Kerry's situation is a very painful reminder of how fucked up the game's canon society is, even to the rich people. Which is maybe my biggest gripe with the game. A game where I'm not given even the slightlest chance to change shit around me, a game that's just so pessimistic and cruel in how it treats its characters, so hopeless, is not punk. but that's smth else entirely to talk about.

Back to Kerry. He's less suicidal at the end of the game when V reached out and helped some to sooth his trauma about Johnny, even if one could argue it's maybe just, well, putting him back where he started or indulging a toxic fixation. Depends on your interpretation. But his situation hasn't actually changed, he's still held by his label in a death grip, even if at least his current manager's supposedly out of the picture. But even that i don't believe. All we know for sure is that we burned his yatch. Like. Kerry tells us that his MSM Record manager (can't remember his name and be bothered to check) makes him drink on purpose to get him to sign shit, which is blatant abuse and all we get to do is fucking burn a boat? Let me make the dude a corpse, even if you make me have to work for it jfc.

I really love when fanfic writers actually address that issue btw, because it really hurts me to think about him being left in this bullshit. And in so many endings we know his situation is less than ideal even with V.

Kerry's profound unhappiness is visible in many ways: the state of his house, his insinuated addictions, his impulsive, self-destructive behaviors, his tendency to lash out and paranoia to assume people are against him, and overall defensiveness, his fear of the unknown, his clinging to fame, his refusal to see his kids, his mentioned and hinted suicide attempts. He's a guy who, at 89, doesn't seem to me like he knows what he wants, what he needs.

Personally, it both hurts me and makes me really like him, because I find him relatable in how he reacts to despair. In that aspect, I find him very well-written, even if a lot of shitty tropes and pop star stereotypes are used. Yes, pop stars one.

(One other thing that's devastating about Kerry is that he's a rocker, but he doesn't act like one, according to his own definition (which seems to really just be Johnny's shitty macho definition altho it's a whole label that precedes both of them in the TTRPG lore). Which wouldn't be a problem to me if he also didn't find the genre inferior to rock.)

But what fucks me up the most is that he's dealing with despair at all, when out of the four LIs, he's the one that has the safest, most stable life. Hell, he could even easily leave Night City and never look back, and still create, he's got the money for it, it might sound terribly materialistic of me but the man has enough money to just no longer be dealing with all this shit. But he's stuck there because even at nearly fucking nine decades of life, he's not yet felt seen, heard, or acknowledged. He's still scrambling for his roots and something to look forward at once.

Kerry is 89 and has the self-esteem of a 23 years old still.

If I just listen to my basest instincts, I blame Johnny for a lot of that, but that's the easy way, actually. If I actually think about it, Kerry's responsible of his own life too, and Johnny got nothing to do with how he feels out of touch with his Filipino roots, or him being a burnt out rockstar, Johnny is not that powerful at all, and mostly I blame Arasaka and the corps, and i blame the music industry in the game especially actually, i blame the media and the fans for how Kerry bit by bit stops feeling human in the spotlight, but the thing is, it's harder to be angry at those, even in game. Because we're not actually given meaningful ways to do something about inequality in game, and when you're unable to fight something, your brain becomes apathetic to it. It's just a survival thing. my brain does that a lot. i prize my anger a lot because of that (probably why i am so attached to Johnny tbh).

I think Kerry craves to be seen as the man he is, but his ways to try and fix that is to feed the demigod image his career upholds. I'm mad we can't do something about it, nor see the change he deserves happen. I'm mad a game with "punk" in its name is so hopeless and cynical.

The Dabi Benchmark of Insanity: A Helpful Guide

What is it? Why won't I shut up about it whenever I talk about villains?

Yeah; this is largely a reference post, for the people who haven't seen this term before... which makes sense, since I made it the fuck up awhile ago and then never really clarified it again, even though I kept using it. I do that a lot whenever I feel the need, but I think this is the only term I've kept using consistently, and I usually explain what I mean in those posts when I make something up, so the DBI is a bit of an anomaly in that sense. I like to think it's self explanatory, really, so it probably doesn't need explanation, but... eh. I talk a lot. One more post won't hurt.

