Nini, Dan Heng imbibitor lunae with sensitive ears that get all red if you simply whisper into them hehe
Oh god yes, ugh, Dan heng is so cute like I want to go to Disney land with him (oddly specific but yea)
Dom!reader x sub!Dan heng (This is, sfw? It has a lot of teasing and… ehe)
Tumblr media
It was a coincidence that you found out Dan heng’s ears were a tad more sensitive in his dragon form. You always liked to sneak up at him and whisper into his ear from behind, like, “good morning~” or, “boo.” Just to see if he would be startled. This habit of yours didn’t change even when he’s taking another form.
Which is exactly what happened today. The boy was in his room, his bluish horns making him look taller than usual. It seems like he was studying this shape he doesn’t usually take. As you’d always do, you carefully got closer to him, hoping that he hasn’t noticed you yet and whispered, “what are you doing?” His shoulders tensed up and his ears twitched. This was a new response, even if you managed to shock him he’d always keep a serious look. Since he always had a cold demeanour so seeing him so expressive was something rare.
The male turned around with a flustered face, his long elves akin ears got redder. Or was it your imagination? No, you could swear they weren’t this red before. “Y/n, you again..” he sighed, finally calming down from the surprise. “That was a nice reaction, ah, are you blushing?” You remarked. Dan heng frowned a little at your words, “no, I’m not.” Suddenly you got closer again, it was too close for his preferences so he took a few steps back. Whenever he did that, you’d also take a few steps forward again to close the distance.
Until his back hit the wall, and you got him trapped between your arms. “This is not funny, y/n.” That’s what he said, but you were grinning as if you won the lottery. Maybe you did, this discovery, if it proves to be truth, would be worth more than any lottery. “I want to confirm something! Can I?” You asked him, to which he replied, “make it quick.”
Your hands cupped his face and let him rest his chin in the crook of your neck, his hands hold you tightly as if he was going to fall otherwise. After you took a deep breath, you blew some warm air against his ears. He instantly tensed up again, shoulders raised high up as to prevent you from touching that sensitive area. What an adorable thing, you couldn’t help but smile at him. Then you muttered as quietly as you could, “it seems your ears have gotten a little more sensitive? Do you like this, my dear?”
His heart was beating out of his chest. It was a feeling he didn’t even know existed that ran through his veins. He couldn’t pinpoint what he felt, but he knew it was making him turn into a mess. “I don’t know..” dan heng said, he doesn’t even know if he was being truthful with himself right now. Poor boy, he was so scared that you’d hear his heart, pounding inside his chest like he just ran a marathon. Before he could compose himself, you mumbled again, “won’t you answer me, pretty boy?”
That was the last straw, he felt his heart sink as soon as your voice echoed through his mind. The vibrations of your breath and voice tickled his ear, it was making him feel dizzy. So much, that his knees had gone weak. He couldn’t feel the strength in his fingertips anymore, and collapsed against you. How embarrassing this was, why was he getting so worked up over nothing? You only smiled at him, a gentle and soft expression on your face. It was a disguise though, it was hiding something much less innocent behind it. Your hands stopped cupping his face and instead wrapped around his waist, then you whispered again, “let’s see what else got more sensitive.”

puppy love ⌦ .。.:*♡
mingyu x reader x scoups? (Still figuring it out LOL)
pt. 2
—————————⌦
Tumblr media
—————————⌦
summary: first year of college, you literally knew no one and you planned for it to stay that way but damn were you wrong
notes: part 2!!! I hope y’all like this, I read back on pt 1 and realized I made some grammar errors and it was lowkey just ass in general…So I hope part 2 is a lot more enjoyable as I put a little more thought into it ! 💕
genre: seventeen college au, love triangle between scoups and Mingyu, Mingyu being on a football team, financial major scoups, angst??, fluff, cute friend ships, Hoshi, Joshua, Seungkwan, Minghao, and Wonwoo r your besties, Also besties with Yunjin (Le Sserafim) and Minnie (G-IDLE), other seventeen members are mentioned?? Childhood friends, cursing, drinking
————————————————————————
"its been awhile" the man chuckles. Choi Seungcheol. You're first every friend. You had met him on the first day of 2nd grade and had stayed friends till middle school until he moved away. You tried looking up his name on insta but nothing every came up, So you just gave up in finding him. "This is crazy" you let out an airy laugh "its been like what, 10 years?" Seungcheol asks, taking a seat next to you "Yea maybe" you felt awkward but so relieved at the same time, it really was nice seeing him after so long "sooo how do you to know each other again? Soonyoung ask "Childhood friends" Seungcheol responds, taking a bite from one of appetizers that were brought up "Wahh~ what a coincidence" Seungkwan says in awe and you both nod "Are you folks ready to order?" the waitress comes around "Yeah I think so?" Wonwoo tells the waiter.
Everyone's food had arrived and we were all eating peacfully, talking about school drama and whatever. But you were defiantly talking to Seungcheol the most, I mean how couldn't you? You had just met your childhood best friend after 10 years. Your phone lights up on your lap and you see a text message from Joshua "Don't you think Mingyu's been awfully quiet" read the text from Joshua. You shot your head up from your phone to look up at Mingyu, who was across from you. He was in fact a lot quieter than he normally is and he even looked a little pissed? You look over at Joshua and he simply gives you a shrug "He looks mad, right?" you whisper to Joshua "He does..." Joshua whispers back. "Can i get these plates out of your way?" the waiter asks and Soonyoung and Wonwoo help collect the plates to hand them over to the waiter "I'll be back with the bill" the waiter smiles before vanishing into the swarm of people.
"That was good, right nini?" Seungcheol pats his stomach a bit and you giggle. Nini was a random nickname Seungcheol had given you when you were both about 7. The whole backstory behind it was that, Seungcheol could never get your name right, but he did remember you by one of you favorite snacks, called "NINI" and eventually, even after he learned and memorized your name, he still preferred calling you nini “Nicknames? Really?” Mingyu scoffs, stuffing in hands into the pockets of this jeans “What’s up with him today?” Seungcheol asks but no one has the answer “maybe he didn’t like his food” Soonyoung suggests. You all stop once you’ve reached the parking lot of the restaurant “We’ll go first, see you guys tomorrow” Soonyoung and Seungkwan both bid there goodbyes, then shortly after Wonwoo and Joshua also left for there dorms, leaving you, Seungcheol, and Mingyu by yourselves. “Do you have a ride nini?” Seungcheol asks you and you shake your head “There’s probably no Ubers around at this time, it’s like a 10 minute walk anyways” you state “I can-“ before Seungcheol can finish his sentence he’s interrupted by Mingyu “I can walk her back to her dorm, you can go home it’s late anyways” Mingyu finishes Seungcheol’s sentence. “Alright if you say so, I’ll text you later y/n” The man scoffs before turning his attention to you “get home safely” he waves goodbye and both you and Mingyu begin to walk towards your dorm.
“I didn’t know you were so close to coups” Mingyu says, so quietly you can barley hear him “I mean I guess we’re good friends” you shrug “ just good friends?” Mingyu says, he’s tone filled with sarcasm. “Yes, just good friends” you say, returning the sarcastic tone. There’s awkward silence but the silence doesn’t last very long “ let’s play 20 questions” Mingyu says suddenly, breaking the silence “So suddenly?” You chuckle but he ignores you “I’ll go first. Favorite artist right now?” He asks “Wave to Earth” “ok ok, now you go” “uhm I don’t know.. favoritee~ video game?” “Call of duty” “cool cool” “Why does coups call you nini?”. You were taken aback just a bit by his question, you thought it was just some stupid Q&A game Mingyu wanted to play to pass the time “he also had trouble memorizing my name, so he started calling me “Nini” because I was always eating those Nini snacks at school” you still answer his question. Mingyu nods but doesn’t seem very satisfied by your question “how long have you been playing football?” “5 years” “dam ok” “What do you like about coups?. Once again, Mingyu brings up Seungcheol and you just didn’t understand why, I mean you didn’t really mind but it was just werid. “Uhm he’s nice??? And he really thoughtful and pays attention when I talk and is just really sweet” you answer Mingyu’s werid question anyways and yet he still looks unsatisfied “Favorite class your taking?” “Photography.” “I didn’t expect that from you” you mumble and Mingyu nods “ a lot of people say that”. “Do you not think I’m nice?” Mingyu suddenly stops in his track and turns to you “what??” You turn and stop to face him “I mean you said you liked coups because he’s nice right?? So am I not nice??” You couldn’t tell if this kid was pulling at your leg or was being dead serious “I mean I barley know you” you stutter out “I mean you said you hadn’t seen him in 10 years! How do you know he hasn’t changed?” Mingyu lowers his head slightly, watching his feet as he kicks a few tiny pebbles lying on the floor “Mingyu. You realized YOU are the one that invited him, I think you would know if he wasn’t a good person” you continue walking up the side walk and Mingyu follows you “so what do you think of me?” Mingyu asks “not your turn, it’s my turn to ask questions” you correct him “why are you asking so many questions about Seungcheol?” You ask “I’m just curious” he shrugs “about what?” You try and ask but Mingyu stops you “Not your turn” he smirks and you just scoff at him. At this point you were both in front of your dorm building complex “Do you think I’m hot?” Oh my god this kid and his fucking questions were gonna be the end of you “I mean.. yeah” you simply state, slowly going up the stairs with Mingyu trailing behind you “Your skincare routine?” “Don’t got one” he shrugs. You give him a dirty look because you know dam well there ain’t not way his skin that clear without at least a cleanser. You know we’re standing in front of your door “go out with me.” Your mind went completely blank “what.” “You heard me”. You did in fact hear him but the words definitely were not processing “you said it yourself, you said I’m nice and hot so why don’t we go on a date?” You were trying your best to avoid eye contact but that man was making it basically impossible, staring right at you without even blinking “well I mean I don’t know” you try and push him away, realizing he was basically pining you up against the wall because of how close you two were “text me then.” He said, backing up just the slightest so you would breathe “ok. I’m going now. Goodnight get back safely” you quickly enter your apartment before even letting the poor boy respond “what the actual fuck..” you mumbled to yourself. “DING” you phone screen lights up and you see a text message from the one and only Mingyu “postist art museum, 3:30 tomorrow” reads the text he sent you with a wink emoji “this kid” you sigh. Though you though he was ridiculous you caught yourself smiling at his text message.
The blaring sound of you alarm pierced through the morning silence of your dorm. You let at a groan as you shifted around in your bed before grabbing your phone "2:01" read the time on your phone "SHIT" you immediately rise from your bed and rush towards the bathroom where you brush your teeth and wash your face. Even though your "Date" with Mingyu was at 3:30, you normally took 2 hours to get ready. As you rummaged through your closet, trying to settle on an outfit to wear, Minnie strolls in "You got a date?" Minnie smirks "Actually, yes I do" you dont bother to look up at Minnie but you have already pictured her shocked face "Damn really? Who?" Minnie leans on the door frame, getting comfortable as you begin to speak "Remember that guy that dropped me off when I was drunk?" You stop looking through your closet and take a seat on your bed "The super hot one?" Minnie asks and you nod "Well, last night he asked me out on a date and I dont even know what I was thinking but I said yes" You sigh, getting back up to continue looking for an outfit "When'd ya'll meet" Minnie asks "Soonyoung's party, so like almost a week ago?" You shrug "You just met this guy and your about to spend a whole day with him?" Minnie questions. I mean she was right, you'd only known this man for less than a week "He wouldn't hurt a fly, I think" You pull out a pair of washed jeans and throw them on the bed "Great! just dont let him kidnap you" Minnie says, sarcastically "Thanks for being such a protective roommate" You give her a fake smile before turning back to look for a top "When are you leaving?" Minnie asks picking up her phone "I wanna get out at 3:00 so id better hurry" you pull out a white square neckline top with a cute lace bow on the neckline "you got like 45 minutes you better hurry" Minnie taps at your door frame, signaling shes going back to her room "have funn!" she calls out "thanks!" You reply, wasting no time to quickly change, put your shoes on and run out of the house.
You do your makeup on the way there and you reach the art museum at exactly 3:30. As you walk off the bus, you almost immediately spotted Mingyu. He was sitting down on the staircase leading up to the museum with a small pink bouquet in his hands. He was wearing a button down loosely with a pair of grey washed jeans and a black leather jacket. You couldn't deny that man was fine, and looked even finer today, especially in that outfit. "Mingyu!" Mingyu shots his head up and looks around before finally locking eyes on your figure. He starts to stand up as you approach him "You look beautiful" He smiles, handing you the pink bouquet "Thank you, you looks nice as well" you take the flowers, examining them carefully "Just nice?" Mingyu cocks his eyebrow up and you scoff at his sarcasms "What did you want me to say?" you and Mingyu start to walk up the stairs, leading to the art museum "I dont know maybe, breath-taking? Ravishing? Stunning? Out of this world?" Mingyu shrugs, you roll your eyes in response "Thats too much" You chuckle.
You and Mingyu begin to walk around the art museum, admiring the art hanged along the walls. "You know, a lot of girls at campus would be jealous of you right now, Going on a date with Mr. Campus crush" Mingyu teases, his lips forming into a cheeky smirk "Dont let you ego get the best of you, Kim Mingyu" You teased back. As the two of you strolled through the museum, admiring the beautiful pieces of art on the wall, Mingyu unexpectedly shifted from his usual playful banter to a more serious note. With a curious glint in his eyes, he turned around to face you and asks "So, what exactly are you looking for in a guy?" The question catches you off guard in the mist of you admiring one of the paintings on the wall, and after a brief pause you begin to state some "Someone who's genuine, I guess? Who's nice, good sense of humor, respects himself and others, and can cook" Mingyu, with a sly smirk, retorted "So basically me?" His comment sent you into laughter, though you weren't necessarily laughing because you thought what he had said was funny, but to try and hide you face that had probably turned as bright as a tomato and heart that was going at 200 BPM. "Well," you replied, finally calming your heart beat down by the slightest bit "Maybe minus the cockiness" You chuckle.
