Official Thoughts on BOTW2 Footage
- The malice looks like it envelops Link's right arm in the very beginning. During the trailer he's got an arm that looks like Sheikah tech - so maybe some trauma/prosthetic? It will probably link with the Sheikah Slate.
- More dehydrated Ganon let's goooo
- Zelda looks boss with her short hair, but she also falls into a canyon or pit or something, and is reaching out for help (most likely from Link, as established by the first trailer where they're exploring caves together).
- Super boss music ayyyy
- Link skydiving towards floating??? ruins
- Link's got himself some new clothes, and they're actually the traditional green - maybe from a past hero or something?
- More paragliding Link, but he's slightly below the islands he's heading towards, so probably more updrafts and stuff.
- LINK WITH HIS HAIR DOWNNN
- It looks like there's some structures around - so maybe a lost civilization or one that still exists, just in hiding?
- A new monster that looks like it's made of mosiacs. It has a bunch of eye-shaped symbols on it
- More confined bokoblin camp on top of a stone talus
- Those bokoblins got themselves horns on their foreheads (they be unicorns now???)
- Link's arm closeup that looks like it's glowing, and has the sheikah slate thing where the light wraps around it.
- Link uses his arm to do stasis on a spiked ball coming towards him, so probably gonna use that to replace the sheikah slate as some sort of prosthetic (again).
- The world went black and white (maybe a design aesthetic choice for this trailer, maybe an actual mechanic?)
- It looks like he stasis-ed an entire chain of spiked balls so rune functionality ++?
- Was that a giant fire/rock hand that just smacked Link in a cave?
- WAIT DID LINK JUST USE A FLAMETHROWER OR WAS THAT THE MONSTER?
- Water splooshing in reverse? Plus reversed music?
- Did Link just reverse himself? Green glowy particles? Into the ground and then on top of it? Did he just go through the ground?
- The caves in the first trailer probably underneath Hyrule Castle cause now Hyrule Castle's levitating
- Nice calm music for the scenery NOT INCLUDING THE GIANT FLOATING CASTLE IN THE DISTANCE WITH MALICE POURING OUT OF THE PIT UNDERNEATH IT
- The reverse words you hear while Hyrule Castle is doing it's floating thing sound something like "Help us, save us," something along those lines
- ARE THOSE SKYLOFT RUINS MAYBE???
- Link and Zelda look like they're separated? Probably mostly gameplay through Link considering that's what the trailers focused on and I mean Link do be kinda the hero
- Still holding out hope for some Zelda gameplay tho
- Whats happening to the champions??? And like everyone??? Impa? Purah? Sidon? Hello?
- A friend just pointed out that in the shots of Hyrule, you can't see the Divine Beasts nor the towers. U h oh

Breath of the Wild Sequel, Trailer #2 notes/analysis:
AAAAAHHH IT EXISTS
Malice attacks Link’s right arm. Can’t tell whether this is before it has been altered by the glowy hand.
Dehydrated Dorf is...falling? Laughing?
Zelda falls a LOT farther than originally implied. Perhaps she is caught early on and then gets truly dropped?
Skyward Sword-like falling with style! And floating islands!!!
New Link look seems more, idk, feral? Wilder hair, half a shirt and tunic, and leg wrap sandals. Also a cool new shield design! And some ribbons for the paraglider!
Lots of yellow trees, and some paths, and what appear to be like shinto gates. Very curious what that big structure is; seems temple-y.
HELLO STONE GOLEM FROGGISH LAMP FRIEND! Who are you!!?
lol bokoblins have bigger horns and moblins have lil helmets
THE BOKO CAMP IS ON A TALUS BROOO
While in a field, we don’t see anything in the sky, and Link is in the first trailer’s outfit (which is most like what he wears in BotW), so I’m thinking there will be phases of this game and its terrain (aside from the obvious castle-lifting-up). Possibly time travel? But probably phases.
Must. Decode. Text.
Okay, yes, Funky Arm does seem to be Sheikah Slate 2.0 or whatever. The yellow makes me think stasis, but it also shows the projected travel path or something?
Flamethrower!! BUT, it’s on his left arm, which isn’t the Funky Arm (which I think he does have atm, so perhaps it’s the power source, or perhaps the flamethrower is an indicator of Other Items being available!)
Is The Water Drop Clip In Reverse Or Not? (And what is that very specifically-shaped basin for?)
YA BOI CAN SWIM THROUGH ROCK, GORO!
This architecture is very cool, but where did it come from? BotW Hyrule did not have nearly this many yellow trees.
Hey, that’s the Seres Scablands down there! (You can see the dragon blood trees, Illumeni Plateau, and Washa’s Bluff, and you can almost see where Shae Loya Shrine and the Tabantha Bridge Stable are, to the bottom right, suspiciously covered by a cloud.) Confirmation that the islands actually are above Hyrule and not just...somewhere else with a lot of clouds.
Uh hello?? This version of the castle rising looks like literal hell breaking loose??? The malice is angy.
And then it...stays there? A certain height above the ground? I doubt that. I’m getting some Bowser’s Fury vibes, where it’ll gradually keep rising until Confrontation Time or whatever. I dunno.
Castle Town doesn’t...look...very renovated yet. Maybe this does happen pretty soon after BotW.
2022 babes!!!! (Probably!! ...Maybe!)

So, now that I'm home from work (I had literally just enough time to watch the direct before I had to scram), a few more detailed thoughts on the trailer:
Link is getting his arm... eaten off by Malice? That can't possibly be comfortable. I wonder how that relates to the green energy thing — maybe it had to meld with his arm to heal or replace it?
Ganondorf rears back and... roars? Shouts?... for a split second.
Zelda falls into a ravine, and isn't seen again in the trailer.
Next we move to Link falling from a great height into a sea of clouds. He has a new outfit, which as far as I can tell he keeps for the rest of the trailer. It's also very reminiscent of his starting clothes in Skyward Sword, notably.
