Aye Chronivac? I’m glad I found you. See, I have a bit of a soft spot for rugby, despite being a scrawny nerd, so I was at a game for my local team. It’s not great rugby, they’re kind of just a bunch of chavs getting out some energy haha. Well one of their props got injured today and the coach looked through the spectators and then came up to me saying meet him in the club after the match. I did and saw your guys’ logo on his phone before he played with it for a while, and then said we’re done and to call him in 2 days giving his number. Do you have any idea what happened?
That was really a bit crazy now wasn't it? You leave the clubhouse. And even though you're not really a pub-goer, now you feel like a Coke…. But as you stand between the Chavs, still wearing their sweaty jerseys, you prefer to have a beer like them. You don't know the guys, but you can still drink with them… And after two or three beers you know Michael, Wayne Gaz, Mike, Darren, Tom, Luke, Liam, Adam and Tom as if you were in kindergarten together.
It's pretty late when you stagger out of the pub together…. And it takes you some effort to unlock the lock. Fuck, these guys are really hard drinkers. With effort and difficulty you make it to the bathroom and vomit a whole row of pints into the toilet. Nevertheless, you feel surprisingly well the next morning. So well, in fact, that you go for a run before work. Amazingly, your running shoes are in the hallway and your running clothes are hanging over the chair. You didn't even know you owned such a thing….
At work today, you're not quite on top of things. You surf through the sports pages on the Internet. Reading the news about your team's opponents in the next games. Discussing the last games in internet forums. Chatting with the guys on WhatsApp. At the end of the day you really have a guilty conscience. When your boss asks you when you leave the office what you thought of yesterday's game, you feel caught. But obviously your boss really just wants to talk about rugby. He's never done that before.
After work, you go straight to the pub. A few of the guys are there, too. Someone says that your team played like shit yesterday. Without thinking, you hit them. Nobody insults your team. And the first bar fight of your life begins.
The next morning, after running outside the office, you just jump in the shower. Instead of your usual white shirt, you're wearing a rugby jersey. But that's okay, you're not doing an accountant's apprenticeship anymore. You work in the warehouse. You are certainly not an idiot. But you prefer to work with your body. That's why you're so grateful that Coach wants you on the team.
During the lunch break you call Coach. He says that you are welcome to join the training today, he could imagine you in the team.
Tumblr media
Rugby has always been your sport. You are very proud to be a real team with the others, not just drinking buddies. And tomorrow you will crush the opposing team!

May 28-June 3: School is out for the summer!
School is out for the summer! It's time to relax, have fun, and enjoy the warm weather. Are Stiles and Derek looking forward to swimming, surfing, visiting friends, or just taking some time off? No matter what they do, it’s sure to be a summer to remember.
June 4-10: Coastal Celebration
What better way to celebrate the summer than hitting the beach? Are Stiles and Derek watching the sunset in Santorini, Greece? Swimming in the clear waters of Hawaii? Maybe they’re taking a pack trip or sailing around the world together for the summer. Take us on their coastal celebration!
June 11-17: Staycation
It’s summertime in Beacon Hills! From the bowling alley to the indoor ice rink, there are a lot of fun places to hang out and explore. Will Stiles and Derek dance the night away at one of the local clubs? Or maybe they spend their time walking through the preserve, taking in all nature has to give. Who knows! It’s up to you to decide how Stiles and Derek spend their staycation.
June 18-24: Camping Anywhere
Stiles and Derek are going on a camping trip! Are they going to a National Park? Hiding out in the preserve in a den? Sleeping in the Jeep because the rain flooded them out of their undisclosed campsite? Maybe they’re taking a pack trip during the full moon to run under the moonlight together, hunting deer while Stiles and Derek renew their mating bond. Only you can tell us where their camping adventure will take us!
June 25-July 1: Tented Elegance
It’s that time of the year when fabulous parties happen in large, elegant tents! Maybe Stiles and Derek are having a summer wedding on their property at the rebuilt Hale house, renewing their vows; or they’re having a pack get-together escaping the heat in style. Wherever they decide to spend their time, it’s under a large, elegant tent! Take us on their adventure this summer!
July 2-8: Luxe Lakeside
It’s time to hit the lake! Lydia Martin is known to throw the best parties at her lakehouse! But this one is going to last all summer. Is it pack party time? Or are Derek and Stiles alone at the lakehouse after everyone left the party? Maybe Stiles borrowed the key from Lydia and there is no party, so the mated couple is getting away and spending time alone. Or they’re taking a trip out of town to visit a lakehouse in a beautiful secluded place that is owned by Derek’s family. Only your imagination can tell us!
July 9-15: Road Trip to Anywhere
Pack your bags for a road trip to anywhere! Stiles and Derek are getting the heck out of Beacon Hills this summer. Pick a destination, whether by Camaro or Jeep and show us their journey! Are they going to a state or national park? Visiting the hot springs in Yellowstone? Hitting all the cheesy roadside attractions with no destination in mind? Only you can show us!
July 16-22: Backpacking Europe
Grab your backpack and your passports! Stiles and Derek are trekking across Europe this summer! Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Greece… there are so many beautiful places the boys can visit this summer! Take us on your fantasy trip, or give us some insight if you live or have visited European destinations!
July 23-29: Island Getaway
Stiles and Derek are heading to an island getaway! It sounds like a great time to visit Cancun for the first time. Jamaica, The Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Cuba, Honduras, the British Virgin Islands, Bora Bora, Fiji, Greece, Italy… There are so many places to visit, laying on a beach, catching some sun! What are Derek and Stiles doing on their island getaway? Are they on their honeymoon? Taking a pack trip? Take us away to their island getaway!
July 30-August 5: Back to School
Summer is over and it’s time to head back to school! Are Stiles and Derek the same age and in high school together? Are they attending the same university? Maybe they’re pledging the same fraternity or they’re freshman roommates away for the first time at school. Maybe they met at summer camp and have to leave since summer is over and find out they don't live that far from each other. After all, it’s a small world! Take us back to school with Stiles and Derek!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The salty breeze swept across the coastline, carrying whispers of the sea as Liam Lawson and his girlfriend, you, walked hand in hand, your child, your son, skipping joyfully beside you.
The sky above was painted with hues of orange and pink as the sun dipped toward the horizon, casting a warm glow over the sand and surf. It looked absolutely mesmerizing.
As you strolled along the shore, the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the rocks filled the air, a soothing melody that seemed to echo the passage of time.
Liam and you exchanged loved full glances, your eyes reflecting a shared history, a journey filled with both triumphs and trials. It was a rollercoaster full of emotions, but if it would always end like this, you would always do it again.
Your child, a bundle of energy and curiosity, darted ahead, eager to explore every nook and cranny of the coastline. Liam smiled fondly, his heart swelling with love for the little one who had brought so much joy into your lives.
"Can you believe how fast he's growing?" You said happily, breaking the silence that had settled between them. You looked back at your child, smiling brightly. He and Liam were the best things that had ever happened to you.
Liam nodded, his gaze following your child's every move. "It feels like just yesterday he was taking his first steps, and now look at him, running around like he owns the world."
You walked in comfortable silence for a while, lost in your own thoughts as memories of the past mingled with hopes for the future. The gentle lull of the waves seemed to carry your worries away, leaving only a sense of peace and contentment in its wake.
"Do you ever think about how far we've come?" Liam asked, his voice soft with emotion. Every time he looked at you, his smile grew brighter and his eyes showed brighter.
His girlfriend, you, nodded, a wistful smile tugging at your lips. "All the time. Remember when we first met? It feels like a lifetime ago. The happiest lifetime, if I say so myself"
Liam chuckled, his mind drifting back to those early days of your relationship, filled with laughter and late-night conversations. "Yeah, and look at us now, walking along the coastline with our little one. Who would've thought we'd end up here?"
You paused to watch your child as he chased after seagulls, his laughter floating on the breeze like a melody. Liam reached out to squeeze your warm hand, his heart overflowing with gratitude for the life you had built together.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," Liam said, his voice filled with conviction.
You happily smiled, your eyes sparkling with love. "Me neither." And it was true, you loved this life with Liam and your son. Every thing was perfect and could be any better.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the sky ablaze with vibrant colors, Liam and you continued your stroll along the coastline, your footsteps leaving imprints in the sand, a testament to the journey you both had undertaken together.
And as they walked, hand in hand, with their child by their side, they knew that no matter what the future held, they would face it together, bound by love and the echoes of a life well-lived.

“I don’t have to point out the irony, do I?” Hoseok shouts to be heard over the wind. “The fact that you’re terrified of open water, but run an organization dedicated to saving the ocean?”
“Nope,” you say, gripping the rope like a lifeline. “No need to point out the obvious.”
Hoseok grins. “Anytime,” he laughs, stepping onto the yacht.
Determinedly, you stare at the gangplank before you. You can do this, you reason. People walk onto boats every day and walk off them, alive. There’s no reason you would be the one to trip, fall into the ocean and be devoured by a shark. Or worse.
Shit. Now you’re thinking about what worse would be.
When Olya suggested this meeting, you agreed without really listening to the particulars. The particulars were important though, since they involved meeting Doug Johnson – reticent mayor of Marine Cove himself – onboard a yacht owned by one of Seokjin’s friends. A meeting during which you’ll be setting sail for several hours.
On the open ocean. Alone.
Most likely, you’ll die.
At least today will be a distraction, you think, gingerly placing a foot on the gangplank. After the events of the past week, you’ve done everything short of flinging yourself into the sun to distance your thoughts from Jungkook.
Forcing your concentration, you run the last several steps to enter the ship. Catching your breath, you turn and find Hoseok looking bemused.
Casual, he pushes his glasses up his nose. “Come on.” Hoseok turns. “Liam should be here any minute.”
Ah, yes – the other nerve-wracking part of today.
Marine Cove still hasn’t given a response about whether they’ll participate in your coastal ecosystem project. In a final effort, Hoseok suggested bringing Liam along. Marine Cove’s biggest worry is their main employer abandoning the town in retaliation. Hopefully, introducing Doug to Liam will remind Marine Cove there are other companies willing to work with Clean Ocean.
A promising idea, but one wreaking havoc on your sanity – what’s left of it, anyways. After your parents’ party on Saturday, you’re hanging on by a thread. First you introduced Liam to your parents way too soon and received their unfortunate approval, and then…
Well. And then.
Shutting out thoughts of Jungkook, you return to the problem at hand. Forcibly confronting your fear of open water might be the only thing planet capable of tearing your thoughts away from Jungkook.
At least only Hoseok saw your embarrassing entrance. He insisted on arriving a half-hour early to set up, resulting in no one seeing your struggle. By the time Olya and Liam get here, hopefully your motion sickness pills will have kicked in.
Beneath your feet, the boat gently rocks while you wait on the deck. Checking your phone, you see zero messages. Ignoring the way your heart pinches, you replace your phone as a man enters the stern.
“You must be Y/N and Hoseok,” he says with a grin.
Stepping forward, the sun’s rays light him as though they belong there. Blonde hair, tan skin, and an easy smile – the man could be an advertisement for surfing but for a steadiness which makes you trust him implicitly. Safely, you assume he must be the captain.
“Yes,” you say, shaking his outstretched hand. “And you must be… Noah?”
“At your service.” Finished with greetings, Noah steps back to lace both hands before him. “Would you like a tour of the vessel before heading upstairs? That’s where the table has been set up for your meeting.”
“Sure.” Hoseok cuts off your noise of protest. “That’d be great.”
Nodding, Noah turns and disappears down the hall.
You tug on Hoseok’s sleeve. “Didn’t you want to prepare for the meeting?” you hiss.
“This is preparing. Or don’t you want to know where the exits are?”
Hoseok has a point, so you nod and follow suit. The boat – yacht? Ship? –is beautiful, you have to admit. It belongs to one of Seokjin’s family friends and whatever he did to allow your use, you don’t want to know.
The interior is clean and white with bright wooden beams overhead. Having entered from the stern, you follow Noah through the interior to reach the bow. He points out several rooms as you pass – staff quarters, an equipment room, a game space and more.
You nod, slightly dazed when you come to a stop at a narrow staircase. At the top, the view frankly takes away your breath. Hoseok lets out a low whistle, climbing behind you.
“Damn,” he says, stopping to take in the view.
Ahead is the bow, waterproof cushions laid out for sunning. A steel ladder descends to the deck – one you won’t be using, you decide. The marina stretches beyond it, and past that lies the ocean in waves of pure blue. It hurts your eyes and, squinting at the brightness, you turn away.
Immediately you spot the table Noah mentioned – a small, four-person space set with paper, pens and assorted drinks and snacks.
Noticing your glance, Noah asks, “Will it be just you two today?”
“We’re expecting three more,” says Hoseok. “So, we need another chair.”
Taking this all in stride, Noah nods. “I’ll go and grab one. You two make yourselves at home.”
Once he’s gone, you look at Hoseok. “Three?”
“Mhm.” He nods. “I asked Olya to come.”
Pointedly not meeting your gaze, Hoseok pulls out a chair to sit at the table. Hiding a smile, you leisurely join.
“So,” you say, nonchalant. “Olya’s coming.”
“So. You’re scared of fish.”
Your smile vanishes. “I’m not scared of fish, Hobi. I want fish to live in a clean and safe environment. I just don’t think people give the ocean the respect it deserves!”
Lips twitching, Hoseok shakes his head. “It is pretty spectacular, I’ll admit,” he says, gazing around the deck.
“I know,” you agree. “When we’re docked, I appreciate it even more. I just wish we’d stay in the harbor today.”
“We are.” Hoseok closes his eyes. “I was fucking with you when I said we’d be at open sea.”
You gape for a moment before smacking him – hard – on one arm. Hoseok laughs and jerks upright, swatting right back. Before you can fully berate him, someone calls from below.
“Hello?” Liam’s voice drifts from the staircase. “Anyone here?”
“We’re up here,” you call back. “Hoseok and I are upstairs!”
Liam’s hair appears first, windswept and golden. His eyes crinkle as they emerge, revealing a smile when he clears the last steps. On the landing he pauses to take in your surroundings.
“Wow.” Liam whistles. “What does your friend do again?”
“It’s not his boat,” you say, rising from your chair. “But it is beautiful.”
Turning from the ocean, Liam’s gaze darkens when he sees you. “It’s not the only thing,” he agrees, dropping his voice so Hoseok won’t hear.
His words prompt butterflies in your stomach, the unmistakable pleasure of being complimented and – that’s it. Nothing beyond that. No sweaty palms, throbbing heart, or sudden speechlessness. Before you can adequately mask your disappointment, Hoseok jumps in.
“Should we go over the plan?” he asks. “Before Doug arrives.”
Retreating from you, Liam nods and gestures for you to sit first.
“Sure thing,” he says, and you rejoin the table.
Since Saturday, you’ve been in contact with Liam nearly every day. Nothing crazy, just a hey, how are you here and a goodnight text there. Your exchanges have been pleasant, if not exciting.
Which is a good thing, you remind yourself.
Liam is the exact opposite of crying alone in a hotel bathroom until you can breathe easily enough to pretend nothing happened.
Holding onto this, you glance upward and catch Hoseok watching. His brows furrow, and he stares a moment longer than necessary before Captain Noah returns.
“Ah, another one,” he says, setting down the fifth chair. Good-naturedly, Noah sticks out his hand for Liam to shake. “Apologies for not greeting you at the dock. Wanted to make sure everything was set up here.”
Half-rising, Liam offers a smile. “No problem at all,” he says, shaking hands. “Beautiful boat you have here.”
“Not mine.” Laughing a little, Noah withdraws. “But beautiful, all the same. I’ll head downstairs to greet the rest of your guests. Let me know if you need anything!”
“Thanks, Noah!” you call as he leaves.
Silence falls when he leaves, save for the wind off the ocean. A quick glance at Hoseok shows him texting someone, probably Olya.
“So.” Liam leans in. “Strategy?”
“Right,” you exhale.
Earlier, you printed out copies of Hoseok’s talking points. Accepting the paper you hand him, Liam quickly scans the page as Hoseok’s phone dings.
“That’s Olya,” he says, jumping up. “I’ll go get her.”
You have no time to protest before Hoseok disappears. Taking advantage of his absence, Liam leans forward until his knee presses to yours.
“So,” he says, his voice low. “I enjoyed meeting your family on Saturday.”
“Did you?” You blink, unable to mask your surprise. “That has to be my first time hearing that.”
“Granted” – Liam laughs – “those types of parties aren’t my thing, but it was nice to be introduced to people as your boyfriend.”
“Ah.” You hesitate. “You… really don’t need to worry about that. Jason tends to get carried away.”
“I didn’t mind,” Liam says, not hearing the subtext. “I liked when he said it.”
“Oh. Sure.”
Sinking a little, you ponder how best to fix this when Olya and Hoseok return. Pasting a smile over your face, you make room for Olya as Liam asks Hoseok a question.
