wish you the best (mason m.)
Tumblr media
summary : a mutual friend's wedding brings two past lovers together again.
word count : 1,054
a/n : highly suggest listening to wish you the best by lewis capaldi, *chef's kiss*
i miss knowing what you're thinking
and hearing how your day has been
do you think you could tell me everything, darling
but leave out every part about him?
he had caught sight of you first.
his coffee-colored orbs analyzed every small detail of you, attempting to discover anything that had been reconstructed since the last time the two of you spoke.
seeing you for the first time in ten months, a million questions arose within him but there was only one he gravely needed an answer to.
right now you're probably by the ocean
while i'm still out here in the rain
with every day that passes, passes with focus
it's like glasgow gets farther from l.a
in the wake of the break-up with mason, you needed to get out of england.
you needed to be able to breathe.
you disclosed to a mutual friend of yours that you settled into a home neighboring the sea, the ocean being a safe haven for you ever since you were young.
it was only fitting to be drawn back to it after you left mason standing out in the rain.
but, oh, my love
i wanna say, "i miss the green in your eyes"
and when i said we could be friends, guess i lied
i wanna say, "i wish that you never left"
oh, but i said, "i only wish you the best"
gravitating to where you stood alone in the ballroom, mason could hear his heart rate increase.
he was nervous, nonetheless.
he wanted to confine into you how much he had missed you.
he wanted to confess to you that he had lied when he meekly suggested that the two of you could remain friends during the aftermath of that heart-rending fight out in the rain.
mason wished you never left.
he wished he never wished you the best.
i wanna say, "without you, everything's wrong"
qnd you were everything i need all along
i wanna say, "i wish that you never left"
ohh, but instead, "i only wish you the best”
mason by no means blamed you for anything that was going wrong in his life right now, however he did feel as if you caused the domino effect when you walked away from him.
his words that night were rooted in anger when he shrieked that he didn’t need you, that he was better off without you and all the baggage that came along with.
he wanted to apologize.
but then his long strides turned into small footsteps when he noticed the male individual approach you, handing you a glass of champagne as you gave him a delicate smile, thanking him.
mason felt like the wind had been knocked out of him watching the interaction.
well i can't help but notice
you seem happier than ever now
and i guess i should tell you that i'm sorry
it seems i was the problem somehow
he was aware that he should’ve stopped staring, that for the sake of his heart he needed to rip his focus away from the scene.
but you looked happier.
your smile reached your eyes now, showcasing your warm smile as you laughed at a joke your male companion cracked.
the urge to apologize only grew deeper as mason pondered on the realization that he had been the problem.
he was the one barely home.
he was the one who hadn't defended you.
he was the one who initially told you to leave.
maybe i only brought you down
you weren’t meant for the life that mason had pursued.
you didn’t enjoy all the glitz and glamor that came along with being a footballer’s girlfriend, you wanted it comfortable but mason’s life had only brought pain.
your confidence being ripped apart daily by fans critiquing every detail about and harassing you on the fact that you didn’t deserve him. somewhere along the way you started to believe them, you let these strangers point a finger in your face and tell you you're no good.
due to your lack of defense and mason's lack of empathy regarding the situation, caused for turmoil to subside in your relationship.
but, oh, my love
i wanna say, "i miss the green in your eyes"
and when i said we could be friends, guess i lied
i wanna say, "i wish that you never left"
oh, but i said, "i only wish you the best"
when he stopped in the middle of the ballroom is when you noticed him, standing only five feet away from you.
you noticed how his shoulders had become broader by how his suit was hugging his new found muscles.
you noticed how his hair had grown out from his spring of the moment buzzcut since the last time you saw him.
you noticed how since the moment you two had gained eye contact, neither of you have looked away.
you missed mason, you missed everything about him and more.
when he suggested that the two of you would remain friends, something in you had scattered.
you wanted him to fight for you, you wanted him to comfort you and tell you that he didn’t mean those nasty words he said.
you wanted him to scope down and rescue you
but he hadn’t and even without the grand gesture of trying to win you back
you wish you hadn’t left.
wish i could say it's something i really need
but i want you happy whether not it's with me
i wanna say, "i wish that you never left"
oh, but instead, "i only wish you the best"
in that moment mason realized he needed to let you go.
you were happy and it wasn’t with him.
giving you a small nod of acknowledgement, he raised his hand and softly waved at you, flashing you a timid smile as the male at your side tried to regain your attention.
turning around, mason walked out onto the patio as he tried to regain composure.
i wanna say, "without you, everything's wrong"
and you were everything i need all along
i wanna say, "i wish that you never left"
oh, but instead, "i only wish you the best"
you had followed him out there.
the sight before your eyes made your heart contract tightly.
mason had his head in his hands as he tried to conceal his quiet sobs, lifting his head as he used the back of his hand to wipe off the tears that found home onto his cheeks.
staring up at you with glossy eyes, he couldn't help how his bottom lip quivered. you being there here only reminded him of how alone he felt, that how once he was on top of the world and now the world was on top of him.
taking the seat next to him, you timorously intertwined your hand through his, brushing your thumb back and forth against his palm.
“i wish i never left.”

continue talking ab teen titans & music after reblogging that post:
- starfire is the biggest beyoncé RENAISSANCE fan ever and her favourite song is ALIEN SUPERSTAR (get it?) and also CUFF IT
- raven is the dedicated concert ticket buyer because although she absolutely despises the hassle of buying them and also attending she somehow has a natural gift for purchasing them all of them amazing seats and they always manage to get tix before their sold out when raven does it (this applies to anything that involves buying tickets cy and beast boy will forcibly beg raven to use their money to buy tickets for all sorts of events because they always screw it up)
- daily arguments about who controls the radio when the titans are in the car (cyborg usually wins because he’s always driving)
- the titans have a collaborative spotify playlist where they can each add songs and it’s the most random and chaotic playlist known to man. and it’s public for the entire world to witness.
- beast boy has a spotify playlist of songs he wants to learn on the guitar (alot of vance joy, james arthur, billie ellish, ed sheeran, bruno mars & some lewis capaldi type songs)
- robin went through a secret shakira phase (that’s he’s lowkey still in) and he listens to her on his headphones when training/working out
- every titan is a fan of at least 3 taylor swift songs (because taylor has music for everyone idc)
- robin plays his saved tiktok sounds and walks around his room acting out (beast boy does this aswell occasionally)
- raven has an instrumental playlist dedicated to her meditation & also like sounds (white noise, the ocean idk things like that for relaxation) she also has a reading playlist
- terra has apparently never heard of headphones and just plays her music out loud whilst doing errands around the tower

🌈 Recently Read Fics - June 2023 🌈
These are all the amazing fics I read over the past month (from shortest to longest). Don’t forget to leave kudos and comments to show the authors your appreciation if you read any of these! 🩷
🌈 you can see my heart burning in the distance by @hershelsue (923, G)
Harry and Louis are an opposites attract couple. Harry wakes up at the crack of dawn to go to his law firm job, while Louis is just getting home from his DJ gigs. They make it work.
🌈 All This Time by @allwaswell16 (1k, T)
Louis Tomlinson had been best friends with flower shop owner Gemma Styles for years. It wasn't until she suggested he date her alpha brother that he ever thought of Harry that way. Maybe it wasn't such a bad idea...
🌈 Completely Oblivious by @itsnotreal (1k, G)
an interaction with a stranger helps these two finally figure their shit out.
🌈 the sweetness of your words knows no bounds in making my heart leap by @bottomhaztoplou (1k, M)
At the end of his heat, Harry writes a letter.
At the beginning of his rut, Louis writes one back.
🌈 we will get another day (to begin again) by @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed (1k, T)
“There’s a ton of health benefits to it, look.”
Zayn gives Liam an unimpressed stare. He doesn’t even acknowledge the phone in his hand. “I don’t care if it makes me immortal, Leeyum, I’m not going to take a freaking ice bath at six in the morning.”
🌈 time can always heal you by @larriescompass (2k, G)
harry catches a fever, louis takes care of him.
🌈 Ask Him by @fxckingprincesspark (2k, T)
When Lewis Capaldi gets pressed for information on who he's dating, he admits it... he's been seeing Niall Horan. The only problem? He jokes so much that no one believes him.
🌈 routine surveillance by @disgruntledkittenface (2k, E)
Harry’s training period for the Bureau consists of routine surveillance. One night, it becomes a little less routine.
🌈 Harry, That Kills People by @londonfoginacup (2k, T)
If there’s one thing that Harry hates, it’s getting his clothes dirty.
If there’s one other thing that Harry hates, it’s murder.
Unfortunately, right here and right now, Harry’s clothes are dirty, and he’s murdered someone. So. It’s not a great day.
“Ugh,” says Harry. “Yeargh. Bleh.”