Lots and lots of floating islands. These show up in a lot of other shots, usually in large groups.
Some kind of animated statue — it reminds me of eyegores and beamoses — floating down onto a pedestal. It's way too elaborate to be a regular mook, so I'm thinking this fella is either a boss or a miniboss.
A bokoblin camp on a talus — fun, fun, fun. It should definitely spice up those fights — raiding bokoblin camps is usually made easy by being able to snipe at them from a distance and taluses become fish in a barrel once you get on top of them, and this should handily address both issues. This shot also takes place on ground level, seemingly somewhere in Hyrule Field — grassy, wide-open, and I can see both Death Mountain and the Dueling Peaks.
I also cannot help but notice that they've got moblin horns. That's... kind of weird. I wonder why this is, and how it's explained in-universe.
A shot of Link's arm being all glowy. Neat.
Something Stasis-like is in, but the glow seems to come directly from Link's hand — the same one the energy either infused or replaced. Interesting...
Can't get a good view of that moblin, but its horn also seems stubbier than usual.
Some kind of giant... thing? Coming from the ceiling? Thought it was a hand, but on a closer look it seems more of a plant thing of some sort.
Also, Link has some kind of fire-breathing dragon head thing he’s holding out with one hand.
A drop of water falling up. What this means I cannot begin to guess.
Link shoots up through something that looks a whole lot like but very likely isn’t Revali’s Gale and phases through a stone platform.
Then Hyrule Castle is overrun by Malice — again — and carried off into the air.
It seems the theory that whatever Ganondorf's doing will raise a lot of new floating islands to explore was right — a lot of these scenes take place up in the air, with a lot of flying islands visible. It seems that the game will probably aim to keep exploration fresh by creating a whole new chunk of Hryule to explore. If the islands lifted off of the ground, then presumably the ground-level landscape has also gone through some changes.
Zelda... that's something I'm worried about. If she just gets damselled out of the game again I will be extremely annoyed. For now, I'm hoping that she'll have her own playable sections, but we'll see...
In any case, there are definitely either new enemies, unique bosses or both coming, which I'm very happy about.

A brief(ish) simple(ish) explanation of Breath of the Wild enemy scaling
*cracks knuckles*
So, I was reading a Reddit thread on the mechanics of how enemies in Breath of the Wild get stronger over time*, and it’s... kind of a doozy. So I thought I’d stretch my old “used to write game guides as a career” muscles and try and explain how the game ramps up enemy difficulty in a way that even I could understand it. I’ll link to the thread at the end if you really wanna go into the weeds (it’s not hard to find tho), but lemme try and break it down first.
So you’ve probably noticed that as you play, some enemies will change colors. Stronger versions of Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos and Lynel will slowly but surely start showing up in areas where weaker iterations used to be (though “weak” is relative when it comes to Lynel). This is entirely dependent on how you play, and you can absolutely cheese things to your advantage.
Let’s get this out of the way: Hearts, equipment and story progression do NOT affect “common” monster scaling at all. You can have 3 Hearts or 30, it doesn’t matter. Map/tower completion, fairy fountain unlocking, all immaterial.
It’s all in what monsters you’re killing.
Basically, the game keeps a running score counter based on enemies you’ve defeated. When you reach a certain score, the game will upgrade very specific monsters tagged for upgrading across the overworld. As in, pre-set monster camps/spawns have some enemies that will upgrade next time they’re loaded into the game world, and others that will forever remain the same level. This progression is pre-set and (usually) only affects one monster type at a time. First the tagged red Bokoblins will turn blue. Next step, tagged red Moblins go blue, etc.
However. Only certain enemies are actually worth points. The vast majority of common foes are worth 0 points. ChuChus, Keese, Octoroks, Pebblits, animals, red/blue/Stal Bokoblins and Moblins, green/blue/Stal Lizalfos, normal Yiga, and Guardian Scouts I and II do not increase enemy difficulty at all. You can whale on thousands of them and nothing will change.
It’s only once you start getting into the rarer/tougher enemies that your score will go up. And naturally, the tougher the foe, the more points they’re worth. A Wizzrobe isn’t worth much. A black Bokoblin, elemental Lizalfos, normal Stone Talus or Hinox, a bit more. A red Lynel, Molduga or mobile Guardian is fairly high-scoring. A Blight is worth a LOT (well, the ones inside the Divine Beasts are, the final Castle rematches are 0 points), enough to trigger some steps all on their own. Dark Beast Ganon... loads. Loads of points.
(Okay I suppose you could consider the Blights and Ganon “story” progression, but it’s the points for their defeat that are the actual (potential) triggers, so.)
Thus, if you like to play sneaky-sneaky and are careful in picking your fights, you can slip around the nastier enemies and make your way to a great number of shrines to boost your Hearts and stamina to a hefty degree, and gather up a ton of pretty good equipment to prepare yourself for some Lynel hunting or Divine Beast liberating in peace, knowing those foes won’t be any stronger.
(As a side note, it is impossible to trigger an enemy upgrade until after you leave the Great Plateau. The only enemies on there worth points at the beginning are the Stone Talus and three Decayed Guardians, and they’re not even CLOSE to enough points to trigger the first upgrade. And since the Blood Moon will not occur until after you leave the Plateau, they won’t respawn either!)
There’s two big exceptions here: the Yiga and the Blights. The Yiga are story-dependent on their upgrades, but it should be obvious what story events trigger those. The Blights upgrade depending on how many of Blights you’ve bested: every Blight defeat ups the health & damage of the remaining ones by a bit.
There are, of course, a wad of special cases, like the Coliseum enemies. ALSO, what weapons various enemies are carrying also changes over time, but that’s a bit less important and I really don’t wanna get into it (and the original thread ain’t got that info). If you really wanna dig into it, you can find the thread with the point values and escalation steps at
reddit /r/zelda/comments/6gg5zj/explaining_enemy_scaling_in_botw/
So, hey, there ya go, folks still playing Breath of the Wild. Happy hunting.

