A research project about preservation and the Marvel fandom
Hi! My name is Shirley Chan, and I am a PhD student at Lund University in Sweden. My study focuses on how content is produced within online fan communities on social media platforms and what this entails for preservation.
What does preservation mean related to online fan communities?
Challenges in preserving digital information arise as content is easy to distribute and edit, containing textual, visual, and moving media. It also characterises social media sites, which leads to difficulties in documenting the original context of the content. Due to the dynamic nature of digital information and social media sites, social and cultural expressions risk becoming inaccessible soon, for example, the cultural practices found in the multiple online fan communities. In recent years, there have also been discussions concerning preserving information created on social media, highlighting legal and user-privacy concerns.
My personal connection with the Marvel universe is via the MCU franchise, primarily the movies, which I have enjoyed a lot (the first Marvel movie I saw was GotG!). I wanted to learn more about communities I had not participated in when starting this project. Thus, I found the marvel community here on Tumblr interesting as there is a lot of activity and content produced. I also want to explore how fan content production and communication on Tumblr differs from other sites.
As a previous participant in fandoms, I think fan culture is crucial to document as it shows several ways to engage with culture. Still, foremost, it highlights the creativity and sense of community that can arise from fandom. Therefore, I would like to study your community surrounding the Marvel universe to understand the content and online sociality. Furthermore, it can help me identify what challenges there are for preservation. Would you like to be a part of this project?
How can you help with the project?
To understand preservation connected to the community's content and Tumblr, I will conduct observations in your community. More specifically, I would like to participate in the postings in marvel-related tags and join your discussions while observing them. I will take field notes during the observations.
Further, I would like to interview you who are over 18 years old and have been active in the Marvel community on Tumblr for a minimum of 1 month. The interview will be about approx. 60-90 min, focusing on your experiences of the community, the platform and thoughts on preservation. It will be conducted on Zoom or Discord via video call or real-time text messaging. The interview can also be conducted via mail. Text-based interviews are downloaded and saved locally. Interviews conducted as video calls (with or without video) are recorded with a dictation machine and transcribed afterwards. The interview transcripts and field notes are safely stored on Lund University's servers and pseudonymised, which entails removing any personal information linked to the participants' physical identities and/or usernames.
Message me here on Tumblr if you are interested in my interview offer!
Participation is voluntary! You are welcome to message me here on Tumblr if you have any questions or want to opt-out of the project entirely - any information connected to you and your activities on Tumblr will not be included in the collected material. There is a longer description of my thesis project via my Lund University website if you want to read more: https://www.kultur.lu.se/en/person/ShirleyChan/
Thanks in advance, and I hope to hear from you soon!

hi! this is gonna sound SUPER uneducated, because on this subject, I am!! everyone i follow on tumblr, and I mean like everyone, has been posting about some smp or something lately? idk it seems to be a group of youtube folks? and i wanna get into it so i can understand my dash, but i don't know where to start or who's even involved. kinda like with the mcu, but thats besides the point. help? please? -bluebell
sure! so im not sure if your talking about dream smp or the new smp (cog smp?) so ill “briefly” talk about both under the cut. also a bit about hermitcraft bc i think people should watch hermitcraft
DREAM SMP:
dream smp is....a lot. it started with a few of Dreams friends making a survival world, continued into a hamilton roleplay, and is now....corrupt government ran by a traumatized 16 year old whos best friend is thought dead but is actually in hiding with a war criminal? its a lot of fun. to start, id suggest following one character primarily. I watch Technoblade (the war criminal) and Philza (war criminals friend and also kinda a criminal? idk hes just vibin), but you should just bounce around streams to find who you like. the most popular streamers on the smp are probably Tommyinnit, Tubbo_, Wilbur Soot, and itsFundy, but there are a TON to watch.
also, dont stress out about missing streams!! because of how many streamers are involved, there is almost constant content, so it really is a community effort to know what happens in streams. As someone who only watches technos streams, and rarely catches Philzas, i have a very small amount of knowledge gained directly from the streams, and most of it is from liveblogs and recap posts here on tumblr!
also also, don’t worry about not knowing the lore. the wiki (https://dreamteam.fandom.com/wiki/Dream_SMP) is extremely detailed, but its hard to know everything. you can start by watching recap videos (tommy and wilbur both post highlight videos on youtube) or you can jump in with streams, either is fine and as long as you’re having fun, you’re doing it right!!
