[The following ask is just an attempt on my, Winter's, part to exploit a quirk in tumblr's code that keeps formatting from copy/pasted items when answering an ask on desktop as opposed to making a text post.]

MC is a Phoenix and Child of a Famous Magic User

A slightly modified request fill for @guardianoftheunderworld090! This ended up getting away from me a bit, and by a bit I mean a lot so uhhh Oops! Because of that, I didn’t end up doing the dateables+Luke, so apologies! But this is already probably wayyyyy off from the original request anyway.

Content Warnings: Temporary character death, spoilers for Lesson 16+, brief implication of immolation (but not really bc, y’know, phoenix), mild-to-moderate blood and injuries/violence

As soon as they learned their name, everyone knew of MC. While not quite on Solomon or the great witch Maddi’s level, their parents had made quite the name for themselves in the magical community. Their pre-existing knowledge of magic and the supernatural was therefore completely expected.

Less so was what happened when they died.

Mammon had been cradling their body when it happened, still too stunned to react to his smug younger brother gloating about taking out such a fragile, weak creature. The entire House of Lamentation was in shock: MC, the human they had come to cherish, was bleeding out right in front of their eyes and there was nothing they could do to stop it.

The Avatar of Greed’s breath hitched as he felt their pulse fade, watched the rise and fall of their chest cease…

And then he screamed as MC’s body burst into flames. They were scorching hot, but left no marks on him nor the surrounding area. On instinct, Beelzebub darted forward to pull Mammon away from the inferno, his protests weakened by surprise and grief. Belphegor was knocked backwards off his feet by the force of the flames, and they all watched as the fire raged on, until it began to take on a recognizable shape.

Not of MC, but of a brightly coloured flaming bird.

The phoenix cocked its head to the side, as though assessing its surroundings, eyes passing over each of the frozen brothers before rounding on Belphegor. It shrieked, puffed up feathers interspersed with jets of flame, and charged the youngest with its sharp beak and talons bared.

And suddenly it was no longer a bird.

“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!” MC yelled as they continued to slash at Belphie. A large pair of bright flaming wings arched behind their back, threatening to torch anything they touched. “I LITERALLY RISKED THE WRATH OF LUCIFER FOR WEEKS TO HELP YOUR SORRY ASS GET OUT OF THAT ATTIC AND THIS IS HOW YOU THANK ME?! WITH MURDER?!”

Blood pooled in Belphie’s mouth from a particularly nasty slash across his lip. He spit to the side before replying, “In my defense, most people stay dead when you kill them!”

“THAT’S ALL YOU HAVE TO—”

“...MC?” Levi said, voice small. “I-Is that really you…?” His tail swished behind him anxiously.

MC turned their attention to the rest of the brothers (one set of talons still embedded in Belphie’s leg, in case he had thoughts of running).

Beel was stock still, eyes pointed ahead but staring at something beyond the room. Asmo was crying silently, though his expression was neutral and wide eyed. The gears in Satan’s head were visibly turning even as he shredded the sleeves of his shirt with his claws. Mammon was misty eyed, with such an open expression of love and want and hurt that it made them want to cry as well. And Lucifer… The Avatar of Pride’s usual mask of stony superiority had crumbled into something lost and broken.

They looked back to Belphegor, who clutched at his leg, his own tears threatening to spill from his eyes. They slowly remove their talons from his leg and face the group, folding their wings inward until they regain their humanoid form.

“I guess I have a bit of explaining to do, huh.”

Lucifer

Too many things have happened so fast, he doesn’t even know how to respond.

Not only has MC apparently been having secret meetings with Belphegor, not only are the pacts they’ve made with his brothers just tools to free him, not only did Belphegor then betray them and attempt to kill them, but they’re also… A phoenix?!

Distantly, hysterically, he thinks, how in the three realms is that not on their file?

“Oh, I’m also not technically from this timel-”

Lucifer shushes them. He can’t deal with any other reveals right now.

Once… everything is dealt with, he allows himself to be curious about MC’s origins.

Have they always been this way? Were they adopted by their parents, a familiar given human form, or had something gone wrong one day with a spell?

He’ll never ask them though. He knows origins can be touchy subjects.

He grounds himself in the practical. Does MC know how to control their abilities? Are their needs being met? Are there any additional accommodations they require?

Sometimes, when their wings are out, he can’t help but be reminded of the similarly fiery wings of the seraphim from home the Celestial Realm and feel nostalgic.

His more possessive side also relishes the fact that they share a connection through association with birds, especially considering how some varieties of phoenixes tend to resemble peacocks.

It must be difficult for them to preen those large wings, do they need any help? No, it’s not that he wants to, don’t be ridiculous. But if they ever want his help...

Mammon

Once the initial shock of “holy shit the love of my life just BURST INTO FLAMES IN MY ARMS” fades, he’s just happy MC’s alive and well.

But he does put on a front of being upset that they never told him about their nature.

“Stupid hu— uhhh, phoenix, I worried for nothin’! Wait, no, I wasn’t worried at all—”

“Sure you weren’t,” MC retorts with a smile.

Seriously though, why didn’t they tell him? He’s their guardian, their First, he should know these things!

Do they think he’ll… try and take advantage of them because of their powers? He’d never!

Okay, maybe when they first met he might have considered it, but not now! Not now that he…

One night, Mammon and MC are up late watching some terrible Devildom romcom. MC has long since fallen asleep, and one of their enormous wings is draped over Mammon, pinning him in place.

The flames interspersed amongst their feathers are short and glow only dimly, like dying embers. Occasionally, a few will flare slightly or twitch as though a breeze has blown by.

“...I was really scared, you know,” he murmurs to their sleeping form. “I really thought you were gone. And I realized at that moment that I… I can’t lose you. I love you so much MC. You’re worth more to me than anything else in the Devildom, than anything in all the three realms. Please don’t scare me like that ever again…”

MC doesn’t stir, but the flames on their wing follow Mammon’s hand as he pets the warm feathers. They’re only pleasantly warm, with a smooth, silky texture to them.

He snuggles closer to them and drifts off himself, comforted by the heat of their body, human and avian anatomy alike.

Leviathan

Levi cannot believe his luck. He finally gets himself a friend he can really trust, and then his younger brother (who was trapped in an attic by the way, NOT in the human world like Lucifer said, because oh yeah, also Lucifer’s a liar) kills them, and now they’re—

It’s too much to process at once. All he can latch onto is that’s them, right? That’s really his MC, his Henry, the one person outside of his family who doesn’t dismiss him as some gross shut-in?

Once he’s assured himself that they’re safe, he’s immediately hit with the rest of the surprises to process. He hugs MC tightly against himself, whether to protect them from Belphegor or himself from… everything, is anyone’s guess.

It takes a long time for Levi’s newfound clinginess to dissipate. He refuses to let MC be alone around Belphegor under any circumstances, even if it means leaving his room more than he’s comfortable with.

In this time, he learns a lot about MC.

He learns that they seek to cool off the same way he seeks out warmth, and that this makes them excellent cuddling partners. He learns that they let out very adorable chirps of squawks when caught off guard.

He learns the hard way that a phoenix in love is a fire hazard.

But he also learns that he’d risk every item in his collection to see MC’s radiant smile.

Satan

Set the phoenix thing aside, Satan thinks to himself as he rushes over to inspect MC for injuries. Set it aside.

Once he’s sure they are unharmed, he turns his attention to Belphegor.

The Avatar of Sloth is lucky MC got to him first. Satan wouldn’t have stopped at a warning strike. Belphie knows from the murderous glare shot his way that it is only the presence of the others that’s stopping Satan from taking his revenge.

His fingers linger in their wings. MC’s feathers are all out of sorts, but there are no bald patches indicating any serious burns or other wounds. Still, Satan cards through them carefully, checking and double checking for any signs of damage. MC fidgets under his attention.

“Uh, Satan?” They’re blushing. “That kinda tickles.”

“Oh! Oh, um, sorry, I was just— you’re okay, right?”

They let out a small laugh and bop him gently with a wing. “Everything’s in working order, don’t worry.”

“That’s— Good, that’s uh, that’s great.”

