here’s ur reminder to reblog art!!! it’s very frustrating when an artist works on a piece for DAYS only to receive little to no recognition for it, especially when it takes not even 2 seconds to click a reblog button.

off topic - let’s talk about gaylena 👀
selena gomez is one of taylor’s oldest and bestest friends and given that she is in the 22 liner notes, a huge part of taylor’s life, and maybe fruity herself it seems like possibly we don’t talk about her here at the blog enough!
i don’t want to do a timeline of selena and taylor’s friendship - you can read more about that here, but they met back in the day when they were both dating jonas brothers and to me this idea of finding a real friendship in the midst of these contrived promances is pretty adorable.
ofc most of y’all think taylor is a fruit basket but i think there’s a good chance that selena is too!  i’m not saying she is for sure but y’all know me.  i’’m here to make a compelling case that everyone and their dog is gay so let’s gooooo!
Part I - At least one fake rs!
Selena “dated” Taylor Lautner in 2009 and he’s definitely gay.  Of course, that doesn’t mean she is, it could just be PR, but y’all know I gotta note everything!  We stan our fruity bffs dating the same gays 😍
Part II - Selena x cara delevingne
i feel like there’s a chance they met through taylor but everyone in that squad adjacent circle knows one another.  cara dated michelle rodriguez for the first half of 2014 and then got with annie clark in March 2015 but it feels like it’s possible something has gone on between her and Selena from summer 2014 - early 2015? ...maybe something casual on and off a bit?
August 2014 - Steamy pics surface in Saint-Tropez, France
Selena and and a freshly single Cara vacation together in part to celebrate Selena’s 22nd birthday.
They party together and look cozy!
Pictures such as this surface and spark rumors around the two:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Selena apparently loves the rumors and gushes about being shipped with Cara.
Quote:
You say Selena drag queens were the true measure of success for you. But isn’t it true that you’re not truly famous until you’ve been the subject of a gay rumor? And last year, the tabloids had a field day with photos of you and Cara Delevingne. I’ve made it!
How did you react to those rumors? Honestly, I loved it. I didn’t mind it. Especially because they weren’t talking about other people in my life for once, which was wonderful. Honestly, though, she’s incredible and very open and she just makes me open. She’s so fun and she’s just extremely adventurous, and sometimes I just want that in my life, so I didn’t mind it. I loved it.
Notice she doesn’t deny them?  Now of course she could just be being cool, if she freaked out about it that might be even weirder but hey, it’s still kind of interesting.
Then she admits to questioning her sexuality???
Have you ever questioned your sexuality? Oh, I think everybody does, no matter who they are. I do, yeah, of course. Absolutely. I think it’s healthy to gain a perspective on who you are deep down, question yourself and challenge yourself; it’s important to do that.
(Selena btw, this is cool and all, but not everybody questions their sexuality, maybe you’re just gay 👀)
November 1 - LACMA Art + Film Gala
Tumblr media
they even left the event together 👀
Tumblr media
and they hung out earlier that day as well:
Tumblr media
They were seen the next day partying for Kendall Jenner’s bday singing to her:
Tumblr media
a few weeks later Cara tweets Selena’s lyrics!
Tumblr media
In December 2014 they are travelling together in texas:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in january 2015 they get cozy at the golden globes together!
Tumblr media
and they leave together again:
Tumblr media
January 19th/20th a bunch of gay nonsense happens
They post this gay shit with matching shoes and linked fingers:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then they say this to one another:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enty says they were hooking up!
Tumblr media
then we don’t get any more content that i can find for about six months! perhaps they had a fling from summer 2014-jan 2015 and then it ends, Cara gets with Annie in March?  Then after half a year apart Selena and Cara resume a friendly relationship?  Perhaps!  Selena is seen with Justin a bit off and on during this time but this was in their Style/Heat Death Era imo (tbh i probably shouldn’t give a hetty pairing including Justin that designation 🤢but y’all get what I’m saying - it’s fully possible Selena was hooking up with both of them!
Now I’m not super familiar with Selena’s discography so y’all lmk if I’m missing anything major - lyric wise that point to her not being straight.
Selena’s album Revival that comes out after this relationship has a few songs with some vibes, even though I get the feeling a lot of it is probably about Justin, allow me to reach.  The title track could be translated as someone coming to terms with their sexuality (among other things):
I feel like I've awakened lately The chains around me are finally breaking I've been under self-restoration I've become my own salvation Showing up, no more hiding, hiding The light inside me is bursting, shining It's my, my, my time to butterfly
Good for you, imo, is too sexy to be about a man even if it’s not super queer lyrically it’s a vibe ok?