🌈 Write You A Song by @all-these-larrythings (6k, G)
Harry’s new flat is great but the acoustics are even better. They’re so good in fact that his daily shower concerts start to entertain an audience besides his shampoo bottle.
🌈 The Way to My Heart by @ladyaj-13 (6k, T)
Louis' having a bit of a dry spell, until he bumps into an attractive alpha in the supermarket and leaves with his number. It was a hard bump. Very... muscular.
The only problem is, said alpha asks Louis to cook for him - which is not exactly his skill set.
🌈 Hold Me Tight (Or Don’t) by @hellolovers13 (13k, E)
Falling in love with Louis is easy enough.
Separating Louis from the singer persona Harry has been a fan of for years, however, is not.
But she's not the only one making assumptions.
🌈 what’s left of my halo’s black by @loveislarryislove (22k, E)
A year after a devastating breakup, Louis is still trying to put himself back together - but getting over a breakup is hard when you work as a wedding planner. Thankfully, his coworker Harry is the most supportive friend Louis could ask for. But Harry has some secrets of his own, and they send Louis' world spinning off its axis all over again.
🌈 somewhere in between and not at all by @greeneyesfriedrice (24k, E)
Harry is new to NYC and discovers something about himself, and Louis is there for him. Always.
🌈 Bitter Ends Turn Sweet by @allwaswell16 (30k, E)
It had been four years since Harry first heard the song his ex wrote about him and far longer since they broke up. He forgave Louis long ago, and now his life was focused on his career, his family, and especially his son, Max. But Louis was back in Chicago, after all this time, and he’s not an easy man to ignore.
🌈 Some Records Turnin’ by @ireallysawanangel (49k, E)
Harry is a soft alpha who owns a record store and Louis is a closeted singer omega masquerading as an alpha who randomly stumbles into Harry’s store.
🌈 another dream but always you by @nobodymoves (60k, M)
Harry is a Dreamwalker; he has the ability to visit people in their dreams and help put them on the right path. He's assigned to Louis, who's struggling after the break-up of his band. It's an unusual assignment from the beginning; Harry has a crush on Louis, and Louis's subconscious immediately decides Harry is the love of his life. When Dreamers cast Harry as their love interest, he can usually redirect them, but Louis is insistent on being Harry's boyfriend, and despite knowing they have no future, Harry wants to keep up the charade.

previous chapter | masterlist | eddie munson masterlist | general masterlist
song that I used: Lewis Capaldi - Hold Me While You Wait
@i-me-mine thank you for being here and looking at my stuff with your talented eye before it gets published, dear ♥
I think we can say that this chapter will focus on Eddie a little bit more, I hope it's fine! Plans have changed a bit and instead of three chapters, there will be four, thank you very much to everyone who shared their opinion about it and helped me decide! Thank you also for being willing to wait for one more chapter!
Tumblr media
It took a very long time before you stopped crying. You were no longer able to count all the nights you had cried. However, the fact that the tears had stopped flowing did not mean that the pain had stopped. Now, instead of crying into your pillow, you spent hours before bedtime staring aimlessly at the ceiling and couldn't help thinking that all you wanted at that moment was his arms wrapped around your body. You longed for him. Longing was fighting with pain, you didn't know what you wanted anymore. Part of you didn't want to see him ever again, while the other part couldn't stand the craving. The two contradictions were at war within you driving you crazy and causing sleepless nights.
Eddie took a completely new plan. Since you actually needed the space he wanted to give it to you, but he also made sure that he didn't completely disappear from your daily life. He paid special attention to always make at least one appearance. When your eyes met in the school corridor he immediately smiled genuinely and waved at you. Even if at first your gaze immediately escaped in a completely different direction, it didn't matter. The important thing was that you noticed him. That you knew he noticed you. Every few days, first thing in the morning when you opened your locker little notes flew out of it, which always wished you a good day. You knew perfectly well who was writing them, you would recognize the handwriting anywhere. When you entered the class you shared together a carefully wrapped cookie was waiting on your seat on the desk, and attached to it was another piece of paper. A slightly larger one, on which he left various drawings or silly riddles and rebuses. At first you guarded against it. You gave all the cookies to Robin, and quickly hid the riddles and drawings at the bottom of your backpack. Eddie, however, did not give up. There were days when he was your daily routine, when you spent almost twenty-four hours in each other's company, and it still wasn't enough. Now he had to fight for every second, but he didn't mind. He knew it was worth it, especially when, a few weeks later, he saw you once again roll your eyes at the sight of a cookie, but this time you didn't immediately throw it into your backpack. Instead, you ate it and then looked at the attached piece of paper, where there was a particularly silly rebus. When he noticed the gentle smile that flashed across your expression he felt like getting up from his seat and falling to his knees in front of you begging for forgiveness, because he again wanted to be the reason for your smile. This time, unfortunately, he couldn't take the shortcut, but that didn't scare him anymore. Lately his life had consisted of quick, convenient and reckless decisions that did not end well.
After a whole week of barely sleeping nights, Friday was a challenge for you. You felt as if you were behind a fog, completely like the outside world was not reaching you. Like a shadow you roamed the halls following Robin and trying to keep up with her. At each class your eyelids became incredibly heavy, and the teachers' voices seemed to become much more monotonous and soporific. To make matters worse, after class you had to deal with an essay that had a deadline on Monday.
A pleasant silence greeted you in the library. All the tables were occupied so you were not the only one who left everything to the last minute. You moved straight to your favorite place. In the fantasy section you sat on the floor between the shelves, looking around. Whenever you came here with Eddie you sat in exactly the same place looking here for inspiration for songs or his new campaigns. You involuntarily smiled at the memory of the hours you shared together between these bookcases. The closeness that was between you, the warmth that filled you from the inside but also enveloped you on the outside. You missed it so badly.
Giving in to nostalgia, you reached to the very bottom of your backpack where all the messages and drawings he had left you recently were still lying. Of them all, one in particular caught your attention. A sketch of a lighthouse with sea waves crashing against it. Feeling the familiar sting in your heart, you put the rest back in your bag and took out your textbook, wanting to change the course of your thoughts. Unfortunately, it wasn't easy because the thought of whether the storm was definitely over came back like a boomerang. Resigned, you closed your eyes for a moment, resting your head against the cold wall. Inhale, exhale...inhale...exhale...everything will work out. Someday. Eventually.
The Hellfire campaign had just come to an end when Steve walked into the drama room to pick up the kids and drive them home. When everything was cleaned up everyone left the school. Eddie kept a few steps behind the teens and Steve.
"Steve! Holy shit, Steve!" Robin ran out of the school panicked. "I can't find her anywhere!"
"Robin, calm down. Who can't you find?"
"y/n! We were supposed to meet after band rehearsal, she was supposed to be waiting for me in the library because she was working on some essay, but when I went there all the tables were empty, I searched all the classrooms but she's nowhere to be found, I even called her house, but her mom said she's not back yet, I'm already running out of ideas!" Robin's worry was justified. The three of you met when you started working at Scoops Ahoy, and what you went through together made the very worst scenarios pop into your friend's head.
"Calm down, I'm sure you must have passed each other somewhere, or she just forgot that you were supposed to meet." Steve tried to calm her down.
"We need to split up and look for her!" said Dustin.
"I'm sure she's somewhere in the area!" added Lucas.
Eddie listened to the conversation. He knew that you would never forget meeting with Robin, which also began to worry him. While the others were conferring about where you might have been he unnoticed returned to the school.
You were standing on the beach at the shore. The water was gently brushing your feet and the sun was pleasantly casting warm rays on your face. Eddie was calling your name from afar, you turned with a smile in the direction of his voice but you didn't see him anywhere. You started looking around but still couldn't see him anyplace. Suddenly the sky was obscured by dark storm clouds, and in the blink of an eye the calm surface of the water began to storm, and the waves piled up and smashed with loud bang against everything they encountered in their route. Only then you saw him. He was fighting the element, trying with all his might to stay afloat. The water swamped him at every moment, he was desperately catching air waving his arms while still calling your name. This time, however, it wasn't in a warm and cheerful tone like the one at the beginning, now he was begging for your help, with horror in his eyes as he watched you stand motionless on the edge. It's not that you didn't want to help him. You wanted to, in fact, so badly, but you couldn't. You were paralyzed and, despite your inner struggle, you were unable to overcome the force that held you down. You felt like screaming, but your mouth wouldn't open either.  "He is drowning. He's drowning because of you." some voice whispered it in your ear. You were a prisoner of your own body and of a voice you had never heard before. His cries for help were getting shriller and shriller, the more you wanted to move you were met with more resistance. Suddenly, the light of a lighthouse was pointed straight at him. "This is your fault. Now take a good look because this is the last of the breaths he will take before the water floods his lungs and consumes him."
