i think there’s a real chance that loona, weki meki, and dreamcatcher all come back in june. and if they overlap with fromis’s promotions, then all four of my main ult groups that i’ve had since 2019 will be promoting all at once.
tho tbh i dont think that’s likely, i think fromis and loona could definitely overlap because loona seem like theyre only days from announcing their comeback (so it could happen in late may, actually), and weki meki i think need to come back soon so hopefully early-ish in june, and they’ll probably overlap... but dreamcatcher... i have a hunch that they’ll be late june or early-to-mid july. so they probably wont overlap with fromis. this could be the closest its ever come to all four of my main ults promoting at the same time, but i think it just baaarely wont overlap. i mean for all i know, dc might not come back again until autumn, if they stick to their two-cbs-per-year thing. but i really do think they’re gonna do 3 this year, which is easier bc their first was in january lol, that gives them a lot of time.
but so if this does happen, obviously it means that theyll all be competing against each other, but thats fine i think. the good outweighs the bad. interactions are good, and also just like... idk... i like music, and i like getting a ton of new stuff at once. twice is gonna be promoting in june anyway, so it’ll be an uphill battle even if only one other group comes back in june or whatever lol. i’d rather have them all come back during a difficult and super-stacked month than have them all wait for an “easy” month that will never come because of how stacked kpop in general is nowadays. music show wins are awesome, but they’re not the most important thing. music and performances are, lol. if groups are in it solely for wins, then they should be a sports team or something, not a music group. wins are an important goal for all of them, im sure, but i mean at the end of the day i bet what matters most to them is releasing music and performing performances that they can be proud of, so yeah, ive never had a problem with a ton of groups i like coming back at the same time and “competing” with each other. especially if they become friends haha
#weeekly are also an ult group now and i think at this point theyre probably higher than loona for me....#but thats a recent development lol. ive had a definite top 4 for like two years now and it hasnt changed#well the order of the groups has changed lol but its been the same four groups at the top for a long time#i only got into kpop 2 years ago lol so its been my entire time#until recently lol cause i gotta recognize that weeekly are at that level for me now#and loona have fallen off a little bit :( i'd love to really reignite my passion for them though! i wanna have another loona phase#rn im still in weeekly phase and ive been there since after school. theyre my current favorite group#not my overall favorite group... thats still weme and dc. but like... you know what i mean? my favorite group at the moment#like... theyre the group im focused on at the moment. theyre not my all time favorite but theyre my current favorite#like how in a sport you can say theres the greatest player of all time but they might not be the current number 1#the current number 1 is some up and comer who is really hot right now but the all-time number 1 is based on legacy#and like amount of time spent as number 1. theyll fall off the top occasionally but maybe they could jump right back in#and be the best again if they try for it. sorry lol this is a topic for another post#i watch a lot of fighting game stuff so im thinking of discussions about best players as an analogy lol#like whether mango or armada is the best melee player of all time.. even though zain is number 1 in the world rn#weme and dc are my favorite groups of all time.. even tho weeekly are number 1 for me right now hahaha#and im sure when fromis come back i'll enter a fromis phase and they'll be my favorite for a while#im SUCH a nerd#i took my adhd pill about two hours ago which means this really is peak ramble territory#that always happens right around this time lol. 2 to 3 hours after taking it i just get really talkative#but like in a very stream of consciousness way#and if im not posting stuff like this then im just saying it all to myself out loud in my room lmao pretending im a youtuber or smth#or im super glued in to something... laser-focused... completely absorbed. i mean thats what it is lol#2-3 hours after taking vyvanse seems to be when my laser-focus is at its most potent... and so if im talking about stuff..#then this is what happens haha. ive im working on something#then i'll get super focused on it and the whole world fades away and i lose track of time completely#and then 5-6 hours after taking it i just kinda crash and feel super tired and depressed and i take a nap. it happens#vyvanse is a stimulant so it works kinda like caffeine. caffeine is a stimulant too after all.#why am i writing all this? idk lol. but do you see what i have to deal with every day? this is my brain lol#just be glad i dont post stuff like this all the time

Marcel Hirscher: The skier with an ad value of $11 billion
In skiing, all the talk this season has been about Lindsey Vonn’s quest to pass Ingemar Stenmark as the most successful racer of all time.
If so, Austria’s Marcel Hirscher is already history’s best ski racer. The 29-year-old has 68 wins and counting and is closing in on an unprecedented eighth straight World Cup overall crown — for the skier who amasses the most points across all disciplines over the season.
By comparison, double Olympic champion Stenmark — a Swedish icon alongside tennis great Bjorn Borg in the late 1970s and early 1980s — only won the overall title three times.
So while Hirscher’s name may not transcend skiing in the way that Vonn has — for any number of cultural and sociological reasons — he deserves to be recognised as one of sport’s greatest exponents.
“I would place him in same range as Stenmark,” Peter Schrocksnadel, veteran head of the Austrian Ski Federation, told CNN Sport in Kitzbuhel at the annual Hahnekamm races in January.
“He could make it (the record) — maybe he doesn’t want to make it — but I think he’s in that range. At least.”

Supreme focus
Hirscher, like Stenmark, is a technical expert, excelling in the rhythmic dance of slalom and giant slalom rather than the brute power and bravado of the speed events.
His poise under pressure, and ability to find speed even on the most intricate of courses is legendary. His nearest rival in recent seasons, Henrik Kristoffersen, can attest to the almost supernatural power of Hirscher’s second-run charges.
This season he has again been stellar, trading regular victories with fellow phenom Mikaela Shiffrin, who could yet eclipse everybody.
But with 10 wins so far this term, Hirscher is marching inexorably towards Stenmark’s total tally.
The defending world champion in slalom and giant slalom could also add to his seven world titles in Are, Sweden this week.
Back home in skiing-mad Austria, Hirscher has been a bona fide superstar for years. As a product of his millennial generation, he has a huge social media fan base, following his life in skiing, fitness, car racing, motorbikes and beyond. He even has his own magazine called “Heroes.”
Such is his popularity and fame — eclipsing Bayern Munich star David Alaba or tennis player Dominic Thiem — that even going out in public is problematic, according to journalist Florian Madl of Innsbruck-based daily paper Tiroler Tageszeitung.
“He won’t walk down the street,” Madl told CNN in Kitzbuhel. “It would take 20 minutes to do what should take him 20 seconds.”
Hirscher is a five-time Austrian Sports Personality of the Year and was recently named “Champion of Champions” for 2018 by French newspaper L’Equipe, joining sporting greats such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Usain Bolt and Lionel Messi to have been honored.