Me & My Girls might be a bestie anthem a la 22 (oh wait, no 22 was gay too) but I mean...could be about a girl gang of lesbians too!
And if we want it, we take it If we need money, we make it Nobody knows if we fake it You like to watch while we shake it I know we're making you thirsty You want us all in the worst way But you don't understand I don't need a man
Quinn Fabray indeed!
Nobody feels probably like a retrospective on Justin 🙄but...there is a hint of sapphic craving in there!  Saying this particular lover loves them differently than everyone is a bit 👀 plus this stanza:
No oxygen, can barely breathe My darkest sin, you've raised release And it's all because of you, all because of you And I don't know what it is, but you've pulled me in No one compares, could ever begin To love me like you do And I wouldn't want them to
Is Perfect about some bitch Justin started dating?  Probably but bear with me here this song is actually pretty fucking gay.  Gay enough that I’m gonna add it to one of my gay playlists.  Could this song actually be about Cara moving on to Annie?
Ooh, and I bet she has it all Bet she's beautiful like you, like you And I bet she's got that touch Makes you fall in love, like you, like you
I can taste her lipstick and see her laying across your chest I can feel the distance every time you remember her fingertips Maybe I should be more like her Maybe I should be more like her I can taste her lipstick, it's like I'm kissing her, too And she's perfect And she's perfect
Part III - Selena x Julia Michaels
Julia Michaels is a singer/songwriter known for her song Issues.  I don’t know her sexuality but she at the least has gay vibes!  It seems they met around this time perhaps because Julia wrote on Revival.
They have a friendly enough friendship for a few years, liking one another’s posts on IG from time to time, posing for a photo a time or two and then they seem to get swept up into this very intense friendship in 2019.  They write some music together and Julia goes whole hog in promoting the shoe brand Selena is hawking this time 😭
2019 - The Superior Sapphic Jelena Timeline:
It starts, for some reason with a lot of shoe promotion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
chill, chill
more shoes
Tumblr media
but more gayness?
Tumblr media
this homo shit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok...
Then we go into the REALLY GAY NOVEMBER OF 2019:
Tumblr media
Then they perform together:
Tumblr media
And...actually kiss...on the mouth on stage???
Tumblr media
Sure it’s just a peck but still...if that were a guy people would say they were dating.
Somehow kissing on the mouth isn’t the gayest thing these girls do over this period because these fucking dykes got matching tattoos.  I’ve read enough Larry blogs to know this actually means they’re secretly married.  All jokes aside this is fruity behavior.
From their IG stories:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Selena gets Julia a very nice christmas gift:
Tumblr media
Covid sets in and content drops off but god damn!  It’s possible they just had an intense friendship but if a man and a woman collabed on music together, kissed in public, and got matching tattoos everyone would say they were dating!
Selena, as far as I can find, didn’t have any public boyfriends around this time so who are some of these love songs about?
Rare comes out in January 2020 and perhaps has some gayish songs?
Don’t tell me why but boyfriend lowkey, has a gay vibe.  Don’t ask me to explain it but it’s just the musicality of it.
Crowded Room could be a love song for Julia?  (or by Julia for Selena, since they’re collaborators?)
Baby, it's just me and you Baby, it's just me and you Just us two Even in a crowded room Baby, it's just me and you, yeah
These are general gay vibes, our secret moments in a crowded room tease
It started polite, out on thin ice 'Til you came over to break it I threw you a line and you were mine
It would have started out polite between them, since they worked together for years before whatever 2019 was happened.  And throwing someone a line first of all makes Selena sound like the aggressor but also “throwing someone a line” could be a reference to writing songs together.
Yeah, I was afraid, but you made it safe I guess that is our combination Said you feel lost, well, so do I So won't you call me in the morning? I think that you should call me in the morning If you feel the same, 'cause
Lots of people are afraid at the beginning of a gay rs.  Treacherous tease 👀
In summation!
Selena does gay stuff like fantasizing ab kissing other women in her music, getting very touchy with famous dykes on vacay, hangs out with Taylor Swift, has chronic mental health issues, dated a jonas brother and a twilight gay, has admitted to questioning her sexuality, and loves being shipped with women.  Is she gay?  I don’t know!   But all she’s missing from her celesbian bingo card is a suspiciously intense friendship with a Glee Cast member! What do you guys think?  Selena fruity or just weird?
