I'm playing Judgement, a yakuza spin off game

And its so fucking funny like I hear in reviews it's story is SO good but I also hear do NOT search more about the story you will spoil it and you'll enjoy it more being surprised. And like yeah that tracks, it's a detective game so the mystery is part of the fun. But also I really reallyyyy want to know why the story is considered so freaking amazing. The last game I controlled my curiosity on was Nier Automata. And yes, that game was worth knowing nothing besides "play 5 times." I was spoiled on Drakengard 3 though and that was still fun af. Point is I'm just so curious what makes Judgements story so utterly Great. Because sure, it's fun and well written so far. But it also doesn't seem any more impressive than Yakuza 7 Like a Dragon using corrupt politicians and purity culture Bleach protestors to make interesting commentary.... Judgement looks to be going in a government critique, corporations loving money more than peoples wellbeing angle, crime and government and corruption ties. But I'm not seeing anything mindblowing or particularly unique yet (I'm in like chapter 6 I think?). I'm sure it'll be a good fun detective story with meaningful writing. I'm not nearly as sure it'll be anything so amazing I'll think of the story as a step above. But then also like... if a story sucks or characterization arcs suck, I will not even play a game. So I'm comparing Judgement to other good games, and it's matching that fine. If the norm for detective games or crime games is shit weak stories, then yeah I imagine Judgement would stand out... but I also would have no idea it stands out compared to something else.

I also saw Judgement described as Ace Attorney mixed with Yakuza and YEAH. FUCK. For both better or worse lol. As you know, Yakuza games are one part intense angst sad times crime drama in game form, and one part balls to the wall silly shit (you'd have to play to see what I mean but a chicken as your real estate manager, a bug fighting card game where you wrestle nearly naked women, fighting people as a cute mascot, stopping a ghost haunting scam, your rival stripping for you, are just a few ordinary yakuza game moments). Judgement is the same, in that it's serious parts could equate to a well written crime drama I'd watch (and that will probably make me sob), and it's silly parts include stopping a panty stealing stalker and getting so drunk Yagami nearly dies to help pay a friend's friends tuition at a host club and pretending to be Dracula in a press interview. I love a mix of intense angst heavy drama that makes me contemplate life, and silly wild shit that's oddly heart warming (it's probably all Kingdom Heart's fault and Yakuza games also offer this nice combo). Well... sometimes Judgement gives you some Ace Attorney bullshit exactly as silly as Ace Attorney, which is fun. You're solving the silliest fucking case, people are yelling ridiculous things, you're yelling objection, everything's fine. But then sometimes... Judgement will make you do crime solving of heavy plot shit you've been following for like 20 hours now and if you make a wrong choice or move you could fuck yourself utterly over and god is it STRESSFUL. I stopped playing the game for a month, came back to it, and the game expected me to remember the name of informant leads and murder victims and government agencies that had come up in prior interviews like 10 hours prior (and a whole month prior since I took time off playing). And my brain doesn't remember long term well lmao. I was drowning on the edge of my seat guessing blindly hoping I fucking guessed right on intuition because I had no idea a jdrama style bulk of scenes was going to Lead to me needing to come to detective conclusions and decisions without any Time prior to look at the Case Files. (And thank fuck for the Case Files area in the game, for people like me who forgot fucking everything during game breaks). It's like Ace Attorney except I fear losing 6 hours of game progress and dying, and my poor cute friends of Yagami getting killed or something, if I fuck up a main story case. Now... maybe it's more rigidly structured than I think and its hard to Actually Fuck up a main plot section... but it does not Feel rigid, it feels like you can fuck up at any moment, and in a way thats cool cause you also feel very much like Yagami. It makes the emotional elements of the game work well, because it makes it easy to care the way the protagonist Yagami is caring and feeling. And just like him, I sure feel stressed and like I'm gonna fail (again) horrifically as a lawyer and get people killed. The Yakuza games NEVER made me feel this much dread, because ultimately yakuza games come down to following through the plot and winning the fights (or dying and retrying the fights). Because Judgement makes me actually have to piece together things, gives chances to pick dumb options that will fuck me over or at least feel like they will (in contrast to Yakuza where if you pick the dumb option it's funny and never results in game over). It definitely feels like PLAYING a crime drama. Which I find fun but very Intense at times.

