ok, this might be a me thing, but I'm learning french and getting my exposure to the language via reading the bible and doing the traditional prayers and listening/singing the worship songs and chants that I already know, and the act of HAVING to think about each and every word has actually been such an experience. like you get so used to the words in the our father and the bible verses that you have read thousands of times and sometimes it just goes past you. you read it and it goes past you. but in french i HAVE to stop and think about every word and it made me more aware of them

another reason i think that xie lian felt an instant connection on the ox cart is because he and hua cheng both grew up in xianle.

there are maybe 4 people still alive that grew up in that culture. based on my own experience, you can pick up on things like accent, cadence, references, and humor that suggest a person is from the same place as you without consciously noticing it. that sense of comfort and similarity probably played into their instant chemistry.

i genuinely can’t stop thinking about this scene. fxmq still standing near xie lian even though they could have stepped away from him even before everyone was dismissed. and once they were told to leave they didn’t go immediately, they hesitated. and then mu qing leaves first, followed by feng xin, both of them looking disappointed to go but what other choice do they have and all three together again but they can’t fix the past and this is no doubt a harsh reminder of everything that had happened. god.
