Hey so with the state of the UK atm, I’m thinking it’s wise to start preparing to go ultra stealth as a trans person - my question is how? I’m in the process of getting my passport gender updated, I can likely do other photo ids next. But I’m wary of a gender recognition certificate if it then creates a database of who is trans - how could I make it so my past sex cannot be discovered and that I can ask the hormones, testosterone in this case, without getting outed or criminalised? I feel like we’re on the verge of something very bad. I am asking both for now, unwilling to directly break laws (because of the consequence), and for the future where breaking laws may become necessary.

I’m not the best person to ask about this. I am non-binary but I tend to present with my AGAB, largely out of an effort to stay safe. Right now, though, as far as I’m aware, it is illegal for most bodies to inquire about your sex outside of the information provided to it, unless it is of critical relevance; it very rarely is. It goes without saying that with the current political landscape of the UK, we could see this change.

There are resources online and the government does make public its policy on the treatment of trans people. Any significant changes will (or should) be in the news, but if you have a specific concern for now, it might be worth looking it up online. I’m sure many are hoping that the oncoming labour majority will at least not curtail trans rights, even if it isn’t willing to restore them.

I will say this; it is scary to think about breaking the law to access HRT, but the market for it exists for a reason. If they do clamp down on access to HRT full stop, the black market can (and does) provide, at relatively low risk (as of now). There’s a bunch of resources on this website alone about black market HRT; much of it is accessible in the UK. It is also worth noting that conservative reform in England is often not followed or backed by the local governments of Wales and particularly Scotland. For now, we have to keep protesting, fighting, staying informed and protecting our trans siblings.