Fundamentally, the DBI is the idea that there's a... limit to how crazy a character can be and still be sympathetic; after a certain point, it doesn't matter how bad their backstory was, no one is going to like the guy eating babies. Authors can (and often do) try to make a truly fucked up character sympathetic anyways, but once they pass that point the response generally isn't sympathy but, 'JFC, can this guy shut up about how we should all like The Masked Baby-Eater already? That guy's an asshole'.

I say 'crazy' for a reason, BTW. The sheer factual amount of evil deeds a character does only has a limited effect on how readers will consider them; how the character is presented, and how they act as they do these deeds effect that reception as well. An easy example is how in something like Gundam, a character who does something objectively horrible (kill someone, start a war, etc etc), but because of how they're developed, and way they act as they do it, we will still sympathize with them. Meanwhile, if there's a school story, a character who is just rude and cruel can be absolutely loathed, by everyone, even if what they did can't possibly be compared to the Gundam character.

It's not that you can't make a good character if you go beyond this point, it's the opposite really: there's plenty of good, memorable characters who are festering shitholes devoid of positive character traits, but we're not expected to find them sympathetic, just really cool or iconic in some way. Making them sympathetic imposes limits on how out there that character can be.

I call it the 'Dabi' benchmark because I feel like Dabi is the perfect example of an edge case, a person who is horrific and broken, but you can still just feel for him why he's like this. It's core to his fundamental design as a character, from his traumatic backstory, to how he's broken and scarred and barely held together by his sheer will, so that while he's an objectively terrible person, cruel, sadistic, who kills easily and wants only to destroy, the reason he's like that is something intrinsically understandable and thus easy to sympathize with.

(Of course, the problem with Dabi is that, as MHA went on, Hori kept changing Endeavour to try and make him sympathetic, while at times intentionally making Dabi seem more at fault for his situation to mitigate Endeavour's blame, which damaged Dabi's characterization on a fundamental level and makes him less sympathetic... but that's not Dabi's fault, that's inconsistent writing)

At the same time, though, I must repeat that he is a terrible human being who does horrible things, and which puts him at that very edge of sympathy, only being accepted by people by how good his backstory is, how fucked up yet human is motivations ultimately are. If his actions had pushed beyond that point, if, for example, instead of just killing people he cold bloodedly tortured them for no real reason, his reception would have been less positive than it was.

In short? The farther a character goes past the Dabi Benchmark of Insanity, that is to say, the more a character is crazier than Dabi, the more people are going to look at you like you're crazy when you try to make them seem sympathetic to the audience.

Mainly a thing in animation (tho comes up in CGI in otherwise live action movies or w/e). the male of an animal species will range from somewhat anthropomorphic to looking pretty much like a normal animal, but the female of (supposedly) the same species will be extremely anthropomorphised & sexualised. often includes long hair on the head, heavy makeup, and boobs where the animals they are supposed to represent usually have none of those, and the males usually don't have any either

Aside from the obvious sleazy aspect, it is also, in my opinion as a working character designer, deeply uninspired and often a symptom of a lack of real consideration going into the designs and/or world-building.

Okay so I've just GOTTA know... how the hell do you write the way you do?? I haven't been able to get sucked into any written work since high school, trauma brain and all. I used to live in books so it's been hell, but your writing got me back into reading, and makes it so I can get lost into that little world again, which I've craved but been able to have for like... so long. Writing is something I've always been into, but I let my fear of failure and need for perfection stop me. Just... do you have any advice for beginners?? It would mean the world to me, but I understand if it's an annoying ask! Thanks for reading no matter what!

As far as tips on writing, I feel like I am not the person to ask because I'm just this little weirdo on the internet who likes turtles lol. But!! In an attempt to try and give real advice here is my response... and it got a little wordy so it's all under the break lmaoooo.

Practice! Literally the only reason I can string coherent words together is because I've been doing this as a hobby for like two whole decades.

Also!! Read! Consuming other fics and books really helps. Sometimes you find a way of saying something that sticks with you. Sometimes you sit and think "I would have done it this way/said it this way." Sometimes you come out on the other end and go "Wow I am a hack that was amazing." Sometimes you finish something and go "Wow that was fucking terrible I'm amazing." Sometimes you read something and it fires off your brain, and you are left itching to write your own story. But however you feel, it's all GOOD FOR WRITING. It helps you grow! It literally helps you find your voice!