While they’re talking, you can’t help but look at Liam.
It was strange, how Liam acted on Saturday – or rather, how he didn’t act. Since meeting, Liam has said he doesn’t belong in your parents’ world but from what you saw, Liam fits in better than you. Take now, for instance. His crisp, linen trousers and white shirt are ready-made for a yacht. You’re ninety percent sure you’ve seen your father wear the same get-up.
You’re so entrenched in these thoughts, you nearly miss the moment Doug arrives. Hoseok notices though, the legs of his chair scraping as he stands.
“Mr. Johnson,” he says brightly. “Please, have a seat.”
Scanning the table, Doug nods and places his briefcase on the floor. “Hello, everyone,” he says, seating himself beside you. “I know Hoseok and Y/N, but I don’t believe I’ve had the pleasure of meeting everyone else.”
“Liam Jessen.” Liam extends his hand. “CEO of Infinity Motors.”
Doug glances briefly at this, then back up. “I see.” His gaze cuts to Olya. “And you are?”
“Olya Cermak,” she supplies. “Head of Communication and Events for Clean Ocean.”
Doug nods, recognizing the name. “Pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise.”
“Now that we’re all acquainted,” you say, jumping in. “Shall we get started?”
“Yes, let’s.” Doug nods. “I suppose I can tell you the city council has yet to come to a decision regarding our participation. It might be best if we withdraw until after the pilot.”
His words cause your heart to sink, though you try not to show it.
“That would be a shame.” Hoseok pushes up his glasses. “We invited Mr. Jessen so that you could talk. I know you’re concerned about how temporary closures might affect small businesses. As a business owner himself, Liam might be able to better explain the benefits of our programs.”
“That’s right,” Liam says confidently. “Infinity Motors has always–”
“You’re a big business, though.” Turning away, Doug cuts Liam off. “I fail to see how your experiences are relevant to brick-and-mortar stores with seasonal customers. Just one month’s loss of income could be enough to drive them out of business.”
Liam falters, glancing at you with a panicked expression. Doug has a point though and, as you realize this, even Hoseok falls silent. Your last-ditch effort might be dead in the water.
Except.
Doug’s speech would be more convincing if he hadn’t told you his greatest fear was that clothing corporation. Painting himself as the savior of small business is laying it on a bit thick. The moment you think this, Jungkook comes to mind, and you hear your conversation play back in your mind.
Are you talking about blackmail?
No. I’m talking about explaining their options.
Teeth gritted, you have a momentary debate before deciding to hell with it. Smoothing your expression, you lean back in your seat.
“Doug,” you respond, folding your hands together. “Let’s all be honest, okay? You’re having second thoughts about participating in Clean Ocean’s program because of threats from a certain clothing company – right?”
Doug is silent long enough to confirm your suspicions.
You nod, as though in agreement. “I suppose I can’t fault you for that. You’re only looking out for your town and that company is a major employer.”
“That’s… true,” he says slowly.
Brow furrowed, Doug continues to look at you skeptically. Clearly, he doesn’t trust you and for good reason. Hoseok gives you a similar look and silently, you will him to hold on.
“Ultimately, Clean Ocean can find another town to pilot with.” You shrug. “Hell, we already have two other cities lined up. There’s unfortunately no shortage of polluted cities. The main reason we thought of you was because of said clothing company.”
Although Doug remains silent, he appears to be listening.
Reaching out, you take another sip of your water. “I know it can be hard to divorce the short-term from long-term. Right now, this company is threatening to leave. In the long term though, your tourist numbers continue to dwindle. Those businesses you claim to care about won’t have sustainable profits to live off much longer. I can only imagine what they’ll think once they hear their city council passed on a coastal renovation project.”
Hearing this, Doug’s eyes widen.
“Is… that a threat?” he says, stunned.
“Of course not,” you say, keeping your expression neutral. “Merely an observation.”
“So, what then,” Doug blusters. “You’ll go over my head? Leak the news that we turned you down to the press?”
Hoseok makes a tsk-ing noise in the back of his throat.
“A news leak. No, no – nothing like that.” Doug’s momentary look of relief disappears when Hoseok continues, “It would be understandable though, if a lower-level employee accidentally published a release with our Head of Communications out of office. The one which lists Marine Cove as a program participant.”
Olya nods. “Terrible, but understandable. How can employees learn without making mistakes? Of course, it’d be embarrassing if Marine Cove needed to correct our materials. Explain how they turned down our offer.”
Looking slightly green, Doug glances between you. “The council won’t like this,” he warns.
He seems queasy enough for you to take pity. You know first-hand how companies like your parents’ operate. Setting down the water, you lean in.
“I meant what I said,” you tell him. “We can find another city to work with. The only reason I’m pressing is because I believe Marine Cove would benefit from this program. If you decide it’s not worth it – fine. All I’m doing is saying you have options if the council refuses to act in your town’s best interest.”
Something akin to hope rekindles in Doug’s gaze.
Relief seeps through you. That was a gamble, but you couldn’t help but notice Doug’s declinations always involve the city council. It sucks to be the messenger, especially when it’s for a cause you don’t believe in. Hopefully, your information helps Doug to push back.
Sensing you’ve outworn your welcome, you push back your chair.
“It might be worth asking,” you continue, “why the possibility of the public knowing the truth is so alarming to the council.”
Doug remains quiet, only looking up when Olya slides an envelope towards him.
“An invitation,” she says, standing as well. “For a pre-launch event this Friday. The launch party is next Saturday, but we’re holding a smaller gathering for investors and participants only. We hope to see you there.”
“Thank you,” Doug says, staring dazedly at the card.
Casting him a sympathetic look, Olya grabs her purse and turns away. Hoseok and Liam start to leave, the latter pausing at the top of the stairwell.
“Y/N, are you coming?” Liam asks.
You nod, although Doug still hasn’t moved. “In a minute,” you say, waving him onward. “You go ahead, and I’ll meet you downstairs.”
Liam departs.
You wait until his footsteps fade, wondering if he were someone else, would you have asked them to stay. As soon as you think this, you shake your head. There’s no point wondering what-ifs when you have a job to do.
“I’m not trying to be an asshole,” you say.
Doug gives a low laugh. “No?” he asks, looking up. “A happy coincidence, then.”
You ignore this. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before; all women in business have heard worse, especially when they need to be firm against men.
“I really do believe it’s for the best,” you continue. “I think you do, as well – despite what you said.”
Doug pauses, then stands and looks out at the ocean. “I know,” he says, shoulders drooping. “That’s what makes this so damned hard.”
Noticing he holds the Clean Ocean invitation, you decide to press on.
“The pre-launch party is more than just a gesture,” you offer. “Clean Ocean has a lot of investors. Infinity Motors is just one of them. If that clothing company does decide to leave…”
You trail off, allowing him to fill in the blanks. A moment passes, then Doug turns his head.
“Who knows?” you say as you move towards the staircase. “Maybe you’ll find another company to replace them.”
Doug doesn’t respond, and you emerge on the lower deck to blink in the sunlight. Hoseok and Liam stand ahead of you, quietly conversing against the railing. Olya is beside them, frantically typing something on her phone. When they hear your approach, all three of them look up.
“Hey.” Breaking away, Liam smiles. “All done?”
“Yep,” you say. “I –”
Doug appears behind you.
“Thank you all for the meeting. Mr. Jessen,” he adds, glancing at Liam. “I’ll be reaching out to you with questions about your Clean Ocean involvement.”
Liam blinks, recovering enough to nod. “I look forward to it.”
Pulling sunglasses from his pocket, Doug slips them on. “You can expect my final response on the subject by the weekend.”
Hoseok lifts a brow. “I’ll keep an eye out.”
Glancing your way, you think Doug almost smiles before striding away. You wait until he’s out of view before you release your breath. Even Hoseok sags slightly before he whirls around.
“That was not in the bullet-points,” he huffs.
“I know, I know,” you groan, slumping on the wall. “But Hobi, he completely shut us down. I had to change directions.”
“I know,” Hoseok says. “And it was a risk, but… damn, it paid off. Good job.” Smiling a little, he pulls out his phone. “I need to head to the office, but you should stick around. Celebrate. Maybe take Seokjin’s boat for a spin around the marina.”
You glare daggers at him and Hoseok smirks, knowing that’s the last thing you’d want. Liam doesn’t seem to notice, looking around in surprise.
“This is the Kim family boat?”
“No,” you correct. “Just someone he knows. And no thanks to the joyride, but I will say goodbye to Noah.”
“No need,” Hoseok says. “Olya said goodbye for all of us.”
Olya nods. “Yeah, he mentioned something about preparing lunch. Hoseok,” she says, turning around. “Can I get a ride to the office? This Friday caterer is giving my assistant the runaround. Don’t worry,” she adds, spotting you. “I’ve got it covered.”
“Yeah, sure,” Hoseok says, fishing for his keys.
Liam glances between you. “Will you be heading into the office as well, Y/N?”
“Oh.” You pause. “I – well, I was planning to.”
“Oh.” His face falls a little. “Right. I was kind of hoping we could grab lunch.”
Guilt flashes through you at his expression. You have a ton of work at the office, but it would be nice to get some fresh air – on land, of course. And you did say you’d give Liam a chance. That means going on things like day dates.
“Okay, sure,” you allow, glancing at Hoseok. “Can you move all my afternoon meetings?”
“Sure, yeah. I’ll text Jason to call you back tomorrow.”
Again, you smack Hoseok, prompting laughter from Olya. “Anyways,” you say loudly, turning to Liam. “Yes, I’m free for lunch.”
“Great.” He smiles. “I’m parked around the corner.”
Nodding, you retrace your steps to exit the gangway. As soon as you’re on solid ground, you exhale in relief. You have gotten better at being on the water. When you were young, your parents could barely bribe you to step foot on a boat. Now, you barely notice – apart from entering, exiting and the actual sailing.
Heading up the hill, you find Liam’s car parked beyond a meter. Hoseok and Olya keep going, waving and leaving the two of you alone.
“So,” you say, squinting at the sun. “Did you have a lunch place in mind?”
“I actually do,” Liam says. “There’s this sushi place I’ve been meaning to try that’s near here. Are you good with that?”
“Sure,” you agree. “Sushi is my favorite.”
“Perfect.” His grin widens. “This way, then.”
Opening the passenger door, Liam waits for you to settle. Once you’re both seated, you’re suddenly aware of how small the space is. Liam is tall – very tall, his head nearly brushing the moonroof above. His cologne fills the car, a rich scent you think Jason used to wear in high school.
“I do have a favor to ask,” says Liam, returning you to the present.
“Oh?” you ask as you buckle your seatbelt. “What’s that?”
When Liam extends his hand, you balk and wonder if he wants you to take it. He opens his palm to reveal an AUX cord.
“Will you DJ?” Liam laughs. “I have shit music taste, according to all my friends.”
A relieved smile breaks over your face.
“Of course,” you say, reaching for the cord. “But I’ve got to say, this is risky. I could have even worse taste than you do. My entire Spotify could be that one song from the Baha Men.”
“Can you move it like this?”
“I can,” you confirm, pressing play. “I can also shake it like that.”
Liam snorts, placing the car into drive. “I’ll take my chances.”
Selecting your LONG DRIVES NEAR THE BEACH playlist, you press play and the opening notes of a pop song fill the car. Liam’s windows are rolled partway down, the sounds of city and surf mixing with the singer’s voice.
The sushi place isn’t far, and you only make it two songs before you arrive. City parking elongates your trip another five, circling the block several times before finding a spot. By the time you reach the restaurant, it’s prime lunch hour.
Despite this, you’re led to a table with a view of the ocean. Taking a seat, you stretch your legs and glance around the place. The restaurant is mostly empty, which is odd – although you suppose it is a weekday. There are office buildings in this area though, usually with hungry lunch patrons.
Taking the seat across the table, Liam stretches his legs to grimace at the fit. You can’t help but laugh as you pick up the menu.
“We could’ve sat at the counter,” you tease him. “Give you more room.”
“No, no,” Liam sighs. “I’ve been this tall since high school. By now, I should be used to it.”
“Since high school – damn.”
“I was much smaller back then, though. Like a stretched-out string bean. I didn’t put on all these muscles until college.”
You peek at him over your menu and his lips twitch, amused.
“Are you looking?” Liam asks without glancing up. “Did it work?”
“It did,” you confirm with a laugh.
Despite the awkwardness on the boat, you’re beginning to enjoy yourself. Talking to Liam is easy, and if you don’t feel the kind of stomach-churning passion you feel in the presence of Jungkook, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
If this were a few months ago, you would’ve been satisfied. Liam’s presence is far better than Eric Main or any of your other dates. And if that were your only comparison, the thought would end there.
He isn’t though, and each time you look at him, you think about Jungkook. Your first date, the last time you spoke, and everything in between. Jungkook making ramen, meeting Dante, and conversing with Jimin. You hear him teasing, supporting and know that no matter how good Liam makes you feel, it’s not the same.
On Saturday, you thought that was what you wanted but now, you’re starting to doubt.
“What can I get you?”
The approach of your waiter drags you from unpleasant thoughts. Forcing a smile, you put down the menu.
“A bento box,” you say, picking the first thing you see. “Chef’s special.”
Nodding, the waiter turns to Liam.
“Make that two. And a glass of Chardonnay. Y/N?”
“Water for me,” you say, handing over your menu. “Thanks.”
Once the waiter disappears, Liam leans in. “I’m sorry I wasn’t able to help more with Doug,” he says, lips twisting. “If he does reach out, I promise to sing your praises.”
“Don’t worry about it,” you say. “It’s not your job to get people to join our programs – it’s ours.”
Liam nods as his white wine is set before him. Picking this up, he takes a deep sniff, tips the glass forward to check for sediment and finally, drinks. Nodding acceptance, Liam dismisses the waiter and sits back in his seat.
Dimly, you feel a shred of annoyance. Jungkook is an actual sommelier and you never once saw him do that.
“You were great though,” says Liam, continuing where you left off. “It was a good idea to leak their withdrawal to the press. Did you come up with the idea with Hoseok?”
His words make you pause, confused. Clearly, Liam wasn’t listening when Hoseok voiced his surprise. Neither did he read the briefing materials – if he had, Liam would’ve known a press leak wasn’t the plan.
“Well – no,” you say, and then stop.
You were about to credit the idea to Jungkook, but Liam doesn’t know how close you were.
Not that it should matter but still, you hesitate. Liam mentioned knowing Jungkook, and not in a good way. Jungkook hinted at similar bad blood between them. It doesn’t seem like a good idea to bring either up to the other.
“It just… came to me,” you say, forcing a smile. Quickly changing the subject, you glance around. “Guess the lunch crowd is a little slow today.”
Frowning your gaze, Liam follows. “Yeah, seems so.”
He doesn’t seem put off, unlike you. Maybe it’s your Type A personality; you hate wasting your time at subpar restaurants. Not that you vet every place before eating, but if you walk into a restaurant and it’s empty at peak hours, that’s typically not a good sign.
“Where did you hear about this place?” you press.
Liam takes another sip of his wine. “A guy from work. He took a distributor to lunch here and raved.” Brow furrowed, he adds, “If he turns out to be wrong, John is officially moved to the last seat at the conference table.”
You laugh, though the sound dies quickly when Liam doesn’t join. Apparently, that was a serious remark.
“Right,” you say. “Uh. You went to the same university as Jason, right?” you add, reaching for a new topic. “How did you like it?”
Liam’s expression relaxes. “Honestly, university was kind of a mixed experience for me. Most of my class grew up together, and I was always the outsider.”
Sympathetic, you nod. The fact that Jungkook, Jason and Liam all attended the same university speaks volumes for the type of institution it is.
“The way Jason tells it though, sounds like you were something of a legend,” you tease, hoping to coax a smile.
On cue, his cheek dimples appear. “I don’t know about that,” Liam laughs. “But I did graduate at the top of my class. Even went back for my MBA.”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah.” His teeth flash. “That’s where I met Jungkook, actually. You remember him, right? From your fundraiser? I’m a few years older than he is, but we attended at the same time.”
Although you nod, you shift uncomfortably. Yes, you remember Jungkook. If memory serves, you went home that night and promptly fell asleep after receiving a mind-blowing virtual orgasm from Jungkook.
Feeling your neck start to heat, you look away.
“Yes,” you manage to say. “I remember him.”
“We were close at university, but after the whole thing at his father’s company” – Liam waves a hand – “we lost touch. I haven’t been back to my university since.”
At this, your eyes narrow.
Call it a sixth sense, but you’ve always had a good instinct for what’s important. If Seokjin knows when you’re lying, you’re able to sift through his nonsense to discover what he really means. Something about Liam’s story isn’t adding up.
Tilting your head, you say, “You… haven’t been back to your university because of the Jeon family?”
