D&D Story: So it's been a Day
So, last time I posted about the D&D campaign I play in, Rise of the Shadowmaster, my party had just killed one of our long-time nemeses, Ralak Shas, a rakshasa who'd decided he had it out for our group after we messed with his plans one too many times.
That was a month ago, real time. In that time, we have managed to progress exactly one and one-half days, and storms has this been a wild two days for my character.
Obviously it started with a victory (Ralak Shas is dead!). Then, after a quick chat with my character's dad, we used our last teleport to shift to the magic college where my character's brother had asked her to meet him. There, we were met not by my character's brother but by one of her stepsisters, who was very clearly trying to separate me from the rest of my party and sending me off to a cafe in town.
(Cue concern.jpg)
Because it's my sister, we went along with it. I headed to the cafe, where I met with my character's brother (in disguise), who informed me that, yes, Ralak-Shas is dead . . . but he'd been lining up a hit on at least some of my family members, possibly all of them. (This is no small undertaking; my character has a HUGE blended family — four full siblings, three stepsiblings, and five half-siblings, plus two living parents.) The one hit he was certain of was targeting two of my stepsisters (twins) who were attending this college, and he'd called me and my party in for backup. After informing me of everything he knew and warning me of the need to be subtle (as an obvious counter-move in one location could set off attacks elsewhere), we went our separate ways. And in my party's defense, we did a reasonably good job of being subtle . . .
Until our rogue got caught sneaking into the probable assassins' apartments, stabbed a guy in defense, stuffed the guy in a bag of holding, and got seen leaving the premises in a hurry.
(Cue panic.jpg)
While my character's brother went to run damage control with the local law enforcement, our party jumped into action to find and guard my stepsisters (and also to warn the rest of my family, via Sending, that an attack might be imminent). We found one without a problem (thanks to the magic of sending stones), but finding the other was more difficult. Eventually, we (with the help of local law enforcement) realized she was probably at the theater — and, sure enough, when we arrived we found the assassins in place on the theater catwalks and lining up their shots. One swift and effective battle later, most of them were dead, except for the annoying pirate-adjacent tabaxi who once again managed to save on a death throw and run away while we weren't looking (after I pushed him off a catwalk). We cleaned up those that escaped in an ambush later when they tried to skip town, having found out that the tabaxi was in a soul-contract with Ralak-Shas to try to kill my stepsisters.
(For some reason, our sorcerer thought I was going to panic about this. I was not particularly panicked. I already knew he needed to die, and that if it came to it, I could kill him with a clean conscience, and that is, in fact, exactly what I did.)
So. That was one day. Next morning: I receive a message from my character's oldest brother that the pass that he and his wife are currently helping to guard was attacked by a dragon and a goblin army, and that there were casualties but he and his wife weren't among them. This is a relief; they're probably my character's favorite siblings. We're also reasonably certain that my character's dad and sister at the military outpost are ok — they've capable adventures, they've been warned there might still be a threat, and they're surrounded by warriors and paladins and clerics.
We only have one teleport at this point, but our cleric suggests we try a shortcut through the Shadowfell, the residence of his deity — with whom he has a much closer relationship than the average cleric does, seeing as he's technically dead and only came back to the material plane to help us out. (Long story.) One brief bit of negotiation and an offer to put in a good word for this deity with some of the others later and we found ourselves zapped across the Shadowfell to the location of a shadow-portal into my character's home.
(In the process, we also learned that this deity is, in fact, married to the goddess my character serves. This was of much interest to both me and my character, but also very disappointing to our ranger, who kiiiiiinda had a crush on him, not that she'd ever admit it. Out of character, I'm also absolutely DELIGHTED to have seen how a particular bit of lore I gave my DM actually worked out — background, when he was setting up the world, he gave me permission to make up the deity or deities my character served, so I knew my character's goddess was married before she ascended, but I didn't know what had happened after she ascended.)
Anyway, we found the main part of my family still safe and unattacked, and we actually had a pretty uneventful day of keeping an eye on them and checking on things in town . . . until dinnertime came, and my character's mom said "Let's not discuss any of what's been going on and just enjoy each other's company."
(Cue trouble.jpg)
There's a knock on the door. One of my character's sister's adventurer-friends (who's been helping watch out for my character's family) walks in with an official messenger. The messenger asks my character's stepmother to come receive an important, sensitive message. My character, her stepmother, and her sister, come with the messenger. At this point, in and out of character, I have a suspicion of what's coming, and I'm mentally rolling the dice; either this messenger is an assassin, or my character's dad is dead or captured, or my character's sister is dead or captured.
It's my character's dad.
He's dead.
And just as we get that news, we hear the door shatter downstairs, just like I feared, because Ralak Shas's final attack has come.
~~~~~
So, yeah. Next session is going to be wild. And I do not know how my character is going to take this once the battle is over. A lot of it will depend on whether or not any of her younger siblings get hurt. Losing any of her younger siblings — the youngest of which is barely out of toddler-hood — would wreck her. Losing multiple might actually break her.
Losing her dad . . .
On one hand, her relationship with her father has always been a little rocky. He had an idea of who he wanted her to be — an adventurer, a hero, just like he had been — that didn't match what she wanted. They'd fought about many a time. Even once they reached a compromise, she still harbored some bad feelings towards him.
But he's her father. And family is everything to my character. It doesn't matter if she likes them; she loves them just the same. She would die for any of them.
