Welcome to my Mega Problematic Sylvie post
I wanted to make a list of everything problematic about Sylvie in s1 and s2 because she gets away with whatever she wants and it bugs me to no end that she never takes accountability for any of the pain she causes.
You have been warned. So let's get into it.
Tumblr media
1. Sylvie’s way is the only way and she expects everyone else to just bend to her will without complaint
Tumblr media
2. She is physically mentally and emotionally incapable of trusting anyone besides herself
Tumblr media
3. She uses other people's emotions to manipulate them into getting what she wants
Tumblr media
4. She refuses to even entertain the possibility that anything besides her own opinion is correct
Tumblr media
5. She criticizes others' attempts to clean up the mess she caused while she herself does absolutely nothing about it
Tumblr media
6. Always looking to ruin and run, taking the easy way out and avoiding any accountability
Tumblr media
7. Puts her own need for revenge above the well-being of everyone else in the multiverse
Tumblr media
8. Blames everyone else for the problems she herself caused
Tumblr media
9. Insults everyone at the TVA for their lack of empathy despite it being the exact reason she didn't want to return in the first place. Every critique she delivers just illustrates how much of a hypocrite she is
Tumblr media
10. Berates Mobius and all the people who are actually trying to fix her problem even though they never once blamed her for the mess they're in
Tumblr media
11. Acts like she's doing everyone a favor just for being there and insulting everyone when in reality, Loki had to ask multiple times before finally getting her to return
Tumblr media
12. Never willing to put in more effort than just destroying everything and walking away
Tumblr media
13. Even when directly asked for her help, Sylvie straight up refuses. She couldn't care less about anything besides her McDonald's employee-of-the-month badge
Tumblr media
14. Sylvie gaslights Loki into thinking they're the same, that she's not in the wrong because they're both only thinking of themselves. In reality, Sylvie is thinking only of going back to her own timeline, alone, while Loki is thinking only of making his friends happy, because that's what makes him happy too.
Tumblr media
15. While being completely unsympathetic to Loki struggling with his greatest fear, Sylvie makes the decision that Loki's friend's are all better off where they are now. But is it really better for them, or just better for Sylvie?
Tumblr media
16. And now, after 11 episodes and countless requests for Sylvie's help, she actually cares about the rest of the multiverse. And yet it's still solely because her own timeline is finally in danger
Tumblr media
17. When Loki ends up sacrificing himself to solve the problem Sylvie created, her only response is a joyful shrug that she's now happy, alone, and responsibility-free.
Overall, I know Sylvie's only purpose as a character is to be a darker mirror of Loki and everything she does is understandably informed by her trauma. This is likely a result of having a limited-episode-series and having all male/not diverse writers creating female characters. Sylvie is used only as a comparison to Loki before he met Mobius, and unfortunately is never given any thoughtful character moments like Loki had showing how he was aware that his actions hurt others. In 1x1, Loki talks about how he doesn’t enjoy hurting people and only does it to maintain control. The only time we ever see Sylvie reconsider her actions is when she didn’t kill Timely, which I think is more because she saw herself in Timely as someone who didn’t want to be controlled by their ‘destiny,’ not because she developed any kindness or compassion toward him.
I understand the fact that Sylvie was never given someone like Mobius to allow her the opportunity to change like Loki did, but I don't think that should excuse her causing so much pain and being so self-centered. Sylvie never trusted or cared about anyone and that's also my biggest argument against Sylki; her loving or being driven by anyone besides herself is just so inconsistent with her entire character.
Anyway, my purpose here was not to be hateful or to search for any reason to criticize Sylvie, but instead to look critically at her character since I've seen a lot of people praise her as the strong, independent female Loki whose behavior can always be forgiven. Unfortunately, the way she was written is that Sylvie turned her own trauma into everybody else's problem and they all spent 2 seasons trying to clean up her mess. That's my take thank you and goodnight

