✯Sturniolos as Half-bloods✯
God version
warnings: mentions of drugs, and sexual escapades
goddess version

Matt would be the son of Dionysus
Dionysus used to be the god of fertility, now being known as the god of wine, theatre, and ecstasy. Matt would eat this shit up let me tell you!! His style would deff consist of lots of red, leather, leopard print, and rings. Some of his fashion inspirations would be Freddy Mercury, Elton John, and the band Motley Crue. His father is the god of theatre, he's bound to be dramatic with his actions and style.
His cabin, number 12, would most definitely be known as the party cabin. He would throw big grand parties, each one having a theme ranging from the 70's to medieval. He would also host plays, all of them being dramatic, with dark plots. With the parties and plays, come drugs and alcohol. He has drugs of all types, weed, acid, shrooms, etc. His personal favorite is molly, the drug making him and anyone exceptionally horny. He finds that sex feels way better when he and his partner for the night are on it.
Speaking of sexual endeavors, this man is a freaky frog. The way he acts in the bedroom should be a crime! I'm talking rope, vibrators, blindfolds, ball gags, handcuffs, etc. Let's not forget, his dad is the god of fertility, BREEDING KINKKKKKK!!!!! He hates condoms due to his breeding kink, but god forbid he gets one of the girls at the camp pregnant. The only time he would let his breeding kink roam free is when he finally has sex with the girl he's had his eyes on since she arrived at the camp, the daughter of Aphrodite. He has a thing for ruining innocence.
He is known as the manwhore of the camp, most of the males hating him, but still hoping they get an invitation to his parties. The girls try to stay clear of him, knowing how he is but somehow still ending up in his bedroom. Let's get into the bedroom. It's giving Bruno Mars along with Shake & Go wig Anderson Paak. It's straight out of the 70's. It's clean and often smells like weed, wine, and cherries.
His bestfriend is Chris, the son of Hades. The two go hand in hand, partners in crime. When they first met, Matt asked Chris if he had any of his father's pomegranates so he could make wine. Chris couldn't help but laugh at the question, but Matt was being deadass. If Matt is throwing a party, Chris is right there cigarette in hand.
Dionysus's animal was a leopard and or a tiger. Matt would honor that by wearing leopard print and having tiger rugs.
I don't think Dionysus actually had children, but if he did I would imagine they had the ability to cause/cure both sexual and non-sexual madness with their words. like, imagine Matt just saying what he would do to you, and the more descriptive he got, you could basically feel him fucking you? yeah, sign me up!!
Dionysus's weapon of choice was a staff with a pinecone at the top, called a Thyrsus. I think Matt would have the same thing, but more like a cane an old-school pimp would have (thinking of Kat Williams) and it would have the head of a tiger.
His songs:
''I had a cane and a party hat, I was the king of this hologram where there's no such thing as getting out of hand" Don't threaten me with a good time- p!atd
"Hard candy dripping on me 'till my feet are wet" kiwi- harry styles
"And i crave your taste under my tongue everyday, keep the forbidden fruit coming my way." dopamine- borns
Tumblr media
Chris would be the son of hades
Hades is the god of the underworld, defending the rights of the dead and protecting the world as well as his wife Persephone. His style would be somewhat similar to Matt's as far as color goes. Lots of black, a few white pieces, and red as well. You will always see him in a leather jacket, his feet adorned by a pair of white air forces. With his father being the god of the underworld, Chris unfortunately got his reputation. A lot of the other half-bloods steering clear of him, whispering when he walks past, not even daring to say his name. it hurt Chris at first, having his peers view him as evil, but he grew accustomed to it. Eventually saying 'fuck it' and playing into the role they made for him.
His cabin being number 13 is perfect because I would like to think he would be born on October 13th, a Friday specifically. It would be deep in the woods, the path scary-looking and eerie. The only source of light being the skull torches against the front door. The only people coming to the house were himself and his best friend Matt, the son of Dionysus. Because no one came to his cabin, Matt would use it as the storage for the copious amounts of wine and paraphernalia he keeps handy. His room is dark (duh). Silk black bedding, books strewn randomly in the room. His skateboard was always propped against the door as well as his multiple pairs of beat-up shoes. He loves music, multiple vinyls, and CDs stacked up in crates around the cabin. He had his signature black guitar right next to his bed, always ready to grab and play. He's a man of few words in this universe. He often found himself writing love songs for the girl in cabin 20, the daughter of Hecate.
Being the son of Hades, anger is unfortunately something he can't avoid. Even though he is usually quiet, all it takes is one person to set him off. One of the Zeus boys was pushing him around and he snapped, damn near killing the boy before Matt pulled him away.
As stated before, his best friend is Matt. He was the only one in the camp to speak to him. Granted he was asking for pomegranates to make wine, but he stuck with him. Matt brought him out of his shell, making sure he was the first to get an invitation to his parties and plays, encouraging his love for music, and also being there for him when his anger got out of control.
Most of Hades, children do have powers. Those powers are necromancy, shadow manipulation, the ability to manipulate the earth, and shadow fusion. Chris would have all of these, especially necromancy and shadow manipulation/fusion. He would use necromancy to fuck with the others in the camp, loving the way his peers screamed in fright. He would only use shadow fusion to spy on his crush, but he gets caught and shyly reveals himself (help I wanna write a fic on the way they meet).
Hades animal representation is a black ram, a screeching owl, and a serpent. let's not forget the three-headed dog Cerberus. Chris would have a big-ass Doberman named Orcus. That dog would hate everyone but Chris, Matt, and the daughter of Hecate.
His songs:
"It's no big surprise you turned out this way" twin-sized mattress- the front bottoms
"There's a light in the crack, that's separating your thighs, and if you wanna go to heaven you should fuck me tonight" Young god- halsey
"My church offers no absolute, she tells me worship in the bedroom" take me to church- hoizer
Tumblr media
Nick would be the son of Hermes
Hermes was the god of trade, wealth, luck, sleep, language, thieves, and travel. His style would always consist of light blue jeans and some form of a white shirt/tank top. If he was delivering mail and or messages, he would also wear a blue jean jacket. Him being the son of Hermes is giving blonde Nick IDC idc idc!!!! He would always wear a pair of off-white Converse with wings on the side. Delivering mail can be boring, so he often wears headphones hooked up to a cassette player his best friend Chris gave him as a form of payment.
His cabin is number 11, a lucky number to most. I would imagine it to be a bit more elevated than the others. Perched on some type of high ground where the sun shines in the morning. His cabin would definitely be organized, with all the mail in a specific room in alphabetical order. All of the payments that weren't in cash were placed perfectly in the home, not a thing out of place. His bedding would be white with gold silk pillows. He loved to sleep so his bed was always unmade, blankets thrown all over the bed, even dipping onto the floor.
He often liked to cause a bit of chaos in the camp, it was his homage to his father. He would steal from the other campers, shrugging and rolling his eyes when they asked him about it. He would break into the counselor's office, picking the lock with ease to receive something of Matt's. He would do this often for the campers, but not without payment. If they weren't giving him cash, they had to pay by giving him something of theirs. The amount of jewelry he has is insane.
His best friends, despite not liking their attitudes, would be Matt and Chris. Matt had asked him to deliver invitations for a party, and Nick initially told him no after seeing the amount of invitations. He quickly changed his mind seeing the stack of cash and a gold chalice Matt offered. He and Chris became friends the day he guided Chris into the camp, much like his father guides souls to the underworld.
Most of Hermes' children have powers, those being enhanced speed, audiokensis, and Clauditiskinesis. Nick has all of these, his favorite being clauditiskinesis and audiokensis. He would use audio to listen in on everyone's conversations, it helped that he could be above them in the clouds, never being seen. That's how he figured out that one of the sons of Zeus has a crush on him.
He wouldn't have an animal in my opinion. I would imagine him to have a messenger bag that's like, never-ending lmao.
His songs:
"And i know it's no fun, when your first son gets up to no good" freaking out the neighborhood- mac demarco
"Like Peter Pan up in the sky" tongue-tied - group love
"If you could fly then you'd feel south. Up north getting cold soon." pink + white- frank ocean