Tips for Breath of the Wild Newbies
Or anyone who may be as obsessed with the game as me.
I’ve officially done five playthroughs of Breath of the Wild since I got the game and Switch last year. Even though I’m on my sixth now, I’m still somehow discovering things while playing it! That goes to show how expansive and utterly amazing it is. If I had to choose just one game to play for the rest of my life, it’d be Breath of the Wild without hesitation. It has officially dethroned Twilight Princess as my favorite Zelda title which I never thought would happen. Anyway, if you’re a new player like I was just last year, or a veteran looking to critique some hints and tips, I hope this post doesn’t disappoint!
1: Thoroughly explore the Great Plateau This area is the beginning of your journey, and methodically running all over it will equip you for the rest of your adventure. There are some weapons lying around other than weak Traveler’s and Boko gear, such as a Soldier’s Bow at the top of the Temple of Time (which you literally can’t miss after the first major cutscene), a Throwing Spear in the Bokoblin camp behind the Temple, and a Soldier’s Broadsword under the waterfall of the snowy area. Raiding all the Bokoblin camps will reward you with a few ambers and opals you can sell for rupees early on. Keep the Iron Sledgehammer you get in the Owa Daim shrine and use it to defeat the Stone Talus near Hopper Pond instead of expending precious, expensive Bomb Arrows. Make it a habit to use Magnesis near any body of water, especially bogs. Comb the Forest of Spirits for all its insect and food resources. Lastly, there are eighteen Korok seeds to be found around the Plateau which gives you a good start to upgrading your inventory.
2: Gather Korok seeds early and efficiently Most new players probably want to know how they can carry more gear since it breaks. Hestu provides the solution to that issue and you can’t miss him if you follow the main questline. There are 900 Korok seeds in the whole game but you only need 441 to max out your gear slots. My favorite areas for getting a lot of seeds early on are the Dueling Peaks and Hateno regions (combined to form Necluda), the Lake region, and north-northwestern Faron. You can easily glide to many seed locations from the Lake tower and the top of Dueling Peaks. Zelda Dungeon is the best resource for finding seeds.
3: Embrace the durability system Something I hear from many players is their hatred for weapons breaking, but that system is in place for a reason! There’s tons of gear scattered all over Hyrule and breaking it gives you the opportunity to try out everything. I’m sure you will come to favor certain items as you progress. I hate finding a chest with a good weapon or shield in it that I can’t carry because my inventory is full, so I have to throw something on the ground ‘cause I’m too impatient to come back and get the better thing later. I’d rather break weapons by fighting enemies and gathering resources instead of letting them poof. You will also get the most mileage out of your gear by using it appropriately. Instead of running into monster camps and breaking all your swords and spears on tough enemies, take some of them out with bow headshots. Instead of trying to melee certain enemies, use shield parries to deflect their projectiles and kill them. And don’t use your claymores to smash ore. One last aspect of the durability system is to learn where certain weapons spawn, providing you with an endless supply. For instance, there will always be Iron Sledgehammers leaning against Link’s house in Hateno and a Silver Longsword behind the Ne’ez Yohma shrine in Zora’s Domain.
4: Save Guardian gear for Guardians Guardian gear is most effective against the various types of Guardians loitering around Hyrule. After passing some Minor or Moderate Tests of Strength, hang onto those weapons for Guardian Scouts you’ll encounter in certain shrines, Decayed Guardians posted around certain areas, and Guardian Stalkers which yield the highest amount of ancient materials. You can use Guardian gear against regular monsters, but it’s not as efficient. Shock Arrows are also effective against Guardians if you need something in a pinch.
5: Ignore Yiga Footsoldiers If you see random people on the side of the main roads in Hyrule either whimpering or standing around like creeps, they turn out to be Yiga assassins 99% of the time. I personally find them annoying so I just ignore them. They won’t pursue you unlike the archers and blademasters that poof in to disrupt your questing later on.
6: Use Dragonbone Moblin Clubs to defeat Taluses Dragonbone Moblin Clubs are highly effective and extremely common two-handed weapons that work well for dispatching Taluses in the early stages of the game. The easiest way to get these clubs is to run around at night and wait for Stalmoblins to pop out of the ground; they are commonly found in the Gerudo mountains. It should be noted that these clubs aren’t as effective against Igneo Taluses due to catching on fire. But Frost and Stone Taluses of the plain, rare, and luminous ore varieties will fall quickly beneath the might of the Dragonbone Moblin Club, especially if you hold a charge attack after climbing onto them. It should also be noted that Boulder Breaker is actually the best weapon in the game for farming ore from Taluses, so you can just use that after you get it. I still hang onto Spiked and Dragonbone Moblin Clubs for smashing regular ore if my sledgehammers break.
7: Do not fear Hinoxes, Moldugas, and Lynels These are the three most intimidating monsters in the game, but engaging them is entirely optional. You can hear Hinoxes snoring from a mile away so they’re easy to stroll past or ignore altogether. After a certain heart count they’ll almost always have boosted weapons around their necks, usually Royal gear, and there are three methods for gathering them. You can sneak onto their hand and wait for them to drop you onto their belly, then nab the weapons and carefully jump off. You can engage them, shoot them in the eye once, and grab the weapons while they’re sitting on the ground before running away. Or you can just kill them which is easy if you have Urbosa’s Fury and hold a charge attack with any two-handed weapon. This method will even kill red and blue Hinoxes in one go with a strong Royal Claymore! Moldugas only spawn in specific areas of the Gerudo Desert and you can see their sand ripples from far away, so you can give them a wide berth if you want. But they’re worth engaging for the good weapons in their treasure chests. Again, the best method for defeating them is to use a strong two-handed weapon (Royal Claymores are my personal favorite for their abundance and high durability), hold a charge attack, and make sure Urbosa’s Fury is active. Lynels are obnoxious to fight due to how much they dick around. The key to defeating them is to master perfect dodging because their attack patterns are extremely predictable. Use a combination of high durability and high damage one-handed weapons, such as Royal Broadswords and Lizal Tri-Boomerangs, paired with strong shields. Always try to swoop in on Lynels with the Paraglider from a high point because if they spot you from afar they’ll shoot you with elemental arrows. Speaking of which, Lynels are immune to elemental arrows and weapons so don’t waste them. Just go toe to hoof and have good reaction time.