OH and dont get too emotionally invested. like, not not emotionally invested, but if something gets to be too much, take a break and watch something or someone else. a lot of people had to stop watching tommys exile arc, which involved a lot of manipulation by c!dream (that means character dream, not the actual dream) and quite a few self destructive intentions by c!tommy, and so many people tag that arc as #exile arc.
uhhhh id suggest starting with techno because,,,,i love him. his ‘past livestreams’ playlist on Youtube has all his dream smp streams, and he has a few videos about whats happened. ive been doing liveblog posts of alllll his streams with timestamps so if u want me to link those,,,,feel free to ask
some selling points: more queer relationships than straight relationships, because why not. one of the characters had a sexual relationship with a fish, had a fox son, and that character (who is now a ghost) is now in a relationship with a blue sheep named friend. the ghosts father had him with a samsung smart fridge. one of the characters has taken over the world with the fridge fucker, and was in retirement before forcefully taken to an execution where he escaped death and then found a raccoon boy in his basement eating his gapples (golden apples). also the raccoon boys music discs are basically what started the entire plot.
COG SMP: a modded smp created by Ranboo, Fundy, Tubbo, 5uppp, and Awesamdude!! it was started today and it looks to be pretty chill :D
ALSO IF UR TALKING ABOUT HERMITCRAFT:
hermitcraft is a multiplayer survival whitelisted server with several people. its currently on its 7th season and focuses mostly on building and redstone, but does include roleplaying aspects. the hermits are incredibly talented, and i use it to relax after freaking out over dream smp!! content is primarily in the form of edited videos, but people do stream, especially on ‘hermitcraft stream weekends,’ where theres pretty much always someone streaming for a specific amount of time. i really like Grian, Joehills, and mumbo!! its a lot of fun and i highly recommend it

Please shut up about Marvel having too much continuity
That’s a phrase I hear thrown around endlessly by fans, ‘fans’ and comic creators themselves.
Continuity is bad we need to get rid of it or cut it down because it’s too intimidating to readers.
 This is provably untrue.
Exhibit A: The Marvel Cinematic Universe
The MCU has been running since 2008. As of this writing there are 20 movies in the MCU with more on the way and I don’t even know how many short films and episodes of various TV shows.
Now sure, the movies are mostly self-contained and don’t require you to check out any of the other stuff. The same is true of the Netflix MCU TV shows
True but the other TV shows (like the long running Agents of SHIELD) aren’t so self contained. The Netflix shows do trade off of events in other Netflix shows. And even if you confine it to the movies you still have those 20 movies.
And sorry but if you wanna check out the latest of the 2-3 Marvel movies out in any given year being asked to watch twenty films  is a lot of continuity to ask of someone. Far more than is reasonable and honestly for a new viewer it might as well be as intimidating as 50 years of comics.
And the harsh truth is... a lot of people just don’t do that when they go see a Marvel movie. But it’s also true that most people seem to like Marvel movies.
 How is this possible?
How could they possibly enjoy the latest instalment in a film franchise without having seen everything before?
Well this video about Avengers Assemble raises two key explanations.
The gist of things is that Avengers Assemble in part traded off of the modern way we consume media and trusted people could Google or Youtube what they needed to know to ‘get’ the movie. See the endless number of articles and videos explaining what audiences ‘need to know’ before they check out the latest MCU film or revealing telling things in movies they’ve already seen. An example would be all the articles explaining who Thanos was after his mid-credits tease in Avengers Assemble.
However the video’s other more salient point is that Avengers Assemble, like the movies leading into it and in fact the movies after it, was actually written to be accessible on it’s own.
Sure you get a more rewarding experience if you checked out everything beforehand, but it’s not necessary.
Even in a bonanza like Infinity War, in 2018 everyone is aware of who most of those characters are in the first place and even if they aren’t they know who a few of them are and can thus get invested in the movie for them.
It’s kind of like every movie is written with the belief that it’s someone’s first...which is exactly how Marvel used to write all of their comics!
Exhibit B: The DC Animated Universe
Before Marvel made film history DC made animation history by replicating the shared superhero universe of DC comics in animation.
Comprised primarily of Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, the Zeta Project, Static Shock and Justice League (with some seasons rebranded under different names and status quos) the DCAU lasted from the early 1990s until the mid 2000s with easily in excess of 100 episodes between the shows. Which doesn’t even count the tie-in comics, video games and more significantly four animated films.
All of these shared continuity in particular in the Justice League TV show where of course virtually every  DC character from earlier in the DCAU cropped up alongside a massive amount of new ones.
