HAWKS HAWKS HAWKS HAWKS: Chapter 353-354
Hey, folks, we're finally at the end ready to review the latest couple of chapters after only... *counts* SIX full-sized posts in so many days.
Tumblr media
By the way, kids, go look up what "scope creep" is some time. The knowledge might save your sanity some day, assuming you properly plan for it unlike me.
Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Shouto's victory over Dabi is an inspirational force among the heroes when the news rings out. All of the other heroes are facing enormous, existential fear on an individual level despite being more than willing to fight and that's understandable - they're only human. Nevertheless, a young, teenage hero who had barely received his provisional license faced his own brother - one of AFO's top fighters, nonetheless - and all but single-handedly took him down. It's a major morale boost which also understandably serves to rattle the opposition.
Tumblr media
Btw, knowing that Spinner accepted AFO's offer to make him stronger before the strike, I really want to know how his story's going to play out. He isn't near Shigaraki, AFO, Dabi, or Toga, so this could be interesting to see him spotlighted alone once again.
I'm also excited to finally get some quality screen time with Tentacole whom I believe to be criminally neglected in the series as a whole. Rooting for you, Cephalopod Son!
The news of Dabi's fall reaches Endeavor and the other heroes facing AFO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now I'm so glad to have gotten these chapters all at once. Hawks knew going into it that AFO would taunt Endeavor specifically where he was sensitive exactly like he did, but I don't think he anticipated AFO being able to find any fodder that would actually get under HIS skin, and that will likely really come into play later, even if we don't see the results of the battle for a few more chapters, and that's where I predict anything new or unsure about Hawks and his feelings are going to come out.
Now, I love this interaction and series of events. We all know it was Hawks that rose me from my dormant state on this blog. Up to this point there's only so much we had to talk about, especially since what was being speculated in the discussions of leaks that I saw were really far off from what the official translation wound up to be.
The panel about him calling himself "crippled" when AFO tries to make him feel weak and Hawks just deflects it, AFO not getting anything out of him by calling him "Nagant's replacement", and the comment Hawks made about him making "a clean break" from his family history were very sensationalized and taken out of context when I saw them. So far, everything seems to be well within character for Hawks, and literally none of that stuff bothers him. He knows AFO is just the villain trying to get his way, and Hawks has already put on his armor for whatever he anticipated AFO to throw at him.
The only thing that AFO did that actually got to Hawks was wound Endeavor. Hawks' weakness far more than his need for prosthetic wings are those he cares about and his mission. And now, Endeavor has been impaled like the shish kabob.
Damn it, Endeavor. It's okay, though, this is actually the spot I wanted to catch up to, because this is where i think we get the best Hawks characterization crumbs of the chapter.
Tumblr media
Up to this point, the main motivation for Hawks as a whole has been the same since he woke up in the hospital- "Finish the job I started as soon as possible because we're running out of time!" It's been weeks. Things have only gotten worse. The goal has never changed - only the logistics and limitations it took to reach that goal. He needs to end it yesterday. Hawks has long accepted that his death may be a necessary price in that equation, and he's at peace with that if it really will bring about the change he wants to see. Sacrificing himself so Endeavor can live and defeat AFO is more than reasonable to him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two, though. They weren't in the plan. They weren't in the calculations, ever, because unlike him these were never acceptable potential loses to Hawks. In the moment, he doesn't consider their abilities or the fact that they just saved his life. He can't risk losing them, so they were never a consideration in this fight before.
On the subject of mind games, I think it's safe to say that AFO is going to try to leverage Hawks' protectiveness of the kids to get him to slip up later on, but Tsukoyomi is the one who'll help him psychologically stay on task, while Earphone Jack plays more traditional power support. Tsukoyomi has experience keeping up with Hawks in real time, plus he has a good idea of how his teacher thinks. He also has known and worked closely with Earphone Jack as her classmate for more than two years now, and as she doesn't have to be the one maneuvering she can just focus on communicating with Tsukoyomi to set her up for success.