8: Learn the best locations for farming resources After five playthroughs I’m still working on this one, but here are some tips I can share. Razorshrooms and Zapshrooms are commonly found all over Akkala. Rhino beetles are best gathered in Faron. Equip the Sheikah set, start in Lurelin Village, and run along the beach checking palm trees along the way. Hearty Lizards are also commonly found in Faron. For gathering Rushrooms with minimal climbing, stay in Necluda. Naydra Snowfield yields more Chillshrooms than you’ll know what to do with. To get Gourmet Meat either to sell to Trott or make expensive kebabs, hunt Tabantha Moose and Great Horned Rhinoceros in Hebra; wolves and coyotes tend to yield Prime Meat. Avoid bears because they’re jerks. If you’re in need of the three varieties of Safflina, you can’t do better than farming the Ruins and Great Fairy Fountain of Gerudo. Lastly, if you want a lot of ore for upgrading clothes or selling to get rich, turn on your Sheikah Sensor in Eldin. Of course I wouldn’t leave out the dragons. Farming parts from them can be frustrating because of the elements that hurt you, but you need horn shards for upgrading the Champion’s Tunic. It is easiest to fly at them head-on and use either a Golden or Phrenic Bow, or the Ancient Bow since it shoots straight, then stay in the updraft so you can see where the part lands. In my experience, the best spot for Farosh is on Floria Bridge in Faron. Hylia Bridge and the Gerudo Summit are good second and third areas. The best spot for Dinraal is Tabantha Great Bridge; the second best is near the Eldin Great Skeleton. Climb one of the rock spikes along the edge of the map or up the mountain to catch an updraft and shoot him. My favorite spot to farm Naydra is in Lanayru Promenade. Climb up either of the dilapidated sides and wait for her to come down. You might also catch her while gliding southeast from Vah Ruta.
9: Explore one region at a time I started doing this during my most recent playthrough. Previously I would go around activating each tower as soon as possible to fill in the map, but exploring each area as I reveal it has led to some fun discoveries, like a big stash of gear just north of the Gerudo tower, and certain side quests I’d never done before such as A Parent’s Love. Methodical searching is also the best way to find Korok seeds if you don’t want to use a guide. There are so many secrets in Hyrule that you’ll definitely miss stuff when you have the whole map laid out before you, so consider exploring one region at a time!
10: Try the Expansion Pass content Master Mode is probably the best offering from both DLCs. It does ramp up the difficulty to a certain degree and is worth a full playthrough even though the base game stays the same. There are no red enemies, you start facing off against the blue versions of each monster type. In addition to black and silver, you will fight golden enemies which are quite tough. Monsters also regenerate health which can be frustrating. However, there are way more and better weapons to be found! Floating alongside most bridges and waterfalls will be Bokoblins and Lizalfos guarding treasure chests. Master Mode also gives you much more rare ore. The Champion’s Ballad is enjoyable and has three main parts. First, you run around with the One Hit Obliterator and if the name of that weapon doesn’t sell you, then don’t buy the content. Second, the shrines you must beat to complete each champion song are difficult, good for anyone who complained about a lack of a challenge. Third, the final dungeon is like a fifth Divine Beast and the boss fight is kind of easy compared to everything you had to do to get to that point. But the Master Cycle is worth it. Think “steampunk unicorn dirt bike” and if you have no desire to drive Link around Hyrule on such a vehicle, then you are playing the wrong video game. I can’t talk about the Master Trials since I have yet to complete it, but I loved going on a treasure hunt for all of the EX armors, the Royal Guard uniform being the best. They can’t be upgraded, though, which is a bit disappointing.
Was this post helpful to you? Am I completely wrong about something? Do you have anything to add? Feel free to reblog with your own hints and tips! And let’s all hope that Breath of the Wild 2 measures up to the awesomeness of the first game!

Really great analysis of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I love his thoughts on exploration and environmental storytelling.
Reduced focus on narrative due to simplistic story
Maximize freedom - early Ganon kills needs to be possible
Not capitalizing enough on the backstory other than the main quest
At first the Forgotten temple seems like just the kind we’re looking for, but once you come over the shrine the place feels tainted a little. Instead there could have been some kind of mural on the back wall which visually explained another version of the backstory.
Zelda could have chimed in more often every time we found a relic of Hyrule’s history. Voice acting without interrupting the gameplay.
The map itself was just a generic terrain overview
Place names appeared only after they’ve been visited
Prevents lazy players and developers from relying on it too much
Destructive trend: entering an area causes its place name to appear in bottom left corner.
If the temple of time didn’t say “Temple of Time” down here, how would you know it was the temple of time? First it was the piano theme. Link could only discover this was the temple of time by opening the Sheika slate map. There’s nothing visual cues, items in it or anything around that even suggests it was somehow related to time. In other words, it’s actually not a temple of time. It’s just a generic cathedral with a name attached.
Ocarina of time had the same issue
Tons of details scattered around the world, big and small
You can tell these Bokoblins have been practicing their archery
Arrows in the entrance gate of Kakariko village hint at either a bored villager or something even more sinister
These guys are delighted to have found some durians
Riju’s seal plushies wordlessly hint at her immaturity
Robbie’s lab used to be a lighthouse
The three hinox holding the keys to this shrine couldn’t have possibly been alive when the Sheikah erected the hint tablet, but they also happen to live inside massive rib cages which were the actual giants referred to in the text.