"y/n!" Eddie immediately knelt down next to you when he found you hunched over and leaning against the bookshelf. You were mumbling something under your breath; he could see you were having a nightmare. When Robin said you were not sitting at any of the tables in the library he knew where to look for you. He knew perfectly well that he would find you in your place. Nevertheless, he did not expect to find you sleeping there. Beside you lay a textbook and on the textbook was a drawing of a lantern he had left for you.
He gently grabbed your arm and, repeating your name over and over, began to shake you slightly. After a while you woke up terrified. Your eyes jumped around the room quickly and in panic until they finally stopped on his face.
"You're alive." you said still not fully conscious. Not in control, feeling as if it was still a dream you threw your arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
Eddie was in shock. Why would he be dead? This question, could wait. After a moment's hesitation, he reciprocated the hug feeling as if he was on cloud nine having you in his arms again. He nuzzled against your neck, snuggling his face into its bend. He felt like crying. The warmth that emanated from you instantly chased away the coldness in his heart that was there, it was overwhelming. He did not say a word for fear that the slightest whisper would frighten you away.
Your breathing was still rapid and irregular. Whatever you were dreaming about must have been really scary. With one hand he began to stroke your back, remembering that this was one of the gestures that always calmed you down in nervous situations.
Neither of you expected the moment of closeness, but you both allowed yourselves to enjoy it. No matter how much he broke your heart it was still only in his arms that you felt safe. You wanted to melt into his embrace and stay there forever. Unfortunately, when you finally calmed down, the shock of the dream passed and you realized everything that was happening you quickly moved away and got up from the floor. Eddie with sadness in his eyes watched as a thick, unbreakable wall grew between you again.
"I'm sorry. It was a moment of weakness." You said quietly picking up your things from the floor.
"Right..." He didn't even hide the sorrow in his voice. "You should...uh- you should go to find Robin, together with Harrington and the rest are out of their minds what's happening to you." You nodded and in silence you both walked back to the parking lot.
"Where the hell have you been?" shouted Robin running up to you.
"In the library, I kinda fell asleep..." you replied embarrassed.
"Robin was already thinking that the Russians had kidnapped you." Dustin laughed.
"Fortunately, no. Can we go home now?" you asked looking at your friend.
"On condition that you will stay with me tonight. Someone has to see to it that you finally get some sleep." replied Robin rolling her eyes. "Since you won't take care of yourself, someone has to do it for you."
Eddie and the rest of them watched as your silhouettes moved away as you walked faster toward your bikes. He was glad that you had Robin with you and that Robin wanted to help you, wanted to take care of you, but he couldn't overtake the desire to be in her place. He was the one who wanted to take care of you. He would give a lot to be able to take you home now and tuck you to sleep in his arms.
"How did you know where to find her?" asked Steve.
"She was in the library." Eddie shrugged his shoulders.
"Robin said she wasn't there," he said.
"She said she wasn't at any table, and she was right, which doesn't change the fact that she was in the library all that time." he smiled nostalgically. "She was, um... In our favorite place," he said.
"You have to be patient." Steve sighed and patted him on the shoulder. "Thanks for your help."
He knew patience was never his best side but what else could he do? Even if he never gets you all back like he wanted, maybe one more moment of weakness like today will come along?
Tumblr media
"Robin! Holy shit, Robin!" you ran through the corridor straight towards your friend. On the opposite side of the corridor stood the entire Hellfire Club looking at you with curiosity. You were bursting with excitement.
"What happened?" she asked catching you in the middle as you stumbled and almost fell over.
"Do you remember The Soul? Where the competition was?"
"yeah, I remember."
"This morning they called me and asked if I'd like to perform on Friday night! They are organizing some kind of 'evening for the broken-hearted'" with your fingers you made a gesture of quotation marks. "And they said they would love to hear more similar songs performed by me like the one I sang at the contest."
"Oh my gosh that's wonderful!" Robin exclaimed and the two of you started jumping up and down with excitement.
"Hey y/n!" shouted Gareth after overhearing all your conversation. "Congratulations!" he and the rest came up to you.
"When is the performance?" asked Simon.
"Saturday at 8 pm." you replied. The smile didn't leave your face. It had been a long time since Eddie had seen you so radiant. At this sight, a smile pressed itself to his lips.
"Can we come?" asked Dustin.
"If you guys want to, sure you can. I could use a little support." You laughed nervously, and after a moment your gaze fell on Eddie who was standing at the back. He smiled at you. I'm proud of you. He wanted to convey that. You only reciprocated the smile slightly and turned towards Robin saying that you must go now.
Tumblr media
Saturday turned out to be a very hard day. Eddie had not had the strength to get out of bed since early morning. Overwhelmed by everything, he lay hugging his pillow letting his own brain plunge him even further. Stupid. Worthless. Hopeless. These and many other unpleasant words scrolled alternately in his mind. The hatred he felt for himself was slowly beginning to scare him. As it reached four in the afternoon, he heard a quiet knock on the door.
"You okay, son?" Wayne asked, stepping inside. Not knowing what to answer, the younger Munson remained silent. "Listen...I don't mind you spending all day in bed, but why don't you at least eat something? I made soup." The man sat down next to him on the bed.
"What if I'm the same as him?" a whisper filled the room.
"Who?" Wayne answered only after a longer moment.
"My father."
"Eddie what the-"
"No, Wayne. Listen." The boy quickly broke off and sat down, interrupting his uncle. "Problems with the law? They're there, I'm a fucking drug dealer, just like him, I hurt everyone who loves me, I destroy everything that comes across my path, I'm a goddamn failure, just like him! What's next, will I kill someone too? Maybe I should sooner do it to myself-"
"Edward Munson!" Wayne cut off before Eddie could finish his sentence. He hadn't raised his voice at him in years. The last time was in his teenage years when he started to get into selling drugs. "Under this roof, you don't have the right to talk about yourself like that, do you understand?" His voice was serious and firm. "You're not like him, and I know because-" the man was at a loss for words for a moment. "Because I raised you! And I raised my boy well enough to know that he didn't do these wrongs on purpose. You have a good heart, just like your mother, and nothing will change that, no matter how large of a monster you think yourself to be." He sighed. "You lost your way son. You had a right to it, but just because you got lost doesn't mean you'll never find your way home again. I know it's hard to deal with, but never in your life compare yourself to that man. You can't." His uncle's stone face was now replaced by a worried expression. They had always avoided the subject of his father like a fire, and both probably didn't expect such a strong reaction.
"'m sorry." Eddie muttered.
"It's alright, son." the man replied more calmly. "Do you want to come out of your den and eat soup with your old man?" He smiled slightly.
They both sat down at the table and began to eat in silence. It was a pleasant family silence, during which they simply felt comfortable in each other's company. Eddie knew that no matter how hard he tried he would never in his life be able to show his uncle how grateful he was for his presence in his life.
"Y/n has a gig tonight, she's going to sing her songs." said Eddie looking at the table.
"Aren't you going to go?"
"I don't know... I don't know if he wants me to be there."
"Listen to me boy, even if things haven't been very good between you two lately...That girl has always been there for you, I think you should be there and support her no matter what."
Just then, a knock on the door sounded in the trailer. Without waiting for an invitation, the entire Corroded Coffin rushed inside greeting Wayne.
"What the hell dude? You don't mean to tell me you want to go to her show looking like that!" Gareth made a disgusted face looking at his friend. Wayne involuntarily snorted with laughter. "Go take a shower and get dressed somehow nicely so we don't embarrass her!"
"Don't even try to say you're not going, that option is out of the question." Jeff added while threatening him with his finger. Munson just nodded his head and disappeared behind the bathroom door.
Tumblr media
When they arrived at the place you were slowly getting ready to go on stage. Robin held your shoulders and Steve said something quickly while you took deep breaths. Eddie immediately remembered how it was you who calmed him down before his first performance by holding his hand and repeating over and over that it would be okay. That girl was always there for you. Wayne's words rolled around in his head. Unfortunately, no matter how much he wanted to do the exact same thing for you, he knew it could have made things even worse, so he sat down at one of the tables in the back without taking his eyes off you. You looked around nervously, stopping your gaze at all the familiar faces that were there. The kids were sitting in the front row stealing all your attention by smiling at you and waving. You could see with the naked eye that their presence and excitement touched you. Your gaze traveled farther until it found Gareth, Jeff and Simon who also gave you wide smiles of encouragement. At the very end, your gaze stopped on a familiar storm of curls and dark brown eyes that you would have found at the end of the world. Good luck. He mouthed and placed his hand slightly above your heart on his guitar pick necklace that you had given him. I'm here for you. You're going to be great. There were so many things he wanted to convey to you with that one simple gesture.