As you and Mingyu continue to walk around, making small comments about some to the paintings on display, you had noticed that Mingyu's banter had changed once again to quite a tense one, almost like he was dying to ask you somthing "You and Coups. You two seem basically inseparable" He asks, his casual tone barely concealing an undercurrent of tension. Suprised by the sudden focus of you childhood friend once again, you nodded "Yeah, Seungcheol. We're close. Why?" Mingyu's gaze lingered on a painting, his questions become more pointed. "What makes him you like him so much? I mean, did you guys share secrets and stuff when you were little or was it just the usual camaraderie?" Mingyu's eyes glancing towards you but stay glued on the painting in front of the two of you "We had a crazy strong bond when we were little, shared a lot of memories. Why are you suddenly curious about him anyways? You were like this yesterday." Mingyu was the one who invited him, he probably knew Seungcheol better than you and longer than you, so you were confused at the mans sudden interrogation. Mingyu's respone was a vague shrug, which left you in an even more confused state "Wanna get out of here?" Mingyu slightly signals towards the door and you nod "Sure, I'm hungry anyways" You both start to walk towards the exit, Mingyu looking through his phone looking for a place to grab dinner at.
You guys walk down the street to a nearby Italian restaurant that Mingyu said he's been wanting to try "I'll trust you judgment" You laugh, walking into the restaurant. You two are seated and begin to pick up you conversation. As Mingyu took a sip from the glass of water left on the table for the two of you, he turns to you with a sudden hopeful gleam in his eyes, almost like a puppy. "You know, you should come to my football games. Its a blast, and I think I'd really love to have you there cheering for me." You chuckle, "Im not really a sports person. The only thing I'd cheer for is not spilling my popcorn all over the bleachers." He grinned, undeterred, "Come on, Its not about the game. Its about the experience. You might enjoy it, I mean who wouldnt if I'm playing in it" You raised an eyebrow "First of all, not everyone goes to watch you" "And second are you trying to recruit me for the team or something?" Mingyu grinned "Well, maybe. But mostly, I just think you'd enjoy it, Plus, you'd get to witness my incredible skill firsthand." Before you could come up with a comeback, the waitress arrived to take our orders, in which we gave and the waitress simply nodded before taking the menus from in front of us.
"Like i was saying" Mingyu begins but realizes your not fully paying attention, but the person to your left. You Ex. There he was sitting right across from you on his friend "Do you know him" Mingyu speaks up, knocking you out of your trances "Yeah, sorry what were you saying?" You tried to get back on track "Who is that?" Mingyu asks "My Ex." "Oh. sorry." "Its fine, it sure is a small world" You chuckle, trying to lighten the mood "We can go somewhere else if you want" Mingyu suggests but you turn the offer down "its fine, we already ordered, and he hasn't even noticed me anyways" Well he didnt notice you 10 seconds ago but he defiantly has now. "Y/N" The family voice sends chills down you spine. Mingyu watches you, waiting for your response but you dont move. Your ex-boyfriend, Jaemin, seized the opportunity while there was silence to approach your table. "Hey" he greeted, a unreadable look in his eyes "Its been a while. I've missed you" Before you could come up with a response, Mingyu, sensing the discomfort, stepped in "We're having a private dinner here. I think its best you leave us be," he states, a subtle intensity in his tone.
Jaemin, now growing upset "I just wanted to talk, catch up. Is that too much to ask?" You look up at him in disgust. How can you try and "catch up" after what he had done to you. he cheated. gaslight you. and now he wants to "talk?". Mingyu catches the look you gave him and returns to Jaemin, his gaze hardening. "Look, she's moved on. Maybe you should to instead of being a dick. Respect her boundaries" Mingyu spits and you can see Jaemin getting progressively angrier. The tension escalated quickly, creating an uncomfortable silence. You apperciated Mingyu stepping in, but it might have made the conflict worst. "Jaemin. Just go." You try and say sternly but you end up sounding like a 6 year old "Why? I know you miss me" you scoff "Me? Miss you? Never. Nobody wants you here so leave." You say sternly, keeping eye contact with him "Whatever, you're gonna come back crawling in a month anyways" Jaemin rushes out of the restaurant leaving you and Mingyu together once again "Sorry.." you mumble "Dont be. He's the one who should apologize for causing such a scene" Mingyu tsks, leaning back in his seat.
The waiter brings you your food, which you both enjoy while talking about all sorts of thinks, and at the end of the day you ended up agreeing to going to Mingyu's next football game "I'll save you the best seats, where you'll get to see the best view of me" Mingyu smirks "Thanks, want me to bring anything?" you walk up the stair of your dorm "Like?" Mingyu asks and you shrug "flowers? somthing to celebrate your win?" You suggest and Mingyu lets out a little laugh "What?" You turn to face him now that you've reached your door "You're so sure I'm gonna win, huh?" Mingyu teases and your face gets a little hot "What? are you not gonna win for me" You tease back "Oh trust me I'll make sure I win" You'd never truly noticed how amazing Mingyu was. Spending the whole day with him really changed how you saw him, he was caring, protective, defiantly a flirt, but you knew that even before you got to know each other, and funny. "Thanks for today, really" Mingyu smiles warmly "Me too, How about we plan something again sooner?" he asks "I'd like that" You smile up at him. "Get some sleep, i'll see you tomorrow" Mingyu backs away from the door and begins going down the stairs "Goodnight" you call out "goodnight, my love". You're left standing there, feeling all warm and fluffy on the inside because of this new nickname. You quietly enter your dorm, removing your shoes and going to get read for bed. Once you had changed into you pajama's you flopped onto the bed and opened your phone to see your lockscreen full of notifications from one person "Na Jaemin." The warmth Mingyu had left you with suddenly disappeared as you read the texts he had left you "Baby, I'm sorry I got mad." "How are you feeling? Do you want me to drop off some food for you?" "Who was that guy you were with?" "Baby??" "Honey?" "answer me" The text trail went on and on "I still have your stuff, you should come by and get it" "I miss you baby please dont be stubborn with me" This man had the audacity to text you such things and try and call you. You take a deep breath, now frustrated by the whole situation "I'll just deal with this tomorrow" You mumble, pushing away your problems like you normally do. You take one more deep sigh before turning off your lights and going to sleep. You thought you ex was just acting up. Kind of just stuck in his feels or whatever, but you had no idea the lengths this man would do to get you back.

a/n: AHHHH LOOK AT THE EDIT (banging my head against the door from excitement bc this is the first edit i got for my work LIKE THIS IS HUGE FOR ME) thank you sooooo much @drkbibi you made my day🤍
As the teacher droned on, Nari was struggling to maintain her patience. She wanted nothing more than to be anywhere else.
"I understand," she replied, her tone neutral and her gaze wandering towards the windows beyond. Even though she dreaded the teacher's presence, she forced herself to be polite.
"No you don't understand miss Shin" the teacher hissed making Nari furrow her brows "She punched a boy"
Nari's anger was beginning to boil over, her patience worn thin. "I'm sure you're not suffering from memory, but I have come here on multiple occasions to address this issue. All you've ever said in response has been the hollow promise that something will be done."
"We looked into this matter-"
"But nothing has happened," she continued, her voice dripping with disdain, "If you really looked did something that boy would've stopped but he didn't, the bullying only got worse"
The teacher thinned her lips "Miss Shin I am a teacher, I know better than you. They're just kids, Hana is being dramatic by a few teasings-"
Nari's brow knit together in frustration, unable to believe the teacher's sheer audacity.
"Are you calling her a liar?" Nari hissed, her voice dripping with venom, "How can you dismiss her concerns so easily? She is only a child, struggling with constant teasing and harassment. Yet you would dismiss these blatant acts of bullying as 'just kids being kids'?"
Nari knew this teacher well. One who brushed off the complaints of a less fortunate student, only to pamper to one of high status. If a child from a wealthy background whined, they'd immediately bow at their feet. But if one without means asked for help? They were ignored. With their suffering and pleas brushed off like a fly.
"I don't care if that boy's family contributes generously to this institution. If my sister is going to face punishment, so is he." Nari spat the words out, staring down the teacher with steely conviction.
The teacher scoffed, "Hana has told me about how you raised her, and," she cleared her throat, "that her father is often 'mean'. However, violence is never the answer. I expect better from you, as she is but a child, whose innocence must be protected and preserved. Whatever happens in your home shall remain private and shall not be allowed to influence her. We do not wish for Hana to be easily influenced or swayed by the dynamics within her household"
Nari's fingers were twitching, struggling to maintain her composure. She wasn't sure if the teacher was suggesting that Hana was learning violence from her father or not, but now it seemed clear that was the case. This teacher knew about the situation at home, and yet she still had the audacity to punish Hana for retaliating against her bully.
Nari chuckled coldly "you little bi-"
"Nini" a soft voice stopped her from showing the teacher her place
Nari's eyes softened as she saw her younger sister standing behind the teacher, her messy pigtails and crooked bow tying her heart in knots. Her bag was over her shoulder, ready to go, and her smile was as charming as ever, as if the situation was nothing more than a passing moment of joy.
"Consider yourself lucky my sister arrived, because this would have ended quite differently otherwise," she threatened, and the teacher widened her eyes in shock.
"But don't worry," Nari continued, "I'll return."
With that, she turned on her heel and grabbed her sister's hand, the two sister's making their way out of the school. Their footsteps echoing through the halls, fading as they left the building, the teacher left speechless in their wake.
Nari stopped and crouched down to be at her sister's level. She gently took her sister's face in her hands, staring into her eyes with understanding.
Nari's expression softened as tears threatened to fall, but she held them back, wanting to remain strong for her sister. She gently caressed Hana's hair in a gesture of affection, trying to comfort her.
"Nini are you mad at me?" Hana asked "He was being mean"
"Of course not," Nari reassured her sister, "Just next time, don't punch him. Come and tell me instead, alright? I'll handle everything."
"Won't you get in trouble for that?" her sister asked, a frown crossing her face. "Every time you help me, dad becomes angry and is mean to you."
Nari's heart ached as she saw her younger sister so worried. She was barely a child herself, her worries and fears too big for her small shoulders to bear. But despite her age, her worries were as real as anyone else's.
"Don't worry about me," Nari whispered, wrapping her arms around Hana in a warm embrace. She pressed a gentle kiss against Hana's temple
"This time will be different, I promise," Nari said, her voice cracking slightly as she fought back tears. "I won't let dad decide what's right and wrong, and you'll always have me on your side. I'll protect you, no matter what."
With that, Nari gently pulled away and looked into Hana's eyes, hoping to reassure her.
A warm smile lit up Hana's face as Nari grabbed her hand and they began to walk. Taking out her phone, Nari checked the time, letting out a curse when she saw that she was really late. She had to send a message to Bada. However, just as she was about to do so, her phone suddenly died.
"Fuck" Nari muttered and turned to Hana "We need to meet up with a friend of mine so I can give her something," Nari told her sister.
But Hana's gaze was elsewhere. When Nari followed her eyes, she saw a familiar man approaching their direction.
Nari felt a sense of familiarity when she saw this man, as if she had seen him before. But her memory was hazy, clouded by her other worries and concerns.
"Hey Nari," the man said, stopping in front of them.
Hana looked at her sister with confusion, and Nari looked back at her with a similar expression.
"Uh, hi?" Nari said, her voice tinged with confusion. "Sorry, who are you?"
The man's smile fell slightly, but he managed to hold it.
"Jake. Jake Sim. Do you remember me?" He asked, and a pang of recognition shot through Nari as the name finally clicked in her head.
"Oh. Right. The Twitter guy," she said, rolling her eyes. "What do you want?"
"My mom works here so I came to drop something for her. I saw you and wanted to say hi" he paused "and ask you something"
"Hana, can you go on over there and sit?" Nari asked, and her sister complied, walking a safe distance away from the two adults' conversation, but not so far away that she couldn't hear them.
"What do you want?" Nari asked Jake, her tone hard and dry. She knew what he was gonna ask, his comments under her tweets told her enough
Jake grinned, placing his hand on his neck. "I sent you a message, but you must not've seen it."
Nari groaned inwardly, this man can't take a hint
"I wanted to ask if you're free this week, do you want to hang out?" He asked, a hopeful glimmer in his eyes "Like on a date"
"Look, I've seen your messages, and I ignored you," she said with a calmness that belied an seething, underlying frustration.
"I've made things perfectly clear by never replying to you. That obviously means I'm not interested. It couldn't be any more evident."
"But that doesn't mean we can't try," he persisted. He was clearly not going to back down
Nari finally had had enough when he grabbed her hand. "Man, back off." She hissed, with mounting annoyance. "I don't even like men. I'm done with this bullshit."
"You don't?" He asked, a hint of confusion in his tone.
"I thought it was obvious," Nari said, rolling her eyes with a heavy sigh.
"Don't let that ruin the fun of anything with me," Jake said with a smile, oblivious to her discomfort.
Nari rolled her eyes again, feeling her anger growing. Enough. She began to walk away, dragging Hana by the hand, and picking up her bag along the way. She was done with his bullshit. She was tired of dealing with such clueless men.
Now all she needed to do was go faster to the place she agreed to meet with Bada, hoping she will still be there
Nerves got to Bada, who kept nervously tapping her feet. This annoyed an elderly woman seated next to her, but Bada didn't seem to mind.
No matter how hard she tried, Bada couldn't stop her mind from drifting back to the brunette with the short hair. She wondered why her heart was beating so fast. Just a week ago, she couldn't even stand the woman. Now everything about her intrigued her.
She checked the time, realizing she was a full 10 minutes late to the meet-up. She quickly sent Nari a message asking for her whereabouts.
Yet, her many messages were no use. Nari still did not reply. As time progressed, Bada grew more and more annoyed. The longer it went, the more she felt hurt. It would have been better to at least receive some sort of text from Nari, letting her know why she had not arrived yet, but Bada had recieved none.
Just as Bada was about to call Tatter, a notification caught her attention. With a click, she opened it, only to be met with a paragraph that left her feeling upset.
She scoffed, after locking her phone. Both of her emotions of hurt and anger were evident. While Bada waited for her for almost an hour, Nari was off, having fun with some man. She was mad, and most importantly she was upset. Bada would not lie to herself. She knew deep inside her that her feelings for Nari had grown more than the slightest bit. So, seeing that post hurt her more than she could have ever imagined.
She felt stupid for thinking that Nari's flirting carried any truth, and that she meant it in some way. In fact, Nari often flirted with many other people, so Bada was naive for thinking that she meant it.
Kicking the rock before her in anger, she rose from her seat and started walking away. The sound of her phone drew her attention. Still annoyed, she decided to see what it was. But, when she saw the message, she froze. Just by a single letter in the contact name, she knew who this was. Yeri, a name she was not expecting to see right now. Her heart sank. She had thought everything was over, but seeing her name on her phone screen made her stomach drop.

Rockstar Rocker
“ stay in the middle , like you a little !”
Summary ; One of toman’s only female companions in the gang is actually a really famous rockstar! How will our beloved Manjiro react to being friends with a famous lead singer
warnings ; fem!reader
might do a k-pop idol version (о´∀`о)
Tumblr media
“Yo Y/N! “ Baji shouted out out as y/n left class with the guitar bag hanging on her back.
she turned her head around just a little so that Baji could see she had acknowledged his call for her.