Many NPCs have quirks and moments to be discovered
Koko struggling to stay awake so she can protect her sister
But Hyrule suffers from the sense that there’s not much definitive history to be found
Next to Hateno village, there’s a dilapitated horseback archery course. A nearby house holds some arrows, which presumably would have been sold to customers. Even it’s location on the main road makes sense for a business. All these things paint a picture of better time when the owner would solicit passing travelers. Riding a horse through it while picking off a few neglected targets sells the post-apocalyptic setting because it tells a story and even allows the player to become a part of it in their own way.
Not many ruins like this to come across though
Most relics of the past just seemed like generic stone structures or burnt out houses. Makes sense that not EVERY place should be meaningful. But some places that should be aren’t.
Lake Hylia’s bridge is bookended by two towers complete with arrow slits and battlements, but there’s no way for guards to enter them. There’s no doors, no interior, and thus no sense that this was ever actually in use.
Lanayru Promenade, the Coliseum, and Akala Citadel give off the same hollow impression
Guardian husks are well utilized in a couple of places, most notably Fort Hateno. But they crop up a bit too often for their own good, robbing them of some of their importance.
This might be an underlying problem in how all of these ruins ultimately stem from a single event, leaving you with little to learn from their downfall.
Considering the focus on exploration, archaeology seems like a fitting inclusion.
So some decorative artifacts could have still been lying around in a few places waiting to be sold off or be displayed in Link’s home.
Nintendo is family friendly, so there’s a lack of human corpses in the overworld, although they could be used to great effect in storytelling.
Flashbacks, voiceovers, murals, architecture, corpses, spirits, artifacts ... All these avenues for fleshing out the world remain largely underutilized. Probably because of the extra resouces it would take, but maybe also because the area text engendered some complacency about how severe this problem was.
If discovery is a reward for exploration, then another detrimental trend is the reuse of Hyrule.
You don’t need to be a Zelda expert to identify Death Mountain and figure out that’s probably where the Gorons are. Try to remember back to that first Ocarina of Time playthrough. Gorons were a new addition in that edition and entering Goron’s domain resulted in a bunch of discoveries about them: they can roll around, they eat rocks, they have a chieftain, they’re having troubles, and they have a unique culture to be experienced.
These renditions of familiar faces are superb in their execution though.
Zora’s domain looks beautiful
Korok forest looks more lush than ever
The Rito bird nest is an inspired design
Fantasy races are often homogenized, but here each race has tons of variations within themselves.
Completionism and sense of permanence
If not for the blood moon, clearing out enemy camps might have been: the satisfaction of taking back Hyrule. Presumably this isn’t possible for technical constrains and ensuring the world remains filled with combat encounters and resources no matter how long the players take to explore. If they felt that their actions had an impact on Hyrule, it might be enough to motivate them instead of more combat engagement, not less.
Tarry town quest is weak. Essentially it involves talking to NPCs until you find the right one, gather rewards, then repeat times five. At least nice to have gathering wood to be the focus for once -- more purpose to the mechanic. Relaxing to be working towards building a town and the mundane way than usual for a Zelda title. But repeat too many times, it can feel like a slug.
900 koroks to find -- to make sure an average players will stumble across a reasonable amount
Standout areas to appreciate even if they lack permanence or distinct rewards.
Thai flow forests reduced visibility
Lost woods: entry puzzle, three well-rounded distinct side quests, a cave of ordeals, most lively rendition of a forest town yet
Yiga clan hideout has enforced stealth plus unique boss
Eventide island
All these places have something in common: they’re restrictive
Just look at the path to Zora’s domain:
more restrictive gameplay can lead to more memorable outcomes
It rains here and its a mountainous region. So the most reasonable option for progresss is to follow the path, which makes the player run into several enemy encounters. Given the choice you might be the player who fights them just because, but if you’re the type to go around, placing them right here in your path makes them more of a threat, which encourages you to take them out.
Nerf the paraglider a bit
Won’t work if Link can continue to effortlessly glide over so much terrain
Should function more like Skyward Sword where it was simply used to break falls. Would make a fast way to descend without being so easily abusable.
Shield surfing would then be a more feasible way to cover distance by speeding down sllopes.
Actually more satisfying to cut down trees to cross ravines
Their camouflage is too easy to notice.
So such ambush tactics is just what this kind of open world needs.
Others have similar tricks: Octorocks, Koblins, minor talus, Yiga clan members.
At worst they feel like random encounters
Problem: easy to run away after they reveal themselves
Lionels and mounted bokoblins are the only real cases where fleeing might result in death
Deku scrubs, Bodongos, and the likes are missing - but also present due to octorok vairants accomplishing much the same thing
(... TBC 32:33)
Something addictive about trying to grab that perfect shot of wildlife (photographer)
BOTW doesn’t have enough variation given its size
Eventide island: people value every equipment and food they can obtain
Players can make it harder for themselves by sticking to self-proposed rules
making an experience feel real (reality) vs making it simply look real (realism)
Pro mode simply hides the menu items ➡ more immerssive

update: dad somehow managed to find a stone talus on the great plateau, something i did not realize existed up there??? i persuaded him to flee from that though, instead of fighting it like he thought he should, and he ran straight into a camp of five bokoblins, so, uh...

today’s zeldablogging, big big huge very much spoilers everywhere:
WHERE DO I EVEN GO FIRST there is. so Much
out towards the ocean, i suppose...i see a shrine, and something else glowing that could be a settlement or lava or even a great fairy, and there are those islands to think about
GOD IT'S A COMBAT SHRINE a minor test of strenth okay okay i can do this
oh pffft that was easy
and i got...a giant ancient core, which sounds nice but probably won't let me upgrade my rune
how come the bokoblins can use bomb arrows in the rain and i can't?!