You sang some covers and songs, and those songs you wrote yourself. He was proud of you. Your songs were so beautiful that they touched everyone in the hall, looking around the room he saw some people wiping away tears surreptitiously. He himself found it hard to hold back, still remembering that he was the main inspiration for writing these songs. The last song was a new one, he certainly hadn't heard it, but like each of the previous ones, it went straight to the heart.
I'm waiting up, saving all my precious time Losing light, I'm missing my same old us Before we learned our truth too late Resigned to fate, fading away
So tell me, can you turn around? I need someone to tear me down Oh, tell me, can you turn around? But either way
Hold me while you wait I wish that I was good enough If only I could wake you up My love, my love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while?
Tell me more, tell me something I don't know Did we come close to having it all? If you're gonna waste my time Let's waste it right
And hold me while you wait I wish that I was good enough If only I could wake you up My love, my love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while?
I wish you cared a little more I wish you'd told me this before My love, my love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while?
This is you, this is me, this is all we need Is it true? My faith is shaken, but I still believe This is you, this is me, this is all we need So won't you stay a while?
And hold me while you wait I wish that I was good enough If only I could wake you up My love, my love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while?
I wish you cared a little more I wish you'd told me this before  My love, my love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while? Stay a while Stay a while My love, my love, my love Won't you stay a while?
Somewhere in all the hurricane of pain, he noticed something else. Listening to the words, he saw things he had been yearning to see for a long time, but was still unsure. Did you miss him? Were you missing the same old you? He would hold you and stay a while, he would stay for as long as you wanted him to. My faith is shaken, but I still believe. These words were his lifeline. He grasped at them like a drowning man grasps at a razor. Yet it wasn't that simple. What if he misunderstood everything? What if he interpreted everything wrong and is only getting his hopes up unnecessarily?
When you finished playing people stood up to start applauding you. He felt himself starting to run out of air, it was too crowded. Taking advantage of the moment of chaos, he quickly walked out in front of the building. With shaking hands, he lit a cigarette and leaned against a brick wall. Deep breaths, Munson. Deep breaths. He repeated to himself in his mind, but those inhalations were getting shallower and shakier.
"Eddie?" at the sound of your voice he jumped up and quickly extinguished his cigarette by throwing it into a trashcan nearby. He looked at you as if you were a ghost. A figment of his imagination, because after all, it was impossible for you to choose him out of everyone who was there for you, right? His intrusive thoughts started working at top speed saying that you were definitely here just to yell at him for coming here. To remind you that he shouldn't be here because you don't want to see him anymore, and that he should finally give you a break and disappear from your life.
"I know that because of what I did to you you think that I didn't care about you and that's why I chose her. But that's not true, I did care and still do." he said. He was losing control of himself, something inside him was breaking. He couldn't hold it in anymore. "You think you were not good enough, but that's not true. You were more than good enough."
Now you were even more shocked than he was. In fact, you had come here with the intention of talking, but you didn't expect such sudden confessions on his part. His cracking voice made you want to approach him, but you still stood motionless waiting for his further words.
"I am not...I am not worthy of your love. I think I chose Chrissy at the time because I was afraid that you, too, would in time find that you were treating me too good and would stop." He began walking nervously around while combing his hands through his hair. "And if I had already felt all the love that you wanted to give me, if I had let you- I would not have been able to give it up. She broke my heart, but if the same thing would happen with you, if I would let you love me the way you wanted to, and then you would see that I don't really deserve it because I'm as hopeless as everyone says, and you would decide to take it away- It would kill me. It would also kill me that I will never be able to give you what you deserve. I'm a walking life disaster, and you deserve a life like a fucking fairy tale!" Pandora's box opened releasing all the demons out of him. "Chrissy never treated me well, never made me feel loved. She treated me like everyone else all my life, she just covered up well with that- She treated me the way I deserved to be treated. She treated me like the worthless piece of shit which I am, that's why I chose her. I was terrified of all the good that was connected to you. It still scares me. I'm trying so hard to control it all, you don't even know how hard it is for me to pretend that it's okay. Nothing is good without you y/n" he felt himself falling apart. With each new tear, a piece of his heart flew out of him. "I would give a lot, really a lot for one more moment of weakness, y'know? But the worst thing is that I have nothing to give! I have nothing valuable in my life that I could give away, and I don't deserve it. I am fucking unworthy."
"Eddie..." His confession opened your eyes to things you hadn't noticed before. Your own pain focused all of your attention, causing you to overlook what effect this whole situation was having on him. You reached out wanting to grab his hand but he moved away.
"I would die for one more moment of weakness like that, but I know that since it was just a moment of weakness you didn't really want it. And I don't want to force you to do anything. I can't. I'm sorry. I am so fucking sorry. For everything." He wiped his tears with his sleeve and turned away.
"Eddie, please wait!" you shouted after him, but it did nothing. All you could do was stare at his receding silhouette. At the same moment, you began to realize many things you hadn't thought of until now. They began to bombard you with unimaginably great force.

Standing in the bedroom of her hotel suite, Amara looked at her reflection in the vanity mirror as she clasped her necklace into place around her neck. She wasn’t working today, instead taking a much-needed day off; it was her first in the few weeks she’d been in Cordonia.
In the few days since her lunch with Liam, Amara’s mind had been jumbled. She had told herself since her arrival that anything she still felt for him needed to be buried, and she had done … fair. She had her moments, times when she was unable to stop both her head and heart from wandering no matter how hard she tried, but for the most part, she’d done pretty well with suppressing it.
That was until Liam uttered three words to her that ruined everything: “I miss you.” Sure, she wondered, but knowing for certain that some part of him still felt the same about her as she did him caused those suffocated feelings to set fire to all of the memories lying dormant in her chest that she had tried forcing herself to forget. Now, it was like she couldn’t shut them off. She needed to pull herself together, though.
Over the past two years while she was in New York, thinking about Liam was something Amara did daily; he was a constant presence in her mind and she couldn’t escape the thought of him. That was ok, however, because there was an ocean between them and they didn’t see each other, let alone speak. Now, she was back in Cordonia on his turf, back to the place where everything began, back to working alongside him in a certain capacity. Being there was hard enough, but she also knew how good Liam was at reading people; he had been so easily able to pick up on her tells two years ago, pointing out things she did that gave her away that she didn’t even realize herself. And he always had a way of drawing her in because of it.
If any part of Liam was able to sense that Amara still held onto what they once had in the same way he did, she worried she wouldn’t be able to hide her feelings any longer. He would draw them out of her the way he’d always been able to.
Stepping out of her room and walking to the living area of her suite, Amara was met by Riley and Daniel. “Got everything?” Daniel asked.
“I think so,” Amara nodded.
Just then, her phone rang. She pulled it out of her pocket, rolling her eyes when she saw the name flash across the screen. “You’re taking today off. Don’t answer it,” Daniel said, assuming he knew who it was.
“If I don’t, he’ll just keep bothering me. I’ll only be a minute.” She glanced at Riley. “Would you mind?”
“Not at all,” Riley beamed.
Amara stepped back down the hall and into her room before answering the call. “Hello, Bradshaw.”
“Ms. Onasis,” Bradshaw greeted. “How are things in Cordonia?”
“They’re fine. I assume you’re calling to check in and see where I’m at as far as getting people on board?”
Bradshaw let out a wry laugh. “That I am. How did that festival go?”
“It was … informative. After speaking with some of the nobles, it’s clear our focus needs to be more on the people. The nobles themselves said that while King Liam will take what they think into consideration, the people’s opinions are what will matter most to him going into the decision. ‘There’s far more of them than there are us’ is how one of them put it.”
“I see …” Bradshaw stayed quiet for a moment. “I mean, what do you think King Liam is going to do? You do know him fairly well …”
Amara tensed her jaw; she thought back to her lunch with Liam and him mentioning that he thought Bradshaw knew something about their past. “Oh, you mean because I worked with Cordonia in the past? That’s why you hired me in the first place, wasn’t it?” she bit out.
“Well, of course. Obviously you have experience dealing with royalty. And look at just how well things turned out for them,” Bradshaw scoffed. “I mean, unless there’s another reason you think I hired you …”
Closing her eyes, Amara let out a breath; she knew he was smiling smugly on the other end of the phone. She wasn’t going to say what she wanted and call him out; she didn’t know exactly what he knew, but getting a rise out of her would do her no favors. There was a chance he knew too much and she wasn’t going to risk finding that out. “Anyway … my suggestion going forward … you need to come up with ways to show your support to Cordonia as a whole.”
“Well, that’s easy. I can talk circles around them when it comes to anything to do with the military. We’d be more than happy to lend support to Cordonia’s armed forces—”
“No,” Amara interrupted. “They’ll think you’re trying to turn Cordonia’s military into one like yours, and they’re wary of your military as it is, so you need to get away from that altogether. When I say ‘show your support,’ what I mean is toward things like their charities and such. For example, they just had a charity polo match to raise funds for the children’s hospital. Show your support in that aspect. Show empathy toward their causes and support their goals. Show you’re in this for more than just yourself.”