Kinda crazy to think about. Camp as a setting has been the impetus for transformation from the very get-go and by season 4, we’ll have come full circle. Where we meet the gang and are introduced to the whole love-triangle-turned-square is immediately after the fallout of camp; Nini and Ricky are broken up while Nini and EJ are brought together under this setting.
Now, once again, at the very same camp EJ went to where he fell in love with Nini, things are shifting. Instead of Shallow Lake fueling Elton John’s romantic pursuits as he intends it to for a second time, he is not afforded the same luck. Rather than a coming together, there is a coming apart and the tides are turning in Ricky’s favor. Where we’ll meet him in season 4 will similarly to last time, be another liminal space in his relationship with Gina. Just like with Nini where they started off the first season needing to repair a bridge that had been burned (the whole “I love you” drama), Ricky will need to repair his romantic bridge with Gina, where he made the same mistake of holding back his feelings that he wasn’t yet ready to be confronted with.
Meaning that we’re almost exactly where we started, just ever so slightly contrasted (you can basically swap out Nini for Gina who now occupies her place beside Kourtney and Ricky since Olivia is off doing other things).
Same key players, different outcome that presents varying possibilities. And season 3, as a season of change (new characters who will hopefully be entering East High, Ashlyn coming out, breakups, truths getting revealed, EJ making strides towards his future, “big breaks”, sibling dynamics shifting, Kourtney overcoming her anxiety, Kourtney x Jet? etc etc.) really does exist to service and set-up the roll out of season 4 (which is often how television works, but occasionally each season of a show is its own contained thing so it’s interesting to see nonetheless). The fourth season will definitely see the slow build-up of Rina, as it did for Rini when we first met them. Isn’t that insane?
We’re in a loop!

