and is probably the primary active agent. The effects of the seeds of Ipomoea purpurea (varieties Heavenly Blue and Pearly Gates) in a total of 45 cases are summarized below. The subjects are all normally functioning adults and the majority had previous experience with LSD. The onset of effects is about half an hour after the seeds have been chewed and swallowed and they last from five to eight hours. Low Dose, 20-50 Seeds (11 Subjects) This dosage rarely produces any visual distortions, although with eyes closed there may be beginning imagery. Restlessness, evidenced by alternating periods of pacing about and lying down, may be present. There tends to be a heightened awareness of objects and of nature, and enhanced rapport with other persons. A feeling of emotional clarity and of relaxation is likely to persist for several hours after other effects are no longer noticeable. Medium Dose, 100-150 Seeds (22 Subjects) In this range the effects resemble those reported for medium-dose (75-150 micrograms) LSD experiences, including spatial distortions, visual and auditory hallucinations, intense imagery with eyes closed, synaesthesia and mood elevation. These effects, which occur mainly during the period of 1 to 4 hours after ingestion, are typically followed by a period of alert calmness which may last until the subject goes to sleep. High Dose, 200-500 Seeds (12 Subjects) In this range the first few hours may resemble the medium-dose effects described above. However, there is usually a period during which the subjective states are of a sort not describable in terms of images or distortions, states characterized by loss of ego boundaries coupled with feelings of euphoria and philosophical insight. These seem to parallel the published descriptions of experiences with high doses (200-500 micrograms) of LSD given in a supportive, therapeutic setting as reported by Sherwood et al. (1962). All the subjects who had previous experience with LSD claimed the effects of the seeds were similar to those of LSD. Transient nausea was the most commonly reported side effect, beginning about one half hour after ingestion and lasting a few minutes to several hours. Other reported side effects not commonly found with LSD were a drowsiness or torpor (possibly due to a glucoside also present in the seeds) and a coldness in the extremities suggesting that the ergine content of the seeds may be causing some vascular constriction. (If this is the case, there may be some danger of ergot poisoning resulting from excessive dosages of the seeds.) The only untoward psychic effect was a prolonged (eight hours) disassociative reaction which was terminate with chlorpromazine [Thorazine]. The possibility of prolonged adverse reactions to the psychological effects of the seeds is essentially the same as with LSD, and the same precautions should be observed (Cohen & Ditman, 1963). .............................. IPOMOEA.003 7-MAY-90 Additional Notes: Ipomoea purpurea is sold as the "Heavenly Blue" variety of morning glory. "Ipomoea tricolor" is the trade name used for that variety. It is identical with the species of morning glory described above. The seeds must be chewed or ground in order to be effective. Soaking the ground seeds in water for several hours, filtering out the grounds, and then drinking only the water portion of the mixture can reduce some of the stomach-upset symptoms if such occur. Unpleasant LSD and morning glory trips can be smoothed out or even stopped by taking niacin (in the form of nicotinic acid, vitamin B-3 or "niacin"). Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the incidence of paranoia and prevent depletion of the vitamin from the adrenal glands during LSD trips. There have been reports that commercially available packets of morning glory seeds from some distributors are coated with fungicides or other chemicals to increase shelf life or discourage the practice of eating them. Seeds from plants grown in one's own garden will be safe as long as you do not spray them with insecticides. The last few notes about Niacin and Vitamin C are based on a paperback edition of Hoffer & Osmonds "The Psychedelics" It's pretty clear that the latin names of this plant are somewhat confused (which is typical). Ipomoea purpurea, Ipomoea tricolor, Ipomoea violacea and Ipomoea rubro-caerulea are all the same plant. The other variety of morning glory, "Ololiuhqui" has at least two Latin names as well: Rivea corymbosa, and Turbina corymbosa. .............................. "Recreational