In January, Eurosport named him Sportsman of the Year, ahead of fellow nominees such as Novak Djokovic, Simone Biles and Lewis Hamilton.
“What makes Marcel so great? It’s himself,” added Schrocksnadel.
“He’s the most focused skier I know, since ever, and I’ve been in the business a long time. He doesn’t care how many first places he has, he wants to win the next one, that’s his focus.”

‘Hates to lose’
According to Hirscher, his body shape is the “perfect symmetry” for ski racing — not too small or tall and a good weight, and with “good genes” — but he believes his secret is his attention to detail.
And he always credits the team around him for his success. “I am not the better skier,” he says. “With my team, I am able to have my equipment on point.” But if it was just having the right gear, others could be as good.
Madl, who suggested the “grounded” Hirscher could have an advertising value of 10 billion euros ($11 billion), added: “He can’t lose. And he cannot hide that he can’t lose. While someone else is sleeping or relaxing he still picks on things like technique, or bindings or ski material or edge grip or whatever. There’s nearly no spare time, he uses all the time for his focus.”
Austria has spawned many men’s ski greats over the years, including the late Toni Sailer, a seven-time world champion and triple Olympic gold medalist in 1956. Then there’s speed merchant Hermann Maier, a four-time World Cup overall winner and double Olympic champion.
But another Austrian legend Franz Klammer says comparisons are worthless, given different events, conditions, equipment, physical fitness, nutrition, competition and other factors.
“It’s different, you cannot compare Toni Sailer with Marcel Hirscher,” Klammer, the five-time World Cup downhill champion and 1976 OIympic downhill gold medallist, told CNN in Kitzbuhel.
“They are different times, different situations — downhill skiers are different to slalom skiers. But Hirscher is definitely one of the best ever.”
READ: Skiing’s bucket-list party even Arnie can’t miss
If Hirscher has been impressive this season, last year’s achievements were arguably more remarkable. He broke his ankle on his first training day on snow in August 2017, fearing his dreams of Olympic glory — even his career — could be over.
But racing with no pressure, he blew away Kristoffersen, and stormed to 13 wins on the World Cup circuit as well as clinching his first Olympic gold medals, clinching the giant slalom and combined in Pyeongchang.
In his regular blog at the end of last season, Hirscher quashed rumours he would switch to the speed disciplines to refresh his motivation.
But when he married his partner Laura last summer and the couple welcomed their first child — a boy — in the autumn, many observers thought ski racing would be pushed into the background.
However, if this season is anything to go by, Hirscher’s fire remains very much lit. And with the gap to Stenmark’s haul of wins shrinking quickly, there is every reason to expect Hirscher to become the G.O.A.T.

On Outdoor And Indoor Track And Field
By Peter Russell
Sports are a great influence. They keep one occupied, energized, and just overall healthy. For sure, these are things that are always up to be desired. However, in this case, there is something that you should take care to consider, optimization. Some are more sustainable and across the board than others. How about you try buffalo new york indoor track and field. Well, of course, you have heard of TAF. You were probably made to play it in PE, and you must have seen all those fancy players in track meets or else the herculean athletes on TV. However, the tagline indoor can seem kind of newfangled here. After all, due to the length and variation of the field, it just HAS to be played outdoors. Well, now you know that is not always the case. Anyway, its time to go on the stage setting for TAF. This sport is subsumed as an athletic contest, meaning that you will play against another team, with your own team. What makes this sport truly remarkable is that theres a whole host of skills up for the taking, if one has practiced it consistently. For example, you have running, jumping, and throwing. Track and field might sound like a mouthful of a name. Well, it only means to proffer what it is all about in the first place. In this appellation, you get the gist of where its usually played, that is, in a stadium. Specifically, its an ovoid running track, which is more or less usually encapsulating a grass field. In this central area, the jumping and throwing events are done. Now, lets get around to talking about the indoor type. As said, there are stadiums and arenas, but you also have the much smaller gymnasiums, and all things related. Then again, the multipurpose feature is just as important. Some arenas go on all out to be full sized, so that they can accommodate everything from the high jumps to the long distance foot races. Therese even a World Indoor Championship, for a game that is really meant for the interior. With more energy and concentration, you will find hefty and taxing tasks like multitasking easy peasy. This will actuate a domino effect in other areas of your life, making you more productive and satisfied. With an increased capacity for learning, memorizing, and retaining, you will up results as well as productivity. In general, you will experience a spike in your mental performance. And thats not just some commercial tag, either. Professional athletes and sportsmen aver to that. And then theres the jump and throw events. Respectively, the winners are those who have accomplished the greatest height and distance. With jumping, youve different kinds, like the pole vault, or else the high, long, and triple jumps. With the throw, you have discus, javelin, hammer, and shot put. Although you can see athletes that are good in one particular kind of throw, jump, or run, the best TAF athletes are usually across the board in their abilities. With consistent plays, plus the will to win, the athletes will experience a spike in motivation, and this is something that they will likely carry to other areas of their lives. It is not totally a far cry when we say that sports can really change your life for the better. By experience, theyll realize that stress and frustration are quintessential parts of everyday life, and theyll learn how to deal with these feelings better, so their coping skills are really spruced up. TAF relays transferrable skills. By transferrable, we mean that they are not usable within the scope and empery of the sport only. Chances are, when you have mastered the skills characteristic of this sport, then you can apply your agility in the others athletic activities out there. TAF itself is related to many other sports, like running, race walking, cross country running, and so on an so forth. And then you have the jumps and throws, which grant so much skill and ability.