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 24/09/2022 (Anne-Marie/Aitch, BLACKPINK, Montell Fish)
Dethroning Capaldi’s debut from last week is “I’m Good (Blue)” by David Guetta and Bebe Rexha, becoming Rexha’s first #1 on the UK Singles Chart and Guetta’s seventh. His last #1 was 2014’s “Lovers on the Sun” featuring Sam Martin and his best – by far – was “Club Can’t Handle Me” with Flo Rida. It’s not even close. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Tumblr media
Rundown
It’s a tried and true formula to make a hit out of an older hit in egregious form, and hey, I can’t stand the song but good for the duo and the Eiffel 65 guys especially. Guetta has been in comeback form for now while, it’s no surprise that he gets a worldwide hit with a song that resembles his old sound. Will it usurp the original’s three weeks at #1? I don’t know, but what I do know are the notable dropouts, songs exiting from the UK Top 75 – which is what I cover – after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40. This week, the list includes “There’d Better be a Mirrorball” by the Arctic Monkeys – it’ll be back with the album – but also “Yellow” by Coldplay, “Can’t Be Us” by Headie One, Bandokay and Abra Cadabra, “ALIEN SUPERSTAR” by Beyoncé, “Cold Heart” (PNAU Remix) by Elton John and Dua Lipa – finally, and “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi off of the return from last week.
What’s replacing these songs? Well, in terms of re-entries, “When it Rains it Pours” by Bad Boy Chiller Crew is back at #71, and in terms of notable gains, we have “Sex, Drugs, Etc.” by Beach Weather at #54, “All These Nights” by Tom Grennan at #51, “Kiss Me” by Dermot Kennedy at #50, “LA Leakers Freestyle” by Central Cee riding virality to #40, “Pink Venom” by BLACKPINK at #38 thanks to the album boost (more on that later), “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” by Lizzo at #28, “CUFF IT” by Beyoncé at #20, and “Big City Life” by Luude and Mattafix returning to the top 10 at #9.
The top five on the UK Singles Chart is pretty similar to last week, with “Super Freaky Girl” by Nicki Minaj at #5, “I Ain’t Worried” by OneRepublic at #4, “B.O.T.A. (Baddest of Them All)” by Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal at #3 and of course the switcheroo between Lewis Capaldi’s “Forget Me” and “I’m Good (Blue)” at the top. Now, as is tradition, let’s take a look at albums that I listened to from this week that did not impact the singles chart.
Off the Charts
Opening the Door – Little Dragon
See, this is an odd week: every album here is just one I’m kind of lukewarm on, and therefore this WILL actually be brief for once. This is an EP from Swedish electronic pop group Little Dragon, and it’s pretty likely to go in one ear and leave out of the other, with its at times bubbly but mostly smooth R&B grooves that don’t grow old as much as they flick into the background, to the point that even a JID verse is disappointing. It’s definitely passable, and kind of a vibe, but outside of the closer “Peace” with Stefan Sandberg, which is striking enough sonically, I don’t really care much about this.
Hold the Girl – Rina Sawayama
I didn’t really like the debut but I figured that this could be more of a refinement and man, it just kind of trails off in a really disappointing way. It debuted at #3 on the Albums Chart and I get why – it is a pretty decent pop album, but every single song kind of reminds me of a song that I can’t really put my finger on, and it’s really distracting. The production is mostly good but never immaculate, and a lot of these sweet hooks never punch as hard as they need to. If she was going for restraint, I’d get it, but a lot of this is gunning for the camp and the melodrama which I don’t think it executes that well, with the experimentation midway through the album just sounding tacked-on, even more so than the debut. My favourite track is “Send My Love to John”.
Impostor Syndrome – AG Club
Alternative rap group AG Club deliver their most refined project to date, with the most actual track ideas and musical progressions, and some killer beats, but again, I’m disappointed. There is a lot of experimentation within and beyond the pop-rap format but it really only selectively works to make compelling songs, and whilst the rapping is good, it’s not that quotable and they get overshadowed basically every single time by their guest stars. If you want a catchy, kind of out-there album with good production, it’s there, but looking for anything more, just like with Sawayama, might leave yo a bit disappointed. My favourite track is the undeniable and jazzy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” with some incredible verses from both redveil and especially Glen the Saiyan, as well as vocals from Sam Truth. Oh, and these guys can do emo-pop surprisingly well.
I Love You Jennifer B – Jockstrap
Maybe my expectations were just set too high but whilst there is some damn great music from the art pop duo, I feel let down by some elements of this. To get that out of the way first, Taylor Skye’s production is a lot less consistent and a cohesive sound gets really lost in the clashing frictions that are there fully on purpose but unintentionally distract from excellent performances from Georgia Ellery, and elsewhere, it has some great moments. The plummeting dread of “Neon” leads to a cathartic noise rock breakdown, the synth freakout on “Concrete Over Water” is well-deserved and the narrative and emotional thoroughline becomes increasingly clarified in the second half, particularly on “Glasgow”. That’s also where the album starts to fall for me, though. Whilst “Greatest Hits” is cute, it lyrically feels a bit lacking and honestly like a third draft, which makes it feel overly cryptic at best and just straight up annoying and unremarkable at worst, especially on the vulnerable yet frustrating “Angst”. As for the production gripes, it also gets worse and the demo qualities of the practically-a-closer “Lancaster Court” prevent it from being as ghostly as it could be and just make it unnecessarily tense. “50/50” is a jam but I have no idea how it sonically or thematically fits in here. All these dichotomies may just be why people love this so much, but I found this album to be sonically really promising and at times reaching that greatness, but ultimately lacking in actual development of these ideas. My favourite track is the sweetest, “What’s it All About?”, where Ellery careens with uncertainty on filtered acoustics and I wish the album was more focused to really hit home. And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 – “World’s Smallest Violin” – AJR
Produced by Ryan Met
We’re seriously doing this? We’re giving AJR a sleeper hit? To be fair, it’s not the worst song we could have given a hit to off of OK ORCHESTRA – I don’t know why I even listened to that album – but “Way Less Sad” was pushed and is probably the only tolerable track off of that record. Regardless, here we are with the brotherly trio’s new viral hit and obviously, I’m not a fan. Their typically obnoxious and chintzy tone is out here in full force, and AJR have always sounded like a show tune band with way too synthetic tones, especially the vocals here that act as backing and harmonies which feel like barbershop quartets and aren’t mixed particularly well. That’s of course before we get to the chorus which is just painful. I get the ambition, but Jack Met’s falsetto is not pleasant and the fading in of all of these synthetic, MIDI-sounding instruments in the messy drop just does not make sense other than flexing the fact that you have several different presets. Ignoring the... vaping reference, the lyrics aren’t awful though. Most of it is self-deprecative anyway, as he acknowledges his own complaining as unimportant yet still wanting an audience for his bitching as well as his achievements despite the fact that he’ll never be as impressive and his cause will never be as dire. Sure, it’s sold with as little tact as possible because it’s AJR, but it’s not reprehensible so really, my one complaint is the production, but God, it’s a large complaint. It’s so full of ideas yet so void of any of them at the same time. It almost reminds me of the more jovial levels of Super Mario Galaxy 2 if I can make any real contemporary sonic comparison, and yes, I know I just called a Wii game contemporary but I’m getting old, and if I can relate to AJR on anything, it is that.
#65 – “BILLIE EILISH.” – Armani White
Produced by July da Producer
I mean, it’s a good way to get your song in search results, right? Part of me hopes that Billie releases a response called “ARMANI WHITE.”, but what really is there to respond to here? The name-drop is in the chorus but it’s a cute reference to how he also needs a big shirt like Eilish often wears not because of anxiety but instead because he’s got a Glock under there. She’s not referenced throughout the rest of the song, and really, it just makes looking for this specific song more difficult since I’m going to see better songs by Eilish herself and just listen to those instead... which is a shame because I kind of like this. It relies on a recognisable sample of N.O.R.E.’s “Nothin’”, which peaked at #11 in the UK in 2002, which lays a pretty nice Middle Eastern sample from the peak era of the Neptunes behind July da Producer’s filters and heavy trap beat. I’m not a fan of his Auto-Tuned ad-libs but he has charisma as a vocalist, even if he’s slipping and sliding outside of the beat in a way that’s kind of sloppy. Sadly, there’s not much to be heard here in terms of actual punchlines and the song’s barely a minute and a half, so I’d stick to the original by N.O.R.E. with much more dynamic production and a Hell of a lot more style from both Pharrell’s hook and N.O.R.E.’s verse which are as distinct as ever even on a radio cut. He even name-drops Smash Mouth and Creed for like no reason, so the tradition of naming random alternative acts in your unrelated pop-rap hit continues to this day.
#61 – “Danielle (smile on my face)” – Fred again..
Produced by Fred again.., Benji Gibson, PARISI and Four Tet
I haven’t enjoyed much of the production work from Fred again.., especially as a lead artist, but I’m always willing to check out something from him because he tends to crib ideas or names that I have a fondness for, even if the songs don’t end up in my personal rotation. Most of the time, his songs act as cool ideas rather than actually functioning house tracks, and I was afraid that’d be the case with this one. After all, it relies on another very recognisable sample of Kanye protégé and alternative R&B singer 070 Shake’s “Nice to Have”, which of course didn’t chart but I think is pretty good as Shake goes into her typically flippant murmuring to express the humbling love that she feels with her partner. More broadly, it’s about the benefits of human companionship and the warping synth bass that initially trembles under her voice becomes this chasm of sound that briefly encapsulates her in the final chorus before the typical MIKE DEAN synth sound just buzzes away into the distance. It’s a great song, so how’s Mr. Again’s remix? Well, I think maybe 070 Shake deserved a feature credit given it’s a complete rework, but maybe her lawyers are worse than Future’s. All of the charm in the original is lost with this remix, it’s really awful. I like glitchy outsider house but the drums here are claustrophobic and it doesn’t help that the rubbery synth bass is really annoying, clashing generally with the content whilst not really repurposing it for any understandable recontextualisation. The vocal stem sounds like one of those DIY YouTube uploads, and the lyrics remain intact but less convincing when she sings “There’ll be a smile on my face” over cloudy, lo-fi grooveless music and a piercing level of wonky synth by the end that just contradicts everything about the original song that I liked. What an uncomfortable remix that just misses the point entirely. 070 Shake worked well with Swedish House Mafia earlier this year too so there’s precedent that this could work... but clearly not with Fred. Once again(..), I end up disappointed with his production.
#27 – “Hotel” – Montell Fish
Produced by Montell Fish
It’s sometimes weird to see such a limited star power in the name of someone debuting in the top 40, but this is a song that had gone viral on TikTok a while ago and was only now released to streaming platforms, seeing a lot of initial viral success for this Montell Fish guy who despite his low profile, has a couple big alternative R&B hits on streaming platforms, and I do like this new track. The fuzzy synths that come in on the first verse feel very MIKE DEAN-esque but given the distortion and guitar feedback that starts the track, and Fish’s tone being very different to say, an awkward Steve Lacy or a buttery Giveon, giving it all to his multi-tracked falsetto vocals that are just imperfect and lo-fi enough to really strike a “bedroom” resonance without being overly dissonant. The drums are mixed a bit too messily for me to dig fully, but I do get the chasm of that snare having a lot of impact for people, and it definitely fades into the wonderfully blended soundscape in both verses, only really becoming a bother during the bridge where those alarming synths aren’t there. I do have some nitpicks that keep me from fully enjoying the song too, like the guitar solo being kind of sloppy, and the lack of lyrical detail: I’ve been calling them verses, but it’s really just one chorus and it’s not particularly well-enunciated. These wouldn’t be problems if it weren’t for the production not being as top-notch as it should be, and the abrupt ending is a real misfire because this has a lot of potential, and with a rework from someone more professional or interesting – Hell, maybe MIKE DEAN should get on this and see what he can do – this could really be great, because there is something here and I’ll be watching out for Montell Fish for the years to come.
#24 – “Shut Down” – BLACKPINK
Produced by Teddy Park and 24
This one is a lot easier to explain. BLACKPINK released their album BORN PINK and whilst it debuted at #1 on the albums chart, it’s not one I listened to because, well, K-pop isn’t exactly something I’m interested in hearing. It’s a lot more conventional than “Pink Venom” which I still don’t understand and honestly, I like this. Putting “La Campanella” behind a trap beat sounds like something that should have been done before this, and the bass does boom behind a pretty hard instrumental, and thankfully, BLINK – if I’m allowed to call them that – spend most of the verses in Korean, as much of the group sound much more natural in their native languages. The girls sound pretty great in the braggadocious chorus, and “it’s black and it’s pink once the sun’s down” is a line that just kind of goes hard as a sentence... which is not something I often say about really any song here. Jennie’s verse is mostly in English, partly since she spent a lot of time studying in New Zealand so is fluent, and she sounds great. Sure, the flexing isn’t all that impressive but the melodic flows are hard-hitting and she trades off with Lisa really well. That final drop and outro has a lot more swagger than it has any right to be, and the violins all over the track sound really crisp alongside the trap percussion. For the first time probably ever, I can say that BLACKPINK’s attempts at rap have paid off for once, because this is great. It took a couple years but I guess they’re finally in my area.
#16 – “PSYCHO” – Anne-Marie and Aitch
Produced by Billen Ted and Mojam
I guess it’s just Opposite Day this week because, yes, I am about to say I like this song too. Now, it’s not because of Aitch – he’s barely here with his tiny verse and he’s barely on beat. It’s not even really because of the production either, even though it is good. The simple, J. White Did It-esque basic and cheap piano line would probably work more for an... actual rapper – yes, I know Aitch is here, he doesn’t count – alongside the trap beat, but much unlike the BLACKPINK song before, the percussion stutters in a way that stodges through the verses and just absolutely kills in the chorus. The real star here is Anne-Marie, who for once turns that bratty energy and off-kilter voice to something really passionate with all the distorted filters, sloppy Auto-Tune and voice cracks shining through in a way that emphasises this toxic, messy relationship in an effective albeit incredibly unsubtle way. Her interplay and chemistry with Aitch is surprisingly there, and the “Mambo No. 5” interpolation is just stupid enough to work – and, no, it’s not sampled heavily enough for me to dig up its chart history. Just know that Bob the Builder’s cover hit #1 the day the towers fell. This is not supposed to be taken seriously in any way, and I don’t know if it was Billen Ted or Mojam that came up with making the vocal loop sound like complete garbage in the drop but Goddamn, it’s practically industrial and sounds incredible. It’s not all that far from what Black Dresses would do, and for a pop song, it doesn’t play around or dampen it down that much. The bratty melodrama and personality is here, more on Anne-Marie’s slide than it is for Aitch, whose vocal mixing is so awful it has got to be intentional. For whatever reason, I think this will last even shorter than the BLACKPINK song, and I know people do hate this, but I’m into this a lot and I hope to hear more complete nonsense like this on the pop charts.
Conclusion
Yeah, Best of the Week is going to “PSYCHO” by Anne-Marie and Aitch, with a strong Honourable Mention to BLACKPINK for “Shut Down”. Yeah, it’s not often I can say any of that. As for the worst, since it was a mostly middling week, I really do have to give AJR the Worst of the Week for “World’s Smallest Violin” but “Danielle (smile on my face)” by Fred again.. is oddly close as the Dishonourable Mention. Being in the same breath as AJR is never a career highlight.
As for what’s on the horizon, I can expect some movement in the coming months. The charts sometimes tend to ramp up during these last few portions of the year, and it’s always exciting. With Taylor Swift coming soon, some episodes may be just rife with discourse. But for now, thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!

