thinking about kieran again... particularly about how i feel like he struggles with a weak sense of self and how him identifying so heavily with ogrepon, (or at least the version of ogrepon he originally knew,) probably helped him stabilize how he saw himself, only to have something he considered so core to his identity essentially ripped away from him. not only that, it was by someone he seemingly wanted to trust and open up to, (which i doubt he does very often.)
i definitely think that the way he's handling things is far from healthy, but i can get why he'd have such an intense reaction to losing something that was so important to him and basically being betrayed by someone he wanted to consider a friend.

Ageswap Tang Shen has vitiligo.
When she's first introduced in ageswap, she's fairly self-conscious about it. If she's got to leave the apartment, like for school or to meet up with friends, she wears makeup to cover the patches up.
It's properly not just about the vitilgo. Shen's had bad experiences with people in the past that have made her reluctant to tell anyone unless she's sure they won't be an ass about it. And she's just moved to another country and wants to get to know people and make new friends, so she's extra self-conscious. Also she's 14/15, so she's got all the regular teenage self image issues to deal with.
The only time she does leave home without makeup is when she sneaks out at night. Like who's going to see her? She'll be climbing rooftops or exploring abandoned buildings!
She does wear a mask though, just in case there is someone else around and she gets caught somewhere she shouldn't be. It's not a mask like Casey's, it's one she made for a school play and was allowed to keep. Though admitedly this isn't so people don't see her vitilgo, it's so no one can figure out it was her and tell her parents. Mr and Mrs Tang would not be happy if they knew what their daughter was up to after they'd gone to bed.
This means that when she meets Yoshi, he doesn't know what she looks like at first. Like he knows she's a human teenager, and that she has dark hair, but the mask and clothes she wears to keep warm hide everything else.
When he does find out she has vitilgo, it's not going to be a big deal. Like why would it matter to him? He does ask a few questions though, and it's possible she might have some auto-immune issues that go along with it (I haven't decided yet), so he'd also ask if there was anything he could do to help with those, if she wanted help that is.

The Submas Designs are a lot more clever than you thought.
First lets look at the Submas overall design.  We know that the original design was intended to make the Subway Bosses look like clowns and kind of creepy (that backfired); hence the comically large shoes and exaggerated expressions. Let’s start to break down each part of the design.
To begin, The Submas extreme expressions are a possible reference to the symbol of theatre; the mask of Tragedy and the Mask of Comedy.  The mask of tragedy is commonly portrayed frowning ( not necessarily cry) on a black base mask while the mask of Comedy is portrayed smiling on a white base masks. Sometimes these masks are gold or split black and white color.  The masks together represent the two extremes of the human psyche. Definitely the contrast we see between Emmet's smile and Ingo’s frown.
Next up, the coats.  These are obviously designed to look like train tracks.  The vertical grey lines representing the rails, the red brown the tie (the wood connecting the rails), and the buttons are the spikes that secure the track.  You can see the pattern best on the back of the Submas coat.  Looking at it you could laugh and say “I guess that makes the Subway boss themselves the train”, and you know what? You’re right.
This brings us to the most interesting part of their design, the color and pose.  Yes, there is an explanation to the silly pose too.  It’s so silly that we can just brush this whole design off as being another funny Pokemon character design; but unfortunately it’s actually thought out.
The Submas themselves are the New York Subway. Or at least they are the personified version of it.  Let’s look at the colors again.  Black and White.  Very fitting for a game literally called Pokemon Black and White.  That alone brings us to some interesting comparisons with the game themes and pokemon.
Kudari or (Emmet in the English version) wears all white. He values routine and rules and is ultimately pretty point blank.  We can easily make that conclusion that  Emmet represents Reshiram and truth. If we break down his name we see that in Japanese it means something along the lines of “down train” or moving away/going down hill.  The different translations usually mean the same, except the name “Emmet” is a bit out of place.  A lot of people say the Submas names in English are most likely to be puns of “Ingoing and Emitting”.  But my crazy self did more digging and found that Emmet means “truth” specifically universal truth.  This name goes back to old German, Irish, and even Hebrew. All looping back to Reshiram and themes of the game. (On a funny side note, Emmet is also the Cornish word for ant; so Emmet having a Durant is really funny. )
Next up is Nobori or Ingo who wears a black coat and appears frowning. Despite that , his is very encouraging and excited about moving forward. This makes sense since the name Nobori in Japanese more or less means to move up/forward ( specifically up a mountain).  That’s why a lot of people believe that the poor man was eebie deebied for the pun because Warden Ingo works on Mt. Coronet. In English, Ingo is thought to be a shortened version of “Ingoing” which also aligns with not only the Japanese name but the character’s reoccurring theme of progress, moving forward, and ideals. In this sense Ingo very much represents Zekrom and ideals.
Tumblr media
Truth and ideals, Reshiram and Zekrom, Tragedy and comedy, white and Black.  All very good interpretations and symbolism for two funny train men. I would be satisfied with just knowing that, but no; the Submas are also a funny gijinka of the New York Subway.  This is the part the has me laughing at how simple it is and yet we just easily accepted that they were just a bit strange.
Take a look at this. This is a Zebra Board.
Tumblr media
Yep, it’s black and white. And do you know what? This MTA sign only appears in the New York subway.  What does it do?  These are used by conductors to indicate safety and that the train has lined up in the station. Every time the subway comes into the station, the conductor has to physically point at this board/bar to indicate that it is safe for the doors to open. The action is called "point and call" or "point and acknowledge".  This practice is used in a few other train/subway stations (such as Japan), but the black and white board is New York specific. The pose of the submas suddenly makes a lot of sense.
Other Important notes observations.
Tumblr media
The Submas face represents the front of the train.  So their eyes are the lights (hence Ingos glowing eyes in PLA), their side burns are cow catchers ( see graphic), and the Medalion on the hat is round like a train number plate.  Another interesting thing is that the Submas use airline Captain Pilot hats like Japanese train conductors use.  The only part of their outfit that confuses me is the arm bands.  This is more of a police uniform element and not a train conductor thing.
so to conclude, the Submas are basically a reference to in game themes, Reshiram/Zekrom, Trains, and literally the New York subway
I am not an expert. These are just my observations. I could be completely wrong.  Take and add what you would like to.  If you have more to add about the design, feel free to reblog that info. I would also like to see your interpretation.

First reminder: MHA is written by a Japanese man for a Japanese audience, and if you can’t even for one second at least try to look at it from the perspective of Japanese cultural and spiritual beliefs instead of projecting your own western ones… good luck, I guess?
Second reminder: MHA is a meta story about the art of fiction, escapism, fantasy vs. reality, and theatre. It’s quite literally a three-act play about fantasy, reality, and the balance of both. It’s about a stage, and character masks, and actors, and the real world outside of the stage, and about fighting against the writer who is too lost in his own fantasy.
Third reminder: visual storytelling is a tool sometimes used to contradict the lines of the story, which invites readers to think about what is actually the truth here.
Fourth reminder: MHA is anti-darwinism and anti-biological essentialism.
Fifth reminder: Hero system was literally created to control quirked population in the post-apocalypse. It’s FOR quirks. Heroes exist to keep population’s quirk usage in check by being the only profession that allows you to use them, and strictly for ‘good’, while also showing off those quirks to keep population entertained and content with the lie that quirks are accepted, actually! (Aren’t heroes so cool and their quirks are so flashy? See, we like quirks! We accept and allow quirks! Only if you use them for the good of society, of course! You are still not allowed to use or express them if you’re not a hero though, sorry). So. No, you can’t be a ‘hero’ (job) without a quirk, having quirks is A REQUIREMENT for this job.
Sixth reminder: MHA is a sci-fi with fantasy elements. Some concepts in sci-fi aren’t meant to be 1:1 parallels to real life. Quirkless people aren’t a disability allegory, it’s an allegory for any minority in general. MHA is a story about a person from a minority becoming one of people in power and about what effect a person with the experience of being a part of minority can have on others in power, acting as the first falling domino that ends up completely rewriting the script of the story.
Seventh reminder: MHA is about one person’s small actions affecting the world like a chain reaction. One action affects another person, and that person also makes it’s own small action. Everyone performing their small actions together, those small actions eventually combining and creating big results. Concepts of karma and butterfly effect. That’s literally what the idea of OFA is about. Everyone thinking about everyone else even just a little, doing their parts, creating a web and changing the world little by little.
Eighth reminder: the themes, good lord, the themes. Remember the fucking themes, you dumbfucks. My god. One of those fucking themes is the real person vs. the mask, by the way. Which, by the way, circles back to the first reminder, since it’s all about the Japanese concept of honne and tatemae.
Ninth reminder: touch grass and stop projecting.
P.S. ‘Izuku doesn’t want to change the status quo’ - Izuku wanting to save Shigaraki is literally him going against the narrative of the story. Saving Shigaraki IS changing the status quo - it’s another (very big) falling domino that will have a huge effect on the world and the status quo as the result.