Liam pauses, as though realizing he’s said something he shouldn’t. This, of course, only further stokes your interest.
“I – well, partly,” he says. “I know his family are donors, which means they’re close to the professors. After the internship, I wasn’t sure what they’d heard about me.”
“What happened at the internship?”
Again, Liam hesitates, and you lean forward despite yourself. Jungkook said Liam wasn’t a good guy but refused to say why. You’re tired of all the half-truths and lies – if Liam has something to say about Jungkook, you want to know.
“Liam,” you say, your patience slipping a little. “What happened with you and Jungkook?”
“I… don’t know what you mean.”
“I’m not blind. Something clearly happened between you. What was it?”
Liam exhales, then uncrosses his legs. “I just… don’t want to change your perception of him,” he admits, voice dropping. “You seemed friendly at the fundraiser, and I know your parents run in the same circle.”
“Well, we’re clearly not friendly enough for me to know what happened.”
This seems to land, since Liam finally nods.
“It’s stupid,” he admits. “Honestly, I feel embarrassed just telling you. But… like I said, Jungkook and I went to the same university. I was getting my MBA, but we both were part of the business club. It was through him I got my internship with Jeon Energy.”
“Right,” you respond. “I remember you saying it didn’t work out.”
Grimacing, Liam finishes his glass of wine. “Yeah, well… that’s not quite true. I liked Jeon Energy. Jungkook’s dad was a good boss – hands-on, super helpful and he seemed to like my work. I was going to accept their offer at the end of the summer, but …”
“But?”
“… but later, I found out Jungkook was upset by my offer. He got me the internship, but didn’t like how close I got to his dad. At the end of the summer, the company threw this giant party for the interns. I got absolutely wasted, accepting shots from all the managers. When I woke up the next morning, I had a bunch of missed calls. Apparently” – Liam’s face tightens – “my girlfriend was spotted at some club. Making out with Jungkook.”
You feel rooted to the spot. “She … he did what?”
“Hooked up with her,” Liam confirms. “Right in the middle of the dance floor. I got the message loud and clear, and declined the job offer.”
“I….” You falter, unable to think of a response. “I can’t imagine what that was like.”
Liam gives a half-shrug. “It was a long time ago. I try not to judge, because I know Jungkook doesn’t have the best relationship with his dad, but –”
“But he didn’t have to do that,” you interrupt. “There were a million ways he could’ve responded that weren’t hooking up with your girlfriend. Jungkook could've, oh, I don’t know – talked to you.”
Liam’s upper lip twitches. “Yeah, well. He was young.”
“We’re all young,” you say. “If Jungkook and his dad had issues, then that was their problem to work through. Sorry,” you add, catching Liam’s expression. “I just… don’t like cheating.”
“I get it.” He nods. “But it was so long ago, I can’t really be mad. Honestly, I should be thanking Jungkook for how things turned out.”
“Thanking him?”
Nodding, Liam reaches out and takes your hand in his. “If things hadn’t happened the way they did with Jeon Energy, I might have accepted their offer. Then I wouldn’t have joined Infinity Motors, become CEO, and I might never have met you.”
Your stomach twists, gaze dropping to where your hands lace together.
Liam keeps saying all the right things. Most women would kill for what you have; a guy grateful for his struggles because they brought him to you. The only problem is that Liam’s words bring a sense of expectation. Rather than be excited, you have the impression his feelings have strings attached. It leaves an unpleasant tint around the edge of his words.
Drawing back, Liam continues to talk but each word he says goes in one ear and out the other. No matter how hard you try and concentrate, all you can think of is Liam and Jungkook.
Jungkook helped Liam’s ex to cheat.
It’s not just the cheating. It’s the fact Jungkook did something so petty, so vindictive, it leaves your mind reeling. In fact, the story is so despicable that… you have trouble believing it.
You know – you know – you’re being naïve.
Objectively, the story sounds like something Jeon Jungkook, heir to Jeon Energy, would do. It sounds like the guy you thought Jungkook was before you knew him, the guy who exists for the tabloids and who thrives on rich people scandals. Not the Jungkook who made a special bedroom for guests and watches Ever After before bed in a desperate plea for romance.
Glancing away, you pick up your chopsticks and push Jungkook from mind. You suppose it doesn’t matter whether he did it or not. Jungkook isn’t your boyfriend – or even your friend.
Hardening yourself, you take a bite of sushi – and grimace. Across the table, Liam is doing the same. Eyes watering, he slowly sets his chopsticks down.
“I should have known,” he says. “Any sushi place recommended to me by a guy named John could never be great.”
“I’m sure it’s not that bad.”
Liam gives you a look. “Is sushi really the food you want to test your theory on?”
“On second thought,” you say, dropping the fish, “do they have karaage?”
Laughing a little, Liam flags down the waiter.
The chicken is better than the sushi, so you end up mostly full as the meal draws to a close. Liam grabs the check, leaving you shaking your head as you exit the restaurant.
“Okay, next time I’m paying,” you laugh. “I know men have this terrible need to be in control, but I promise I won’t think any less of you if I pay the bill.”
Pretending to be wounded, Liam clutches his chest. “But what about my ultra-fragile ego?”
“Tough.”
He laughs, holding the door open for you to step outside – until you turn, finding Liam hovering above.
He’s closer than you thought, his breath soft on your lips and the tension between you is taut as a wire. Even if you don’t feel as strongly, Liam is still attractive, and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t thinking about his mouth on yours.
“Liam…” you say.
“Yes?” he says, bending a little.
In response, you close your eyes and his lips brush against yours. Warmth courses through you as Liam releases the door, sliding an arm around your waist to pull you closer.
Shocked, your eyes open, and you’re met with the sight of the backs of his eyelids. This is all wrong, you panic.
In a moment, a flash goes off in your peripheral. Coldness spreads through your limbs, chasing away the warmth. Years of living with your parents taught you what that means.
Jerking away, Liam’s arm drops. His gaze cuts over your shoulder, landing on someone unseen in the bushes.
“We should go,” he murmurs. “Someone is watching.”
You nod, feeling slightly sick as you turn around. Another flash goes off and you wince, instinctively covering your face.
With an easy sort of laugh, Liam slips an arm around you to pull you closer. In another situation, the gesture might seem protective, but you can’t help but notice you remain exposed. If the paparazzi are still photographing – which is likely – they’ll get an excellent shot of Liam’s arm on your waist.
Twisting away, you step from his grasp and begin to walk faster.
“That’s enough,” Liam calls out, turning around. “You got your shot – go.”
Someone responds but you don’t hear them, heart pounding as you force your legs to continue. In the distance, horns honk and the breeze from the ocean stirs the hairs on your neck.
You make it nearly a block before Liam catches up.
“I’m sorry about that,” he pants. “I don’t know how they found us.”
“No?” you say, a bit sharper than intended.
You can’t help but overlay this moment with others, thick from your past. Dinners with family. When you broke up with Kameron. Launching Clean Ocean and the ensuing bad press. Camera flash after camera flash, coupled with rude headlines.
“I – no,” Liam says. There’s an earnestness to his voice you want to believe. “Really, Y/N. What are you saying?”
“I…” Slowing your steps, you look up and see his wounded expression. “Nothing,” you say at last. “I just don’t like being in the public eye, that’s all.”
Solemn, Liam nods and you look away. Slightly chagrined, you continue to walk in the direction of his car. Each step calms you enough to think.
Although you don’t know Liam that well, you also don’t know him well enough to distrust him. Even if he didn’t react how you would for the paparazzi, that’s not a bad thing. Liam didn’t grow up with all this. He doesn’t understand the terror of being chased by a strange man for unflattering photographs and an untruthful headline.
The remainder of your walk is silent, thoughts of the paparazzi clouding your mind. You’ve almost forgotten the kiss from earlier – almost, but not quite. Liam’s kiss only confirmed what you’ve been suspecting.
You don’t want this. You thought you might, but the idea of a relationship without love is as ridiculous as the idea of you dating Jungkook.
Reaching his car, Liam unlocks the doors. You buckle in as he enters, and once you’re both settled, Liam exhales.
“I feel like I messed this up,” he confesses, hands on the wheel. “I… I moved too fast with that kiss.”
Surprised, you glance sideways.
“No,” you insist. “No, that’s not it. Really.”
Liam gives you a wry smile. “Then, why haven’t we talked since the restaurant?”
“I – okay,” you say, facing forward. “Here’s the thing. I was kind of seeing someone else, and it recently ended.”
“Ah.”
“Yeah.” You look down. “I just don’t think I’m ready to see someone else.”
Liam exhales. “I get it.”
“You do?”
“Yeah.” Slowly, he shifts the car into drive. “I mean, I guess I should’ve known a woman as amazing as you couldn’t be single, right?”
“Right,” you respond.
Glancing away, you stifle a twinge of annoyance. You hate the narrative that only unpleasant women could be without a relationship. Not everyone desires or aspires to romance.
Liam glances at you. “Just so you know, though,” he says. “I do like you, Y/N. As more than just friends or co-workers. So, if you ever change your mind – I’m here.”
Again, you’re aware this is the type of confession which makes women swoon. Not you though, and you wonder if something inside you is broken. Maybe you only want what you can’t have.
“Thank you,” you say softly, and roll down the window.
You ride the rest of the way in silence, and Liam drops you off at your office with a promise to send over the paperwork to Hoseok. When he speeds away, you exhale and pull your phone from your pocket.
Seokjin’s name blinks across the top of your screen.
Seokjin: hey [2:14 PM]
Seokjin: I need you [2:15 PM]
Seokjin: -r help lol sorry, pressed send too soon [2:15 PM]
Seokjin: heh heh hope that didn’t get your hopes up [2:18 PM]
Rolling your eyes, you stop in the stairwell to text him back.
Y/N: Seokjin, I was the one who drove you to the ER after you took off-brand Viagra. Safe to safe any sexual spark between us is dead [2:31 PM]
Y/N: what do you want? [2:31 PM]
Seokjin’s response comes as you enter your office.
Seokjin: glad that you asked [2:35 PM]
Seokjin: I need you to come with me to dinner [2:35 PM]
Y/N: ………. what’s the catch? [2:36 PM]
Seokjin: what do you mean? Why does there have to be a catch? [2:37 PM]
Y/N: Seokjin, I’ve known you since we were in diapers. There’s always a catch [2:37 PM]
Seokjin: This time there’s not! One of our food reviewers just quit, so Conde needs me to step in to review some restaurant. It’s supposed to be good… free dinner… [2:39 PM]
Y/N: what restaurant? [2:40 PM]
Seokjin: idk, I’m supposed to get details soon. What do you say? You in? [2:41 PM]
Y/N: fine, fine, I’m in [2:41 PM]
Seokjin: you say this like free dinner at an amazing restaurant is torture. Pick you up around 7, ok? [2:43 PM]
Y/N: see you then [2:45 PM]
Exiting the thread, you take a seat at your desk and turn on your computer. While you wait for it to load, your gaze slowly drifts again to your cell phone.
An uncontrollable itch takes over and suddenly, you find yourself opening Instagram. For a few minutes, you scroll before giving in and typing the name you want.
Tapping your fingers, you wait for Jungkook’s page to load. It’s been nearly six hours since you allowed yourself to look and in that time – nothing. Releasing a breath you didn’t realize you held, you glance away.
Since Saturday, Jungkook seems to have disappeared. He posted a story on Sunday (you viewed it from Hoseok’s phone), but that’s all. Just a shot of Jungkook in his apartment watching the Ted Lasso finale. He posted a quote and a boomerang of him pretend-kicking a ball. That’s it. Since then, Jungkook’s profile has remained as empty as your text thread.
Exhaling out loud, you place your phone on the desk. Jungkook’s silence shouldn’t bother you as much as it does. As you said on Saturday, you’re over him. Easier said than done though, as your lunch with Liam proved.
At least work passes quickly, ironing details of the pre-launch party for Friday. Progress for the coastal ecosystem project is also coming along. Only Marine Cove’s participation remains a question mark – given the circumstances you should count this as a win. History has taught you many things can go wrong with a program launch.
The next time you look up, you swear and realize it’s close to six. Ripping the cord from your laptop, you toss everything in your purse and dash outside. Hoseok and Olya have already left, vanished an hour ago to check on Friday’s venue. Obviously, you’ve noticed their increased time spent together, but out of respect for Olya, have chosen to stay quiet.
For now.
At home, you take Dante on a walk and feed him his dinner. Standing in front of your closet, you frown. Seokjin not telling you the name of the restaurant means you’re flying blind. He doesn’t answer when you call him, forcing you to pick a dress which could double as casual with a sweater.
Slipping into heels as the clock strikes seven, you kiss Dante goodbye and drop him off at Jimin’s. Hurrying outside, you find Seokjin idling at the curb.
His car is something shiny and Italian with leather interiors, likely a lease from his corporate account. Opening the passenger side, you sit and quickly shut the door.
Lowering his expensive shades, Seokjin stares at your outfit. “A sweater?” he says, voice full of derision. “Honestly, Y/N, we’re not going to a drive-thru.”
Removing the sweater and tossing this in the backseat, you give Seokjin your best withering glance.
“How was I supposed to know the dress code?” you complain as he pulls away. “All you told me was ‘restaurant.’ That could mean Michelin star, or it could mean a dive. I had to dress for both occasions!”
“Michelin,” says Seokjin, putting on his blinker. “They just earned their first star. Some new chef who changed their entire menu.”
“Mm,” you say, rolling down the window. “What restaurant?”
“Chez Moi, Chez Toi.”
Your fingers freeze as slowly, you turn your head. Oblivious to your predicament, Seokjin hums beneath his breath to a song on the stereo. He makes it several obnoxious bars before noticing your stare.
“What?” He turns down the music. “What’s wrong?”
“Chez Moi, Chez Toi,” you say through gritted teeth. “Does their chef happen to be Min Yoongi?”
“Yeah.” Seokjin blinks. “I think so. Why?”
“You mean, Jeon Jungkook’s close friend, Min Yoongi?”
Now, Seokjin is the one staring at you in horror.
“… shit.”
“Ugh,” you groan, sinking further in your seat. “Okay, well, that’s it. Turn back around and drive me home. I’ll stay in.”
“No can do,” Seokjin says. “If I turn around now, I’ll miss my reservation. I need to get a review to my editor tonight.”
“Well, then drop me off at the restaurant next door. I’ll hang out there and meet you after.”
Seokjin rolls his eyes. “Don’t be dramatic, Y/N. I doubt we’ll even see Yoongi – and what does it matter if we do?”
“I– it matters,” you say, jaw snapping shut.
Seokjin gives you a look. “Come on,” he groans. “Don’t make me eat alone. How sad and pathetic would that be?”
“I eat alone all the time, Seokjin.”
He raises a brow.
A small laugh escapes you, unwilling. “Okay, fine – point taken. I’ll go. But we’re eating really fast – in and out. No appetizers.”
“No appetizers?”
“Okay, one appetizer,” you amend, remembering the buffalo chicken spring rolls Yoongi made for your fundraiser. “But just one cocktail!”
“Deal.” Seokjin turns on his blinker. “I’m driving, anyway.”
Grumbling lowly, you turn up the stereo. It’s a short drive downtown but Seokjin is right – city traffic means you arrive with only five minutes to spare. Parking as fast as he can, Seokjin exits the car and gallantly offers an arm to help you in heels.
The host must think you’re on a date since she brings you to a romantic table near the window. You keep your gaze steady on her back, refusing to look around the restaurant. Panic suddenly flares as you sit, and you chance a quick glance around to ensure Jungkook isn’t here.
He’s not and, exhaling deeply, you face forward. Seokjin watches you with an expression that says he sees far too much.
Ignoring this, you pick up the menu. “So,” you say loudly. “What are you thinking?”
“For food?”
“And for drinks.”
You clutch the menu, certain Seokjin is going to pry but for once, he chooses to let it go.
“Hm.” He scans the pages. “Conde Nast sent me a bunch of dishes to try, so why don’t we start there?”
You nod, about to respond when your waiter arrives.
Not the same one as your date, prompting further relief. In the corner of your eye, you can see the table you sat at with Jungkook. For a moment, your past self seems to overlap with the present, prompting an unbidden memory. You remember someone photographing you that night as well, but Jungkook sprang into action and led you out the back way. Unlike Liam.
Unease prickles your neck, and you wonder if photos from the paparazzi have leaked by now.
“Hello!” says the waiter brightly. “Welcome to Chez Moi, Chez Toi. Is tonight your first time dining with us?”
“Yes.” Seokjin lays down his menu. “But I’ve heard good things.”
“Well, I certainly hope we live up to them.” He smiles. “There are a lot of great options on the menu. I’m more than happy to point you towards some of my favorites.”
Seokjin shakes his head. “That won’t be necessary. Y/N,” he says, glancing your way. “Have a drink in mind?”