“Ok …”
Amara could hear the irritation in his tone. “I’m sure there are other upcoming events where Auvernal showing their support will go a long way. I’ll look into it and let you know what I come up with. But for now … your work there seems to finally be garnering some attention here. I just saw a paper the other day where they showed photos of you and your family out together, and I heard some murmurs about how you look like a cute family. So that seems to be sending the message we want it to.”
“And what about King Liam and Queen Madeleine? Have you been able to gauge where they are in making this choice?”
“A little,” Amara replied. “They are in the middle right now. They want to make sure that making an alliance is the best thing for Cordonia. What they want to see from you is that they can trust you. Their trust is something Auvernal needs to earn.” She paused for a moment, debating whether to elaborate more. To hell with it. “Also … they’re questioning some of your terms and whether or not they’re things they can agree with going forward.”
Bradshaw scoffed in annoyance. “Those are things that Liam and I can discuss between ourselves once he starts coming to his damn senses.”
“Well, I think you need to remember that you need to be willing to make compromises too,” Amara said. “You’re the one courting Cordonia, not the other way around.”
“Why don’t you leave the politics to the men, Ms. Onasis. You just focus on sprucing up Auvernal’s image. We’ll chat again soon.”
Amara furrowed her brows as she pulled the phone away from her ear; he had abruptly ended the call. “That egotistical little fu—” She was cut off when she heard Daniel calling her name. She took a deep breath and let it out; she wasn’t going to allow him to ruin her day. Stepping out of her room, she made her way down to the living area again. “Ok, I’m ready.”
Riley and Daniel stood. “We’ll head down first,” Daniel said, and Amara nodded.
“I’ll meet you in the lobby,” Riley smiled before the two exited the suite.
After waiting a few moments and getting a message from Riley, Amara headed out of her suite and stepped into the elevator, riding it down to the main floor. The doors slid open and she stepped out into the lobby; she only made it a few steps before she heard her name being called. She turned to see someone stepping off the other elevator. “You forgot this,” the woman smiled, extending her arm.
“Oh,” Amara sighed with a smile. “Thank you, Imogen. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
****
Sitting at his desk in his study, Liam’s hand was curled around his chin as he stared out the window, lost in thought.
In the few days since his lunch with Amara, the way she consumed Liam’s mind had only seemed to get worse. He swore there was something still there on her end in the way she looked at him. However, when he told her that he missed her … he couldn’t read her reaction to gauge her response to his words. Not that it made them any less true. It didn’t. He thought about what Daniel had told him two years ago. “Amara’s really good at flying under the radar when she wants to.” He was right; Amara was good at the game of stoicism, almost as good as he was. If she wanted to hide anything she was potentially still holding onto from their past, she’d be able to … but only for so long.
While Amara was good at showing stoicism, Liam was better at reading people. He just needed to get all of the thoughts of her … and her return … and what it could all potentially mean … to stop clouding his mind so damn much. Every time he saw her, he found himself in a stupor while drowning in the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens, drowning in the memories, drowning in everything he’d wanted to ask and say to her for two years.
“Liam?”
The voice pulled his attention, and Liam glanced over to see Rashad and Madeleine staring at him curiously.
**
Sitting in the conference room, the royal council and advisors conversed with each other. The King, however, sat at the head of the large table with his hands clasped together over his mouth, staring out the window, lost in a daze.
There was a flicker of something that seemed to spark between Liam and Amara during their moment alone in the stables at the charity polo match. It was a simple gesture — her fingers inadvertently brushing against his skin as she fixed the collar of his shirt — but it awoke something. And in the two weeks since, Liam found himself struggling to not think about her in ways that went beyond their professional relationship.
They were getting closer – to what, he didn’t know – but their newfound friendship had started to shift. Their mostly subtle innocent flirting didn’t feel so innocent anymore, at least not on Liam’s end; there were underlying tones of truth behind his coquetry. And for Amara’s part, she seemed to be going right along with it, returning his rising flirtations and lingering smiles and stares with her own.
Liam found himself wanting to be around her more than he already was, looking for excuses to see her and spend even more time with her. What started as just meeting in the day during her normal working hours had now turned into Liam and Amara staying late into the evening in his study, going over preparations for upcoming interviews and public events that they both knew he didn’t need preparing for. Most of the time they spent together recently consisted of the two of them talking, laughing, and getting to know more about the other on a personal level; it had nothing to do with work at all.
Liam also found himself paying closer attention to things he knew he shouldn’t be, reading Amara, and taking notice of otherwise minuscule details. He noticed the way her blue eyes would sparkle when she would see him, similar to the way his eyes lit up when he saw her. He picked up on the way she would fidget with the charm of her necklace when he would come closer in proximity than necessary to her, but she never moved away; she seemed to welcome it. He noticed how she bit her plump bottom lip when she was concentrating or was deep in thought and how she would coyly smile when she caught him watching. He found her mere presence able to instantly lift his mood. Both her smile and laugh were captivating and infectious, her witty remarks were refreshing, and her charisma was enthralling.
Although his marriage to Madeleine was nothing more than a political one, Liam hadn’t looked in another woman’s direction in the few months they had been married. He didn’t see the point. He meant what he said when he told Amara his reasoning behind not partaking in an arrangement, even with permission to do so; he didn’t want another meaningless relationship. In his mind, it felt as though one would always offer something the other couldn’t, but either way, he’d never get what he truly desired out of either. It would be ineffectual.
But then Amara blew into his life, challenging him in ways no one had ever dared in more ways than one, making him look the other way for the first time. Now, Liam couldn’t seem to shut his thoughts off. He couldn’t explain it; all he knew was that it was there … something he couldn’t quite describe. The way he was starting to feel was something he’d never felt before.
And maybe worse … he was starting to wonder what it would be like to act on those sudden feelings.
“Liam?”
Constantine’s voice pulled the King from his musings, and he glanced over to see the council members, his advisors, and his father staring at him curiously. “I’m sorry. What were you saying?”
“The support you’re starting to receive from the people and the press, especially after that charity polo match … things are really turning around,” Constantine smiled.
“Yes,” Liam nodded. “I’m thankful for that.”
“Good thing someone had the idea to hire some outside help,” Constantine quipped with a good-natured grin. “Whoever that was, you should thank them.”
“Yeah,” Liam lightly scoffed, trying to push down his lingering thoughts about the person his father was referring to. “Thanks for that …”
**
Liam let out a breath and cleared his throat. “I’m sorry. What was that?” he asked, curbing the eagerness in his tone.
“That I should know by the end of the week,” Rashad repeated.
Madeleine settled back in her chair, her expression one of indifference up until Rashad’s statement; surprise filled her eyes as she arched an eyebrow, even as her expression maintained its apathy. “That was … much sooner than I had anticipated.” Liam met and held her gaze as a subtle smile played on both their lips. “We’ll have much to discuss and prepare for in the upcoming weeks …”
Liam nodded. “Yes, we will.”
****
That evening, Liam walked along the pathway outside of the palace toward the stables to go see Drake before he left for the day. “Hey, you!” a voice called out from behind him.
Liam turned to see Riley making her way down the same pathway, slowing his pace. “Hello,” he smiled. He greeted her with a peck on the cheek before they fell into step and continued making their way down the path. “How are you?”
“I’m good,” Riley nodded. “I’m meeting Drake so we can go grab dinner. Wanna join us?”
“Ah, thank you, but I have dinner plans with Madeleine already.”
“Your loss,” Riley quipped, earning a chuckle from him. “What are you doing?”
“I was just heading down to say hello before he left.” They fell into a quiet. Liam gave her a sidelong glance; he was feeling a little uneasy for wanting to ask about Amara now knowing for certain that Riley was aware of their past. He shrugged it off. “So … how’s Amara?”
“Oh, uh … she’s good,” Riley nodded. She felt a little awkward, this being the first conversation she’d had with Liam by herself regarding Amara since learning the truth of his past with her.
“I haven’t heard from her since we met for lunch the other day, so I was just wondering how she was faring with the Auvernal project …”
“Well, I know she didn’t work today; she took a day to herself, so Daniel was covering for her.”
Liam’s brows furrowed. The Amara he remembered didn’t take random days to herself. On a few rare occasions in the past, he had gotten her to take a day so they could spend it together, but it wasn’t without a fight on her end. “That seems unlike her.”
“She … she needed it.”
Liam remembered what Daniel had told him that night at the beer garden when he asked about her. “She still throws herself into work but tends to prioritize things a little differently nowadays.” He knew better than anyone that people could change their ways, but it still caught him by surprise. “Yeah … I suppose everyone needs one of those days now and then,” he said.