Edit to add: so apparently I missed an entire ship and Selena supposedly acted really gay all the time with her backup dancer Charity Baroni.  Exposing SMG has posted a lot about all that.
Also Selena has been cast in a gay role! edit to add: @bisluthq went and found this for me - julia is indeed a fruit queen

hey kasia! so, i read your post saying that you’re still not feeling well and that you might have an ear infection now 🥺 i’m so sorry honey! no one deserves that, but especially not an angel like you 🥺❤️ and as someone who had to get surgery to prevent the seemingly infinite amount of ear infections i got when i was little, i know how painful and annoying they can be! 😣 so with that on top of an awful cough (do you know what it is?) for two and a half weeks, that is the absolute worst. please know that i’m sending you all my love and well wishes to hope that you start to feel better soon! by the way, it’s been a long time since i’ve had an ear infection but if i remember correctly laying my painful ear on a heating pad really helps!
also p.s. when i was writing “an angel” i accidentally typed “a bagel” 😂 you in fact are not a bagel but the sweetest angel ever
but anyway— i just wanted to send you this nice little message to say a few things to hopefully improve your day 🥰 i’m gonna try to be concise but we’ll see what happens. i did this for @babyyhoneyydarling yesterday and it got long 🤦🏼‍♀️ but let me get started!
ok so first of all i know i say these things a whole bunch but i promise you right now, i mean them with my entire heart. kasia, you are hands-down one of the SWEETEST and most kindhearted people i’ve ever met. seriously? i don’t deserve you. at all! i’ll get a random ask from you and it makes my entire day so much more worth it 🥺💕 the care you’ve shown me and the other friends you have on here just makes me so happy. there isn’t enough love in this world spread around, but you make it better ☺️ you radiate sunshine energy all the time, even when i know you aren’t doing the best personally. and that takes a whole lot! i appreciate that you show us all love and support every single day— it’s hard to appreciate ourselves sometimes, so getting that from someone who we care about means the whole world!! you’ve made me feel better on the days that i’m at my lowest 🥺 and not only are you the most wonderful person ever, but your writing talent? i don’t even know where to begin. like i’ve said before, i have a tough time reading anything, so when i find a book or fic i can read, i am so grateful! and your fics that i’ve had the pleasure of reading do just that ❤️ just everything about them is perfect in my opinion— you come up with such interesting storylines that i could never even DREAM of! i know you aren’t always super confident in your work but i assure you, they truly are works of art. you deserve every single note they get, and endless support!! 😘 also i just wanted to add in quickly that i am SO proud of you for being able to write every day— it’s not something that all of us can do, so even if it’s not “great” quality, just getting your ideas and feelings out onto “paper” is the important thing. i also wanted to add in that i absolutely love your little writing games that you do 🥰 you are so creative with your 3-sentence ones and i seriously don’t know how you do it on the spot like that!! i take weeks to come up with stuff 😅🤦🏼‍♀️ speaking of games, i just want to say that i’ve loved getting the ability to know you through your blog. you are so welcoming and energizing— i’ve felt so comfortable here thanks to you!! i’ll admit i’m still very intimidated by some people, and even though i am so in awe of you, i feel like i’ve known you forever. which, for me, isn’t something that happens often! i can only think of a handful of friends 💕 i’ve never felt stressed out or scared when i talk to you (sometimes i feel like people are gonna judge me but you are just so kind 🥺☺️❤️) and i just want to say thank you for that. thank you for being you, kasia, you are wonderful, talented, and BEAUTIFUL, both inside and out!!! did you think i’d forget to add that? you are so gorgeous oh my god 🥰
ok— i could keep going but alas, i have wasted a lot of your time and blog space by sending this in 😂 i love you SO SO SO MUCH KASIA!!! i wish i could come give you a hug and help you feel better because you deserve all the best days 🥺❤️ i hope you have a better evening honey!!
also p.p.s. it started snowing a little bit here earlier today and it was the nice light and fluffy snow— it reminded me of you! ☺️💕
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve tried to come up with an answer that wouldn’t be me just repeatedly screaming HELENA MY SWEET BABY ANGEL SWEETHEART LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE TOO PRECIOUS FOR WORDS but I couldn’t and I’ve been thinking since yesterday dajka let me try, though.