“Before you do that,” says the waiter.
Both you and Seokjin look at him, brows raised.
“Apologies,” he says, cheeks slightly flushed, “but I do want to point out the wine pairings noted next to each dish. Chef Min recommends ordering smaller portions of each drink to pair with the dishes you try.”
“Interesting,” Seokjin says. “Why don’t you give us a minute to decide on our food, then?”
“Of course. I’ll be back in five.”
With a nod, the waiter disappears, leaving you alone.
“Why did you send him away?” you ask. “You already know what dishes we want.”
“Right, but he can’t know that.” Seokjin opens the menu with a snap. “I’m supposed to seem like any other unbiased customer.”
“Yeah, sure. An unbiased customer with an Hermes belt.”
“Par for the course here.”
Seokjin’s not wrong, you think as you scan the restaurant. Honestly, you’re surprised to see so many faces from your parents’ circle. You were too distracted that first night to appreciate the food, but from what you remember, it was delicious and although Yoongi has a Michelin star, he’s been very vocal about striving to make his menu accessible.
This was explained by Olya before your last fundraiser – although at the time, it was in one ear and out the other. Her taste has always been impeccable, so you rarely feel the need to weigh in.
Exactly five minutes pass by, and your waiter appears to take your order. Once he retreats again, you sink in your seat and take a sip of water.
Seokjin clears his throat. “So.”
You frown. “So?”
His brows lift. “Are you really going to make me say it?”
“Say what?”
Seokjin sighs. “You’re going to make me say it. She’s going to make me say it,” he mutters to no one.
You glance around the restaurant. “Who are you talking to?”
“What happened with you and Jungkook?”
Startled, you blink, unaware you had been so obvious. Then again – you suppose you did ask Seokjin to drop you off rather than eat at a place where Jungkook’s friend works. Exhaling softly, you sink back in your seat.
“It didn’t work out,” you say quietly. “I tried to tell Jungkook how I felt, and he said he has feelings for someone else.”
Whatever he thought you were about to say, it wasn’t that.
“He – seriously?” Seokjin gapes.
“There’s no need to look so surprised,” you huff. “I’ve been wrong before. I mean – not often, I guess, but it happens.” When Seokjin’s brows furrow further, you exhale. “It’s for the best. Better than finding out his feelings later.”
“I… guess.” Seokjin considers. “And Jungkook didn’t say who he has feelings for?”
“No,” you mutter. “And I don’t want to know. It’s better this way.”
“… is it?”
“It is,” you say, adding steel to your voice. “How would knowing that make me feel better?”
“I don’t know. Closure?”
A puff of air escapes. “Overrated. All I need to know is Jungkook doesn’t want to hook up anymore. Case closed.”
Again, Seokjin scans you with his truth-seeking gaze. After a moment, he reluctantly nods. “I guess you’re right. To be honest, the whole thing seemed unlike you from the start.”
“How so?” you ask, stifling a prickle of defensiveness.
Seokjin is saved from an answer by your waiter’s return, bringing with him an appetizer and the first round of drinks. You sample the dish, nearly swooning at the taste. Equally impressed, Seokjin jots down notes in his phone.
When he’s done, he looks up.
“I mean – fuck buddies?” Reaching out, Seokjin takes a sip of his wine. “No offense, Y/N, but casual is hardly the word I’d use to describe you. Militant, sure. Passionate, yes. Good odds of winning on a survival TV show, absolutely. But casual?” He snorts. “No.”
“First off,” you say. “I would never go on a reality show. Second – militant, Seokjin? Really?”
“All I’m saying is the words, ‘casual relationship,’ wouldn’t be on my Y/N BINGO card. Especially not with someone like Jungkook.”
“He’s not a bad guy,” you respond, automatic.
Seokjin’s brows lift.
Stifling an eye roll, you smooth down your napkin. Truthfully, you don’t know why you’re arguing with Seokjin. Jungkook ended things after fucking you in a closet, not to mention the story you heard from Liam. Neither paint Jungkook in a shining light and yet, you can’t help but rebel against what Seokjin is saying.
Maybe Jungkook isn’t wholly good, but he’s not bad, either. A bad person wouldn’t send their date home to take care of their drunk friend. They wouldn’t automatically be loved by your picky dog. They wouldn’t offer you rides, walk you to your door or offer you pleasure on whatever terms you want it.
“I mean…” A heaviness settles deep in your chest. “In some ways, you’re right. From the outside, the situation doesn’t look good.”
“And yet…”
Although Seokjin is prompting, there’s no judgment to his gaze. Possibly this is what makes you continue.
“I don’t know,” you admit. “I mean – I know what some people say about Jungkook and sometimes he’s like that. Yeah, he sleeps around. Yeah, he works for the anti-Christ and sure, he can be arrogant but… he’s other things, too.”
Looking down, you fiddle with the edge of your napkin.
Seokjin can always tell what you’re thinking and right now, you’re sure your emotions are written all over your face. You like Jungkook. You like him, and it hurts more than you admit that he let you go.
Maybe if you had been honest earlier, Jungkook wouldn’t have fallen for someone else. Maybe if you’d mustered the courage to tell him – but no. It’s pointless to wonder what-if. The only situation you have is the one before you.
Rather than chide you for your naiveté, Seokjin just nods and sips his wine. Curious, you watch him drink; you’re well-aware Seokjin is rarely quiet without reason.
“You know…” He lowers his glass. “You’re not the first person I’ve heard say that about Jeon.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well.” Seokjin frowns. “I’ve heard other people say that he’s different in person. That his whole reputation is a front. Kind of.” He pauses. “People say Jungkook used to be like that, but not anymore.”
“Why? What do you think changed?”
“I don’t know. You... know what happened to his mom, right?”
Your expression tightens. “Yeah.”
“Rough, to lose a parent so young.” Seokjin pauses, then shakes his head. “From what I hear though, things started changing long before that – if they did, that is.”
“What do you mean?” you ask, curious. “What do people say?”
Leaning forward, Seokjin drops his voice. “You know my cousin who works in PR?” When you nod, he continues, “Her company supports a ton of high-profile clients – including the Jeons. Apparently, one of her co-workers is convinced they have this conspiracy. Each time Jeon Energy does something bad, Jungkook has a scandal. The public’s attention goes to him, and not to the gallons of oil Jeon Energy dumped in the Pacific.”
Your jaw sags a little. “That’s… horrible.”
“I know,” Seokjin says. “It’s only a theory, but it does make you wonder.”
Shaking your head, you reach for your wine. Mind racing, you find yourself unsure what to think. It’s a lot of information to take in – and again, it’s only a rumor.
“It’s strange, isn’t it?” Seokjin wipes his mouth on a napkin. “I never really believed her, but then you said you liked him, so… I don’t know.”
“What does my liking him have to do with anything?”
“Y/N.” Seokjin stares. “I can name like, six people you like and two of them are Dante.”
“Well, sure. He has many personalities.”
“You get my point, though.”
“Yeah, I do.” Slowly, you exhale. “It doesn’t matter though, because Jungkook and I aren’t–”
“Are you enjoying your meal?”
Startled, you turn and find Min Yoongi beside you. Sitting up a bit straighter, Seokjin drops his napkin into his lap.
“It’s good,” Seokjin says, quickly composing himself. “Are you our replacement waiter? Did we scare off the other one? I should apologize for my friend here, if so. She can be somewhat off-putting.”
This last part is said in a whisper, causing Yoongi’s eyebrows to raise. He spares you barely a glance, making your cheeks heat and you wonder what he overhead.
“Nothing like that,” Yoongi says drily. “I’m Min Yoongi, the head chef.”
Furtive, Seokjin glances around. “And are you greeting each table individually, head chef?”
“If I say yes, will you speak highly of me in your review?”
Seokjin’s eyes widen, and you relish the flabbergasted look on his face. It’s a rare person who can fluster him and when it does happen, it’s a remarkable sight. Flashing Seokjin a smile, Yoongi turns to face you.
His expression tightens. “I know you,” Yoongi says.
“I – yes.” You hasten to reply. “I’m Y/N Y/L/N. I run the Clean Ocean organization. You catered for my fundraiser a while back?”
“Ah, yes. That must be it.”
Something in his face warns you this isn’t all, but before you can respond, Yoongi turns again.
Seokjin sits back. “How did you know I’m reviewing your restaurant? Do I have the aura of someone with a refined palate?”
“No.” Yoongi’s lips twitch. “Actually, your assistant made your reservation from their work email.”
Not to be deterred, Seokjin drops a wink. “And what about now that you’ve seen me in person? Refined palate aura?”
To your surprise, Yoongi laughs.
You nearly give yourself whiplash, glancing between them. It’s equally rare for someone to keep up with Seokjin and when this happens, it spells love or disaster. Based on Seokjin’s grin, you’d guess the former.
“And what would a refined palate aura look like?”
Seokjin’s voice deepens. “You know when you look at someone and think, ‘I bet they eat well.’”
Yoongi’s expression slackens, a gleam of interest entering his gaze.
“O-kay,” you cut in before they can go any further. “I think what Seokjin is trying to say is the food is incredible. As are the wine pairings,” you add. “Our waiter mentioned you have an in-house sommelier?”
“Close.”
“I – sorry?” you say, taken aback.
“I said, close.” Yoongi turns. “A sommelier made the pairings for us, but they aren’t in-house. It was a friend of mine, actually.”
Your fingers freeze as you gain a sinking suspicion of who this friend is.
Entirely oblivious, Seokjin continues. “Oh, really?” he asks. “What’s their name? I’ll be sure to mention them in my review. Since the cat’s already out of the bag,” he adds, grumbling a little as he opens his notes.
“Sure. The name’s Jeon Jungkook.”
Seokjin’s fingers still on his keys. “Ah.” He pauses, then swallows. “Okay, right. Jeon Jungkook. Thank you, Chef Min.”
Glancing your way, Seokjin has a guilty expression you choose to ignore. Smoothing your napkin, you focus instead on your water.
“Call me Yoongi.” Yoongi nods. “Enjoy your food.”
With that, he turns and strides across the restaurant. Seokjin watches him leave, waiting until he’s out of earshot before giving a whistle.
“Damn,” Seokjin says, his gaze dropping. “That tiny man has an ass.”
“Seokjin! That is not what’s important right now.”
“To you.” When your glare only increases, Seokjin snorts. “Okay, fine,” he says. “What’s important?”
Glancing around, you lean forward. “Did he seem weird just now?”
“Who? Yoongi?”
You nod.
“I don’t know.” Seokjin shrugs. “I just met him.”
“He seemed weird,” you insist, your voice dropping. “I met him at my fundraiser, and he was much nicer. Quiet, but nice. That was…”
“Expected?” Seokjin supplies. He shrugs at your look. “I mean, come on, Y/N. He’s Jungkook’s friend.”
“What does that mean?”
“Well, I – oh my god,” Seokjin moans, placing the steak in his mouth. “This filet is amazing, Y/N. Have you tried it?”
“Seokjin.”
“Right, sorry.” He swallows. “What was I saying?”
“Jungkook.”
“Oh, yeah. Jungkook. I’m just saying, who knows what he’s told his friends? Yoongi was probably giving you side-eye because he knows what happened between you.”
“But that’s just it!” you protest. “What could he know that would prompt that kind of response? Jungkook was the one who ended things, not me.”
“I don’t know.” Seokjin shrugs, unconcerned. “It’s only a theory. But if you’re out here shit-talking Jungkook, he’s probably shit-talking about you to Yoongi. It’s the circle of life, or whatever.”
“I am not shit-talking Jungkook to you.”
Seokjin gives you a look which makes you wither a little. “Alright, fine,” you say. “Maybe I’ve shit-talked him a little. But I was the dumpee.”
“And I thought you two weren’t dating.”
“I – you – well, you know what I mean,” you sputter.
Smiling triumphantly, Seokjin moves on to the tuna tartar.
Slightly subdued, you’re forced to admit Seokjin has a point. It shouldn’t bother you what Jungkook tells his friends because you two weren’t together. It doesn’t make sense that you’re here, talking about Jungkook to Seokjin. If anything, you should be asking his advice about Liam.
And yet, you haven’t, and Seokjin hasn’t offered. Likely because he knows Liam means nothing to you in the long run. You also should have mentioned Liam’s story when talking about Jungkook’s past. Seokjin possibly could have shed light on it.
Maybe you didn’t tell him purpose, says a voice in your head. Because if the Liam story is true and Jungkook’s heartbreaker façade is who he really is, then the man you have feelings for doesn’t exist.
Catching the slip of present tense, you close your eyes. Even your subconscious betrays you, reaching for a man who might not be real. Apparently, your feelings aren’t something sheer force of will can dissolve.
Neither can it lessen the hollowness in your chest.
For the rest of your meal, you don’t turn your head and by the time it’s over, you’re more confused than before. Your phone burns in your pocket the entire drive home.

Chapter 12:
They think that it’s over but it’s just begun…

TW: mentions of eating disorder, misogynist / sexist comments
Thailand. Sun. Fun. Beach. Cocktails. Family. The last 7 days went by in a breeze of snorkeling, surfing, sunbathing, sunrises and sunsets on the beach, long nights by the pool, board games, movie nights and delicious food. It was perfect to relax and calm down before the day to day life of recovery, therapy and nutrition charts would be the main focus in my life again.
I watched as Liam on Charles' shoulders and Benji on Arthur’s had a little water fight in the pool and laughed when Liam pushed Benji off of Arthur into the water, splashing all of us in the process.
"We won, Charlie!" Liam shouted and did a little victory dance on Charles’ shoulders.
"That we did, Bubba!" Charles said and laughed "But now, prepare for the end!" and with that he let himself fall back into the water, dumping Liam.
"Let’s do it again!" were his first words as soon as he emerged from the water. Charles just chuckled and did it again and again.
"Liam, let’s give Charles a little break, what are you saying?" Sissy said and Liam just pouted at her "It’s his vacation, too!"
Liam sighed and climbed out of the pool, sitting down next to me.
"I didn’t say you have to get out!" Sissy said and rubbed his arm gently "Just that Charles needs a little break, okay? You want me to play with you?"
"No, it’s ok." Liam whispered and got up.
"Where are you going, Bubba?" I asked him but he just shrugged his shoulders, walking past me, back into the house. I saw how Charles watched him leave and he looked at me, but I shrugged my shoulders, just like Liam did. I got up as Charles got out of the pool, quickly dried himself up and followed me inside, looking for Liam.
"Is it still because of the Christmas party from the nursery school?" Charles asked me and I shook my head
"I have no idea…" I answered as we searched for Liam, finding him in his bedroom that he shared with his mother.
"Hey, little one!" I said and walked in "What are you doing?"
"Reading…" he answered and I chuckled a little.
"You’re not even 3, you’re not supposed to be able to read already!" I said and he shrugged his shoulders.
"I’m not really reading… It’s a comic, I see the pictures and know what’s happening and then I figure the words out…" he whispered and Charles looked impressed.
"You’re the smartest kid I’ve ever met! You’re not even 3 but you already speak German, English and French! And now you’re telling me that you’re reading a comic!" Charles smiled at Liam who only looked up once, smiling a little and then continued.
"Frau Lauter says that’s because I’m used to all 3 languages since my birth…and I’m not really reading." he explained quietly.
"You know that your Mum didn’t mean it in a bad way? She wasn’t scolding you, Bubba. She just meant that since we’re here Charles hadn’t had a quiet moment… so she just wanted you to let him relax a little…" I began and Liam nodded, closing his comic.
"I’m sorry Charlie, I didn’t want to annoy you, please don’t hate me now… I’ll leave you alone from now on." Liam said and got up and I could see the tears in his eyes, but before he could walk away Charles grabbed his hand and pulled him gently back.
"Hey, hey, hey! No one said something about you annoying me! And I don’t want you to leave me alone! And why on earth would you think I could hate you?" Charles' voice was sweet and comforting and Liam just looked down on the floor "What’s going on?" Liam sniffled and looked at Charles.
"I saw the pictures in the group chat from the nursery school on Mama’s phone… There were a lot of family pictures… and all the other kids… they all have a dad and they all celebrated Christmas together, but I didn't! Why doesn’t my dad want me?" he cried and my heart broke. Charles pulled Liam in his lap and hugged him close to his chest "Did I do something to him? Is something wrong with me? Why does he hate me?" his sobbing got worse and Charles gently stroked his back.
"There is nothing wrong with you and you didn’t do anything wrong, Liam! You’re perfect the way you are and we all love you so, so much! It’s your dad’s fault! And only his, that he doesn’t want to get to know such an amazing little boy like you, you hear me? He’s the one who does something wrong and not you! I know it hurts seeing all of your friends having fun with their dads, that is something I can’t change, although I wish I could, believe me! But no matter what it is, you know you can always come to me? And not only me! To all of us! Okay?" Charles said as he gently wiped the tears from Liam's face "I love you, my Bubba! Never forget that! Your dad is missing out on having the most amazing little fella as his kid… his loss!" Liam smiled a little.