Other illustrations from "A trip to Alagadda" The Four Lords + Rat Man (scp 049).
From my knowledge, this is a very non-canonical depiction but hell this is the scp fandom I can do whatever I want.
My thought process: as scp 035 (Dyo) is a Greek theatre mask, and the king closely resembles the hanged king's tragedy it would be fun to make all the Lords a depiction of a different Western theatre style.
Anguished Lord- pretty self-explanatory he's a porcelain ancient Greek theatre mask, in the style of Dionysus henceforth the grapes and golden leaves, and of course, our drama queen needs hair *Dramatic Hairflip*
Odious Lord- despite his Tudor garb he wears a Roman theatre mask. I originally wanted to portray him in a Japanese Noh theatre mask, but being a pitiful sad European theatre kid who eats raisin porridge every morning, has never smelled a chilli pepper and will die in the sun, I am a Western theatre kid and would feel rather strange portraying what I know very little about. Also, I would want the mask to have a wider arrangement of colour but Alagadda's colour palette does not allow for that. Later with a deeper dive into Noh theatre history and culture, I may redesign him but for now, we have Bacchus.
I like to think he has terrible beef with the Anguished Lord.
Mirthful Lord- Commedia dell'arte was a rather silly part of theatre culture, with many gags, improvisation and silly jokes, feels perfect for the Mirthful Lord. Pantalone is often one of the masters of the Commedia, greedy and erratic, hmmm. His other garb is that of a jester, so funzies, and because of the shape of his mask he taunts 049 because of their "likeness".
Diligent Lord- A white Carnival of Venice mask from my understanding the most accurate depiction of all the lords, just funny to draw and also 👁️.
Pierre- No explanation needed, however hohohon.