even if you have to cry, don't let your crown fall
a love letter to luxor’s ches elswood
Well, it’s finally time that I feel ready to post this, and while I’m aware it may be bittersweet with my upcoming departure, I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Today I present to you a three hour Ches playlist, divided into sections and covering her entire time at Luxor, from when I first picked her up in June of 2019 all the way to now. There’s quite a few plot references, and small (and not as small) references to other muses throughout, especially when it comes to Elliot, so keep an eye out for those as well!
I’d like to thank Lex for giving me the idea to make these, and her support throughout the process because without her, these playlists wouldn’t even exist. And thank you to everyone who has gone on this journey with us, while I’m sorry I need to dip out early after this event to focus on my health, I love y’all so much.
The standard Ches tws apply (poor mental health, alcoholism, etc etc), and anything I think may be a bit abnormal / section exclusive is noted on the sections.
twist me like a key, then you open the lock | pre-luxor:
the section of time before I played Ches at Luxor, very James heavy. additional tws: Death (Sign of the Times), Toxic relationships (nothing explicit tho)

ches’s progress from the end of march until now
The Man (Taylor Swift) [ I’m so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man. New game! We’ve already talked about songs where girls mention guys by name. How about songs that mention multiple people by name? As in, a song that includes a cast of specifically named characters. I started thinking about it after realizing Billy Joel has several songs that do this (”Piano Man”, “Movin’ Out”), and I recruited the family to think of other examples.
Here’s what we came up with so far:
“Moving Out”,“Piano Man” and “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” by Billy Joel
“Jack and Diane” by John Cougar Mellencamp
“Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi (and technically “It’s My Life”, since it also mentions Tommy and Gina)
“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” by Elmo and Patsy
“Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” by Gene Autry
“Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley
“Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” by The Beatles
“American Pie” by Don McLean
“The Second Week of Deer Camp” by Da Yoopers
“Bad Bad Leeroy Brown” by Jim Croce
“Benny and the Jets” by Elton John
“Coward of the County” by Kenny Rogers
“Summer of ‘69″ by Bryan Adams
Since the last game was so much fun, I’m asking you guys for help in thinking up more.
This game’s a bit more complicated than the last one, so I’m setting out a few ground rules we used while making our list:
1. It must mention at least two different people by name.
2. First-person perspective does not count as one of the people (for example, “Crocodile Rock” doesn’t count because it’s about “me and Suzie” and only Suzie is mentioned by name).
3. People referred to only by pronouns (he, she, they, etc.), family position (Mama, Papa, Grandpa, etc.) or titles/descriptors (the cop, the teacher, etc.) do not count toward the character count. They must have a specific name.
4. Named characters count even if the song only mentions their surname or a nickname.
5. Names used in metaphors don’t add to the character count. (For example, “I want a love like Johnny and June” mentions two people, but since they’re not characters within the song, they don’t count). They have to be characters within the song.
6. Songs written for musicals or television don’t count.
7. Songs written to teach history or tell Bible stories aren’t within the scope of this game, just because there are so many possibilities there. (Some wiggle room is allowed for popular songs that mention historical or legendary figures, but I haven’t quite defined the parameters, so suggestions are welcome).
So, does anyone have any more ideas?