“Mmhmm,” Riley nodded.
“What did she do?”
“Oh, um … I know she was going down to the beach for a bit … I’m not sure after that.”
Liam glanced over at her, noticing the way she was averting eye contact with him; he couldn’t help but feel like there was something he was missing. Either that, or Riley just felt awkward talking to him knowing about his past with Amara. Sometimes, his ability to read people felt almost like a hindrance instead of an advantage because it caused him to overthink, just like now. Before he could ask, he heard Drake’s voice calling out to them.
“Hey, guys!”
Liam and Riley glanced up, seeing Drake walking toward them from the stables. “Hi,” Riley grinned before he greeted her with a kiss.
“Li,” Drake nodded, shaking his hand. “What are you two up to?”
“We met up while both heading down here to see you,” Liam explained.
“Well, don’t I feel special?” Drake jested.
“You should,” Riley chuckled. “I asked Liam if he wanted to come to dinner with us, but he has plans with Madeleine.”
Drake looked at Liam curiously. “We have some things we need to go over, so we figured we’d do it over dinner,” Liam shrugged as they started walking back toward the front of the palace. “So, Maxwell called me earlier about the bonfire. Are you guys going?”
“Of course,” Drake replied. “You’re coming, right?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there,” Liam nodded. “I have a late meeting with Landon in Portavira that day, but I’ll be coming straight from that.”
*******
A couple of days later, Riley and Daniel stood in the kitchen of her cabin after eating a late lunch. Amara was out that day, meeting with some of the upper echelons of Cordonian locals, getting their thoughts on the matters of a potential alliance with Auvernal; she told Daniel to take the day off, that it wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle on her own. It worked out, giving him time to talk to Riley without Amara around.
“We have got to get those two to talk,” Riley said as she tossed a bottle of water at him.
“Yeah, but how? Amara is struggling with even being around him, let alone talking.”
“Well, I can’t imagine it’s easy,” Riley said. “And I’m trying to be understanding of that, but you and I both know that it needs to happen … for both their sakes. And the sooner, the better. I just think that maybe a little nudge is just what she needs,” she shrugged.
“Yeah, but it needs to be in a way that’s not painfully obvious, even though I’m sure she’ll figure us out one way or another,” Daniel chuckled.
Riley thought for a moment, and an idea struck. “You know … you remember our friend Maxwell?” she asked, and Daniel nodded. “He’s having another bonfire tomorrow night …”
“Who’s coming?”
“Drake and me. Liam …”
“And me and Amara?” Daniel chuckled.
“Maxwell is a ‘the more, the merrier’ kind of guy. I’m sure he’d be alright with me inviting a couple of friends. Plus, it’s not like he hasn’t met you both already; granted, that was two years ago when we all went to his place for a bonfire before, but I’m sure he won’t care.” Daniel nodded, and Riley grabbed her phone, typing out and sending a quick message. “Now we wait …” They didn’t wait long; her phone pinged within just a few moments. “He said absolutely no problem.”
“Well, that’s settled,” Daniel said before taking a sip of his drink. “You realize she’s going to kill us once she figures out we’re meddling …”
“I don’t particularly care,” Riley shrugged. “She knows both of our thoughts and opinions on everything. So our meddling — which is very mild, might I add — should not come as much of a surprise to her.”
“True,” Daniel chuckled.
“What’s true?”
Riley and Daniel both turned to see Drake walking inside. “Hey,” Riley grinned. “You’re home early.”
“Yeah, I finished up earlier than I thought,” Drake said before pressing a kiss to her lips. “So I took off.” He turned to Daniel, giving a nod of acknowledgment. “What are you two up to?”
“Nothing … just chatting.”
“Speaking of, I should probably head out,” Daniel said as he stood from the stool at the counter. “I need to check in with Amara and see how she made out this afternoon.”
“I’ll walk you out,” Riley smiled.
“Drake,” Daniel called out, both men throwing their hands up in a wave before he and Riley started toward the door.
After walking Daniel out, promising to send him a message with all the details of the bonfire later, Riley returned to the kitchen. “So, how was your day?”
“Not bad,” Drake replied before stuffing a chip into his mouth. “What did you do?”
“Hung out with Daniel … had some lunch. Oh, and I talked to Maxwell earlier; he wants to know if you can bring the s’more stuff tomorrow,” Riley chuckled.
Drake shook his head with a good-natured grin. “Don’t we always?”
Riley knew she should probably mention to Drake that Daniel and Amara were coming. “Speaking of the bonfire … Liam is definitely coming, right?”
“Yeah, as far as I know,” Drake answered. “And speaking of Liam …” He lifted his gaze to meet hers. “He told me the other night …”
“Told you what?”
Drake arched his brow. “About him … and Amara … their past …”
Riley’s brows raised in surprise. “He did?” Drake nodded as he stared at her. “Before you ask, yes, I knew, but I only just found out.”
“I know,” Drake said. “I guess he asked Amara if you knew and she told him that she told you.”
Riley nodded. “So … what were your thoughts when he told you?”
Drake scoffed. “I don’t even know … I mean …” He blew out a breath. “It wasn’t just a fling between them, Ri. He really fell for her …”
“Yeah … she felt the same about him …”
Drake looked at her again; recognizing the look in her eyes, he shook his head adamantly. “Riley, do not insert yourself in the middle of this.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I know that look.”
“What look?” Riley scoffed.
“That look you get when you want to play fairy godmother or cupid or whatever the hell it is.” Drake’s words caused Riley’s mouth to fall open with a laugh. “You had that same look when you were trying to hook my sister up with fucking Bertrand,” he grimaced.
Riley giggled. “She liked him!”
“Don’t remind me,” Drake shuddered. “I still can’t figure out why.” Then his expression fell serious. “But I mean it, Riley. This isn’t the same thing as that.”
“Babe, why don’t you leave this to me,” Riley said playfully.
“No,” Drake shook his head. “Look, I get that Amara is your friend and you just want her to be happy. Hell, Liam is like a brother to me, and I want that for him too, but this is not something you need to mix yourself up in, Ri.”
“Drake, there’s so much between them that was left unsaid, and—”
“Then let them figure out how to say what they need to say if they want to.”
“But—”
“No buts, Riley. Not only is Liam a King but he is married. I don’t think I need to explain to you why meddling in this is a bad idea.” Drake eyed her for a moment before standing from his stool. “I’m gonna go jump in the shower.” He leaned down, kissing her before heading out of the kitchen.
Riley leaned against the counter and drummed her fingernails across it as she let out a breath. Drake didn’t understand; he didn’t know the whole story like she did. She knew things that not even Liam was aware of. If Drake did know, she knew he would see things differently and would look at it the same way she was. However, it wasn’t her place to tell him things that weren’t hers to tell.
*******
The following night, Liam sat with Maxwell around the bonfire pit, staring at the flames of the fire as they casually talked about their day. He had arrived in Ramsford after his meeting in Portavira, and much to his surprise, he was the only one who had shown up. Drake and Riley would typically always arrive before he did, but they weren’t there yet. He didn’t think much of it, however; he just assumed they were running a little late for whatever reason.
“There they are,” Maxwell grinned, looking just past Liam, across the lawn.
Liam sat forward and turned to look behind him; his brows furrowed when he saw two more shadowed silhouettes trailing behind the couple before they stepped into the path of light from the fire. His breath caught in his throat when he saw Amara. His eyes snapped over to Drake who was looking right at him; he subtly shook his head.
Letting out the breath he was holding, Liam slowly turned back to the fire, trying to refocus his thoughts; he knew it was futile with being in her presence. “Hey, guys,” Riley said as they approached. “Sorry we’re late.”
“No worries,” Maxwell smiled as he stood from his chair to greet them all. Liam followed suit, his eyes landing on Amara the moment they could shift in her direction, and they stared at one another for a moment.
“Max, I’m not sure if you remember—”
“Daniel and … Amara, right?” Maxwell questioned.
“Yes,” they both answered in unison.
“Thanks for letting us come,” Daniel smiled.
“Not a problem. The more the merrier,” Maxwell grinned; Daniel and Riley shared a subtle look and smile at his words. “Pick a seat.”
Daniel sat near Maxwell and Riley beside him, leaving an open chair for Drake beside her; the only other open seat for Amara to take was on Maxwell’s other side … and next to Liam. Drake tossed the items for the s’mores into the grass. “I’m going to go get the sticks.”
“I’ll help,” Liam quickly offered, popping up from his seat to follow him.
The two walked off, and once out of earshot, Drake looked over, already finding Liam staring at him with a questioning expression. “Dude, I had no idea,” he held his hands up. “Not until we pulled up the driveway and they pulled up behind us.”
“I take it Riley invited them …” Liam stated.