Tumblr media
It's a clutch impromptu support team and one that only gets better if Endeavor is able to rejoin them. There's likely going to be bumps and hiccups, I predict predominantly on Hawks' end and difficulties keeping Jirou airborne, just because of the desperateness of the situation; but the actual important things here is we're going to hopefully get some real quality Bird Bros material in a moment and get to see the goths kids kill it out there. I'm here for it!!!

dabi: everyone hates me. that’s just who i am, a crazy maniac who’s putting everything in flames
hawks: that’s not true dabi
dabi: *scoffs* you’re really sweet if that’s what you think, birdy
hawks: maybe... but i am the one who loved you when you went insane.
dabi: ...
hawks: you still think that you are the crazy one?

We don’t know what kind of midlife crisis Mihawk was going through but it must be serious for him to join Buggy’s Cross Guild… I think his children leaving home really hits him hard…
But on the other hand I’m happy we’re gonna get more of his screentime (in the next 6 years given how OP storytelling progress but a win is a win)

Divine Asma is really funny to me for the purpose of Hawke talking to Cullen and telling him “uh hey buddy aren’t you a little concerned about working for another power mad lady who uses religious iconography for their own image” and Cullen is just:

An Afternoon's Meeting
(276 Words | No Warnings)
A series of items in the Warden-Commander’s pockets, hung on a coat rack inside the hall at Vigil’s Keep:
Two vials containing a red liquid. One similar vial that is empty.
A small notebook containing no words, only a series of columns with check marks and blanks
A tuft of what appears to be brown fur
A piece of white chalk
Five knives of varying sizes, the smallest of which is flat for throwing.
Two yellow flowers, slightly wilted
Tumblr media
Finally, crumpled at the bottom, there is a very rough drawing of what appears to be a stick figure with springs emerging from its head. It is holding a staff with lines shooting from the top. A note beside the drawing in sharp handwriting says, You will know when you see the hair, and an arrow points to the figure’s head.
The page below reads:
Do not scare her. Your Warden says she is his sister and I have watched her fight with my own eyes. She will have you frozen before you can blink—yes, even you.
She is two or so inches taller than I. Her hair is dark and curly—I have drawn you an apt picture. As long as you have enough time to show her the insignia, we should have no problems. She will have a hound with her, but I do not think you will have any trouble with that fellow. Mabari do seem to favor you.
Be careful, mi vida. She is not called the Champion for idle enjoyment—though of course I would not put coin against you in any fight.
I still think I should be the one doing this. I, at least, have met her before.
For the prompt "a note in your OC's pocket from @idolsgf c: Art by the fantastic and delightful @greypetrel 💗

Lets Talk About: MHA CHAPTER 410 & The Defeat Of ALL For One
Okay, now that Christmas is over i’m going to come out the gates swinging with this analysis due to some misconceptions and words I’ve seen people putout even before the chapters release.
Bakugou did NOT defeat All For One by himself and said villains wasn’t ’nerfed’ as I’ve seen people claim. Saying and arguing in favor of that point not only invalidates Bakugous arc but everyone who fought AFO in this battle that made it possible for him to fight the man in the first place.
Firstly, let's address the whole 'Bakugou beat him on his own' thing. It's more accurate to say that Bakugou finished the man off if anything. Remember, the kids been out of commission for a LONG time due to that attack that damaged his heart. If Edgeshot wasn't there Bakugou would actually be dead and it was very obvious that was effecting him when he woke up.
His near death experience did in fact open his mind up to new possibilities to his quirk but that wasn't going to do him any good against an All For One that was constantly regressing to a younger version of himself. A version that was getting stronger and stronger with each reversion.
Remember people, up until this point AFO was in a weakened state due to All Might and his first fight. Yes he was getting younger and the plan was to rewind him enough so that’d he’d literally unmake himself but that kept making him more and more dangerous.