NBA 2016-17 predictions: our writers forecast the playoffs and award winners
New Post has been published on https://writingguideto.com/must-see/nba-2016-17-predictions-our-writers-forecast-the-playoffs-and-award-winners/
NBA 2016-17 predictions: our writers forecast the playoffs and award winners
Will anyone stop the Warriors? Who will be named Most Valuable Player? Guardian writers give their takes on whats coming up this season
Im most looking forward to watching …
How teams deal with the Warriors. Or how the Warriors deal with themselves. Ill go with both. Seeing teams try to defend a lineup that has Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green will be fascinating. As will seeing how the Warriors keep everyone happy in an offense that features Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. DG
Last year injuries kept the Utah Jazz from making the playoffs but by January they should be completely healthy. Utah might not be the most exciting team but they are deep, good defensively and well coached. LC
How the Golden State Warriors are going to integrate Kevin Durant into their already historic offense. If anyone answers this differently theyre lying. HF
The most significant move of the NBA off-season is about to become the biggest story of the regular season. Just how might free agent signing Kevin Durant change the dynamic at Golden State? If he gels as quickly as pre-season suggests, the Warriors could push for 70 wins again. If not, theres the potential for the drama of disharmony. CS
Im least looking forward to watching …
The inevitable demise of Russell Westbrook. The (lone remaining) Thunder star plays with an edge and tenacity like no other athlete in sports and this season hell be more motivated than ever. But without Durant around anymore to help, the Thunder dont have a real shot no matter how well or angry Westbrook plays. And thats pretty depressing. DG
While most people will be excited to see how Golden State will fit all their stars into one lineup, there are enough players without big egos to make this work seamlessly. Perfection might actually make the Warriors more boring than people expect. LC
The New York Knicks, on and off the court. Its almost depressing to realize that Kristaps Porzingis is tied to this horrifically dysfunctional franchise. HF
The Houston Rockets. The NBAs most uninspiring team undermined my efforts to stay awake for last seasons midweek west coast games. Beyond the strange fascination with James Hardens beard, Ive no idea why theyre on TV so much. CS
The biggest surprise will be …
The Timberwolves grabbing a playoff spot in the West. A team featuring Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine (reportedly now armed with an NBA-quality jumper) nabbing a playoff spot in the West with 40-45 wins may not shock avid NBA watchers. But the Timberwolves have missed the postseason 12 years in a row. Basketball being played in Minnesota in late April would be news. DG
The Minnesota Timberwolves showed signs of growth last year with the growth of Karl-Anthony Townes and Andrew Wiggins. Now they have added the promising Kris Dunn to a backcourt with Zach LaVine. By seasons end they should be playing excellent defense. LC
The Eastern Conference will be more competitive and more entertaining than the Western Conference (Warriors excluded obviously). HF
Will this be the year the Clippers finally put it all together? Nope. Rather, itll finally sink that in Griffin, Jordan and Paul wont bring a Championship to LA. The Clips will lose in the first round of the play-offs and Paul will take a giant deal elsewhere next July. CS
The biggest disappointment will be
Will the Nets fail again this year? Yes, they probably will. Photograph: Noah K Murray/USA Today Sports
The Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are expected to be awful and will likely have the worst record in the NBA. So where does the disappointment come in, you ask? Its because the franchise and their fans will get almost nothing out of suffering through this season. Thanks to the Paul Pierce-Kevin Garnett trade with the Celtics in 2013, Boston has the right to swap their first-round pick with Brooklyns in the 2017 draft. So the Nets are going to lose most of their games AND lose out on the opportunity to bring in a franchise savior. Lets hope that 2014 trip to the Eastern Conference semis was worth it. DG
New Orleans tumbled last year, but really should be a better team than their record showed. They have the talent to be a playoff team just as they were two seasons ago but it seems like the mix still isnt there in a deep Western Conference. LC
The Chicago Bulls are going to drop off despite the addition-by-subtraction of losing Derrick Rose and bringing in a motivated Dwyane Wade. The pieces wont fit. HF
Having offloaded injury-prone Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah, the Chicago Bulls snubbed a refresh and a chance to hand the reins to Jimmy Butler. Instead it signed Rajon Rondo and Dwyane Wade, who have beef going back to the Celtics-Heat wars and will both want the limelight. On the Chicago sports scale, the Bulls will be far more Bears than Cubs. CS
LeBron James is
Durable. James has now played 1,186 NBA games in his career between the regular season and playoffs. Thats already 77 more than Michael Jordan logged in his career (not including his two forgettable seasons in a Wizards jersey). Theres a lot of mileage on LeBrons legs, but other than a slight reduction in minutes from his early twenties, there are no signs of slowing down. We are all witnesses to a man who has only aged along his hairline. DG
Not going to be able to pull the Cavs over the Warriors this time. LC
Already, at the very least, the second greatest basketball player who has ever lived. And hes not close to finished. HF
The man. Regardless of who performs miracles during regular season play, can we please refrain from proclaiming Curry or Westbrook or Durant has usurped him as the games best player? They wont have. Games 5-7 of the Finals where it James played-out the longest con in the history of sports – put that debate to bed until the post-season. CS
Steph Curry is
Now a full-on villain. If Kevin Durant is a bad guy for joining Golden State, Curry looks even worse for needing another superstar to get back on top. A fresh-faced NBA superstar everyone was rooting for two years ago today is today the face of a team many want to see crash and burn. Every behind-the-back pass Curry chucks out of bounds this season will be a moment of viral glee. DG
A player too unselfish for his own good. His need to please others sometimes destroys his focus. LC
The most embattled reigning MVP for two years running in NBA history, or at least among those whove won a ring. HF
A man with something to prove once again. Although an ill-timed knee injury may be mitigating, the undisputed league MVP had a Finals series to forget. LeBron made him look like a pretender again, now well see what Currys really made of. CS
One change to improve the NBA …
This will never happen because it would be a significant change to the entire sport of basketball but, hey, if the floor is mine: get rid of the free throw and penalize players who commit a foul by removing them from the floor for 30 seconds, hockey-style. This ends the awful free throw-fests that mar the end of so many basketball games and we also get some fun 5-on-4 action. I await your call, Adam Silver. DG
Revive the draft lottery reform that owners rejected two years ago that would havegiven all seven of the worst teams a better shot at the No1 pick thus reducing the incentive to tank. LC
Theres no reason that the NBA season should be 82 games long other than money. Unfortunately, thats more than reason enough for owners to continue with it. HF
Two free throws plus the ball if deliberate Hack-A fouls are committed more than three times a game on poor FT shooters like DeAndre Jordan and Dwight Howard. Theres no channel-turner in basketball like a Hackathon. CS
One bold prediction …
Joel Embiid will win rookie of the year. Picking a 7ft 0in center who can do this and this might not seem incredibly bold, but injuries have kept Embiid from playing in a single NBA game since he was drafted No3 overall in 2014. Predicting he stays healthy and plays well and that something good happens for the Sixers is as bold as bold can be. DG
Luke Waltons Lakers will have surpassed his entire 2015-16 loss total (four) by the time they face the Warriors for the first time (in their sixth game). LC
LeBron James will have a tough time leading the Cavaliers to another title. Photograph: Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP
Im going to keep predicting that the Minnesota Timberwolves to end the season over .500 every single season until it actually happens. HF
Miamis resigned center Hassan Whiteside will win Defensive Player of the Year. The $98 million man, who finished third in voting last season becomes the focal point of a Heat team minus superstars. If pre-season is anything to go by, he looks ready for the responsibility. Hes also a triple double machine in the making and, as he likes to say; aint nobody doin it with blocks either. CS
Which rookie will impress the most?