Other little things; When I write, I truly immerse myself. I am playing out in cinema format what is happening in the "scene." How is this person reacting? How do they look- down to facial expressions. How are they feeling? Is this something they would say? (would they fucking say that??? is something I think to myself every time I open a doc) And when I write it all down, I try my very best to convey that "scene" that played out in my head. I try to capture that character's voice, their mannerisms, their habits.

Does this even make sense? I sure hope so.

Also, flow. Make sure we're moving right along. Keep track of where hands, legs, and torsos are. If they were sitting when the scene started, and you need them standing to kiss or fight or do a thumb war, at some point you need to make sure you say they stood up. If a hand was on a cheek, it can't suddenly be on an ankle without telling the reader what happened.

I also just think adding little details helps with immersion. When we talk to people, we don't just stand around. We fidget. We pick our nails or scratch our arms or shuffle our feet. All those little details can add to that immersion (or I think so, I'm no expert). "He blushed and rubbed the back of his neck before saying..." - Wow, what an awkward little shit. "They scrunched their nose and gave a near-violent eye-roll" - Oh ok they are annoyed! "She shifted her feet and replied"- cool she's being a person, I shift my feet too, neato.

Anyway, nothing I wrote 20 years ago is as good as it is now. I'm highly convinced that I'll think the same thing in another 10 years, about anything I've published recently. But it is getting better, and it's because I keep at it. Having friends in the fandom and beta readers really helps. Make sure you find someone who you know will be positive but honest. And remember, YOU are always going to be your own worst critic.

Alright, JFC, I am seriously fighting off some serious brain rot but hopefully I can call the demons back and set them in their rightful places. Until then we get this.

In LNE right after the Ministry of Magic battle, some Death Eaters are captured, Felix Rosier among them. Talbott Winger is the one to interrogate him and this is what happens.

Finding himself finally alone since the battle, despite it being an interrogation room inside the Ministry of Magic, Felix cradled his head in sweaty dirty palms, a strangled yell leaving his lips, eyes screwed shut so tightly, small phosphenes blurred through the darkness of his vision. However, even despite that, one image was very clear inside his mind.

He was playing it on repeat, tears escaping their prison, the image of Talia lifting her hand to her face, followed by the killing curse she launched upon herself played, the sound of her body hitting the floor echoing terribly loud inside his mind. It was madness, a move he could have never predicted, especially from her. As if all those months spent together, running from the Death Eaters, trying to survive meant nothing.

Hearing the door open, he stilled, silent tears still falling, but he did not lift his head as he sniffed his nose. Jumping slightly as a file hit the table, he heard the chair scrape against the floor before his interrogator sat down “Last spell used: the killing curse, but I’m not surprised.”

That voice. He knew it. Slowly lifting his head, Felix witnessed Talbott sitting right across from him.

“What’s with that look? Did you figure I would be dead by now? Fat chance.” He sneered through his teeth, leaning in slightly “Now” he relaxed “based on the Crucio curses used on me and your wand attesting to using Avada Kedavra last, I think it’s enough to send you to Azkaban.” Writing down on the report, he smirked “Oh, and aiding the dark army of Voldemort. So tell me, how many did you kill tonight?”

Wiping his jaw of the tears, Felix’s eyes cast on the papers in front of him. He was smart enough to know he could not and would not escape prison “One.” He spoke not even caring if Talbott believed him, voice breaking as fresh tears bit as his eyes “Josep…” clearing his throat, he tried again “Josephine Crane.”

Talbott’s fingers stopped working, eyes lifting to look at Felix “Run that by me.” Placing the quill on the table, he could clearly notice the struggle in the man before him.

“She…” Felix felt like he could not breathe “I could…” he breathed in slightly “I was not able to…”

“What you need to be able to do is tell what happened. Now.” Talbott spoke slowly, Felix swallowing thickly.

“Talia.” Talbott witnessed the pain on his face, Felix covering his face once more, a sob leaving him.

“What happened?” he asked, voice considerably softer. He knew she was safe, she was sitting in Mirunna’s office, instructions being left to not let her leave until he was done with his interviews.

“She killed herself.” Felix spoke breaking down “She used the killing curse on herself.” he barely managed to get out.

Talbott froze in place upon hearing those words. Felix witnessed Talia die and he clearly did not know of her ability to come back to life. He was genuinely distraught, breaking at the seams right in front of him, Talbott actually feeling sorry for him. He had felt that pain as well, before her powers came to a full circle, before she herself knew she could do it.