What made things even more complicated was that Justice League was released after Batman Beyond, a show set in the distant future of the DCAU, meaning the show was even drawing upon continuity from stories that chronologically took place way later.
Confusing right?
Well...not if you go by the ratings, critical acclaim and strong fan following.
Let me stress the DCAU predated the easier access to the internet we have today, it wasn’t until the DCAU was wrapping up that its various shows began to get complete home releases.
It is extremely unlikely that everyone or even the majority of the viewership of any given DCAU show were fully aware or up to scratch on the continuity of the DCAU as a whole.
And yet the DCAU was extremely successful.
In fact Justice League was so successful that it was renewed twice  after originally intended to wrap up the DCAU as a whole. And both attempts drew upon older continuity, especially the second of these two attempts.
Exhibit C: The market for superhero info books
Fun fact, I’ve worked for D.K. books which has made a lot of comic book based info books diving into the (mostly in-universe) history of the various characters.
The first of those books I know of was Spider-Man: the Ultimate Guide published about oh...in 2001.
It’s fourth and newly updated edition was released last year.
In fact with the surge of superhero popularity D.K. had to make more guidebooks than ever before, so many in fact that they had to drop some.
Here is some inside baseball but to capitalize upon Thor: Ragnarok there was supposed  to be an ultimate guide book all about Thor but due to producing stuff for Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, Black Panther and Justice league the project had to be dropped.
Guidebooks about individual franchises were not even the only types of info books D.K. did.
They’ve recently published what amounts to an encyclopaedia about the entire Marvel Universe since the 1940s!
And by the way, these books aren’t aimed primarily at the established/older hardcore fan.
They are aimed at a mass audience, chiefly kids who’ve maybe seen the movies, cartoons or read a little about the characters and now want to go deeper. And they are sold in general book stores as well as comic book speciality stores.
And they’ve been doing this since 2001...internationally!
So OBVIOUSLY there is thriving market for the large in depth histories of these characters. Clearly people love the idea of there being wider lore for them to explore.
It’s not even a phenomenon exclusive to comic book nerds, just ask Lord of the Rings fans!
Exhibit D: the DC Universe
If you count absolutely everything, there has been in truth at least six  different versions of the DC universe since it began in 1938.
That means on six separate occasions DC has chucked out aspects of their history and in theory made it more accessible to readers because hey, there is less history for you to read now. Their biggest attempt of recent years was in the New 52 in 2011.
And yet in general Marvel has systemically outsold DC comics and especially did so during the New 52 when the DC as whole suffered massive sales losses linked in no small part to their decision to reboot their universe and throw out the history readers had invested in.
Exhibit E: Soap operas
Soap operas that are intended to last indefinitely rarely (if ever) have facilities to enable viewers to catch up on older episodes across their massive sometimes 1000+ episode count. And even if they did such options wouldn’t have existed before the 21st century when DVDs and digital media and recordable TV isn’t what it is today.
Yet these soap opera kept running and running and running sometimes for decades?
How? They couldn’t have maintained the same viewership across that entire time.
Could it be that the new viewers of these soap operas just tuned in and rolled with it/the soap opera were written in a relatively accessible way so that they continued the ongoing plots whilst allowing new viewers to jump on ship at any time?
 Exhibit F: The 1980s-1990s
The notion of Marvel’s long continuity being a bad thing, of being a problem hampering them is dependent upon the idea that after a point there is just too much  history in the way of readers to jump on board. The Marvel Universe has lasted since 1961 after all*.
The foolishness in this mentality is that it wholly fails to recognize that catching up on and keeping up with even 20-25 years worth of comic book history is such a daunting task that it might as well be 55 years!
And yet in the 1980-early 1990s the comic book industry was over all healthier than it is now despite there already being a huge amount of history and lore to most Marvel characters.
In fact easily the most popular Marvel franchise of the 1990s was the X-Men which was THE most complicated and convoluted franchise Marvel had at the time.
Compounding the challenge new fans allegedly had to face was the fact that reprints, trades, info books and internet based resources to help them catch up or learn the wider histories either didn’t exist or weren’t what they are now.
There comes a point when getting a grip on 55 years of history when you have endless resources to help you do that and instant access to those stories on your phone  is infinitely easier trying that with 20-25 years of history when you have next to nothing.
But there were MORE comic book readers in the 1980s-1990s than now and they were able to jump into the long running narratives decades into their histories.
How is this possible?
Because back then Marvel practiced a mantra preached by Stan Lee himself.
Every comic is someone’s first.