When Ben Simmons returns from injury – hopefully by mid-season – hell quickly add footage to his passing highlight reel. (And many of those passes will go to Embiid, my bold Rookie of the Year pick. Hey, great choice!) DG
Kris Dunn, the Timberwolves point guard from Providence, looked fantastic in the Summer League and might be the most polished rookie in the league. LC
If Joel Embiid, who finally will be making his NBA debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, counts as a rookie, then it will be him. The 76ers will still be awful, though. HF
With Ben Simmons out until January, this is more open. Bostons Jaylen Brown drafted third out of Berkeley will have plenty of opportunities to shine in a big market team thats primed to contend. While the short forward might struggle for ROTY-worthy minutes/numbers behind Jae Crowder, he could be the most impressive. CS
Wholl win the MVP award?
Russell Westbrooks consolation prize in losing Kevin Durant might just be the MVP. If he can keep the Thunder above .500 and reach the playoffs, hell win the award and he surely wont thank Kevin Durant or Kevin Durants mother. DG
While I would be tempted to pick Russell Westbrook who could run free to as many points as he wants in the Thunders offense, the smart pick here is LeBron James. LC
Russell Westbrook. If he remains healthy, the Oklahoma City Thunder point guard is going to have a monster year now that he doesnt have to share his the ball with Durant. HF
Steph Curry will split the limelight with Kevin Durant, while LeBron James saves his absolute best for the postseason and hasnt won the award since 2013. Russell Westbrooks numbers will explode without Durant and theres a legit chance he can smash last years tally of 18 triple doubles. CS
Atlantic winner
Toronto Raptors. DG
Boston Celtics. LC
Boston Celtics. HF
Im going with the Cs. CS
Central winner
Cleveland Cavaliers. DG
Cleveland. LC
Cleveland Cavaliers. HF
The Cavs will take this. CS
Southeast winner
Atlanta Hawks. DG
Atlanta Hawks. LC
Orlando Magic. HF
Close. Atlanta is the favourite, but Charlotte or Washington could easily take this one. CS
Northwest winner
Portland Trail Blazers. DG
Utah Jazz. LC
Oklahoma City. HF
Utah and Portland look strong, but OKC will win it. CS
Pacific winner
Golden State Warriors. DG
Golden State Warriors. LC
Cant see anyone but Golden State. HF
Although last years regular season dominance could be beyond the Warriors, theyll win this division by at least 10 games. CS
Southwest winner
San Antonio Spurs. DG
San Antonio. LC
San Antonio. HF
Business as usual for the Spurs. CS
Eastern Conference Finals prediction
Cleveland over Indiana. DG
Cleveland over Boston. LC
Cleveland Cavaliers over literally any opponent they could face. Lets say the Boston Celtics. HF
A comfortable series for the Cavs, wholl win in five. CS
Western Conference Finals prediction
Golden State over LA Clippers. DG
Golden State over Utah. LC
Go for the Golden State Warriors over the San Antonio Spurs. HF
Warriors in seven in an all-time classic. CS
NBA championship winner
Everyone knows the classic scene in Gullivers Travels where the resting giant is overrun by tiny Lilliputians and secured to the ground by strings. Thats kind of how I see this NBA season. LeBron is the giant of the sport and no other player is close to matching him, but in adding Kevin Durant the Warriors now have enough to take down even the biggest star in all the game. Now I should probably note that Gulliver broke out of those strings in the story and that LeBron never rests. But Ill still give the Warriors 3-1 odds. DG
Last spring Golden State appeared certain to win their second-straight NBA title against Cleveland. But Draymond Green was suspended for a game, Steph Curry lost his focus and the Warriors were outplayed by the Cavs and LeBron James. They signed Kevin Durant to make sure that doesnt happen again. The same two teams are destined to meet once more but this time Golden State will have too many elite players to slump again. Expect a more locked-in Curry, a motivated Durant and enough contributions from Green and Klay Thompson to go the distance next June. LC
The Golden State Warriors, taking out the Cleveland Cavaliers. Yes, I know, this would be the third straight Warriors-Cavaliers finals, but its hard to imagine this season going any other way barring injuries that are too depressing to contemplate. The funniest possible result would be for the Cavaliers to take a 3-1 series lead this time around, only to lose to the Warriors. Call them the meme busters. HF
The Dubs will have learned a lot from last summers humbling loss to Cleveland and its all the motivation theyll need to put it right. Should the NBA Finals be a three-peat, Im picking Golden State to take a 2-1 lead over the Cavs in Finals match-ups. Warriors in six. CS

Hockey, weed and taxes? 11 Canadian stereotypes debunked
Canada is often pictured as a uniformly cold, multicultural, socialist paradise full of beer-swilling ice hockey fans. But a close look at the evidence reveals some very different truths good and bad about the Great White North
Its pretty easy to conjure an idea of a Canadian. As one young paramour looking to marry an American told a dating website: She must be willing to become a hockey fan and eat maple syrup and Beaver Tails in my igloo.
Theres more to the stereotype, of course. Canadas universal health care and gun-control legislation are frequently namechecked by American politicians (often disapprovingly), while the countrys adventurers have a long-standing tradition of stitching tiny Canadian flags into their backpacks.
But while some of these cliches are true Tim Hortons really does sell more of its hot brown drink (they call it coffee) than any other restaurant chain a deep dive into the actual statistics suggest that much of the countrys image is just that.
Some of the most common misconceptions about Canada include:
Canadas most popular sport by far is ice hockey
What football is to Brazil, hockey is Canada, right? Between them, the mens and womens national Canadian ice hockey teams won seven of a possible eight gold medals at the last four Winter Olympics.
But while Canadas superiority on the ice remains unchecked, the sport itself is becoming a little more niche at home. A 2014 study pegged ice hockey fourth among 3-to-17-year-old Canadians in participation numbers, behind swimming, soccer and dance. Its probably no coincidence that hockey was also ranked the second most expensive sport to play, and that multiculturalism means a generation of kids less uniformly passionate about pucks.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is catching up to Canada when it comes to playing the sport professionally: 2015 marked the first time in 98 years when Canadians did not make up the majority of National Hockey League players.
Canadians live in the wilderness
Pierre Berton once declared: A Canadian is somebody who knows how to make love in a canoe.