Pavitr Prabhakar: The Design
Pavitr Prabhakar my beloved!
I love him. I absolutely love Pavitr and everything about him. And the best thing about him, other than his everything, is his design. So let's get to it!
PART 1: THE MASK
He was so cool and such a total sunshine but the most striking aspect was the immaculate design. Huge upgrade on his old model which was pretty much just a normal spider-suit with a white dhoti, which, not gonna lie, was just disappointing and underwhelming. But they went off on Pavitr's design in the movie and everyone's talking about it so let's also talk about it.
First of all,
LOOK AT MY BOY!!!
Tumblr media
Just look at that design! So cool! So awesome! And so so Desi!!!
Its these desi aspects that I want to shed light on cos I know there are non-Indian fans who didn't catch a lot of the nuances cos they're not familiar enough with Indian culture and even Indian fans who didn't know about some details cos they aren't from the areas the inspiration for these elements were drawn from.
Mainly I hope to help artists and writers with this, so they have more information to create with, as well as the casual fans so they have more info and can immerse themselves better as well as appreciate just how much effort went into making this spectacular movie.
This might be a long post with me just rambling away so braze yourself people.
So lets get into it.
{WARNING: Infodump incoming}
First, lets start with the Mask
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here we have two different angles of his mask. The most prominent features of his mask are his eyes. There is a multi-layer outline for them in black, blue, red, and white, which of course are the classic spiderman colours but never quite used like this. Usually there is only a single outline in shades of, or adjacent colours of black, red, or white.
(Disclaimer: I'm not a 100% sure of this being actually the inspo behind the eyes. I'm pretty sure though, like 80%. So this has not been confirmed.)
The design for his eyes reminded me of one specific thing:
Koodiyattam, which is a 2000 year old ancient temple artform from the southern Indian state of Kerala. Koodiyattam is not just the only surviving Sanskrit theatre in the world, but it also includes elements of koothu, from the Sangam era, the golden age of Tamizh culture, and thus was declared by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Below is a picture of a Koodiyattam performer.
Tumblr media
Instantly you'll realize that this is a costume drama, with extensive makeup, and complicated dress, especially with regards to the headgear, and is overall similar to the Beijing opera, not in terms of make or design or performance, but rather in elaborateness of ensemble. Japanese art forms like Noh or Kabuki could also come to mind along with certain Balinese dances.
Here is another photo which will give you a better look.
Tumblr media
Notice the layered eye makeup in black, red, and white.
Here we have a closeup of a different performer where you can see it even more clearly.
Tumblr media
The first time I saw Pavitr's eyes on screen, this is what immediately came to my mind as someone interested in traditional theaters of all kinds. Notice that Koodiyattam extensively uses reds and blacks, along with whites, which is also the colour palette that most spiderpeople choose, which is a cool coincidence. Blue is not that heavily used unlike the others however, but you can see it more in some costumes but generally not in makeup.
If we're talking less of what it reminded me of and more in terms of what the actual inspiration for the eye design probably was, it was most likely Kathakali, Koodiyattam's much younger, more well known, and very popular relative.
Tumblr media
As you can see, Kathakali took its cues for costuming from Koodiyattam. (Actually it took its costuming cues from earlier art forms called Krishnattam, and Ramanattam, but they took it from Koodiyattam so it works.)
Again you can see the layered eye makeup, most prominently in black. (Cool fact, the costume and makeup changes according to the characters being portrayed on stage.)
Below is a picture of a Kathakali character with more elaborate eye makeup.
Tumblr media
(I know a lot of you might think its the same makeup as Koodiyattam but I promise you its not. Inspired yes, same no.)
Because of the elaborate makeup and costume, expression can be a challenge so the art forms make maximum use of exaggerated body movements, hand signs, dance, lyrics etc. But the crowning element of acting in Koodiyattam and Kathakali are the eye techniques and how much simple eye movements can convey to the audience, which if you think about it, is also the case for spider-people. They're the most expressive superheroes in any medium, but they're fully covered so a lot of their expressiveness, both in comics and animation is conveyed through the shape of the eyes, body language, and speech. Another cool coincidence.
Below is a link to a short video which gives an brief overview of Kathakali and the importance of eyes in its performance.
youtube
This second link is a closeup of the eye movements of a female Kathakali character (women characters are called 'Minukku'). It shows how these highly trained artists can even move their eyes according to music. I have been told this can be uncomfortable to watch for some people so here's a warning for those who find eyeballs discomfiting.
youtube
And finally this one right here is a link to a short video on Koodiyattam.
youtube
{All three of these links are mainly aimed at people who find this sort of stuff interesting and want to check them out so if you're not, you can scroll past it, no big deal!}
(Oh man this is getting way too long and more like me gushing about traditional theatre than spiderman. Sorry about that.)
Now lets get back to our boy Pavitr. The second most noticeable feature of his mask is the curved, white line underneath his eyes, which gives off the impression of tusks. The first two pictures on this post already show the lines quite clearly but I'll attach one more angle.
Tumblr media
Something that immediately came to mind when I saw them was Theyyam but I wasn't sure until I saw this post.
Tumblr media
This was the same account that talked about how Pavitr's movements are inspired from Kalaripayattu so I was inclined to trust this. And after this one of the animators did confirm this so I was right on the money.
What exactly is Theyyam?
It is an ancient Hindu folk ritual practiced in northern Kerala, predominantly in the North Malabar region. Its origins can be traced back to the neolithic and chalcolithic eras. And unlike Koodiyattam and Kathakali which are associated with temples and the Koothambalam(temple theatre where temple artforms are performed), Theyyam is performed in the open air in Kaavu, the sacred groves of Kerala. The Theyyam performers become channels and vessels for the gods. Connect this to the 'Great Weaver'/ 'Master Weaver' who gave Pavitr his powers.
(Btw, these sacred groves are also ecological treasure troves and one of the ancient ways of nature preservation and they're really cool so check them out if you can.)
Below are two images of different Theyyams.
Tumblr media
[Puliyoor Kali Theyyam]
Tumblr media
[Porrkali Theyyam]
See that on the cheeks? It resembles Pavitr's design closely right? While Pavitr's are drawn on his mask, these are singular metallic pieces, bound or clutched in the mouth to evoke the imagery and impression of tusks.
Theyyam is not alone in this particular imagery. A variety of folk arts use this, especially animism and folk rituals to show animal physical characteristics, as well as supernatural powers and elements.
For example, below is an image of Thirayttam, a ritual folk practice from the South Malabar region of Kerala. You can see the tusks here too. (Its not that clear, sorry about that.)
Tumblr media
{Reminder: A lot of people think of Theyyam and Thirayattam as the same thing. While there are many similarities, with both being from the Malabar region, they are different practices. Theyyam is also called Tiṟa, and this is the main cause of the confusion but its not Thirayattam.}
Another example is Kalamezhuthu pattu, another religious folk art from Kerala. Mainly associated with the worship of the goddess Badhrakali, it is a sacred floor art done with powder and the result is called a Kalam. Below is a picture of a Kalam.
Tumblr media
See those tusks? Yeah.
So they represent divinity, animal characteristics, inhuman powers etc.
[Interesting Info: Drawing Kalams are an integral part of Mudiyettu, a traditional ritual theatre and folk dance drama from Central Kerala. It is inscribed in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. So do check it out if you're interested.]
{Oh my god I'm going off topic again. Come back bitch.}
To conclude, those lines are inspired by Theyyam markings, and stand for tusks and fangs, and as a spiderperson, who has the powers of a spider, gifted by some spiritual channel, its really apt that he was given such a design.
Next, lets talk about the lower half of Pavitr's mask.
Tumblr media
See those delicate red webs underneath the eyes?
This also reminded me of Theyyam. Its overshadowed by the more vibrant aspects of the costume, but a Theyyam's face has these intricate red patterns as well.
Tumblr media
(Look at those eyes, reminds you of Pavitr's eye design right?)
And as you can see in this next image, after the headgear is put on, the designs mainly concentrate on the lower half of the face, much like Pavitr's mask.
Tumblr media
I admit I might be stretching this as web designs on the mask is a spiderman thing in general but I think I'm the pretty much on the dot on this one, and most likely its a combination of both.
[A 100% sure about that tusk thing though :)]
Also sometimes Theyyams would have these metallic eye coverings.
Tumblr media
[Muchilot Baghavati Theyyam]
A closer look.
Tumblr media
This is just my opinion but those silver eye masks kind of reminded me of the classic Spiderman eyes. Single colour, pupil-less, black outline, no idea how they see out of it etc. This one in particular reminded me of the classic spiderman especially with the eyes outlined in black like that.
Overall, the tusks, plus the thin web design on the mask, and the eyes, the spiderman red colour palette, they all evoked the image of Theyyam for me when I first saw Pavitr on screen.
{There is a very similar art form to Theyyam called Bhootakola in the coastal region of Karnataka, another southern Indian state. Those curious about Theyyam can check out the Kannada movie Kantara which deals with Bhootakola and you'll get an idea about Theyyam as well. The movie is awesome by the way. Watch it if you can.)
(This is getting way too long and image heavy. And I'm also going off tangent too much. Gotta wrap this up!)
Finally lets talk the last aspect of Pavitr's mask. This might actually be the feature that most of the non-Indian audience identified as Indian without anyone pointing it out.
I'm talking about the white, diamond shaped marking on Pavitr's forehead.
Tumblr media
This decorative marking, bindi/pottu/tilaku, might actually be the most recognizable aspect of Indian culture across the world.
If you scroll back to all the previous images I provided, you can see some variation of this in all of them, either drawn on, or as an ornament. While there are some cultural differences in how they're worn, like women in southern India wearing them in all stage of life while their northern counterparts wear them only after marriage(I could be wrong about this, as I've seen children wearing them often, and things could've changed in modern times so please do correct me if I'm wrong), its one of the most common motifs you'll see across the country.
It can be a simple, round mark.
Tumblr media
It can be ornamented.
Tumblr media
It can be a different shape altogether.
Tumblr media
(From the musical sequence 'Pinga' in the Hindi film Bajirao Mastani)
A different colour.
Tumblr media
You get the idea.
Men can wear it as well. though styles and decoration maybe different.
Tumblr media
(From the Tamizh film Ponniyin Selvan 1)
A more modern version.
Tumblr media
Geography wise, the bindi/pottu/tilak is predominantly seen in India, but its also found in other countries of the Indian subcontinent and neighbouring nations, as well as South-East Asia(as they were both part of the ancient Indosphere and had a past of Hindu Kingdoms. See: Srivijaya(Sriwijaya) empire, Indonesia).
Similar forehead markings were even common in China in the past. Those who have seen wuxia and xianxia dramas and movies definitely have seen them before and know what I'm talking about. (Huadian 花鈿)
Religion wise, its predominantly a Hindu motif, but its also part of Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, as well as several other indigenous religions.
{I've actually seen several Indian Christians and Muslims wear it as well, because its their culture, even if its not their religion.}
EDIT: Gaaaaah! I forgot to include this even though I'd intended to from the beginning.
This is not about the mask but some of the prototype designs for Pavitr so I thought I'll just talk about them a bit here.
Tumblr media
Again I can't believe all the effort that went into making this movie. Just look at those designs. Absolutely stellar and inspired. The colour palette itself is amazing.
Honestly everyone else just has no excuse anymore.
[I'll focus on the theatre aspect like I've been doing and talk about the architecture bit sometime else.]
This one is obviously the Theyyam inspired one.
Tumblr media
(Look at the eyes of 4 and 3, you can see they're inspired by the silver eye-mask I mentioned before. Also the headband is silver and looks similar to the bands securing a theyyam's headgear in place.)
A lot more Theyyam elements than what made it to the final cut. Especially the jewellery and the sharp-eyed among you must've already noticed the similarity between the necklaces of the design and the necklaces of the theyyams whose images I provided. The bangles and the anklets are also very distinctively Theyyam and they're called Katakam and Chutakam respectively but the final design seems to have made the bangles gold and more bracelet-like, and the anklets more like ankle-cuffs.
(I so badly wish the necklace stayed in but yeah that could've hindered movement.)
Now lets come to the Yakshagana inspired one.
Tumblr media
(Notice how the shape of the eyes have changed? And the colour palette took a turn? A lot more gold coming in.)
Yakshagana is a form of traditional theatre originating in modern day Karnataka state of India, and currently practiced in both Karnataka and Kerala. It is primarily an art form from the coastal Karnataka region and the neighbouring Kasargod district of Kerala.
Below is a link to more information on Yakshagana so you can take a look at the costuming and see the influences in the above prototype more clearly.
(I'm not gonna go into detail about all the design choices in the Yakshagana prototype, maybe in another post.)
Now lets come to the final prototype.
Tumblr media
(Again the colour palette has shifted, a lot more greens and blues. I do believe that 8 is koothu and not Yakshagana even though it was included in the image above. I say that because of all the white in the design which is very distinctive of a kind of koothu as far as I'm aware.)
I actually already mentioned koothu once before in this post when I was talking about Koodiyattam in the very beginning. So lets go back to it.
Koothu is a folk theatre art that originated in early Tamizh country(Tamizhakam), and broadly speaking, its of two types, Terrukuttu, and Kattaikkuttu. It reached its peak in the golden age of Tamizh culture, the Sangam era and it mainly depicts scene from the epics. Currently types of Koothu are practiced in modern day Tamil Nadu and Kerala(Kerala was once part of ancient Tamizhakam).
Below is a link that will give you more info and an image of the costume with makeup similar to 6.
And this one is a link to a particular kind of koothu in Kerala known as Chakyar Koothu cos all the white on the make of prototype version 8 reminded me of it. (Also Chakyar Koothu is a form of social satire and criticism, it was basically ancient Stand-up comedy and the Chakyar is supposed to be really witty, which fits Spiderman to a T I gotta say.)
Again I'm not gonna go into further details and nuances of the design as this is a prototype design, maybe some other time. But I have to say that this colour palette does make Pavitr a lot more spideresque or evoke a more primal spider energy cos how it connects the viewer to jungle like and more animalistic environments more than the other designs.
And that's it for the mask and the prototypes everybody! Yay!
Holy shit that was long!
I'm gonna stop here for now cos this is already way too much. Can't believe I thought I'd be able to look through the entirety of Pavitr's design in one post. What was I on?
Seriously what kind of drug?
Anyway I'll be making a part 2 for this, looking through Pavitr's clothes and and movements and all. I say Part 2 but considering what happened with the mask I'm pretty sure it might go up to Part 3 or 4. Here's to hoping I learn some moderation by then lol.
(All the images are from google images and I have taken and have credit for exactly none of them. The verbiage is mine completely though.)