“...Go ahead, you dork,” MC prompts with a smile. He blinks at them owlishly. “Ask your questions!”

He does, over the course of the next couple of weeks, in between therapeutic pranks against a certain youngest brother.

Asmodeus

As MC is born again from flame, Asmo learns the true horror of love.

He had always been the one to invoke passion in others: to seduce loyal partners and drive others mad with desire, to twist their love into lust and unleash its destructive potential. Despite this, he never really understood the feeling himself, why something as ephemeral as a feeling could drive humans to such extremes.

But seeing MC wounded and bloody, watching the light in their eyes dim, the Avatar of Lust had felt the call of blood and rage and grief and love for the first time. And watching MC dust themself off as they explain their unique heritage, Asmo realizes that those feelings would have destroyed him. He would have done anything and everything to bring MC back to him, given up any part of himself just to see them one more time.

So forgive him, MC, if his movements ever slow to a stop while preening your wings. If he sometimes stares at you with awe, or holds you tight enough to bruise.

His heart has never been anyone’s but his before, and he is so very afraid of getting burned.

Beelzebub & Belphegor

Oh this is Not bringing up good memories at all.

Something about seeing MC and Belphegor, bloody with the scent of fire and death in the air jumbles his senses and suddenly they’re not in the House of Lamentation but the battlefield and she’s been struck down, he was too slow, he chose his twin over his sister can he live with that? Can any of them? She’s falling she’s falling and he’s falling and they’re going to—

When he snaps back into awareness, Beel is restraining a hissing and spitting MC as they scratch and claw at him to get to Belphegor, the one wing Beel didn’t manage to pin down flapping about erratically.

Their movements only stop when they feel hot tears on their back. MC calms down and shifts more gently in Beelzebub’s grasp, turning to face him.

“Beel, it’s okay,” they say, cupping his face with a bloody, taloned hand. He smells the blood and lets out a sob.

Belphegor moves to comfort his twin, but MC’s wings snap open, shielding the pair in a ring of fire and feathers.

“I— I…” He can’t form the words. You died, my brother killed you, he’s here, you hurt him, why is he here, why did he hurt you, how did— “Please,” he says, finally.

MC frowns, hesitates. But slowly, they lower their wings and step aside, letting the twins reunite. As they embrace, Belphegor shoots them a look, but it’s not hateful. It’s not regretful or apologetic either, more of a profound confusion.

Despite demons’ regenerative abilities, Belphegor remains mostly bedridden for quite some time. It seems a phoenix’s wounds negate most healing factors, and the 5 pronged gash in his leg is particularly stubborn in its refusal to close. He jokes that the slow recovery must be because MC will never forgive him for what he’s done. Beel chastises him and says they’re more forgiving than he thinks.

Still, Belphie is surprised to see MC join Beel when he comes to change the youngest’s bandages. They hold out their hands, revealing 10 strange, press-on caps over their talons as they assure Belphie they won’t hurt him.

Where Beel is overly cautious and gentle, MC is practiced and efficient as they inspect, clean, and redress his wounds.

“Is this your way of apologizing?” Belphie can’t help but ask, earning him a stern glare from his twin.

“For attacking you after you killed me, not knowing it wouldn’t take? No,” they reply around a mouthful of medical tape. “It’s an excuse to talk.” They gesture for Beel to move his hand from the gauze pad so they can tape it down.

“You want to talk with your would-be murderer.” MC gathers up the garbage and old bandages to toss them in the trash.

“You’re not the first person to try, you know,” they remark as they dust off their hands.

“What?!” the twins shout in unison, Beel nearly dropping the scissors he was putting back into the first aid kit.

“I’ll tell you about it if you tell me why…” MC gestures broadly to Belphegor, “this all happened the way it did.”

This exchange of stories does not repair MC and Belphegor’s fraught relationship. That is not how wounds heal. But nevertheless, some weeks later, the House of Lamentation has a movie night. And sandwiched in the middle of the familial cuddle pile is MC, Beel, and Belphie, each tucked under one fiery wing.

#20—bandaging/stitching up an injury

Pairing: Dave York x f!reader

Warnings: fluff, description of injury, blood, needles

“Ow ow, mother fu—”

You dance on the tips of your toes, frown deepening between your brows as the blood pools in the cut across your palm and drips onto the counter. Those damn avocados—

Darting to the sink, you turn the water on and wince as the cool stream hits your cut, the clear water swirling into red as it runs down the drain. It’s deep, you realise when the blood continues to run from the wound.

Leave it to you to potentially ruin date night with a trip to the ER.

“Dave?”

You feel his presence before you see him, his familiar air seeping into the space and curling around you. His chest presses into your back and he makes a low noise at your cut, hands coming up to gently cup your own under the water.

“This needs stitches.”

“I thought so.” You sigh, “I’ll get my bag—”

“No, just come to the bathroom. I’ve got everything.” He flicks the water off and reaches for the hand towel, wrapping it tightly around your hand.

“For stitches? I love you, Dave, but you’re no doctor—”

He chuckles against your ear, kissing your cheek softly. “Trust me. It’s not my first time.”

He really did have everything. Most would have a small first aid kit—a couple of bandages, some saline maybe… but Dave? He had a damn pharmacy in his bathroom cupboard. Vials of whatever concoction the little labels read organised in a container, a variety of gauze and wound coverings, bandages and syringes and needles—

“David?”

His eyes flash to yours, his brow quirking in question. He’s gentle as he cleans the wound, incredibly clinical in his movements and care.

“Why do you have all of this?”

“I hate hospitals. Sometimes things happen, and I like to be prepared.”

“Are you that clumsy?” You struggle to believe it—though you had only been dating six months, he just didn’t seem like the type. He was always so sure of everything, including his footing and surroundings. He never trips or anything, unlike you and your inability to walk safely across a flat surface.

He shrugs lightly, lips twitching at the corners as he snaps gloves onto his hands. “Something like that.”

You shift uneasily when he reaches for a vial, holding it to the light as he pulls the clear liquid into a syringe with narrowed eyes, lips pursed in focus. This is a bad idea...

“I don’t know about this—”

“Look at me.”

You do instantly, eyes wide with your nerves swimming clearly through them meeting his determined dark ones. Were you shaking? Is it cold? Shock, you realise numbly.

“I would never do anything that could cause you harm, do you understand?”

You swallow, tongue running along your suddenly dry lips before nodding hurriedly.

“I’ve had training, and I know what I’m doing. Now close your eyes, baby—I’ve got you. I promise.”

And he did. He worked quicker than you expected, fingers moving efficiently and fixing up the slice on your palm in seemingly no time at all. His few stitches were clean, and incredibly neat—damn near professional. You blink in surprise, reaching to poke at the tender flesh before his hand slaps your curious one away, shooting you a playful scowl.

“Not bad, Doctor.” You smile, keeping your hand still as he tightly wraps a clean white bandage around it. He grins, pressing a soft kiss to where the cut was covered, thumbs soft as they brush over your fingers.

“You’ve been an excellent patient. How about ice cream for dinner?”

“Chocolate chip?”

He snorts, helping you stand. “Like I’d have any other kind.”

In the Name of Science: Chapter 6

Fandom: Sonic Movie (2020)

Rating: T for unethical experimentation, implied violence and gore, and implied torture

Summary: Tom and Maddie didn’t make it in time to rescue Sonic from Robotnik. Hopefully it’s not too late to save him now. Unfortunately, hope is hard to come by in the labs of the mad doctor himself.

Chapter Warnings: needles, drugging, discussion of anatomy and light gore

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, M.D. Log 6

Full physical recovery has been confirmed. Complete examination and analysis of anatomy now underway.

Robotnik is rhapsodic. His subject is finally healthy – well, physically healthy, at least – and they can move onto Phase Two of his deconstruction of the alien’s everything.

With the pesky rebellious flame quelled for the time being, he taps his palm twice and the robots carry Sonic over to a large MRI machine; the very machine he’d asked Agent Stone about, upon his arrival here. The hedgehog eyes it warily. Robotnik would scoff at the continued display of complete and utter ignorance, but he’s in too good a mood to care enough to even react.