But there are a few problems with this all-Canadian adage, beyond the obvious issue of tipping. For one, Berton never actually said it. For another, the image of Canadians as a wilderness-dwelling people is not borne out by research: as of 2011, a full 81% of Canadians resided in a population centre, census speak for urban area.
In fact, about 35.2%, or one in three Canadians, lives in either Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver alone.
And if you think the vast majority Canadas city-dwellers love nothing more than to race to the countryside, youd also be wrong: a 2010 poll found that only 23% of Canadians see their ideal vacation as a visit to a cottage or a lake.
Canadians are taxed to death
The status of Canada as something of a socialist darling leads many to assume that Canadians pay income tax rates at similar levels to those in, for example, France or Germany.
Not so, according to the OECDs annual Taxing Wages report. The report ranks Canada 25th out of 34 countries in terms of its tax wedge for single-income earners (a measure of the difference between labour costs to the employer and the corresponding net take-home pay of the employee). By this metric,, Canada is actually slightly below the US.
In the same report, Canada ranked 14th out of 34 in terms of income tax, based on the average national wage. When it comes to corporate taxes, too, Canada is relatively generous the headline corporate tax rate has dropped from 34% in 2007 to 26.5% in 2015, ranking Canada 61st in the world. By comparison, the US ranks fourth.
Canadians are obsessed with beer
There are few images more Canadian than beloved SCTV hosers Bob and Doug McKenzie sitting on a couch and cracking open a few bottles of Molson Canadian while complaining about US-style twist-off caps. The Beer Hunter, an all-Canadian take on Russian Roulette, has long been the nations greatest drinking game.
But while it is true that Canadians love beer they spent C$15.7bn on the stuff in 2011 an increasing number are embracing wine as their drink of choice. As a 2015 report notes, Beer sales as a share of the total sale of alcoholic beverages have been declining for several years.
In 2004/2005, the report continued, beer had a market share of 49% in terms of dollar value, while wine had a market share of 25%. By 2013/2014, the market share for beer had declined to 42%, while wine was up to 31%.
Canada is a haven for pot smokers
Since snowboarder Ross Rebagliati went on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1998 to celebrate the return of his Olympic gold medal after it had been stripped from him because of THC in his blood, Canada has garnered a reputation as weed-smoking haven. The 2001 ruling of an Ontario court that prohibiting the medical use of marijuana was unconstitutional did little to shake that impression.
But although Justin Trudeaus Liberal government promised to table legislation to legalise marijuana in 2017, Canadas medical community and popular opinion are divided on the question, and there are diplomatic hurdles still to clear. Even if weed is eventually made legal, it will likely be sold in set quantities, possibly from government stores, and subject to significant taxes. In fact, the North American nation that has made the biggest strides in legalising pot has been the supposedly drug-averse US.
Canadian hospital wait times are so bad they flee to the US for care
During the 9 October presidential debate, Donald Trump raised some ire north of the border when he referred to Canadian healthcare as catastrophic. Said the now-president-elect: Youve noticed the Canadians. When they need a big operation, they come into the US in many cases, because their system is so slow.
As ever, Trump is manipulating the truth. Canadians do endure long wait times for specialised treatment, and as of 2014 Canada ranked last among 11 OECD countries in terms of how quickly patients can get an appointment with their family doctor.
However, Canadians arent flocking en masse to the US in response. A Fraser Institute report revealed that in 2015 just 1% of Canadians who needed specialised medical treatment sought that treatment in the US.
Canada is a major exporter of comedy stars
Dan Aykroyd, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine OHara, Lorne Michaels, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Dave Foley. All are Canadians who made it big in America and all are over 50. Whereas comedians were once regularly discovered on shows such as Saturday Night Live, SCTV and Kids in the Hall, the well has been drying up: the success of Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and Ryan Reynolds is heartening, but Canada is no longer the comedy source it once was.
Though tightened screening at the US border may be partly to blame, the changing way in which we consume comedy bite-sized clips shared online, from acts such as Picnicface and Baronness Von Sketch Show also plays a role. The old model of a breakout US/Canadian TV sketch comedy may no longer exist, says Toronto Second Citys Etan Muskat: The CBC is trying to have breakout mainstream comedic success, following a model that doesnt compute.
Canada is a frigid wasteland
Canada is cold, eh? It has an average daily temperature of -5.6C, making it one of the chilliest countries on earth. But the idea of an average Canadian daily temperature is meaningless. Not only does it combine cities like Regina and St Johns thousands of miles apart, in entirely different climates but it doesnt capture range.
Canadas summer highs are in fact often equal to, or higher than, other major cities in Europe and the US. Winnipeg, for example, which suffers average annual winter highs of -12.7, has a summer average high of 25.8, higher than Paris and Los Angeles.
Canada also has a rich summer culture of cabin or cottage-going to rival the Scandinavians and the dacha-loving Russians. If anything, the brutal winters make Canadians appreciate the summer months more.
Canadas economy is driven by natural resources
Though Canada is the biggest exporter of crude oil to the US and the highest exporter of forestry products relative to imports, the forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil and gas industries collectively employ only 355,000 Canadians, or 2% of the workforce.
In fact, Canadas services sector dwarfs the goods-producing sector by almost four to one. And the third-biggest service employer after retail and healthcare/social services is professional, scientific and technical services, including tech startups like Shopify, Hootsuite and Freshbooks. In 2015, Canadas tech companies produced $117bn or 7.1% of Canadas economic output, greater than that of the finance and insurance industry. As Mike McDerment, CEO of Freshbooks, notes: Its our observation that the economy is being restructured away from resource economy to services and tech.
Canada is a Scandinavian-style social democracy
Though Canada enjoys a strong healthcare system and is consistently ranked among the most livable countries on earth, many assume it is a thriving social democracy in the style of Sweden or Denmark. Not exactly.
Canadian bachelors students pay the joint 2nd highest tuition fees of OECD countries, alongside Japanese and Korean students. Canada also has the 7th highest child poverty rate in the OECD, and, as of 2013, was last in spending on early childhood education and is among the most expensive countries on earth when it comes to childcare costs.
Meanwhile Canadas rich-poor gap is slightly bigger than the OECD average, and the World Economic Forum put Canada in 30th place globally two spots below the US in gender equality measures.
Canada is diverse from coast to coast
The Economist recently pointed out that Canada is a world leader in immigration, both in acceptance and integration, a result of 1971 legislation enshrining multiculturalism. However, most of the resulting diversity is limited to Canadas big cities. Of Canadas 6.8 millions immigrants in 2011, 91% lived in one of Canadas 33 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver compared with 63.3% of people who were born in Canada.