OH MY GOD....
first skeleton bokoblins, then skeleton lizalfos, and now skeleton moblins?!?!
wish i had marked that other glowing thing with a pin...i can't find it now lol
and i am at the islands!! man these bridges sure are tiny and high up
all this climbing i want to do and its about to rain :/
oh good. more flying guardians :|im trapped on top of this island in the middle of a lightning storm in the night besieged by moblin skeletons and keese swarms and my only non-metallic weapon is a korok leaf smh
mkay i am All Done with the islands im gonna warp back to the tower and mark the glowy thing this time
oh they just look like mushrooms?? well i'll go pick them i guess
OH OMG IT'S A FAIRY FOUNTAIN SKDFGH YES!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!
only 500...but i know it gets worse :| im saving up
oh this one is blue!! how pretty
haha i still think they look more like mermaids...can't see their legs and they pop up outta water :3
OMG I SEE THE FIRE DRAGON
THE DIN ONE
IN THE DISTANCE AAAAH!!!!
so far away ;u;
i can't even take a good picture!!!!
oh no
oh NO
skeleton moblins...and now a skeleton hinox ;___;
...skeletons only take two hits. im gonna go fight it
omg the hinox fight music plays nooooo rip m having eventide flashbacks
oh my god! wow! okay! this one takes more than two hits!!
it's lightning too i can't even use my bomb arrows what did i get myself into........
OMFG HE IS TEARING OFF HIS OWN RIBS TO THROW AT ME LSKDJFHG
oh the lightning is a hinox thing. Great i only have metal weapons rn
aaaand he ran away with the dawn. ok
oh dude this shrine is cool you have to like play putt putt golf hahaha
OMG IM GOING TO CRY
i found another memory and it's of zelda saying she's prayed all her life like her father wanted and she still can't make the gods hear her......im so sad for her
there's nothing wrong with you my sweet daughter!!!!
this is cool tho the talk of her father and mother and grandmother and link's father
they have families and lives, it's so neat, i wish i knew more about them
tho ofc almost everyone who knew and loved link is long dead now......
ah. i paraglided her, but
to get out i have to bypass all these flying guardians. Great
NO SKDFGJH ONE SAW ME
so its laser grazed me and only took one heart and i was like thats it?! i'll fight you!!
then i got hit directly and it nearly killed me so now im running
NOOOO THERE'S A LYNEL HERE JESUS GOD
I JUST WANTED TO GET TO THE SHRINE AND I RAN RIGHT INTO HIM SDLFGJH
god and a blue hinox in the way too Why
omg i unlocked a monster shop lskjghf now i will see him in villages at night!!!
ah the shrine is on top of this huge rock pillar, how do i...?
maybe i can glide from a nearby cliff!!
okay...okay...it's not sheer rock, there must be resting places, if i glide form here maybe i can do it
i can't glide from where i'd like bc of the hinox (:
I MADE IT
they better not make me solve a fucking puzzle too
ah good they didn;t
FLAMEBLADE thats so badass
oh god another blue lynel
maybe it's even the same one
my dude i just wanna travel....i promise, i promise
FINALLY the akkala research lab!!!
dude better have some sick duds or something for me i swear to god
the music in here is lit i love it
uh
there's a...blue glowing statue
looks like something out of the tower of the gods awww
haha it's damaged! poor thing
this old man like "show me the wounds on your body you suffered" bro are you asking me to strip
oh my gOD his electric guitar pose thing
jesus chrkjrgh
EVERYONE IN THIS GAME IS A GIANT HAM
im doing a quest where you have to carry fire
AND IT STARTS RAINING
this game has made me LOATHE rain! i thought that was impossible and yet!!!!!
im running out of map stamps :/ why would you give me a world this big and limit me to only 100...?
aaaand it's raining
and my ONLY TORCH BROKE god i keep accidentally using it to hit things!!!
FINALLY i did it!!!!! god that was so tedious
oh my god this guy could make me such amazing gear, but i don't have the materials </3
now to check out this maze building it looks super weird and i can see a shrine in it......
how the fuck are you even supposed to get there i hope my glider can take me
lovely. the wind's blowing against me and i see flying guardians from here
noooo they're EVERYWHERE and i have to do a MAZE oh my god
i can solve it on my map and mark the dead end routes, fortunately
i still kind of want to explore those routes lol
oh they're so bare......maybe not
if i miss something like a korok seed or whatever a guide will direct me back here later
or...maybe not
i mean im next to the shrine but it's surrouned on all sides by wall?
bet it's too tall to climb even with potions and my gear
ooh or if it isn't those lfying guardians will fuck me up in a snap
YES i got lucky and found my way in from the top
or no i found...a sword, great, how do i get into the SHRINE
YES here it is
dude i got an ATK+ helmet!! i got GEAR!!!! YES
AAAAH I GOT ATTACKED AS SOON AS I GOT OUT
nope fuck this im fast traveling. goodbye forever, maze island
geez i guess that must be nearly it for this province then i got one shrine left i think and then i could........go to death mountain?
tbh kinda tempted to go back down to lake hylia but i'll pass for now, i want more Plot
i suppose i didn't do akkala beach but it's small and remote so i'm ok with that for now - i can clean up the endgame stuff later when better guides are out
there's a stable next to this shrine!! yay!!!!!!
omg there's a goron here!!!!! hi!!!!!!!!!!!!
finally hit 10k rupees
ooh this guy is talking about a legendary sword...GIMME MY MASTER SWORD
tbh i'll be disappointed if there's no special quest to get it tho like you just...find it? kinda weak
AAAH I CAN CHANGE MANES HERE........jemma has a floral mane now ;w;
too bad i didn't find this before, i can't ride her up death mountain, unfortunately - it's so much faster to fast travel, and she might get hurt, and i'll have to get on and off of her so much... ):
oh wait, i haven't explored the lake yet! i forgot! i can take her there <3
all the guardians here scared the shit out of me but they arent functional, thank god
NO FUCK THERE ABSOLUTELY IS A LIVE GUARDIAN HERE.....fuck fuck i can't KILL them
omg no i see TWO of them
if it was just one i might try my luck, but...no way
i'm sure in the future i'll be able to get more guardian arrows but right now i have, like, 4? so i can't waste them
and when i have the guardian armor that'll help too but. not Now
aaah i found somsone whose ancestors died at that tower...apparently the last stand was made there at what used to be the fortress after the castle fell ;_; and he wanted to pray there but it's too dangerous and i am AD oh my god
i can see the death mountain tower and a shrine from the akkala tower, but i can only reach the shrine by gliding. the tower is surrounded by (UGH) snow
lol the shrine is by a stable too
AAAH kass is here!!!!!!