“Stone!” He calls out loud. “Any day now!”

“Sorry doctor, coming doctor!” The assistant responds with cheer, hurrying through the opposite door with a stainless-steel tray in his hands. It holds several medical syringes as well as a variety of bottled liquids, all marked clearly and carefully.

“Is that everything I asked for?”

“Yes sir! I have anesthetics of multiple kinds for general, local, and regional anesthesia. Which one would you like me to prepare?”

“Let’s get some of the stronger stuff going first,” the mad scientist says, watching how Sonic’s breathing has picked up minutely at the sight of the tray and its contents. “Don’t want our evolutionary miracle ‘running out’ on us right when we’re just getting started, do we?”

Agent Stone giggles like it’s the funniest thing he’s heard all day as he sets the tray on a table and begins filling a syringe with propofol. Robotnik smirks and turns to his captive, who has started wriggling at his restraints again in a panic.

“Remember when I said I could keep you asleep all this time, and I’ve chosen not to thanks to my plethora of patience?” The man asks, placing his pen back on Sonic’s chest. The hedgehog stops his movements only to stare at the pen like it’s going to bite him. His ears are alert and facing Robotnik, signaling that he has his full attention.

Just as it should be.

“I may have fibbed just a teensy bit. You see, I want to have the whole picture of what your body looks like, inside and out, and I can finally get that now that your injuries won’t potentially muddle up the results. Unfortunately, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans can’t be done while metal is present on the object being scanned.”

He makes a show of tapping his pen against one of Sonic’s wrist restraints. The teen’s mouth thins into a grimace.

“And since you’ve proven from the very beginning that you can’t be trusted to obey as expected quite yet, I’ve decided to take some precautions.”

Stone squirts a bit of liquid out of the syringe, drawing Sonic’s wide gaze at the action. Robotnik’s upper lip curls and he grabs the hedgehog at his jaw, forcing his attention back on the doctor.

“Didn’t anyone ever teach you it’s rude to ignore someone when they’re directly speaking to you? Oh, right, of course no one did.”

The scientist holds out his unoccupied hand without turning away from his subject. Stone gives him the syringe, and he flips it around expertly so that it’s in a prime position to be used.

“W-Wait! Wait,” the hedgehog gasps, his chin still in Robotnik’s iron grip. “I won’t run!”

His captor raises an eyebrow even as he tilts Sonic’s head to the side, exposing his neck. “You won’t run?”

“Cross my heart! I’ll be still as a statue, slow as a sloth, subsent – subservent…uh.”

“Subservient?” Stone supplies helpfully.

“Yeah that! I’ll be the most of that that anyone’s ever been! Honest!”

“Oh, of course you will.” Robotnik lifts the syringe so that he can observe the opaque white fluid inside through the fluorescent lights of the lab. “You’ll lie perfectly still for upwards of two hours, doing absolutely nothing with nothing restraining you, and when we’re done, you’ll let me snap those cuffs and collar back on without resistance until we repeat the process all over with another scan.”

He gives the teen a flat, unimpressed look. Sonic tries to smile innocently back. It comes out sheepish and nervous.

“That’s what I thought. Stone, hold his head exactly like this while I find the jugular vein.”

“Yessir.”

The little alien hisses and squirms as the scientist presses his gloved finger against his neck, and desperate babbling fills the space between them.

“I’m a hedgehog of my word, you know, I would never ever break a promise I make. Ask anyone! Crazy Carl or Donut Lord or that skunk I ran into two years ago. I promised him I’d never do it again and I didn’t, I haven’t even seen the guy since then, you should call him up if you want proof of my –”

Robotnik finds the spot. He pricks it with the syringe. Sonic’s babbling reaches a higher pitch.

“My! Honesty! Let’s talk about this, no reason to be hasty! You know I never thought I’d hear those – those words come out…of my mouth, but you know what…they say…about desperate measures….”

His speech slows and slurs, and his eyelids grow heavy as the drug starts pumping through his body at a much faster rate than any human or animal. The doctor watches with unadulterated fascination.

It’s barely twenty seconds before the hedgehog is out like a light. He mumbles nonsense in his sleep as Stone removes the collar from around his neck and the robots lie him down on the MRI’s bench. A few well-placed inputs of Robotnik’s glove remote makes the restraints at his wrists and ankles release with a solid click.

Another press of a button, and the machine whirls to life, pulling the limp teen into the cramped round space to document the inner workings of his tiny body.

It’s almost an hour of total silence between the scientist and his assistant as they watch image files start to fill the computer screen connected to the MRI. Both are riveted by every millimeter of scan that comes through. The teen’s anatomy almost perfectly resembles that of a human, barring his skeletal structure, and already Robotnik’s mind is whirring with new things to examine, aspects to probe, and questions to answer about this remarkable little creature in his possession. And that’s not even considering the tests involving the limits of his strength, speed, and generation of energy.

Oh, it’s going to be so much fun.

The MRI finishes its process, and the doctor is quick to move onto new analyses while his subject is still unconscious and compliant. They set the hedgehog onto an examination table, lock his restraints back into place so that he can’t sit up even if he was to wake up, and Stone wheels in a cart of empty vials and surgical tools.

All the things he’d painstakingly waited to pull from the alien are now being painstakingly pulled. Skin samples; muscle samples; organs; bone and bone marrow; another large sample of blood. Anything and everything is fair game as Robotnik works his way through Sonic’s anatomy one section at a time. He’s careful not to take much of any singular sample – the purpose of this is examination and study, not debilitation, and he doesn’t want to have to wait too long to move onto all the other exciting things he has planned that will require his captive to be at full health to give accurate readings.

The teen himself remains comatose during the entire procedure, although his face twists whenever a particularly invasive cut is made, minimal as it is. At a single hand signal, Agent Stone injects another dose of propofol and the expressions of pain smooth out.

Half the day has passed by the time Robotnik finishes stitching up the last incision he’s made and disinfecting the shaved area. They litter the hedgehog’s body top to bottom; tiny patches of shaved fur and precisely-sutured incisions that make him look more like Frankenstein’s monster than the healthy thing he’d started out as just this morning.

The scientist wipes his brow as Stone takes the cart away to preserve the samples for analysis and clean all the tools he’d used. He leans his forearms on the metal table beside Sonic’s head, watching in fascination when the alien’s left ear twitches subconsciously at the stimulus.

He drops his own head, leaving only an inch or two between them, and takes in every detail of the hedgehog’s face as though burning it into his memory.

Slowly, his lips curl back into a terrible grin.

A/N: I've been sitting on the first half of this chapter for almost a month now; partially cause of irl things changing (for the good) and keeping me busy, and partially cause I was debating how explicit I wanted to get with some of the descriptions in the latter half.

I'll never make it so heavy that it warrants an M rating, but T can still push the limit when it comes to gore-type stuff, and I'm trying to keep the balance between realistic procedure description and not squicking all of you out too hard, either.

Found Families - Home is Where the Hart is - Chapter Fifteen

I have returned! I’m so sorry this has taken me so long to update but I hope to continue with more regular updates though I am currently in my final year of high school and going through the process of applying to university which is honestly terrifying but I love writing this series and I want to see it through.This is a final chapter of the first act and I was planning on taking a break to wrote on some other things before starting act two but I think I have had a long enough break, with how long it took me to write this chapter, so I hope for the next chapter to be written and posted by the end of the October Holidays. I want to thank all of you who have stuck with this series and have continued to send me requests and ask questions about it, I love talking to you all and I hope you continue to enjoy it. Logan had to stay in the hospital for three days following the incident which was rather boring, since Patton had to leave after the first night because of work and then he was left alone. Doctor Hastings, accompanied by a nurse came in every hour or so to monitor his vitals, administer more pain-killers and bring himself something to eat which he promptly ate half of before discarding the rest when they left. He had his clothes returned to him and with them the fidget cube Virgil had gifted him, which he had hidden away in the pocket of his trousers and was glad to have it given back to him. It acted as a pleasant distraction until he drifted off to sleep again.