For that reason alone, I'd recommend it if you're into crime dramas or detective games or action games with mysteries. The crime solving investigation moments are probably not super involved or hard (or I'd give up), but the overall effect of everything together does feel like a good experience where you feel like a detective in this kind of story. And being a Yakuza series type story, it's heavy as hell emotionally with good characters.

Then of course. Judgement, like all Yakzua games, is really pretty. Realistic character models with good acting, an apparently excellent English dub (though I'm playing the Japanese version which is great as expected), a very pretty and detailed virtual experience of the city (which all the yakuza games nail), fun action combat (that's easy enough to learn but complicated enough to get more involved in it Than I do), various fun things to do (racing, mini games like playing Mortal Kombat inside the game, investigating, tools, side stories of various wild things to do).

On Godzilla's voice, cuz I've seen a few people weigh in on it:

I do like the Kratos idea. Fits very well and I hadn't actually heard that as his headcanon voice before. I've actually heard and had this exact conversation a lot with people lol, so here's some other ones I've heard as well as my own personal HC for this.

Surprisingly, I've heard Iron Bull more for Goji than I have Kong. Granted, in the same breath I've also heard Ramon Tikaram (voice of Godrick in Elden Ring, Ramattra in Overwatch, someone from FF16 who's name I can't remember and doesn't show up on IMDB, and most importantly Dorian Pavus from DA:I) as Ichi's voice. I actually really vibe with Ichi sounding like Dorian just because I think it's funny, but yeah I can also see why you'd have him sounding much more menacing having written Abraxas. Also the implication of Goji being Bull and Ichi being Dorian is equally funny to me.

A long time ago someone made the connection between Mothra and Aerith from FF7 and that has lived in my head rent free for so long that I can never unhear it. Had a brief period when I thought of Goji sounding like Cloud, eventually abandoned that for my actual HC in the next paragraph.

The voice I personally hear him with is Daisuke Tsuji's Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. Someone (I think it was Dougherty, can't remember exactly tho) once described Legendary Goji's personality as 'The Last Samurai' archetype, and I guess that really stuck with me when I played Tsushima. Jin's just general- everything- in that game reminds me of Goji a lot. He's protecting his domain from those that seek to conquer it or do it harm, calm and stoic with rare bursts of emotion, can occasionally be snarky or humorous with people he trusts, etc. Idk he just really does it for me lol.

Y'know, I've only ever heard the Japanese dub for Ghost of Tsushima (I keep forgetting there's an English dub), but I'd say Jin's Japanese VA might be good for Goji as well. I wanna say Gareth Edwards was the one who made the samurai comparison? It feels appropriate considering Goji was characterized as old and tired in 2014.

Y'know I get people are being pretty doom and gloom right now for 2024 consoles. What with the Nintendo Switch 2 potentially being pushed back, Playstation has no plans to release a big established first party game in 2024, and Xbox moving games to other consoles.

But I wanna look at the positives. 2024 can be the year of me finally getting through my backlog of games. Sure its a bummer that there might not be a new Metroid, Fire Emblem, God of War, Ghosts of Tsushima, Rachet and Clank, etc. but hey now I have time to actually finish things that have been sitting on my shelf for literal years.

I have Shadows of War definitive edition and still haven't played it despite loving Shadows of Mordor. Oh yeah Metroid Prime Remaster? Haven't finished that either. I have some games I even want to replay like Second Sight on my OG Xbox.