love crying to The Waves Have Come - Chelsea Wolfe
30: A song that reminds you of yourself

some movies to watch during pride month!
that I have personally seen and certify as Good™
note: probably all of these have trigger warnings so I'm gonna leave it up to you to look those up.
a list complied partially for @hectorbeyerin
pride (2014) - based on the true story of lesbians and gays support the miners during the thatcher regime
but I'm a cheerleader (1999) - a romcom about a girl who gets sent to a conversion camp where, despite their best efforts, she falls in love
love, simon (2018) - coming of age story about a high school boy who falls in love with his online pen pal while trying to hide the fact that he’s gay
carol (2015) - a romantic drama about a younger woman’s affair with an older charming lady going through a divorce
brokeback mountain (2005) - follows the story of two cowboys who fall in love over the course of many years as they attempt to maintain their relationship while also conforming to society’s rules
the half of it (2020) - another coming of age story focused on an asian american girl who is paid to write love letters to the school jock’s crush while pretending to be him, but begins developing her own feelings
bohemian rhapsody (2018) - queen biopic with a focus on freddie mercury
rocketman (2019) - elton john musical biopic
the king and the clown (2005) - korean historical drama about a king who takes a liking if you know what I mean to one of the two of his jesters
the handmaiden (2016) - the korean lesbian revenge thriller that fascinated the cannes
my own private idaho (1991) - idk how to describe it. weird shakespearian fever dream with keanu reeves and river phoenix
the adventures of priscilla, queen of the desert (1994) - two drag queens and a trans woman tour across australia in a bus and chaos ensues
kill your darlings (2013) - a biopic surrounding the beat generation, particularly allen ginsberg
the perfection (2018) - a horror film about a has-been cellist who gets involved with her ex-teacher’s new protégée. this one I will give a trigger warning for because its a horror film. tw: lots of body horror including vomit, gore, etc. also a strong warning for sexual assault/rape
the danish girl (2015) - drama loosely based off of the life of lili elbe, one of the first people to receive sex reassignment surgery
mulholland drive (2001) - in classic david lynch style, a weird mystery/noir film about an aspiring actress who comes into contact with and tries to help a beautiful woman with amnesia, as well as a bunch of other weird stuff. don't watch if you like your movies to be wrapped up nicely with a bow
disobedience (2018) - rachel weisz and rachel mcadams play two women reconnecting in a strict orthadox jewish community after many years apart
the favourite (2018) - rachel weisz hates playing straight people pt. 2 in this period piece surrounding two cousins who do whatever they must to be queen anne’s favourite
the imitation game (2014) - historical drama about alan turing and his work in attempting to create a machine to decode enigma messages during world war ii
booksmart (2019) - another coming of age story about women, for women, by women, in which two best friends try to fit all their high school partying into the night before graduation
if a movie isn’t on here its just that a) I didn’t really like it, b) I haven't seen it (like in the case of moonlight) or c) the plot did not primarily centre on queer characters or queerness in general
also some of these are for sure at least lightly problematic, especially the older ones, but in general I tried to put ones that don’t make me feel like trash or that were more interesting than they were painful

A bunch of memes/games I’ve been tagged in over the last couple of days under the cut, but one that I’ll leave out:
I was tagged by @banashee and @drbobbimorse for this:
Are you staying home from school/work? I’m unemployed, so mostly staying at home. We don’t even have to apply to jobs to get our unemployment benefits right now, so I’m focusing on other stuff to get more things on my CV.
If you’re staying home, who is there with you? Mom couldn’t fly back to France in March, so she’s with me, while sister comes and goes (work).
Are you a homebody? Yes! Although, I like doing things out of the house too, but with very specific people. So I’m not too bothered by staying at home.
An event that you were looking forward that got canceled? I was supposed to go to France to visit my Father in March, but that was obviously canceled. I was also very bummed about No Time To Die being postponed, I was really, really looking forward to that.
What movies have you watched recently? I watched Alita: Battle Angel and that was.... not interesting. Then I watched the live action Aladdin, and that was okay. Then I’ve also watched Mary Poppins Returns and that wasn’t my style at all. I’ve also watched A Simple Favor, and I liked it a lot. We’ve also tried Stan and Laurel, but haven’t finished it. I also watched the “Inside: The Mega Twister” NatGeo documentary on the El Reno 2013 tornado.
What shows are you watching? None, except the Danish version of Alone which I just finished watching.
What music are you listening to? The usual stuff.
What are you reading? I’ve been re-reading True Love’s Kiss by @vinnie2757 and you all should read it because it’s magnificent. I also have some books on geopolitics in Greenland during the cold war lying around but... fic wins.
What are you doing for self-care? Taking Google certifications to boost my CV and working my ass off to help save one of my favorite museums.

People are saying h worked his tour around louis’ ..... your thoughts? (Just in general, not re larry)
I don’t think Harry posted tour info yet ?
If he did, maybe it is to maximize the number of people who can attend both tours.
Last year, after tour, Harry went on vacation to Italy for weeks, then Google Camp and the Royal wedding with Ben / Jeff/ James, then vacation time with the Gerbers in LA. He worked on his album, dressed up as Elton John, hung out with Kaia Gerber, and then spent Louis’ birthday in Japan, and his own as well. HS2 was well on its way to being written and finished while Louis was tweeting “soon” to his fans for the thousandth time.
Meanwhile, Louis did TXF for six months and Fizzy was hospitalized and then flown abroad for rehab. Louis went to the Walk of Fame ceremony with his buds Simon Cowell and Rob Stringer. Harry was mostly out of the country.
Harry went to art galleries and hung out with Camille’s friends, planned for the Met Gala, shot Gucci ads, went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hung out with Kaia again on the beach in Malibu. Then went to Italy to shoot some more ads, then planned RS, The Face, Gucci perfume, fashion shows, etc.
You can compare timelines from 2018-19 and just see whether it’s likely Harry would plan tour around Louis in 2020.