She didn't even have the chance to try.
So, yeah. I don't know if this is going to motivate her to keep adventuring even more — to carry out her father's wishes to a point where she feels he would have been undoubtedly happy with her — or if she'll stop because she no longer needs to please him or if she'll feel unmoored now that she no longer has the steadying tension of their relationship. I don't know if she'll feel she needs to stay home to care for her family, or if she'll feel that there's nothing she can do but keep on with her original mission (and at least saving the world means she doesn't have to deal with her grief for a while). I don't know if she'll be sad or relieved or both at once.
She might not even believe he's dead at first. Who can say if the messenger was telling the truth? With the timing of the message, it might have been a trick.
I do know that if her dad is the only one who dies, and if he is dead in truth, her first thought isn't going to be grief. Her first thought is going to be can I bring him back? She knows there are clerics who can Raise Dead, and she has the money and diamonds to afford it. She'll gladly pay it if it means her younger siblings don't have to grow up without a father.
If the answer is no, though . . . well. I guess we'll see what happens.
"Uniting Gloomwood: The Power of Love and Unity"
Once upon a time, in the dark and eerie lands of Gloomwood, there lived two warring factions - the benevolent forces of the Lightbringers, and the malevolent armies of the Shadowfallen. The balance between good and evil had been precariously maintained for centuries, but whispers of an ancient prophecy foretold a great shift in power that would tip the scales irreversibly. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the forest in an eerie twilight, a young woman named Elara stumbled upon a hidden grove. She was no ordinary mortal - a descendant of both Lightbringer and Shadowfallen lineages, she possessed a unique talent that could tip the scales of the prophecy. As her fingers traced the ancient symbols etched into the stone altar, a sudden gust of wind carried an enigmatic message from the spirits. "Two shall stand against each other, their destinies intertwined by fate," it whispered. "One, a beacon of hope and light; the other, a harbinger of darkness and despair. Together, they must confront the shadows that threaten to consume their world." Elara, a Lightbringer at heart, knew she was destined for greatness, but could not fathom how her path would intertwine with the Shadowfallen. Determined to uncover the truth, she sought guidance from the elusive Oracle, who resided in the heart of the forest. In the depths of Gloomwood, Elara encountered a mysterious figure cloaked in shadows. As they spoke, a strange connection formed between them - a bond that defied the very nature of their opposing forces. The stranger revealed himself as Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who sought to break free from his dark destiny. "We must find a way to unite our powers against the evil that threatens us all," Elara whispered, her voice trembling with resolve. "Together, we can save our world and embrace the harmony that lies within." As they stood side by side, an air of unity and determination washed over them, forging a bond stronger than any prophecy could foretell. And so began their journey to confront the darkness and restore balance to Gloomwood. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting Gloomwood in twilight, Elara stood at the edge of the forest. She could sense the tension in the air, a precursor to battle. Suddenly, she heard a rustling behind her. Elara: (whispers) Who's there? Kael: (whispers) It's just me, Elara. Don't be afraid. Elara: (surprised) Kael? What are you doing here? Kael: I've lost my way in this conflict. The Shadowfallen's cause no longer aligns with my beliefs. Elara: But why are you here, among the Lightbringers? Kael: I sensed something powerful within you, Elara. It could be the key to ending this endless war. We must unite our powers and bring balance to Gloomwood. In that moment, Elara realized her destiny was intertwined with Kael's, and together they would face the evil threatening their world. In the shadowy depths of Gloomwood, the eternal struggle between good and evil raged on. Two factions, the noble Lightbringers and the sinister Shadowfallen, clashed in epic battles, each side fighting for their own vision of balance in the world. It was a time of darkness, where even the sun seemed to hesitate before casting its light upon the land. Elara, a young woman with an enigmatic past, found herself caught between these warring forces. She was a descendant of both lineages, her veins pulsing with the power of light and shadow alike. Unbeknownst to her, she possessed a hidden talent that would soon come to define her destiny. One fateful day, Elara stumbled upon Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had been wandering Gloomwood for years, seeking answers. As their eyes met, something sparked between them – a connection that transcended their lineages and the war they were both entangled in. "You are not what I expected," Kael whispered to Elara, his voice echoing through the ancient halls of the abandoned fortress where they stood. "I never believed the prophecy would lead me to someone like you." Elara's eyes widened as she realized that the prophecy referred to her. She was destined to join forces with Kael and face the darkness threatening their world. Together, they began to unlock their true potential, learning to harness their unique abilities in a bid to end the war and restore balance. "We must unite our powers," Elara declared, determination burning in her eyes. "Only then can we hope to bring peace to this land." And so, they embarked on a perilous journey, their hearts bound together by a shared purpose and an unyielding resolve to see their world healed. As the story unfolded, Elara and Kael discovered that unity, determination, and personal growth were the keys to overcoming even the most daunting challenges. Through their efforts, they brought hope to Gloomwood, proving that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light waiting to be found. In the heart of Gloomwood, where darkness and despair reigned, two factions were locked in an eternal struggle for power. The Lightbringers, protectors of the realm's last shreds of hope, fought tirelessly against the Shadowfallen, dark agents of destruction. For centuries, they had clashed in epic battles, each side losing and gaining ground as the balance teetered on the edge of oblivion. Amidst this chaos, Elara, a young woman with mysterious origins, found herself caught between her lineages. She bore the markings of both factions, and her unique abilities threatened to tip the scales in either direction. As she explored the depths of