Logan continued on like this. He would sleep, eat, participate in brief conversations with doctors and nurses who visited his room and wait for Patton to return. Which he did, a few times over the next couple of days, Logan was stuck in his hospital bed. Patton would come and sit by his bedside for an hour or two and he would talk. He would talk about everything and anything, his job, a funny conversation he had, a cute cat he saw on the street and wanted to pet but he couldn’t because he hadn’t taken his allergy medication. And Logan would listen, far to exhausted to add much to the conversation but Patton seemed to understand and didn’t force him to talk, claiming ‘he could talk enough for the both of them’. When Maggie eventually visited, he discovered she hadn’t quit but had confronted Madame Claire regarding the bruises she had seen on Logan’s wrists and in return Madame Claire had fired her and lied to Logan. She hadn’t left him.

“The Police arrived just after you and Patton left for the hospital, they arrested Madame Claire. They arrested her Logan. She’s gone and she won’t be able to hurt you or anyone else ever again,” Maggie said holding a pile of Police reports and papers in her hands.

“There were others?” Logan asked. Perhaps it was rather naive to assume he was the only one Madame Claire targeted, as the Orphanage was full of potential victims.

“Unfortunately yes, none as severely but the majority of the children had experience some sort of physical abuse by her hand at some point,” Maggie explained. That made sense, it wasn’t uncommon to see bruises on arms and everyone possessed a shared fear of Madame Claire.

“I see,” Logan replied. “What happens now?.

“Well, the Police agreed it would be too difficult to transfer all of you. So, we are working to relinquish the ownership of the Orphanage…to me,” Maggie exclaimed with a wide smile, lighting up her entire face.

“You, you will be the head of the Orphanage?” Logan questioned almost disbelieving her story.

“Yup and I promise you Logan, I won’t let anything like this ever happen to you or anyone else ever again,” Maggie said resting a hand on Logan’s thigh, a top the thin hospital blanket keeping him warm.

“I thought…I thought you left me,” Logan admitted internally cursing himself when his voice broke and his eyes stung with unshed tears.

“Oh Logan, I will never leave you. Circumstances may change and we may be apart but I promise you I will never leave you,” Maggie assured taking Logan’s hands into her own, squeezing them tightly which Logan returned. Maggie had been a constant in Logan’s life for many years and now he couldn’t imagine living life without her, their debates about books, her stream of advice, her teaching him to play card games and him desperately attempting to figure out a strategy to beat her. “Now, I have a surprise for you,”.

“TADA!” Maggie exclaimed pulling out a book from her bag. His book to be exact, ‘The Murder of Rodger Ackroyd’, which he had already read a total of three times already but every time he looked upon it’s pages he was reminded of his day out with Patton. Scouring the entire book-store, listening to his passion-fuelled rambling about space, building a shy bond of trust between each other. Logan wanted to go back to that day, repeat it over and over again, never returning to his present self. He felt hallow, empty. His relationship with Patton had changed. Cracked by Madame Claire’s attempt to tarnish Logan’s trust in him, in order to have greater control…just like his parents.

It was Logan’s fault too. If he wasn’t so weak, so fuelled by emotions. Perhaps he could have prevented all of this. He had caused Patton and his family so much trouble and pain. Maybe it would have been better if he hadn’t met Patton at all. Patton could have met another child, a child much less difficult and troublesome, a child Patton could love unconditional and without consequences. A child not like Logan. Too aloof, too robotic, simultaneously too much and not enough. Not worthy of love, to be loved. He didn’t deserve it.

Detective Hastings or Simon as he insisted Logan call him, also visited, giving him updates in regards to the case, asking follow-up questions about his experiences or to simply check up on him. Simon was an interesting person, with an interesting career. He shared stories of his cases, most sounding like the plots of his favourites crime and mystery novels, including the time he got kidnapped which sounded more dramatic then it actually was. Doctor Hastings or Dane sometimes joined in on these discussions when he wasn’t busy with other patients, softly giggling behind his hand or rolling his eyes at an over-exaggeration on Simon’s part. It was nice. It added some variety to what would have otherwise been an awfully boring experience but he had to go back.

On the third and final day of Logan’s hospital stay, before Maggie came to collect him, Dane visited him a last time inform him of the treatment plan he would be following which consisted of plenty rest and relaxation and basic pain-killers when necessary. He was given two wrists braces to wear for the first week - which bothered him as it made writing increasingly difficult - and his ankle fracture wasn’t severe enough to require any mobility aids and it would heal over time if he remained off of it for a short while. As for the rest of his injuries, none were as serious so did not need the same amount of care as only rest and time would allow them to repair themselves. The same information was again repeated to Maggie for her knowledge, when she arrived the retrieve him from the hospital a short while later.

“Don’t worry Doctor, this one won’t be allowed out of bed. Certainly not with me around,” Maggie said gaining a collective chuckles from both doctor and nurses as Logan rolled his eyes though he did not doubt her claim, speaking from personal experience.

“I don’t doubt it for a second Miss Blair,” Dane replied with a warm grin “Well I guess this is goodbye Logan, the team and I are sure going to miss having you around. But that does not mean you go jumping out any more windows young man,”.

“Of course, I shall not act so recklessly again,” Logan said as he collected together his minimal belongings, missing completely the shared look of sadness and concern of the medical team.

Logan settled himself into the wheelchair - as he had yet to walk distances longer than that of the length of his hospital room - and allowed himself to be wheeled out of the room, where he had spent the past three days, by a nurse as he waved to Dane and the team of nurses and Maggie walked by his side, talking animatedly about the plan for the following days but Logan was only part-way listening. He glanced around his surroundings, doctors and nurses pacing the corridors, long-terms patients talking between each other, the general hustle and bustle of the hospital filled his senses. Logan noticed Maggie had gone quiet, ceasing in her enthusiastic explanation, instead picking at the skin surrounding her nail - which were painted a bright red - a clear sign of anxiety but when Maggie caught his curious gaze she merely smile. Not her usual brilliant, bright smile, not quite reaching her eyes but immediately looked away again, continuing in her discussion with one of the nurses.

The drive back to the Orphanage was quiet, neither speaking, the silence filled with soft music emitted from the radio with Maggie’s soft humming the background and in that moment, Logan felt content, all of his previous anxieties vanishing as he used the pleasant tune to ground himself. He closed his eyes, allowing his fingertips to wander, caressing the smooth cover of his book. He had no idea what to expect from returning to the Orphanage, the place where he had been tormented for so long. Would the other children finally leave him alone? Treat him with the kindness he had been told he was starved of? Or even despite Madame Claire’s arrest and permanent removal from their lives will he still be subjected to their daily taunts? He once again banished those thoughts as they continued their drive back to the Orphanage and in no time at all they had returned.

Maggie assisted Logan out of the car, hands gentle around his shoulders and pressed against the small of his back, careful not aggravate his slowly healing bruises. He allowed her to help him despite his cheeks burning with embarrassment, knowing he would not get far without it, she carried the majority of his weight, guiding him through the courtyard and into the foyer. Behind the front desk was not Mrs Davis but another matron Logan couldn’t recall the name of, Maggie had informed him that all of the matrons had been questioned and Mrs Davis had been one of the few who had been charged along with Madame Claire for her involvement. He passed each of his fellow orphans, gone were their expressions of disgust and scorn, replaced with…sympathy…gratitude. Logan wasn’t sure, perhaps it was the shared trauma or thanks for taking the brunt of the abuse so they did not have to endure it. It was understandable.

The overwhelming exhaustion Dr Hastings had warned him of, was beginning to set in with the minimal movement from the car to the ground floor, already dreading the stairs he would inevitably to climb in order to reach his bed which he had been ordered to remain for the first few days of his recovery. Maggie must have been able to sense Logan’s mounting fatigue as she paused just before the staircase, manoeuvred herself around Logan and proceeded to lift and carry him up the stairs with frightening ease despite the squirms of protest.

“Don’t you even dare argue with me Logan,” Maggie said in a mock series tone as she tightened her grip on Logan slowing moving up the stairs towards his room.