“Yeah?”
“are you heading to the meeting? Let me come with you we can-“
“Im not heading to the meeting, thats later . I have something to do right now. Talk to you later” y/n said as she walked out of the class and headed to her so called “something”
“ugh shes so mysterious, im sick of this! what if shes a spy from another gang?! or even worse…. Shes apart of another gang?!!?” Baji thought as his reasoning became more and more irrational.
“This calls for a toman og follow party!!!” He shouted as he ran out of the class in a hurry opening his phone to call his friends and discuss a plan.
“do you really think shes apart of another gang.. really?” Mitsuya asked in a sarcastic tone as he watched Baji take small things as you leaving for other things as treason.
“Im going to agree with Takashi here, y/n hasnt done anything wrong.” Draken also chirped in , confused as to what Baji was on about.
“Okay , well that settles it! We will follow her and see if im right or wrong!!” Baji stated as he walked to follow where he saw y/n last walking.
“Wait we cant-“ said mitsuya , but it was already too late. Most of the Og gang had started to follow Baji , not out of untrusting you but to just laugh at Baji once they find out it was nothing.
They walked until they stopped at a concert venue.
“This is where i saw her walk into , this is probably her hide out-“
“Would you look at that, the Loci’s are performing right now” said Manjiro as he read the post stuck on the wall.
“You’re right, she’s probably went in to see them perform” said Chifuya as he opened the doors to the venue and made his way into the concert.
They all made their way into the concert, hearing the beats of the drum and guitars getting louder.
“If we dont find her here, can we stay to listen to the rest of the concert?” Manjiro stated as he swayed his body to the beats excited to see the concert.
As the boys went into the venue they heard a familiar voice start to sing.
“no fucking way.” Draken stated first as he looked to see the lead singer of the famous Loci’s.
“You gotta be kidding me.” Manjiro stated
“fuck off” Baji said
The lead singer they were looking at was no other that their female friend, y/n.
She was singing and strumming her bass as the crowd continued to shout her lyrics back at her.
The sweat dripping from her face reflected the studio lights as she flipped her hair back. Indulging in her lyrics, not realising her so called “secret” was out.
As the concert was coming to an end and the screaming crowd started to leave as Y/n said her thanks with her band.
“you did amazing y/n!” Leon , her drummer said to her as he wrapped his hand around her neck placing you in choke hold.
“You really did hit that high note, i got shivers dude.” Nini , her bass said in a monotone voice.
“THEY ARE RIGHT! You did amazing y/n!!!” Manjiro said as he ran up to the stage.
“thank you Mikey- wait. Mikey? What the hell are you doing here” y/n said as she took her electric guitar off in utter confusion. Staring at her gang mates who had supposedly found out about her band.
“ someone had a suspicion about you, so we followed and now we know your actually just apart of a band instead of another gang.. right “ mituya stated as he stared at Baji silently alerting y/n that he thought she was very suspicious and maybe even a traitor.
That thought alone gave her a giggling fit, as she laughed at Baji for even thinking she would betray the gang she called her second home.
“Im sorry y/n..” baji said as he looked downwards embarrassed and shameful that he even thought she would betrayed them.
“Its okay, but im shocked you even got in! The tickets have been sold out for ages!” Y/n stated as she came to realise they wouldve found out sooner or later.
“Y/n i didnt know you could play electric and sing! Thats so insanely cool.” Chifuya said as his eyes gleamed with stars as he could finally see a “famous” person in real life let alone be friends with them.
“I mean… i do have a world tour coming up. You guys should come to the Asia maybe even American part of it! Ill even pay” she said subtly flexing her fame and wealth to the boys. As their ears perked up at the thought of travelling with friends around the globe.
“YES!”

can u write sum ab luke having a kid but u were the babysitter and luke falls for u😮 (the mom isn’t really in the picture cuz we won’t be that messy🤣)
how you get the girl - l.hughes
set later in the future warnings: none i think
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
luke hughes, never did he expect to have a baby. that was until one day someone left a child at his doorsteps. that was almost a year ago, things were easier in the off season but once season hit he needed to find a babysitter. much to his luck he found someone who was able to watch his baby while he had games and practices. hockey surroundings were not most suitable for a young baby.
“and everything is still in the same places they should be. thank you again i know it was last minute you’re a life savior.” luke said before grabbing his hockey bag heading off to practice.
you loved babysitting for luke, his baby girl was such a delight, never gave you a hard time spending most of your time cuddled up on the couch. today was no different, you and ellie, lukes baby were cuddled up on his couch sleeping when luke got back from practice. he placed his bag down quietly before placing a blanket on you and the baby smiling to himself.
he tried to deny his feelings but seeing you care so much for his kid and how much his kid adores you, he couldn’t help but to think to himself his feelings for you.
another hour passed before you and ellie woke up and luke was sitting right next to you guys watching tv quietly.
“sorry did i wake you?” luke said turning the tv down more. “no dont worry, sorry i fell asleep ill head out now.” you said before sitting up gently handing ellie to him standing up, before he pulled you down. “its fine stay, dinner is almost done and she likes it better when you feed her and i was hoping we could talk after.” he said and you were nervous for the talk but nodded and sat back down. what if he didnt need you anymore, what was going on.
after feeding ellie and putting her to bed luke was putting away the dishes before you hopped up on the counter next to him.
“what’d you need to talk about?” you said looking down at him, voice clearly nervous. he stood between your legs looking up at you before letting out a shaky breath “this might be a lot but, i really like you. i haven’t liked anyone in this long. i know you’re a babysitter and its your job but you care so much for ellie and always respect my schedule, always dropping anything to be here, and ellie loves you. you’re super sweet and i stay up late at night thinking about what itd be like if you were mine, its okay if you dont-“ you cut off his rambles with a kiss. his hands cupped your cheek while yours held onto the collar of his shirt pulling him closer.
after pulling away you whispered to him “i like you too.” he let out a sigh of relief before kissing you again. glad he finally got the courage to get his girl.

"I just thought maybe we could write this [song] together."
In season 1, Ricky can't/isn't ready to express how he feels about Nini in his own words, so he uses her's instead (by singing her song, "I Think I Kinda Ya Know", back to her during auditions). It's not very well-received, at least not by Nini (Gina's eyes light up when she hears Ricky sing for the first time). Partially because Nini has a new boyfriend and she doesn't appreciate Ricky effectively forcing his way back into her life by trying out for the musical...but mostly because he still can't say "I love you" to her, even if it's in a song (that he didn't even write). Later, Ricky wrote "Just for a Moment" for Nini, but never actually sang it to her (at least not in their reality...and when he did sing an excerpt of it to Big Red, Red immediately thought it was about Gina).
Then, in season 2, he writes Nini yet another song (two, actually, but "The Perfect Gift" is so generic that I consider it more of a cute holiday song by Josh than a song Ricky wrote for Nini) — and again, he doesn't actually get to sing it to her. They're so bad at communicating with one another that they spend the entirety of that day (Valentine's Day) trying to meet up, but never being able to. They can't even get the timing of a simple phone call right (a call that was Gina's idea, by the way) so Ricky has to sing "Even When" to Nini's voicemail (and vice versa).
Later on in season 2, Ricky & Nini were tasked (by Miss Jenn) with writing an original song for Beauty & The Beast together and they couldn't do it. Nini, instead, wrote the song on her own — a song that ended up being about how she feels, understandably, idolized and suffocated by her relationship with Ricky...which she told Kourtney not to tell Ricky about and then told Ricky, to his face, that the song wasn't about him.
Ricky writes Nini another song ("Let You Go") after they break up (or at least he finishes it post-breakup) that he claims was written for Nini, as a goodbye or some kind of "Hail Mary", but he never sings it to her...because it wasn't so much about her as it was about him grieving the childhood relationship they had and coming to terms with the fact that ending it was the right choice for both of them.
My point being, Ricky has always written songs for someone else (or claimed they were for someone else), but never with them (technically, there's that throw away line in s2 where Carlos mentions that Ricky wrote some of the lyrics in "In A Heartbeat", the song for Seb, but I'm talking romantic relationships here). He couldn't write a song with Nini because they were never on the same page, they couldn't communicate with or understand each other personally, so they couldn't collaborate musically (& even the songs he wrote for her rarely went the way he wanted them to).
Which is why it speaks volumes when Ricky says he wants to write a song with Gina. Finally, he's in a relationship with someone that's built on true friendship, mutual support and understanding (& vice versa for Gina, too), someone that he can communicate and collaborate with. With Nini, it was always about pushing his feelings onto her, but now he doesn't just want to sing a song to Gina about just his feelings (though he'll do that, too) he wants to listen to her, to know how she feels. He wants to work together to create something that they can share, that's not just his or just her's, but uniquely their's.
In season 2, when Nini flees after Ricky tries to talk to her about the song she wrote ("The Rose Song") she says something like, "It's just a song, Ricky." to which he responds, "A song can mean everything."
He was right, a song can mean everything.

let’s talk about how gina compliments ricky’s love language so much and he was able to be himself in this relationship as opposed to nini
You know, I appreciate how much this season made emphasis on how both Nini and Gina react differently to Ricky's love gestures. Nini felt suffocated by him. Gina wanted him to fight for her and do those big gestures. And both reactions are valid. I made a post last season about how Ricky and Gina’s love languages complement each other and I love how the show proves me correct on how I interpret this characters. This is going to be a lengthy post.
Ricky is pretty much a huge gestures type of guy. He is unabashedly romantic when he wants to be. He is also incredible clingy and someone that needs reassurance and affirmations. He gives love by big gestures and likes to receive love by words of affirmation.
His relationship with Nini ever since the start of the series showed how incompatible they’ve become for each other. To start off, I think Nini was unable to understand Ricky’s family situation because hers is very different so it might have been because of this that she didn’t understand his reaction towards a public declaration of love (his parents probably didn’t do that anymore). She was unable to identify what he needed from her and he failed to communicate why he felt that way. It goes both ways. He needed to say the words when he felt he was ready to say it. And that's very imporant.
But also, the first thing we learn about their relationship is that Nini feels like she was able to shine over the summer and it’s hoping for new opportunities that she feels Ricky holds her back from. Ricky is resistant to this and tries out for the musical to get her back, an idea Nini is not happy about because she feels he is invading her space. During his audition, he performs a song for Nini to try and tell her he loves her. He thinks is a declaration of love but for Nini is not. But Gina is actually impressed by this. And so, even with the first episode, the show lists many reasons why they don’t seem to be compatible anymore. Nini doesn’t like Ricky’s easy going approach to things. And is absolutely fair. I think she needs someone that pushes her to be more ambitious and that shares the same desire for challenges.
Ricky confessing his love for Nini in an outburst at the end of Season 1 felt like he forced it out because he knew that’s what she needed to hear from him to get back together. He was afraid to lose that sense of familiarity. It’s what makes his love confession to Gina so different because it was intentional. He was so sure and so confident and he wanted to tell her that despite not knowing what the future holds.
Early on Season 2, it's made clear they have completely different ideas on what the other is willing to do for each other. Ricky relied too much on her to have some sense of stability because everything at his home keeps falling apart. Nini just wants to spread her wings and it’s willing to go far to pursue her dreams (“I resolve to follow my dreams however far away they take me”) which is why she felt so trapped and suffocated by him. Ricky’s abandonment issues made him clingier than usual. I also think she was a bit rude at times and had a hard time trying to understand him. Like, when he said he was told he had not profitable qualities on the aptitude test and she brush it off and told him she didn’t come back for him. It was pretty harsh. I don't think neither of them knew what the other needed emotionally anymore. It was a bit of a mess and Ricky didn’t even know what he was supposed to do. Ricky’s love language for her was quality time and gestures but I don’t think that was Nini’s vibe. It got to a point she wasn’t receptive of his attempts at fixing their relationship. And as I said, Ricky needs to feel that his attempts are at least appreciated. And Nini never really did a good job at lifting him up.
A lot of Ricky's issues with how it went down with Nini is that he was dealing with his mom abandonment issues and Nini wasn't putting the same efforts into staying with Ricky (long distance or otherwise) and she's valid for this. But seeing it from Ricky's perspective too is like another person is also choosing to leave him.
Now, Gina is someone that wants to feel wanted. She wants people to fight for her. This is probably due to her family and how they didn’t put her as a priority growing up. How her mom barely even validates what’s important for her. This is why she liked EJ at first, because he gave her the attention she needed at that time. And it’s fair to say Gina gives love by words of affirmation and gifts. And likes to receive love by gestures and quality time. Same as Ricky.
She was impressed by Ricky singing to Nini at auditions on the pilot. She told Ricky to sing the song to Nini by the phone on Valentine’s Day because “every girl [her] likes a sweet gesture”. She threw a big surprise party for Carlos when they weren't even that close yet. She likes huge gestures. And I don’t think it was a coincidence when Ricky asked her back in Season 2 *if they were dating* and he went behind her back but for a good reason (and the whole thing about asking Miss Jenn if she can add Nini to the show last minute) if she’d like it. Gina answers that she would be flattered. Ricky took Gina's words without considering that this is not something Nini would want. For Ricky, it’s so they can spent more time together (and Gina sees it that way too) but Nini does not. She sees it as an added pressure. And you see how much Ricky's midset has been altered by his relationship with Nini that on Season 4 he thinks Gina would be relieved by Dani taking her place as Gabriella because she's been too busy with the movie despite him wanting them to spend time together. And Gina isn’t happy. For her, the the show is also a thing for them.
The season actually makes a lot of parallels to this. It also parallels this especifit moment from Season 2 when Ricky wants to send a *dumb* text to Nini that says something about "he is happy she's following her dreams but also he wishes he was her dream. And wants her to turn aroud and come back here. I believe the word he used was forever." And we know Nini would've felt pressured by that text. And that’s understandable. But the writers are so funny because on 408 during Gina's confessional she says she hasn't made a decision about the movie yet and wishes Ricky would fight for her a little more. And in Ricky's confessional he says he once told a girl (Nini) to stay home and it didn’t end too well so he doesn't want to make the same mistake. But Gina wants for Ricky to be Ricky and go all and beyond. But he has grown too much to be selfish. But he does end up doing what Gina wants by singing to her about forever fully expecting her to follow her dreams away from him without even knowing Gina had already decided to follow her dreams and be with him too. We truly love a full circle.