AWWW he said the song he's playing was used by the ancient hero to call his horse!! gonna cry omg
bro lmao there's an ostrich running around here what kinda shenanigans
oh my god this dried lava under the tower is SO COOL it's so BIG and i feel so SMALL
ah, eldin tower - so this is the eldin province
wow the first stops are quite a ways up on this one! lucky i have so much stamina
ooooh my gosh the eldin map is HUGE and FULL OF LAVA im not sure im Prepared for this!!!
lol in a fun twist the temperature gets HOTTER as i gain altitude. ohhh man
i guess...i wanna do plot. i'll try to make it to goron city, and come back and explore later
when i have more fireproof elixirs lol rn my inventory is packed so i could only buy 3
oh my god i can't use wooden weapons, my arrows turn into fire arrows as soon as i get them out, even the loot will catch fire if you leave it too long, this is Intense
OH MY GOD A STONE TALUS BUT IT'S LIKE, MAGMA-Y
okay this is cool i wish i hadn't waited so long
lmao i accidentally drank a defense elixir and erased my fireproofness early OOPS
omg you can't use bomb arrows either dkgjhdfg the heat makes them explode instantly
unfortunately the only thing that makes a dent is ice arrows and i just don't have enough rn....BUT I WILL RETURN god that is so cool okay anyway
all right......i really like this region. normally i'm a water person, ESPECIALLY in zelda games, but rain and lightning have been nothing but a pain in my ass since i started playing. maybe i was ready for some #Heat
HA there's the fucking blood moon good thing i DIDN'T kill him it would have been erased right after
the blood moon looks kinda cool when the air is already like this tbh but i still hate it
like on a gameplay/story integration level it's a cool way to explain monsters coming back
but also im angry on behalf of hylians and everyone else like
no matter how hard they fight every month it comes back, it's all in vain
the music here is super cool, also
omg i found a little camp of gorons!!
ooh, a hylian...and he'll give me fireproof armor for lizards OOOO:
hahahaha...they can't dig up ore because of a lizard monster
my heart twisted, fondly
geez i wish i had time to catch some lizards...........
i caught a few but not 10, and i only have one elixir left, since i used one early. i guess if it comes to it i could try to make another but
YES okay i did it!! good
and armor i now have!!
altho i hope i don't run out of armor inventory space that would SUCK what with all the work that goes into collecting and upgrading it tbh
LOL i hit an emu or ostrich or whatever it is and the meat it dropped immediately became roasted oh my god
HOLY FUCK THE MOUNTAIN IS ERUPTING
NOW THIS SHIT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OH MY GOD
running for cover!!!! almost dying!!!!!!!!! good times im so happy
it's like getting to do it the very first time all over again
oh my god i just got a divine beast cutscene as i got to goron city i am quaking in my boots it is SO BIG
and now i'm out almost 3k rupees but i have full fireproof armor!
oh my god you can get a goron massage at the inn
"it doesn't hurt a bit" yeah i bet
[cue lots of screaming]
omg theres a gerudo lady sleeping here!! are you not on fire?!?!
SO IS PAINTER DUDE...?
omg they must have elixirs ldfjkgh
"abandoned mine - do not stray from path! both literally and figuratively" slkdfjgh what does that MEAN...
aw, they sleep on beds of hoat coals
man this shrine im doing is so complex!! like many multiple rooms, it's neat
i got like 9 orbs now i need to find somehwere to trade them in
omg so im lookin for the goron who went to get the stuff out of the vault and HE'S TALKING IT'S SO WEIRD it still always shocks me
how do i..? my bombs don;t work, so
OH OMG I CAN USE THE CANONS i thought maybe you had to wait for permission lol
poor goron he's scared and trembling...haha just like the ones in the fire temple. bye
HE TALKED IN HIS OPENING CUTSCENE...IM SO GLAD
yunobo! aww he's precious i love him
i suspect this is the area where i'll have to get inside the divine beast tbh bc of all the cannons
lol almost yped it with one n. shh
the embers here are so pretty...next time i paint hotland i'll remember them
i wanna paint THIS, tbh
like, anything. from this game. god Damn
ooooh a daruk statue
omg IM GETTING A MEMORY YES!!!!!!
I LOVE HIM
I LOVE DARUK
WHO PATS BACKS TOO HARD AND PUNCHES OUT ROCKS
oh my god he had the same kind of barrier that yunobo put up around himself are they related!!!! im gonna cry i love them so much
yep hahahaha the next words out of boss's mouth!
oooh he has the blessing, that's what the barrier is
yunobo's at eldin bridge...? that's MILES away
OH!!! omg my brother reminded me there are two in tp hahahaha so i guess i got them mixed up
so where is eldin's bridge actually......
too bad i cant swim up lavafalls lol
i found a minecart and put it on the track but bombs dont make it go and i can't magnesis it when its under my feet??
AHA, STASIS
okay that was super fun but i hate beating up my weapons like that
there's a shrine here but the glowing orange blends right in with this lava, i nearly missed it
AWWW yunobo's gonna be the canonball! bless him
omg is he gonna follow me!!!! I HAVE A FRIEND
IM GONNA CRY FINALLY IM NOT ALONE <3333
oh god okay here we go i guess??? im so scared
like. its so big.i cant impress upon anyone who hasnt played it. how big it is. and the mountain is so much bigger and i am so small. i keep saying that but i'm like. DWARFED by this thing, it's truly incredible
ohhhhh an escort mission.......and stealth, which im Bad at. man, the elephant was a lot cooler so far
AWW omg we snuck past the first one and he went "hee hee!" and it was so cute i love him so much
he stands at attention so quick when i do the stop whistle please please i love him
also i feel like i recognize SO many voices in this...i gotta imdb it later
the voice acting isn't even anything extraordinary, it's like, not awful but nothing jaw dropping
but the fact that they speak blows my mind every time
i used to fantasize about that in a "fff yeah right the day after never" kinda way and here we are.....
omg i got stuck and talked to him and it's like. what he said was completely useless but it's like having a companion!!! oh god i've been so lonely
oh god i looked up too far and saw the beast and it is. so big. i know i keep saying this but it is gargantuan. it's HUGE. i can't believe how big it is
lol i couldnt figure out why the trail ended and spent half an hour wondering what i was supposed to do
turns out i should have been firing at the divine beast this entire time so i gotta go back and start over and walk up the trail again LMAO
at least you only have to clear the sentries once
ah FINALLY im inside!