"Sometimes I wish, you were my dad…" he whispered and snuggled into Charles arms, who choked up, tears in his eyes.
"I might not be your dad, Liam, but I will always be there for you, whenever you need me!" Charles answered quietly and kissed his head, then he looked up at me, gesturing for me to come closer. I scooted over and he pulled me into his side, then he kissed my temple and just then I realised the tears that were streaming down my face.
"Your dad is an idiot for not wanting to be your dad, my pretty boy! He missed out on so much!" I said and Liam looked up at me before he kissed my nose and made himself comfortable between myself and Charles. After a while Liam’s sniffling died down and he breathed evenly. I looked down and saw that he fell asleep.
"I hate him so much for doing this to him." I whispered and Charles nodded "I understand why he wants you as his dad. You’re amazing."
"I mean, he makes it easy, you know?" he answered and I smiled at him.
"Yeah, that might be true, but still. You’re going to be an amazing dad!" I said and Charles blushed a little.
"Just like you’re going to be an amazing mum…" he looked at me intently and my eyes wandered to his lips. Soft and plush and right in front of me, only leaning in a little. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, feeling Charles' warm breath fanning over my face as Liam stirred and we both looked down.
I shook my head. Why did these thoughts enter my mind so often in the last days? I looked over at Charles who smiled at me. I swallowed hard and looked out into the jungle.
I didn’t know how long we sat like this and when I fell asleep, but when I opened my eyes, I laid in the bed I shared with Charles. Liam next to me and Charles on his other side, both fast asleep. I carefully got up and left the room, making as little noise as possible. Downstairs the rest of the family was gathered around the kitchen, with Mum, Pascale, Lisa and Sissy preparing some food, Carla and Arthur setting the table, Dad and Marcus busy with the barbecue on the terrace and Lorenzo and Benji playing Connect Four.
"Hey, I wanted to come up and wake you guys." Sissy said as I walked over to the kitchen and grabbed a glass from a shelf, filling it with some sparkling water. My head was pounding and I downed the glass in one go.
"Yeah, I’ll go and get them in a minute…" I mumbled, sitting down on a stool.
"You don’t look good, ma fille?" Pascale said as she filled my glass again.
"Yeah, crying a lot and falling asleep on the floor isn’t really a good combination…" I answered and Sissy looked up "I don’t even know how I got into bed?"
"Charles carried you two, you were so entangled with each other that he didn’t want to separate you and wake you up. And as he laid you down, Liam had his arm in an iron grip, so yeah…" Sissy explained and I looked at the clock over her shoulder, we slept for almost 3 hours.
"Did Charles tell you what Liam said?" I asked her and she nodded.
"Yeah, he did…" she sighed.
"I’m sorry." I mumbled but Sissy shook her head.
"No, it is what you guys said! He’s the one at fault here and he’s the one missing out on him! His loss!" she answered and I heard Liams faint giggling behind me, I turned around and Charles came down the stairs, with Liam on his hip, holding tight onto him.
"Smells amazing! What are we having? Bubba and I woke up from the delicious smell!" he said and nuzzled his nose against Liams cheek who giggled even louder.
"We’re huuuungry!" he laughed and Charles sat him down next to me, before he grabbed two glasses, filling them with water and setting one down in front of Liam. Then he kissed his head and walked over to the barbecue "I could eat a whole buffalo!"
"Well, a nice steak must be enough, beef, no buffalo, sorry little man!" Dad said and turned the meat on the barbecue "If you’re done ladies, I think we can eat!"
We set all the delicious smelling and looking food down on the huge table on the terrace and sat down, Liam not leaving Charles' side. When we were all sitting down Dad raised his glass.
"Cheers to our wonderful family, having again the most amazing time together! Cheers to us and to the beautiful Thailand!" he said and we all toasted our glasses together.

"How’s the therapy going?" JK asked as we made our way back home after our 5km run.
"It’s good, slowly but steady." I answered and he nodded.
"What did you tell your family? And Charles?" he looked at me and I sighed.
"I told them about the eating disorder and how this constant positivity was doing nothing but dragging me down, that I struggled a lot with anxiety and still do… and well yeah Charles found out about Camille, how she treated me and we had a good conversation after he broke up with her… I told him that she triggered my anxiety and also that she was the main reason for my eating disorder…" I said and JK smiled at me.
"I’m proud of you, Liz! Really! Your blood results were always good. Christian said you were always attending therapy if not in person than at least via phone or zoom. You made huge progress in your recovery! Amazing!" he said and as we arrived at home I took a deep breath. Feeling how much easier it was to breathe after such a run "You need your spray?"
"Yeah, but it’s not too bad, like I don’t need it immediately? It’s okay…" I said and JK gently patted my back.
"You see… it’s getting better and better with each day! When we continue like this? I’d say you’ll sit in April already in the car again!" he smiled and I nodded.
"That would be amazing!" I answered "Now come on! Stretching and a bit of weights!"
"Let’s go!" he answered and we went inside.
After our holiday in Thailand I’ve been training a lot. Going twice a week to therapy, even had once a week a cooking session with a nutritionist. It was all going extraordinarily well. My lung capacity was increasing on a daily basis. Less and less I needed the inhalator after longer runs. My legs weren’t burning that bad anymore but most importantly: my back felt great. The bones in my spine were almost completely healed, the screws and titan plate were doing an amazing job. I was more than a little relieved. Maybe I could be back in the car sooner than I thought? I only needed someone to let me drive.
Charles POV:
"That looks fire, Joris!" I said as I watched the edit of Lizzie’s highlights in karting, GP3, F2 and WSeries "That should seal the deal! I only need to send it now to Seb and then we wait!" I couldn’t wait for Seb to see the video. I sent it to him and waited for his response. Just 5 minutes later my phone rang.
"Hi Seb!" I greeted him.
"Hey Charles, how are you doing?" the German driver asked.
"Good, good. And you? How’s the family?"
"Everything’s fine! The video? Amazing! If they see that? That should seal the deal!" Seb said excitedly.
"Yeah, I said the same to Joris! I really hope this will help!" I said.
"It’s a good reminder how amazing she is!" Seb replied and I nodded.
"Yeah, I guess that’s all we can do? Remind them how great she is!" I sighed a little.
"I’ll send it over and then we’ll see. I gotta go now, but as soon as I hear something, I’m calling you! Bye Charles!"
"Hear you soon, bye Seb!" and the line went dead.
"Seb will send it to Audi?" Joris asked and I nodded.
"Yeah… I really hope it will help! Lizzie deserves a seat! But above all she needs to get back in the car otherwise she will go crazy!" I answered and sat down on the sofa "I mean, she’s doing great, she gets healthier each day! But it’s just- for now she’s busy with her recovery and everything, but I’m afraid how she will feel as soon as she’s fit again and she has nothing more to do…"
"Audi will give her a chance! I’m sure!" Joris said and patted my back "And as soon as she’s finally on the grid and all her dreams come true you can confess your feelings for her and you two can finally start dating!"
"Ha-ha! Funny guy…" I rolled my eyes but Joris just shrugged his shoulders.
"I’m manifesting it…" he said and I chuckled.
"Keep doing that!" I said and Joris patted my back.
I looked up, as an unknown number called me.
"Who has my number in Munich?" I said and dad looked up.
"I don’t know? Take the call and you know it?" he answered, muting the TV.
"Hello?" I accepted the call.
"Hello, is this Lizzie? Lizzie Doetterer?" a male voice asked.
"Yes, that’s me." I answered.
"Perfect, hi Lizzie, can I call you Lizzie? My name is Felix Bayer, I’m the CEO and future Team Principal of the Audi Sport Formula 1 Team." he introduced himself and I was shell shocked, dad looking at me worried.
"Umm, hi Mr. Bayer!" I pressed out anxiously.
"Please, call me Felix! I’m calling you to ask you if you’re interested in testing out our Formula 1 car for us? We would like to have you here in our faculties first, for a seat fitting and some simulator work, before we test out the car on a real racetrack. What are you saying?" Felix explained.
"You want me? Are you sure?" I asked nervously.
"Yes? Aren’t you the Lizzie Doetterer who won the F2 championship with an 80+ points gap in 2018 and the WSeries in 2019?" he answered and I laughed.
"I mean, I am, but still… why?" I was confused, who would want me to test their car?
"Because we hope that if we work well together and the car suits you, that you’ll be one of our drivers for the 2022 Formula 1 season!" Felix said and I dropped my phone, the loud clatter made me jump and I picked it back up.
"You mean as your reserve driver, right?" I asked and he laughed.
"No, we hoped you would agree to be one of our 2 main drivers! If you’re interested of course." he answered.
"YES! Yes! Of course!" I almost shouted "I’m sorry! I’m just… wow, you’re not joking? This is serious? You want me?"
"No, I’m not joking. Yes, we really want you! I have all your contact details, don’t worry. I’ll send you an email with everything you need to know, with the dates and stuff." he said and I nodded.
"Ok, umm perfect! Yes! Send it, I’ll wait!" my voice was shaking.
"Any more questions?" Felix asked.
"No, wait… yes! You said 2022 season? Next year?" I asked.
"Yes, it’s a secret for now, but as soon as you’ve tested the car and everything is set, the official announcement comes shortly after! I’ll leave you to it, for now! Have a nice day and I’ll call you in the next few days, alright?" he said.
"Yes! Perfect! Thank you! Have a nice day too! Goodbye!" I said.
"Goodbye, Lizzie."
I put the phone down and Dad looked at me worried.
"Lizzie? What’s going on?" he asked me and I just stared at him.
"Can you get Mum?" I asked and he nodded and got up, I sent a quick text to Charles if I could call him and a second later my phone rang.
"What’s up, ma belle?" he smiled at me and I smiled back "What’s going on?"
"Alright, we’re here!" Dad said and returned with Mum "Oh, hi Charles!"
"Hi guys? What’s going on?" Charles waved at my parents as I turned my phone so he could see them and they both shrugged their shoulders.
"Guys, I just got a call from Felix Bayer… future Team Principal of the Audi Sport Formula 1 team… he asked me if I wanted to test out their new car and when I like it… if I wanted to be one of their main drivers for the team for the 2022 Formula 1 season…" I said and it got quiet for a moment before they all started to scream and shout.
"What!!?!?! WHAT? Congratulations!"
"We knew you would make it one day!"
"I’m so happy for you!"
"We’re so proud of you!"
"No one deserves a seat more than you, ma belle!"
Mum and Dad both hugging me, Charles just smiling at me from the screen.
"Thank you guys! Really! I would’ve never come this far without you!" I cried and Dad wiped away my tears.
"You did it because you’re the strongest person out there!" he said and hugged me again.
"We have to celebrate!" Charles said and I laughed.
"You’re leaving in 2 days for Bahrain! There’s no time to celebrate! I mean, we shouldn’t celebrate already! What if I test out the car and I suck and they say thank you, next!" I sighed and Dad nudged my shoulder.
"Pessimistic much? Stop that! They want you, you’ll be amazing. Period!" he said and Charles nodded.
"Exactly! What about, you go, have the seat fitting and whatever you need to do and then you guys come to Bahrain?" Charles asked and I nodded, we had already planned on me joining him for his first race and as Mum and Dad said nothing against it Charles smiled "Perfect! I’ll take care of it!"
"No you’re not, we’re doing that ourselves!" Dad interjected but Charles didn’t react, in fact he didn’t even flinch "Charles?"
"So-… what? Ba-… co-…! Can’t he-…! Ca-… lat-…! Bye!" and with that he hung up.
"Did he just faked, having no service? In the middle of Monaco? At home? Next to his WiFi router?" Dad stared at the screen and I had to contain my laughter.
"Hi Lizzie, I’m Pete, one of the race engineers. It’s good to meet you!" one of the men working at the car walked up to me.
"We’re hoping, if everything works out the way we plan, that Pete would be your race engineer?" Felix explained and Pete nodded.
"We’ll see how today works out, I’d say and then we go from there!"
"So that’s the beauty?" I asked and walked around the car "Looks good! I like the side pods and the floor fence looks different then on the other F1 cars?"
"Yeah we’re playing with different designs, this one had the best results in terms of aerodynamics." Pete said and I nodded.
"That’s a smaller rear wing? I reckon there’s a bigger one as well?" I kneeled down to look at the rear wing flap.
"Yes, that’s the smallest one we have. We have two more, basically small, medium, large." he chuckled a little.
"I’m not gonna lie, it’s been a while since I drove an F1 car… and with the new regulations, there is a lot I don’t know or understand yet, but I will give it my all, to catch up with everything!" I said and Felix patted my shoulder a little.
"Don’t worry Lizzie, for now we just want the feedback from the simulator. As soon as the guys have the data to analyse, the car will change totally! So I’d say let them work and we’re going to the sim!" he said and I followed him.
The Audi faculties were amazing, everything was new, looked shiny and fancy. And the technology and equipment was from the highest quality. Newest standard. The simulator looked amazing.
"Hop on in and let’s go!" Felix said and I smiled at him.
"Alright, then let’s start!" I answered and got into the simulator.
After almost 3 hours Felix waved at me and I took off the headset.
"How was it?" he asked and I smiled at him.
"Amazing! It feels good to be back in the car. I mean… you know. This is as close as it gets." I said and got out.
"Yeah, you seemed to have a lot of fun! That’s good! That’s important!" he said and I smiled at him "We’re having lunch now, I’d like you to meet the whole engineer team."
"Perfect!" I nodded and waved to the two data analysts that were sitting behind the simulator.
After Lunch, it was time for the seat fitting. I felt giddy and excited, getting back into the car after such a long time. I took my shoes off and climbed in, scooted down and as soon as I sat right and looked ahead I felt overwhelmed.
"How does it feel?" Pete asked next to me.
"Amazing!" I answered, voice choked up.
"I’ll give you a moment." Pete whispered and patted my arm, before he waved the other engineers to follow him.
After such a long time returning back into the car, a chance to drive next season, the long recovery it all flooded my mind and I took a deep breath. The feeling was great. The car felt great. I grabbed the steering wheel and closed my eyes. Thought about driving the car on a track.
"What’s the verdict?" Felix asked and crouched down next to me.
"When can we get this beauty on a track?" I replied and he chuckled.
"I’d say we need some time to further develop the car after we gathered the data from your sim work and then I guess we’re ready!" he said and I climbed out of the car.
"I can’t wait." I smiled at him "Is there a track nearby? Or where do we test the car?"
"I thought about Hockenheim."
"It was amazing! The facilities? It was all hightech! The newest technologies! It looked like something from the future! I swear! And the engineers? The mechanics? The analysts? They’re all so friendly! And funny! And the car? Charles, it’s amazing! The simulator! It was so fast! Pete said they collected some good data from the sim work and they will develop the car further! And now the best! The track we’re testing on? Hockenheim! Charles, I will be driving at home!" I told Charles and he smiled at me.
"That sounds amazing! I’m really happy for you! And you said on the 12th? You know I’ll be there! I’m so excited!" Charles said and I nodded "And I’m sure Seb will be there too!"
"I can’t believe it, Charles! It’s like… god! Charlie, if I'm making no mistakes and make some good laps, I’ll be driving in F1 next year! Can you believe it?" I looked at him and he just hugged me.
"I had no doubt, ma belle!" he whispered and I sighed "Finally our dream comes true!"
"Amazing!" I said and sat down on the sofa.
"Very amazing!" Charles said and sat down next to me.
"So… tomorrow. First time I’ll see the Ferrari crew again…" I began and Charles pulled me into his side.
"Most of the team didn’t understand their decision… Gino was mad! But it doesn’t matter anymore! You’re now driving for Audi anyway. You don’t need them!" he said and I nodded.
"Yeah… you’re right." I mumbled "It’s still awkward."
"I know, but I’ll be there. It’s going to be fine, ma belle. Show them how strong you are!" Charles said and I looked up at him, his eyes full of love and pride.
"What would I do without you?" I whispered and he leaned down a little, I felt the butterflies going crazy in my stomach.
"You’ll never find out. It’s you and me against the world, ma belle. Always." he said, being as close as ever.
"P4! Charlie is on P4!" Liam chirped and we all cheered for him.
"He did a great job!" Dad clapped excitedly.
"Can we go to him?" Liam asked and I shook my head.
"He’ll be here any minute, Bubba!" I said and we waited for Charles to return. "He’s not going to be happy.”
"It was the best he could achieve with the car…" Dad whispered and I nodded "But yeah, you’re probably right."
And I was right. When Charles entered the garage he thanked the team and walked up to us, Liam already jumping at him.
"You’re P4 Charlie! That’s so good!" Liam smiled at him and I could see the tension falling off of him.