[thoughts and small analysis on kazuha’s GAA domain, Kazuha’s story quest spoilers warning too]

Ooooh boyyyy his quest was unexpectedly really long. It was really good, however! I would consider it in the S tier hehe

I just want to talk about the design of the domain first because WOW. The domain looking different every time you enter to represent the different times in Kazuha’s life/story. The mechanics were very interesting (despite it giving me vertigo and a headache NSJSJ 😭😭😭). There’s just a lot of care that went into this domain. I was pleasantly surprised when they tossed in that old akira kurosawa film filter and locked the camera. It was a small design choice but it added a lot to the experience.

And regarding the actual story and execution, I really preferred the domain over his story quest. However, now that I look back, I think this was more of a personal preference than how good it was objectively. The two quest serves separate purposes. His story quest was more focused on reconnecting with his clan’s legacy meanwhile not letting this define who he is in the present. Essentially, how will he bring honor to his clan while maintaining his current self and ideals. Meanwhile, the domain is a FAT summary of his story since he was young and all the way to the present. It was more of an introspection dump, a story of healing and reconciliation of the past and the present. There’s no ACTUAL development of his character, but more of a deeper delve into how he developed his emotional maturity and how he accepted his past.

We already know his story (him carrying his family legacy, fleeing Inazuma, becoming a hero essentially overnight, blah blah) so I’m glad they focused on what he felt in the moment and how learned to leave everything behind and move on. It was really moving to listen to his dialogues with his father and him wanting better for his son ;~; it was especially bad when Kazuha was convinced he was a disappointment to his clan PLEASE. I was so shocked to hear him raise his voice like that. Normally, he’s so tranquil and polite. So it clearly weighed his mind a lot. I could’ve cried right there. And the small detail of the seelie representing Tomo…. god. 💀 let me die in peace….. the Alcor being his last destination of the domain is just so beautiful. He really is at home and out here enjoying his life!!!!! 😭

This is more of a side thought I have so feel free to skip but when I played this domain, I just can’t help but think about this game that I played called Ghost of Tsushima. The protagonist of that game (Jin), I thought, was somewhat similar to Kazuha. Very different plot but shared some nice parallel. They both come from prominent clans and had a bright future ahead of them. But they eventually faced obstacles that led them to reassess their identity and learn to let go of the past. Jin is afraid to abandon his samurai ways in fears of losing his father figure while Kazuha was torn between honoring his clan/past and living how he truly wants to. I personally think it’s such a wonderful trope. Watching characters liberate themselves from their past yet still remain so kind-hearted and humble is 👩🏻‍🍳💋

One of the things that I didn’t like about the domain and moments that lead up to it was that so many things were rehashed. Some of the characters repeated what happened at the inazuma festival and when Raiden Shogun still reigned. It might have been for new players but for me, it just hogged so much time that could’ve been spent for more Kazuha’s monologue or something. I already knew that the domain was gonna repeat aspect of Kazuha’s story but please I don’t wanna hear word for word what happened at the festival again 💀

But this domain just shows that Kazuha is the ultimate comfort character lmao he is so sympathetic and so patient with himself. His emotional maturity is something to be envious of, especially for someone his age. His life was so tumultuous yet he still held his head high and continues to anticipate for the future, not consumed by any extreme emotions. And the latter COULD’VE happened bc he literally lost everyone he loved in his life. He is the epitome of “live in the moment” and “home is where the heart is” signs that you would hang in the washroom LOL

I love that we are starting Inazuma with Kazuha and also ending with him. His story is a counterpart to Raiden’s old desire for eternity. Raiden is about stagnation and absolute stasis. Kazuha is about forgiveness, trauma acceptance and moving on with one’s life. They’re the polar opposites of each other (at least pre-archon quest Raiden anyway). It feels like the opening and closing of a chapter, which we are doing with Sumeru!

Anyways this GAA is already a banger and probably gonna be even better than last years. I’m SO excited for everybody else’s domain. Idk how they’ll do Xinyan bc we know so little of her and HYV always shove her in random events LOL. This was amazing so I can’t wait for more lore dump.