DARUK IS TALKING TO ME ;_;
HE ALWAYS KNEW LINK WOULD BE BACK im so sad. i feel human emotion
oooh it's all dark in here
and blue flame!!
ohhhhh man i love these 3D maps
OH MY GOD YOU CAN TURN IT
it's so big. oh my god
wait it isn't hot in here! i can use any item i want!
god i forgot how the music becomes creepier the closer you get
i can't believe this...turning the whole dungeon...some stone tower temple shit
ooh okay still hot OUTSIDE of the divine beast...too bad
noooo i found the cockpit pod thingy...like are their skeletons just decaying in there or
ooh boy oooookay last one here we GOOOO...
"PAIN IN THE CRAG" LOL NINTENDO PLS
omg daruk cheering me on as i fight ;______;
awww that wasnt too bad ive fought WAY worse enemies just roaming around on the map
oh ew GROSS
DARUK ;_;
me after daruk sent link away: aaaww i love him but that wasn't as gut-wrenching as mipha's
me after daruk saw yunobo from a distance and they waved at each other: literally actually crying, there are tears really on my face
WHY COULDN'T MIPHA SEE HER FAMILY FROM A DISTANCE, HUH
if it doesn't happen i swear to god i will draw it if i have to
oooh boss is talkin about the master sword
it's in a forest - that's gotta be the lost woods or i'll eat my pointy green hat
but i mean. if you just find it. there's gotta be some kinda quest or build up
wow, i'm finally at the tippy-top opf death mountain...i feel like i could go anywhere from here
omg i flew to a shrine and i have to complete a training thing to get in??? oh my god
oh no. i have to climb the thing. #why
aww that wasn't too bad. did it on the first try
i found the end of the map on "land" ... it's a deep gorge and you die if you go too far down, probably even if you're on foot
but there's land beyond that, even on the map, so it doesn't feel as freaky as just MEGA WIND on the ocean
why is there a hinox EVERYWHERE i try to go. why.
dude theres a giant skeleton of some sort on my map...omg
probs a hinox there too tbh
...wait a second.
i'm at a HOT SPRING
i recover hearts by swimming, so maybe i could fight this hinox...
AND i have daruk's protection, three whole charges, two fairies, my hearty radish food, and mipha's grace.........i can do it!!
wow okay and i just used up the grace and one fairy on this bokoblin camp so nevermind
tbh i don't even like fighting them...i suck at combat and the rewards are almost never worth the fight
okay but i literally could get anywhere from death mountain i think and i do mean LITERALLY that isn't hyperbole, assuming i had infinite stamina. damn. thats a Big Mountain
gonna go investigate the skeleton
there's monsters under it! i am standing above them on the ribcage and cheesing it with bombs
also it says eldin great skeleton was this a dragon.........
was this in the trailers or was it somewhere else?
standing inside the skull of this thing
i realize just how BIG the dragons are
like. damn
everything in this game makes me feel like an ant
lol this is the First Ever shrine i'll have to come back to not bc i can't figure it out but bc i ran out of fucking arrows. incredible
the problem is i can't really explore here bc my fire armor hasnt been improved at all, my defense SUCKS
i just died bc i found a talus lol and it two-shotted me and like. i have a pretty good amt of hearts, here
also next time im exploring first i feel like i'll never know if ive seen everything or not bc i'm all lost and don't know what i looked at and what i didn't :/
i hate to like, leave it and say i'll come back to it bc i know i probably won't, but games are supposed to be fun! and attempting to explore this area with all my armor at 3 defense is like. not fun. dying over and over: Not Fun
i feel like seeing or doing something new!!
what i need is my own copy of the map on the computer so i can just mark off the areas i wanna explore later
oooh i found an interactive map!! which i can't. screencap and annotate for myself, but
oh well, it's too much trouble to find one, and ps would be really slow rn anyway since i havent used it in awhile
however this map DOES have memory locations, so i'm gonna grab a few of those
okay NOW i found a shrine idk how to do. tbh i can't be fucked rn, i wanna go get memories
holy fuck the first memory i unlocked had like a PILE of dead monsters link just fucked up, including a silver maned lynel, which my ass has NOT killed yet, holy shit
ONWARD
HOLY SHIT the one i just got was in the trailers!! zelda crying on link ;_;
i'm glad tbh bc i was lowkey like...well i know you get her out of the castle bc she cries on you later
but no!!!!
also he strains of zelda's lullaby, them being covered in mud, and link's master sword! MAN
i can't get to anymore atm so i guess i decide where i go next...
tbh i wanna do gerudo next like my brother which means going thru lake hylia!! so it will be a long time before more plot, i guess
ah! the blood moon! gonna warp to the stable and watch it with that guy
lol he's all beautiful moon tonight, eh, finally the blood moon
UM HE'S FREAKING ME OUT HE JUST STARTED RUNNING AROUND AND SAID HIS BLOOD WAS BOILING???
"IT'S SO GLORIOUSLY RED, ARISE MONSTERS" WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
and he acted totally normal after!
"oh you were researching the blood moon too?" WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU FREAK
yep goodbye im leaving
upgraded my armor as much as i could with the fairy, STILL can't afford anti-guardian tech, am actively dying without it, will attempt gerudo and/or lake hylia tomorrow