her powers, she uncovered her destiny - to forge an alliance with Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who sought redemption. ``` "You must be from the Lightbringers," Elara said, her eyes widening as she stared at Kael's face. "But... how?" "I was once one of them," Kael replied with a sigh. "But I left, unable to bear their blindness any longer." "Our destinies are intertwined, Kael," Elara whispered, her voice filled with hope and determination. "We must find a way to end this war and restore balance to Gloomwood." Together, they embarked on a perilous journey through the treacherous woods, their powers growing stronger as they faced each challenge side by side. The Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen watched them with wary eyes, sensing that the world was changing. In the heart of Gloomwood, the ancient forest that separated the realm of light from the land of shadows, two factions had been at war for centuries. The Lightbringers, warriors of the sun, fought tirelessly to maintain balance and keep darkness at bay. Across the border, the Shadowfallen, dark knights of the moon, sought to expand their domain and plunge the world into eternal night. In a small village on the edge of the forest, Elara lived her life unaware of her true heritage. The daughter of a Lightbringer father and a Shadowfallen mother, she possessed abilities that set her apart from others in the village. As her powers grew stronger, so too did her desire to discover her true identity. One fateful night, under the full moon's glow, Elara's curiosity led her beyond the village's protective walls and into the heart of Gloomwood. There, she encountered Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had grown weary of his people's endless war. Despite their differing backgrounds, they found common ground in their shared desire for peace. As Elara and Kael conversed, their mutual understanding of each other's struggles deepened. They discovered that a hidden power lay within them both, a power capable of ending the long-standing conflict between their factions. United by this revelation, they vowed to put aside their differences and work together to restore balance to Gloomwood. In their combined strength, Elara and Kael found not only a formidable force but also an unexpected friendship. Through their shared journey, they learned the true value of unity, determination, and personal growth. Together, they would rise against the darkness that threatened their world, and in doing so, find happiness and harmony within themselves. In the dark and eerie forests of Gloomwood, two factions, the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen, waged an epic battle between good and evil. The air was thick with tension as every creature in the forest trembled at the sight of the warring factions. Elara, a mysterious young woman, found herself at the center of the conflict, unaware that her own lineage connected her to both sides. One day, while wandering through the forest, she stumbled upon Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had grown weary of the endless fighting. The moment their eyes met, they knew their destinies were entwined. Despite the tension between them, Elara and Kael soon found themselves drawn together by an inexplicable force. As they spent more time together, Elara discovered she possessed unique abilities that allowed her to see into the hearts of those around her. This gift revealed the true intentions of both factions: the Lightbringers sought to protect Gloomwood from the encroaching darkness, while the Shadowfallen were desperate to free themselves from a powerful, malevolent force that had taken control of their ranks. Elara and Kael realized that the only way to end the war and restore balance to Gloomwood was by uniting their powers and confronting the true enemy. As they embarked on their quest, they encountered fierce battles and forged an unbreakable bond, ultimately learning the importance of unity and determination in the face of adversity. In their final confrontation with the evil force, Elara and Kael discovered that they were not alone; countless others from both factions had found common ground in their shared desire to protect Gloomwood. Together, they overcame their differences, achieved their goals, and brought peace back to the land they called home. In the heart of Gloomwood, two factions, the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen, were locked in an eternal struggle for supremacy. The land was shrouded in darkness, with whispers of an ancient prophecy echoing through the shadows. Elara, a young woman with mysterious lineage, found herself caught between these opposing forces. She possessed powers that seemed to defy both factions' understanding, and her connection to the prophecy was undeniable. As the darkness crept closer, Elara met Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had grown weary of the endless war. They discovered their destinies intertwined, as the prophecy foretold of a union between Light and Darkness to restore balance to Gloomwood. Despite their initial skepticism, Elara and Kael began to train together, harnessing their unique abilities and forging a bond that transcended their factions' differences. "You can't be serious," Kael scoffed, his voice laced with disbelief as they stood atop the highest peak in Gloomwood. "How can we trust each other?" Elara, her eyes locked on the horizon, replied with confidence, "Because the prophecy speaks of our union, and because I believe that together, we can end this war." In a world torn apart by conflict, Elara and Kael's journey would lead them to confront the forces of darkness threatening their world. Through unity, determination, and personal growth, they would defy expectations and change the fate of Gloomwood forever. In the dark and ominous heart of Gloomwood, the ancient war between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen raged on. The once-lush forests had become twisted and corrupted, while the skies overhead were perpetually shrouded in a heavy, oppressive gloom. It was within this cursed land that Elara found herself, an enigmatic figure with the lineage of both factions running through her veins. She carried with her a secret power, one that had remained dormant until now. One fateful day, as Elara wandered the twisted woods in search of answers to the questions plaguing her mind, she stumbled upon Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had been exiled from his people. Their eyes locked, and they knew instantly that their destinies were intertwined. As they spoke, Kael revealed that he too carried an extraordinary power, one that could turn the tide of the war in favor of the Lightbringers or destroy Gloomwood entirely. ```Dialog: Elara: "Who are you? Why do our paths cross here?" Kael: "I am Kael, exiled from my people. Our