So every comic pushed the characters stories on but also made sure they invited new readers along for the ride too.
 Exhibit G: Myself
When I was 12 I began watching the Justice League cartoon show and fell in love with all those characters, only slowly realizing that the Superman and Batman of this show were the same ones I’d seen on Batman the Animated Series and those 6 episodes of Superman I’d seen years ago. I didn’t even know who Darkseid and Brainiac were? It didn’t matter they were clearly big deal bad guys and I loved their 2 episodes in Justice League. I loved Justice League Unlimited even more even though I didn’t realize it was capitalizing upon plot threads set up in yet more Superman episodes I’d never seen.
When I was 11 one of my best friends who was nowhere near as much into comic books as I was showed me his new book. Spider-Man the Ultimate Guide. In it was pages and pages about Spider-Man, his powers, his costumes, his friends, his foes and his history over all. I needed my own copy of that book and re-read it multiple times because wow I didn’t know Spider-Man was once buried alive and there was a Spider-Man in the future and this one time Spider-Man battled the Juggernaut and it was awesome and this other time Spider-Man turned into the Lizard and the Hulk!
When I was 10 I read my first ever Spider-Man comic book and began following the character religiously.
This comic book was Peter Parker: Spider-Man #75.
This was the very last part of the very last story arc in the single most convoluted Spider-Man story of all time, the Clone Saga, with even that one issue drawing upon and referencing continuity from 27 years earlier!
And yet it hooked me.
All those things hooked me.
Because it’s not about how much continuity you have.
It’s about how you choose to use it or not use it when crafting a compelling story.

Of course, covering different chapters of a character's life in a two-hour and 20-minute movie is not always easy. Regardless, Cherry now joins a long list of films highlighting hardship, whether it be coping with war or trying to overcome addiction. Several other movies cover aspects of a difficult life, similar to Cherry's, and are worth taking the time to watch.

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 7/28/17
One of the best discoveries I’ve made has been the digital subchannel Heroes & Icons. If you’re a cord cutter, then get yourself an antenna and check this thing out. My favorite aspect of it, however, is the fact that it runs a 5-hour Star Trek block six nights a week. Star Trek at 8, Star Trek: The Next Generation at 9, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at 10, Star Trek: Voyager at 11, and Enterprise at 12. Sunday through Friday. And on Sundays they actually kick things off with Star Trek: The Animated Series at 7. I’ve pretty much watched nothing but Star Trek for the past 2 weeks. I’ve been reacquainted with favorite episodes, like TNG‘s “Chain of Command” and DS9‘s “Far Beyond the Stars”. I’ve discovered some hidden gems, like TOS‘s ” The Cloud Minders”. I’ve even discovered that I don’t hate Voyager or Enterprise as much as I thought I did.
I don’t talk about this too much, but the first 12 years or so of my life were comprised of pretty much NOTHING but Star Trek. From 1987-94, my favorite show on television was The Next Generation. When DS9 debuted, I expected it to continue my love affair, but it felt too preachy with its Space Holocaust allegory. It was in the later seasons, once the Dominion War began, that it actually ensconced itself as my favorite iteration of the franchise. By the time Voyager debuted, I had discovered comics, and they became my new mistress. While I watched about 4 hours of TNG a day in high school (Channel 20 REALLY loved playing TNG), my heart didn’t have room in it for a new Trek, so I “No time for love, Dr. Jones”‘ed Captain Janeway and her crew. Enterprise debuted when I was in college, and  I was simply too busy worried about other shit to watch Captain Quantum Leap and his crew. Plus, due to some kind of contractual fallout, Ithaca didn’t get UPN. So, since the finale of DS9, my Trekkerdom lay dormant.
But when I say “I’ve forgotten more than you’ll ever know”, that’s primarily about Star Trek. I had several editions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia, I had the Technical Manual, the Technical Journal, the Star Trek Chronology. All of it. I’ve got the figures, and the role play toys. I even created my own uniform for Halloween back in the 90s. I was all Trek, 24/7, and you couldn’t tell me shit. Over time, though, that trivia got overwritten by X-Men 1st appearance notations and the names of TNBC actresses. What I’m saying, though, is that Heroes & Icons brought it all rushing back. It’s like I’m 15 again, blowing the evening watching Star Trek episodes I’ve already seen hundreds of times already. It’s also given me new perspectives on things that completely went over my head when I was younger. For example, Sisko is the Bajorans’ Space Jesus, and that’s pretty heavy. Even he doesn’t believe it, but in the end, yup it turns out he’s Space Jesus. I’ve also got thoughts on the current state of the franchise, too.