Logan rolled his eyes but allowed Maggie to continue, knowing he wouldn’t have made it far on his own and he was begrudgingly grateful for her unprompted assistance. One flight, two flights, three flights of stairs before they reached the boys dormitory where Logan’s bed and belongings remained untouched, just as he had left them. Maggie set him down on the edge of his bed, arranged the sheets and pillows for him as he lay down, preparing to open his book before Maggie plucked it from his fingers, instead setting it on his bedside table.

“No reading tonight for you mister, I can tell you are exhausted and don’t even try to deny it, you need to rest Logan,” Maggie said sitting on the edge of Logan’s bed adjusting the covers, bringing them up to rest beneath Logan’s chin.

“I am aware and I shall, for as long as necessary,” Logan replied unconsciously pulling with covers tighter around himself for warmth, he had been feeling rather cold these days.

“Good, I think after a few days of rest you will be as good as new,” Maggie said brushing a stray lock of hair out of Logan’s face. “Patton will also be excited to see you again,”.

Patton. Yes. Patton had visited him the day before his discharge to inform him when he would next be visiting him at the orphanage, would he be returning. Patton had thought it best to allow Logan a few days to recover before and resettle before scheduling another session. At the time, Logan had agreed, the idea was sensible enough. Patton had already spent days by his bedside throughout his short stay in the hospital, he wouldn’t want to subject Patton to any more. But why did the thought of returning to the routine of his and Patton sessions unsettle him so?

“Okay, I will let you sleep, if you need anything just call for me,” Maggie said squeezing Logan’s hand once before leaving him alone with a dangerous swirl of thoughts in his head.

Patton had done so much for him. Logan had brought him into this…mess. His mess. Patton didn’t deserve anything of this. Sweet, kind, considerate Patton who deserved a child who wasn’t broken like Logan was, unable of proper affection or care, unworthy of love. This would end in heartbreak. Madame Claire’s words flooded his mind, she may have been gone but her presence was everywhere, still torturing him.

Why would Patton want someone like you?

You deserve to be alone.

You have already made things difficult for him.

You should leave before you ruin everything.

Because that is what you do, you ruin things.

You are bad, bad, bad.

Bad.

Logan did not sleep.

This pattern of thinking continued for several days, images of the impending doom plaguing Logan’s dreams and nightmares but they would always end the same. He would be alone. Trapped. Crying, screaming, calling out for someone to come and save him but nobody came. With each passing day, the day of his and Patton’s session quickly approaching and the feeling of dread sunk further into his abdomen, the incessant churning of his stomach hadn’t ceased since he returned to the orphanage and Madame Claire’s overwhelming presence hadn’t left his bedside. Constantly providing a stream of negativity into his brain, her voice reverberating against his skull whenever he rested his thoughts for a mere moments, infiltrating and staining them black with self-doubt and hatred.

It was three in the morning, along after Logan would have fallen asleep, in order to maintain a healthy sleep schedule but he could not sleep. Patton would be arriving in a matter of hours. What would he say? Logan had been in such a state for the past few times he visited. What if everything which happened at the hospital was a façade? What if he sided with Madame Claire and approved of her treatment of him? No. Patton would never do such a thing…but Logan had caused so much trouble, not only for Patton but his entire family. Consistently tearing Patton away from his job, his responsibilities, his children, to feed his own desires. What if Patton changed his mind about continuing to meet with him? Deciding after all, he was too difficult, too problematic, too broken to truly be cared for. Undeserving of love. Logan would spends the rest of his teen years trapped within these four walls. Alone. Trapped until he was ultimately tossed out onto the streets to fend for himself. Alone. He would always be…alone.

Logan’s eyes stung with tears he refused to shed as he turned over onto his side, ignoring the unbearable sting with the unwelcome movement, pressing his face deeper into his pillow in attempt to smother the circling thoughts so too allowing him a mere hour of dreamless sleep. But he would not be so fortunate.

Logan did not sleep that night.

Patton could not sleep. The excitement at the prospect of finally seeing Logan again - after nearly a week - brought about a wave of delightful sensations to incredible to ignore or dampen with attempting to sleep, though the result was not so pleasant, but nothing an extra special breakfast wouldn’t fix. He sat at the breakfast table, bouncing his thigh as he took a sip of apple juice and a large bite of his blueberry pancakes, awaiting for the arrival of his children. He hadn’t seen Logan since his stay in the hospital and he had been using Logan’s recovery time to formulate his plan. Today was the day, he finally going to officially adopt Logan. Well ask him but he was attempting to remain optimistic.

Patton had spent the last few days finalising all of the proper documents, in preparation for the big day when he would hopefully be bringing Logan home. Logan would be his son, he could hardly believe it, though he did have to agree to it first which is where Patton’s fantasy ended and reality set in. What if he didn’t agree? Patton could always continue to meet with him until a more suitable time but he did know how much more waiting he could handle with everything that had happened, now was the opportune moment to ask. He ate quickly, cleaning even quicker before setting the table in preparation for Roman and Dee’s scheduled arrival at 8:32 on the dot, followed rather begrudgingly by Virgil who would presumably be awoken by Roman’s early morning singing.

“Good morning, Padre!” Roman exclaimed as he bound down the staircase, already dressed in his all white outfit and red slash draped across his chest, Dee clinging onto to his neck still rubbing sleep out of his eyes and releasing a large yawn.

“Morning Kiddos, it is my extra special Pattoncakes on the menu for today,” Patton said watching as both boys eyes lit up as they rushed to the table and tucked into their breakfast, while Patton waited for Virgil to emerge. Which did not take long.

“Why are you all so loud” Virgil grumbled still dressed in his Nightmare before Christmas themed pyjamas - his favourite movie - as he brushed his unruly bed-head out of his eyes.

“Because Surly-Temple, it is the beginning of a new day, full of excitement and new possibilities. Some of us actually enjoy life unlike you,” Roman quipped polishing off the remainder of his pancakes.

“Now, now, boys. This is no time for bickering, I have some exciting news for you all,” Patton announced to his children, drawing their attention immediately. “I plan to ask Logan to become apart of our family,”.

The kitchen fell silent. Patton told his children little of the incident despite their incessant begging for the full story. They something bad happened and Logan ended up in the hospital, his pain and tears were near impossible to hide particularly from Virgil who had asked on several occasions to accompany him to one of his visits to the hospital. A very non-Virgil request but he was forced to refuse, fearing for Virgil’s fragile mental state, surrounded by such familiar memories of his past mirrored in Logan’s experiences. Patton had spoken very little about Logan to his children, despite in answer to their questions regarding his well-being, allowing both them and himself time to process and to make his final decision.

“Do you think he will say yes?” Roman asked a hint of hesitation present in his voice.

“I don’t know kiddo, he has been through a lot recently,” Patton wondered aloud. What if he was moving to fast? Jumping in too quickly? Without care for Logan thoughts and feelings on the matter.

Patton spiralling thoughts were immediately interrupted by a weight on his side, he shook himself out of his negative head space to see Virgil pressed into his side, forehead rested against his chest, humming vibrating throughout his ribcage, reminding his to breathe. In and out. In and out. Until the uncomfortable weight lifted, replaced by the sensation of Virgil’s warmth enveloping him.

“It will be okay, dad,” Virgil murmured hiding his flushed complexion in Patton’s chest to which he nearly squealed in response of, throwing his arms around his dark strange son squeezing him tightly.

“Aw Virge, you are so sweet. Of course it will be,” Patton exclaimed pressing multiple kisses into Virgil’s bed-head and onto the apples of his cheeks despite his groans in protest.

“Hey, hey, get off!” Virgil said escaping from Patton’s tentacle like grip, crossing his arms over his chest with a pout.

“Hey, where is my dad hug?” Roman asked standing with a mock annoyance which Dee mimicked.

“Aw, I have enough dad hugs for everyone,” Patton said pulling Roman in for a bone-crushing hug, swaying back and forth as Roman giggled, laughter ringing in Patton’s ears. Followed by Dee who nearly knocked Patton off of his feet. “Are you sure, you are still okay with me doing this?”.

“Yes, padre,” Roman said with an exasperated tone, dramatically rolling his eyes.

“I know Princey said this before but go and bring the nerd home,” Virgil said was a small smile, finally tucking into his pancake stack.