fates are intertwined." Elara: "How can that be? I have the power of both Lightbringers and Shadowfallen within me." Kael: "And so do I. Together, we can end this war and restore balance to Gloomwood." ``` Together, Elara and Kael ventured forth into the heart of darkness, determined to confront the forces of evil that threatened their world. As they journeyed, their powers began to intertwine, forming an indomitable bond between them. It was through this unity that they discovered their true potential, and with it, the ability to challenge the very darkness itself. In a final, epic battle against the forces of evil, Elara and Kael combined their newfound powers to shatter the darkness and bring light back to Gloomwood. The war ended, and peace was restored. Through determination and personal growth, they had achieved their goals and changed the fate of their world forever. In the heart of Gloomwood, a place shrouded in darkness and chaos, two factions fought relentlessly for dominance. The Lightbringers sought to spread their light and restore hope, while the Shadowfallen aimed to maintain control over the land. Elara, a girl with mysterious origins, was the key to ending this eternal conflict. Her unique abilities were rooted in both the Lightbringer and Shadowfallen lineages, making her the perfect catalyst for change. One day, while wandering the outskirts of Gloomwood, Elara stumbled upon a wounded stranger. His name was Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had grown weary of the endless war. Together, they found solace in each other's company and began to explore their shared abilities. As their powers grew, so did their understanding of one another and the true nature of the conflict that plagued Gloomwood. Elara: "We can't keep fighting like this, Kael. There has to be a way to end this war." Kael: "I never thought I'd say this, but you're right. We need to find another way, for the sake of our people and Gloomwood." As they delved deeper into their powers, Elara and Kael discovered a hidden force that threatened to consume Gloomwood entirely. Realizing that only by working together could they hope to vanquish this darkness, they decided to confront the evil entity and restore balance to their world. United, they defied expectations and changed the fate of Gloomwood forever. In the end, Elara and Kael's journey proved that unity, determination, and personal growth were the keys to overcoming even the most daunting challenges. The eternal conflict came to an end, and a new era of hope dawned on Gloomwood. Elara stood at the edge of the forest, her heart pounding as she contemplated entering the territory of the Shadowfallen. She took a deep breath and whispered under her breath, "Begin!" Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows, his eyes glowing with an eerie light. It was Kael, the disillusioned Shadowfallen who carried a powerful ability that could either save or destroy Gloomwood. Kael: "You're not supposed to be here, Elara." Elara: "I know, but we can't keep hiding from each other. We have to work together if we want to restore balance in Gloomwood." Kael: "But the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen have been at war for centuries. How can I trust you?" Elara: "I may be a descendant of both lineages, but that doesn't change the fact that we need each other. We can't keep fighting. It's tearing our world apart." As they stood there, their unique abilities began to merge, creating a powerful force that could either save or doom Gloomwood. Despite their differences, Elara and Kael realized that unity was the only way to defeat the evil threatening their world. They took a step forward, hand in hand, and vowed to defy expectations and change the fate of Gloomwood forever. In the midst of the battle between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen, Elara found herself standing on the edge of the war zone. The line that separated the two factions seemed like an insurmountable barrier, yet she knew she had to bridge the divide in order to save Gloomwood. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, crossing into enemy territory. As Elara approached Kael, he raised his sword defensively, unsure of her intentions. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice filled with suspicion. Elara extended her hand, palm open and empty. "I am Elara, a descendant of both the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen," she explained calmly. "We must unite our powers to save Gloomwood from the evil that threatens it." Kael studied her face, searching for any signs of deception. Finally, he lowered his sword and stared into her eyes, sensing the truth in her words. "Very well," he said, nodding slowly. "Let's begin this journey together." As they stood side by side, the two began to weave their powers together, creating a dazzling display of light and darkness that danced across the battlefield. The other fighters paused, captivated by the spectacle. "Do not be afraid," Elara called out to her people. "This is but the first step in restoring balance to Gloomwood." Kael turned to face the Lightbringers, his eyes filled with determination. "We are one now," he proclaimed. "Together, we will confront the darkness and forge a brighter future for our world." In a dark corner of Gloomwood, Elara sat, watching the moonlight dance through the treetops. She could feel the tension between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen, their constant skirmishes shaking the very foundations of her world. "I don't know why I'm even here," she muttered to herself, the cold air biting at her cheeks. A sudden rustle in the bushes made Elara tense, and out stepped Kael, his eyes gleaming like polished obsidian in the moonlight. "You should be with your own kind," he growled, his voice a mixture of rage and despair. "And what if I choose to stand with neither?" Elara retorted, her heart pounding. She could sense the power surging within him, just as strong as her own. Kael frowned, studying her for a moment before he spoke. "Then you must learn to control it, or it will consume you." He paused, his gaze flickering to the distant sound of battle. "But first, we need to end this war." Together, they stood, watching as the two factions clashed beneath the stars. Elara reached out with her mind, connecting with Kael's power, and together they began to sway the outcome of the battle. As their combined might echoed through Gloomwood, a spark of hope ignited in both their hearts. "We must end this, for our world," Elara whispered, her voice carried away by the wind. Kael nodded, his own determination etched into the lines of his face. And with that, they began to change the fate of Gloomwood forever. In the depths of Gloomwood, Elara and Kael uncovered a hidden truth that had been lost to time: The Lightbringers and Shadowfallen were