Across the country, skilled immigrants struggle with significant barriers to finding work, such as language and requirements for Canadian experience. In Vancouver and Toronto, many immigrants are increasingly living in inner suburban enclaves, with less access to public transport. At least one geographer, Zach Taylor, argues the isolation and resentment these enclaves can cause helped fuel the populist rise of Toronto mayor Rob Ford.

The giant-killing FA Cup is no longer such a football fairytale | Matthew Engel
Football loves a fairytale especially if it involves an underdog and the FA Cup. But the reality is rather murkier
In an ever-changing game in an ever-changing world, there is something wonderfully reassuring about the FA Cup. Even its language has a quasi-liturgical permanence. Every year the football writers tell us about the romance and magic of the cup, which is a great leveller. Feats of giant-killing are performed against goliaths by minnows, a word first identified by The Guardian as a cliche in 1961. (Quite how minnows are meant to do this is unclear; food poisoning, presumably.)
And these ritual incantations have had a fine old workout these past few weeks, even before minnows Lincoln beat goliaths Burnley to become the first non-league team since 1914 to reach the tournaments last eight. Whatever happens next, the 9,000 Lincoln supporters allotted tickets for the next game at Arsenal on 11 March will have a splendid day out. Beating Arsenal? That would be a fairytale.
But these lower-division successes, like once-a-century storms and floods, are now getting more frequent. Already this decade, Bradford City have reached the final of the League Cup and the last eight of the FA Cup. Four years ago, Luton, then also outside the league, knocked Norwich out of the Premier League.
It would be good simply to celebrate the joy of all this. But just as unusually early daffodils can be simultaneously delightful while portending uncomfortable truths about climate change, these unexpected results also say something much less fairytale-ish about football.
This seasons other over-achievers, Sutton United, whose own FA Cup run was ended by Arsenal last Monday, immediately found themselves immersed in a scandalette when their reserve goalkeeper 20-stone Wayne Shaw, AKA the roly-poly goalie, ostentatiously ate a pie on the subs bench during the Arsenal match.
Shaw had previously been in line for elevation to temporary status as a national treasure, or at least a listed building. However, the pie-eating appeared to be connected to a bet offered by a firm called Sun Bets a company itself connected to a well-known newspaper that is not averse to stunts. These novelty bets are not part of mainstream bookmaking, but are funded by the marketing departments. Shaw has now left Sutton, and multiple investigations are under way. Fifteen minutes of fame should always be handled with care.
When analysing the shock results themselves, one also has to follow the money. Sutton got to the last 16 by beating Leeds, who put out their second team. Leedss priority this season is to climb back on to the Premier League gravy train after 13 years absence; the FA Cup was a much less lucrative distraction. The exits of Liverpool, Newcastle and Brighton all have similar explanations.
Wayne Shaw eats a pie on the touchline. Photograph: BBC
The football historian David Goldblatt remembers Billy Bremner, the great Leeds terrier of the 60s and 70s, saying that if he had not won the FA Cup his career would have been incomplete. You couldnt imagine anyone saying that now with any degree of earnestness. The top players think of it as a bit of an afterthought. The financial differences are so stark compared to the League, theres no comparison.
This can also be seen as a product of English footballs globalisation. Whereas every homegrown, jumpers-for-goalposts kid used to fantasise above all about climbing the steps and lifting the Cup, this has far less resonance abroad, where the Premier League is everything. The cup has never meant anything like as much in other footballing countries, says Goldblatt. In Italy, its hardly taken seriously at all.
Foreign players and fans are not steeped in the mystique, and cup final day no longer clears the shopping centres the way it once did. Only the BBC, clinging desperately to one of the last baubles in its denuded sporting treasury, still hypes it all up as though it was 1973.
English football is also more mobile than it once was. Clubs can now rise and, above all, fall, like characters in a Dickens novel. Goliaths are turned into minnows, and sometimes vice versa, depending primarily on the ownership. It matters not whether the self-appointed saviour, jetting in to proclaim undying devotion to a team he has only just been told about, is a money-launderer, a property speculator or an egomaniac. The question, which only gets answered with time, is whether he plans to inject money or extract it. Disaster is a constant threat ask any Leeds supporter.
Luton were once above Norwich in the pecking order. In 1960, Burnley were champions of England. In 1987, they were not just languishing in the depths of the old fourth division, but had to win their final match to stay in the league at all. They did win, and the team they sent down instead was Lincoln. Now they are big-time again. So the whole notion of giant-killing has become muddied.
Burnley were trying harder than most last week. Seemingly safe from relegation, but with no higher ambitions, the FA Cup might have been up their street. But even if Lincoln do go on and win the final an outcome more improbable even than Leicester becoming champions there will still be an underlying sense that fairytales are not what they were. (And on this weeks evidence, their manager, Danny Cowley, will have to watch his back.).
The greatest of them all happened in 1972: Hereford United of the southern league v Newcastle, not with their reserves but at full power, complete with Malcolm Macdonald, the Wayne Rooney of his day. It was Hereford 2, Newcastle 1, after much drama (the match even has its own Wikipedia page). Journalist and Hereford fan Tom Knight was on the terraces as a 16-year-old that day. Nothing really ever happened in Hereford, he recalls now. Then we thought we were suddenly part of the world, the world where things happen.
Four decades later, Hereford went bust after falling into the hands of sugar daddies who turned sour. Last season, the successor club were in a league so low they were playing villages: not just minnows, but plankton. They are slowly climbing again. Well-intentioned benefactors welcome.

President of the season
Palermos 74-year-old owner Maurizio Zamparini entered 2016 searching to place his coach-eater image to sleep. Heres the way it unfolded:
10 Jan: Zamparini denies hes already feeling twitchy about his new coach Davide Ballardini. I won’t sack him, despite the fact that I possibly could. 11 Jan: Sacks him and hires Guillermo Barros Schelotto. 11 February:Finds out Schelotto hasn’t got his badges and hires Giovanni Bosi rather. 15 February: Sacks Bosi and rehires Giuseppe Iachini, who he sacked in November. 8 Marly:Calls Iachini a fool that has gone mad and replaces him with Walter Novellino. 12 Apr:Sacks Novellino, rehires Ballardini. People say Ive gone mad, but Im the victim here. 6 Sep: Hires Roberto de Zerbi after Ballardini resigns two games in to the season. 28 November:Denies he already has his doubts about De Zerbi. I’ll keep him. That’s my decision. 30 November: Sacks De Zerbi to be pitiful and hires Eugenio Corini to determine out a hard year. Why Corini? There wasnt much on the market.