people fr are like "do you expect Loki to always be in armour? 🤨" and I'm here to answer that Yes! Yes I do! In fight situations, at the very least! Take a look at Thor! Take a look at Loki in Thor 1! Or either of them in Avengers 1! Or even - dare I say - Thor 2! Loki's got LOTS of outfits, switching pieces between them and across scenes, even. He goes through the most outfit changes, and they were all cool and detailed and suited to the situations! Even when not armour! So Yes! I either expect him to reflect such bombardment of clothing in the series as well (within bounds of what is reasonable) or armour when he's fighting. Or at the very least for him to be wearing some green.
#'why is it BROWN' 'omg you can't just ask why it's brown...' 'ok. why is he working with the timeline brainwashing genocide fascists?' 'um'#the Loki show#is the mcu for real like we're not going to put loki in his signature colours in a show with his name on it#what kind of clownery#my dude he was in green when he was in a cell on asgard#he got away from thanos in green - albeit hastily modified and a bit worn down - armour#bestie he didn't don a single horned helm in the entire season#my guy that is not loki if he cannot summon a new outfit even when the exact topic is broached in a conversation#my friends please consider that he has inexplicably not been able to get a single dagger of his own to himself in the show#his magic looks like goop and is used twice maybe three times in the series#he calls enchanting an amateur thing and then 3 episodes later needs to be taught by Sylvie and struggles#WHAT IS GOING ON#Thor 1 is shaking in Loki's custom made baby seal leather boots rn#L-Loki can't even do mag-- I can't say it 🤢#THOR has recently done more actual proper magic than Loki#my goodness the lad can't even fight well#what happened to his ridiculously accurate dagger aim and the whole mastery of magic and whatnot#AND THEN THEY ALSO WON'T LET HIM HAVE DECENT CLOTHES?#im losing it#are we sure this is Loki? as in LOKI Loki?#''do you expect Loki to always be in armour'' NO BUT IT WOULD BE NICE FOR HIM TO RESEMBLE THE CHARACTER#don't tell me it's Loki being out of his element he did that in Thor 1 Avengers 1 Thor 2 Thor 3 and Infinity War already#don't tell me they needed to strip him down to build him back up. Thor went through that in Thor 1 and it was respectful#it's not even that it's office wear that bothers me it's that it's BORING office it's unsuited to the character#his whole thing is breaking boxes what do you mean he's worn grey and brown the entire show#Wanda got a glow up and Sam got a glowup and Kate and Clint got new fits#man... Loki got a glow down#and that's saying a LOT since he started the series at the end of Avengers 1 after Thanos and getting beat by the Hulk/Avengers#if Loki being a good guy means everyone keeps calling him evil and he's gotta dress down and get beat up constantly... let him be a bad guy#he's literally got nothing to lose here but a shirt that will expose every blood vessel in his abdomen if attacked with 1 glass of water

b-15’s concern for c-20. b-15 taking sylvie to an apocalyptic event to learn the truth. b-15 telling sylvie to enchant her, let her see the life before the TVA. b-15 saying “i looked happy” as the rain of a hurricane pours down on the two of them. b-15 bursting into the timekeeper’s chamber with sylvie’s sword so they could fight off the people she just learned had been lying to her, had taken her life from her. many thoughts.

Loki season 2 spoiler !!
Ok but man if Mobius can choose between stayed with loki and return to his real life he was just choosing Loki
And I found that horrible that je can't just choose, because we all know that wasn't the things he want to have to just going in this life
And Loki know this too, I things that also why he want him to come back, because she know that Mobius didn't want that
(Also because she want his friends back but you know I found this logically too)

Okay ONE more Loki post. I liked Sylvie in s1, genuinely! She was dynamic and interesting, the banter between her and Loki was on point, etc.
But then they toned down the makeup and the hairspray so she's a little less polished and gave her a small life she loves with nice coworkers and a favorite record shop. and I LOVE her
#loki spoilers#i mean yeah i think they should have let her look wrinklier and odder <3#but i can admit i'm the one watching a marvel show#if that's what i want i have come to the wrong place#anyway listen i keep seeing people say she's so selfish and she's not growing#i think that she IS selfish and she IS growing and i LOVE her#yeah it looks like she'll probably get pulled into needing to save the world one more time#(she *might* not but that's another essay i'm not gonna get into)#but i hope so bad that she gets to return to the life she loves after that#loki has been building a life with his friends and that's lovely#but the tva persecuted sylvie her entire life#*loki's friends* did that#and yes they've changed!! yes sylvie is plenty flawed too!!#but a life with them isn't the way forward that she wants#and that's okay#after all#what's so terrible about wanting something?#loki is allowed#and so is she#plus i just. god with cosmic powers who just wants to be allowed a normal life in freedom. without wielding power over anyone.#it GETS to me!!#also if Loki does end up being part of leading the TVA#so that you have one of them learning how to wield power well#and the other learning to give it up#that makes for a two sides of the same coin that i find very satisfying#(granted i for various reasons would prefer burning the TVA to the ground and loki also relinquishing power#but my guess at this point is that they won't go that way with it#which i suppose isn't surprising since it's a good tool to have in their back pocket for the films)#anyway#i love sylvie <3