Forget those ‘Queen split’ stories - everything is just lovely. Elton is lovely as well. Freddie Mercury tells it like it is. By Julie Webb
It’s easy to understand how “Queen to split” rumours get under way. The band’s expected large summer gig never happened and the non-appearance of either an album or a single kept the silence at deafening point.
From America we heard that Brian May was offered a job with Sparks and in England there were stories to the effect that the band’s management situation was none too amicable. And throughout all this time the band remained stumm, giving no interviews and neither confirming or denying anything. Even a promised visit to see the band at Rockfield Studios was “put off” at the last moment. Is all well in Mercury’s trousers?
Still, all is now resolved. Queen now have a new manager, and their biggest headache in How The Hell Are They Going To Finish The New Album in time for November release. They are also planning a major British tour for late November and a single for October, so it’s time to zip up and get going.
It was three dishevelled members of Queen who were finally brought to bay at the studios in London. John Deacon was absent since they were adding vocals and I was informed he doesn’t participate overly on that side of things. Two members of Hustler - a quite different group - were sitting in the control room aghast at the meticulous way the band record.
If they sand “no no no” once, they sang it twenty times in the space of about ten minutes. And on each occasion someone would find fault. It must get exceedingly tedious.
The track in question is a Mercury composition “Bohemian Rhapsody” very much an operatic opus, taxing the vocal cords to the hilt. On playback it sounds truly magnificent, undeniably Queen yet with greater depth than on any previous efforts.
Mercury is bouncing about saying “Hello dear” to new arrivals. Brian May still looks fragile and Roger Taylor sits down rather wearily. They are scheduled to carry on recording till two a.m.
Mercury seems like he’s itching to talk and, yes, there’s plenty to ask. Like what happened with the old management, Freddie?
He takes a deep breath.
“As far as Queen are concerned they are deceased. They cease to exist in any capacity with us whatsoever. One leaves them behind like one leaves excretia. We feel so relieved.”
It appears to be an almost rehearsed answer. I plod on. How did the change of management come about - why change?
“We felt there came a time when we had got far too big for them to handle. We needed bigger handling. We needed a change. But I don’t want to delve into trivia…”
And on so to John Reid, new manager, also manager of Elton John.
“Actually we were approached by - and we ourselves approached - a series of top class managers to make sure we made the right choice. John Reid happened to be the choice because he flashed his eyes at me and I said ‘Why not’,” Mercury laughs.
“He’s great, actually, I thought he could do with another piano player so we could play duets all night. I said ‘What’s better than one piano player? - two piano players. In a way it’s just what we wanted and the combination is going to be startling. It’s the sort of combination we’ve wanted for years. The whole situation of record deals and his whole method of work, his whole approach is so right.
“He came in to negotiate the whole structure of recording, publishing and management.”
Mercury was present at the recent much-publicised John Reid birthday party last week (“we’re both Virgos you know”). This he pronounced “lovely”.
“I met his ‘other client’. He said ‘You must meet my other client, my other client wants to meet you.’ Elton John was wonderful - one of those people you can instantly get on with. He said he liked ‘Killer Queen’ and anyone who says that goes in my white book - my black book is bursting at the seams.”
The subject switched to the new album. Apart from the aforementioned “Bohemian Rhapsody” what other tracks are there?
“Well the album is called ‘A Night At The Opera’. We’ve finished all the backing tracks and it’s beginning to sound better than we expected.
“With ‘Rhapsody’ we’ve squeezed to our limitations for four octaves and not slowed down the tape! John Deacon had written a lovely little ditty called ‘You’re My Best Friend’ and Roger has written ‘I’m In Love With My Car’ including lines like ‘I’ve got a feel for my automobile’.
“Brian has an outrageous mammoth epic track ‘The Prophet’s Song’ which is one of our heaviest numbers to date. He’s got his guitar extravaganza on it. You see, Brian has acquired a new guitar specially built so he can almost make it speak. It will talk on this track.
“Then there’s ‘Good Company’ written by Brian, a George Formby track with saxophones, trombone and clarinet sounds from his guitar. We don’t believe in having any session men, we do everything ourselves, from the high falsetto to the low bassy farts it is all us.
“Another track is ‘’39’ a little spacey number by Brian, a skiffle style of number which we’ve never tried before and the albume ends with something totally unexpected, a little virtuoso track by Brian. There’s also ‘Sweet Lady’ a heavyish ditty in stupendous ¾.”
Apart from ‘Rhapsody’, Mercury himself has penned four tracks, “one is called ‘Death On Two Legs’ I’m not going to say anymore - just listen to the words carefully kiddies. A nasty little number which brings out my evil streak. The words came very easy to me.
“There’s also a lovely little ballad, my classical influence comes into it, Brian is going to attempt to use harp, real life-size harp. I’m going to force him to play till his fingers drop off. It’s called ‘Love Of My Life’.
“‘Seaside Rendezvous’ has a 1920’s feel to it and Roger does a tuba and clarinet on it vocally, if you see what I mean. I’m going to make him tap dance too, I’ll have to buy him some Ginger Rogers tap shoes.
“‘Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon’ (not the Kinks’ or the Small Faces’) is a short track, just one minute six seconds. A very perky spicey number dear. Brian likes that one.”
Summing up, Mercury says “There were a lot of things we wanted to do on ‘Queen II’ and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ but there wasn’t space enough. This time there is. Guitarwise and on vocals we’ve done things we’ve never done before.”
In order to finish the album on time Mercury says they will “work till we are legless. I’ll sing until my throat is like a vulture’s crotch. We haven’t even reached the halfway stage yet but from the things I can hear we have surpassed anything we’ve done before musically.”
All right. Now to the other stuff.
Is it true about Brian being offered a gig with Sparks? Was there any serious thought of splitting up the band? Own up…
Mercury is contemptuous of the whole thing.
“About nine months ago Brian was approached by Sparks who said they would like him to join them as guitarist. But we all treat that sort of thing as everyday and mundane. We’re so involved in what we do - anyway we’ve all had offers to join other bands. We don’t give it a second thought.
“But while, say, Roger and I would tell them to piss off Brian takes his time about being nice to people so sometimes they get the wrong idea. Brian is really too much of a gentleman which I am not - I am an old tart - but not for one moment did he consider leaving us.
“But that was nine months ago, so long ago that that rumour went out with the Boer War. Still it’s very flattering to get offers.”
The November British tour, however should dispel any split rumours forever. Preparations are already being made for that.
“I’m thinking of being carried on stage by Nubian slaves and being fanned by them - in fact I’m auditioning for them now. I shall personally select the winners. But where to find a slave?
“I’m also looking for a masseur. The other one is no longer with us.
What happened to him? “His fingers dropped off.”
Trouble with Freddie, he’s always concerned with his health. Still there are reasons.
On the last American tour a couple of gigs were cancelled due to throat problems.
“My nodules are still with me. I have these uncouth callouses growing in my interior (throat). From time to time they harm my vocal dexterity. At the moment however” (he allows himself a smile) “I am winning/”
How can he ensure the problem won’t recur?
“I’m going to go easy on the red wine dear. And the tour will be planned around my nodules. Actually I came very near to having an operation but I didn’t like the look of the doctor and I was a bit perturbed about having strange instruments forced down my throat.”
After the British tour the band go once again to America and thence on to Japan. Japan hold fond memories for Mercury.
With a faraway look in his eye he say “I will be able to be reunited with my bodyguard. I must stress we all had one each - our own personal bodyguards that is. Mine was called Hitami and was the head of the Tokyo bodyguard patrol. His entire job was to pamper and cossett me throughout the tour and make sure no harm was to come to my person. He was very sweet, he gave me this lovely Japanese lantern which I treasure.”
Is there any likelihood Queen may do some American gigs with Elton John?
“Well funny you should say that. We had an offer to do two gigs in L.A. but we were far too busy so we couldn’t do them. But although we’re all the same family Reidy won’t put us out as a package. He knows the difference in the audiences we appeal to. He wants us to be a force of our own in America to maintain what we have, and to do everything bigger and better.”
Mercury is not quite sure if Seattle is on their American itinerary. He remembers a young lady from that part of the world quite vividly.
“A young American tart” he starts getting very angry at the memory of it all, “came in and pilfered my contents … my jewels, bracelets etc and she was just evacuating the room when I accosted her by the elevator.
“I pulled her by the hair, dragged her into the room, emptied the contents of her bag in the room and everything but the kitchen sink came out. I retrieved my things, and said ‘get out, you Seattle shagbag.’
Why hadn’t there been any recorded material from Queen for so long? (Yeah, I know that was an abrupt change of subject).
“Actually that was the way we planned it dear, but we should have a single taken from this album out in October. The album comes out in November when we start our world tour. We’re planning on a much broader scale than before dear.”