“I love you all so much,” Patton exclaimed pressing a kiss on each of his boys cheeks, each receiving a drastically different reaction and now his previously dour mood had instantly been lifted and the prospect of seeing Logan today and posing the million dollar question didn’t seem so terrifying with the support of his wonderful family behind him.

Emile arrived a short while later, close to the time of Patton’s departure, bringing his own words of wisdom and encouragement. Providing hugs which enveloped him in warmth, comforting him in a way only a brother could, they were as a close as brothers. His calming presence provided him another layer of support as he made the final preparations, going over his folders repeatedly, making sure he had all of the correct forms and documents, rehearsing his practised speech until he would recite it perfectly from memory and then just like that it was time to leave for the orphanage.

Where Logan would be waiting for him.

“Logan, please come out. I need to know you are safe, please,” Maggie pleaded to the locked door of the bathroom which Logan had locked himself inside, in a fit of panic and was refusing to come out despite her begging.

Logan wasn’t as okay as he seemed. Maggie knew that but hoped the highly anticipated return of Patton would bring him out of his slump and brighten his spirits though it seemed to do the opposite. Logan had been confined to his room for the past few days while he recovered and whenever she could, she brought him new reading materials, textbooks at his request and even sat with him for hours on end just talking about whatever came to mind. He seemed okay then but this morning when Maggie entered Logan’s room it was clear he hadn’t been sleeping. He looked exhausted. His face was pale apart from the deep purple bruises staining her under-eyes, all life had drained from his expression but as she voiced her concerns he brushed her off claiming he was fine and not to worry and Maggie had been stupid enough to believe him.

Maggie helped him out of bed, his injuries were healing well and he could walk short distances almost unaided now but the lack of proper rest had clearly taken its toll. She gave him space to change before leading him to the communal bathroom, leaving him to ready himself while she worked. That was a mistake. When she returned Logan had locked himself in the bathroom, in a blind panic as a method of protection, she could hear his choked breaths from through the door.

“Please, let me help you, Logan,” Maggie begged her heart clenching as the pitiful half-sobs reached her ears. Logan was trapped in there, terrified, unable to breathe, pressing his trembling figure to the door in an effort to keep everyone who seek to hurt him out and himself safe.

“No, you can’t, no one can” Logan cried though it came out laboured and uneven, spoken throughout short intakes of oxygen into his struggling lungs.

“Let’s just talk okay, you can do that for me, can you?” Maggie said pressing a hand on the door to steady herself. “I’ll talk if you can’t right now and I want you to listen and breathe for me,”.

“Logan you are a incredible, intelligent, selfless boy who did not in anyway deserve what happened to you. You deserve so much more than I or any parent or guardian could ever give you because you are worth so much Logan. I know you don’t see it and I know you are trapped in a really dark place right now but I promise you, you will someday seen your own worth and someone will love you heart and soul and never hurt you again. You just need to open your heart up to let it in. It will be difficult and there will be dark times but you need to fight, you need to fight against all of those negative thoughts in your head and break free because then you will heal,” Maggie said fighting to keep the tears at bay for Logan’s sake but she lost the battle and a few fell from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. “You are not unlovable, you are worthy of all of the love in the world,”.

Once Maggie had said her piece, she sat back on her knees and waited, the corridor fell silent and for a moment she believed Logan would not come out and prepared to speak again until the lock clicked and a red eyed Logan revealed himself from behind the door, joining her in the position on the floor though unable still to meet her eyes but it was enough.

“Thank you Logan,” Maggie whispered loud enough for Logan to hear closing the distance between them but keeping her hands to herself, knowing Logan’s feelings about physical touch especially as highly stressful experience or emotional outburst like today. He had described it as boiling water scalding his skin right down to his bones and she did not wish to contribute any more to his discomfort. “ Do you know what triggered it?”.

Logan flinched, shaking his head rapidly before drawing his hand to his lips, then letting them fall and rest on his throat, pressing a little to hard on the skin there. Ah, he couldn’t speak. It wasn’t unheard of for Logan to lose his ability to speak after an outburst, it was one of his most hated symptoms though it was rare, occurring more frequently during his first few months at the Orphanage as a ten year old who had been thrown into a new environment. It appeared Logan was going through a similar experience now.

“That is okay,” Maggie repeated until Logan’s shaking settled and his taut muscles began to relax somewhat but his voice still hadn’t return and may not for a little while. She choose her next words carefully. “Patton should be arriving soon, you don’t have to see him if you don’t want to, I can ask him to reschedule a better day,”.

Logan shook his head violently, brow furrowed and the corner of his lips turned downwards. Maggie smiled, maybe it would take seeing Patton again to light of mood and return the beautiful sparkle to his eyes. It was then the little bell sounded indicating someone’s arrival - Patton’s most likely - and the fear returned to Logan’s expression.

“Everything will be alright, I promise. Why don’t you finish getting ready and wait in the meeting room, I have some things I need to discuss with Patton first, okay?” Maggie said rising to her feet, followed by Logan who nodded, turning to return to the bathroom as Maggie sighed and ventured down the the foyer where Patton was waiting.

“Hello, Patton,” Maggie exclaimed as Patton startled but smiled as soon as he saw her despite still fidgeting with the baby blue folder he clutched between his fingers.

“Hello, Maggie, golly it seems so long since I last saw you kiddo,” Patton said not expanding any further, both knowing what meeting they were referring to.

“Yes it has been, now you told me some rather exciting news over the phone, you are really doing this?” Maggie asked a little hesitant, she had always been protective over Logan but recent events it had increased drastically.

“I am or at least I want to, yes, I want to adopt Logan,” Patton announced with a grin, glancing down at the folder in his hands. “ I have wanted to ever since I met him but after everything that happened and seeing him in the hospital really put everything into perspective and it is the right time,”.

Maggie couldn’t help but smile, immediately pulling Patton in for a hug despite being considerable smaller than him, it felt necessary but as he pulled away she recalled Logan and the incident this morning.

“That is wonderful but I do need to inform you that an incident occurred this morning before you arrived and Logan became extremely distressed which triggered a panic attack,” Maggie explained watching as Patton winced and tried to process the information. “I managed to calm him down and he did agree to meet with you but I need to warn you Logan has become non-verbal and may remain this way for a while yet,”.

“Oh…um...d-do you think I should wait, with asking him and everything?” Patton asked hanging his head, attempting to hide the visible tremble in his voice and hands.

“I think that is up to you to decide but I think you are a wonderful father and Logan will be very happy with you, whatever your decision may be,” Maggie said with a comforting smile as she took the folder from Patton. “Now don’t keep him waiting,”.

Patton beamed at Maggie and practically sprinted down the corridor towards the meeting room as Maggie giggled, glancing down at the folder in her hands and he knew Logan would be okay.

Logan paced the length the of the room repeatedly, tapping out a rhythmic pattern out of his thighs as he walked, soundlessly grumbled beneath his breath. His voice hadn’t returned despite having had composed himself since his embarrassing outburst this morning and it was only a short while until Patton’s scheduled arrival. How to Patton interpret his lack of speech? Would he berate him? Would he simply turn away and walk out never to return again? No. Logan refused to believe the lies his brain fabricated, Patton was a good person. Selfless and consistently kind to Logan even when he was undeserving of such kindness and had support Logan through his recent…hardships. This meeting would be no different than any of their previous sessions or he hoped it would be.

Logan heart rate was still raised as he continued to tap and pace and pace and tap, until the pain in his ankle became almost unbearable and he was forced to rest to prevent further damage to the slow healing injury. He hadn’t brought his book, having left it beneath his pillow for safe-keeping and blindly picked one from the surrounding shelves, in order to keep his hands busy while he waited. Tracing his fingertips along the worn cover and broken spine, focusing on his slow breathing in an effort to ignore the pain but keeping his gaze firmly fixated on the door. Patton arrived a short while later dressed in his usual but uniquely Patton outfit with a blinding grin stretched across his face and Logan almost leapt to his feet or would have if not for his injuries, feeling a similar smile form on his own lips.