i’m sorry i’m going on another rant but this ship enrages me; i think they should be besties, not romantically in love. that’s how i originally read it, and i hope the show backtracks a little bit and makes that real, because they do NOT need to have romantic feelings for each other. like it seemed like they were just trying to figure out how to CARE about others, not like they were in love. i think they have deep platonic love for one another, but i see no reason that it needs to be/ should be romantic?? i think they’re both just trying to figure out how to express that for each other, and they’re really awkward about it, so it ends up being expressed a bit weirdly. i really really hope s2 does this narrative and they don’t end up as a couple. it just doesn’t feel right.
idc about the selfcest or whatever bc they’re completely different characters. the actors even have some chemistry, but i just do not like this ship as romantic, i see them as friends. i’m curious to see as well if sylvies feelings were genuine, or if she was trying to manipulate loki to get what she wants. i hope they can be friends without the writers/directors ruining it and making them actually fall in love.
taken from a quora response (i know i hate that site too but this reply really made sense):
“I glanced at the other answers and everyone seems pretty sure that they are madly in love. I have to say I disagree.
The Loki we know has truly experienced trauma throughout his life. He was basically abducted as a baby for lack of a better term, lied to, etc etc. He doesn't trust people. I would go as far as to say he doesn't even put any effort into liking them. As much as I do believe he loves Thor, it is a love-born out of initial obligation. I think that loving/caring about anyone outside of your immediate family is always different. And that the first time you do it, it has a learning curve. What a lot of people read as soft loving romantic feelings, I read as Loki slowly lowering walls.
I think that at the moment when Mobius was pruned, Loki truly was heartbroken, because he considered him an ally and a friend. Possibly his first. Imagine not having a single friend in a thousand years. After having that kick ass fight, working with Sylvie against the minutemen, he grabs her shoulders, I don't think he was going to dip her and kiss her. Ala a Peggy/Steve or Tony Pepper moment. Or declare her his one true love.
I think he was going to declare that he trusted her and that he wanted to fight alongside her. He was going to tell her everything that she missed, everything that he thought they should do next. He was fully prepared to do the same thing with Mobius, He just never got the chance. He's never known how to trust someone and now he did. And in his mind the first part of that is declaring it. Declaring that you aren't trying to betray that person despite it kind of being your calling card.
Could I see a romantic relationship in the distant future? Maybe? Everyone seems to look at the variant thing differently. To me none of the variants are the same. They look different, they act different, they were raised different, and they don't even appear to have the same genes. Literally twins are more similar than the variants. A lot of people are also saying that him caring for her is similar to him accepting himself because they share so many traits. But that is a kind of relationship that can be found in a person who isn't your trans-dimensional variant. Oftentimes our best friends, our platonic soulmates, are people that we see ourselves in the most.
There's a quote that I don't remember exactly. But it goes something like, “You will find that in your life there are people who will know your soul from the inside out and the great tragedy is that these are rarely the people you spend your life with." I thought of that quote several times when I was watching the last episode.
I personally really like Sylvie as a standalone character, and at this point I'm just hoping that she lives to move on in the next phase of movies. Because honestly, I like Tom Hiddleston, it would be cool for him to have a romantic relationship with anybody. But more than anything I'd love to see him in his mischievous glory with a best friend egging him on.”

Thor knowing that their family is terrible and hurt them both but still asking Loki to return to it because it's what they have
#like you think Thor doesn't know he's hurt Loki?#you think he doesn't know that their parents did?#Thor refuses to let their family go because his role is what gives him worth the same way as it did for Loki#it's harder for him to let it go because it's a decision he would have to consciously make#and things are better for him as a prince of Asgard than they ever were for Loki (he has Odin's favour. is the heir/son by blood. is liked.#Thor has a lot more to lose than Loki did#Loki didn't have to refuse the family because he found out he was lied to and the decision was made for him#he wasn't liked and didn't have Odin's favour or a special weapon or friends or an official role to grow into#Frigga can say she's his mother and Odin can claim whatever he wants but it's just a reminder of what he no longer has#Loki relatively had a lot less to lose on Asgard but it made up the entirety of what Loki had because it separated him from. everything.#he let go on the Bifrost because there was quite literally nothing left for him there or that he wanted and could have#when Loki got cut off he didn't have any guarantee that his brother would side with him and... Thor probably wouldn't have#but if THOR decides to leave their home behind after Loki's death he would have been siding with Loki and would've been the one cutting awa#Thor has a choice in staying a family because he can suck it up to Odin and Frigga and is unable to comprehend that Loki doesn't have that#from Thor's perspective Loki is the one who is rejecting their home by not playing nice and returning#Loki's the one who will be rejecting their home if he faces consequences for attacking Midgard or sits in a cell for his whole life#because Thor thinks Loki can just make the same decision he does by simply staying loyal to Asgard and keeping complaints to himself#that's the way the family worked before anyway so Loki not *wanting* to go back to that is a betrayal. and for what?#from Thor's point of view Loki is stubbornly refusing to return to Asgard and gain everything he lost#he doesn't understand that the only thing Loki was given a choice in losing was his brother and that he never reached a decision about it#Loki betrays Thor and hopes he dies before any judgement is passed but calls him brother and hopes Thor gets the throne. like. what a mess.#Loki works with Frigga and Thor against what Odin/Asgard has decreed until you bring up that they're a family where he shuts down#if Thor works against Odin/Asgard but doesn't feel the need to separate that from the fact they're family so he doesn't#he doesn't see that Loki is incapable of doing the same because it's Odin/Asgard that already rejected/betrayed *him*#there was never enough on Asgard for Loki to want to return or seek forgiveness for when he was the one hurt/who lost it all#he cares for Frigga and Odin regardless of them not being his parents and cares for Thor because there's really nothing else for him#Thor didn't reject him and he didn't lie to him about his race/lineage but telling him to come home like he still has that is cruel#because Loki thinks that Thor knows there's nothing he has on Asgard and Thor thinks Loki's side doesn't need to be considered#family hurts and lies and betrays and judges you and Thor's accepted it because feelings don't matter when family is what it is#tldr; bold to assume that Thor's got any better idea of what love or healthy relationship is meant to look like than Loki