How Queer Is Enough?
Tumblr media
It’s June, “Pride” Month, and I’m feeling the way African-Americans  do in February or Latinos do in October. While I’m grateful that “my people” get at least a month out of the year when we’re celebrated rather than demonized, I know that it won’t be long before the rainbow flags are replaced by more “Kill the Fags” graffiti and we go back to business as usual in Trump’s Amerika. But I want to actually consider the issue of just how “queer” queer artists are supposed to be, and just how much that queerness should be front and center in our perceptions of those artists.
First off, let me come out and say that I don’t buy the argument that someone’s sexuality is irrelevant to the interpretation of his/her/their work. So when John Cage died, and people (including Merce Cunningham) finally began openly discussing John’s homosexuality, Richard Kostelanetz wrote an article saying that if Cage had been concerned about sexuality, or it had any relevance to his work, he would have said something. What Kostelanetz failed to recognize is that Cage’s “silence” on the topic was, perhaps, the most powerful way he had to address it, considering he divorced his wife to live with another man at a time when homosexuality was illegal in most states. A similar discussion happened after the death of Aaron Copland: was “the Dean of American” composers queer (yep), and was it relevant to how we listen to his music (well, for me, that would be another yep). The same for Benjamin Britten, and many others.
This is true of musicians, certainly, but also of visual artists, writers, dancers, etc. For example, I find a poetry in Jasper Johns’ work that, for me, is closely tied to him being queer. Ditto for Robert Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly (and yeah, yeah, talk to me about their wives, etc.), and Ellsworth Kelly. Kelly’s a good case in point: his work is relentlessly abstract and minimal. How can his sexuality be relevant to it? I just know I see something different in it knowing that Kelly was queer.
Tumblr media
This has been on my mind after seeing two films this week: “White Crow,” the biopic about Rudolph Nureyev’s decision to defect to the West in 1961, and “Rocketman,” the campy musical story of the life of Elton John. Both of these films set out to tell the life story of two very famous artists, both of whom were/are queer. So let me return to my opening question: how queer is enough?
I was hoping that “White Crow” would be open about Nureyev’s homosexuality. I mean, I don’t think it was a secret, by any means. So a film about a gay ballet dancer you’d think wouldn’t have a problem with depicting his gayness. But not so much. There were a few meaningful looks between Rudy and other men, and one scene (exactly one) where we see him naked in bed with another man. I understand if the filmmakers (notably director Ralph Fiennes) wanted to focus on other factors that provoked Nureyev into defecting, and not just on his sexuality. So I’m left with the feeling that some combination of his sad, lonely childhood, his fondness for French paintings, and his own inner crankiness prompted his flight to artistic freedom in 1961. His fondness for sleeping with men wasn’t a factor. In fact, he had an affair with his teacher’s wife. I don’t know, but the movie seems to be trying hard to “butch up” a dancer that was famous for being ravenously sexual. So, for my taste, “White Crow” wasn’t nearly queer enough.
“Rocketman,” on the other hand, was dealing with a performer from the heyday of Glam Rock, who was known for his outrageous costumes and over-the-top performances, the Liberace of rock and roll if you will. Moreover, the fact that the film is treated like a Hollywood musical, where much of the action is conveyed through song and dance numbers, throws open the doors of camp in a way that seems to just scream queerness at you. I never thought I’d see someone having his stomach pumped turned into a dance number.
Well, methinks the lady doth protest too much. “Rocketman” is part of the Hollywood tradition that seems to feel that gay characters are best played by straight actors. Nothing at all against Taron Egerton, or Richard Maddon, but I think there might have been something to be said for having queer actors in these parts. I feel the way Native Americans must feel when they’re portrayed by Italians. The director couldn’t find a gay musical theater actor for the part? Hello???
It only starts to annoy me when I see endless interviews with Egerton and Maddon, talking about their “sex scene” in the film, and how very open-minded they are about doing that scene, despite the fact that they’re straight. And that sex scene was pretty minimal as well. “Groundbreaking!” the press declares. Meh - not nearly queer enough. And lest it seem I’m picking on this film, I could also talk about “Call Me By Your Name,” where again the actual sex was not depicted, and the straight actors gave tons of interviews where they could laugh and joke about making out with each other despite the fact that they’re straight. Or “Brokeback Mountain,” where again the fuss was about two straight men in a film about queer men struggling with their sexual attraction.
A last word of defense: I’m not saying that every film about a gay man (or lesbian) has to be filled with graphic sex scenes. I just wish that I could watch a film about “my people” and feel like I was really seeing myself reflected in the film, instead of encountering a funhouse mirror, where my reflection is the distortion of what straight people seem to think it means to be “gay.” And for all those queer artists, musicians, etc. out there, who worry that being open about their sexuality in their work somehow lessens its “universality,” I can only say, if you don’t represent your people to the world, who the fuck will?

Friday 9/20: I took a half day at work that day because I needed to do things before going to Canada for the weekend. I woke up at my usual time (around 5:45am) and I was planning to stay till 11ish, but I wanted to leave sooner so I left around 10:30. When I woke up that morning, I was debating to even go, but I decided to just do it even though it was 3 hours and I didn’t feel like using my PTO either. I met up with Gerwin at my house and we arrived around the same time. We wanted to see the iPhone 11 first so we took a quick trip to Bellevue Square and there was a long line outside the store because people preordered the phone at the preorder day. Gerwin and I were amazed at how Apple designed the new iPhones this year. During the Keynote, I didn’t like how the cameras were designed but when we tested out the camera, oh man it was amazing and it made me want it even more. I loved the matte glass on the back of the phone and the white looked so good. After about 20 minutes at the store, Gerwin and I grabbed lunch at the mall before heading back to my house cause he needed to go to work and his shift started at 3pm. While he was at work, I was able to finish packing and cleaned my room for a bit because he was coming back to stay for the night so that way he didn’t have to wake up extra early to come back to my house before we go to Canada. He got off work around 11:30pm and got to my house around 12am. The many years we’ve been together, it was Gerwin’s first time staying the night at my house lol but it’s okay because I haven’t spent the night at his house either.
Saturday 9/21: We planned to leave early that morning like around 9:30ish or 10, but we didn’t end up leaving till around 11:30 lol. My mom went to church for a bit and she didn’t get home till around 10. My dad had to work the night before and he works a 12 hour shift so he didn’t get home till around 8ish and he wanted to sleep for a bit before we leave. Usually for trips like this, especially if it’s just us 4 and we plan to stay the night, I had this plan all in my head but I already know that it’ll backfire later on and it did lol. We got to the border a little before 2 and we didn’t even wait that long, however we did got stuck in traffic heading to Vancouver. We got to the hotel around 3pm, just in time for check-in and we stayed at Element by Westin in Burnaby, just walking distance to Metrotown shopping mall. I was the one that booked our room and it was amazing. Since it was hard finding 2 beds since 90% of the hotels around the area were booked, we had no choice but luckily, the room I booked for us included a sofa bed so my parents stayed there while Gerwin and I got the room. Our room was so nice and it had an amazing view of the city. Every room at Element included a mini kitchen which was amazing because my dad gets hungry at night. After settling in, we went to a Filipino restaurant in Vancouver to eat late lunch and early dinner. When we finished, we went back to the hotel so my parents could get ready for the Elton John’s farewell tour concert that I got tickets for them last year. We dropped them off around 6:45 and me and Gerwin hung out around downtown for a little bit since we don’t feel like going back to the hotel just yet. I wanted dessert and missed Cacao 70 and luckily, there was a location near Pacific Centre. We got The Camp Out which had everything – waffle, brownies, whipped cream, chocolate and caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream with a chocolate cone! We got really full afterwards. Once we were done, we decided to head back to the hotel and chill in the room for the remainder of the night. It was a good thing we did because it started to rain when we got back to the car and then kept raining throughout the night. We waited for my parents to come back which was around midnight cause they took the Skytrain.
Sunday 9/22: I woke up around 8am because I wanted to take advantage of the free breakfast the hotel offered. Gerwin and I woke up around the same time and we got dressed and headed to the 5th floor where the breakfast buffet was at. They had everything – cereal, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, sausages, baked potatoes, pastries, bagels, sliced bread, etc. I took the usual eggs, sausages, bagels and apple juice. My parents came down 20 minutes later when me and Gerwin were just finishing up. I wanted to take a video of the food, but there was a lot of people. Once we all finished, we went back to the room to shower and get ready and checked out around 11am. Before heading home, we went to my relatives’ house to chill and watch the Seahawks game before heading home. We left during the 2 minute warning and didn’t get home till around 7:30. We took a break for a bit before heading to Gerwin’s house for the rest of the night.~
The weekend was much needed and I hoped that it went longer instead of just a day, but my parents and Gerwin had work today. Luckily, I took an extra day off so I’ll be back at work tomorrow. Boo.~