use of Ergoline Alkaloids from Argyreia Nervosa" William E. Shawcross Journal of Psychedelic Drugs Vol. 15(4) Oct-Dec 1983 CHEMISTRY AND EFFECT OF THE SEEDS The Hawaiian baby woodrose entered the drug scene in 1965 with the publication of a paper in "Science" entitled "Ergoline Alkaloids in Tropical Wood Roses" by Hylin and Watson. The wide circulation of this journal assured thorough dissemination of the information they presented. They wrote, "The possible health and legal problems associated with the presence of similar compounds in commercially cultivated plants led us to examine the ornamental wood roses, Ipomoea tuberosa and Argyreia nervosa, both common Hawaiian crops that have assumed commerical importance as components of [the] dried tropical flower industry." Comparing the seeds of these two plants with those of the morning glory varieties Pearly Gates and Heavenly Blue, they found the following yield of alkaloids (mg of alkaloid/g of seed material): Heavenly Blue 0.813 Pearly Gates 0.423 I. tuberosa [None] A. nervosa 3.050 The seed of A. nervosa is the best plant source of ergoline alkaloids discovered; it contains approximately 3 mg of alkaloidal material per gram of seed. Approximately one-eighth of this is lysergamide. Hylin and Watson found the major alkaloidal constituents in A. nervosa seeds to be ergine (780 mcg/g of fresh seed) and isoergine and penniclavine (555 mcg). [Note: Argyreia nervosa has NO history of shamanic use as a hallucinogen] This is an excerpt from the article cited. There's no record of Argyreia being used as an hallucinogen in India, but it was used externally as some kind of skin medicine. There's been speculation that Argyreia might have been a component of "Soma", but there's no evidence for that, apparently. Because there's not a long history of human usage of Argyreia, it may be that there are glycosides not mentioned here that take effect at higher doses or might cause stomach upset, tachycardia etc. The article mentioned intestinal complaints in one or two cases at higher experimental doses. ****************************** CHEMISTRY: lysergic acid diethylamide _is_ lysergic acid diethylamide (or... N,N-diethyl-D-lysergamide or... 9,10-Didehydo-N,N-diethyl-6-methylergoline-8B-carboxamide). Only one stereoisomer (the d-) is psychoactive. Thus, racemic (l/d 50-50 mix) lsd shows half the potency of the dextro form. In synthesis it is possible to recover the l-form for the lysergic acid. Lysergic Acid Diethylamide is LSD rather than LAD because the German word for acid is saeure (sp). Thus LSD is an "ergot"-like substance. ****************************** MECHANISM OF ACTION: (Note: the mechanism of action of LSD and other psychedelics is uncertain.) >From a chapter titled Hallucinogens and Other Psychotomimetics: Biological Mechanisms by S.J.Watson "The current thesis of the effect of indole hallucinogens on 5-hydroxytrypamine might be stated as follows: LSD acts to preferentially inhibit serotonergic cell firing and seems to spare postsynaptic serotnergic receptors. This preference is shared by other simillar hallucinogens but in a limited fashion. Nonhallucinogenic analogs of LSD show no preference. These results suggest that there are two different steric conformation of serotonergic receptors, one of which has higher affinity for LSD than the other. In general, 5-ht is an inhibitory transmitter; thus, when its activity is decreased, the next neuron in the chain is freed from inhibition and becomes more active. Since serotnergic systems appear to be intimately involved int eh control of sensation, sleep, attention, and mood, it may be possible to explain the actions of LSD and other hallucinogens by their disinhibition of these critical systems. There is also evidence for interaction with dopaminergic systems. .............................. LSD acts as a 5HT autoreceptor agonist in the raphe nucleus. These autoreceptors are typically considered to be 5HT1As. It also acts as a 5HT2 agonist, which is thought to be the main site of hallucinogenic activity. It's probably best called a a mixed 5HT2/5HT1 receptor partial agonist. I don't know of its effects on dopamine. Wouldn't be surprised if it has 'em; the systems aren't really functionally separable. The DA effects wouldn't be necessary for hallucinogenic activity, I'd bet. .............................. >"If there's no documentation, you can't tell bugs from features." ---C.P. ****************************** RELATED COMPOUNDS: Related compounds are the