youtube
At SDCC, we got the above trailer for Star Trek: Discovery, which will air in North America on CBS All Access (yes, Dean, I know you’ll say All Anal Access because it sucks that we have to subscribe to another service just to watch this thing). I had no interest in this show because everything I heard about it didn’t sound like Star Trek. Now, though, the more they try to sell it as a bunch of new ideas, the more it just sounds like DS9. It’s gonna be Trek with interpersonal conflict. Great. I can get down with that. Its aesthetic seems more like late-era Stargate than Trek, though – especially those Klingon designs. There are certain things, though, that still feel like they miss the mark.
Take for example the fact that the show will feature the first same-sex couple on a Star Trek series, played by Rent‘s Anthony Rapp and My So Called Life‘s Wilson Cruz. Yeah, I get that representation is important, but it bothers me that this is being done in a prequel series, set before the events of the original Star Trek. With the exception of Enterprise, this is the series that takes place the closest to our timeline, so it’s really not much of a leap to think that same-sex couples exist. Ya know what would’ve meant more to me (as a straight, cis male who really doesn’t have a dog in the race but is still opinionated)? If the show had actually been a post-Dominion War, sequel series to TNG/DS9/Voyager, and it featured a same-sex couple. Science fiction tends to go 2 ways: it’s either dystopian or it’s about HOPE. As it stands, from what we’ve seen, same-sex couples are pretty much nonexistent in the 24th century. Yeah, I’m sure they exist, but we never saw them. It seems like it would be a testament to how enduring they are to see them that far in the future as opposed to just a couple of hundred years from now, when Discovery is set.
I could also be politicizing this for my own agenda, as I really want to know what happened after the war ended. Sure, there are books and stuff, but those things aren’t canon. I feel there are so many stories to tell from that era, and I’d love to see the franchise move forward instead of dance between the raindrops of continuity in the past. It feels like they’re stalling, which is how it felt with Enterprise and even the Kelvin movies. Someone, somewhere out there has got to have a great idea as to how to move the franchise forward and I hope CBS/Paramount finds them sooner rather than later.
SDCC Bullet Points
The bulk of San Diego Comic Con took place over the weekend, and here’s some stuff that debuted:
Michelle Pfeiffer is Hank Pym’s lost wife, Janet Van Dyne, in Ant-Man and The Wasp
The Captain Marvel film will be set in the 90s, and introduce the Skrulls to the MCU. Oh, and Nick Fury will have 2 eyes
youtube
We got this trailer for Ready Player One, which was hella polarizing. It seems a lot of folks hated the book on which it’s based. If you ask me, it just looks like a cinematic version of this commercial:
youtube
Comic creator Frank Miller, of 300 and Sin City fame, is writing a Superman: Year One story with art from John Romita Jr. Nothing about that sentence makes me want to open my wallet.
youtube
We got a new trailer for X-Men spinoff, The Gifted. I’m actually surprised they used established mutants like Polaris and Thunderbird. And is that actually Fenris?! I want to like this, but it just looks so…Fox.
youtube
We got a new trailer for The Defenders on Netflix. I get that this is the culmination of all the Marvel Netflix shows, but it didn’t do much for me since I’ve only seen 2 out of 5 seasons so far. There’s no way I’ll get caught up by this premiere date, but I’m sure it’ll mean more to me once I’m up to date. Kinda tired of the hallway fight trope, though.
youtube
Legends of Tomorrow is such a fun show. It started kinda dry, but got so much better last year. It reminds me of a syndicated Saturday afternoon show, but in a good way.

This Justice League trailer did very little for me. It’s like, sure, Wonder Woman’s cool, but we JUST saw her. Aquaman seems cool, but he’s not really “Aquaman”. I’ll see it, but I ain’t looking forward to it. No, for me, November belongs to:

Things You Might Have Missed This Week
We’ll have to wait a bit longer for our annual dose of Abbi and Ilana, as Comedy Central has moved the Broad City season 4 premiere from August 23rd to September 13th
A few months ago, it was reported that Amy Schumer would be starring in a Barbie movie. Well, I made fun of that, she blocked me on Twitter, and then eventually dropped out of the role. Now they’re reporting that Anne Hathaway is up for the role, which is somehow more bewildering than the Schumer choice…
Justin Bieber cancelled the rest of his Purpose world tour because he was “committing his life to Christ”. This pissed off his crew, as they were left without jobs. He, then, proceeded to run over a paparazzo with his truck while leaving church. I swear, you can’t make this shit up!