Moving to Season 3, it’s clear Gina likes the feeling of sharing things with a partner, and she saw how EJ was unable to give her that or even make space for her to be a priority but I do think there’s a lot of growth on Gina about understating the needs of her partner too. For example, Gina was able to give Ricky space after the whole Halloween situation. Ricky called her asking her for space and she allowed. It wasn't a break up, just mutual understanding that everyone needs a minute to take it all in and it's not because they don’t want to face it.
On Season 4, right off the bat, it shows us Gina embraces Ricky’s dorky and clingy side a lot. She likes his unexpected visits and ideas. She likes when Ricky plans stuffs and sneaks into her trailer. She likes when Ricky texts her a lot. Gina wants to feel that love because she lacked a lot of that growing up. Unlike Nini, who wanted to be free and get new experiences. Gina likes the stability Ricky provides her. And another thing Sofia said on a interview is that Gina likes how Ricky is very easy going because Gina is already too perfectionist. But mostly, I think you can appreciate how Gina encourages Ricky to be a little more ambitious while Ricky encourages Gina to be more relaxed. To be more giddy and bring down her walls. Nini felt like she coulnd't be truly herself around Ricky while Gina is the total opposite, she feels seen and understood with him because he is able to give her that with the way he is. And Gina does it to Ricky in return by making him feel wanted and appreciated for who he is. I do hope Nini finds someone (preferentially a girl) that makes her feel that way too. Seen and understood.
And also, let's point out how both Ricky and Gina's love language is also physical touch because they are unable to stop touching each other even if by friendly little shoulder touches. They’re unable to stop kissing each other. Gina can’t stop cupping Ricky’s cheeks. Or holding hands. In conclusion, Ricky and Gina are perfect and love each other so much. And their love story is so well written and for the books.

gina wanted someone to fight for her. (a short sort of analysis on gina porter)
ej never fought for gina during their miscommunication in the season two finale. he just cancelled the date and let her go. if it wasn’t for ashlyn talking to gina, they wouldn’t of gotten together because he didn’t fight for her. in season three he said he was doing the musical so maybe his dad can let him stay in salt lake and they could be together, but we all know his dad’s approval was his main motivation. he ditched her and made promises he couldn’t keep. he didn’t fight for her when she gave him another chance to show up at prom. when they broke up, he deflected, bringing ricky up unprovoked, and then let her go, again, without a fight. (though they only dated for two weeks and what they had wasn’t strong enough for a fight but i digress)
when gina admitted to ricky her feelings in the last episode of season three, she was prepared to walk away with her head held high, but he stopped her, and like ej told ricky in season four, gina wouldn’t be with him if she didn’t know the guy he could be. all of season three ricky continuously showed up for her and regretted what happened the semester before. gina saw something in ricky all the way back in season one and she knew that he was the one. although it took some time, due to the fact that ricky didn’t want to make the same mistakes he did with nini.
gina would’ve loved to receive a bunch of messages from ricky telling her he wishes she could stay with him unlike nini would’ve. (which is so valid for her to feel! this is just me explaining how different nini and gina receive and view love) she doesn’t see it as him “holding her back” she saw it as someone who fights for what they built and she’s always wanted someone to fight for her, and ricky did that. he showed up for her and stayed. even if she would’ve left, he sang to the world how he’s in love and how they’re forever no matter what. that’s all gina has ever wanted. growing up no one in her life fought to stay in it. jaime left. her mom leaves her alone a lot of the times because of her job. her dad isn’t there. no one fought to be in her life that way. she’s so used to leaving and moving. then ricky comes around and promises her she’ll never walk alone (puppy love lyrics reference!) that they built a sacred home forever, and showed it to her continuously all season.
also, want to mention, in the troy and gabriella scene in the play, one of her lines is, “i always do the right thing, maybe i want to do something crazy this time. i mean, everything about my life has been full speed ahead.”
while ricky was worried of holding her back, or ruining her moment and saying the wrong thing because of his past mistakes with nini, gina wouldn’t of minded that at all. she wanted ricky to finally say i love you. to know what they have is real so they could fight for their love together no matter what happens next. (she already knew he loved her though, gina just needed him to say it so she could finally do “something crazy”)

poop killer
syn -> ran spends his holidays with his family at rindou’s house. things that have never happened before, happened.
warnings : poop, crack, a bunch of nonsense
-
the door swings open, and ran stands tall with his little family.
you, and the little baby you had a year and some months back.
a gorgeous boy who got ran’s long hair with your hair color, his eyes, and nails.
everything else was you.
“hi rin!” you beam, holding the boy in his little coat kokonoi gifted them.
ran’s hair was growing, and he hadn’t had time to cut it.
things had been busy, and he hadn’t realized.
but his hair was just up to his shoulders, falling in curtain bangs just a bit.
a hat was over his head to hide his complete mess of hair, not like anyone cared though.
rindou lets you in, smiling and hugging his brother.
“welcome! how was the drive?” rindou asks ran, closing the door behind them.
ran sighs dramatically, before dropping down onto the couch.
rindou rolls his eyes and drops down next to him, pulling his nephew into his arms.
“tiring. you have to do the drive next time.” ran jokes, letting the boy grab onto his hand.
rindou laughs at that, knowing his brother did the drive because he really wanted to see his new house.
he realizes you’ve been pretty quiet, and it’s because you’re focused on pouring some purple liquid into a baby cup.
rindou is confused now, looking between you and the baby.
“he on medication or something?” rindou asks, scratching his ear.
you bring the cup over to your boyfriend and shake your head, handing it to him.
“it’s prune juice. poor papa hasn’t taken a dump for days.” you explain, rubbing your son’s foot.
the boy drinks it happily, smiling at ran from behind the cup.
ran assists him, making sure nothing spills and he isn’t drinking too much.
rindou puts bubble guppies on the tv for him to watch and leans back.
“you can go unpack. your room is actually ready.” rindou informs, pointing upstairs.
ran gives you a grin before looking back at rindou.
“did you get that mat I told you to get?” ran asks, handing his son over to him.
“did you pay the 300 dollars?” rindou snorts, holding the baby upright.
you laugh, bringing your suitcase upstairs with a salty ran following behind.
-
eventually, it grows late and rindou’s making dinner for everyone that’s supposed to be here.
izana, kakucho, and shion hadn’t made it yet, but they were on the way.
izana complains he hasn’t had rindou’s lasagna in so long he might die without it.
so now he’s ready to set everything up.
“nini!” he hears below him, making him look down.
kenan is beaming, standing in a slight squat and holding his arms up.
it was a awkward stance, and he looked a bit uncomfortable.
“why are you standing like that papa? what’s wrong?” rindou frowns, ready to lift him up.
you come into the kitchen and stop him, holding your sons little hand.
“he’s finally pooping. just give him some time.” you explain, kissing at your son.
he coos and mocks you, running over to his father while screaming ‘poo poo’ loudly.
rindou chuckles, watching as you follow after him in a rush.
the doorbell rings, and he pauses in garnish the lasagna with cheese.
he walks over to the door and opens it, seeing his best friends standing with gifts.
“happy holidays!” they yell, save for izana who was rubbing his eye.
“hi!” the mini ran screams back, doing his squat once more.
a loud poot leaves his bum, and izana squeezes his brows together.
“kenan that wasn’t cute.” he jokes, stepping inside and placing the gifts down.
you give him a hug and a kiss on the cheek as always, and do the same with the others.
ran is laid out on the couch in pajamas, half asleep and playing with one of kenan’s toys.
everyone settled in, and rindou puts the food in the oven.
kenan runs up to you and squeezes your hand with a frown.
“what’s wrong? done making poo poo?” you ask, grabbing the baby bag.
he nods, and he’s a smart baby. he already has the diaper for you in his little hand.
“thank you.” you coo, lifting him onto the couch and laying him on his back.
ran glances at the two of you before kissing your cheek and getting up to give you space.
he goes into the kitchen instead, where izana and his brother is.
“look at that. the princess is awake.” izana jokes, dapping him up.
ran rolls his eyes but says nothing back, grabbing a cup of cranberry juice from the fridge.
“it feels nice to be here. nice and warm. can’t wait to sleep in my bed.” izana sighs in content.
ran nods in agreement, downing his drink.
at the same time the oven begins to beep, you let out a horrified scream.
“oh my god- ran!” you scream out from the living room,
rindou immediately gets up from his seat and goes over to you in confusion.
you’re holding kenan upside down and he’s crying, holding onto you as best as he can.
pure horror is on your face and his as you try to rush upstairs.
“he’s still shitting- it’s pouring out!” you yell, going to the nearest bathroom.
you leave drips of shit behind you, all leaking from the boys pamper.
you hear ran’s laugh from downstairs, as you rush to turn the bath water on and get the diaper off him.
rindou is right behind you trying to assist even a little bit while slipping on the shit.
kenan is holding onto you while screaming, trying to climb out the tub.
there’s shit everywhere, and it’s running down his back from when he was upside down.
“oh my god- I’m so sorry rindou.” you exclaim, getting the diaper off him.
he wraps it for you and dumps it into the bathroom’s little garbage.
rindou doesn’t offer you a respond, grabbing the baby soap and his duck towel.
“it’s okay papa, you gotta take a bath.” you say, turning to grab everything from rindou.
rindou hands you everything and looks at his tub in shock and horror.
you follow his sight and understand why your son is screaming now.
he took yet another shit in the tub, and it was huge and solid.
kenan is trying to run away from it, but the water makes it splatter everywhere.
“oh my god-“ “I’ll go get gloves.” rindou informs, trying not to laugh.
he runs downstairs and ran is helping himself to the food, cutting lasagna for everyone.
“ran your girl looks like she’s about to cry. there’s shit everywhere.” rindou chuckles, grabbing gloves.
“better than me. I would’ve thrown up or passed out.” ran says with a sigh, placing his plate on the table.
rindou rolls his eyes and brings you the gloves, watching you rush to put it on.
he puts on some beside you, before grabbing paper towel to scoop out as much as possible and dump it in the garbage.
there’s a flash, and you immediately look up to try and figure out what it was.
izana was holding his polaroid camera, smiling big as he shook the film.
“izana go away!” you laugh, finally getting all the poop out of the tub.
the man giggled and ran off, jumping into rindou’s bed.
you sigh, and rindou leans on the sink to clean himself up.
ran peeks into the bathroom before walking in, making a face at the smell.
“I brought his clothes.” ran says, handing his boy a clean plastic cup.
it busies him, making him dump the water on himself repeatedly.
you flip him off, washing the rest of the runny poop off your baby’s back.
ran ushers rindou out of the bathroom and sits on the toilet, smiling at his son.
-
you get kenan cleaned up and in pajamas, before laying him down to sleep.
when you get downstairs, kakucho was cleaning up the mess you had to leave.
you thank him softly before walking into the kitchen.
shion shrieks and runs from you, backing into the wall.
“girl you got shit on you!” shion exclaims, pointing to your shirt.
you immediately glance at your shirt, before taking it off your body.
the guys give you privacy, save for ran who was staring directly at your chest.
you toss the shirt at him and the poop mark lands on his cheek.
ran shrieks loudly like a little girl in disgust, before tossing it at rindou.
true to his earlier words, he hunches over the garbage and pukes.
rindou panics and throws it to shion, who’s across the room.
now they’re playing catch with it, trying to see who the poop with land on.
there’s poop on everyone’s hands save for yours, and everyone is disgusted.
the smell is horrendous, and you aren’t sure if it’s because of the prune juice.
“what the fuck is going- on!” izana yelps, getting off the couch from his nap and slipping.
on what, you might ask?
the only spot kakucho hadn’t cleaned up yet was where it leaked most.
right by the couch. under izana’s feet.
izana goes sliding, before landing next to the tree and hitting his head on the fireplace.
suddenly everyone stops, and ran doesn’t know whether to puke some more or laugh.
he does both.
-
now everyone is fresh out of the shower, sitting in yours and ran’s room.
izana sits on the bed with a bandage wrapped around his head and a ice pack, as well as tissue in his nose to stop the bleeding.
you lay next to him with kenan on your chest asleep.
rindou is at the edge of the bed sprawled out.
ran is sitting in the hanging chair with kakucho, watching the movie.
shion was asleep on the rug.
it was silent, save for home alone playing on the tv in the background.
“you know. I didn’t know babies can poop that much.” izana stated after three hours of being silent.
you chuckle, rubbing your son’s back and looking over to izana.
“yeah well. this was his first time.” you say quietly, handing him another tissue.
he changes out the one in his nose and tosses the used one in the garbage.
rindou watches the tissue, flinching and leaning back so he would make it.
izana rolls his eyes, cursing him out under his breath.
there’s a quiet pap that echos throughout the room, and everyone looks at kenan.
he’s half awake now, a frown deep on his little face as his eyes strain.
“anyone else smell that?” kakucho questions hesitantly, looking around the room.

proud of you ⋆ ࣪. nishimura riki.
the only comfort that he needs is you. warnings: a bit angst and fluff, ni-ki sad, mentions of blood.
Tumblr media
you had a bad feeling.
these past few days, whatever you thought or felt ended up happening. at first you thought it was a coincidence, then you joked that you were a witch, but now the feeling was overwhelming.
you could tolerate anything but when your intrusive thoughts focused on ni-ki.
it was almost dark when you got to your boyfriend's room. it seemed strange to you not to have found him in the practice room but even stranger that you did not meet any of the boys while you were walking through the building, looking for your beautiful black-haired boy.
ignoring the hideous bulge in your chest, you stood in front of ni-ki's bedroom door and knocked softly.
one, two, three times. nothing.
the anguish grew in your chest as you kept hitting and received no response.
"go away, jake-hyung! i already told you i don't want to go out." ni-ki replied with a broken voice.
"it's me, my angel." you said.
you felt him sniffling and the door opened little by little, revealing him gigant figure looking at you with the most forced smile you've ever seen and his failed attempt to wipe away his tears.
"hi babe." he greeted, doing his best to appear normal. "come in, it's cold in the hallway." —he pointed as he stepped aside to let you pass.
"what happened, my prince?" you asked, trying to stay calm.
"oh... nothing. i have a horrible allergy." he said. you knew he was lying to you; you knew him well enough to know when he tries it.
you cautiously approached him and wrapped your arms around his neck, rising on your toes to hug him and quickly felt how he hugged you back, doing it so tightly and beginning to wet your clothes and part of your neck with his tears.
"sorry, sorry." he said, between choked sobs. "i'm so sorry, i'm sorry." his whole body trembled in horrible spasms as he clung to you, like if you were his raft in a horrible storm in the midst of the dark and raging sea.