But a dark part of him spoke to him. Talia did not trust Felix enough in order to relate to him what she was. She held it as leverage and it served its purpose.

Another part of him wanted to put Felix out of his misery, tell him everything, but the rational part won. Even if Felix was to go to Azkaban, there was no telling what the remaining Death Eaters would do. If they would go after their convicted comrades. So instead, he remained silent, letting Felix cry, keeping the information to himself.

“She was mad.” Felix continued “Her body crumbled to the floor and she lunged at her, severed her skin, talking about taking her heart, how she would save us all. I could not witness that.” Lifting his eyes, Felix calmed down for a second “I could not let her desecrate Talia that way.”

“I understand.” Talbott spoke, Felix’s eyes widening “I would have done the same.”

“But were not in my position.” Felix spat out, Talbott only nodding.

As much as Felix cursed his family name to oblivion and back, hated that maybe it was because of him everything happened, in that very moment his anger took a toll, being directed somewhere else. Hitting the table with his fists, he shook from the sheer force of his hate “You could have loved her properly, saved her.”

“Don’t.” Talbott warned him.

“She suffered you know and she did not deserve it. She hated the sanctuary, but somehow never could hate you. Not even after exiling her, after all the bloody shit you pulled.”

He had never believed Felix when they fought on the street of London. He had never considered his words as true and that he sacrificed himself in order to save Talia. But looking at him in that very moment, he could acknowledge the bitter blow, Talbott just nodding.

Felix loved her and did everything in his power to help her, there was no doubt about it, he had made the decision willingly in order for her to escape.

But she did not, no, Talia never knew when to back down and for that she suffered in the past.

Taking his leave, Felix being once more alone in the integration room, Talbott though she should have learned her lesson back in the Auror camp. To stop coming to everyone’s’ safety. To stop trying.

But as he spoke to her in Mirunna’s office, she was just as stubborn and more dangerously, she was unhinged. And she too cared for Felix, threatening Dumbledore of all people if he did not hold his end of the bargain she would kill him herself. Well, bargain was putting it far too mildly, she actually gave him an ultimatum.

So imagine Felix Rosier’s surprise when he exited the interrogation room and instead of escorts to Azkaban he stood in front of Dumbledore, shackles on his hands coming undone.

Extending an address to him, only a few words were spoken “There are still people who care about you Felix. Do not give up.”

And imagine his surprise when Talia stood before him once more later on, alive, challenging him and his trusting heart.

Look, I’m Black. I remember seeing those videos of how shitty those Ukrainian and Polish border guards were treating Black students who were fleeing war. That was wrong and inexcusable. Period. I knew you would like that episode! Just the whole thing of Colby just happily macking with a ghost the whole time while everyone else is having a terrible, terrible time...high comedy lol. Not to mention, this is Colby's charisma and "rizz" as the kids call it on full display.

To me, it's almost like he got a contact high from the ghost; like he came out of that room looking like he just had the Pink Floyd cranked and was feeling no pain lol. But it was interesting how it started out with him not feeling well, but once he got in a room alone with this ghost and he felt comfortable and safe, the vibes changed.

one of my pet peeves, as you already know: when people write Ed and Izzy backstory and make them the same age, or WORSE, when they write Izzy as younger. It's INTERESTING to me, to think about the possible trajectories of these two people when the subordinate is almost a decade older than his boss, especially with [waves hands at whatever the FUCK Izzy has going on]. What is it like/what does it mean, that he's a wholeass adult getting into this coworker/failmarriage situation?

And then, also, I didn't want to make it shippy, because I just didn't, and then finally I wanted to look at it from Ed's point of view, because again: it's something I hadn't seen and was curious about exploring.

So I just kind of had this question curled around in my head, of them as adults (but Ed still relatively young) and what about it worked from Ed's perspective, at the outset? What red flags was he ignoring? What was useful to him about Izzy?

(other pet peeve of things I see in other fic: jfc Izzy was not part of the Hornigold crew are you fucking kidding me - so conceiving of something took that into account: probably my favorite line in the whole fic is Not going to miss deckhands getting broken ribs doing yardies - Izzy and Jack being enemies is funny as hell as far as I'm concerned)

And like CLEARLY as I was writing it I was working out some feelings about [redacted] and how that all got started, and if you wind back all the things that are terrible between two people, what they look like when you think maybe those same things are good, because you're young and you don't know any better.