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos has replaced Bill Gates as the richest man in the world.
Beginning September 29th, Hulu will begin streaming the Warner Bros shows that comprised ABC’s TGIF lineup, including Perfect Strangers, Family Matters, Full House, Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step. Meanwhile, Netflix is feverishly developing Perfecter Strangers, Family Still Matters, Chillin’ With Mr. Cooper, and Step By Step By Step.
I haven’t seen a non-country music video in years, but apparently they still make them, as Katy Perry will host the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards
Speaking of the VMAs, following the lead of the MTV Movie Awards, they’re doing away with the gendered categories Best Male/Best Female Artist, to be replaced by Artist of the Year. Also, in a bit of pandering,  they’ve created the Best Fight Against the System, for those artists who have called for folks to #RESIST and all that.
Though I felt its farcical nature wore a bit thin during its first season, TBS’s Angie Tribeca has been renewed for season 4.
Smallville‘s Tom Welling is joining Fox’s Lucifer and *yawn* that’s really all there is to say about that.
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the animated series Disenchantment from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. It will features the voices of Nat Faxon, Eric Andre, and Abbi Jacobson. Apparently it’s about elves and trolls and shit. Not really my bag, baby.
Person of Interest‘s Michael Emerson has been cast in a mysterious role for Arrow‘s 6th season. So, he’s probably Deathstroke’s accountant or something.
Because SyFy just doesn’t care anymore, and because they need something to air between Sharknados, Wynonna Earp has been renewed for a 3rd season.
The Wonder Woman sequel has a release date of December 13th, 2019
Apple discontinued the iPod Nano and Shuffle models, as they are the last remaining models that cannot run iOS apps.
Current Superman Henry Cavill grew a mustache for his role in Mission Impossible 37: Mission Harder, which will have to be digitally removed for Justice League reshoots. Ya know, the movie where he’s supposed to be dead, but is actually the worst kept secret in Hollywood.
Lionel Richie and Charlie Puth are in talks to join ABC’s American Idol reboot as judges. Yeah, that’s funny. Unless they’re coaching the contestants on how to get caught cheating while dancing on the ceiling, I’m not sure what Richie’s old ass brings to the table. And Puth is simply too new to be judging anybody.
New James Bond film in 2019. Nobody knows who’s playing him or directing the thing, but it’s coming. Yesiree, Bob!
Since they’re handing out cinematic universes like chicken samples at a food court, the John Wick universe will be expanded by the female-focused film, Ballerina.
Michael Phelps raced a CGI shark and people felt betrayed. He’s the friggin’ son of Poseidon! He can’t race ACTUAL sharks! There would be civil unrest beneath the surface!
With DC being the political capital of the country, it’s hard for a news person to stand out because the place is crawling with them. That wasn’t true, however, for Jim Vance. Everyone knew him and the man was an institution. Coming to NBC4 in 1969, he was one of the first Black anchors in a major news market. He anchored for over 4 decades, ingraining himself into the families of those who watched him.
When I was a toddler, I was really into the local news (I’ve always said I’m regressing as I get older), and I could name every anchor on every local newscast. And this was a golden age of DC news. You had the great Glenn Brenner, you had Maury Povich before he became a talk show host, and you had Vance. There was something about him that made him seem like your aunt’s cool boyfriend. He was an old man with a hoop earring. We used to laugh about it, but secretly I was hating because I knew I’d never be able to pull that off at his age. He rode motorcycles and laughed inappropriately at news stories he found funny. He was a guy who made you glad to watch the news, especially as the cries of Fake News! grew louder.
Back in May, Vance announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and it advanced rather quickly. He passed away last Saturday morning, and the announcement touched all corners of the DC area (no, I’m not calling it the DMV!). It was touching to see all of the tributes to him on the local stations, from those who were colleagues and competitors. Last Saturday night, News4 spent the entire 11 PM news talking about Vance and what he meant to DC. This might sound crazy, but it was so refreshing to watch the news without a single drop of actual news being reported. No Trump b.s., no local murders, not even a weather report. Just 30 minutes about a man who we basically grew up with in our homes. I always kinda took him for granted because you just expected he would be there every evening, but I’ve certainly missed him since he’s gone. I know he won’t mean much to those of you outside the DC viewing area, but believe me when I say that everybody here knew who Jim Vance was, and we’re all going to miss him in one way or another. For that reason, Jim Vance had the West Life Ever.