"shh, it's all good amorcito" you said in your language, getting a minimal laugh from him, drowning in tears.
you stayed like that with him for a while, hugging him while you caressed his beautiful hair, until you leaned a little towards him and heard a groan of pain.
you quickly separated.
"what happened nini ?" you asked.
he didn't say anything, just looked at his leg, where you both saw his gray cotton pants with a bloodstain.
"NI-KI.. WHAT?... ARE YOU... B-"
"yeah, i know... maybe i... kicked the mirror in the rehearsal room..." you looked at him with concern on his face, heading to his bathroom, where you knew he had a first-aid kit to help him heal.
"sit down, love." you kindly ordered.
he did what you asked, sitting on the floor and rolling up his pants so you could treat his leg.
you saw that the cut was superficial, as if it were a crack made with a razor, so you calmed down and opened the alcohol to disinfect the wound.
"it'll probably burn you, so squeeze my shoulder, baby." you spoke.
ni-ki squeezed your shoulder a little, while biting his lower lip trying to contain the moan.
"okay, it's over. you're so strong, my love. i'm glad you're mine." you told him as you began to wrap the bandage around her leg.
"thank you for being with me" ni-ki said while looking at you, having already stopped crying.
you carefully got up and set the materials aside and took his hands to help him up.
"do you want to cuddle in bed with me?" you asked as you wiped a few traces of her tears from her cheeks.
he nodded shyly, following you to the bed while they both took off their shoes.
you opened your arms while he got under the blankets and got closer to your warmth.
"do you want to tell me what happened?" you asked softly, as you carefully ran your fingers through his hair.
you felt how your boyfriend let out a shaky breath in your chest and he began to tell you, avoiding your gaze.
"we were practicing a dance with the guys and i got mad because i couldn't do a move... we went over it a few times but i still didn't like how it came out and... i got so frustrated i kicked the mirror and hurt myself." he said in whispers, as if it were a secret. "the guys were... all quiet... and we finished the rehearsal."
"oh honey… i'm so sorry." you said not knowing much how to comfort him.
you felt so stupid for never knowing how to use your words, but your way of showing everything was with tact and physical affection.
"i … i'm so sorry, babe." he continued. "i promise i'll be someone strong for you, i don't want to keep letting you down… just…please don't leave me. i'll try to be stronger. i'm sorry."
your chest tightened as you felt how ni-ki cried again while clinging to you.
"love." you called him, while you took his face and caressed his cheek. "you don't ever have to be stronger than you really are. you're just nishimura, my beautiful boyfriend, the most beautiful and purest person i've ever met and that exists on this planet.. you are the only good thing in my life and i would do anything to make you see you the way i see you. i am so, so, so proud of you."
"aren't you... disappointed?" he said, coming out of your chest and looking into your eyes.
"no, nini. nobody could ever be disappointed in you." your hands went to his face as you pulled him closer and placed a soft kiss on his lips.
"i love you." you both said in unison, laughing tenderly.
looks like you've now earned yourself an hour of free full-face kissing.

He sighed when he glanced over the mountains of paperwork on his desk, you could even say he whined. Slumping down and pouting, throwing the led in his hand onto the table. “What’s with all this work?” The boy complained, before he leaned back against his seat, cuddling up against you. “Do we really have to wait until I’m finished?”
Today was like any other day, with dazai refusing to do any of his assignments. Mori wanted you to do something about it, and as much as you’d like to protest, he was your boss after all. Which is why you decided to make it fun for you as well. That led to your current situation, with dazai sitting in your lap and diligently working, all while your dick was buried deep inside him.
Your hands fit perfectly on his slim waist, holding him and making sure that he stays still. The feeling of his smooth skin was nice to the touch, and you rested your head on his shoulder. Sometimes when you exhaled, the hot air would tickled his ears. If you weren’t easing him, then he doesn’t know what it was. How can you expect him to do all of this while you are touching him like you are about to bend him over? Not that he minds, he desperately wants you to do so. How long has he waited for any action to happen? Maybe hours now.
He felt full and filled, it was a very erotic experience. Every once in a while his insides would clench around you, and he’d squeeze his thighs together. This was worse than any torture methods he learned, much worse. The words on the paper in front of him started to blur, it was like he forgot how to read. Yet again he slumped back against you, biting his bottom lip at the small yet delicious friction that gave him. “Hmm..! God, y/n, can’t you just fuck me?”
Dazai really couldn’t wait any longer. He already worked for more than an hour, can’t you do him a small favour? Subconsciously, or maybe he knew what he was doing, he rocked his hips. The boy moved so slow, like a ship sailing on a calm ocean, he thought you wouldn’t notice. In contrary you did saw it, and grabbed his chin to make him face you, then you whispered your answer, “no.”
Without giving him any reasoning, only a cold and commanding refusal. For some reasons it made him even more wet, he felt his body shake and his dick twitch at your voice. His precum was dripping down his shaft and coating his soft thighs, you’d even dare say he looked like a girl with all those fluids he let out. “If you want to get fucked so bad, finish your work sooner.” You suggested, though he knew you weren’t giving him an inch. It was an order and you weren’t going to show him mercy. Fine, guess he will have to use his trump card.
Suddenly, he raised his shoulders, they were now reaching his ears. Then he slowly started to sob, small delicate tears rolled down his rosy cheeks. Afterwards he did a dramatic turn, staring back at you with the most pitiful and vulnerable expression he could muster. The way desire and need blended perfectly in his eyes was seductive, though the pose he did was the one of an innocent maiden. Some strands of his bangs stuck to his forehead, and his lips were slightly parted. In that moment, he looked straight out of a painting, like an angel that descended upon the moral realm.
“Please..” Dazai began his act, mumbling in a meek tone, as if he was embarrassed of himself. “Fuck me.. I want it so bad.” The way he stressed the last two words was the peak of acting, he could win an Oscar with that one. It took you every resolve and self control you had to not throw him onto the table and fuck him. If you were to wait any longer, it was going to be a torture for you too. More tears flowed down his pretty face, those water droplets were like diamond shining in the sun light, emphasising his helplessness even more.
That man knew what he was doing and did it with passion, if he wants something he will get it, that’s what his body language told you. Which is why you especially want to go against it. “No is no, osamu, if you don’t finish this until dawn I’ll just leave and go drinking with chuuya.” You warned him, but it was more like a threat. He gasped a little, now crying a little louder than before. “Oh.. how cruel of you..! Can chuuya give you the things I can offer?” There was no answer to that question, you didn’t want to because you knew he could use it against you. Instead you gave him a little trust, enough to make his back arch. “AhHHh~ m-mhm..” the male moaned out, he did not hold back at all.
“go back to work.” You chuckled as you said, resting your chin on his shoulder again. “Hm.. mean..” and now he was pouting again, oh well, let’s see how long he can still play this game until he breaks. You weren’t going to be the first one to crumble. All you had to do was lay back and watch the play unfold. “Do as you wish, dazai, you have time until dawn.”

Theater Camp
james potter x fem!reader
Synopsis: james convinces you to go to theater camp with him. you secretly love it and you guys become close. it’s the final show of the summer and you’re putting on Moulin Rouge.
Genre: fluff
Authors Note: this came to me in a dream, also this will be on my AO3 if you prefer that
Warnings: spoilers for Moulin Rouge the musical
“SATINE??” you yell.
“Yes! I got Christian! Who’d you get y/n” James calls out happily.
“I got Satine. I didn’t even audition for her, I auditioned for Nini”, you reply.
“Well maybe you blew them away enough to get you a lead role.”
James was born to be a leading man. But you? You were terrified. This was the first time you’ve been casted in a lead role, and with a show as complex as this one. But you put the feelings behind you when you think about the idea that someone thought you were good enough to be a lead.
The weeks go by as you rehearse like crazy.
James is a natural. Christian is a perfect role for him. He’s off book by week 2, while you’re still struggling. He encourages you every day and never gives up.
You’ve been friends with James for years now so he knows exactly how to help you. But you’ve always been just that—friends. And that’s how you’d like to keep it. You didn’t want to mess up your friendship with The Marauders, even though Sirius and Remus were already dating. But they have been for years. This was different.
You see James’ talents really shine through this role. Like it was written for him. You kind of forget that you’re Y/N and James, and instead you’re Satine and Christian. Rehearsing Come What May made you legitimately cry. And you couldn’t help but laugh at James’ corny dance during Elephant Love Medley—which he did over and over to get it right.
But you pushed your feelings away and focused on being the best Satine you could be, and you were feeling quite happy with your performance. But the show was coming up quick and your nerves couldn’t help but rear their ugly heads.
Half hour to places and you’re panicking.
“I don’t know my lines!! I can’t remember anything!!” you yell out, “I can’t do this, I’m gonna freeze.”
Your friends are trying to calm you down while simultaneously getting ready.
“Where’s James?” one of them calls out, “he’s the only thing that’ll get her to relax. We all know you love him.”
The girls start laughing while you blush.
“What? No I don’t! We’re friends, have been for years. That’s it.”
They continue to laugh and you feel yourself get even more red. You start backing up towards the door to get some air.
“And even if I was in love with James—which I’m not—it wouldn’t matter anyway cause he doesn’t fancy me like that.”
The girls quiet their laughter into giggles as a voice speaks up behind you.
“Oi, y/n, you’re not?”
Shit. It was James. You try to act cool but you very clearly aren’t. You’re half dressed to go on, flushed red, and sweating from panic. But James. He looks perfect. That cheeky smile of his you can’t help but love covered his face as he leaned on the doorframe.
“You have a crush on me, y/n?” he smiles so brightly, “or was it…in love with me?”
He’s so cocky.
You cover your eyes with your hands as your face flushes scarlet. He grabs your wrists lightly.
“Don’t do that, you’ll mess up your makeup. We’re still going on.”
You get shoved back into reality when James says that. Suddenly you remember why you were panicking in the first place.
“James”, you say seriously, “I don’t know my lines.”
“Yes you do.” He replies, matter-of-factly.
“No I don’t. It’s gone. I can’t remember a thing.”
He leans down and kisses your forehead lightly.
“Baby you’re a firework.” He says softly.
He leaves you to finish getting ready and you feel different. Now instead of panicking about your lines, which you still aren’t convinced you know yet, you’re panicking about possibly dating your best friend.
Suddenly it’s showtime. You hear the beginning notes and you know it’s now or never. You get situated in your satin swing and wait for your time to sparkle.
You don’t understand how, but as soon as the lights hit you, you transform. You know every word, every beat, every step exactly how it’s performed. You transform into Satine. Then you look at James. He ogling at you, as his character is supposed to do, but you can’t help but think maybe he’s being for real.
The show goes on without a hitch. You and James feel so natural on the stage. You’re being playful and coy. Teasing and flirting as the characters do. The crowd is loving it. You find it extremely easy to pretend to fall in love with him.
By the time you die in his arms, you’re exhausted. And you can feel James’ tears fall onto your cheeks. He’s really selling it.
You finish the show and do your bows. After running off the stage you and James meet face to face. In a rush of adrenaline he grabs your face and kisses you. Not how he did in the show. But instead with so much passion and trust. He kissed you like he really meant it. And you kissed him back, melting into his lips.
You break apart and look at each other. Sweaty, tired, and out of breath. He smiles sweetly.
“Wait till we tell everyone back home.”

01:15 - What Did You Eat Yesterday?: The Granddaddy
Ben
And we're back. Finally, my time has come. [NiNi laughs] NiNi has finally set down some time for us to talk about my favorite show after they embarrassed me in the Clip Show.
We are finally talking about What Did You Eat Yesterday?
NiNi
We are. You must know by now, dear listeners, that this is the granddaddy. This is the show of all time for us, this is the yardstick by which things are measured. What Did You Eat Yesterday? is an article of faith for Ben and I.
Ben, why don't you tell the people what What Did You Eat Yesterday? is about?
Ben
What Did You Eat Yesterday? is a slice of life food drama from Japan that is about two gay men in their forties-approaching-50, and it's about the daily challenges of their life as they try to maintain a long-term relationship with each other, and grounded around the meals they share at their dinner table.
NiNi
So simple a description. So, somehow, deep and devastating a show.
Ben
NiNi, how about you try describing our leads in this show?
NiNi
Hoo! Okay, let's see! So our two main leads are Kakei Shiro, played by Nishijima Hidetoshi; and Yabuki Kenji, played by Uchino Seiyo. These two are legends of the stage and screen, and it shows in the show. There's a cast of fun characters that surrounds Shiro and Kenji.
At Shiro’s job—Shiro’s a lawyer—there is Mom-sensei, Mom-sensei’s son, and various other lawyers in the office. At Kenji's job at the hair salon, there is his boss, who is a serial philanderer; his wife who he runs the salon with; and a cast of other hairdressers and assorted hangers on. And then you've got their friends who steadily become more and more important to the show as they go along. Shiro's friend Kohinata and his partner Wataru, otherwise known as Gilbert. There are a lot of other characters around. There’s Shiro and Kenji's families, there's their neighbor, Koyama. There's so many, so many fantastic characters in this little show. Each of them so distinct, each of them so fully fleshed out and human in a lot of ways.
I don't know how to talk about this show. I love it so much. It goes so deep for me. Like I said, it's an article of faith, almost, and I just get a warm feeling when I think about it. When I watch it, when I see all the characters on it interact, from the intensely important characters like Shiro's parents, all the way down to the lady at the supermarket where Shiro and Kenji buy their groceries—who is Shiro's partner in keeping his food bills down by pointing to the sales without speaking to him. Ever.
[both laugh]
Ben
I love their dynamic. It's so funny.
To talk about What Did You Eat Yesterday?, let's talk about BL, and why What Did You Eat Yesterday? feels unique in relation to BL. In BL, you're in traditional romance. You got two pretty people. They looked at each other. They liked what they saw. And they gotta figure out if they can be together. In What Did You Eat Yesterday? we're past the figuring it out portion. They decided they want to be together and now they're navigating what that means. Unlike in a traditional BL, where your ongoing arc is, “Are these two going to finally kiss?” this show is structured episodically, where each episode is about something going on in their lives that they have to contend with, and then we move beyond that particular issue.
There is an ongoing throughline about these two coming to a greater understanding of each other, learning to love themselves better, building more intimate relationships with the people around them, and building their relationship. But that's so different from the rest of BL. What Did You Eat Yesterday? episodes, in a lot of ways, can stand on their own. You can go back for What Did You Eat Yesterday? and watch some of your favorite episodes individually in a way that I don't think is as accessible with a traditional romance.