A fact they knew and fought against with EVERYTHING they had. It's why All For One is so pissed when Katsuki showed up because at that point, he thought an 'extra' like him had been dealt with That ALL the extras on his stage was dealt with.
Yet they all kept popping up to challenge him. Not only that but they were succeeding in pushing him back, in keeping The Demon Lord from reaching his goal. A fact that both baffled and enraged him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, even Katsuki himself admits that on his own he never would have been able to stop AFO as he was now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point we see the path Katsuki could have walked down and chose not to. Maybe he would have become a villain if not for UA or maybe he would have become the hero version of AFO, pushing forward with himself at the front and disregarded the 'Extra' heroes on his stage to the top.
Tumblr media
But he was able to see his flaws and began taking steps to try and change. To grow up, to realize the world isn't a story that solely revolves around him and his desires. His apology to Izuku was the first big step he's tried to change and it allowed him to grow as a person or so the themes of the story is trying to tell us. 'But even then...he's still Katsuki Bakugou.
Tumblr media
Nothing But Absolute Victory. He doesn't go down, he makes sure there's no chance AFO can somehow make a physical comeback. He wants to make sure he gives his childhood rival, his fellow her and, a more recently 'earned' title his friend a better chance to do what he has to do
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I may not like him right now. Hell, I may not ever truly like Katsuki Bakugou but I will ALWAYS acknowledge a characters journey and growth if they truly try to change for the better. I'm sure many people will too.
But that shouldn't come at the cost of disregarding others paths that intersect with his own. Bakugou finished The Demon Lord off, but he didn't do it alone. I think his acknowledgement of that says more about his growths than many of the 'fans' I've seen concerning these last recent chapters.

Ok so idk if you're still in as much of a hawks kick as I still am but I had this cute dream about him early this morning and I thought I'd share:
So in it hawks meets a single mom (who had an owl quirk I think) one day and she's walking down the street and baby drops something but she doesn't notice and being the good person he is hawks swoops down and picks it up for her they talk for a bit and then since it was late he walked her home. Now in this the young mom was actually struggling financially and lived in a rough area so at some point hawks starts to fly around her neighborhood every now and then to make sure she'll be safe and as they became friends he'd buy basic things for her & baby and he would help her to realize it's ok to accept help so she could focus on her self a bit- the rest of the details are a bit fuzzy but i also remember sometimes mama owl would invite him in for dinner or holidays and just keigo being an important member to her little family
Omg, this is so sweet, and incredibly relatable to me, personally - especially the part about accepting help and taking time for self-care. 🥺
Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I've definitely fallen off my Hawks kick considerably, but that's due to a whole lot of factors and it's not any one person or group's fault for that. He's still so special to me and I continue to encourage his fans in their enjoyment of him; I just unfortunately don't really have time for it in my own personal life anymore, but that's okay with me.
The fact that your dream was so in-character and he was also accepted as part of that Mama's family in return makes me so happy to have heard it.

Are there any companions you can't stand?
I wouldn't say I have any that I can't stand. Something that's so engaging to me about DA is that the companions have good, bad, and a lot in between. Honestly, I don't hate any of them. There are companions that I have more issues with than others, but I like them all; even, and sometimes especially, the ones that tend to be heavily hated on by the fandom.
The only companion that might fall into this category for me is Sebastian, but I totally acknowledge that I've yet to make an effort to use him when I play DA2. I legit just forget about him. How am I supposed to have a good grasp of his character when I don't engage with him outside of his companion quests? Plus I usually romance Anders so Sebastian always leaves my party in the end with threats of bringing an army down on Kirkwall for not killing Anders, soooo... yeah. Not the greatest impression he's left me with.