HELENA MY SWEET BABY ANGEL SWEETHEART I LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE TOO PRECIOUS FOR WORDS
ok i’m done
i’m so not done, you’re just so lovely and every single time I am blessed with your messages or posts or just your sole presence on my dash or in my thoughts, I am just so thankful?? You’re such a sweet and wonderful human and to be able to call myself your friend is so amazing. I can’t believe you’ve singlehandedly saved this clusterfuck of a year by just being you and brightening the life of everyone you talk to, myself included? You’re so amazing??? I can’t belive u ♥♥♥
I’m so incredibly happy to know that I’m able to make you feel better and remind you of all the incredible qualities you have when you don’t remember about them yourself. I love making you happy and cheering you up when you need it so it means the world to me knowing that I succeed. And I want you to know that you do the exact same things to me :’) I feel so cared for and appreciated thanks to you and you sending things like this whenever i whine about not feeling my best? It just makes me cry happy tears forever, I love you so much my heart is just gonna burst someday.
And all those nice things you say about my writing just make my heart go all !!!!! I’m not gonna whine again but it really means the world and every single nice word I hear about my writing makes me a tad bit confident and while I’ll probably stay critical and self-conscious forever, knowing that you and all the other incredible people that appreciate my work are enjoying the things I almost always dislike? dakjda It makes me dislike them less, cause they make you happy and it’s more than I could ask for :’) I enjoy writing even while it’s a pain in the ass and you all make it so worth it :’) Also I never thought I’ll like those 3 sentence thingies so much dkjakds it usually takes me so much to figure things out (like all the christmas prompts i have in my inbox even though it’s December 11th already dajda)? And when I think about a fic I tend to start way too early and I get discouraged when I figure how much i need to write before I get to the “good part”? So i guess the limit of 3 sentences makes me able to just stuff as much of the “good part” as i can so maybe that’s why i like them so much dsakjkas
I got sidetracked, gimme a sec I need to remember what i wanted to say.
Oh yeah, i remember now - HELENA YOU SWEET, SWEET, BEAUTIFUL SOUL YOU’RE TOO PRECIOUS FOR THIS AWFUL WORLD ♥♥ I just want to wrap you in a blanket and hug forever to make sure nothing bad ever happens to you. And how dare you call this wonderful message a waste of space or time! I loved every single letter in it, just like I love every single part of you and I’ll forever be amazed that such an incredible person once looked at my blog and thought “i’m gonna make her heart explode from love-overload because that’s what she deserves”. I love you so much and I will repeart it forever and a bit longer probably.
As for my well-being, it’s not being so well djasdja I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of an infection but it’s basically the same it was yesterday, it’s not getting worse :’)) (thank fuck it seems to be a mostly painless one cause otherwise i’d die already) I have no idea what was that cough, it’s kinda hard to get a doctors appointment atm and I was kinda paranoid about having covid so i just preffered to stay holed up at home and wait dajkdajk which is not a good way to do things, I’m a horrible example in life but it’s mostly over now (the cough, not life dhjakjda) so i guess it didn’t turn out worse by my lack of professional expertise djaskj I really hope it will all pass soon, I hate being sick cause I always was a rather healthy person and only get a light cold like once a year or even less often? so getting sick so much while not leaving the damn house is just a bad joke from the universe dhkakda
On a more positive note - it was snowing today too!! It started around the afternoon and it’s still here! I’m so happy and I hope it’ll last for a bit :’)
Tumblr media
here’s the (not current but it didn’t change much) view from my flat, it’s not even that much snow and it still makes me so excited djasdkja :’)
Again - thank you so much for this message, sweetheart. It means everything to me, I love you so so much ♥♥

Ok so. Since Hypnosis Mic has a Visual Kei lover in its cast now (I’m talking about Jyushi, of course), I’ve decided to make a post in this blog to introduce some Visual Kei bands to the ones who aren’t familiar with the style. I’m not a pro myself but I love J-rock/VK since I was like 12 so I know my share of bands... Here are some I hc that Jyushi would love too!
Ah, before you ask "Cain, why didn't you add (insert band here) in the post?" the answer is most likely:
I don't know it.
I know it but have never stopped to actually listen to it so I don't feel comfortable recommending it. X JAPAN
I don't listen to it. the GazettE
I chose not to bc I couldn't post 77349072409273 bands so I selected just a few since this post is just an introduction to the style after all.