“Obviously,” Drake quipped. “I told her not to meddle.”
Liam’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“Yesterday, I told her that you told me … just so she didn’t feel like she had to keep a secret from me because she was under the impression I didn’t know. And she got this look in her eyes, that mischievous look that says she’s up to something. And I knew …” Drake shook his head as he broke a few small branches off a tree. “I fucking knew that she was going to try to pull something. I told her not to, to leave it alone and not put herself in the middle of … whatever it is that’s happening … or not happening between you two. So, I looked at her when I saw them pull up, and she said she had already asked Maxwell and invited them before we had that conversation. She just left that part out when we actually had it,” he scoffed.
Liam nodded, letting out a breath. “It’s ok.”
“Is it?” Drake asked as he looked at him.
“Yeah. I mean … Amara and I already had a conversation … a couple of them. It’s fine.”
“If you say so. I just don’t want to put you in a weird spot.”
Liam shook his head as he grabbed a few more small branches. “You’re not.”
The truth was, despite his initial surprise, Liam was glad she was there. He was hoping with everyone else around that maybe things wouldn’t be so stiff, and it would help alleviate some of the remaining awkward tension. It was a stretch, but he could hope.
****
After building their s’mores, the group all munched as they talked. Liam and Amara appeared to be the only two not doing much talking. They both picked at their s’mores while stealing quick glances at the other, randomly adding a word or two into the conversations to make it seem as though they were paying attention.
When Amara’s phone rang, she reached into the pocket of her sweatshirt and pulled it out; Liam glanced over just in time to see a hint of worry flicker across her face before she stood from her seat, setting the plate containing her s’more down in her place. “Excuse me.”
Liam watched her hurry across the field, answering the call as she disappeared into the shadows. As the others continued to talk amongst themselves, he turned back to the fire; after a moment, he stood, setting his plate down before following her.
**
“Now you turn it,” Drake instructed Riley, helping her to turn the stick holding her marshmallow. “Ok, but don’t hold it so far down into the flames. You’re gonna burn it,” he chuckled.
Liam and Drake had been invited to Maxwell’s for a bonfire. While discussing the plans to go, Drake casually mentioned that maybe Liam could invite Amara and her friends along. “They’ve been here working. Maybe they could stand to just have a chill night out.” It didn’t take Liam all but a few seconds to figure out the motives behind Drake’s random suggestion: He wanted to see Riley. He’d been enamored by her since that night they first met at the beer garden and the two had spent some time together since.
While Daniel talked to a curious Maxwell about what life in New York City was like, Liam sat next to Amara, each toasting their own marshmallows. He glanced over at her while Drake continued to help Riley build the perfect s’more. Amara’s eyes flickered to the pair before meeting Liam’s again with a grin, the two holding a silent conversation; he nodded his head in agreement with a quiet laugh. It was painfully obvious that Drake and Riley were smitten with one other.
They weren’t the only ones, however.
When Amara turned her attention back to her marshmallow, Liam’s gaze lingered on her. He noticed the way the flames from the fire danced across her face, watching her smile when she would glance up at hearing Drake and Riley laugh together. He’d still been unable to shake the thoughts and feelings toward her that he was having, and he wasn’t sure what to do about them. The more time they spent together, the more he found himself beguiled.
And the more time they spent together, the more certain Liam became that what he was starting to feel wasn’t completely one-sided.
The way Amara would look at him, the way he would catch her staring, and how she returned his flirtatious banter, Liam couldn’t help but feel that there was something there on her end. But did it even matter? For reasons he couldn’t explain … yes. It did matter. He knew nothing would or could ever come of the way he was starting to feel, but he found himself too curious and too intrigued to be able to just let it go.
“Dude, your mallow is on fire!” Maxwell laughed.
Liam snapped out of his daze and looked at the end of his stick as he quickly raised it out of the fire. The marshmallow was completely engulfed in flames; it melted off the stick and dropped into the pit. He glanced over when he heard Amara laugh, and offered a sheepish smile. “I got a little … distracted.”
Amara held his gaze as a kittenish grin curled on her lips, almost as if she knew exactly what distracted him. Because she did. She had tried to ignore the way the atmosphere between them felt as though it had shifted over the last couple of weeks, but it was getting harder and harder to do so. Something about Liam had her tiptoeing on the edge of something she knew was far too risky to even think about. Still, it didn’t stop those thoughts from flooding her mind in the most inappropriate ways at the most inappropriate times.
Amara glanced away when the sound of her phone ringing pulled her attention; she leaned over and dug it out from her purse before looking at Liam again. “Here, have mine. I need to take this.” She offered him the stick with her perfectly toasted marshmallow as she stood from her chair; he took it, watching her answer the call as she walked across the open field.
Liam built himself a s’more as he talked with the others. When he finished eating it and Amara still hadn’t returned, he glanced over his shoulder, but he didn’t see her. While the others were preoccupied with conversation, he stood and started in the direction she had wandered. As he walked across the field, he spotted her silhouette near the gazebo; he quietly moved toward her, seeing her staring up at the sky.
Ambling his way up to her, Liam cleared his throat to announce his presence, not wanting to startle her. She looked over at him and he could just make out her smile. “Everything ok?” he asked as he approached her.
“Oh, yeah. Sorry,” Amara chuckled. “That was just an old client of mine needing a suggestion on something. I got sidetracked after the call by the view,” she gestured her hand upward. Liam stepped beside her and tilted his head back; the inky sky was littered with a blanket of stars, scattered like moondust above them. “You don’t see views of the stars like this back in the city.”
“Remind me to show you the observatory deck at the palace sometime,” Liam quietly replied as he shifted closer to her.
They stood there in the quiet for a long moment, side-by-side, close enough that if either was to merely twitch a pinky just the slightest bit, their hands would brush against each other. Liam couldn’t ignore the way he heard her breathing slightly pick up as if the closeness of him caused an uneasy thrill to shoot through her. Once again, those feelings he’d been having were at the forefront of his mind, along with wondering what, if anything, she was thinking and feeling … and what it’d be like to act on them.
A soft breath escaped Amara before she broke the silence. “A shooting star,” she said, pointing up at it.
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “Aren’t we supposed to wish on it?”
Amara glanced over at him with a smile. “Why? What would you wish for?”
Liam’s gaze fell from the sky; he remained silent for a moment, staring straight ahead before turning to look at her. “Probably something that I can’t have …”
Amara stared up at him; something about the expression on her face told him she knew exactly what he was referring to with his words. Their gazes remained locked and he could feel his heart pounding when, despite his uncertainty, his hand raised, gently brushing across her cheek; they both let out a breath at the first form of intimate contact.
Amara didn’t move. She continued to stare up at him, and his eyes flickered down to see the rapid rise and fall of her chest before he met her gaze again. Liam inched closer, and still, she didn’t move. Every rational thought, every warning from the voice in the back of his head that told him he needed to stop was abruptly silenced as he leaned down. He watched as Amara’s eyes fluttered shut before he allowed his to do the same, and he paused a hairsbreadth from her lips as their breaths mingled.
When the side of his nose brushed against hers, she felt her heart stutter as her head slightly tilted toward him. “Liam,” Amara whispered, and he inhaled the breath of his name on her lips. She froze, staying trapped in that whisper of a kiss for a blissful moment before speaking again. “You’re married …”
Liam stiffened at her words and was swiftly brought back to the reality of the situation — his situation. Keeping his eyes closed, his jaw tensed in irritation with no one but himself; he swallowed thickly as he subtly nodded his head. “I … I’m married,” he whispered in reply before drawing back just enough to meet her gaze.
They continued to stare at one another. Nothing came of that moment … nothing except Liam now knowing for certain that his feelings were not one-sided. That spark and connection he felt, it wasn’t in his head.
Amara felt it too.
**
Liam approached Amara near the gazebo just as she pulled her phone away from her ear. “Everything ok?”
Amara turned, startled at the sound of his voice. “Oh, uh … yeah,” she responded, slipping her phone back into the pocket of her sweatshirt.
“Client?” Liam asked as he continued moving toward her.
“No, it was … it was a friend. But everything is fine.”
“You just looked a little worried when you pulled your phone out back at the fire, is all. I just … wanted to make sure everything was alright.”
Amara looked up at him when he stopped next to her; she offered a subtle smile. “It is. Thank you, though … for checking.”
“Of course,” Liam nodded before he tilted his head back, looking up at the sky. Amara turned next to him, standing at his side as she looked up. “Still haven’t gotten a view like this in the city I take it?”
Amara quietly laughed as she shook her head. “No.”
They continued to look up at the starry night sky in silence, both their minds jumbling with thoughts and memories. When a shooting star came into her line of vision, Amara let out a soft gasp, feeling the nostalgia of the moment seep into her like ice.