“Hiya kiddo,” Patton exclaimed approaching the reading nook but he did not fall into the beanbag chair as he normally did but knelt down in front of Logan’s armchair, a position typically reserved for their more serious discussions, which unnerved him. “Maggie told me the situation and don’t worry or force yourself to talk but I do have something I want to talk to you about,”.

Notes: I love Maggie so much, I never expected for her to become such as big part of the story-line or one of my favourite characters to write but it is going to be so sad when she isn’t as prominent in the story during act 2 and 3, she will still be in there but more as a background character and it makes me so said.

How many times have you wished a smarter person was leaning over your shoulder whispering the right answer in your ear?

As I think about some of my own situations, a better response would have meant the difference between success and failure, whether it’s landing a job, going on a date, pitching an investment, or simply convincing a child its time to go to bed.

With the emergence of interactive voice technology, and its growing reservoir of analytical skills, one of the hottest technologies in the future will be a self-learning AI bot or agent that serves as our daily coach and advisor on life’s journey. If you can imagine a portable version of Alexa or Siri with an IQ of 200 and the conversational skills of your favorite talk show host, you’re getting a glimpse of what lies ahead.

We’re on the edge of a radical transformation where, very soon, we won’t be able to tell where the human ends and technology begins. This intermeshing of mind, body, and technology will become so seamless and invisible that we essentially “become one with the tech.”

On the surface, this sounds like George Orwell’s worst nightmare, a totally frightening proposition where our first instinct is fear, fear of the machines taking over. In the back of our minds, we have a deep fear of losing control or having something hijacking our minds and assuming control. After all, isn’t this what Hollywood has been warning us about?

Yes, there’s always a potential for things to go wrong, but adding intelligent agents to our life could have an enormously positive impact.

Smart agent scenarios

As I was thinking through the possibilities, I would like to step you through a series of scenarios, showing how this type of technology will amp up our capabilities so most of us can complete the work of 3-4 people during a typical day.

For AI to become truly useful, we need to have complete trust that it has our best interest at heart. We can accept its advice or ignore it, but the choice will be ours.

The day begins with my personal AI agent, named Finley, guiding me through every task during my daily journey.

Every morning begins with that first waking moment in the bedroom. Unless there is something urgent on my schedule, Finley will wait to wake me up when he knows I’ve had enough sleep.

Through a system of constantly probing the subconscious, Finley will adjust sleep patterns and learn to calm my mind to optimize rest. Since Finley is in constant learning mode, every adjustment used to silence the inner head drama will be quickly assessed and tweaked and re-tweaked until each night becomes a deep immersion into a perfect state of rest.

Naturally, resting my mind is only part of the answer and Finley will also have the ability to change variables in every room to compensate for new sources of anxiety and stress by altering air chemistry, adding oxygen when needed, controlling light-levels and even the spectrum of light, adjusting background music, and creating rocking motions and surface vibrations as needed.

Finley’s goal each day is to have me functioning at peak efficiency, and his approach will change, as each new day requires an entirely new operational strategy. For those new to adding their own AI agent to their life, it won’t take long for agents like Finley to get to know me better than I know myself.

Throughout the day, my conversations with Finley become a central part of who I am and how I manage each task in order of importance.

Even simple routines, like taking a shower, will have Finley adjusting the water to the perfect temperature, fine-tuning the spray to stimulate sore muscles, dispensing optimal amounts of soap, shampoo, and conditioners, and even making recommendations about those products when I’m shopping.

When it comes to getting dressed, Finley will help me select the color and style of clothing that will best mesh with the people I’m scheduled to meet and the kind of activities I have in store. Every day Finley will reassess my wardrobe, shoes, and fashion accessories. Purchasing new items will be as simple as looking through a list of Finley’s recommendations and making the selection.

Planning breakfast, as with every meal, will be as simple or as complicated as I wish to make it. Finley knows which ingredients I have on hand, knows how my body will react to each of them, and will suggest meals that can optimize my daily performance. If I prefer to dine out, he will suggest restaurants, possible delivery options, and which friends and acquaintances may be close by to join me as a way of turning it into a social experience.

Finley, the ultimate work buddy

Commuting to work will be as simple as saying, “Finley, can you find me a ride to work?” Whether it’s an Uber, driverless car, or a brother-in-law who’s not working, he will know which option will work best.

To be sure, Finley will come with a number of interface options beyond its standard voice commands. Users will be able to select from a wide range of input-output devices like watches, touch bands, and keyboards on the input side, and a variety of displays, visual overlays, skin-tinglers, and sensory alert mechanisms as output choices.

Finley will come in an assortment of shapes and forms, and most people will want to humanize his presence. Options will include switching from male to female, adding a personality package with a voice and face on a screen, or perhaps an animated head with an expression module, templated smells, sounds, or little “oh-oh” tones when he knows you’re doing something risky. But over time each agent will gravitate towards the persona of your perfect non-human partner.

As ways to enhance the standard “voice in my head,” he can shift forms and move into a standalone robot offering a more physical presence, a talking portrait on a wall, or even take the form of animatronic shoes that I wear to impress my friends. As I step onto an elevator, enter a car, or walk into a boardroom, he will automatically work with each of the available devices, pushing information to nearby displays, asking me to slip on a VR/AR headset, or mentioning nearby controllers to add to the experience.

Every work-related situation will enable me to leverage Finley differently:

In a retail setting, Finley will help facilitate payments, do inventory crosschecks, and recommend other products to boost sales.

For maintenance positions, he will know which tools I’ll need, pull up diagrams of how pieces fit together, do point-to-point measurements, and recommend which approach will be the fastest and most effective.

In an HR position, he will remind me about topics to cover with each candidate, warn me if I’m saying or doing something inappropriate, and prompt me to discuss new policies, practices, and procedures.

If I’m a computer programmer, Finley will remind me of formatting issues, propose the best possible algorithm for each situation, select readily available routines from online libraries, and even test each segment of code before I move on.

In so many ways, Finley is my sounding board, my ally, my protector, my strategy partner, and my confidant. At the same time, he’s not intended to replace my need to be around other people. Rather, part of Finley’s core programming will be to improve my social life, knowing the right time and place for every interaction, and solving a variety of concerns before they ever become a real issue.

Even people with mental health issues will have the ability to improve, as this type of AI agent will calm their emotions and help them make decisions. Once they are able to master their own daily routine, they will have the ability to develop additional skills and, in many cases, even find meaningful work.

Since with humans, every action comes with a certain amount of risk, Finley will have a way of knowing my goals for the day and steering me through the daily minefield, letting me know instantly when I’m teetering on the edge of something catastrophic.

Over time, Finley will become an expert on me, knowing when something is off, or if I’m not feeling well. As AI agents improve, they will have the ability to diagnose diseases, understand the limitations of every injury, and guide us through wellness routines that will keep us physically fit and mentally alert. In the case of illness, he will recommend treatment options, medicines, therapies, or whatever may be appropriate.As my protector, Finley is constantly evaluating every person, object, vehicle, and animal entering my space. In this capacity, he is assessing danger, knowing if something got added to my drink, studying patterns, calculating proximities, and searching for anything that can possibly go wrong.

Will AI make me lazy?

If you’re worried about an AI agent doing all the work and making us lazy, you’re not alone. It would appear that much of our daily struggle is removed and, at least on the surface, life appears too easy.

However, my sense is that these types of enhancements will set the stage for an entirely new level of engagement. We will learn to reevaluate our capabilities through the lens of an entirely new caliber individual, and our expectations will grow with every accomplishment.

Writing papers, filling out forms, creating illustrations, handling correspondence, and verbal communication will all be handled in a fraction of the time it took before. With all of the drudgery out of the way, our mind will be fed up to focus on higher order tasks such as situational analysis, devising new strategies, finding new approaches, and adding creative elements to every deliverable.

Rather than becoming lazy, a more likely outcome will be the unleashing of my true inner self, the super-me waiting to reveal itself. In just a matter of weeks, we will likely accomplish 3-4 times as much as we did before.

Final thoughts

Naturally, the scenarios I’ve described can only work if there are very well-defined privacy and security barriers in place. We will only want to work with an agent like Finley if we trust it completely.