It makes me sad there is hardly any content for the ghost of tsushima games. And its such a good game.

I dunno if its because of the whole thing of it not getting as much love as other games when it came out. Or if it's people fearing of doing any x readers,self inserts or ocs. Like y'all do it with other period/history based anime,games and movies,why is this any different? This hasn't stopped people.

But for some reason there isn't any content. Maybe art here n there. But hardly anyone writes about the characters.

I honestly don't know the reason why there is such little to no content. You'd think people would be all over it.

But maybe people still have this weird prejudice about games based around asian cultures,i know it's not always the case tho. Specifically Japanese culture,that isn't anime like or modern era based. And if it is period or more history based. Then its always during the edo or meiji periods. Which dont get me wrong. Is pretty interesting. And still great. But japan has a rich history and many periods to base your stories after. Feudal japan is quite interesting in itself. Maybe prejudice is a strong word. I dunno it's just people are weird about certain themes in stories I've noticed. Maybe im reading too much into it.

Heck a lot of the feudal history throughout human history is interesting.

I know some people just aren't into it. Anf thats fine. I just am curious. Again this isn't to point fingers or vent.

I just am genuinely and innocently curious as to why this fandom is so small.

But if you aren't looking for realism for any x reader or fic material for this game. There is plenty of mythos in the game you can play off of.

I just feel so sad this is a missed opportunity for creativity too.

I mostly just talk/think about my comfort characters, so...Ryuzo my beloved. Even though my hyperfixation on the game has been slipping away a bit, my love for him still stands! You can’t go wrong with a character that’s your fictional boyfriend, caregiver, and regressor. He’s just my silly poor little meow meow-

But we can’t leave out Jin and Yuna, of course!! They’re my big sibs and I love them very much <3 I actually crocheted a doll of Yuna so she can always be with me!

Anyways, I definitely would recommend giving the game a try! It’s very fun and the scenery is beautiful! I cried quite a bit over the story, so prepare yourself for that if you happen to be a sensitive person like me. (Everyone is agere coded if that helps persuade you more-)

Just wondering what is your process for Virtual Photography - I've dabbled for a few years but only through in game cameras on playstation - is it mainly a PC thing with software? Love your photo's, especially AC Odyssey Kassandra!

Hmmm I don't have a set process tbh since I play on both PC and PS5, so it's really up to my mood what I wanna play at a given moment. Some days I don't wanna deal with mods so I come back to HFW, but other days I wanna do a NG+ in Ghost of Tsushima because the PS5 is amazing and you get more outfits. Some days I feel like suffering with mods and game crashing because I push the game too far, then I'll go for PC. My "process" is mainly fun and then take pics along the way. Some days I just play and no pic, other days I watch Sailor Moon or re-read Rose of Versailles, some random days I test mod ideas instead, just whatever my brain and mood take me, because VP is just a hobby so I prioritize what helps me relax the most. Right now I'm in the mood of finishing AC Syndicate (just finish the main game and heading to DLCs soon).

when da4 comes out I'm going to wait for one of you to play and tell me if we can jump and climb properly before I choose a character because like......how can anyone expect me to be a crow and not do parkour. at the very least Ghost of Tsushima standard climbing and ledge catching.

Bounced off Dragon's Dogma 2 real hard. I don't think it's bad but the intentional friction (which I like, conceptually!) is just the perfect type of friction to slowly irritate me as I go. And the controls are kind of whack I expected a bit more from Itsuno/Capcom.

Nitpick that drove me up the wall is that an open world game should never have the camera hug your character so tightly. I want to zoom out! Look around! See some shit! Game feels like walking down a cramped hallway for the first few hours I played. The intent I think is that it helps the combat, and it does for sure. But I wanna look around.

There's a lot there for people who are into it to like but this is another Ghost of Tsushima for me. Fucking deflected off of it through not a *lot* of fault of its own. But the small shit that bugs me, drives me insane after a bit.