I forgot.
This post is gonna be kinda long and have some pictures and links to videos and songs and a small introduction about the bands, so I’m gonna put it under a Read More!
Kagrra,
Tumblr media
Kagrra, (神樂 Kagura) was a band formed in 1998 by Isshi (vocals, flute), Akiya (guitar), Shin (guitar, koto), Nao (bass) and Izumi (drums). Their major debut was in 2004 with the single Urei. Their lyrics were in the style of Heian era poetry, their costumes frequently incorporated traditional Japanese clothing styles, and traditional Japanese instruments and drum rhythms were used in some of their songs. On November 10, 2010, it was announced that Kagrra, would be disbanding. As a final request, the members asked that fans refer to it as a "demise" rather than a disbandment. The band released one last CD and held a final tour. The CD, entitled Hyakki Kenran, was released on February 2, 2011. Their final tour began on February 13, 2011 and ended on March 3, 2011. On July 25, 2011, it was announced that vocalist Isshi died in his home on July 18, 2011. He was 32 years old. (Source: Wikipedia)

Plastic Tree, also known as PuraTuri (プラトゥリ) or Pura (プラ) is a Japanese alternative rock band formed in 1993 by Ryutaro Arimura (vocals, backup guitar), Akira Nakayama (guitar), Tadashi Hasegawa (bass) and Shin* (drums). Early in their career, their music had heavy visual kei influences. As time went on, their sound seemed to change and evolve with every album. Plastic Tree combine alternative rock with art rock, electronic, and heavy metal. Their sound is a blend of raw melody, with the occasional orchestral backing track. However, the band does not think that they should be placed into any specific genre. Plastic Tree claim that their sound has been considerably influenced by British bands such as Radiohead and The Cure.
*Shin has been replaced by other two drummers since their debut, and their current drummer is Kenken Sato. (Source: Wikipedia)

Originally a visual kei band, the members later opted for more subtle attire, but have continued to maintain a dramatic image on stage. (Source: Wikipedia)

Ah, before the post ends, I’ll link the video from Amaterasu by the band Kiryu, which I don’t know much about yet but I love this song and their style and I think Jyushi and Kuko would enjoy it too!

400. My favorite highlights from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (1980s, 1990s)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1982, Olive Oyl became the first human female balloon at the Macy’s parade.  However, by 1985, she was left out of the parade due to her height + the bad weather that day:
Tumblr media
Olive Oyl was redesigned for her final parade in 1986, but it was too late, she was just too tall:
Tumblr media
(also note that her elbow is missing)
However, I found a clip of her at a parade in Philadelphia in 1989! Being her dangerous self. (blog entry about this parade here)
Tumblr media
In 1983, Mickey Mouse died, and I am loving the drama associated with it. I looked up what the Mickey balloon looked like back then, and he looked like a knockoff of Mickey. Bobo Mickey.
I watched parts of the 1983 parade on YouTube, and you know who is in it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cats.
(at 36:59) Oh my god. The original broadway cast with Betty Buckley playing Grizabella, and Marlene Danielle is there, playing Demeter!
Tumblr media
There was also a cat hanging out of the window at Macys!  I can’t tell which one this is.
Tumblr media
Bryant Gumbel from Today hosted this year, and you can totally tell that he is miserable. That’s something I’ve learned to like about him since starting this blog several years ago. He never hides how miserable he is. (I mean ... the memo) Rewind the cats performance, listen to him read the lyrics to Grizabella the Glamour Cat. He is gone.
Tumblr media
Alvin & the Chipmunks sang “tomorrow’ from Annie? There’s a part where these voices off screen ask the kids when they’re gonna do their chores, and the answer is “🎵tomorrow🎶”. Well, one of the chores is “are you gonna start your diet, Theodore?”Then the camera cuts to Bryant and he is giggling:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(baby) Joey Lawrence is also there through at least the first part of the parade interrupting stuff, like dancing with the Flintstones while they sing “jingle bell rocks”. He was also in the Cissy Houston broadway bit too.
Tumblr media
(Robin looked like he was about to barf on his float)
1989 (partial video of parade) , it snowed about four inches that day. Deborah Norville hosted for the first time that year along with Willard Scott. She suuuuckkkked as a Today show host. I know its not polite to use the word “sucked” when I’m trying to be a professional pretend historian, but she wasn’t good.