Liam slightly stiffened beside her and closed his eyes when he felt Amara’s pinky brush against his. On her part, it was an accident — or perhaps, subconsciously it wasn’t — but she didn’t move her hand away when his pinky gently curled around hers.
Amara let out a breath as she dropped her gaze from the sky to the ground. Suddenly, Liam’s figure was eclipsing the moonlight and casting a shadow over her; she looked up, meeting his gaze as he stood in front of her, feeling her heart start to quicken its pace at that familiar look in his eyes. He lifted his hand, brushing the backs of his fingers against her cheek. Instead of backing away like she knew she should, she instinctively leaned into his touch instead as she closed her eyes.
“Amara …”
“Liam, I —”
Amara’s words were cut off, replaced by a gasp when she suddenly felt Liam’s lips a whisper away from hers as she inhaled his sigh. She was fighting every instinct inside of her to not kiss him, the same way that he was fighting his own. His fingers shifted, threading through her hair to the back of her neck, causing her to tilt her head slightly upward; the arch of his upper lip grazed hers as their noses brushed against the other and he breathed in the familiar scent of the perfume clinging to her skin.
“Liam …” Amara whispered, almost in anguish. Keeping her eyes closed, her brows furrowed as she slightly shook her head. “You … you’re still married …”
Liam let out a soft breath, but he didn’t back away nor did he stiffen at her words … because there wasn’t much truth to them this time around. “I’m getting a divorce.”

IN LIEU OF THE STRIKES
(which i am technically participating in but also i hadn’t had a writing job in like eighteen months before this and i was planning on breaking for the entirety of my degree anyways)
currently neither unions are calling for a boycott but if this goes on long enough, production will start grinding to a halt. personally, i am hoping this lasts long enough to get the tech crews, directors, and animators/cg artists/effects people also striking, because i am really hoping that that will get more of these fields unionised too and really scare the bosses into doing what we want. this industry makes hundreds of billions of dollars a year and those profits go directly into the pockets of shareholders that don’t fucking deserve them.
the point being: now if ever is the time to start catching up on the old shit. by which i mean anything you missed when it came out.
so my contribution here is sharing my current watchlists and also giving some recommendations for my favourite films and tv shows.
without further ado,
FILMS - HORROR
Tumblr media
FILMS - COMEDY
Tumblr media
FILMS - DOCUMENTARY
Tumblr media
(there are in fact many more films but i wanna also cover my tv watchlist plus recs for film and tv)
TV
Tumblr media
if anyone has any more recs for film or tv based on my current watchlists please let me know! these don’t even cover everything but i don’t want this post to be megalong.
as for my own recs:
in terms of horror, i will always rec everything jordan peele. he is one of my favourite filmmakers of this century and he has yet to miss. although personally i would advise grabbing some friends and keeping the lights on for us. another favourite of mine is the original scream. i’m not so big on the sequels personally, but i’d advise giving them ago because many people love the entire franchise and i have heard excellent things about the one with jenna ortega. thoroughbreds is technically a thriller but my god was it one of the most underrated and gripping films i’ve seen in years. 5/5 stars. check it out.
in terms of comedy, i will never not recommend pride (2014) it is a heartwarming film about solidarity between different marginalised communities, based on a real organisation of queer people that raised money for the striking miners in the uk in 1984. it was also my gay awakening in more ways than one and despite the somewhat bittersweet ending gave me a lot of hope for my future. i also highly recommend my cousin vinny which not only has marisa tomei giving the greatest comedic performance i’ve ever seen (which she deserved best actress for, by the way, she carried that fucking film) but also amazingly accurate legal dialogue. another favourite of mine is the spy who dumped me which has me actual pissing myself every time i watch it. also, the first kingsman film is a masterclass in successful parody and cinematic proof that the only good parodies are made by the lovers of a genre, not the haters.
in terms of documentary, now is a great time to revisit david attenborough’s work (we stan that man on this blog i won’t hear a word against him) and be reminded of what exactly it is that our conservationists are trying to save. particularly a life on this planet is a fascinating documentary about his own journey and beautifully scored. the elephant whisperers won best short doc at the oscars this year for a reason. although i have my issues with my octopus teacher’s philosophy in certain places, it is still one of the most incredible documentaries i’ve ever seen. lewis capaldi: how i’m feeling now is not what you think but is definitely worth a watch. (also mandatory watching for any american that calls shrek’s accent scottish.) chasing coral on netflix is something i rewatch whenever i need reminding of why i’m doing what i’m doing.
finally in terms of tv, this is my daily reminder to everyone to subscribe to dropout it is well worth the money and for today what i actually want to recommend is total forgiveness which legitimately broke me as a person and is also one of the most candid and grounded depictions of the impact of student debt i have ever seen. i would also, however, like to put some people on some limited series/complete tv shows that absolutely fuck. firstly, maid came into my life at the worst time possible and sent me into multiple meltdowns and panic attacks but remains one of my top tv shows of the year. the last of us is actually worth the hype, as much as it frustrates my science brain. la revolution is the best thing to come out of france since pain aux abricots but also comes with about four hundred content warnings so check yourself before you wreck yourself with that one. alien worlds is not quite what i’d consider a documentary but is one of the most creative things i’ve ever watched and a really accessible show about ecology and exobiology, which i love. russian doll is a show that tore me into pieces and stitched me back together again laughing and crying the whole way. don’t do yourself the disservice of not watching it. the ethos of the good place is too good not to put on here. yes it’s been memed to hell and back but it’s genuinely one of the greatest tv shows of the century so far and found and carried such a fundamentally good message that i rewatch at least once every couple years.
anyways, please include your own recs in the notes, yell about tv/films you love and show some appreciation for the people that brought them into existence. also note that they don’t have to be considered ‘great works’, i am just a wanker when it comes to this stuff. i want all your recs, good and ‘bad’.

Happy 36th Birthday singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini born January 9th 1987 in Paisley.
He is the oldest child of two and attended St Andrews Academy in Paisley where his career and love for music began,  when an artist was late to perform in his school, Paolo was asked by the music teacher to go up and sing a song.
As a teenager, in between writing songs, Paolo used to work a Saturday shift in  the family fish and chip shop business, and was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps and enter the business full time, but always knew he wanted to pursue singing.
Paolo found work as a roadie for the band Speedway, as well as performing live himself. He performed solo, as well as with Dome and Dick from The Dongues. Paolo also went on to work at Glasgow’s Park Lane Studio.
Paolo Nutini’s big break was quite an unusual one. During a homecoming concert for David Sneddon, staged by local radio station 102.5 Clyde 1, Paolo won an impromptu quiz. He was given the chance to get onstage and perform a couple of his own songs, whilst the crowd waited for Sneddon’s arrival. A member of the audience was so impressed with the performance that he offered to become Paolo’s manager.
Nutini was then invited to perform on BBC Radio Scotland after a journalist from the Daily Record saw him perform at the Queen Margaret Union. At the age of 17, Nutini moved to London and performed regularly at Balham’s Bedford pub. He was soon offered support slots with KT Tunstall and Amy Winehouse, he signed for Atlantic and began work on his first album, working with Coldplay and Badly Drawn Boy producer Ken Nelson, Nutini generated an impressive amount of buzz before his first single, “Last Request,” was released in the early summer of 2006.
He appeared at special Atlantic Records showcases at Carnegie Hall and the Montreux Jazz Festival, as well as opening for the Rolling Stones and Paul Weller. These Streets, was ultimately released in July 2006 alongside his second single, “Jenny Don’t Be Hasty.” The album fared quite well climbing to double-platinum status and sent four singles into the Top 40. Accordingly, an American release followed in January 2007.In his singing his Scottish accent, shines through, he doesn’t try to sing in an American accent like most singers do, Paolo automatically sounded like no one else. His second album, Sunny Side Up, appeared in June 2009, featuring increased contributions from Nutini’s backing band and a bright, sprightly disposition. Sunny Side Up was a number one hit, and one of the biggest-selling albums of the year – and went on to claim Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards.
The past few years Nutini has been living in his home town of Paisley, there has been the odd appearance on Karaoke posted on social media, but little news of any new materials as yet. He did however buy the Chewbacca mask worn by Lewis Capaldi on stage at TRNSMT festival, the original bidder pulled out of the auction. Paolo also donated tent thousand pound to mental health charity Tiny Changes and plans to raffle the mask to raise even more.
The Tiny Changes charity was set up in memory of Frightened Rabbit’s front man Scott Hutchison, who took his own life in 2018 after struggles with depression.
A wee Paolo story from 2020 is when he paid for a man’s food shop at Aldi after he’d forgot to bring his wallet. Apparently the embarrassed shopper went to shake Paolo’s hand, to be told: “You can’t do that just now.” it was during the first wave of the Coronavirus.