NiNi
I think what it is is that it's a traditional situation comedy. So it's not necessarily a serialized story, although there are elements that you keep up with—runners that go through the story—it is more of a “There's a situation. They deal with the situation. Sometimes there are hijinks, sometimes it's more serious. There's always some kind of a heartwarming moment, and they always cook something because food is the center of their home.”
It's lovely and predictable in that way that you know what you're going to get in a What Did You Eat Yesterday? episode, but also, you never know how things are gonna turn for Shiro and Kenji. Not in the sense of, “Oh, are they gonna break up over this?” Not something like that. But you never know if this is the moment that one of them is going to have a revelation, or there's going to be a moving forward in their dynamic. You just never know if that's gonna happen. So there's parts of the show, particularly around Shiro’s very complicated relationship with the closet, that sometimes you think it's gonna zig and then actually it zags and you're like, “Oh, my God, Shiro is growing.”
It's so fun to watch, especially at my age, to know that you can still grow, and learn, and change, and learn to adjust and compromise for other people if you care enough to do so. You ain't dead yet. [laughs]
Ben
I think what makes this show special for me is it doesn't exist in the bubble, and the issues that they have are specific to gay men.
The very first issue that we encounter for them is how closeted Shiro is compared to Kenji, who is a flamboyant hairdresser. Kenji and Shiro's first fight that we experienced, Kenji brags to one of his clients about his boyfriend, and he gets a little racy about it. And then later, when Kenji and Shiro are walking down the street together, they encounter that client, who comments on the details of their relationship that she gleaned from Kenji and embarrasses Shiro, who is deeply-closeted and doesn't want people walking around talking about his business. Kenji gets really upset about this and begins to cry and asks, “Everyone else gets to talk about their families and everyone they love that's important to them. Why am I not allowed to?” And Shiro doesn't really have a great response to that, because he knows he's in the wrong, and so instead he just makes some of Kenji's favorite food. [laughs] Which is one of the ongoing ways they solve their issues.
So much of this show is about the long term impacts of the closet and homophobia on gay men, and the ways it informs how we make bonds with each other. We mentioned Kohinata and Wataru earlier. They only meet Kohinata because Shiro has an encounter at the grocery store with a woman who also wants to take advantage of a sale on watermelon, but the watermelon is too big for their refrigerators, and so they decide to split it. They become friends. And, in time, they introduced Shiro to one of their other gay friends. And they do that thing that's kind of annoying from straight people. They're like, “You're both gay! Go, you know, mingle with each other.” And like, that's super awkward as hell, but it ends up being genuinely helpful. They do actually become friends. They start hanging out as couples together.
There's a really good examination about the fact that Kenji is not exactly Shiro's type per se, but Kohinata is, and Kenji gets worried that if he leaves Shiro alone with Kohinata, something might happen. And they have a really sort of ugly breakdown where Kenji admits this jealousy is in him, but he feels like he's wrong in that regard because he once cheated on a partner, so he doesn't have the moral high ground here. But it's still something he's deathly terrified of because he loves Shiro so much and doesn't want to lose him.
What's so special about this show is when they introduce something interesting in an episode, they're able to use that later, where you benefit from having seen that interaction earlier, but it doesn't matter if you don't remember all of it. You don't have to remember all those details about how he and Kayoko met to appreciate that they are grocery friends now, who take advantage of sales together and like to cook things together when there's a way to benefit. There's a beautiful examination of the mundane in this show that is really heartwarming.
12:08 - Favorite Episodes
NiNi
I wanna get a little bit into this idea that you had about the episodic nature of this and maybe do a little fun thing. Do you have a favorite episode of What Did You Eat Yesterday?
Ben
Depends on my mood at the time.
NiNi
What are some of your tops?
Ben
I think, in the first season, I really like the Christmas episode, they host Kohinata and Wataru. We had already seen Shiro make that meal for Kenji as the first thing he cooked for him. He tried to make the best dishes he could make the first night Kenji moved in with him, and that just sort of became their Christmas tradition because it just happened to be the holiday season. And I liked him sharing that with other gay people. That's also the episode where Shiro says plainly that he wants to take Kenji home so that his parents can see that he's not a sad person because Kenji's at his side. And that gets me.
We've seen the Christmas moments three times in this show now, because we have Kenji first moving in, their dinner with Wataru and them, and then we had Christmas again in the second season. But in the second season, they end up changing their menu because of their changing health needs. That was really well earned because we, the audience, were primed for another Christmas meal and we're excited to see it, but it was really lovely to see them unpack that their Christmas traditions are something that they have control over. This is really significant for me as a queer person, because we have to create our own traditions.
We don't get to have all of the same ones that straight people do. Some of us are not necessarily welcome with our partners around our families. We don't necessarily go home to see them. We often do events with other people at the holiday season. One of mine is getting other local homos together to watch the seminal classic by Rob Williams, Make the Yuletide Gay, a not great film from 2009, but one of my favorite films.
The other episode I really like is from the first season, the episode where Kenji invites his friends to meet Shiro to talk about adult adoption, particularly because we had follow up on that episode in the second season. Adult adoption was the right choice for Kenji's friends, but Kenji later in the second season refuses to be adopted by Shiro, because he wants to hold out for marriage. Once Shiro adopts him, marriage is not possible, and that is what he wants. For pragmatic reasons, older couples have to choose adult adoption to protect the younger partner from family members that the older partner does not like. But adult adoption is not marriage. Gay people want to partner with the people that are most important to them, like other people do, and it is kind of shitty that we have to do all this roundabout stuff just to protect the people we care about.
What about you? Do you have any favorite episodes of this show?
NiNi
I always like the episodes where Kenji cooks. Because Shiro is the one who does the majority of the cooking for the two of them. It's how he shows he cares, and he enjoys it, and he's good at it. And Kenji is always incredibly appreciative of the meals that Shiro makes.
But I always like when Kenji cooks for Shiro. Sometimes he cooks for himself because Shiro was not there, and those will be times he indulges himself and makes something that he knows that Shiro wouldn't necessarily approve of because it's unhealthy. But I always like when Kenji cooks specifically for Shiro, because he's so deliberate and thoughtful about it. There's one episode in particular when he makes some kind of soup for Shiro when he's sick.
Ben
Okay, that one is so funny because Shiro’s so independent, Kenji never gets the chance to take care of Shiro. So the way we will run around excited about BL tropes, like, “Oh, someone's sick. Oh, let's get some lukewarm water. It's time to fucking get this boy a sponge bath!”
[both laugh]
That's the moment that Kenji is having. Shiro is really sick and so has to be cared for. And so he's really excited to make a simple meal for Shiro and take care of him. But he's such a nervous wreck about it. We get to watch Shiro listening in the whole time. Like, “What the hell is happening up there?”
NiNi
[laughs] Shiro is so particular about everything and Kenji knows it, and so it's going a little bit badly. It's a little bit of a disaster. He pulls it together in the end.
Ben
Kenji actually did a good job.
NiNi
Kenji always feels like Shiro does so much for him, and Shiro doesn't let him do things for Shiro, and so he will always grab the opportunity to do something. He's always like, “Oh, we need something? I'll run, I'll go get it. I'll do this. I'll do that.”
Ben
Kenji cares about Shiro, so he takes care of their home.
NiNi
There is a situation where the washing machine overflows and part of the apartment gets flooded. Kenji notices that this is a thing that is continuously happening, and he goes out and buys a hose and says, “Well, you know, next time this happens, you can just drain it into the sink rather than it flooding the thing.” And that's when Shiro stops and he looks around at all the things that Kenji does to keep their home running, and he starts to cry. It's a very heartwarming moment, because you don't get the sense that Shiro takes Kenji for granted at all. That's not what this is about.
But it's just one of those moments where you really stop and take stock of how loved you are and it just overwhelms you. And that's the moment that he was having. But that moment was so earned by all the moments that had come before, where you see all the small ways that Kenji tries to take care of Shiro, and how Shiro feels like it's his responsibility to take care of himself and Kenji. And he doesn't like it when he doesn't feel like he's taking care of them. Well, he's realized at this point that, “Yeah, Kenji can take care of me, too in some big and small ways, and I knew he loved me, but I really feel like he loves me.” It's just a really lovely moment.
19:22 - The Show that Keeps Coming Back
Ben
This is our fourth outing with What Did You Eat Yesterday? I've been pretty close to this show the whole time it's been airing. What's it been like for you seeing the show come back three times now?
NiNi
I could watch this show forever. That's honestly how I feel about it. And the way that the show is set up, as long as Nishijima and Uchino want to keep doing it, I think we could get this show basically forever. It feels like meeting up with old friends every time you see a new bit of it, whether it's the special or the movie or new episodes.
It always feels like you have these friends, Shiro and Kenji. They've been living their lives. You haven't seen them for a while and then, boom. They’re here, and you're so happy to see them and you just want to know everything that's been going on with them. You wanna sit up at night and chat and catch up with their lives. Every time the show comes back, that's how I feel about it. I can't wait to sit down and catch up with Shiro and Kenji, and see what's going on with them now.
I feel like there's more stuff that maybe you're more aware of regarding the cultural significance of the show and what it means for Japan to be doing a show like this. So why don't you get into some of that stuff?
Ben
So the first show airs, and it's decently popular. Like it performs well in its time slot, which is one of the late night time slots. “Here's a quiet, easy to watch show. Now go to bed. You have to work in the morning.”
Uchino and Nishijima are veteran actors. Both of them have well over 100 credits. They are very successful actors who are sought out and are busy. And it was really surprising that they agreed to be part of this. I cannot overstate how significant it is for queer TV… talented, veteran actors are willing to play gay characters in a gay way, and are really proud of that work, and want to keep coming back and doing it. Uchino and Nishijima say plainly all the time: They are longtime fans of the manga and were very determined to bring it to air. They worked to rearrange their schedules to make sure that this show could keep coming back.
[Nishijima] is an Oscar winning actor now. He's becoming more internationally famous because of Drive My Car. So it's not like these guys are getting less busy. Both of these guys are so good.
If you've only seen Uchino play Kenji, you owe it to yourself to see Uchino play a veteran Japanese historical military leader or a fucking yakuza. He is so good. You get a small flash of that when he wears the suit in the movie, and in I think episode 3 of Season 2 where he flashes the macho thing. That's Uchino teasing the rest of us about the rest of the work he's done. He's played some intensely macho characters in his career, so it's really fun seeing him in particular playing someone as flamboyant as Kenji.
What's so surprising is the show keeps coming back. Like season one, we go from the fight in episode one, where Shiro yells at Kenji for even telling someone else that he's in a relationship with him, to them meeting Shiro's parents in episode 12, and Shiro reassuring Kenji that he doesn't want either of them to die, that they're gonna eat well and live a long, happy life together. I would have been okay. It would have still been one of my favorite shows if we just ended at episode 12.
The arc of season one is so strong of Shiro letting go a little bit and not being so stiff. He can't give Kenji all the things he maybe wants, but he can be a little less stiff about some of these things. And then they announced the fucking New Year special and I'm like, what the fuck is going on? And they're like, “Oh, yes. We’re going to a whole new year special.” What's it about? “Well, Shiro's really busy at work, so he's not gonna be home a lot.” And I'm like, oh my God. [laughs] This is so much fun.
We got to see Kenji and Shiro dealing with separation anxiety and missing each other. That was so much fun. We got to see Kenji trying to play the role of brave housewife for a while. We got to see Kohinata and Wataru's internal dynamic for a bit. That was a really fascinating thing for us to get to experience. We got to see Kenji tell Wataru straight up, “Stop testing your partner. They're going to fail eventually. And then what? Stop holding back. You ain't brave. You ain't doing nothing.” Great stuff.
And then we get the movie! And I was not expecting the movie either, and the movie ended up being heavier than I expected. The movie ends up having Shiro's parents regress and say they don't actually want Kenji to come over anymore. And that was a huge pain point that played out in season 2. I was not expecting them to hold on to that as long as they did. The delivery from Nishijima when he tells Kenji, “I know you're hurting over this,” was so good.
24:57 - Season 2: Mortality, Family, and Hets
Ben
Let's talk about Season 2, NiNI. What were the big things for season 2 that stuck out to you as sort of the big ideas?
NiNi
There was a definite throughline about mortality. There's a lot of death, and discussions around death, and inheritance, and family, and the next generation, and what happens when you are gone. That really sort of permeated the second season. But not in a melancholy way, more in like a contemplative way, a way that makes you think about who are the people who are important to you? What do they need? What do you want to share with them? What do you want them to have of you when you're gone? What matters about your relationship with them now? Those are the kinds of themes that the show used that runner to explore.
Themes of moving forward and growing up in certain ways, because one of the things about Shiro that comes to the fore at work, Shiro is the kind of person who has avoided too much responsibility at work. He's avoided being promoted. He took the job that he took because he would be able to leave work on time and go home and have dinner.
This is culturally related as well, because he's seen as a little feckless at work because he's not married, because Shiro’s not out at work, at all. He is becoming more out in other aspects of his life, but he is completely not out at work. So as far as anybody at work is concerned, Shiro’s a single man, and the idea of a single man of Shiro's age in Japanese society and culture. It's seen as him being sort of flighty and irresponsible, which is the opposite of Shiro, which is just so funny to me.
One of the things that he does this season, because of the nature of what they're trying to explore through this idea of mortality, is that he starts taking on more responsibility at work. His boss tells him that she wants to retire and she wants him to run the law firm. This is something he would have never agreed to, never even considered before now, but because he's in a place where he feels stable and secure in his life, things are good with him and Kenji, he is coming to an accord about things with his parents. He feels stable, he feels like his life is good, and so he's more willing to take on that additional responsibility at work.
I found that to be a really interesting part of this season, how the discussions of mortality threaded its way through the season and manifested in different ways. What about you? What are some of the things that you took away from this season?
Ben
Before I get into that, I really want to follow up on one of the things you mentioned about Shiro taking on this responsibility at work. This was a runner because it comes up about four times this season. I like that the thing that finally pushes Shiro over the edge is Kenji taking on more responsibility at work. Once he realized that Kenji was going to be a manager, and wasn't going to be home at normal times anymore, and was embracing this new responsibility in his life, that inspired Shiro to also do that as well. I really like that it was Kenji just accepting this sort of thing and being brave about it, that pushed Shiro. And I like how Shiro did it because he wanted to also help Osamu.
You get the sense that Shiro intentionally took a job in this law firm because he wanted to work in a small law firm where there wasn't a lot of room for growth and promotion, where they wouldn’t be constantly expecting him to take on more responsibility and deal with juniors coming up underneath him. He wanted to work in a small family law firm where the mom had a son who was intended to inherit and take charge of the firm so he wouldn't be expected to. You get the sense that he was surprised that he was asked to take on partnership in this, but it ends up being something that's positive for all of them because he likes and respects Osamu. But Osamu's passion is criminal defense law, which is not very lucrative for their firm, but it's what Osamu's passionate about.