If we can’t trust him with our credit cards, bank accounts, and health records, his overall value will only be a fraction of what he was designed for.

That said, Finley will come with his own self-diagnostic systems, managing a variety of firewalls, constantly checking for hacker crumbs, and knowing when something feels wrong.

Recent movies coming out of Hollywood have painted a very dim future for humanity, as this type of machine intelligence takes over a greater part of our future. Most often they either portray the villains as evil hackers or the technology itself.

But the reality is that we are still a long way from true artificial intelligence. Instead, we have entered into more of an augmented intelligence era. There’s a huge difference between augmenting a human and superseding them.

In my mind, we still have a wide range of opportunities to explore before we reach the danger zone, and indeed when we get close enough to peer over the edge we may very well decide the danger isn’t nearly as unmanageable as we imagined it to be.

Evaluations 1 + 2

Evaluation 1 - The Black Market

Introduction

This evaluation will be based around my own personal thoughts and reflections towards our most recent performance at the Black Market. Both pros and cons as well as any future developments will all be covered throughout.

Pros

Experience - As the aspiring musicians we are, embracing public performances such as this one is a must. Through experience we gain a wide variety of skills that we grow and incorporate into our live personas, skills such as;

Confidence

Stage presence

Audience interaction

Performance techniques

Resourcefulness - In the instance of a setback to a performance, e.g. a snapped string, amp malfunction. Being able to resolve this by using what you can to carry on.

Pacing yourself - Not giving your best all at once and exhausting both yourself and audience, spreading it out over the duration of your set.

Persistence through faults - Realising that mistakes aren't the end of the world.

Self-drive (Good or bad) - The will to push through every aspect as a performer.

Artist analysis - Studying how others approach a performance and their used techniques.

Cons

Professionalism - The risks associated when in the accompaniment of multiple younger bands will always be a worry. Whether it's failure to attend, lack of equipment, or just general stage fright on the night, they're always there. Being students who wish to take on a career in music, issues regarding professionalism is a threat placed right at the back of my mind, one I thought I would never see. However, is one that surprisingly was the focal point of the night.

Throughout the entirety of the night my enjoyment towards the music was shadowed and replaced by mere embarrassment towards the actions made by certain individuals spread across each band. From onstage giggling to mid-song talking, a refusal to sing to off stage communication. Lack of interest to general preparation issues. All was there to witness. In my mind I was pleased to see a lack of attendance. It eases the mind knowing those actions will not affect the external views towards the people who actually made an effort and tried to find the relevance behind it all.

Quality - Being one of many core units we were all required to take the preparations towards this live performance very seriously. With the help and overall guidance required we left no stone unturned when securing our place at the venue. Within my current reflections I seem to lack a sense of relevance. The burning question being Was it all Worth it? to which I would argue that no, I don't believe it was. Granted, some of the steps taken were compulsory. When taking someone's health and safety into consideration you do not joke around. However, for all the secluded steps such as; Promotion, Equipment, Band information and general stress, there was no point. All was done for an invisible audience. Forcing extra work on yourself without a single form of gain is ludicrous. The countless worries concerning equipment when everything needed was already provided proved meaningless. And the stress of gathering band names from a group of individuals who appear to lack any form of interest was pointless, to which was never resolved anyway.

Every step took towards that performance was of a professional standard. From an external view, looking at what we did I would have been happy to spend my money knowing I would have gotten it's worth. However, what was delivered was not worth the asking price, nowhere near. The majority looked as if they were making it up as they went, which made the one and a half months practice completely irrelevant. Myself and Heather made sure that no money was taken on the night, profit or not, the night wasn't worth it.

Future Reliability - On the basis of what I had seen, I struggle to speak comfortably when referring to a future performance with the lower levels. Everything is all highly dependent on trust. What they say and what they do are two very different things. If I'm expected to work with individuals who show minimal interest and little promise to deliver at crucial times, then I can also be expected not to attend.

Future Developments

Everything noted within the cons section needs to be addressed and worked on. As the college/university grade students that we are, we all should be aspiring to produce performances of high standards, always. In order to do this we're all required to input the external hours at home to ensure the readiness and overall quality. As individuals we all know our limits. Both strengths and weaknesses are always taken into account when a decision is made towards what we do. However, when part of a collective group our talents are mixed and we're sometimes expected to work with something that simply does not work. You're either good in a band or you aren't and that is what needs to be realised for us to move on. Persistently working with something that doesn't work is counter-productive and needs to stop. We need to capitalise on our strengths and what actual works for us to build ourselves up as musicians. I strongly believe that everyone involved can come together to produce something truly great, there are just a lot of areas to develop before we're able to get there.

Evaluation 2 - The Greyhound

Introduction

This evaluation will be based around my own personal thoughts towards our planned out performance at the greyhound . Reflections as well as any future developments will all be covered throughout.

The months of planning, as well as all the rehearsals spaced out for our last performance of 2016 at the Greyhound sadly was cut short because of the lack of first aid on the night, this was caused by an unforeseen injury not too long before.

Despite not being able to carry out the performance I still strongly feel as if a lot can be learned from the experience as a whole. The time spent planning out this unsuccessful performance has in no way been wasted. Our planning processes as well as our overall team communication will be carried forward with us in preparation for our next live performance experience.

Within my role as event manager I began my search for local venues around the Mansfield area, Based off of reviews and overall word-of-mouth my search quickly led me to two venues in particular, The Brown Cow, and The Talbot. Unfortunately somewhere along the line both suggestions were later disregarded which left us having an unfamiliar venue booked for us in our absence.

I am in full agreement that it is most beneficial to seek out venues outside of the Mansfield area, however, for the sake of a college performance, I deem the whole process slightly unnecessary for everyone.

Future Developments

Below will be a set list of bullet points explaining what I believe should be changed in the near future. The certain things that would be most beneficial for us to move forward from this in a positive manner.

Location - The location of a venue can play a large role in the potential success of a live performance. This venue in particular was housed in Nottingham, that reason alone is a major contribution to its inevitable failure. For a college housed in Mansfield, with students living in or around the Mansfield area, it would have been more realistic to look for a venue within Mansfield. This not only eases the pressures of travelling, it would have also raised team moral within the weeks leading up to it. The Brown Cow and The Talbot were all Mansfield based suggestion that were taken into consideration, however because of the Brown Cow’s lack of stage space and The Talbot’s lack of availability, both were quickly disregarded for any future use. Instead of disregarding both of the venues straight away, I feel as if it would have been most beneficial for us to have discussed them both further, outlining the benefits instead of the negatives. In that instance we would have booked one of the venues and would have had an actual performance to evaluate.

Level 3 Students - A lot of the considerations and extra work were implemented because of the level 3 students. Because a large amount of the are under the age of 18, standard venue health and safety regulations that do not typically concern ourselves as HND students, are still required to be carried out and thought of on their behalf for their own safety. Parental consent form also proved to be a massive inconvenience for everyone. For weeks on end we we all waiting for them to be handed in. Subsequently we were told that we had wasted out time because half of them never attempted to get the forms filled in. All this being said, I have gained a wider understanding and an overall increased amount of respect towards those who have to frequently manage situations like that.

Lowering our expectations - Being a group of college students, it is expected that the overall interest in what we have to offer is low. The term ‘student’ immediately placed you into a category of education. Because of this most peoples perspectives turn negative and begin to visualise a world in which the music provided by ourselves is poor, in addition to appearing forcefully placed on stage because we’re obligated to be there when that really is not the case. Instead of looking for the venues of highest quality, we should be focusing our attention towards those of lower popularity. Achieving that would mean recurring slots and guaranteed success on the night.

Given the outcome, I am still fully happy with what we had achieved within the weeks building up to unsuccessful performance. In response we were still able to take part in a small hub stage, It was not much, however it proved to be sufficient given our current circumstance.

Everyone carried out their role to a decent standard. As always people have tendencies to lose focus, but it never usual has lasting effects. The action plan as of right now is to move forward from this and aim for bigger and better things throughout the new year. To throw ourselves into everything that we do in the hopes of creating something successful and memorable long after its passing.