Kankiru: My hantengu clone oc who represent "Jubilation." his appearance isn't like any other demon. half of his face is damaged, while broken he still keeps a smile on his face. He's also good with Bunraku Puppets which is given to his blood demon art: Puppetry.
Uranishi: Ishimaki's Mother, works in a theatre, known as the "Mask demon" Due to the endless mask she pulls out. Can change each time she wears a mask that represent japanese Spiritual beings. Also Karaku's soulmate :>
Mokushiroku: A deteoriated demon who lives in a small kotoribako box which inside is a pocket dimension. He likes to torment and torture his own demons. some for the hell off it.. Good friends with Urogi due to him being "Less Boring."
Mahiro: Another Hantengu clone Oc Representing "Numb" A quiet isolated demon who doesn't feel pain and emotion when it comes to hunting. though he would slowly show a smile or a hint of anger.

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva
PART 06
〚FIRST〛〚PREV〛〚NEXT〛
Disclaimer: This is a fan-translation for the Japan-exclusive novellisation of the movie Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. The original novel was written by Aya Matsui under the supervision of Akihiro Hino, and belongs to Level-5.
This translation only aims to be a pleasant read for non-Japanese fans, nothing more: I made a few deliberate changes while translating in order to get the writing style closer to what is usually found in English fanfictions, as the Japanese storytelling can sometimes be different than what we are used to.
Tumblr media
* “The Eternal Kingdom”
All throughout the opera, I could not take my eyes off Janice Quatlane, who played the role of the Queen. It was the first time I saw her in action, and her costume made her look stunning. That white dress and crown suited her so well. She radiated some dignified nobility, with her uplifted cheeks and her big, lively, shining eyes…
And above all else, her beautiful singing voice, which descended from the heavens at the same time as my gaping mouth…
Miss Janice was not just playing as the Queen of Ambrosia. She seemed to be the Queen herself.
No wonder the people of the kingdom swore respect and loyalty to the Queen, I thought as I recalled how the legend started.
“Luke, look over here,” the professor whispered in my ear. “This is the Detragan, an instrument that Oswald Whistler created recently. I heard rumours saying that one person alone could create with it a sound on the same scale and depth as an entire orchestra, but this goes beyond my expectations. It’s really beautiful.”
It was only when he started speaking to me that I was able to detach my attention from Janice.
Looking in the direction he was pointing to me, I had to admit that the Detragan was the strangest instrument I had ever seen. In some ways, it reminded me of a pipe organ; but in terms of size and the massive tone it gave, it was unlike any instrument I had ever seen.
The way the pipe ends were spreading out with the melody… It was as if the Detragan itself had a life of its own.
Meanwhile, Mr Whistler’s expression and vigour as he played all alone was rather uncanny.
Still, my gaze soon went back to Janice, as I was drawn in by her voice once again.
“It’s Janice who is beautiful, Professor…”
I gave a small sigh. I felt so happy in this moment… Even the great mystery of the eternal life had completely left my mind. I wanted to hear the Queen of Ambrosia sing forever.
When the opera came to an end, I was the first to jump out of my seat and give a hearty round of applause.
“Bravo!”
But, strangely enough… Only the professor did the same.
All the other spectators sat in silence, immobile. The air in the theatre was heavy.
“Professor, why aren’t they clapping…?”
Suddenly, the lights went down and the theatre fell once more into complete obscurity. A single spotlight illuminated the stage where Miss Janice had been singing earlier.
Inside the circle of light, stood a lone masked man.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Crown Petone Theatre.”
Every move of that man, who was dressed in a harlequin-like costume, was overly theatrical and exaggerated, giving a terribly eerie impression.
“You are all very lucky. Very lucky indeed. For tonight, we shall witness a miracle.”
I was overtaken by surprise when an ovation suddenly erupted from all over the place.
“Bravo!”
“At last, we can see the main performance.”
“I swear, this was designed to make us sleepy.”
From everywhere around us, the voices of the audience were enthusiastically welcoming the masked man. He responded to all this applause with another exaggerated gesture.
“And now… as it was promised to you all when you bought your tickets, one of you here will be gifted eternal life.”
“Eternal life!?” I shouted out in shock, looking up at the professor right after.
“It appears that we were the only ones not in the know, Luke.”
Like the gentleman he was, he had remained calm and went back to sit down in silence. I followed his lead; after all, I am his apprentice number one. I couldn’t just wallow in this sort of thing.
Still, my mind was clouded with my confusion. I had not expected the puzzle of Eternal Life to appear before us so quickly.
My heart wasn’t ready yet for this. What on Earth was going to happen now? That masked man, who could it possibly be?
“However, there is one condition,” he continued.
“A condition…?”
Someone in the audience had just repeated his words, as if to echo everyone else’s thoughts.
“We invite you all to take part in a certain game. Eternal life shall be gifted to the winner; as for the others… their ‘lives’ will have to be the gift.”
Immediately, the audience began to murmur.
“Give our lives…? What is he talking about?”
The masked man continued with his tale, undisturbed.
“If you want to obtain a miracle from this world, you should all be ready to pay the price…”
“Eternal life or instant death… It can only be one or the other. Is this what he means?” a glamorous middle-aged woman said huffily.
Many other spectators were pale and horrified.
“This has to be a prank! They never said anything about this!”
A bearded man in a strange hat exclaimed in a very loud voice: “I only have half a year left to live, so that’s good for me. Game or no game, I’m happy to be here!”
Some members of the audience were reminded once again that this was not a dream, but that all of this was really happening. This eternal life was not going to be available unless they were prepared to give their own life.
“I— I’m going home! Let me go home! Now!”
A woman in the audience chose to make her disapproval heard, and her scream triggered a whirlwind of panic in the theatre. Many stood up from their seats and hurried to the passageway. They pushed each other out of the way, heading for the exit. Resounding screams, yells and angry voices, all filled the back of the room…
And then, one by one, the actors who had been until now playing the roles of the kingdom’s people on stage removed their costumes, revealing that they all carried weapons in their hands.
They surrounded the spectators who were trying to escape. The next moment, part of the theatre floor seemed to have given way, and every single one of these spectators disappeared into the abyss.
It had all taken place in an instant. Only their screams trailed off and lingered inside the theatre… though only for a bit. Soon, silence returned.
I couldn’t move.
“P-Professor!”
He dashed towards the stage. Without a second thought, I followed right behind him.
A man ran past us and made it first. Wait, this was…
A massive chest… A solid pompadour… No doubt, he was…
“I am Inspector Grosky, of Scotland Yard!”
He jumped on stage, and in a flash, he had already twisted the masked man around and cuffed his wrist, keeping the other end of the handcuffs around his own.
“I had heard that a shady deal was going to take place at the Crown Petone Theatre, and so I had decided to attend while undercover. But I was far from expecting this to be a trade using lives!”
The inspector took out his police badge with a practised hand, showed it around, then put it back in his jacket again. As soon as he turned to the audience, he shouted as loudly as a stage actor:
“Everyone, you are all good to go. The criminal has just been apprehended by Inspector Grosky of the Yard!”
Now that he was in the spotlight, he proudly boasted his achievement, with his chest protruding even further than usual.
“Inspector, are you sure this is the case?”
I think the inspector did not appreciate that the professor’s words had interrupted his moment of triumph.
“What the— Is that you, Layton?”
“It has been a while.”
The inspector looked down at me. “And you must be…”
He remembered me. We had first met during the ‘Specter’s Flute’ incident in Misthallery.
“I’m Luke Triton,” I responded.
At that moment, the masked man’s hand suddenly twitched. Then his entire body went limp… limp… limp… The way he moved was not human. It sent shivers down my spine.
“What on Earth—!?”
The masked man’s body then began to swell and expand, like a balloon.
The inspector’s eyes widened in horror. “A-a puppet!?”
Meanwhile, the theatre was hit by strong vibrations. There was another scream in the hall, but one much deeper than before. This scream was made of cracking noises, getting louder and louder…
I looked straight up with a start when I found the origin of that sound.
“Professor, the ceiling!”
Through some sort of unseen mechanism, the sections of the theatre making up its ceiling opened up one by one, slowly revealing the night sky. The professor was just as shocked when he saw.
At that moment… The masked man had completely turned into some sort of mixture between a puppet and a balloon, and Inspector Grosky floated in the air, swept alongside it, since they were still handcuffed together.
“Inspector!”
The professor and I rushed to catch him, but he rose up into the air too quickly. The next moment, the balloon collided with the pointy end of a chandelier, and was pierced. With the force of the gases that rushed out from the tear, the inspector and the puppet both flew around at high speed… and quickly disappeared into the expanding night sky.
As the professor’s face contorted in regret, a deep laugh suddenly echoed throughout the whole theatre. It was the same voice that had pretended to be the puppet. I could see it now… The puppet had just been a decoy, but the one hiding behind it was very real.
His voice rang out happily, as if the opera had never ended, and he were announcing the beginning of a new act.
“And now, ladies and gentlemen, let us sail along the path to eternal life!”
Sail…?
Once again the theatre shook violently, and screams filled the area.
“Luke!”
“Yes!”
The professor and I rushed out of the theatre. When I opened the door and jumped out to the front, the sight was so unexpected that I screamed.
The bridge connecting the Crown Petone to the coast was just about to collapse with a roar.
There was some more rumbling… and the last debris fell into the sea, one stone at a time.
This was no longer a theatre. The building sped up, glided over the sea, and started rapidly moving away from land.
The professor couldn’t help but mumble in shock: “The theatre…”
“It turned into a giant ship!”
I never thought that this beautiful theatre was actually meant to move across the sea like this!
I could only stare at the coastline, which was getting smaller and smaller. Soon, several other spectators came out of the hall, which had now become the deck of the ship, and stared in stunned panic at the sea that was surrounding us.
“Oh my God…”
These had been the words of the man who claimed earlier that he only had six months left to live.
“I can’t believe it…”
And this had come out of the mouth of an old man who was dressed like the captain of a luxury ship. Indeed, he seemed to be at a loss regarding what he should do.
At that moment, a muscular young man jumped onto the deck railing.
“Hey, you! What do you think you’re doing?”
The woman who stopped him from jumping was gorgeous. She looked to be quite well-off, perhaps to the point that she could afford to go out watching operas every day.
“I’ll just dive and swim to the shore!” the man replied to her.
I wondered if he could be some sort of athlete, with the energy and ease he showed when he jumped on the railing…
“That would not be a wise course of action.”
As he said this, the professor pointed down below. Around us, the sea was teeming with sharks. They were deliberately circling the Crown Petone, coveting their prey.
“I never thought that sharks would enter the waters around here, this rarely ever happens…”
The old captain who had said this twisted his neck so he could see.
So these sharks had been released into these waters on purpose? To stop us from escaping…?
All of this had been carefully prepared from the start, in meticulous detail. Once again, I felt a chill run down my spine.
At that moment, the sea breeze brought a song to my ears.
A song…? At a time like this?
But soon, it became inaudible. I wondered if it was just my imagination…
With this in mind, I followed the professor back inside the theatre.