We got to see Shiro and Osamu work together this season, and that this is not something that Osamu is being, sort of half-assed about. He got super worked up for one of their clients. I think in the first season, I thought of him as maybe a little lazy, being able to take it easy because it's his mom’s firm and Shiro’s really determined, but it was really nice to see that Osamu had his own backbone as a lawyer about things that were really important to him, that he wanted to do professionally. And some of that involves him not necessarily being hands on with the firm as he's not as good about these things.
I really liked that Shiro is able to extend his tendency to want to help people in a more accessible way this season. He gets so scared about the gay thing that he just ends up hiding from so many people. I really enjoyed seeing Shiro be more flexible this season. He took the fact that his vision is getting worse almost completely in stride. [laughs] Even though he was so grumpy about having to spend a bunch of money on lenses.
I actually liked the through line about how they're getting older and things are changing. I liked that the first episode this season was about them having to change grocery stores because Nakamuraya closed, and that was devastating for Shiro. That was the grocery store that he liked and trusted the most, and he had to go and find a new grocery. Thankfully, we find the same clerk at that one who is still helping them out. Speaking of her, we mentioned her earlier. I love that she has a completely distinct relationship with Kenji and Shiro, where Kenji’s like, “She talks to me all the time! She's great!” and Shiro’s just like, “What? She only ever glares at me.”
[both laugh]
NiNi
She speaks to him one time in the entire show.
Ben
I love it.
NiNi
That's when he goes to the grocery store and she sees him in his glasses for the first time and he's self-conscious about them. And when she sees him, he takes them off really quickly and she goes, “I think they really suit you,” and that was it.
Ben
I love it. [laughs] I almost cried! I was like, yes!
NiNi
I was like that's your friend! She cares about you! [laughs]
Ben
I think she also commented once this season that the fish is actually good at the new store. She actually protected Shiro once. She was being told to go around and mark a bunch of sketchy food off that needed to go, and she saw Shiro eyeing her with the sale button, and she didn't put it on the food that she didn't think was gonna be safe for them to eat because she knew Shiro wouldn't take it if it wasn't on sale. [laughs]
I really liked in this season how Shiro was really trying to accept that things were changing in their lives. I love Shiro accepting that Kenji was going to take on this role of manager after the whole thing with the philanderer friend of Kenji's, whose wife, now that their daughter has graduated, was like, “I'm leaving this man. I can't be with him anymore.” And then he decides to fuck off to Vietnam, and so Kenji's left running the store.
I like that Shiro accepted that they're getting older and that their food needs and eating habits are changing. That Shiro, despite his determination to save up as much as possible for their futures by being really pragmatic about their food budget, and probably other things in their lives as well, because he and Kenji never seemed to buy a lot of new things or go shopping a lot. Shiro increased their food budget in response to inflation and in response to the fact that Kenji’s cholesterol was maybe a little high, and wanting to make sure that Kenji ate the right food so that he would stay healthy.
I really liked the final conversation with Shiro's parents where they talk about how they want to make sure that Kenji is in their will, that they accept him as Shiro’s other half. That they chided him not to fuck things up with Kenji.
NiNi
That they found a columbarium that would have enough space so that Kenji could be with them.
Ben
Right, and Kenji took this as the peace offering it was from Shiro's mom and started thinking about himself as the beloathed daughter-in-law. [laughs]
NiNi
It's so funny because this is basically Shiro's mom saying literally over my dead body, but in a nice way, like.
[both laugh]
“Over my dead body,” but that's the acceptance? It was just so funny because all the things she's talking about, the columbarium, the inheritance, it's all well after I'm dead. But she's fine with it? Basically? This is the way that she's chosen to accept him. And he immediately understands that and he takes it absolutely in the spirit in which it's meant.
Ben
I love the way that they do it is the only way that Shiro and his family could. “Well, it's very cost effective for us to buy into this together right now. They're having a sale, so.”
I really like that his parents were very stern with him about it, but they're like, “We're not going to move to the nursing home that's closer to you because it's more expensive. “We will deal with the hassle of being further from you because you're 50 now. We don't know how much longer we're going to be around, but if we're here for a long time, we want to make sure that there's something for you to have to make sure that you're okay as well.” And I liked how Shiro had to learn to accept that from his parents, not as a knock against him for being a bad son, but as for them trying to do right by him as his parents. I thought that was a really significant move from the show, considering how much the idea is that the kids are supposed to put everything they can into taking care of their parents as they get older. I thought it was really inspired for aging parents to be like, “No, we wanna make sure that we are not a burden to you in our final twilight years.”
NiNi
The relationship between Shiro and his parents is so fascinating from the very beginning of the show up until this bit that we've seen so far. Not just in terms of the way that they are learning and growing, and finding ways to accept who their son is, and he in his own way, finding his ways to accept who they are without losing himself.
The structure of their relationship is also so culturally interesting to me. It just feels very Japanese. I don't know how else to explain it, the way that they deal with each other, the way that his dad never lets Shiro pay for anything for them, just things like that. His parents are so traditional. For a long part of the show, his mother would only wear kimono. It's only later on in the show that she stops wearing kimono all the time.
Ben
It's a really subtle thing with the costuming choice, but every time that she takes a step forward, she's not wearing traditional clothes.
NiNi
The dynamic is also interesting because Kenji's relationship with his family is so different than Shiro's relationship with his family.
Ben
Oh, let's talk about that episode, since you brought up Kenji's mom and sisters.
NiNi
So Kenji is the only son of a single mother, and he has two younger sisters. His family is very comfortable with Kenji being gay, with everything around that. He is very open with his family, he talks to them about Shiro all the time, but still his family have never met Shiro. With all the death-flagging that was going on around this season, his mom was just like. “Oh well, I, I want to meet your Shiro,” and he immediately starts panicking. He's like, “Are you dying?”
So they have the meet up. Shiro picks this really nice restaurant for them to meet up. He's very considerate and thoughtful about how he chooses the restaurant in terms of what distance they'll have to go, and he wants it to be a nice experience.
Ben
It’s also the restaurant that Oo-sensei took him to the first time when he started working at the firm.
NiNi
Yep, he picks the restaurant with a lot of things in mind, basically. And so they have this lovely meal, and then Kenji's mom explains why she wanted to meet him. A friend of hers, her son died, and she started thinking about what would happen if Kenji died and Kenji's like, “What the hell?” and she's like, “No, no, no. Just listen to me.” But basically, she didn't want it to be a situation where, if anything happened to Kenji, that Shiro would not be able to stand with them as Kenji's family. So she figured at the very least if they met once, then they're not strangers and Shiro has the right, then, to stand with them if anything happens to Kenji, and mourn him as part of the family, basically.
Ben
That was so touching. I legit sobbed after that episode ended. [laughs] I'm getting hot right now thinking about it. That was such an incredible episode. Oh my God.
NiNi
It was so much. Kenji's family is so the opposite of Shiro’s family. They're teasing and they're chattering a mile a minute.
Ben
They're leaving the restaurant and his sisters and trying to take the receipt from Kenji so that they can pay part of their share and he's like, “Go away. Stop it. I'm the oldest. Let me do this.”
NiNi
It's a very different dynamic than Shiro’s family, and it's not one that Shiro’s necessarily entirely comfortable with yet, because he's so much more stoic than Kenji is. But he is starting to lean into it a little bit. He's still kind of on the outside of things in that regard, but they're teasing him and he's doing his little shy smile thing. He's not entirely comfortable with them yet, but you can see how he will possibly get there. I don't think he'll ever be the one who's teasing back, but he will become comfortable with them. You can see it. And that's what Kenji's mom wanted. That's the ball whe wanted to start rolling. She wants Shiro to feel like family with them.
There's so much of that in this season. This season is just emotional hits after emotional hits in that regard. There's so much about family, and caring for people. Like, thoughtfully caring for people, not just absentmindedly caring for people, which is a big thing for me. Putting thought into how you care about somebody, and how you show that care for somebody, it's a big, big thing for me and something I enjoy seeing.
Ben
I really like how this season made me get super invested in a bunch of heterosexual characters. Like I ended up super invested in Osamu and his desire to become a prosecutorial educator for criminal defense attorneys. That was a big deal for him that he really wanted to take on this educator role, even if it didn't pay well, because it was really important to.
I got weirdly invested in the sort of flaky hairdresser. The other guy who works at Kenji's shop, and his relationship with his girlfriend who can't cook.
NiNi
Incredible. So incredible. I love that so much.
Ben
There are so many layers to this whole thing.
NiNi
And the fact that you thought it was just a one-off thing, but then later in the season it comes back.
Ben
Oh my God. So, Kenji is invited to hang out with one of his coworkers, and Kenji at first is nervous. Like, “Is this hot young guy trying to get me into his house? I'm a married woman, sir!” and he's super nervous about what the hell is going on? But it's—like his colleague’s really intent on him coming over, and he talks about his girlfriend, about how they didn't work out because she couldn't really cook that well. He didn't like her food, and then one night he just got tired of it and made a really nice pasta, and she got super upset about this because she tries so hard to fill this role that she feels like she's supposed to, but she's just not a good cook. And she's never gotten the experience of someone enjoying her food, and they just didn't work out.
I'm like, okay, well, that was a really cool story, but it’s a little bit sad. And then five episodes later in episode 9, we get the reveal that he missed her and they tried to work it out. And he tried to teach her how to cook more effectively. And then he decided to settle on baking. Somebody who’s such a stickler for details as her, “salt to taste” as an instruction does not work for her. So she picks up baking and ends up being really good at it, and then she has this moment where she gets to react to the first time of seeing someone smile and enjoy the food she made. And, besties, I ugly cried.
NiNi
It was a Capital M Moment.
Ben and Nini [in unison]
It was so good! [both laugh]
NiNi
I wept. I wept! It was so beautiful. And you now see that they figured it out. They figured it out through food!
Ben
The biggest thing about What Did You Eat Yesterday? is it is the kindest show.
43:10 - WDYEY is So Gay and Found Family
Ben
What Did You Eat Yesterday? is so explicitly gay. Everything about this show is gay. The fact that Shiro doesn't want to be a super successful, high-powered lawyer is unusual. He does not fit the mold of a traditional Japanese man, despite all of the other things about him. He's just so unusual as a Japanese man that despite all of his attempts to closet himself, he ends up looking weirder to people the longer this goes on. It's so awful for guys like Shiro.
For Kenji, everybody's gonna clock his ass right away, but Shiro’s not going to get clocked right away. And so often the fact that he doesn't get clocked makes him seem creepy to people. Like, there's that whole moment in the first season with the apprentice lawyer that gets assigned to him for a while, where that interaction ends up kind of a mess because Shiro's misreading signals from her, doesn't want her glomming onto him too much, and ends up accidentally really upsetting the girl by making her think he was trying to hit on her.
Oo-sensei is like, “Shiro, what are you doing? You've been a bachelor the 20 years I've known you. What the hell is going on? Please do better.” [laughs] And it sucks because he's doing so good, but he won't tell her exactly that.
Oh my God. Speaking of her. I love her so much. She got Shiro a portable induction burner.
NiNi
I want one. I absolutely want one of those.
Ben
They are so fucking useful. You can cook stuff on your dinner table without worrying that the whole fucking table’s gonna burst into flames.
She lies to Shiro that she got it as a gift from someone else, and she's just trying to downsize some of her stuff, cause she's realized she's getting old and has too much shit in her house. And so she's like, “Yeah, Shiro, I need you to take care of this for me so that I can get rid of it.” “Well, I guess if I have to do a favor, it would be rude not to accept the gift under these conditions.” I love her so much. She can do no wrong. She is my favorite.
NiNi
She knows him so well. I wouldn't be surprised if she has already dialed in to what's going on.
Ben
She absolutely knows.
NiNi
I think she knows he's gay.
Ben
She also knows that he eats with someone. She asked very politely in the first season if he has someone to share meals with, and Shiro said yes, and she just said very good. That was very tactful, ma'am. I approve.
Let’s talk about Kyoko a little bit, because we haven't talked about Kayoko much.
NiNi
I was just about to say all the women around Shiro are so great and Kayoko is definitely one of the greatest. Sorry, before we get into her, I just love the way that she ran into Kenji at the grocery store and acted like she was meeting BTS or something. [laughs]
Ben
She was so excited to meet Kenji, and Kenji's like, “Huh? What do you want?” I also like that Kenji was low-key kind of bitchy [laughs] at the grocery store with this weird woman rolling up on him. We see the version of Kenji where he is home with the man he loves and is loud about it all the time, or we see him at work where he is ON for his clientele. It was so refreshing to see Kenji as just another dude in a grocery store being like, “Why the fuck is this woman looking at me like that?”
NiNi
[Laughs] It was so delightful. I love Kayoko as a character. She doesn't pop up a whole lot, but every time she does, it's truly a delight.
Her main story in this season is she and her husband finally, finally getting to meet Kenji, and they're both so excited about it. And it's this whole event. When Shiro and Kenji go over there, Kayoko’s husband is talking Kenji's ear off and wants to know everything. Everything! He wants to know how they met. He wants to know everything about them. They're just so enthused about their friend's partner, because they know that this is somebody that Shiro loves, and they love Shiro. So they want to love whoever Shiro loves.
Ben
It's really fascinating with the way some of these dynamics play out. Kohinata and Shiro have been friends with Kayoko and her husband for years. Kohinata even longer. But they've never met either of their partners. Shiro has talked so much about Kenji that they feel they know him. But it's notable that it seems like there's this sort of line they can't cross and say, “I would like to meet him.” There appears to be some sort of etiquette line that everyone's toeing here, where they want to meet Kenji. It's impolite to ask. It means that there's some sort of gap in their closeness.
But they are just so happy that Kenji's finally showing up. They have this little dinner party together. And what is his name? Let me pull up his name real quick. Tominaga-san. He is so enamored with Kenji. He is resting his hand on his chin. He is batting his eyelashes at Kenji, he is like, “Please tell us. Tell us the story of how you met Shiro.”
It was fun for us as the audience because Kenji immediately begins retelling the story we heard Kenji say to Wataru and Kohinata in season one, and so we know the story, and so we can roll our eyes with Shiro when he says he looks like Kaiba Ryu again. And Shiro’s like, “Okay, whatever, bro.”
[both laugh]
City Hunter. It was so much fun.