From @yesbleublue :
Hello!! First off, thank you so much for maintaining this amazing blog and for being so kind and warm to every fan- the old and the new! I discovered the band literally 10yrs ago when i was a senior in HS but wasn’t really a “fan” then. Like many people here, i became OBSESSED with them after the movie and perhaps spend the last 2weeks reading and watching every interview, documentaries, articles, etc about them. Anyway!! Sorry for too much enthusiasm..
.. (2- cont) but you as a long-time queen fan, i want to ask your views and opinions about certain things. What do you think of the relationship between the band? I get it that every band (or literally any people working together) have their ups and downs, especially with such intellectual and talented people like them.. but i’ve read in some forums that says nobody should really consider them as “friends” because the relationship between them are purely professional anyway..
.. (3- cont) it kind of made me feel sad idk lol sorry and like there are lots of people trashing on brian and roger for continuing with queen and accusing them of “milking” the profits and drunk with fame etc etc which kind of makes me sad because brian became my favorite in the band (yea ofc everyone’s fave is freddie) and like the more interviews of him that i watch and read, the more i admire the man. he just looks like a very gentle soul who’s very protective of the legacy of fred and..
.. (4-cont) and was very respectful and understanding of fred’s privacy even after his passing (part of me believes that it’s the reason why they removed SBC to play freddie in the movie because i think they understood that fred doesn’t want to “only” be portrayed with his “wild lifestyle” his debauchery.. i know the films has lots of inaccuracies etc but i truly see it as a celebration of how amazing fred as a musician, alongside with the rest of the band).. so i dont get all the brian hate..
.. (5- cont) which brings me to my second question, what do you think of bri and roger’s decision to continue with the band? brian said multiple times that he knows freddie would love it (and even said that he would’ve liked adam), but i just dont know why some people kept on trashing the remaining members of the band, some even goes on saying “the lead singer is dead so the band should die to”. i mean, there are ALL so equally talented, even freddie admits that he isn’t the leader of the band..
..(6- cont) (wasn’t* i mean) ok sorry this ask went on and on and kind of became rant-ish as well. i understand if you refuse to answer but thanks for reading this far. Thanks again for this beautiful blog. I’d been scrolling for hours *heart*
--
Thank you for the compliment! And your enthusiasm isn't too much, don't worry :-)
The relationship with the band... Who the hell told you they shouldn't be considered friends?? That's so ridiculous! Brian and Roger are DEFINITELY really close friends and continue to have a great working relationship, and the band was clearly really tight in the last few years with Freddie. From what I've heard, John isn't especially warm and fuzzy toward Brian and Roger these days, but I don't think there's any animosity there. Brian and Roger still seek out John's input and blessing on projects, and I think it's just a thing where everyone wants to give John the space and quiet he wants.
Yes, there are TONS of people who believe that Queen should have stopped after Freddie - and Brian and Roger agreed with that for a few years despite Freddie telling them that they could carry on without him! But they eventually decided that they wanted to continue, and John gave his approval, and people who take issue are welcome to not participate. Even when Brian and Roger do things that aren't my cup of tea, I'm glad that they want to continue with Queen. I'm glad that they're always trying to engage and appeal to new generations of fans because it's what they love. Those who take issue are just a very vocal minority who refuse to notice that Brian, Roger, and Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert ARE honoring Freddie. They would probably rip apart Freddie's own mother if given the chance, so I don't take that crowd seriously.
I think Adam is a great fit for Queen. Not just because he's very obviously influenced by Freddie, but because he just happens to be a great fit all on his own. I didn't hate when they worked with Paul Rodgers, but it showed me that decent musical chemistry and common ground only goes so far. For Queen to really truly work, there needs to also be camp, theatricality, and queer energy to tie it all together. See also, George Michael singing Somebody To Love, and Elton John singing The Show Must Go On.

Every year on the first weekend of May the Festival of Muses takes place within the Crescent Garden.  Before the festival became popular, it featured primarily smaller known musicians and artists.  However, now the festival tends to have one or two big features every night and ending with a well-known headliner.  This event is not just about the art, but about spreading positive vibes. It is welcome to all and its aim is to connect back to mother earth through the arts. For those who have anxiety or sensory issues, there are little quiet areas that have spells cast over it so a wix will not be able to see or hear what is going outside.
It was unknown if the festival would happen this year due to the events at the New York Ghost Gala, however, those in charge of the event stated that the festival is needed now more than ever.  Those in law enforcement are required to attend to make sure events do not repeat themselves.  As a thank you, they are offered VIP access for one day of their choosing.
There is an option to camp just outside the venue, a tradition that its founder started. Most tend to partake in this tradition, however, there are those who would rather stay at a hotel within the  Wintervale District (note this is one of the richest districts and is well known for this). Those who do decide to camp out can experience communal cooking, art activities, and recreational potion making.
Along with music, there are various art installations set up throughout the festival. This is a big way for smaller artists to get exposure and have little shops to sell their items. There are various art contests with the most popular contest being art made out of recycled materials.
Like most events within the wix community, there will be a best dressed and worst dressed article in the paper along with a few undercover reporters who want to get a real scoop.
NOTE: these artists are parallel to the irl musicians, and they bring an “i’ve heard this before” thought to those who are of non-magic lineage or listen to non-magic music. however, their faces can still be used within the rp. you are free to reference fictional groups not listed here, or join as a member of one of these groups.

This event will take place via the weekend. All media, mood boards, fashion examples, etc, should be tagged under mcusa.event001. If you are reblogging something that is fashion related please tag the main as we will be doing an article within the New York Ghost on the best and worst dressed. We will be having a small plot drop after this event. If for some reason threads are not finished, you are allowed to continue the thread until it is completed.
The event will start as soon as we open, but you can post any musings beforehand ( please no starters / threads until we actually open ).
The are is set up similar to this but has various art installations and photo backdrops scattered around the area.