"Yeah, it’s not bad! I can work with that!" he smiled at him and walked over to us.
"Hey Charlie bear! You did good!" I whispered as I hugged him.
"Thanks, ma belle!" he whispered back.
"Tomorrow is the race, Charles! You’ll do great!" Dad said and Charles smiled.
"I’ll do my best."
I watched Liam curling up on Charles, falling asleep, after a couple of minutes. I gently tapped Charles' knee who looked up.
"I can lay him down?" I whispered but Charles shook his head, hugging Liam closer.
"No, he’s like my comfort blanket!" he said and I smiled.
"Don’t be too hard on yourself… it was only the first race of the season." I said and he closed his eyes, leaning his head back.
"A McLaren overtook me… I don’t know. I thought our car will be better this season." he mumbled and looked out of the window into the night sky.
"Let’s see how the next races go!" I said and he nodded.
"Yeah, we’ll see."
The whole drive to Hockenheim felt unreal. I would be driving a real F1 car for the first time in years! The last time was in 2018, when I drove Charles Sauber in FP1 in Hungary.
"Nervous?" Dad asked and I shook my head.
"Nope. Excited!" I smiled.
"It’s going to be amazing! You will fly!" Charles said and Joris nodded.
"I guess we’ll see!" I said, looking outside, seeing the Südtribune in front of us.
"Don’t worry, Lizzie, you got this!" Joris said and I smiled.
"Alright! Ready?" Dad asked as we parked the car, walking towards the entrance where a group of men already waited for us. I saw Felix, Pete, some of the mechanics I met and Sebastian, who smiled at me and pulled me in for a big hug.
"Hey you!" he said and released me.
"Hi Seb! Thank you so much for coming!" I replied and Seb nodded.
"Nothing could’ve stopped me from seeing you today! I’m so proud of you!" he looked serious but his smile was genuine "This will change everything!"
I greeted the rest of the group, introducing my dad, Charles and Joris.
"I’d say let’s go, right?" Felix clapped his hands and we followed him in.
30 minutes later I was suited and booted and climbed into the car, got strapped in and made a successful radio check.
Then I waited for the flag and accelerated, starting with some out laps to warm up the tyres. The car felt amazing. After 5 test laps I was ready for my first timed lap.
"Pete? I think I’m good to go!"
"Alright. Then drive into the first grid box and we will start the lights."
"Copy."
I did as told and waited for the lights to turn out. I saw Dad, Charles, Joris and Seb standing at the fence, cheering me on and I smiled. This was it. I could prove myself. I could show everyone how good I really was and most importantly, I could show it to the people who always believed in me. One last deep breath. And the lights were out.
I was flying through the 17 turns, trying my best to hit the apex at all the right times, not going to hard over the curbs. As I was crossing the finish line I let out a euphoric scream. It felt amazing. Exhausting. But amazing.
"That was fantastic. Do one out lap and then another flying lap."
"Copy."
I warmed my tyres and found myself again in the grid box and again I accelerated when the lights went out. This time I felt like I was even faster than before.
"Alright Lizzie, box after this lap"
"Okay."
They showed me the data, where I should adjust my driving, and where to brake less. I drank some water and after I got some fresh tires I drove back on track. It’s been a long time since I had this much fun.
Lap after lap after lap I drove, getting faster and faster. But after a while I could feel my back starting to hurt a little. My arms and legs were getting exhausted, my head got heavier with each lap. I knew that this would happen eventually. But I was proud that I made it this far.
"Alright Lizzie, one last set of softs for the last lap of the day."
"Copy." I drove into the pits, got my fresh tires and started to warm my tires. One last lap to show them how good I am! Now it was important to set the best lap time of the day.
"You were flying! I told you so!" Charles pulled me in for a hug as soon as I was out of the car.
"You did an amazing job, kiddo!" Seb said and I smiled at him.
"Fantastic job, Lizzie. Get out of your suit, have something to drink and then let’s get all inside to check your lap times!" Pete said and I smiled at him.
"Alright!" I replied and walked into the little locker room to change. I sat down. Took some deep breaths. I did it. I really did it. I ignored the throbbing in my back and legs, for now I was happy.
"So, your first lap was a 1:28:45, that’s decent. Since the new car regulations we have no data to compare the time for real. Although we got some simulator times from Alfa Romeo, Giovinazzi drove it. So loosely we’ve got some times. Your best time was in fact your last lap, with a 1:21:07. More than 7 seconds faster than your first lap! That’s impressive!" Pete showed us the graphs and Seb patted my back.
"Damn good job, Lizzie!" he said, proudly.
"What was the lap time of the Alfa Romeo?" I asked and Pete pointed at the screen.
"1:23:59." he said and I looked at him.
"I was faster than the Alfa Romeo?" I exclaimed and Pete nodded.
"Over 1.5 seconds to be exact. Well done Lizzie! This was only your first session! Amazing job!" he said and I checked the screen again.
"I guess, it’s now only a formality, but Lizzie, we at the Audi Sport F1 Team want you as one of our drivers for the next season. What are you saying?" Felix asked and I smiled.
"YES! Of course it’s a YES!" I almost shouted it and Dad hugged me to his side.
"I’m so proud of you, my little owl!" he whispered and I choked up a little.
"You guys have no idea what this means to me! Thank you all so much!" I said and wiped the tears from my eyes.

Charles POV:
When we arrived at home later in the evening we walked in on Sissy on the phone with someone, looking annoyed.
"Yeah, thank you. You too." she hung up and sighed.
"What’s going on?" Lizzie asked and opened the fridge and handed Juergen, Joris and me a bottle of water before she grabbed one for herself. Juergen and Joris walked over into the living room where Joris showed Juergen some of the shots he made today. Lizzie and I looked at Sissy.
"That was the nursery school. There was a little problem today." she said and Lizzie and I looked intently at her.
"What happened?” I asked.
"They were playing with race cars and there was a Ferrari… your Ferrari. And Liam said that this is his uncle's car, he’s driving it for work… well they didn’t believe him, calling him a liar, saying that you’re not his uncle and when Liam started to cry they started making fun of him, so he hit one of them…" Sissy explained and I looked at Liam, who was sitting at the counter, staring at his lap.
"I’d say well done! Glad that I don’t have to go there, kicking their asses!" Lizzie mumbled and I had to contain my laughter.
"So it’s okay when they’re bullying him, but it’s not okay when he defends himself? Again?" I asked and she sighed.
"I don’t know what to do… I mean, I told him to not talk about you anymore, but now that he said it once they will use it to agitate him…" she sat down and leaned back.
"Well, I know what we‘re doing…" I walked over to Liam "So, tomorrow I‘ll be picking you up from nursery school. And then you can show me the kids… I would love to say hello to them." He looked up with big eyes.
"Can you do that?" he asked excitedly and I nodded.
"When they’re messing with you, they’re messing with me!" I answered and he leaped into my arms "It’s going to be ok, Bubba." I heard him sniffle a bit.
"That’s why you’re my favourite uncle!" he whispered and I almost choked. Now I was even more determined to kick their asses. Verbally.
Monaco was again a weekend to forget, not just the abstruse conspiracy theories going around what car I was driving in Hockenheim and why Audi commented. No it was also another heartbreak weekend for Charles.
He looked horrible. Sitting on the railing. Eyes downcast. Cap drawn down as far as possible. I saw how many of the other drivers walked over to him, comforting him, but although he smiled faintly at them, I could see the pain in his eyes. He was on pole in his home race. He had every chance there is to finally be able not just to finish a race here, not but to win in, but a technical issue with the car destroyed his dream. His race was over before it even started. And the nagging feeling if the mechanical failure was a consequence from his crash in qualifying yesterday was omnipresent. He slowly made his way back to the garage after a quick chat with Seb and a last hug. He looked crestfallen as he walked in, thanking but also apologising to all the mechanics and each and everyone in the garage before he made his way up to me. I hugged him tight. Gently stroking his back.
"I’m so sorry, Charlie! I’m so, so sorry!" I whispered and I could feel my shirt dampen a little. I held him for a couple of minutes like this, then he pulled away.
"It’s my fault. It’s all my fault. I destroyed all of our hopes. Why did I push the car so much?" he mumbled.
"Because you always want to be the best. And yesterday you were a bit too eager, Charles! It’s okay… I mean, no it’s not, but you know what I mean… you’ll come back stronger! Now let’s get you out of your suit and watch the race from your room. Or rather not watch it… whatever you want!" I said quietly and he let go of me.
"Yeah, let’s go." he answered, devastated and took my hand, dragging me back into his driver's room.
Charles POV:
"Are you sure you can handle him? Like all on your own? He’s a handful! And I don’t want you to be stressed!" Lizzie asked me and I nodded.
"Yep. That’s okay, we will watch Arthur and then we’ll go back into the garage and I’ll show him everything and then you guys are coming anyway, right? Relax, Lizzie! For some reason I always have a good feeling around here in Spielberg! It’s going to be alright!" I said and Liam had the biggest smile on his face.
"Liam, you have to listen to everything that Charles says, okay? Usually we’re a lot more people having an eye on you, so please stay by his side and listen!" Juergen said and the little one just giggled.
"I will listen to everything that Charlie says! And I will not leave his side! I’ll always stay close to him! Can we go now please? I want to see Arthi race!" Liam pulled me towards the door and I waved Lizzie and her Dad goodbye.
"He was pretty good! P3 is good, right?" Liam asked as I sat him on the fence, waiting for Arthur to get out of his car to congratulate him.
"It is good! Really good!" I answered and Arthur came up to us.
"Arthi!" Liam yelled and Arthur took him in his arms.
"Hello little man! No wonder I was driving this good when you cheered for me!" he said and Liam giggled "You have to come to every race from now on!"
"I will!" Liam said and Arthur handed him back to me and I hugged him.
"Good race! Well done!" I said and Arthur smiled.
"More wasn’t manageable. So I’ll take it!" he said and his Team congratulated him.
"Come on Bubba, we gotta go back now. The guys need the space now!" I sat Liam down and he took my hand.
"Can I sit in your car?" he asked after a while and I nodded.
"I think we can do that." I answered and his face lit up.
"So cool! You have to take a picture of me! And send it to Mama! And she can show it to everyone at nursery school! So they’re all jealous!" Liam said and I laughed.
"100 % we’re doing that!" I said and he smiled happily.
Back in the garage I talked to some of the mechanics and then I sat Liam down into the car.
"That is so awesome!" he almost yelled and I laughed.
"Alright now put your hands on the steering wheel and look totally focused ahead. Yes exactly! Perfect! Now one big smile for Mama… wow! Perfect!" I took some pictures and sent them to his mother and Lizzie.
It was when one of the mechanics pointed something out at my front wing and I crouched down to him, when I lost sight of Liam for 3 seconds. 3 seconds too much. As I looked into the cockpit he was gone.
"Have you guys seen Liam?" I asked the guys working at my car and they all shook their heads. I frantically searched in every nook and cranny in the garage, unsuccessful. My driver's room. No Liam. Next I walked back into the Ferrari hospitality, asked everyone, but with no success. I felt the bile rise up my throat. Panic setting in. How did I lose him? What if something happened to him? My heart was beating in my throat.
"Charles, mate are you ok?" Daniel asked as he saw me running around the paddock.
"I lost my nephew. Lizzie‘s going to kill me! Juergen is going to kill me! Oh god his mum is going to kill me!" I began to hyperventilate.
"Ok, Charles. Breathe. Where have you seen him last?" Daniel asked and I looked at him.
"He was in my garage, in my car. I looked away for not even 3 seconds and he’s gone." I said it fast and Daniel only nodded.
"Does he know anyone here? Besides you? Someone he might’ve seen and run after?" Daniel asked and I cocked an eyebrow. "Believe me when I say I lost Isaac a bunch of times because he saw Max or Christian and ran after them to say hi."
"Arthur maybe? He could’ve been in the pits?" I answered and took my phone out, already having 3 missed calls from him, I called him back and he picked up immediately.
"I think I have something that belongs to you?" Arthur chuckled and I could hear Liams bright laugh in the background.
"Oh god! Don’t move! I’ll be there in 5 minutes!" I said relieved and hung up.
"Told you so!" Daniel grinned and I hugged him.
"Thank you sooo much!" I said and sprinted to the F3 paddock. As soon as I saw him my heart skipped a beat and relief flooded me.
"Liam!" he looked up at me and I hugged him "I was so scared that I’ve lost you Liam! What did we say? You’re not leaving my side! I wasn’t even looking away for 3 seconds and you ran away! You nearly gave me a heart attack!" he gave me his best puppy eyes "They’re not working! Not this time! Liam, there are so many people! You could’ve gotten seriously hurt! You’re too small, people won’t see you and then they run you over! Or someone took you… no, I don’t even want to think about it. You can’t run away! You understand me?" Liam looked sad, really sad. Was I too harsh? Was I screaming? I looked up at Arthur and some of the other drivers looked a little uncomfortable. Oh god. I was screaming at him?
"Wow, now that was a real dad speech. Look at the guys. They all think they’re grounded!" Arthur chuckled quietly and I rolled my eyes, Liam stood next to me, head hung low "Liam? Why don’t you say goodbye to the guys?" he nodded and walked over to the other F3 drivers.
"Did I scream at him? I-I was just so scared that something happened? Look at him! He’s devastated! Shit! I was too harsh, right?" I rambled but Arthur shook his head.
"You didn’t scream at him, Charles. You were a bit louder and your voice was really serious, he’s not used to that from you, usually you’re all cuddly and sweet to him. But yeah, he will get over it." he said and I nodded as Liam trotted back.
"Bye Arthi." he whispered and Arthur scooped him up.
"See you later, little one. And don’t run away again! Charles was really scared!" he said and Liam nodded, then he sat him down and I carefully stretched my hand out, but Liam ignored it and I sighed.
"Come on, we have to go. Lizzie and Pops will be here any minute." I said and Liam nodded.
We walked in silence back, as I couldn’t stand it any longer and stopped. I crouched down in front of him.
"Liam? I didn’t want to be so harsh, okay? I was just… god Liam I was so scared! I thought I lost you and…" I began but he looked behind me and I turned around, Lizzie and Juergen were waving at us and Liam bolted off. I groaned and got up. Juergen held Liam in his arms and it looked like he was crying. Great. Good job.
"What happened?" Lizzie asked me and I sighed.
"What did he say?" I asked and she shook her head.
"Nothing, but your face? What happened? You look like you’re about to cry? And he is crying?" she answered.
"I umm- I lost him. I swear to god I didn’t even look away for 3 seconds! One moment he sat in my car the next moment he was gone! I looked everywhere, the garage, hospitality, paddock, I asked everyone but he was gone! I was so scared, Lizzie! Then I met Danny Ric and he told me that his nephew always ran away when he saw someone he knew and then I saw that Arthur called me a bunch of times. Liam saw Arthur and followed him. And when I finally found him I was so mad that he ran away like that and I was a bit harsh I guess but Lizzie I swear I had the worst scenarios in my head and I… Lizzie, he hates me now! He doesn’t even look at me!" I let it all out and she just hugged me.
"It’s okay, Charles, he’s safe. It’s okay! I lost him before as well! It happens and I know that when you find him again that the emotions are boiling over a little! I’m sure you weren’t that bad… and he doesn’t hate you! Come on, let’s go check on him." she whispered and I nodded, as she pulled away she smiled at me, then she wiped a stray tear off of my cheek "You’re cute when you’re scared that a 3 year old hates you because you scolded him a little."
"Not funny!" I said and we walked towards Juergen and Liam.
"Bubba? Can you look at me?" Lizzie asked him but he just shook his head, burying his face deeper in Juergens neck.
"What happened?" he whispered when he looked at me and Lizzie just shook her head
"I’ll tell you later, come on, Charles you have to get ready for FP1!" she said and I nodded, walking back to the garage where I prepared myself for the practice. I watched as Liam’s mood got a little better, but he still didn’t look at me and when I walked past them and ruffled his head a little he turned away from me, the sting I felt in my heart catching me off guard. Lizzie just squeezed my shoulder and gave me a kiss on the cheek, not for the first time my insides began to stir and I felt my cheek tingle. I smiled at her before I walked over to my car, put on the balaclava and my helmet and got in.
"Good practice, Charles!" one of the guys said and I nodded as I walked over to Lizzie, Juergen and Liam. I took my helmet and balaclava off and Lizzie took it out of my hand, I kneeled in front of Liam.
"Hey Bubba, are you still mad at me?" I almost whispered, scared of his answer.
"Yup. You yelled at me!" he answered without looking at me.
"He didn’t yell at you! Arthi said he just scolded you for running away!" Juergen said as I looked down "And that was the right thing! Liam, we told you to stay by Charles' side! And still you ran off and Charles searched everywhere for you! The garage, the paddock, the hospitality! He asked everyone he met if they’ve seen you, but you were gone! Do you know how scared he was? And when he found you, he was just so happy to have you back that his emotions boiled a little over because you gave him a heart attack!" Liam looked up a little and I took his hand.