One of the things I really like this season: we got a sense of the relationship between Wataru and Kohinata, that Wataru had a crush on Kohinata when Wataru was still very much a minor, and Kohinata basically refused to acknowledge it for like five to eight years because he thought it was inappropriate. That Wataru was so gay that he was basically disowned by his own family. That's a really painful thing for the two of them. I was really glad that we got some insight into those details. I also like that Shiro and Kenji were doing the math on their relationship and they were like, “Wait, hold the fuck up, bro.”
NiNi
They were like, “Hold the phone. What did you? What?” He's like, “No, no, no. Nothing happened until he was old enough.” And they're all like, “But still!”
[both laugh]
That is something that felt very gay to me.
Ben
That was very real. I was like, “Ohh, gurl.”
NiNi
I have friends who are with people that they met when they were in high school, who were much older and they're still with them now. Now that they're in their late 30s and 40s it’s not so scandalous, but they've been together a long time.
Ben
Yeah, absolutely.
NiNi
That felt very gay to me.
50:54 - Let’s Talk About The Food
NiNi
This show is so good! It's so enjoyable, and we haven't even started talking about the food yet. Oh my God. The food on this show.
Ben
What are some of the favorite things you've seen made on the show?
NiNi
Mmmm…Shiro did something. He made, I think it was a version of khao man gai with chicken thighs in the rice cooker. I looked at that and I immediately thought, “I have got to try that.” That and the sushi pizza.
Ben
I have made Shiro's lasagna.
NiNi
How was it?
Ben
It's very good. His steps are really traditional. I think that's the big thing I learned when I've been copying some of his stuff. Shiro’s cooking food that you would find in like a basic recipe you would find somewhere else. What Shiro’s really good at is balancing his time for all the dishes he needs to make so that you have all of the four or five side dishes he wants to have every time you sit down, which I don't like to do. That's too many dishes. [laughs]
NiNi
That's very much Japanese cooking, though.
Ben
Five different bowls per person. Hell to the no. I am a Creole food home cook. It's all going in one fucking pot.
NiNi
[laughs] They do some one pot stuff sometimes, though. It's really good.
Ben
They do! Like, they have curry.
NiNi
They have curry and the same thing, the same khao man gai that I was just talking about as well. That was all done in the rice cooker, basically.
Ben
I liked that pasta that Kayoko made. I haven't made it yet, but I think about that one every time it's hot. I really liked that slapped together sushi that Shiro put together when Kenji's friends were coming over.
NiNi
That was good. I am also, like Shiro, not good at hot oil, so I paid very close attention to the tempura recipe to see if maybe I would have the wherewithal and the bravery to try it at some point.
Ben
I like that Shiro, despite being really determined about his own skills, how easily he collaborates with other people in the kitchen. I thought Shiro would be the kind of cook who was difficult to cook around, but he shares space in his kitchen so easily with Kayoko and Kohinata and Kenji when they help him out. Shiro admits that he's not very comfortable cooking with oil. Like, he's not very good at doing tempura, and he let Kayoko teach him when they hung out again. I like that he's willing to learn from other people.
I liked in the movie when Kohinata and Wataru's fridge went out, and they brought a bunch of food over to them, they had like a mini feast and brought some stuff for them to save. They invited Kayoko over to help them make some stuff. In this season, they were like, we really want to get these special type of cheesy pancakes and Kohinata and he are just working through the recipe together, which let us have a really cool moment where Wataru seems like he's also starting to mellow out a little bit. He's just vibing with Kenji and they're gossiping about their boyfriends with each other.
NiNi
I love that demon twink.
Ben
[Laughs] He is a demon twink. He's like, “Is Shiro turning 50?” He convinces his well meaning rich boyfriend to send like a whole party package to them with a big ass balloon saying congratulations on 50.
NiNi
I don't know how well meaning Kohinata was? Because in that same episode, where they're making the pancakes, he says, “I'm so sorry about the 50 balloon,” and he looks Shiro dead in the eye in this kind of way. [laughs]
Ben
But that's not Kohinata being aggressive. That's Kohinata being alarmingly earnest. He very much needs to see you forgive him in that moment. It's the same thing that happened when Wataru kicked him out with the clams thing.
NiNi
The way that I read it, because Kohinata is very into his fitness, right? He looks good. He's very toned and muscular. He exercises a lot. He's got a great body. He doesn't look anything like whatever age he is. And while Shiro looks good for his age, Shiro does not look like Kohinata. And Kohinata’s very proud of his body. He shows it off, like the things that he wears, and all those kinds of things. So I just thought there was just him being a little bitchy as well, but in a nice way because he's Kohinata.
Ben
I’m gonna think about that. I’m gonna rewatch it and see how I feel about it with that in mind. I don't think that's what he's doing. I don't think that's who he is, but I’m gonna think about it.
NiNi
But yeah, it's not just the food. The food always looks good and I'm always like, “I gotta try that. I gotta try that. I gotta try that.” But just the process of watching them cook in this show, the way that it's filmed, it feels very comfortable. It feels like you could actually make these meals. It doesn't feel over complicated. It doesn't feel stressful. It feels like just this calm time in the kitchen and it makes you feel like you could do it, too.
Ben
We've talked to Japanese friends of ours that mention that the food Shiro makes is actually very simple and normal for Japanese people. He's not doing anything spectacular with the food, but that's also, I think, part of the charm. He's doing something really normal really earnestly every day as a way to let his partner know that he still matters to him.
56:36 - Final Thoughts (And A Moment to Drag Nobu)
Ben
This is my favorite show, and it will probably always end up being my favorite show. I say a lot that as much as I like BL, I like the silly little stories about gay boys falling in love with each other. I really do appreciate stories about gay boys staying together. That's why I'm really glad that we're seeing more sequels. We talked about this in an earlier episode this year, I believe, how we feel about sequels, and I do want them to keep trying to tell stories about gay people trying to make their lives work. I really like that this show keeps coming back and has more things to say—that it feels like everyone grew between both shows.
By the end of season 2, we know that Shiro and Kenji have been together for at least eight years. I really like how they feel older. It's been almost five years since the first show released, and Nishijima and Uchino have changed in that time, and it was really cool to see the two of them exploring what it means to get older through these characters as well. There is room in this genre to tell stories about beloved couples growing together, and I am so glad that we have such a high bar of a show to refer to when we tell people we want that.
NiNi
You're talking about having this show to refer to, and refer to it you do, sir.
Ben
I do.
[both laugh]
NiNi
One of the things that I really enjoyed about this show is watching other shows come behind it in the same spirit, but not trying to do the exact same thing. Two in particular that really have felt like they came off the spirit of this show were Our Dining Table and She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat. I want to see more shows in this general vein.
Ben
We called episode 6 of Tokyo in April Is… the What Did You Eat Yesterday? homage episode. There's a moment in I Became the Main Role of a BL Drama that we called the What Did You Eat Yesterday? moment where we thought that one actor was channeling Uchino's performance as Kenji when he was enjoying the curry that he was eating.
NiNi
As you said that, watching Kenji eat the food is almost as much fun as watching Shiro prepare the food.
Ben
We got some manga insights from our friend, Turtles. We were hoping to bring her on for this episode, but she's so busy. I love you, girl, but we gotta find a better time to work with you. She talked about how when they first moved in together—they didn't capture this in the show—Kenji was not as animated about enjoying Shiro's food, and Shiro got a little bit stressed about that, because Shiro's trying to communicate that he cares about Kenji through the food and he wasn't receiving a lot of feedback for that. Kenji picks up on this and starts being more animated and more forthright about enjoying the food because he knows it's important to Shiro.
Speaking of partners recognizing what's important to Shiro, let's talk about that motherfucker that Shiro used to live with.
NiNi
Oh my God. Nobu. Oh my God, what the hell?
Ben
I hate that man so much.
NiNi
He's so cruel. It is shitty behavior—absolutely shitty behavior—to not acknowledge and be grateful for somebody cooking for you. I don't care if you like the food or not. If somebody puts effort into cooking for you, you at the very least say thank you.
Ben
And when you use a shared kitchen, you clean up after yourself, goddamn.
NiNi
Cannot stand that character. The actor that they got to play him was so good, though, I really hated his face. Like—
[both laugh]
Ben
It’s the same episode we talked about earlier with the washing machine continually getting clogged and not draining properly. This happened years ago when Nobu was still living with Shiro. Nobu didn't offer to help at all. He was just like, “Clean this up right away before you cause problems for the people underneath us and they want us to pay for it.” And it's like, bro, this is his fucking house. And then he's like, “Whatever, I'm leaving. I'm gonna get me some chicken.” And I'm like, brah, you going to Popeyes right now? Come on now.
NiNi
And you're not even going to the Popeyes for the two of us.
Ben
That's the thing, too! It's not like he realized that Shiro was gonna be dealing with a pretty serious headache, and he's like, “Well, I'm gonna go get some cleaning supplies, and I'm gonna pick up some chicken on the way back.” He comes back like, like, “Oh, so you're still dealing with this. I'm hungry. You need to make some food, too.” I hate that man, so much.
NiNi
It really gives you an understanding, though, of how much Shiro has grown, because part of Shiro’s growing has been learning to love and accept himself. And you could tell in that flashback that Shiro did not love himself, and how much Kenji becoming a part of his life has encouraged him to love himself.
One of the things that I noticed about the flashback with Nobu is how he shrank. He didn't argue with him. He was thinking things in his head, but he didn't argue with Nobu. He just kind of shrank away, and he would never do that with Kenji. He will always fight it out with Kenji, and I really appreciate that. Not only does he feel comfortable in this relationship, but he is also becoming more comfortable with himself. I thought that was a really neat sort of juxtaposition to see how Shiro used to be and how far he's come.
Ben
What I want to reiterate, after musing on it so much, is how genuinely special it is to have an episodic show about the lives of gay people in our list of shows to recommend to people.
NiNi
You know I'm not so much on the recommends as you are, but I will sit and watch this show anytime, any day, anywhere, starting at any point. I will watch one episode. I will watch seven episodes. I will skip around in time. I'll watch the movie. Because for me it's about just sitting and having that moment with these characters that I love. It's like a warm hug. I like this show, I love this show. Long may it reign. Hopefully they come back again. Not too far away.
If I'm talking about a thesis statement of how I feel about this show, it is that What Did You Eat Yesterday? is a show about just going along through life with the person that you love. And that's all it is. There's nothing more to it. It's very simple, but in that simplicity there is so much.
Ben
I really hope we get to talk about this show again. I really hope that Uchino and Nishijima and friends are able to come back together for this show again. I will totally understand and respect if they can't, or don't. But I really hope they do! [laughs]
NiNi
I hope that we get What Did You Eat Yesterday? episodes every other year for the next decade.
Ben
If you have not yet watched What Did You Eat Yesterday? It is available on GagaOOlala. Please go watch it. I hope you enjoy it. If you are a member of our pod team and you are reading this transcript—[NiNi laughs]—and you've still not watched this show, I am begging you, please watch this show.
NiNi
She's gonna get a kick out of that.
[both laugh]
Right, so that is going to wrap us up on Om-nom-nom, our What Did You Eat Yesterday? episode. We out. Say bye to the people, Ben.
Ben
Peace.

Tumblr media
"I'll pick up the tab"
before you had the chance to even pull out your wallet, taehyung slapped his card onto the dinner table in front of you. "I got it, babe, no worries"
You scoff, typical him.
"you paid last time, and it isnt really fair you know?" you mumble, feeling shy as his soft eyes gaze deeply at you, trying to gather your attention.
"Y/N, stop" he took your hand and squeezed it, "you dont need to fret, you're my doll, I can spoil you if I want, yeah?"
You simply shrugged, feeling defeated as he stood, "I'll go to the front and pay, stay here baby"
You nodded as you watched him walk off, scraping the last bit of dessert off your plate and onto your mouth. Taehyung and you usually went out on special occasions, but not that you were engaged, everyday felt like a special occasion. He would suprise you with random reservations at random timing- for instance, today you came home from work, tired and dirty, but he sat at the door with that little grin of his, explaining that he managed to squeeze a date in at one of the "super fancy" dinner places in the city.
You couldn't say no, especially to his sweet doe eyes, so of course you dolled up and came with him, and as always it was more than enjoyable....you just wish he would let you pay....considering he did everything else.
You looked up to see what was taking so long, and to your surprise, he was stuck at the front counter with some woman who looked like a model, her hand on his shoulder and everything.
Whatever they were engaging in must've been really interesting considering how attentive her eyes were to his.
You arent the jealous type, and you know taehyung would never cross that line with you.....but seeing this rando touch up on your practical husband.....oh hell no
He waves a hand and slowly makes his way back to the table, "sorry baby....."
"whos that?"
He shrugged "actually, I have no idea...but I think she was flirting with me"
you would be lying to say that your blood didnt boil at those words "what? wait....what did she say?"
"well....she was complimenting my outfit then proceeded to touch me-"
"i saw" you cut him off, a slight smirk crossing his face
"but-...I didnt give her any of my time...."
"hm..." you sigh, looking down at your phone
"baby, cmon..." he leans over and kisses your head, "you know I only love you, my sweet, beautiful girl, hm?"
"wellllll-" you tease, playing angry
Taehyungs eyes caught the blonde woman off in the distance eyeing him, he smirked once more and whispered. "come with me"
He gently led you to the center of the dining room, standing on a chair as he started speaking, your heart sank to your ass. "what are you fucking doing???" you couldnt help but laugh.
"attention everyone!!" he began, ignoring you, "I would like to make an announcement"
oh great....here we go.
everyone turned to look at both of you, including the one intrigued by taehyung. You felt the heat rise to your face.
"Y/N, you know that the past 10 years of my life have been the most amazing yet, every day I fall deeper into love with you......" He kneeled and you almost lost it, covering your mouth to not laugh
"get. up." you whispered through gritted teeth.
The irony in this is, well, you are already engaged.
Lesson learned here is to not question this mans public love for you, because he has no fear of hiding it.
"Y/N, will you make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?"
the room gasped, the blonde woman was seen walking away awkwardly as I giggle, "y-yeah, sure"
He jumped up and kissed you all over your face, whispering as the room grew with applause. "now do you believe me?"
"I never didnt believe you" you teased, hitting his chest before kissing him back. "you are such a dork"
"you know I like to see how red your face gets" he mumbled "my little tomato"
"I can publicly yell "never mind" right now, watch it" you glared, kissing him again.
He held his hands up, giggling, "okay okay, lets get out of here so I can realllyyyy show you how much I love you"
well now you can say youve been proposed to twice, thats something, right?