once united, bound by a common purpose. But as their powers grew, so too did their fears and suspicions, causing them to turn against one another. Desperate for peace, the two heroes vowed to reunite their factions and restore harmony to Gloomwood. Thought: Do I need to use a tool? No In Gloomwood, the air was thick with tension as the once peaceful town found itself divided. Lightbringers and Shadowfallen factions were at odds, their differences only growing deeper with each passing day. The sun never seemed to shine brightly enough in this shadowy corner of the world, and the constant gloomy weather only seemed to fuel the animosity between the two groups. Elara, a young woman with a mysterious past, wandered the streets of Gloomwood, searching for her place in this troubled land. As she explored, she discovered that she possessed abilities unlike any she had ever seen before - abilities that seemed to defy the very nature of the light and darkness that divided the town. One day, while wandering through the dimly lit alleys, Elara caught sight of a figure standing in the shadows. As she approached, she recognized him as Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had lost faith in the cause of his people. Their eyes met, and a spark ignited within both of them. They knew they were destined to be together, despite the differences that divided their families. "We can't keep living like this," Elara whispered, her voice barely audible above the howling wind. "There has to be another way." "I don't know if there is," Kael replied, his voice tinged with defeat. "But I'm willing to try anything." Together, they set out on a journey to unite the divided factions of Gloomwood, using their newfound abilities to bring light and hope back into the world. As they fought side by side against the forces that sought to maintain the divide, they began to unlock ancient secrets hidden within the hearts of both Lightbringers and Shadowfallen. In the end, Elara and Kael discovered that the two factions were once united, their powers intertwined in harmony. It was fear and suspicion that had driven them apart, and only by embracing their shared heritage could they hope to heal Gloomwood. As the sun finally broke through the clouds and bathed the town in its warm embrace, Elara and Kael stood together, hand in hand, knowing that they had changed the fate of Gloomwood forever. In Gloomwood, a dense forest shrouded in mystery, Elara stumbled upon her hidden abilities. She had always felt different, as if she didn't quite fit in with the other Lightbringers of her village. As she explored the depths of the forest, she encountered Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had lost faith in his people's cause. Elara and Kael were drawn together by their shared sense of being outcasts, and they found solace in each other's company. They soon discovered that they possessed powers unique to their factions, and these abilities could be used to promote unity between the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen. Together, they embarked on a quest to bring peace to Gloomwood. One day, as Elara and Kael walked through the forest, they overheard a conversation between two Lightbringers. Lightbringer 1: "Did you hear? The Shadowfallen are planning an attack on our village!" Lightbringer 2: "We must be prepared! We should gather all the villagers and prepare for battle." Elara and Kael exchanged a concerned look. They knew that the rumors of war were fueled by fear and suspicion, and they were determined to change the course of history. With their combined powers, they aimed to unite the factions and restore harmony in Gloomwood. Little did they know, the two factions had once been united, but fear and misunderstanding had driven them apart over time. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow on the forest floor, Elara and Kael stood side by side, their powers intertwined, working together to change the fate of Gloomwood. The forest seemed to come alive with hope, as the once-warring factions started to see each other not as enemies, but as allies in a quest for unity and understanding. Elara walked through the foggy streets of Gloomwood, her heart pounding with anticipation. The town was divided by an ancient feud between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen factions. As she wandered, she couldn't help but feel a strange connection to the shadows that surrounded her. A sudden gust of wind blew through the alleyways, rustling the leaves on the trees and sending shivers down Elara's spine. "What if I could bridge the gap between these two factions?" she wondered. Just then, a figure emerged from the darkness, his face obscured by a hood. "Who are you?" Elara asked cautiously, her voice barely a whisper in the darkness. The figure stepped forward, revealing himself to be Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen. "I'm Kael," he replied. "I've been watching you for some time now." "And what brings you here?" Elara asked, trying to ignore the pounding of her heart. "I was once a part of the Shadowfallen, but I grew disillusioned with our ways," Kael explained. "I saw the pain and suffering we caused, and I couldn't bear it anymore." "So you want to end the conflict?" Elara asked, feeling a spark of hope within her. "Yes, but not by force. We must find a way to unite them through understanding and empathy," Kael replied. As they stood there in the darkness, Elara felt a newfound determination within herself. Together, they would bring peace to Gloomwood. In Gloomwood, Elara discovered her abilities and was destined to unite with Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen. Together, they confront the war between Lightbringers and Shadowfallen factions using their powers to promote unity. Their combined might brings hope and changes the fate of Gloomwood, as they discover that the two factions were once united but grew apart due to fear and suspicion. Elara and Kael met in the heart of Gloomwood, where the two factions clashed violently. The tension was palpable as Elara's light shimmered through the darkness, while Kael's shadow danced around them. "Do you really think we can bring peace to this place?" Kael asked, his voice tinged with skepticism. "I believe it's possible," Elara replied, her eyes filled with determination. "We must find a way to bring the factions together and remind them of what they once were – united." As they began their journey, Elara and Kael encountered those who were both for and against their cause. They faced challenges that tested their resolve, but through it all, their friendship grew stronger. Together, they brought hope to Gloomwood, and as the factions began to reunite, they discovered the truth about their shared history – once upon a time, they had been one people united by love and peace. In the heart of Gloomwood, Elara