indole hallucinogens including DMT (dimethyl-tryptamine), DET (diethyl-), etc.; psilocybin; lysergic acid. DMT is very fast acting, lasting less than an hour. Psilocybin, found in hallucinogenic (aka magic or mexican) mushrooms, has effects similar to LSD but they work for approximately half the duration. These are all indole derivatives like the neurotransmitter serotonin, 5-hydroxy-tryptamine. "Indole" is the name of the 6-carbon ring attached to the 5-ring containing a nitrogen. The lysergic acid molecule contains an indole structure plus additional rings. LSD's two ethyl groups hanging off the amine may be replaced with other carbon chains for compounds with different durations, potencies, and effects. While LSD is semi-synthetic, DMT and psilocybin are found in nature. See the sections on BOTANY and ANTHROPOLOGY for info on related natural (plant) compounds and their uses. .............................. 1) DMT, DET, psylocin, psylocybin, : The mushroom psylocybin cubensis contains all four of these indole derivatives, as well as others. DMT is dimethyltryptamine, an indole derivative which has functionalized at the 3 position with the dimethyl ethylamine group. It is a close relative to the amino acid, tryptophan, which until recently was available in bulk at vitamin shops, until some jerk poisoned himself by taking a wonga dose of it. [Actually it may have been a single toxic batch mistakenly produced in Japan.] A prep came out in 1984 for LSD using l--tryptophan as the precursor, so this may have facilitated the government's pullin it from the shelves. I can't find tryptophan anywhere, now, and I've tried, bud. DMT, and it's brother DET (diethyltryptamine), have no oral activity, so have to be smoked. They stink like fish oil when lit, though. Both have hallucinogenic effects within 2-3 minutes of toking, wand while DMT lasts for only a half hour, DET is a smoother, more euphoric high, lasting twice as long. DET has effects similar to psylocybin. Psylocybin is DMT which has a functional group, phosphoryloxy-, at the 4 position on the indole ring. This group is immediately converted to hydroxyl- as soon as the stuff hits your stomach to give the cousin, psylocin. In preparing the drug, then, it is not necessary to proceed beyond the psylocin. DMT and DET are easily derived from many indole derivatives, the easiest of which is indole-3-acetic acid. I've done this reaction and it stinks to high heaven of indole gunge, skatoles (methylindoles), and indenes. Bad news if you want to make it at home, because the stench is pervasive. Other derivatives, using phenyl or butyl groups have been reported as having oral activity, so it is not necessary to smoke the stuff. Doses run at about a hundred mgs for smoked drug, while psylocin is orally active at about 5 mgs. Precursors (ergot alkaloids, used medicinally for migraines and ob/gyn due to their vasoconstrictive effects) are closely watched. (They are obtained through commercially cultured ergot fungus; one could theoretically extract lsyergic amides from morning glory or Hawaiian wood rose seeds.) (Though there are routes to synthesize lysergic acid from "scratch", these are complicated also.) Other typically needed chemicals are very dangerous. Serious experience in organic chemistry lab would be necessary. If you have to ask where to find the recipes, you don't know enough about chemistry to try it. (For the curious: the _Anarchists Cookbook_ is a bad place to start. _Psychedelic Chemistry_ is better, the patent office or chem. lit. better.) And you'll probably trip during manufacture if you actually succeed. Its easier and safer to buy it on the black market. ****************************** DRUG TESTING: No risk. Its not looked for, hard to find, and transient. .............................. "A maximum concentration of 2-8 ng/ml [Plasma concentration of LSD] was reached 1.0-1.25 h after an oral dose of 160 ug. ...[A] value of 2.9 h for the elimination half-life of LSD from plasma [was reached]. [Upshall, D.G., Wailling, D.G.: The determination of LSD in human plasma following oral administration. "LSD and its metabolites were still detectable in human urine for as long as 4 days after the ingestion of 0.2 mg of the drug. [Faed, E.M., McLeod, W.R.: A urine screening test of lysergide. Journal of Chromatographic Science. 