Tumblr media
Melba was at this parade! We remember Melba...
Tumblr media
OH. 1989 was the year that Alf kept interrupting! He nearly dies of excitement when he sees the Garfield balloon. He looks kinda depressing here, hanging out a window in a dark room at Macys, snow falling down.
Tumblr media
Scott Bakula striked up a band in the snow. The crowd behind him judging his every move. Dixie Carter was on a Native American float wearing a giant grey fur coat, looking like Old 'Doot from Cats.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This happened too.
Tumblr media
Bart is my all time favorite balloon. He misbehaved a few years later too:
Tumblr media
1995 was Bart’s last year, after having problems every single year he was in the parade.
Tumblr media
I love this description on yet another year where Kermit broke (this time in 1991):
Tumblr media
1991 (video) was the first year that Katie Couric hosted with Willard Scott. A magician makes them appear!
Tumblr media
Sharon, Lois, and Braham was there too ... three people who I completely forgot about until this very second.
Tumblr media
A circus came and a wind up elephant dog was there.
Tumblr media
Lea Salonga sang from Miss Saigon!
Tumblr media
OUR BOY FRASIER SHOWED UP.
Tumblr media
Part 2 has Kermit’s demise. Aw, Willard said “it’s not so easy being green” as he was introducing the Kermit balloon.
Tumblr media
They had clips of Kermit in better days ready to go! I guess this was the usual back then for when a balloon popped mid-parade, show its archive roll.
Tumblr media
“You test me every (thanksgiving) day boy!”
(deflated Kermit was the inspiration for this piece of art in 2018)
Tumblr media
You know one balloon I didn’t like growing up? Beethoven. He was in the parade from 1992-1995, and then brought back in 2008 for some reason. I guess he had another direct to DVD movie.
Tumblr media
He looked extra droopy in 2008. I guess that’s what happens when you’re a 16 year old balloon.

1994 was the first year for the Cat in the Hat balloon, which became infamous in 1997 when he flew into a lamppost and critically injured a woman, Kathleen Caronna, who was in a coma for a month after her injury. 1 You may also remember Kathleen because in 2006, a plane carrying baseball player Cory Lidle crashed into her apartment. When my dad told me this, I thought he was reading an internet hoax. No, it was her apartment, for reals! 2
Tumblr media
1999 was the peak of the dot-com boom, and its apparent. One of the sponsors was (in Don Pardo voice) GAAAATTEEWAYYYYY COMMPUUUUTTERRS.
Tumblr media
and the pets.com dog had a float.
Tumblr media
The Rockettes also dressed like marshmallow ladies who are manequins come to life? Matt Lauer’s words, not mine. It poured rain that day, and the painted street decoration was ruined immediately. I feel like I remember green pant being on some broadway performers costumes.

Two Bedroom Updates That Made A Surprisingly Big Difference http://ift.tt/2lV3suS
It seems like every room in our house undergoes a gradual (and often never-ending) evolution, but our bedrooms seem especially prone to this slow-burn decorating process. Exhibit A: this old “Evolution Of A Bedroom” post that chronicled the meandering path of our last home’s master bedroom. Exhibit B: this more recent one about the winding evolution of our daughter’s current bedroom.
Well, if it pleases the court, I’d like to submit yet another bedroom into evidence: our current master bedroom. (I don’t know why I doubled-down on the legal metaphor guys. Consider your objection sustained).
bench / rug / plant / similar floor lamp, chair, pillow / garden stool / chandelier / art (top, bottom)
When we bought the house, the room looked like this. The walls, ceiling, trim, and even the carpet were basically the same off-white color.
But rather than drag you back through all of the tweaks that we’ve made in this room over the last 3.5 years (yes, it has been that long!), let’s just pick up where we left off. As in, after we laid hardwood floors, painted it dark blue, added a frame gallery, and repainted it greige.
Change #1 is the light fixture. As much as we were charmed by the brass & glass fixture that we added a couple of years ago, we knew pretty quickly that it was a little undersized for such a large room. But rather than race to replace it with something bigger (and hang the old one in our closet or bathroom where it’ll be better suited) we decided to just enjoy it for what it was until we found something that we were sure was IT. Because there’s nothing like rushing out to correct “the wrong thing” only to realize a few months later that your updated choice is also “the wrong thing.”