Another Get To Know Me Game!
Tagged by @windsweptinred, this was so much fun to do! Love seeing a new version
Who was your first fictional crush?:
Hmmmm, instinct says Tuxedo Mask! I'm sure I had other fictional crushes but that's the one I most vividly remember. That and Xanatos from Gargoyles djdoaisjdoaij.
What’s the first colour you think of when I tell you to think of a colour?:
Purple!
Which fanfiction emotionally scarred you and still makes you shudder to this day?:
Oh there's...a few lmao. I have a tendency to read fics that horrify me for fun, and since we're on the webbed site that likes to judge people for using the Dead Dove tag, or any of the main Archive Warning tags, I'd rather not put those fics on blast. But I have read some truly brilliantly written and fucked up fics from the Fantastic Beasts fandom, that's all I'll say.
I’m coming to your house for dinner, non-negotiable, what are you making me?:
Japanese curry with chicken! That or Fettucine Alfredo. I like to overstuff my guests with food and those are my two go to meals for company!
Do you prefer lions or kangaroos?:
Lions! I love kangaroos too, but my love for cats, especially big cats, prevails.
Which fictional villain do you brush past the glaringly obvious issues for because you really like them?:
Uhhhh....almost all of them??? jkjkjk
In all seriousness though, I think my big ones I can think of are Shigaraki and Dabi from BNHA. Are they both awful, ruthless people who only want to cause pain and suffering to all who have hurt them? Yes. Do I want them to keep causing even more pain and suffering, even to my favorite hero characters, as a treat? Also yes.
I hate to caveat that in no way do I think any of of their actions are justified and that the villains should win and then the world would be a better place yada yada yada but well. Woobifying villains is a thing and also why I stay out of the fandom because I cannot stand my faves being defanged like that. Let my faves be horrible people aoijdosijad.
What would accompany your picture in the Burn Book in Mean Girls?:
Either the "Mexican Asian" (I'm Filipino-American, and sadly this is a thing I was called a lot lmao) or "The Hugger." I know a shit ton of people judged me a bit in school for being a hugger because...idk, people thought hugs were weird lmao. But joke's on them, I still enjoy hugs and Mr. Seiya hugs me all the time!
How many days would you last in the universe of your favourite fandom?:
Uhhhhhh considering no one really dies in Pokemon...I'd be fine lmao.
In Sandman???? Also would probably be fine since I'm based in the States and also many many miles away from the Corinthian's hunting grounds 🤣
Have you heard of Mischief Theatre?:
Only the name :(
Do you feel sorry for Medusa?:
Yes and no. I do feel bad the foundation of her story was be a woman killed for the glory of a man. And then to be remembered only as a horror, a monster to scare people with.
The modern interpretation of her story is absolutely fascinating to me and while it is still a tragic story, I absolutely love what she's come to represent. I love that her story has been rewritten to be a story of survival, of perseverance, of power even.
Which song makes you think of your OTP?:
Ooooooh there's so many! And of course now that I'm being put on the spot I can't think of any 🤣🤣
Starlight by Muse is definitely a Dreamling song to me, so much so that I wrote a fic with the lyrics in the title, so I'm going to roll with that one!
Which song makes you disassociate and daydream the fastest?:
Oh lord, honestly any Taylor Swift song will do this to me lmao. Lately, I've been drifting back to Would've, Could've, Should've, so we're going to go with that one!
No pressure tagging: @tj-dragonblade @bazzybelle @verminetroglodyte @tryan-a-bex @4typercent and anyone else who wants to play!