11, 4-6 (1973)] Note that standard, cheap initial drug screening does not use chromatography or mass-spectrometry, and does not look for LSD. .............................. Spinal taps are not particularly useful (cerebro-spinal fluid doesn't concentrate LSD or metabolites) and are never done under any circumstances: they are painful and dangerous. .............................. You might want to mention that Abbie Hoffman's _Steal This Urine Test_ has a table which claims lsd is detectable for 40 days. I'm almost sure this was a typo. .............................. > 1] How long can LSD be detected in the body? This varies by the test being used, the detection limit placed on the test, the point of collection and type of the sample fluid, the amount of LSD that was taken, and the individual in question. Assuming the testers are using an RIA screening test with the cutoff set at 0.1 ng/ml and assuming that the user has recently emptied their bladder, then the detection limit for one hit (100 ug) is normally around 30 hours. Each doubling of the initial amount will add about 5 hours. Thus taking 8 hits will leave a user vulnerable for approximately 2 days. (NOTE: This is based on the data in [7]) > 2] What exact form of test can be used to detect LSD in the body? There are a number of tests which can be used to detect LSD in the body. Abuscreen, a product of Roche Diagnostic Systems, is a series of RadioImmunoAssay (RIA) tests, one of which is used to detect LSD and its metabolites in whole blood, serum (blood), urine and stomach contents [1]. RIA can in theory be used to detect quantities as small as 0.020 nanograms (ng) per milliliter (ml) of sample [2]. Laboratory tests have shown that RIA results are accurate down to at least 0.1 ng/ml [3]. The manufacturer recommends limiting the cutoff to 0.5 ng/ml. EMIT, a product of Syva Corporation, is another series of tests, one of which can be used to detect LSD and its metabolites in serum and urine. EMIT stands for Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique. Both EMIT and Abuscreen are "positive/negative" response tests (much like pregnancy tests) which require periodic equipment calibration and consume chemicals for each test performed. A basic battery of tests costs approx. $15-$25 per person [4]. The basic tests (recommended by NIDA) include marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, and phencyclidine (PCP). Normally, unless an (employer) specifically requests the test, an LSD assay is not run. Both Roche and Syva recommend confirmation of positive results by using a different test. The usual method of confirming positive results is some form of chromatography. These include High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC)[3], and different forms of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)[5][6][7][8][9]. HPTLC and GC/MS can be used to give quantitative results as opposed to the Boolean results from EMIT or Abuscreen. Laboratory tests have shown that GC/MS test for LSD in urine[6] and blood[7] can be accurate down to 0.1 ng/ml. The cost for confirmation of a positive screening test is approximately $50-60. Positive results to either EMIT and RIA are held to be "probable cause" by U.S. courts. GC/MS results are held to be "proof" by U.S. courts. > I am asking for an actual text message containing a short, precise > description of each test, Immunoassays chemicals are created by injecting animals (rabbits, sheep, donkey, etc) with the drug to be tested for and an albumin which force the animal to produce antibodies. The antibodies are then removed from the animal, purified and bottled. In RIA tests, the antibodies are then added to the fluid sample with a radioactively labeled chemical. Any of the drug (or similar chemicals) found in a sample that is being tested will react with this glop and by measuring the radioactivity, the amount of drugs can be determined [2][10]. > 3] How can such a test be beaten? While there is some literature on adulterating urine samples to produce false negative results [11], there has been little written that applies specifically to the LSD screening tests. I would suggest you read the article posted by Paul Hager paying particular attention to the warning about water intoxication [12]: In [email protected] wrote + Recommended: "Dealing With Urine Tests on Short Notice" + by Dale Gieringer, California NORML + + Most folks recommend that people hydrate themselves -- the idea + being that by drinking water and taking a diuretic that will + promote water loss, the urine will be very dilute and THC metabolite + content from "tomatoe" consumption will drop below the 100 ng/ml + threshold that defines a "positive". + + Mr. Gieringer recommends that, the day before the test, the + person drink lots of water. The immunsoassay tests vary in their specificity. Some display a relatively low cross-reactivity[13], others a high cross-reactivity[14]. The exact metabolites of LSD in humans have not been fully determined yet, though animal studies have been done. The only verified human metabolite I could find in the literature was N-demethyl-LSD[6] but I did not check all the references. FOOTNOTES: [1] Altunkaya, D; Smith R.N. A gas chromatography/resonance electron capture ionization mass spectrometry (GC/MS) assay for LSD and N-demethyl-LSD in urine has been developed, in which the drug and its metabolite are converted to their N-tri-fluoroacetyl derivatives prior to GC/MS analysis. Linear and reproducible calibration curves have been obtained for LSD concentrations from 0.05 to 5.0 ng/mL, and for N-demethyl-LSD concentrations from 0.03 to 5.0 ng/mL. The assay was used to determine the urinary concentrations of LSD and N-demethyl-LSD following administration of a single oral dose of the drug (1 mu g/kg) to an adult volunteer. The rates of excretion of LSD and N-demethyl-LSD reached maxima in urine collected at time intervals of 4-6 and 8-10 h after administration, respectively. The elimination half-lives for LSD and N-demethyl-LSD were 3.6 and 10.0 h, respectively MISCELLANEOUS Treatment: experimental Anal. Chem. Set includes expectations about the drug's actions and how the person will react. Setting includes the social and physical conditions. For LSD and the hallucinogen-type drug more than other psychoactives, set and setting are very important in determining the nature of the experience. These factors make the difference between, e.g., the experiences of someone taking the drug for enhancement at a concert, for psychotherapy in an doctor's office, in a religious context, or in the outdoors for an aesthetic experience. For best results, one should take LSD only with people one trusts in safe, comfortable surroundings, free of everyday intrusions. Tripping alone is a very risky thing to do, that inexperienced people should avoid. ****************************** STORAGE: First, note that LSD is a fairly stable organic molecule, no more or less fragile than other molecules with comparable structures. The main factors to be concerned with are moisture (due to leaching and facilitated chemical reactions in the presense of moisture), oxygen, light, and temperature. Reaction rates typically depend upon temperature exponentially. These factors basically apply to all organic compounds. Sealing in AL foil in a cool dark place is fine. Some recommend refrigeration, but be careful about nosy guests, condensation, and frost. Multiple, redundant seals are suggested, eg., paper in metal foil in plastic in a metal candy tin which has been taped shut. Should last at least a presidential term. Wallets are contraindicated as storage locations due to sweat. ****************************** SYNERGIES, BAD COMBINATIONS: Smoking cannabis products considerably increases the effects, increasing the visuals and also possibly increasing the cognitive and linguistic disorders. As the effects of LSD wear off, marijuana may bring them back, and also ease the jitteriness some dislike. Nitrous oxide goes well with LSD, though one should be extra careful (not to suffocate or fall down) with the nitrous because of the effects of the LSD. MDA & cousins can go well, but people on these drugs should not take LSD unless they are familiar with the latter's effects. Alcohol's effects are largely overwhelmed by LSD, and they act in opposite ways: alcohol being a depressant and LSD being a (hyper)stimulant. Generally mixing stimulants and sedatives is counterproductive. MAO inhibitors ??? Amphetamines and cocaine ??? ****************************** SYNTHESIS: Don't try it, too difficult and risky both physically and legally. Precursor medical drugs (ob/gyn and migraine ergot alkaloids) are watched. ****************************** X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X Another file downloaded from: The NIRVANAnet(tm) Seven & the Temple of the Screaming Electron Taipan Enigma 510/935-5845 Burn This Flag Zardoz 408/363-9766 realitycheck Poindexter Fortran 510/527-1662 Lies Unlimited Mick Freen 801/278-2699 The New Dork Sublime Biffnix 415/864-DORK The Shrine Rif Raf 206/794-6674 Planet Mirth Simon Jester 510/786-6560 "Raw Data for Raw Nerves" X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