So we waited. And waited. And last December, not only did a certain capiz chandelier catch our eye, its holiday sale price ($250 marked down from $479) made all the right synapses fire in our brains, flooding our bodies with serotonin, and sending spasms directly to our online shopping fingers. In short, purchase made. (This particular fixture seems to go in and out of stock, but right now it’s in stock and $100 off!)
curtains / rug / bench / plant / garden stool / similar chair / chandelier / inlay dresser / night stands
We knew the size would be better suited for the room, and the shiny chrome finish would work well with similar finishes already in the room (the floor lamp, the night stand hardware, etc). We’re all about mixing metals in a room as long as each finish appears a few times so nothing looks like an accident – like how the dark curtain rods mimic the dark frames, our inlay dresser’s hardware, and the feet of chair.
Plus, you know we’re already documented presidents of The Capiz Fan Club (Exhibit D: our anniversary frame tradition, and Exhibit E: our dining room’s chandelier, below).
end chairs / wood chairs / chandelier / blinds / similar art, table, rug / vase
The box arrived shortly before Christmas and it was kind of like unwrapping a present early. Especially the unwrapping part…
Yep, that’s EVERY strand of capiz carefully wrapped and taped in plastic to prevent breakage during shipping. Obviously, I can appreciate the careful packaging, but it was quite the task to untape and unfurl them one by one. I tried to count how many strands there were, but I lost track after the bottom two tiers.
I also lost track because I eventually tapped Sherry and said “you’re it” because my arms were getting numb. My feelings for this light fixture are summed up by a thought I’ve had about my children on particularly trying days: “It’s a good thing I love you, because sometimes you’re a lot of work.”
But all griping aside, she is a beaut. And there are three bulbs hidden in there (unlike the single bulb we had before) so it has also improved the functional lighting situation in our bedroom as well.
I’m sure you’ve noticed another change in these pictures (besides the plant swap – that philodendron is now living it up in our office downstairs because it didn’t seem to like being blasted by our heat vents up there once winter hit). Change #2 is the bed itself.
Our old Ikea bed was a platform bed, so our mattress rested on slats – which we heard wasn’t as ideal as it resting on a boxspring when we shared this big ol’ mattress diatribe. So in the hopes of maximizing our sleep even more, we thought we’d try swapping beds with the guest room, which already had the usual boxspring-and-frame situation going on.
We liked the look right away. The skirt felt sort of substantial and grounded in a way that the more leggy Ikea bed never did (although Sherry has been keeping an eye out for a light tan linen skirt to match the homemade headboard, so it looks even more like “a real gown up bed”). Once our free bed swap was complete, we just had to rehang the fabric headboard that we made a while ago, which had been attached to the bed frame itself. I used a really simple homemade cleat system to hang it directly onto the wall.
Basically I took two scrap 2 x 4″ boards and ran them through my table saw with the blade set on a slight angle. I hung one on the wall by screwing it into the studs, making sure the angle sloped towards the wall and that the whole board was level…
Next I attached the other board to the back of my headboard, making sure the angle of the cut faced down so it would slip right into the one on the wall. This is my favorite way to get a really secure hold on a big heavy object like a headboard. Note: I intentionally used something as thick as a 2 x 4″ board because our headboard has some depth to it, but if you’re hanging something thinner, they also sell metal cleats that would save you the trouble of cutting your own boards.
So with those two minor “evolutions” of our current bedroom, we’re loving the space even more. Although looking at this photo below, I’m realizing we’re overdue for some updated pictures in our gallery wall. We printed some new snapshots around this time last year, so it hasn’t been totally stuck in time, but the kids seem to keep growing on us.
Burger of course wasted no time giving the room his official pillow-sit-of-approval. Because apparently we live in a world where we can’t even make it to the end of photographing our bedroom without a chihuahua coming along and squishing down one of the pillows. #whoruntheworld #dogs
similar white pillows, yellow pillows, duvet, lamps, frames / night stands / curtain rods
And lest you think this evolution is 100% complete (because when does that ever happen?!) we’re probably going to ditch the TV in here soon. We haven’t turned that thing on in almost three years since our son was born… which sorta throws that whole wall further into design purgatory. I’m thinking rock climbing wall, but something tells me Sherry’s gonna fight me on that one.
P.S. Tried to source a bunch of stuff in this post, but if you have any additional questions about what’s in our house (or our paint colors) this page has those details. And if you want to see more before & afters of our home, you can always catch them on our House Tour page.