and Kael stood face-to-face, the weight of their mission pressing heavily upon them. The air was thick with tension as they knew that the fate of both Lightbringers and Shadowfallen factions rested on their shoulders. "We must find a way to unite these two warring factions," Elara whispered softly, her voice carrying the weight of her convictions. "Their fear and suspicion have driven them apart, but we can remind them of the love they once shared." Kael nodded solemnly, his eyes filled with determination. "We must show them that there is strength in unity, that together we can overcome any obstacle. Let us start by finding common ground between our factions and build from there." As they began their journey through the town, Elara and Kael could feel the eyes of the citizens upon them, some filled with hope, while others were filled with suspicion. Undeterred, they continued to spread their message of unity and love, hoping to change the hearts and minds of those around them. In a small tavern, they found themselves surrounded by Lightbringers and Shadowfallen alike. As they spoke, their words carried through the crowd, planting seeds of hope in the hearts of the listeners. One by one, people began to realize that their differences were not insurmountable, and that together they could rebuild Gloomwood into a place of peace and harmony. In time, the factions began to work together, putting aside their fears and suspicions. As Elara and Kael continued their journey, they watched as the people of Gloomwood came together, their united strength growing stronger every day. And in that moment, Elara knew that she had found her purpose - to bring hope and unity to a world torn apart by fear. In the heart of Gloomwood, Elara and Kael stood face-to-face, their eyes locked in understanding. The tension between Lightbringers and Shadowfallen had been palpable for years, but now it was time for change. "You know, we used to be one people," Elara whispered, her voice echoing through the cobblestone streets. Kael nodded, his shadowy features softening as he agreed. "Yes, long ago, our ancestors were united by love and a shared destiny. But fear and suspicion tore us apart." Elara sighed, looking around at the once-familiar town now divided by invisible barriers. "We must remind them of who they were before, of their love for one another," she declared, her voice firm. "But how?" Kael asked, his eyes searching the horizon as if he could see a solution in the distance. Elara placed a hand on his arm, her touch a comforting presence. "We start with small acts of kindness and understanding. We show them that there is more to fear than what divides us." Together, they began their journey through Gloomwood, their footsteps echoing in the quiet streets. As they moved from one faction to another, whispers spread like wildfire. People began to notice the strange pair, and curiosity soon turned into hope. "What are you doing?" a voice called out, drawing Elara and Kael's attention. They saw a group of Lightbringers watching them cautiously from a nearby alley. Elara stepped forward with a warm smile. "We're trying to bring peace back to Gloomwood," she replied, her eyes filled with sincerity. Kael added, "We believe in unity, and we hope you will join us." The group hesitated, their eyes darting between the two strangers. Slowly, one by one, they began to nod, their expressions changing from skepticism to determination. And so, the journey to reunite Gloomwood had begun. In Gloomwood's heart, Elara and Kael stood atop a hill overlooking the town, the sun setting behind them. The sky turned shades of orange and pink as the last rays of sunlight retreated below the horizon. The air was cool, and a gentle breeze rustled through the leaves of nearby trees. Elara glanced at Kael, her eyes searching for something she couldn't quite name. He looked back, his expression unreadable. "What do you see when you look out here?" Elara asked softly. Kael smiled, a sad but knowing smile. "I see the potential for change. The possibility of unity." "But how can we bring the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen together?" Elara asked, her voice filled with hope. "We must remind them of their shared history," Kael replied. "Once upon a time, they lived in harmony, protected by the same moon that now casts its silver light on us." Elara nodded, understanding dawning in her eyes. "We will journey together, then. To rediscover this forgotten past and to show both factions that their fear and suspicion are unfounded." Kael took her hand, squeezing it tightly. "Together, we shall change the fate of Gloomwood." And with that, they set out on a journey that would test their strength, their resolve, and their love for one another. As they overcame challenges and faced obstacles, their bond only grew stronger. The once-divided factions began to see the truth: their unity was not a threat but a reminder of the love and peace they once shared. And so, under the watchful gaze of the moon that had once united them all, Elara and Kael stood hand in hand, finally reuniting the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen factions and ushering in a new era of hope for Gloomwood. In Gloomwood, Elara found herself in a world shrouded in darkness and filled with mystery. As she explored the land, she began to uncover hidden abilities within her. It wasn't long before she encountered Kael, a disillusioned Shadowfallen who had grown weary of the endless war between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen factions. The two of them quickly realized that they were destined to be united, and together, they vowed to bring peace to Gloomwood. Elara's eyes glowed with a newfound power as she stood before Kael in the heart of Gloomwood. "We need to find a way to remind them of their shared history," Elara said, her voice filled with determination. Kael nodded, his shadowy form casting a dark silhouette against the dimly lit forest. "I know where we can start. There's an ancient library hidden in the depths of these woods. It holds stories of Gloomwood's past, long before the factions separated." With their combined powers, Elara and Kael fought through the challenges that stood in their way, growing stronger with each passing day. As they delved deeper into the forest, they discovered the ancient library, its walls adorned with tales of unity and love between the Lightbringers and the Shadowfallen. "You see," Kael whispered as he traced his finger along the weathered pages, "once upon a time, our people lived in harmony, sharing their gifts and talents to create a thriving world." Elara listened intently, her heart swelling with hope. She knew that together, they could bring peace back to Gloomwood and reunite the factions under a banner of unity. And so, they embarked on their quest, determined to change the fate of Gloomwood, one