Most British moment
In April West Indies needed an unlikely 19 in the final to win the planet T20 and Englands Ben Stokes was the person using the ball in the hands to shut the result. Four balls and 4 Carlos Brathwaite sixes later, it had been over. I send Ben commiserations, stated Brathwaite. Hes a complete legend.
Most unpredicted hero
Marcus Willbomb Willis, world No775 as he stunned Wimbledon and, almost, Roger Federer sticking it to trolls who dubbed him Cartman because of his big bones. His Wimbledon run ended having a cheque for 30,000. It is the greatest pay day Ive ever endured. I’m able to repay a few charge cards now.

RIP Wii U: Nintendo’s glorious, quirky failure
Nintendo has ceased production of Wii U less than five years after its launch. What went wrong, and what will be its legacy?
In late January it was announced that Nintendo had ceased production of the Wii U console. The follow-up machine to the hugely successful Wii had sold fewer than 15m units worldwide since its launch in 2012. PlayStation 4 sold more in a year. Wii sold more than 100m in its lifetime.
What happened? How did Nintendo, one of the oldest and most respected companies in the video game industry, get it so wrong? And did anything good come out of the Wii U era? How will the machine be remembered, if at all?
Certainly, some believe the console was cursed from the start right from the first announcement at the 2011 E3 video game conference in Los Angeles. Before that, Nintendo had made vague references to Project Cafe, a new piece of hardware deep in development at the companys famed R&D labs, but the nature of the device was unclear. The E3 presentation was supposed to be the big reveal.
Then, there it was at the Nintendo press conference, in front of the whole games industry. Wii U. Reggie-Fils-Aim, head of Nintendo America, gave an obtuse introduction and showed the unique GamePad controller, with its built-in display. After this, came a showreel of gaming moments, then nothing. The crowd whooped, but when the lights went down, a few expressed confusion: was the Wii U GamePad an extension to the original Wii? Was it an entirely new console? That evening, in an interview with the Evening Standard, the late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated: Because we put so much emphasis on the controller, there appeared to be some misunderstanding.
The PS4 and Xbox One, high-powered machines arrived and changed the gaming landscape. Composite: Xbox One S v PS 4 Pro v PS4 Slim v Project Scorpio
A masterpiece of understatement. In some ways, that misunderstanding never went away. Even when it became clear that Wii U was a whole new console, with a unique motion-sensitive screen pad, consumers were nonplussed. There had been rumours that, with its custom AMD 7 series graphics chipset and IBM multicore central processor, the machine would be more powerful than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 especially as it was arriving years after those machines debuted. But before the launch, developers were already whispering to news sources that this was not the case driving the second-screen would eat up the graphics processing power and the CPU wasnt that special. It was all academic anyway: barely a year later, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arrived to completely change the technological landscape.
But Nintendo wasnt competing with PlayStation and Xbox, and never really had. Instead, it needed to convert the tens of millions of Wii owners whod rarely bought consoles before; whod been seduced by the Wii Remote controller and the immediate, social experience it promised. Those people were now quietly migrating to other platforms: smartphones, tablets, set-top boxes … Thats who the Wii U was aimed at.
In the months following E3, it was at least picking up interest from the development community. I had done work on the N64, Gameboy, GameCube and Wii and I still maintain they were my favourite systems to work on, so when the WiiU was announced it had me excited, says Byron Atkinson-Jones of Xiotex Studios I wanted to see how far we could go in game design terms with the two screen setup. Were we going to get new game paradigms like we did with the Wii and its controllers?
However, even before the launch, the games media was complaining about a lack of compelling first-party content. The machine would arrive with only two major Nintendo titles, the mini-game collection Nintendo Land, and New Super Mario Bros U, a decent side-scrolling platformer, but by no means a major Mario title with with little involvement from Miyamoto. There were intriguing moments: Nintendo Land has the clever asymmetrical multiplayer action of Luigis Ghost Mansion and the boisterous arena-battler Animal Crossing: Sweet Day. But there was also nothing as immediately compelling as Wii Sports or Wii Play nothing that completely crystallised the idea of the GamePad.
Veteran developer Rhodri Broadbent once worked for Q-Games in Japan, and met Shigeru Miyamoto while making Star Fox Command. He felt there should still have been a role for the Wii Remote in the new era. The fact that Wii U did not come bundled with a Wii Remote was really disappointing to me, he says. I felt that the identity of the Wii Remote was worth continuing, and that combining the jump to HD visuals with the jump to HD motion control of the Wii Remote Plus would have been a smart play. In terms of marketing, the Wii Remote was iconic from the get-go, whereas the GamePad sadly didnt really get to find its identity in either software, nor marketing. There were some truly excellent, best-in-class games released for Wii U, but very few of them gave life or character to the GamePad.

The GamePad, as a unique selling point, was also a unique curse, an albatross around the neck of the whole project. Designers struggled over its multifaceted nature: should they support it as a standalone screen, a second-screen for the TV, or as a device to allow asymmetrical multiplayer experiences (the player with the GamePad is able to have a different experiences to others using Wii Remotes). It was a tough business proposition too. Games publishers like to be able to transition their projects freely between different machines most modern game engines are platform agnostic making this process easier. But Wii Us controller demanded a different approach, so including the console on multiplatform projects was complicated and expensive even if they were just going to use the GamePad as a mini-map, which many did.
Of the third-party games available at launch, most were quick conversions of familiar PlayStation and Xbox titles: Call of Duty, Batman, Fifa… few of these exploited the GamePad feature-set in truly innovative ways. The best was perhaps ZombiU, a fascinating survival horror title with a neat permadeath mechanic, set in a post-apocalyptic London that made inspired use of the GamePad as both an environment scanner and a cellphone. With its tense, gory action, it also brilliantly subverted expectations of a Nintendo launch title. But it wasnt enough.
The problem is, mainstream game development is all about confidence. Console manufacturers have to be certain that third-party publishers will support the device; third-party publishers have to be sure that consumers will buy it, and draw confidence from first-party titles; and consumers wont commit until they know there will be great titles from both first- and third-party studios. Its a vicious circle of reliance, and it often all depends on that launch week. Nintendo just didnt come up with the goods to inspire consumers, and because of this, the likes of Activision, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft were all backing off right from the outset.