I think if I wrote it again now, I'd probably have a slightly different take. (Sometimes I think about writing a totally different backstory where they meet up somewhat later than in Wage Wars, because that idea is also interesting in a different way; it changes the power dynamic, and I think might have a slightly more self-aware Ed?) But I still feel good about this piece, the kind of subtle tension of something that's ultimately doomed, I guess.

#writing wage wars reminded me of something in EMDR where I had to tell my therapist 'no we weren't *kids* we were both wholeass adults' #and that's it that's the fic #so yeah I was doing some processing or whatever #but I also think it works without that background #also it's wild to me that we got to hear the song like a week early #and it turned out to be the perfect title #ask games #my fic

My dad just had me watch The Abyss and I have many thoughts (both my dad and I are somewhat experienced rec divers (70+ dives)) and I really enjoyed this movie although my mom did accuse us of being divers who liked to watch stories about horrible things happening underwater and made fun of us

- very first shot of Lindsey, we see her stiletto touch down on the deck of this ship with perfect balance good for her

-mustache navy man so afraid to admit a woman knows more then him that he hides symptoms what could go wrong

- the entire exploring the downed sub sequence my dad and I are arguing about wether or not they are using a line for navigation because we can’t see it

- finally spot the line they are using and I’ve never dove a line before but I know enough to know they are doing it poorly

-also why does it look like a fancy curtain pull no wonder it broke

- alien thingie shows up and all the equipment loses power(?) or malfunctions and this means the sub crashed because of one of them

- if the guy who fucked up his mix didn’t get hurt in the initial convulsions he’s probably going to be fine

- there’s a storm coming and the navy guys fucked off to fuck around with nukes fuck them seven people died because you wanted to play with a bomb (6ppl on rig +guy in crane)

-this situation would be less stressful if someone turned off that goddamn music

-“raise your hand if you think that was a Russian water tentacle” single best line in the film

- Lindsey should have been allowed to slap him in the face

- man with psychosis has gun and nuke all signs point downhill

When they think she’s dead??? It’s been like thirty seconds and there is no reason to take it out? Even if she’s dead there’s no way it could make the situation worse and if she’s alive it’s kinda fucking important?????

- then there’s that tender conversation and all I can think about is where they got dry clothes from because you know everything on that rig is now damp and salty and also curly hair is a bitch to dry

- now bud is going down in the liquid gear which has made it’s reappearance after being mentioned once an hour ago

- the worst part about the whole descending sequence is that there’s not even anything to be mad about because it’s a terrible idea but there is literally nothing else that can be done there is no better option

- I do love the bit with the colored wires tho because it is seriously hard to differentiate color at depth and it was super relatable

- but he literally just guessed because at this point why the fuck not 50/50

- and then he’s dying and I’m crying and it’s very sad but it’s also okay because he did what he needed to do to give everyone else a chance and he’s made his peace with that but somehow that’s the saddest part

-was worried that at the very end when the alien ship brought them up and I saw the hatch to the rig open that that were going to just explode because of the pressure differential

Personal nonsense

You know, it's a wild feeling to see people you know blocking and calling someone out for doing something but then they still follow me and it's common knowledge that I not only do the same thing but have done it for longer. Like, imagine not even being cared about enough to be hated? Wild. They've never really been friends to me, so I have no feelings about it one way or the other, it's just like. This scenario is one of those things where it's like, yeah, I knew you didn't give a single shit about me, but jfc. I'd rather if you'd blocked me too. Ok, I lied about it not affecting me at all, I do hate feeling looked over and insignificant. It's something I've always hated and these motherfuckers have never ceased to make me feel that way, especially during my lowest points, for over a decade.

They wonder why anyone would reconnect with someone they hate (rightfully because he did some honest to God horrible abusive shit 10 years ago), when literally when I started talking to him again by accident he was a better friend to me in 1 week than they've been to me in over 10 years. I'm sure the same thing happened to the other person, the person they're actually mad at tbh.

When a former abuser has become a better person than you on every level, it miiiiiiiiight be time to reassess yourself. 🤔 Not that I blame them for cutting ties in this case, but they've always been fucking terrible people and shitty "friends", especially to me so I can't rightfully feel bad about any of this, ESPECIALLY when again they seem to have completely forgotten about me even though I literally regularly see one of them.