story at a time. In Gloomwood's heart, Elara and Kael stood face to face for the first time, their eyes meeting in recognition of their destined union. "We must find a way to bring peace between our factions," Elara whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. Kael nodded solemnly, "I agree. It's time we put an end to this senseless war." As they began their journey together, the pair faced countless challenges that tested their resolve and deepened their bond. In one village, they encountered a group of Lightbringers and Shadowfallen refugees huddled together in fear. "Do not let fear divide us," Elara said firmly, her voice carrying across the crowd. "We must remember our shared history, our love for one another." Kael took her hand and added, "Together, we can overcome any obstacle." As their message spread, more people began to join them in their quest for unity. Ultimately, Elara and Kael discovered the truth about Gloomwood's past: once upon a time, the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen had been united, sharing love and peace. But fear and suspicion had driven them apart, resulting in the war that now plagued their land. Determined to change the fate of Gloomwood, Elara and Kael led the factions back to their roots, reminding them of the love they once shared and inspiring them to reunite. In the end, the war ended, and hope returned to Gloomwood. The Lightbringers and Shadowfallen lived side by side in peace, grateful for the courageous pair who had dared to dream of a better future and had shown them all the power of unity. In Gloomwood, Elara walked through the dimly lit streets, her senses heightening as she explored the eerie town. She could feel the tension in the air, the weight of centuries-old secrets pressing down on her. As she wandered deeper into Gloomwood, she stumbled upon a mysterious stranger, Kael, who seemed to share her unease with the place. Kael: "You look lost, stranger. Are you here for a reason?" Elara: "I... I don't know. I just felt drawn to this town." Kael: "That's what they all say. But be careful, not everyone in Gloomwood is who they seem." As the days went by, Elara and Kael found themselves drawn together. They began to uncover their hidden powers and, with them, a shared destiny. The two of them realized that they were destined to bring unity between the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen factions, who had been at war for as long as anyone could remember. "We have to find a way to make them see reason," Elara said, her eyes filled with determination. "To remind them of what they once were." Kael: "I agree, but it won't be easy. We must tread carefully and use our powers wisely." Together, they embarked on a journey to heal the rift between the warring factions. Along the way, they faced countless challenges and overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. Their bond grew stronger as they realized that their connection was more than fate – it was destiny. As Elara and Kael united the Lightbringers and Shadowfallen, they brought peace to Gloomwood and revealed the truth about the two factions: once upon a time, they had been one people, united by love and shared history. In restoring their connection, Elara and Kael not only changed the fate of Gloomwood but also reminded everyone of the power of unity and the importance of understanding and compassion.
D&D Story: *excited internal panic* (Or: The Fourth Time the Lightbringers Met a God)
Hello, I have another Rise of the Shadowmaster story, and y'all are not going to believe what happened in today's session.
First, though, a follow-up from my last post:
We successfully defended my character's at-home family from the attack, and while a couple of Dea's siblings did very briefly go unconscious or die, we were able to revive them and everyone's ok now. You know, aside from the trauma.
Our sorcerer beat a young blue dragon in a one-on-one fight (well, one-on-one on our sorcerer's side; the dragon brought in orc reinforcements at one point because he was scared).
We learned that one of Dea's sisters had vanished the same night as her father died. Dea, another of her sisters, and our cleric went to find her . . . and discovered that she'd killed their father because he was . . . not a great dad, in that he was pushing them into adventuring careers and how much he showed love tended to be dependent on how much the child in question was doing what he wanted them to do.
Dea and the non-murderous sister realized that murder sister, while wrong in her actions, had a point and made a plan for how they could bring their dad back while also giving him no choice but to change (or else lose the rest of their family).
The party went to hell and killed Ralak-Shas a second time. He hadn't fully regenerated; pretty much all he could do was monologue. I gave him/the DM a few minutes and then stabbed him with my Holy Avenger.
(Because yes, I have a Holy Avenger. It's cursed, though, and gives me disadvantage on INT rolls. Or, rather, it was cursed . . .)
Ok. So that brings us to tonight. We knew we needed to un-curse my sword. We'd gathered some of the items we thought we'd need in order to lift the curse, and we'd learned about a particular location in the Feywild where we'd be able to find help with lifting it — a place made holy by the followers of some deity. So, we enlisted the aid of a hag shopkeeper friend and set off for the Feywild!
The trip to the Feywild and to the location, Laerius Faul, was surprisingly uneventful. Our rogue did decide to gamble with a satyr, but the satyr was surprisingly easily satisfied. And we did run into some displacer beasts (!!!!! my favorite D&D monster!!!!) and meenlocks, but we dispatched those pretty quickly.
At this point, our hag friend split off from our group, saying she wanted to see if she could find some old friends of hers who might have helped our rogue at one point. She was acting a little strangely, but we were all focused on our objective, so after she refused our offers of company, we parted ways and set off for our individual objectives.
We found Laerius Faul without any more trouble, and my Divine Sense showed that it was indeed a hallowed place. We were welcomed in, and one of the people said he'd set up the necessary meeting and would we wait in the courtyard while he did that?
("Do you know why we're here?" we asked him. "How do you know who we need to meet with?" Oh, if we'd only known!)
So, we waited. And then the door to the building at the other side of the courtyard opens and what looks like an ordinary human woman steps out . . . except, our group's been around deities, and Dea has divine sense anyway, and we can figure out quickly that this is a goddess, not a mortal (not a mortal anymore).
But she was mortal, once. A mortal from the same land as Dea. And on this plane, there can be no doubt as to who she is.