Egg headcanons! (Yes more) ((and yes this is if everything was happy and all eggs were alive))
Winner of 26/11/23 poll
JuanaFlippa is allergic to 20+ things (I can list them but that may or may not be overkill)
When Leo has panic attacks, Foolish or Vegetta or Roier will rock her and pet her hair to ground her (Def not projecting)
Pomme, Leo, and Sunny are lefthanded
Richas is ambidextrous
Pepito also has allergies. Pepito has juvenile osteoporosis and chronic pain, and on-and-off uses a wheelchair.
The Hope egg is named Tereza, and A1's real name is Ignacio.
Bobby is an empath
Tallulah has a small collection of photos of Wilbur and his friends from before the island, to recreate when they get out.
HOBBIES
Tilín, Bobby, Chayanne, and Empanada do wrestling
Chayanne is one of those kids whose in literally every program. Like, he does sword/fence fighting, archery, wrestling, kickboxing, baseball, futbol (soccer), martial arts, leatherwork, bookbinding, everything you can think of.
Dapper tap dances
Tallulah crochets and taught Wilbur and Philza to
Tallulah also figureskates
Leonarda does hiphop, tap, ballet, and latin dance
Sunny can do the BEST nails. Like. Seriously talented (in Tubbo's eyes) Example below.
Tumblr media
Trump liked to work in animal shelters, and took the best care of all of them
MISC AGAIN
When they have to wash it, Empanada, Richas, and Dapper all go over to Felps' place to have it washed because he has a similar hair type and does it really well.
JuanaFlippa, Slime, and Mari all have matching gas masks. Juana's from her allergies, and Slime and Mariana because of Purgatory
Sunny has a rhotacism
Ramón has a really good fashion sense, and helps Fit out when he goes on dates with Pac.
When Tilín and Bobby wrestle, they try to drag Pepito in but he's too weak to fight (PROJECTING AGAIN, my cousins never wrestled with me because I'm disabled)
Pomme has like, whole bookshelves full of her journals.
Pomme is Muslim, and transitions from a shayla and a hijab, very rarely a niqab depending on the situation (if this isn't like. Accurate. To the Muslim religion tell me, I'll fix it. I don't wanna offend anyone.)
Richas just RAMS people with his forehead when he's playing
Half the eggs have bird wings, while the other half have normal dragon wings. Pomme is the exception, she has butterfly wings
Richas has no sense of personal space, due to sleeping in the Brazilians sleep room.
Tallulah loves Hamilton
Bobby has palilalia
The whole island has a theatre night once in a while, where the eggs act out movies and shows.
Dapper is a god of death devotee, as is Badboyhalo. I have so many headcanons about what this entails for them, rituals, their exact type of devotee, ect. I'll shut up tho
Carre taught Ramón to skateboard, so Ramón always has those knee pads on. Also he never wears a helmet, no matter how much Fit begs him to.
All of the eggs do speak, but not often. They mostly communicate through AAC devices which serve as tablets and also communicaters. They also use sign language. Also, they all have notebooks to elite in. So to be more accurate, the signs all around are the eggs papers littering the ground
Sunny has chronic migraines and headaches, so she's always wearing her sunglasses for that reason.
Sunny trailer park princess canon
Poncho Pepito. See below.
Tumblr media
Also like a jumpsuit. Under. Idk.
Tumblr media
You know that post that says that Pepito has those like children glasses? Yeah. That.
Tallulah likes Pepsi over Coke. Chayanne likes Coke over Pepsi. Sunny doesn't drink soda, besides ginger ale.
Sunny keeps her hair above her neck, because she hates the feeling on her collarbones. (projecting again)
She's literally stretched out shirt collars to being unwearable to stop it from touching her neck (me af)
Empanada has like. Neopolitan hair. Brown, pink, blond/white. She has vitiligo, and is black/japanese. Em's got like, onyx eyes? Like ddu. I forgot the English word. But they sparkle like obsidian, kind of.
Dapper loves watching Skeppy videos, but they reach the island very late
You know Wilbur's new album? He sent it to Phil, and he got it 2 weeks late (cuz international processing or whatever) and then Tallulah got to listen! She loves it! Her favorite songs are Glass Chalet and Dropshipped Cat Shirt.
The longest Sunny's hair has ever been is to her shoulders, aka when she first met Tubbo. She had it up in a bun to make sure it won't touch her skin. Sunny immediately asked him for a haircut on her first night at his place.
Tumblr media
AGE/HEIGHT
Chayanne: 11, 4'2
Dapper: 10, 4'5
Ramón: 10, 4'6
Leonarda: 9, 4'8
Trump: 9, 4'2
JuanaFlippa: 9, 4'8
Tilín: 9, 4'3
Bobby: 8, 4'4
Tallulah: 8, 4'11
Richarlyson: 8, 4'4
Pomme: 7, 4'2
Sunny: 6, 3'9
Empanada: 6, 3'11
Pepito: 6, 3'2
MISC
Fit sometimes tells stories to Ramón about Schlatt. Ramón, so far, is absolutely infatuated. Big Guy is like a God, an idol to Ramón. (Did anyone watch his stream today? Just me? Alright)
Sunny has a cleft lip/palate
When Leo can't sleep, all the capybaras curl up around her with her in the middle, like a little nest.
All the eggs fucking love Pokémon. With a few exceptions (Ramón, Tallulah, Sunny)
Ramón likes blackjack instead. Or Egyptian Rat Screw.
Tallulah likes boardgames (she's a 'Sorry' lover)
Sunny likes Yu-Gi-Oh! better. Or Magic: The Gathering
Speaking of which, they all have those broadcast TVs, and very much live like in 2009 when you were running around during ad breaks, and dove back through furniture to not miss ur show. They can only watch Fed-approved-channels.
Pepito has a stutter and a lisp
Ramón is one of those kids who blends everything. Like. Spaghetti? Into the blender. Smoothie. Turkey? Into the blender. Smoothie.
His favorite is an onion, lettuce, mayo, ham, very thin cuts of shark meat, sweet gherkin, spicy pickle relish, and pineapple (I once knew someone who actually ate this. Daily. At lunch. Mauro you're now the inspiration for a minecraft egg) Ramón just blends it and goes lol
Welp. I think that's it. Thanks lol. I'd love to hear any of yours.

Speaking of dreams. I had a really weird one where Lotor and Keith entered an elevator except there was, for whatever reason, a bed in the elevator. One of those traditional Japanese ones. If you pressed a button it heated up which Keith was really pleased about. And then a door opened in the side which lead the elevator to a different elevator except this one looked like a dining room. And then the elevator started moving except instead of moving straight up it went around the building and headed up and Keith was like “this isn’t how an elevator is supposed to work” and Lotor ripped off a theatre mask (sad) he was suddenly wearing to reveal another theatre mask (happy) and he said “jokes on you that’s exactly how they’re supposed to work” and then they both looked at me and I woke up.

𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦- 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨
Tumblr media
Matt and his girlfriend Audrina were known for their personalities and spirit. Their followers on YouTube eagerly awaited their next travel vlog, and this time, the couple decided to take their audience on an international journey to the enchanting city of Kyoto, Japan.
The video began with Matt, holding the camera, flashing his signature smile. "Hey, everyone! Matt here, and today we've got something special for you. Audrina and I are in Kyoto, and we can't wait to explore this beautiful city with you guys!"
Audrina, with her infectious energy, added, "That's right! Kyoto is known for its rich history, stunning temples, and delicious food. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure!"
"Also, Nick and Chris were supposed to join us as well, but they had some stuff to do so they are back in Boston right now," Audrina said.
The couple started their day at the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha, a Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates. Matt captured the mesmerizing sight while Audrina shared interesting facts about the history and significance of the shrine.
As they strolled through the gates, Audrina said, "It's like walking through a portal to another world. The atmosphere here is so serene and spiritual."
After exploring the shrine, they made their way to the historic Gion district, known for its traditional wooden machiya houses and the chance to spot geishas. Matt and Audrina wandered through the narrow streets, occasionally stopping to try local snacks and interact with friendly locals.
"This is incredible," Matt exclaimed. "Every corner feels like a snapshot from a different era. And the food! It's a taste bud explosion!"
Audrina chuckled, "Matt's officially a foodie convert, folks!"
The couple then decided to take a break at a traditional tea house, where they experienced a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The serene ambience and meticulous rituals left them in awe.
"Kyoto has this magical ability to transport you through time," Audrina mused. "I feel like we're living in a blend of past and present."
Later in the video, Matt and Audrina visited the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, capturing the towering bamboo stalks that created an ethereal atmosphere. They took a boat ride along the Hozugawa River, immersing themselves in the natural beauty surrounding them.
As the day transitioned to evening, the couple explored the bustling Nishiki Market, where they sampled various street foods and engaged with the vendors. Audrina, always the lively one, attempted to speak a few Japanese phrases, eliciting smiles from the locals.
"We may not be fluent," Matt said, "but the people here are so warm and welcoming. It's like they're sharing a piece of their culture with us."
The vlog concluded with a breathtaking view of the Kiyomizu-Dera temple illuminated against the night sky. Matt and Audrina stood hand in hand, sharing their reflections on the day.
"What an incredible experience," Matt said, his eyes reflecting gratitude. "Kyoto has stolen a piece of our hearts."
Audrina added, "And we're so grateful we could share this journey with all of you. Thanks for joining us on this adventure!"
The video ended with a heartfelt thank you message to their subscribers, promising more exciting content from their future travels. Matt and Audrina's Kyoto vlog garnered an outpouring of positive comments, with fans expressing their admiration for the couple's genuine enthusiasm and the immersive experience they provided.
Little did their audience know that this journey was just the beginning of Matt and Audrina's global escapades, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating the next destination on their YouTube channel.
In the days that followed, Matt and Audrina continued to explore Kyoto's hidden gems, capturing moments that were both enchanting and humorous. They attended a traditional Noh theatre performance, where Audrina attempted to don a Noh mask and showcase her acting skills, much to the amusement of both the locals and their YouTube audience.
The couple also delved into Kyoto's modern side, exploring the vibrant Gion-Shijo district with its trendy boutiques, quirky cafes, and innovative street art. Matt, with his camera always at the ready, highlighted the city's seamless blend of tradition and modernity.
One of the highlights of their extended stay was a visit to the Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Against the backdrop of a clear blue sky, the golden structure shimmered, leaving the couple in awe of its beauty. They interviewed a knowledgeable guide who shared captivating stories about the temple's history and significance, creating a deeper connection between the viewers and Kyoto's cultural tapestry.
As the days turned into nights, Matt and Audrina explored Kyoto's diverse culinary scene, trying everything from savoury ramen in local noodle shops to delicate sushi at a traditional omakase restaurant. Their genuine reactions to the flavours and textures added a personal touch to the vlog, making viewers feel as if they were sharing the meal with the couple.
The couple also embraced the local customs, participating in a traditional yukata-wearing experience. Viewers witnessed their comical attempts to tie the intricate obi belts, creating a lighthearted atmosphere. Audrina couldn't help but tease Matt about his "yukata fashion show," showcasing the different poses he struck while trying to embody the spirit of Kyoto.
The Kyoto vlog series continued to captivate their audience, not just with the picturesque scenery but with the couple's dynamic and playful banter. Matt and Audrina's chemistry and authenticity resonated with viewers, turning their travel vlogs into a virtual journey for fans across the globe.
Before leaving Kyoto, the couple decided to organize a meetup with their local followers. The turnout was beyond their expectations, with fans expressing gratitude for bringing a piece of Kyoto to them through their videos. Matt and Audrina spent hours chatting, taking photos, and sharing travel tips, creating a genuine connection with their audience beyond the digital realm.
As Matt and Audrina bid farewell to Kyoto, the last moments of their vlog featured a montage of memories, set to a sentimental soundtrack. The couple expressed their deep appreciation for the city and its people, promising to return one day. Their Kyoto adventure had not only showcased the beauty of the destination but had also solidified the bond between the couple and their ever-growing YouTube family.
Back home, as they read through the countless comments expressing admiration for their Kyoto series, Matt and Audrina brainstormed their next destination. The world was full of possibilities, and their audience eagerly awaited the next chapter in their global escapades. The couple's YouTube channel had become a virtual passport, allowing viewers to explore the world alongside them, one captivating destination at a time.
In the days that followed, Matt and Audrina's Kyoto escapade took an unexpected turn when they decided to try their hand at sumo wrestling. The couple found themselves clad in oversized sumo suits, much to the amusement of the locals and their online audience.
As Matt waddled around in his sumo suit, struggling to maintain balance, Audrina couldn't contain her laughter. "I didn't know sumo wrestling required this much fashion sense," she quipped, pointing at Matt's attempts to strike a pose.
Undeterred, Matt declared, "They call me the Sumo Sturniolo! I've been training for this my whole life, in my dreams, that is."
Their sumo match turned into a comical spectacle, with both Matt and Audrina taking exaggerated tumbles and executing unintentional somersaults. The onlookers erupted in laughter, and even the sumo trainers had a hard time keeping a straight face.
After the hilarious sumo showdown, the couple decided to explore Kyoto's quirky side. They stumbled upon a cat cafe, where the resident felines seemed more interested in napping than entertaining their human guests. Audrina attempted to engage a particularly disinterested cat in a game of string chase, while Matt struggled to resist adopting every adorable furball in sight.
"They have the right idea," Matt joked, gesturing towards the snoozing cats. "Napping should be an Olympic sport, and I think we'd be gold medalists."
Their cat cafe adventure continued with Audrina showcasing her "purrfect" cat impressions, which left the cafe staff and patrons in stitches. Matt joined in, attempting a catwalk (literally) that had everyone in tears of laughter.
The laughter continued as the couple explored Kyoto's vibrant street markets. Audrina, with her infectious energy, convinced Matt to participate in a local dance-off. The impromptu street performance attracted a crowd, and soon, Matt found himself showcasing some unexpected dance moves.
"I didn't know I had these moves in me," Matt confessed, laughing at his antics. "I guess Kyoto brings out the hidden dancer in all of us."
As the vlog continued, the couple's misadventures included getting lost in translation while attempting to order a traditional dish and accidentally stumbling into a traditional tea ceremony while searching for a bathroom.
Audrina, with her quick wit, quipped, "When in doubt, just follow the scent of freshly brewed tea. It's the universal sign for 'restroom this way.'"
The Kyoto vlog series became a hilarious rollercoaster of cultural encounters, goofy antics, and unexpected twists. Viewers not only marvelled at the beauty of Kyoto but also found themselves laughing along with Matt and Audrina's delightful escapades.
Back home, as they read through the comments filled with laughter emojis and witty remarks, Matt and Audrina couldn't help but reflect on the unforgettable moments Kyoto had gifted them. Their YouTube channel had become a source of not just travel inspiration but also unbridled joy and laughter, proving that a touch of humour could turn any adventure into a memory to cherish.
Returning home after their Kyoto adventure, Matt and Audrina found themselves surrounded by suitcases, memories, and a mountain of laundry. As they unpacked, Matt couldn't resist teasing Audrina about her souvenir shopping spree.
"Did you leave any Kyoto merchandise for the locals, Audrina?" he chuckled, holding up a comically large paper fan featuring a cartoonish depiction of a sumo wrestler.
Audrina defended herself with a mock gasp. "I had to get something to remember our sumo wrestling debut! Plus, this fan is the perfect accessory for when you're feeling 'extra' at home."
Their banter continued as they settled down to review the comments on their Kyoto vlog series. The laughter that had echoed through the streets of Kyoto found its way into their living room as they scrolled through messages from their fans.
"Looks like people enjoyed the sumo showdown," Audrina pointed out, reading a comment that declared Matt the "Sumo Sturniolo" as the internet's new favourite wrestling sensation.
Matt grinned, "Maybe I should consider a career change. WWE, here I come!"
The comment section was filled with praise for their humour, genuine reactions, and the unexpected dance-off. One fan wrote, "I haven't laughed this much in ages! You two are the comedy duo we never knew we needed."
Audrina chimed in, "Well if our mission was to spread joy and laughter, I think Kyoto was a smashing success."
As they read through messages from fans who shared their own travel stories, Matt and Audrina couldn't help but feel a sense of connection with their virtual community. They laughed at funny anecdotes shared by followers who were inspired to try sumo wrestling or imitate Audrina's "purrfect" cat impressions.
"We have the coolest community ever," Matt remarked, genuinely touched by the camaraderie they had built online. "It's like having a bunch of friends join us on every adventure."
Audrina nodded in agreement, "Absolutely. Whether it's exploring Kyoto or attempting to cook weird recipes, our viewers make every experience better."
The couple decided to engage with their fans in real time, hosting a live Q&A session. Viewers flooded the chat with questions about their favourite moments, behind-the-scenes bloopers, and even suggestions for their next destination.
"It's like planning our next adventure with a thousand travel buddies," Audrina exclaimed, typing responses to the rapid-fire questions.
Matt added, "And who knows, maybe our viewers will get to decide where we go next. The world is our oyster, and our audience is the compass."
As they wrapped up the live session, Matt and Audrina reflected on the whirlwind of laughter, cultural exploration, and unexpected antics that had defined their Kyoto journey. Little did they know that their unique blend of humour and authenticity would continue to resonate with viewers, turning their YouTube channel into a hub of joy and shared experiences.
The Kyoto adventure had not only enriched their own lives but had also created a lasting bond with their virtual community. With suitcases unpacked and memories immortalized in pixels, Matt and Audrina eagerly anticipated the next chapter in their global escapades, knowing that their audience would be right there with them, ready to laugh, explore, and embrace the unexpected.
In the days that followed their return, Matt and Audrina found themselves brainstorming their next travel destination, fueled by the suggestions pouring in from their audience. The lively debate between the couple on where to go next became a mini-series of its own, with fans eagerly voicing their opinions in the comments.
Audrina playfully exclaimed, "I vote for a tropical paradise! Beaches, palm trees, and endless sunshine. What do you think, Matt?"
Matt, in a mock serious tone, responded, "Well, I was thinking Antarctica, you know, mix it up a bit. Penguins and snowstorms, anyone?"
Their banter sparked a flood of location suggestions, ranging from exotic islands to hidden gems off the beaten path. The couple decided to turn the decision-making process into an interactive poll for their viewers, letting the audience play a role in choosing the next adventure.
As the votes rolled in, Matt and Audrina couldn't help but marvel at the enthusiasm of their followers. The sense of shared excitement and anticipation created an electric atmosphere as if the entire online community was collectively packing their bags for the next journey.
While waiting for the poll results, Matt and Audrina took the opportunity to create some light-hearted content at home. They ventured into attempting to cook traditional Japanese dishes they had discovered in Kyoto, with hilariously disastrous results. Matt, clad in a comically oversized apron, attempted to master the art of sushi rolling, while Audrina's attempt at making mochi turned into a sticky, giggly mess.
"It's a good thing we're better at exploring than we are at cooking," Audrina laughed, wiping flour from her face.
Their kitchen misadventures became an instant hit with fans, who eagerly shared their cooking mishaps in the comments. The couple realized that the shared laughter over burnt rice and misshapen sushi rolls was just another way their virtual community could come together.
The poll results were in, and the next destination was revealed - Bali, Indonesia. Excitement bubbled in the comments as fans expressed their anticipation for the upcoming adventures in the tropical paradise. Matt and Audrina wasted no time in planning their itinerary, with promises of beach exploration, traditional Balinese experiences, and, of course, more hilarious escapades.
As the couple geared up for their Bali adventure, the anticipation was palpable. Their audience, now invested not just in the destinations but in the couple's infectious enthusiasm and humour, eagerly counted down the days until the next vlog dropped.
The Kyoto series had not only taken Matt and Audrina on a memorable journey through Japan but had also solidified their connection with their audience. The laughter, the shared experiences, and the anticipation for what lay ahead created a sense of community that extended far beyond the confines of a YouTube channel.
And so, with suitcases packed once again and the promise of tropical paradise on the horizon, Matt and Audrina embarked on their next adventure, ready to explore Bali, create more laughter, and weave another chapter into the vibrant tapestry of their online travel escapades. Little did they know that the journey ahead held not just sun-soaked beaches and lush landscapes but a tapestry of surprises, humour, and shared moments that would continue to bind them with their ever-growing global audience.