I would like to have a more well-rounded opinion of Sebastian because the concept of him is interesting; he's this chantry brother who is also a prince, but his family was murdered so he puts up a bounty on the chantry board [which admittedly is SO funny] and his companion quests are about avenging his family and helping him decide if he should take back his lands or remain a chantry brother. But then I talk to him, I listen to him talk to the other companions, and it's like... oh, the chantry has become his entire personality because the dude was brainwashed and now he's saying shit like the maker was actually the one who freed Fenris from slavery, and when Fenris tells him a story about how Denarius killed a child in a ritual for more power, Sebastian just doubles down that the maker has his reasons, like....babe, c'mon now.
I feel like I've read pieces about him written by fans who love him that are more compellingly written than he is, if that makes sense. Really, I would love to be educated by those who love him, especially Sebastian romancers because of all the love interests in all of DA, he's the one I look at and go, "....okay but why?" I have a lot of fun with character discussions and other perspectives so I mean that sincerely.
Also I think it's worth noting that when I play, I tend to get super into the roleplay of my warden/hawke/inquisitor, but while they have party members they can't stand, I have opinions that are separate from them, y'know?
For example, since I've talked about it a lot recently, my mage Hawke and Aveline butt heads constantly. By the end of Act 3, they're rivalry is heated and Ed's surprised Aveline even sided with him in the end because THAT is how much their relationship deteriorated over the course of the game... but then there's my warrior Hawke who adored Aveline. The two of them were best friends and Aris always gave her the benefit of the doubt, like she had Aveline's back through and through.
I've complained about Aveline a lot in my posts so it probably does sound like I can't stand her, but that's not true. Aveline's actually a companion that fascinates me, like she makes me go, "God, you're such an asshole, tell me more right now." and it drives me crazy how she and Carver are foils, like I love it so much, I could go on and on about how foiled they are, it makes me want to bite something.
It's very easy to look at Aveline and think she's just a bitch, she's a cop, she's a bad character, #Aveline-critical, bad companion, etc. I see it all the time, and not just with her, but with every companion in dragon age, y'know? I'm not saying that's wrong or anything; some characters just don't vibe with you or you have legit reasons for hating them and that's fine. I'm just saying some of it's very surface level unless you make the effort to elaborate.
If you don't like a character, you're less likely to make an effort to understand or see anything positive about them. You're more likely to have confirmation bias, so whenever they do or say anything, you go looking for the worst interpretation. I try not to do this just because for me, that's the "boring" approach to games like this but as we've seen, I'm not immune either... y'know, Sebastian.
But Carver gets this a lot, too, and I think I've made myself clear that Carver is my favorite, I love him, the Hawke twins are S-tier companions and I would throw everyone in Kirkwall into the ocean if it meant Bethany and Carver's happiness.
Now that I'm thinking about it, the characters a lot of fans can't stand are some of my favorites?
Like a lot of people shit on Sera, and I'm like "Nah, that's my girl! Listen, she's got a LOT of internalized issues, but we're working through them okay! She's getting better!"
And Vivienne? Oh, don't get me started on Vivienne, I have a whole deal about her. She's also an asshole and I love her.
My canon inquisitor is Surana who escaped the circle and joined the dalish, becoming Lavellan. Vivienne is a reflection of what Ash could've been if she hadn't run away with Jowan. She played the game of the circle, she stepped wherever she needed to step because Ash knew she was at a disadvantage by being an elf, for one, and for two, not coming from a family with wealth that would give her special privileges. Her downfall was buying into her own hype and believing she couldn't be wrong about Jowan, believing that she could either prevent them from making him tranquil or help him and Lily run away, and believing she was above punishment because she worked her way into being Irving's favorite. Yet it all bit her in the ass and she had to run… so then years later after living outside of the circle and realizing just what the chantry is, how it conditions and abuses mages and shit, she meets Vivienne who also played the game well and came out on top, who now spouts the same shit Ash used to spout and it's makes their dynamic sooo chewable.
Then there's Cullen who's not a companion but I lump him and Josephine in with the companions anyway. They're advisors, they're in the inner circle, they count.