Dea falls to her knees in the presence of Lyf, Goddess of Renewal, the lady she's served all this time but never truly expected to meet.
Lyf tells those kneeling to rise. She knows why we're here. Dea's prayed about it multiple times. But she can also see that Dea is freaked out, and counseling and insight (and therapy) fall under the umbrella of renewal, so she invites us to come in for tea and a chat.
(Dea cannot quite believe that a goddess is serving her tea. But tea is familiar and a ritual from the temple where she trained, so it helps.)
They talk about the recent events. About the choices Dea had to make about her family and the way in which she made them, about Dea's hopes that her father can change and be renewed along with the rest of their family. About the calamities that have befallen the world, what they mean and how Dea feels about them and sees in them.
(Lyf also dropped a bombshell about our sorcerer's dragon deity, about how she and her siblings had been the ones to cause the Relentless to relent and side with humans and humanoids instead of other dragons. That's beside the point, but it will make for some interesting RP in later sessions.)
And then comes time for what we came here for — time to lift the curse on Dea's Holy Avenger. Dea got the weapon from the horde of an ancient aberrant dragon, one of the ancient dragons whom the gods fought before their ascension, who had merged with an aberrant being from the Far Realms. Exposure to the evil and chaotic magics of the aberrant dragon had corrupted the blade, and though it still blazed as hotly against evil as ever, it had a way of clouding the wielder's thoughts.
Lyf took the party back out to a holy pond behind her home and commanded Dea to lower the sword into the water. Then she asked two questions: What will you do with this sword? And why are you on this quest?
And Dea, after a moment, answered her, her words clumsy but her conviction sure. What would she do with the sword? She would end the war and the calamity. She would help our sorcerer make the dragon alliance into what it was meant to be — dragons and humanoids working and living together, not as enemies but as friends. She would try to help the drow change their society, too, change it so perhaps they would no longer be at odds with the surface and so people like the one drow girl she befriended could follow the paths they wished to follow. She would protect, and she would fight evil while seeking to preserve the good that came out of that evil.
And why her? Why not someone else? (Why not one of her siblings?)
Because the Lightbringers didn't need another warrior. They didn't need another adventurer or leader or ruler, not another schemer, not a dealer of vengeance. The world hadn't needed those things. They needed someone who fought to protect, who fought for her family. Who fought to make things better than they were. And they needed someone who had been in a not-great family situation, who saw the problems in that situation (even if she didn't want to acknowledge them as much as she should've, even if she didn't do as much as she should've) and who could sympathize with others in such situations. They needed a protector and a counselor. And so here one was.
With those answers, Lyf was pleased. The curse lifted, and the sword was remade, renamed, so it bore Lyf's symbol and Lyf's blessing and Dea's purpose.
And Dea looked at her goddess and knelt as a knight kneels before her beloved liege. She said then simply, "Thank you. I won't forget."
(She won't.)
~~~
We have one last thing to do in the Feywild before we leave, a mission given by Lyf but also kind of brought on us by ourselves. Remember our hag friend? Turns out she used to be much more powerful, much more deadly, before she left the Feywild and lost half her memories in the process. She's regaining those memories, remembering her power. If she returns to the material plane with all that intact, we'll have a supervillain as bad or worse than the Shadowmaster on the loose.
We're not going to let that happen. If we're lucky and successful, we'll mess with her return just enough that her memories stay in the Feywild where she left them the first time. If not?
Well, dealing with world-threatening magical threats is what we do. And we'll do it again, even if we'll mourn that we have to do it.
But that's a problem for next session . . .
~~~
(My remade sword is so cool, by the way. Obviously it's a storming Holy Avenger, which is awesome in and of itself, but having a literal deity break the curse means it got an upgrade, so now I have advantage on Insight checks and, most exciting, I get to heal any time I use a Divine smite — however much radiant damage I deal, I heal someone in my aura for that much. It's the coolest, and I'm super hyped.)
I've sort of said this before but how the Light treats blessings is just. So fucken funny.
Tirion gets excommunicated but still gets the divine interventions in his favor every other weekend. Even when he's dead he's still getting blessed. Why? Who fucken knows.
Whitemane gets manually rezzed by the Light every time she dies as its favorite war criminal until she's stabbed with holy weapons and then the Light wants nothing to do with her and lets her be raised as a DK.
Darion received a holy vision from the Light to go see Tirion so he could impart the wisdom of "kill yourself" on behalf of the Light.
The Light refused to help Alexandros, its strongest paladin in the Third War, until Darion killed himself for some reason.
The Light turns Calia undead for.... ????? I read Before the Storm through at least six times and I don't remember if they ever gave a reason.
The Light just LET a dreadlord lead a holy order without striking it down. Do you know how many people died because of that choice?
Anduin survived the bell incident thanks to the Light but now it zaps him every time he has a negative thought.
The Light does not even bother annihilating Arthas when he's fighting Uther despite the fact that Uther is literally the Lightbringer and it would've been so fucken easy to do so. It just lets Uther lose. The Lightbringer. The first paladin.
Just in case you forgot the Light saved Tirion from drowning in fel so he could just die slowly later for no reason.
Turalyon lives in a paradox where his wife is an evil heretic to the Light and wants her dead but if she was dead Turalyon would've been killed ages ago because the Light does not bother to actually save him from shit. But also Turalyon can't die of old age because the Light won't let him.
The Light works in mysterious ways I guess.