"I’m sorry that I was so harsh! But Pops is right! I thought I lost you or thought you were hurt and it scared me! So I just… I’m sorry, Liam!" I whispered and Liam withdrew his hand from mine, I was feeling sick. But then he hugged me.
"I’m sorry, Charlie. I didn’t want to scare you! I just thought that when you were this mad at me that you… that you didn’t like me anymore…" he sniffled and I hugged him tight.
"How many times do I have to tell you, that there is nothing you could do, that would make me stop loving you, silly boy! I was just scared!" I whispered back and kissed his temple "Please, never run away again!"
"Promise!" Liam said and I smiled.
The summer break and our vacation was exactly what we all needed. Charles was stressed because his season wasn’t going in his favour, Arthur had the same problem, I was stressed because the rumour mill kept going over the last weeks and I was more than often in the middle of it. We sat on the terrace of our beautiful AirBnB on Sardignia, Benji, Liam, Marcus, Arthur and Lisa in the pool. Pascale and Sissy preparing some food in the kitchen.
Mum and Dad to my right, Charles on my left side as we were playing cards. I checked the time every couple of moments.
"They will post the official statement in the next few minutes… why am I so nervous?" I whispered and Charles smiled at me.
"It’s going to be alright! It’s good news!" he said and I sighed
"Have you seen the comments under the post from the testing? There were a lot of negative ones! They don’t want me to be a full time driver as a girl." I mumbled and he just nudged my arm.
"Don’t be so negative! Who cares what some internet trolls say? You’re in F1 next season and you will shut their mouths real quick! So come one! Just be excited for this announcement!" he said and I tried to muster my strength, staring at my phone.
"Whatever happens happens, Lizzie, but we’re all with you!" Dad said and Mum gently stroked my arm.
"Yeah, I guess now it’s just time to wait for the announcement and then it is what it is." I said as my screen lit up "Here we go!"
Tumblr media
"Lizzie?" Charles gently woke me up and I groaned, pulling the sheets over my head "Come on! Get up!"
"I don’t want to!" I grumbled.
"We knew that some idiots would react like this! But since when do we care what internet trolls say?" he asked and pulled the sheets away "Come on! We’re having a nice holiday! Don’t let these idiots spoil your mood! You ladies have an amazing day planned out!"
"As long as it doesn’t contain alcohol I’m not leaving!" I whispered.
"You’re a pro athlete! Don’t say that in public!" he chuckled and pulled me up. He used a little too much force and I crashed right into him. I looked at him, watched as his gaze lingered on my lips and I felt hot.
"Yeah, yeah whatever!" I cleared my throat and Charles blinked.
The backlash was extreme. The last week went by with a daily string of new misogynistic and sexist comments under every news article, post, video or whatever that was about me joining the grid next year. I said to myself I won’t let it get to my head. But it did. It stung. It hurt. I hated it. I expected some people to have their doubts and to be negative, but the downpour of hate? I wasn’t expecting it.
"I know it’s hard, and although I don’t know how hard it is and how it feels to be treated like this just because you’re a girl… I stand with you! We all do! Don’t let these idiots bring you down! You deserve this spot. End of the story! And now please, please get your cute ass out of bed, the ladies are waiting. They planned a spa day! Cocktails, massages, face masks… how does that sound?" Charles tried to cheer me up and it worked, a little, even though I could feel myself blushing.
"Great, let's do something super girly after I’ve been judged for being a girl!" I pouted and Charles laughed, gently pulling me out of bed.
"Fighting fire with fire! And now go!"
Charles POV:
"If the ladies are having a spa day, what are we doing then?" asked Lorenzo and I shrugged.
"I mean we could take the jet skis for a ride? Windsurfing?" I replied but Arthur just sighed.
"Dude, that’s what we’re doing every day! Let’s have a real men's day!" he said and I nodded.
"I’m a man, too! I wanna come with you!" Liam chirped in and looked at me with his big puppy eyes. I picked him up and sat him in my lap where he leaned his back against my chest.
"Of course you’re coming as well, big man!" I said and began to tickle him and he tried to squirm away giggling.
"Me too!" shouted Benji and jumped on his dads back.
"We’re all going! Because we’re all men!" Juergen said and we laughed.
"So, Pops, as you’re the big man here, what did you do with your mates, back in the day?" Marcus asked and I looked at Juergen who thought for a moment.
"Well when I was your age, I was still playing football, so our weekends were filled with matches, tournaments and lots and lots of B-E-E-R." he shrugged and then spelled the last word.
"Pops! I know you said beer!" Liam said, rolling his eyes and I laughed.
"You’re too smart, Bubba!" I chuckled and Liam smiled.
"Maybe not lots and lots of beer with the kiddos around." Lorenzo said and Juergen nodded.
"We also went fishing? When we were in Spain a mate of ours knew someone with a boat and we drove out, trying to catch a fish or two and then in the evening we ate 'em." he said and scratched his chin.
"We have a boat? We only need fishing stuff?" Arthur said and Marcus and Lorenzo laughed.
"Fishing stuff? You mean fishing gear?" Lorenzo laughed and Arthur just rolled his eyes.
"Whatever it’s called we need it!" he shrugged and Marcus held up his phone.
"There’s a store just a couple of streets from here." he said and I got up, throwing Liam over my shoulder and made him giggle even more.
"Let’s get fishing stuff." I said and looked at Arthur.
"Ha-ha. Very funny." he grumbled but Juergen just ruffled his hair and pushed him towards the door.
"Come on, little Arthi, don’t be sour." he said and Arthur laughed.
"What can I get you gentleman?" the salesman asked us and Liam on my shoulders chirped "FISHING STUFF!" which made me laugh and Arthur groaned, although he was smiling.
"Fishing gear, I don’t know fishing rods, bait, fishing nets, fishing leash? I don’t know… basically everything." Lorenzo explained and the man looked at us a little confused.
"We’re having a men’s only day!" Benji said.
"And we’re going fishing! With lots of beer!" Liam said and I pinched his calf "Ouch! Why did you do that!" he tugged a little at my hair and leaned forwards so he could look at me.
"You’re a little too young to tell the people you’re having a beer, Bubba!" I chuckled and he just rolled his eyes "If you keep doing that, they will get stuck."
"They won’t!" he said and laughed.
While we had our little talk the salesman already brought some fishing gear and put it on the counter, explaining to Lorenzo, Juergen and Marcus how it all worked while Arthur was giving Benji a piggyback ride.
Half an hour later we loaded everything into the boat, filled the fridges with some cold beverages and food and started our trip. The salesman gave us some coordinates for a quiet bay, with good chances to catch something but nice for a little swim.
"He was right. It’s nice and we’re the only ones!" Marcus said and I agreed.
"Okay, then I’d say let’s fish?" I said and Juergen laughed.
"Sure, let’s fish!" he chuckled.
10 Minutes later all 4 fishing rods were in the water including 2 fishing lines for the boys.
"Alright, done. And now?" Arthur said and looked at us.
"Now we wait!" he popped open a beer and leaned back in his seat.
Lorenzo and Marcus grabbed a beer as well and sat back down. I watched as the boys played with their fishing lines.
Arthur stared intently at the fishing rods.
"How long does it take? I mean to catch a fish?" he asked after a while and I just shrugged my shoulders.
"I don’t know? Some time?" I answered and watched Liam and Benji looking excited in the water.
"What’s going on, boys?" I asked and sat down next to them.
"Look Charlie! There are fish everywhere! They will bite into our bait any moment!" Benji said and I followed his gaze.
"You’re right! That’s awesome!" I said and we watched the fish swim around the fishing lines and the bait, but not biting.
"It’s boring…" Liam whispered after a long while of us staring at the fish and Benji nodded.
"Yeah! I thought they would bite faster!" he mumbled and I laughed.
"I guess you have to be really patient when fishing!" I got up and walked over to Arthur, still staring at the fishing rods "So? Any luck yet?"
"We’re now here for almost an hour and nothing happened!" he groaned and I patted his shoulder and sat down next to Marcus.
"We sent the ladies a picture of us with the whole fishing gear, saying they should prepare some salads because we will bring fish for the barbecue tonight!" he laughed and Lorenzo nodded.
"If we have luck we catch one and have to share that one then!" Lorenzo chuckled and Juergen downed his beer.
"Now I know why we had loads of beer while fishing… it’s boring!" he said and I laughed.
"Yeah well… it’s something different I guess…" I shrugged my shoulders as the boys started to scream excitedly.
"We’ve got one! Help us! He’s strong!" Benji yelled and we jumped up looking at him and Liam holding onto the fishing line. Marcus grabbed the fishing line and pulled it gently in.
"Yeah, that one is strong!" he exclaimed and struggled a little with holding the line.
"Here’s one as well!" Arthur exclaimed and Juergen walked up to him.
"Oh! Look, both of these fishing rods!" Juergen said and Lorenzo helped out.
"Damn, they’re strong!" Arthur said as they tried to pull in the line.
"Yeah! What are these? Sharks?" Lorenzo said and I chuckled.
"Should I grab the net?" I asked and they all nodded.
"Watch out! It will escape!" Lorenzo shouted as the line from the rod Arthur and Juergen were working on abruptly got pulled away.
It was a constant shouting and pulling and cursing the next few minutes, with Marcus and the boys trying their best to get their line in, Arthur and Juergen still struggling and Lorenzo trying his best to not let go of his fishing rod. I stood in between them, holding up the nets, waiting to catch the fish.
"Why isn’t it moving anymore? There is just resistance, but no pull!" Juergen said and Lorenzo nodded.
"Yeah same." he answered and Marcus agreed.
"Are these smart fish and they have a plan to get out of this?" Arthur asked and I laughed.
"Absolutely!" I said and he glared at me.
"Guys… umm… yeah, so much for catching fish!" Lorenzo pulled his line back in, entangled with a lot of other fishing lines. One leading to Juergen and Arthur and one to Marcus and the two little boys.
"You’ve got to be kidding me!" I laughed and after a short moment of disappointment we all laughed together.
"There’s a fish market in the harbour! I’d say we buy some fish there and we say that we were the ones catching them!" Juergen suggested, scratching his chin.
"Sounds good to me!" I said and the rest of the guys agreed.
"I guess we’re no fishermen then!" Lorenzo said and we laughed.
"Certainly not!" Marcus said.
"Let’s get in the water, have some fun before we return, I’d say!" and Juergen nodded.
"Yeah, but we should get the other fishing lines in, not that we catch ourselves!" he said.
"Good idea!" Arthur said and pulled the one line in "Ok, here we have the same problem. These two are also entangled."
Marcus walked up to him and started to pull in the line.
"Nope, that one is easy going…" he said and Arthur looked excited in the water.
"Guys! It’s a fish! A real fish! We caught a fish!" he shouted and we waited for him to pull it in "It’s huge! I can feel it!"
As the so-called huge fish came into view we laughed.
"That’s like a sardine!" Lorenzo said.
"I need 10 of them!" I said.
We released the fish back into the ocean and had some fun snorkeling and swimming.
"And you caught all that fish? That’s impressive!" Marina said as she and Maman looked into the cooling box.
"Yeah! First time and you’re already able to gut the fish and debone it! You guys are real fishermen!" Maman laughed and we looked at us, waiting for someone to come up with an explanation.
"Of course we didn’t do that! We asked a guy at the harbour to help us! And when he saw that we were complete tools, he did it for us!" Juergen said and we nodded agreeing.
"What a nice man!" Lisa said.
"Super nice of him!" Lizzie smiled although I knew that smile, something was off "What was his name?"
"Anthoine!"
"Henry!”
"Pierre!"
"Paul!"
We looked at each other.
"You see how much fish that is? We had help from a whole bunch of guys!" Lorenzo said and Lizzie chuckled, then she scrolled through her phone and laid it on the counter in front of us, showing pictures of us buying the fish in the harbour.
"Your fans are everywhere, Charlie bear!" Lizzie chuckled.
"Oh boys… you are some fishermen!"
"Let’s cook this perfectly bought fish!"
The moment I entered the paddock on Saturday morning in Zandvoort people were going crazy. Fans, reporters, photographers were screaming my name, asking for statements but I just wanted to get inside with Liam. He looked scared by the mass of people and I cursed myself for not coming in earlier together with Charles. Then we would’ve had securities but just us alone? No securities were stepping in of course.
"Lizzie? Hey! Lizzie!" I heard someone scream my name from the right and looked. I spotted Max waving at me and he talked to 2 security guys who helped Liam and me out of the sea of people.
"Max! Hi! Thank you so much!" I said and hugged him.
"That looked scary!" he said and looked down at Liam "And you must be Liam! Charles told me a lot about you!"
"Hi…" Liam said a little shyly and Max chuckled.
"Congrats, Lizzie! Next season you’re one of us! Finally!" he said as we kept on walking.
"Yup, it still feels unreal… I mean I know it’s happening, but all of the negativity in the last weeks? Doesn’t make it easier…" I said and he nodded.
"Yeah, I’ve seen some of the stuff they were saying… unfortunately a lot of RedBull fans were amongst those who were writing the worst things… I’m really sorry!" Max said sincerely and I sighed.
"Thanks Max, but don’t worry! I’ll get through it! You don’t have to be sorry! It’s not you who’s writing that stuff!" I said and he shrugged his shoulders.
"It still sucks! I raced against you long enough to know that you’re tough as hell and will be, in the right car, a big threat to all of us!" he looked at me and grinned.
"They will see, I’ll show them that I deserve my seat!" I said, determined.
"I expected nothing less from you!" he chuckled "I gotta go now, but we’ll catch up later?"
"Sure! You wanna take a picture with Max before he leaves? He’s going to be the world champion this season… maybe…" I said and Max laughed as Liam walked up to him.
Tumblr media
The rest of the weekend was filled with lots and lots of people trying to get a grasp on me but I managed to dodge them mostly. Only after the race I bumped into Ralf Schumacher and the Sky Germany crew and as they all congratulated me, I agreed to a little interview.
"So, Lizzie, it’s great to have you here in Zandvoort! A track where you will be driving next season as well. How do you watch the races now that you know you will race alongside the others next season?" Peter Hardenacke asked.
"Thanks for having me! Well of course now I watch the races more intently! Look how the drivers tackle the tracks at specific corners. I just try to grasp and absorb as much as possible. And maybe it will help. We’ll see, I guess." I answered.
"You’re joining Audi, but are still a common guest in the Ferrari garage, aren’t the guys at Ferrari a bit worried?" Ralf joked and I laughed.
"Well yeah, kinda. I’m only allowed far away from the cars, to not spy on them! No, I'm just kidding. It wouldn’t help a lot to spy on the current car, would it now?" I said laughing.
"That was a dig against the current car, wasn’t it!" Peter laughed.
"No! I mean that’s certainly not the car I’m competing with next season. So it would be useless to spy a bit!" I said and winked at him.
"Ahhh, yeah sure! How is everything else going? We all know that after last June there were some serious concerns about your health. Now we know you’ll be on the grid next year, how do you prepare?" Ralf asked and I thought for a moment.
"What happened last year, the accident, it was tough. And the recovery was even tougher because it’s not just your body that needs to be back in shape, also your mindset. So yeah I trained a lot over the last year. Physically but also mentally. And I just continue like this. Strengthen my body, my mind. Doing lots and lots of simulator work. Developing the car. We only have some more weeks until we have to present the FIA our final car. And yeah, overall it’s busy but I’m more than happy about it." I said.
"We wish you all the best and are really excited to have you on the grid next year!" Peter said.
"Absolutely! You’re a role model for every girl out there but also for every person who had a setback, you showed strength and resilience and that if you work hard enough everything is possible! I’m really looking forward to see you on track!" Ralf said.
"Thank you guys! Really! I’m looking forward to some more chats next season!" I smiled at them and handed my microphone over, with a final wave I left.
"Lizzie! Wait up!" I turned around, George Russell walking up to me.
"Hey George!" I said and hugged him "Long time no see!"
"It’s good to see you, Lizzie! Good to see that you finally got a seat!" he said and I smiled.
"Thanks George! I really appreciate it! And I guess I can congratulate you, too? I mean it’s not official yet, but you know, of course I’ve been told who they want as my teammate …" I chuckled a little and George blushed.
"Yeah. I think they will announce it tomorrow. Isn’t it crazy? We all race next year against each other? The only one missing is Alex." he said, sounding a little sad in the end.
"Yeah, Red Bull did him dirty… just like Pierre before… but that’s Red Bull, right? They want the best line up they can get, no matter what." I sighed and he nodded, looking behind me, as someone covered my eyes from behind.
"Who am I?" a voice asked, but I knew that the voice didn’t belong to the hands.