A Japanese YuriPe primer originally created in 2021. The author still periodically updates it (last update was January 2024).
Last night I stumbled on this Japanese primer of all the instances Yuri Petrov/Lunatic appear in TaiBani media and collectibles (not including the many articles, interviews and various other materials from sources such as magazines and other publications).
There were also outside refs I was not aware of, like the "Phantom of the Opera" being inspo for Lunatic's mask. (Ugh I was obsessed with Musical Theatre and read the original novel as a kid and now I find it cheesy af but anyway...) And the short story "Signal" by Vsevolod Mikhailovich Garshin (link to Japanese translation from primer). I want to double check the sources saying these were legitimate references before I look further into them. Possible design and interview materials from Katsura and Nishida or other TaiBani staff.
Well am I ever pleased that my obsessive ass has found most of these on my own and already translated a bunch of them (thanks to friends in the fandom always feeding me with the raws as well as my own ever growing collection) 😊🥰
Also incredibly happy I caught on to the nuances like being ridiculously polite in public but possessing a Mean Girl personality in private (like when I translated the Hero's Day stuff and previously spoke about Audio Drama 6, and other media where it appears such as the novelizations).
Don't know if the primer is worth a translation on my Tumblr, but I may do it anyway and link the bits I've already translated.
Also they pointed out the coolest tidbit that this may be his signature as featured on the DXF box. I didn't even notice it was there when I first got it!

Anyway today I am feeling super validated as a Huge Yuri/Luna Fan today 😊🥰

One last thing to throw in:
Sobs Luna's broken mask is in this upcoming figure. 😭😭😭😢🙃

(this is inspired by @terminatorbuns , they posted a great essay, I def recommend checking it out !)
so I find Shiver to be such a fascinating character, I really enjoy her. at first, I was very worried at the prospect of her being a Marie clone due to how she first acted and the way the fandom reacted to her. but there was this one moment during the rocket sequences in the story mode that completely shifted the way I view her and made me begin to love her. it was a moment of pure sillyness, just her being herself, using made-up words to get the message across. and I really understood that, for reasons I'll go over in this post.
so my point in this post is: I believe that Shiver is pretty decently autistic coded, but in different ways that Marina was (I adore her too). they portray things differently, act in specific ways that really gave me a hint that there was something more. and maybe this is all projection, but I think there's a reason I found such solace in them. let's begin !
Shivers Masking
so we know that Shiver seems to do well in the public eye, but I think that can be chalked up largely to the thought that they have simply learned the mannerisms of a social sphere very well. in reference to terminatorbuns' post, we see that they have a strong yearning to be on the TV, to be seen by the public eye. I feel like this yearning is fueled by a want to be seen as "normal", allistic in the public eye. they don't want to be seen as strange, like how I believe they must've felt often as an undiagnosed autistic child. when you grow up not knowing exactly what's wrong with you, you tend to lean into what people expect of you instead. this often means a very polite display. this explains their more "high and mighty" demeanor. but still, because of the lack of understanding of social dynamics and the likes, this learning and portrayal of someone more "normal" still appears off. they speak in a very dramatic and clearly off center way, similar to that of old literature or theatre. they learned what it meant to be higher class from those types of medias, and they replicated it in hopes of it working just as well for them. but unfortunately, this led to more of the same societal strangeness.
so he builds this persona, an act he can use around others to get around and reach the goals he's been yearning for. this ends up working well when it's combined with the other privileges he has, being seen as a conventionally attractive Japanese coded girl. in my headcanons this isn't exactly true, but it all ties back to that masking. autistic people oftentimes have a difficult relationship with gender. you can see, even despite his efforts, that Shiver is fairly androgynous.
both of these points lead us to believe that this whole portrayal of Shiver is simply a mask she puts on, a facade to make people believe she is what they want her to be. (not to mention the blatantly obvious shark mask metaphor.. I'll touch more on that later.)
The way she acts around Others
now we look at her relationship within the Deep Cut trio. yet again alluding back to terminatorbuns' excellent analysis, we can see that Frye and Big Man give Shiver a special place where they can just be themselves. they put on a more villainous act, the opportunity to display those more agitated and harsh behaviours. they are free to unmask around their closest friends because of the trust they've built up over the years. Fryes ambition and naturally villainous behaviours help probe that type of action out of Shiver too. she replicates it, but in a more open way. a free way to express herself, when she's constantly stuck behind a mask that's exhausting to keep up.
I think the relationship she has with Master Mega has a lot of potential too. sharks have always been close with her family, them being known as tamers, her carrying down the legend. she feels a connection to these sharks, she feels a sense of herself in them. they're fierce, but can be calm and loving as well. they take work to tame, they burst with untapped energy. just like her. I feel she has such a connection to them because they're nonhumanoid as well. they don't hold the same social constructs that inkfish society does, so she doesn't have to mask around them. she encourages them to do their best, and they give it in return. (this also ties in to the trend of dehumanization that happens with autistic people. they find solace in nonhuman things because they feel they better understand them. Shiver considers herself partially a shark, due to both this and her connections. you could even consider sharks and shark taming to be her special interest.)
he tries so hard to appear scary or frightening when around New Agent 3 because he wants to make a new mask for himself, one a bit closer to his authentic self. he over exaggerates this new persona to create a proper sense of self- one that could help with getting rid of that social metaphorical makeup. we can see him trying his hardest, especially in his battle with na3. he relies on one of his longest friend and possible mentor for help, because in all honesty he can't do it on his own. this more aggressive demeanor is natural for Frye, not for him. he's trying desperately to find a way to fit in, to appear strong, but it all falls flat. I think one of the (totally made up by me) reasons why Shiver wears his mask differently from Frye is because all the trios masks symbolize different things. for Frye, it's her want to fit in in a world not centered for her, for Big Man it's his want to seem tough despise all the rest of him not matching that yearning, and for Shiver it's the mask of his own self. but see- he wears the mask slightly to the side, not completely covering his face like Frye. I believe this is symbolism for the fact he's trying to unmask, to take away that crutch, to be themselves in front of friends and even foes. because remember, this entire time he's been trying to be scary. to be a villain, to just express those built up emotions. his struggle throughout the entire battle proves that he wasn't built out for that facade, just as he wasn't built for that social "higher than you" facade either. the best way I can describe it is... he just wants to be soft and squishy.
Unmasked Shiver
going back to one of my points from the intro, I think one of the moments we see Shiver most unmasked is during the finale sequences. we can see as the trio get closer to the NSS, forming closer bonds now that they have allied. all of them are starting to loosen up, but especially Shiver.
when trying to help the team, we can see that Shiver has the strangest approach to things. Big Man and Frye are used to their antics, so they understand what messages they're trying to convey. however the NSS... not so much.
you can see how much Shiver is trying to help, but the lack of full understanding of social queues and the likes makes it difficult for things to properly get across. I feel this may be one of the reasons Marie didn't like them for so long. she doesn't understand why they act the way they do, those social hints are being missed because she simply does not understand them. that can be annoying to allistics (which is unfortunate but. not the point). but once she learns for motivations, their goals, she comes to be more understanding.
overtime, Shiver starts to loosen up and lose that facade in favour of a more realistic self, all because of the community they have managed to become a part of.
Messy conclusion
we don't have much development right now, as it's only been a few months since release, but I find it very enjoyable to dissect my favorite characters like this. I hope we get to see more of Shivers unmasked self, with her goofy attitude and adoration for sharks (more Master Mega lore pleaaaase). all in all, she's fascinating, and because of projection or not I find her to be pretty autism coded <3