He's such a spineless ass in DA2 like believe me, I get all the criticisms he gets... but he's also fairly polite to Hawke even if they're openly anti-templar, he's softer spoken, and he's unwell after what happened to him in DAO and Meredith's clearly taking advantage of his state... but then he becomes an advisor in DAI who is so done with people's bullshit and blatantly honest about it, like he looks at Chancellor Roderick like "this fucking guy again" and he's so ready to just go for it, y'know? Well... unless you're a pretty lady who bats her eyes at him, then suddenly he doesn't know how words work. Like sometimes I feel crazy because I find him to be so funny in DAI, and overall a compelling character that I enjoy interacting with even when he's being a total asshole. Yeah, there's issues in his writing but I appreciate the vision the writers were going for, even if they stumbled... except for Sheryl Chee, I don't appreciate her contribution of those few posts on the DA forums that everyone uses as a smoking gun to "prove" awful things about him. Nothing gets under my skin more in character discussions than bad faith arguments and there's so much of that when it comes to Cullen.
Actually, while we're on that, can I just add a note that when I first got into this fandom, I saw someone's post about Chee doing an interview where she said all those bad things about Cullen wanting to assault the mage warden and I was like, "What? An interview? What interview?? Where??" and I couldn't find shit until much later when I read another anti-Cullen post that cited a DA forum as the source for her saying those things... so not an interview. I went digging for the forum, went into the way back machine to find it.... only to discover that this smoking gun comes from a fanfiction forum where Mary Kirby was also talking about Sten and catgirls and y'all expect me to take that seriously?
We can have discussions about whether or not Cullen's a bad person or a bad character, but the moment you bring Sheryl Chee into it, I know you're here in bad faith and your argument is void.
Sorry for the tangent and the long answer but this is the stuff I enjoy. I could talk about the characters of DA for ages unprompted that when someone does throw me a bone, I will discuss and gush about them all.
#asks#dragon age#dao#da2#dai#sebastian vael#aveline vallen#carver hawke#dai sera#cullen rutherford#vivienne de fer#i have to stop myself before i go on tangents about morrigan and wynne and anders and isabela and merrill and dorian and varric and-#literally everyone sksksks i can't help it#also on the flip side of this type of discussion i also love looking at characters that most people adore and discussing their flaws#like i love alistair he's my favorite companion in dao BUT it's easy to forgot that he can be just as petty and selfish too y'know?#if you don't execute loghain he can straight up just abandon you and leave and you'll find him in da2 as a drunk like... babe really left#and let you deal with the blight because he was so blinded by revenge and thirst for loghain's death and that's not great??#not really something that gets brought up because it's unflattering it's an ugly part of his character but it's there mingling with the goo#and if you have a good relationship with him but don't know how he'll react when you spare loghain that can be devastating too#but it's also super understandable WHY he reacts like that WHY he leaves even if it's a selfish move on his part and hurts you#i dunno i think sometimes we're scared to talk about the ugly parts of our favorite characters because we love them#and don't want them to be wrong especially in fandom with a lot of pissing matches and bad faith arguments y'know?#i dunno this is my spiel of the night: i love all my companions except sebastian who is just a character that exists to me#i wasn't joking when i said i'd like to be enlighted about sebby and his romance like....... explain elaborate educate

HAWKS DIDN’T WANT TO BE A HERO HE JUST WANTED TO BE LIKE HIS SURROGATE DAD OK? HIS STORY ISN’t SUPERCOOL SPY SHIT OR BREAKING THE SYSTEM IT’S ABOUT HIM WANTING TO BE A CERTAIN SOMEONE’S SPECIAL BOY AND HAVE A FAMILY AND LIVE FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO LOVE HIM AND SEE HIM AND THAT HE LOVES. Oh to be the perfect imperfect son with a perfect imperfect family trying its best to go into the future just like he is… oh to have a little brother that is the “hero of the family”, oh to have a mother who is doing her best to really see her son and make amends with her kids instead of running away…