Meanwhile, Nintendo was trying to make things easier for independent developers, noticing the huge influx of excellent indie titles on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. After the success of the 3DS eShop in attracting experimental games, the company set out to improve its digital store for the home console experience. However, its legacy was not good. On the Wii, support for smaller studios was patchy: the submissions process was, according to some studios, extremely lengthy, and there were sales thresholds that made it risky to commit to offbeat projects. Even after these problems had been addressed, Wii U had no support for the important multi-platform games engine Unity until much later in the consoles lifespan, strangling its potential with the indie community.
[The Wii U dev kit] was clunky and far more difficult to setup than its predecessors, says Atkinson-Jones. I remember opening the box it came in and there was a warning saying it was very easy to brick the machine so getting it setup was a terrifying prospect. Id love to say I got further than this but the reality is that even though Nintendo had signed So Hungry to appear on WiiU, Unity would not actually be ready for another year its because of this my other game Blast Em! came about and thankfully that game has kept my studio running. Once you got past all the problems of setup and getting a working build of Unity, it was just that much harder than doing any kind of cross platform work – the big difference being the two displays of course.

So the Wii U had a lot to contend with: a poorly conceived debut, a unique selling point that was difficult to describe, and a hesitant development community unwilling to commit resources to a quirky machine. But it did provide moments of genuine brilliance. The defining first-party titles Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Splatoon and Pikmin 3 may not have been top tier Nintendo originals (theres no Miyamoto Mario, no new Zelda), but they were excellent games, filled with interesting ideas and classic moments of design genius.
Pikmin 3 is one of the greatest games I have ever played on any system, says Broadbent. Its mission mode is so tightly balanced, with so many tricks and techniques to optimise battles, find new routes and shave seconds off your time that I can and often did replay the same mission for entire days without noticing that the my weekend had disappeared. Im a big fan of the oft-overlooked, but to my mind never bettered, New Super Mario Bros U, especially the challenge modes. And keeping with Mario, Super Mario Makers musical, whimsical user interface is a masterclass in hiding complexity and infusing character into menus the way the sound effects harmonise with the background music as you place objects on the screen is endlessly charming to me.
There were beautiful third-party games too, sparsely spread out though the machines lifespan perhaps, but certainly there. Cult Japanese studio PlatinumGames, best known for its demanding brawlers, was an unexpected hero producing two masterpieces for the machine: the extravagant Bayonetta 2, and the kookie super hero puzzler, Wonderful 101. Warner Bros brought us the excellent Armored edition of Batman Arkham City, but also the ludicrously overlooked Lego City Undercover, a hilarious Grand Theft Auto pastiche, which is now rightfully being remade for current consoles.
More importantly however, there were indie developers who truly embraced the idiosyncracies of the system and its development environment. We enjoy letting the quirks of specific hardware inspire new ideas and features here, so from a design point of view, Wii U was a lot of fun, says Broadbent. Gyros, a camera, a touch screen there was a lot there to use. For Scram Kitty, I had the idea of making the titular cat appear as a sort of sports commentator on the TV while the player focused on the GamePad action, and although in the end that element didnt turn out to be an essential feature of the game, it was a great source of personality for the game, and one which kept throwing up new ideas throughout development.
Highlights included DrinkBox Studios crazed platformer Guacamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition, the lovely retro platformer Shantae and the Pirates Curse, and the intriguing puzzler Art of Balance. Most were multiplatform, but lots used the Wii U capabilities in interesting ways. A key example was the engrossing Affordable Space Adventures from Danish developer KnapNok Games. In this interstellar puzzle game, the GamePad was used to monitor and interact with your crafts primary systems, including engines, anti-gravity controls and scanner, providing a great Star Trek bridge experience.
There were also thoughtful conversions of iOS titles, including Dakko Dakkos translation of the spooky narrative adventure Year Walk. We took a much more all-in approach to the machines feature set, combining the gyros, touch screen, separate displays, and even subtly altering the audio between the gamepad and the TV, to create very satisfying controls and puzzles, says Broadbent. The end result feels uniquely suited to Wii U.
Its also worth remembering Nintendos unique attempts to create friendly online communities around the Wii U. The Miiverse is a family-friendly social network in which players can chat about what theyre playing, draw and share pictures, and seek gaming advice, all within a safe, charming environment populated with customised Mii characters. It was a much more warm, human approach to networked play than Xbox Live or PlayStation Network and, as Jennifer Schneidereit, co-creator of luscious historical adventure Tengami discovered, it allowed unique relationships between developers and players:
It was possible to post to Tengamis Miiverse from within the game, to show level progress or ask other players for help, she says. As a developer I was able to interact with people in Tengamis Miiverse and help with puzzles, answer their questions and listen to their feedback. Because Miiverse posts are not only textual, players can also hand draw and incorporate stamps, it was a real delight to watch players using our stamps to create artwork of their own.
Wii U had a difficult start, with a difficult idea in a difficult era. The E3 presentation blurred what the machine actually was, and the GamePad was never an easy proposition to market unlike the Wii Remote that people could see was fun, just from the adverts. Meanwhile, with Xbox and PlayStation continuing their graphics arms race, and competition coming in from smartphones and tablets, the gaming audience seemed to be stratifying into two groups: the sorts of players who bought consoles and high-end PCs, and the sorts whod quite as happily play Candy Crush Saga for free on their phones. The idea of a console as the central focus of a party or family event, which had peaked between 2005 and 2010 with both the Wii and the rise of music games like Guitar Hero, had drifted out of favour.

Now here comes the Nintendo Switch, a regeneration of the Wii U concept where the GamePad effectively becomes the console, with its own built-in controllers. If anything, it is a more flagrant attempt to seduce casual players away from their phones, while tapping into the family living-room appeal of the original Wii. Broadbent sees Switch as a reconnection with that machine: Im very happy that the joy-cons have so many little tricks in them, and encouraged to see games like ARMS push forward higher-fidelity motion controls right out the gate. But Im mostly happy that Switchs identity as a home console thats not tied to your TV is being communicated so clearly.
Communication, it seems, is key. The Wii did its own communicating: you just watched people playing Tennis or Bowling and you knew it was fun. Nothing Nintendo has done with its hardware since then has been quite so alluring. But to write off Wii U as a creative failure would be a gross disservice. The GamePad actualised a lot of vague entertainment industry hype about the second screen, and lots of games truly illustrated the magic of the concept. And lets not forget that Wii U also saw Nintendos entry into the toys to life market with its Amiibo characters little figurines that could be placed on the screen to interact with games. They sold over 40m of those.
In years to come, people will pick up the console second-hand, with a few games Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8 and theyll realise what it was that Nintendo had in mind, theyll understand the appeal of the hardware. Much too late, of course.