"You? Lando… the hands? Charlie bear!" I said and heard a loud groan paired with a shrill laughter.
"Charlie bear?! CHARLIE BEAR?" Lando cackled and I turned around, looking at a bend down Lando and a slightly red Charles.
"Why would you say that? Why, ma belle?" he grumbled and George laughed.
"Oh how cute! We have Charlie bear and ma belle next year on track! Adorable!" he said and Lando gained a bit of his composure back.
"This will be fun! Really! Lizzie, congrats for joining the circus next season! You deserve that seat more than anyone else!" Lando said and looked at me.
"Thanks Lando!" I smiled at him.
"Are you guys also going with Max? He rented a club in Amsterdam, to celebrate the first Dutch GP since? I don’t know since when! I guess now we’re also celebrating his win!" Lando said and Charles nodded.
"We’re in!" he said and smiled at me.
"But not for too long, you promised Liam something!" I reminded him and he smiled.
"I know, I know!" he said.
"Then we’ll see you guys later on!" George said and we waved them off.
We left the track, driving straight to our hotel in Amsterdam.
"So, I’ve seen you were talking with Sky Germany… the people have a lot to say about it." Charles said as I picked out an outfit.
"Yeah? I don’t care… I don’t care anymore. I’ve heard it over this weekend so often! From current drivers, former drivers, experts, journalists, some fans. They say I deserve my seat. I will focus from now on on the positive feedback and fuck the haters and their negativity!" I looked at him and he smiled.
"Well, this time it’s mostly positive! And you’re right! Haters gonna hate…" he began.
"… and potatoes gonna potate!" I finished his sentence and we laughed.
"I’m proud of you, ma belle! The last year was hard and I know that me and my complete obliviousness regarding Camille wasn’t really helpful, but despite everything that was thrown your way, look at where you are now! You’re a Formula 1 driver for Audi, you will start your first season next year, so many people out there are praising you, you look smoking hot and… and you have a family and friends that love you forever!" Charles said and I smiled at him.
"Thanks, Charlie! I know without you I wouldn’t be here tonight… without any of you… but you’re right. We’ve come so far together! Next year will be freaking amazing!" I said and he nodded.
"Ready to party?" Charles asked.
"I was born ready!"

Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the final throes of summer the trees lose that brilliant, neon green and the waves crash to shore just a little harder than they did last week. It’s a small change, yet I see it every year as I stand on the shore, that breeze that blows the marram grasses into my bare legs is just a touch colder than usual, the days a little shorter, a feeling of change in the air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I watch a mother call her kids in from the sea with a broad wave of her arm, “We’re packing up the caravan,” she’s calling out, “Come and help your dad put the cases in the car, won’t you?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Within sight of me, Liam wipes the counter down at the surf shack, and there is no queue today for ice cream, and soon it’ll be just the locals left, going about their year in this village of boarded up houses. He sees me and waves enthusiastically, and I lift a limp hand in response.
“You off soon?” He shouts, and I shrug.
“Tomorrow.”
“Ah, well sure I might see you around before you go. I’ll be here.”
I turn back to face the shore. Yeah. He’s always here. I wonder what it’s like for him when the summer is over, like, what does Liam do in the winter? Does he still go surfing? Does he still stand there smiling at the Surf Shack window, through rain and storms, smiling out to sea and waiting for customers like some kind of ancient ghost doomed to act out this routine until the end of time? How is it that he is fifteen and it feels like he’s been there for centuries.
Tumblr media
Shane Healy comes down the sandy path from the village and my stomach clenches. He is not smiling, and he’s walking towards me with a particular sort of impatient purpose that makes me feel like the most burdensome fool to ever exist. Who knows what I interrupted by asking him to come here, but I have a feeling he’s about to tell me.
Tumblr media
“Here, man,” he huffs, “We were packing the bags to go home, what is it?”
I hesitate, aware of my hands sunken into pockets, thinking perhaps I should take them out and be prepared for any potential violence. “Um,” I say, “I thought that you and I should talk.”
“Oh yeah?” He has a glint in his eye. Is it a murderous glint? I can’t decide.
Tumblr media
“I was talking to Jen about you guys, you know, not inviting me to hang out at your place the other night and I was just wondering-”
“Yeah, obviously. Why would I invite you over?”
“...Because we’re meant to be friends, I don’t know, why else would you-”
Tumblr media
“Man, look, I don’t know if you think I’m stupid or something, but obviously I found out what you’ve been saying about Kelly, and I don’t really think it’s a good idea for you to be in the same room as her, she’d just get mad or something, I don’t know.”
“Kelly?” I splutter. “What did I ever say about Kelly?”
Tumblr media
“I get pissed off at her, right? She’s annoying, but she’s my sister, and only I’m allowed to say things about her, not you. I dunno, I just thought you’d have a bit more cop-on, a bit more compassion or something, like, she’s been…” He hesitates, like the next thought is disturbing, “.... fairly upset about it, to be honest.”
Tumblr media
I search all over his face for some sign that he’s pranking me, but he isn’t. His jaw is set and his brow is furrowed. “Shane, honestly, I don’t even know what I said. I don’t think that I ever said anything about her.”
“Okay but it actually has to have been you.”
“What? Why? What was said?”
Tumblr media
“Man, come on, I know you’re like this, I know you just say and do shit without really thinking about it, and you’re an annoying bastard about it and usually it’s fine, but I’m just mad that you targeted my little sister. It’s not on.”
My heart is drumming a staccato beat inside my chest, “Shane, what the hell! I didn't say anything, I mean, maybe I did and I can’t remember. What-”
Tumblr media
“That nobody wants to hang out with her, that she’s a loser and that our mam has to force people to be friends with her,” He scowls, “All the teenagers at the caravan park heard about it and they’re all ripping the piss, saying that she needs mammy’s to hold her hand.”
“That wasn’t me. I’d never say that.”
“Well we figured out that it must have been, alright? Because mam said that she asked you, you specifically, to invite Kelly to hang out because she was worried she was feeling a bit lonely.”
Tumblr media
The idea that Shane’s mam thinks I spread these rumours makes me queasy. I remember that night. We were out on the dunes, we ran out of beer, I went back to the Healy’s mobile home to sneak more out, and Clóda came-
Clóda.
“No - listen, I swear it wasn’t me,” I begin, but he’s already finished and doesn’t really care about what else I have to say. He’s backing away.
Tumblr media
“Whatever, Jude. If this is what you asked me here to talk about then I have things to be at, so,” he gives me a nod as I splutter in protest, but he just walks away with a curt wave, “I’ve to pack, so, see you next summer, or whatever.”
Tumblr media
“Shane, wait! Shane, man, c’mon!” He doesn’t turn around. “Fuck sake,” I mutter and I grab my phone from my pocket. I punch out a quick text to Clóda.
Tumblr media
Meet me in the park when you’re finished work.
Tumblr media
I stalk off in the other direction.

Hey, can you please recommend any fics where one of the boys plays matchmaker for Harry and Louis? Thx
Hi, anon! Here are some fics that fit what you're looking for!
Captain Cupid by @2tiedships2
“Right,” Niall started, finally getting the opportunity to unleash his horrible plan. “Well, as you both know, I’m an excellent matchmaker. A human Cupid. The best of the best at finding one's mate. And I’ve decided it’s time to make money doing it.”
“Oh, God no,” Louis groaned, picking up his empty plate and placing it in the sink. He needed to escape as quickly as possible.
Or the one where Niall enlists his friends to help start a speed dating side hustle. Things don't go as planned... or maybe they do?
I Built This Bed For Two (I Built This Bed For Me and You) by felissadee
“So, about the video,” he begins and Harry crosses his arms, eyeing him suspiciously. “What?” he asks, squinting slightly as he studies Niall. “It’s called, er…” he trails off, mumbling something so quickly and quietly that Harry has no hope of catching it. “Wanna try again, Ni?” he asks, quirking an eyebrow. “It’s called…ExesCuddleAgainForTheFirstTimeInYears.”
OR Harry and Louis broke up after uni and haven't seen each other since—until they're roped into doing a Buzzfeed video together. Featuring awkward cuddling and a reunion that just needed a kick in the arse, gleefully provided by Niall.
baby, in the summertime by EmmyLouWho
“Well you’ve got to do something,” Liam argues. “It’s not like your perfect guy is just going to suddenly appear right in front of you.”
“Central to Tommo,” his radio crackles. “There’s a guy who looks like he might be getting into trouble directly in front of the tower.”
Louis and Liam both immediately turn to their left, and squint out into the surf. After scanning the waves for a few seconds, Louis spots a guy bobbing around quite a way away from the shore.
You've Been Lonely Too Long by amory
Harry has everything someone would need to make them happy: money, fame, a stunningly attractive albeit fake girlfriend, a supportive family, good friends, and a cat. But maybe he isn't very happy.
Louis sleeps around and no, he definitely does not have a problem admitting to that thank you very much, but maybe he's just a little tired of waking up alone in the morning with only a bowl of instant macaroni and cheese to comfort him.
Maybe letting Zayn play matchmaker wouldn't be such a bad thing

Royal Chambers, Cordonian Palace
It was an early Tuesday morning and Riley was taking full advantage of the terrace overlooking the gardens. Sipping her coffee, she relished her quiet time.
It’s Valentine’s Day.
...and today, her focus will be on her family.
Starting with baking home-made chocolate chip cookies that were now cooling on the counter. Promising to help Ellie with her Valentine gift for her father, she made one of the cookies into a giant heart for her to create and decorate her gift for Liam. The royal kitchen prepared 3 colors of royal icing for the princess to help her complete her decorating project.
For Liam, Riley has a surprise romantic dinner planned on the royal yacht tonight. A surf and turf feast with all his favorite dishes, prepared by the chef, cruising under the moonlight.
They had been planning a trip to Monterisso since finding out about the possible missing sister/fugitive, ‘Lena.’ The timing could not be more perfect for sailing, rather than flying to the island. Leo was already there with Amalas; Leo being the King’s representative involved with the search led by Interpol.
“Mm mm... what have we got here?” The sound of Liam’s deep groan caught her attention.
Riley turned to look inside the kitchen and saw him take a bite into a cookie.
“Hey, you,” she walked into the kitchen, smiling.
“Is this for me?” He grinned, staring at the huge heart she made.
“Yes! Yes, it is.” Riley smiled wide at his expression. Shaking her head, “it is part of Ellie’s Valentine gift for you. Do not touch, not yet!”
“Ellie wants to surprise you at lunch after your meeting by personally delivering it to you in your study.”
“This is my favorite kind of cookie," he said, reaching to grab another before turning back to her. “I’ll take care of these. You go finish your breakfast.”
“Ha, ha, your majesty,” Riley chuckled. Don’t take too many cookies back to your study with you.”
“Oh, and love.... bonne saint valentin a l’amour de ma vie.” Liam lifted her hand to kiss and then twirled her around. Riley reached up and wrapped her arms around his neck, and whispered, “buon san valentino all’amore della mia vita,” followed by a deep kiss.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Drake!” Delaney rolled underneath the bed sheets to her side to face her boyfriend coming out of the bathroom after his shower. His eyes were closed, and she smiled at how cute he looked with his wet hair sticking up all over his head and a towel wrapped around his waist. He opened his eyes and gave her a grin.
Walking to the bed, he bent down to whisper, “hey baby,” wrapping his arms around her and kissing her lips. Delaney smiled up at him as she laid there feeling safe and secure with the man she loved.
“I love you,” she told him as he kissed her again.
Drake sighed happily, “I love you too. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
He pulled himself away from her and headed towards the closet.
“Wait, what are you doing?” Delaney asked playfully as she watched him pull out his boxers from the drawer.
“Getting dressed....”
“Well, I thought that since you came out of the shower wearing nothing but your towel,” Delaney replied teasingly.
Drake smiled back at her as he sat down on the bed next to her. He reached under the sheet to pull her bottom close to him. “And how do you know I wasn’t wearing anything?”
Delaney blushed. “Umm...well...” She looked away, embarrassed.
“Well, what?” he asked again, playing along with her.
“Well, you know I didn’t see much of you last night.”
Drake laughed. “I’m sure there was plenty to see.”
He looked down at Delaney's expression and she did not look happy. “Are you flirting or starting a fight?”
“A little bit of both?” Delaney replied frustrated.
“Drake, it's the best answer I can give you right now.
It is Valentine's Day! I thought you could stay home today with me, but instead you are going out.”
“Baby, after the council meeting, I am coming right back here with your Valentine gift.” Drake replied with a grin.

“Are you ready, princess?” Riley asked Ellie as they walked hand in hand down the hallway to deliver Liam’s valentine gift.
As they approached his door, the royal guards bowed.
Ellie raised her hand and tapped. When she heard her father's voice say, “come in,” a royal guard opened the door for Ellie and Riley.
“Daddy!” Ellie rushed in and went around his desk. Liam picked her up and placed her on his knee.
“Well, hello princess,” he said, smiling at her.
“Oh Daddy, Happy Vawindines Day! I brought you a present.” Ellie handed him the giant heart-shaped cookie she had personally decorated.
Liam kissed her cheek, “Happy Valentine’s Day, my little love. Thank you so much, will you help me eat it?”
Ellie nodded excitedly as he placed the giant cookie on his desk.
Riley was watching the exchange between the two of them as she sat down on the sofa.
Liam looked over at Riley and winked.
“Princess, I have Valentine's Day presents for you and mommy, too.”
Her eyes lit up and she clapped her hands.
“Tonight, after your lesson, we are going on a boat. That is where I put them. And guess where we are going on that boat?”
Ellie furrowed her brows, and asked, “where, Daddy?”
“To visit Micaela in Monterisso.”

Royal Yacht, enroute to Monterisso
After getting Ellie settled into her bed for the night, Riley changed into her evening cocktail dress.
As the servers placed platters of crab legs, scallops, and calamari on the table, the chef set down individual plates of steak and lobster for each.
The music played softly in her ears as she walked out onto the deck after dinner. Standing there, she felt like she was floating on air. A smile spread across her face when she felt Liam’s hand gently stroke her bare back.
“You look so beautiful tonight, my Queen,” he whispered, as he leaned forward for a kiss.
“Thank you,” Riley deepened the kiss.
“Come dance with me,” he said, taking her hand.
As they moved effortlessly to the music, Delaney watched from the window, sitting at the dining table inside. It was the most romantic setting she had ever seen.
“What are you thinking about?” Drake asked her, but he was fairly sure he already knew.
“It must be hard being married to a King. But Riley makes it look so easy.”
“Well, Riley is an incredibly unique woman.” Drake said in reverence.
Delaney raised an eyebrow, waiting for Drake to continue.
Riley noticed Delaney watching them, as the song ended.
“Let us join Drake and Delaney inside, we still have dessert to eat.” Riley smiled as Liam kissed her hand.
“After you, love,” Liam gently turned Riley to go inside.
As Liam went inside to sit down at the dining table, Riley met with the chef to begin dessert service.
“Delaney, I hope you are enjoying yourself.” Liam enquired.
“I am. I have never been on a yacht before.”
“Li, this is a 5-star resort on water. Thank you for including Delaney and I on this cruise.”
“Oh yes, especially on Valentine’s Day,” Delaney exclaims.
Riley smiled. “No problem, we are happy you could join us.”
As the servers set their desserts in front of them, Liam squeezed Riley’s hand. “My love, you always indulge me.”
Delaney took her first bite of the baklava, “this is delicious.”
Drake grins at Liam and lifts his glass to propose a toast.
“To great food and good friends.”

As the evening progressed, Liam and Drake moved to the outside deck to discuss the game plan on the search for Lena.
While Riley and Delaney went to the lounge area of the yacht.
Both women being American, shared that commonality, but moreover, Riley wanted Delaney to feel comfortable in Cordonia. Since Liam and Drake are best friends, Delaney will be included with Royal court functions that Drake attends.
“So, how did you meet Drake?” Riley asked, as she sipped her infused sparkling water.
“We were in college together, about 10 years ago, at the University of Houston. I really liked him, so when he left to come back here, I tried to stay in contact, but I lost touch with him.” Delaney explained.
“That must have been difficult for you. How did you eventually find him?” Riley asked.
“I went to student services and found his forwarding address information. I kept trying to get in contact with him hoping he would remember me. He finally called me one day and it turned out that we reconnected after all those years.” Delaney sighed.
“Yes, you were here at Halloween last Fall.” Riley smiled.
Delaney grinned, “yes.... he was so sweet!”
“Now, let’s talk about you. Drake told me that you had some very bad experiences when you came to Cordonia.
Riley laughed, “where do I begin?”
Drake murmured to Liam, “should I be worried?” Liam replied, “man, you are so screwed.” His laugh bellowed and Riley looked up to him with a smirk, hearing his comment.
As Liam and Drake walked inside the yacht, they both took notice of the blossoming friendship of Riley and Delaney.
