Letter from our CEO
I would like to begin by saying thank you to the many people who have written in via email, through our DMs, or on social media expressing their support, understanding, and compassion as KnitCrate navigates this situation. Whenever we receive one of those messages, we share it internally with the rest of the team, and it helps boost morale and remind us why we enjoy being a part of this community. So again, THANK YOU.
The situation over the past year has been, well…to say it has been messy would be an understatement. The lack of inventory being in stock (particularly in the last 3 months), delayed shipments, and customers understandably being more budget-conscious with the uncertainties of the pandemic have all strongly impacted our sales as a company. We have been doing whatever we can to overcome it. One of the biggest challenges we’ve dealt with as a company during COVID-19 has been our supply chain, both with getting the yarn to our warehouse for kit assembly and for production of the yarn in the first place.
Issue 1: Logistics of receiving the yarn
There are two main problems affecting companies who rely on importing/exporting goods these days.
The first is that, due to COVID, there are less commercial flights. Almost all commercial flights carry the passengers up top and cargo down below. With less commercial flights, there is less opportunity to transport cargo. This causes a backlog of cargo sitting at the airports. For example, we paid our mill in mid-March to try to get what should have been the April yarn now in March (paying it a month ahead of what was planned in our budget), at which point they sent the cargo to the airport in Lima.  The cargo sat there for over a week because of the backlog of other cargo waiting to be put on a plane.  The airline finally delivered 3 pallets to the US on March 30th.  The remaining 9 pallets arrived today on March 31st.  Customs wouldn’t let us pick up the first 3 pallets until the other 9 arrived, because they wanted us to pick up the order in its entirety. We finally got clearance to pick it up earlier today.
The second issue companies are facing are capacity constraints at the ports, whether airports or ocean. All ports worldwide are working with far less employees than they were before the pandemic, which causes massive delays in being able to process shipments. This affects us with our large inbound orders but also with shipments to our international customers, as packages sometimes sit at customs in your countries for what may seem to be an eternity.
Issue 2: Production of yarn at the mills
Because of the volume of yarn we are now ordering monthly, we have to contract with our mills 12+ months in advance. For example, as of today, all yarn orders through March 2022 are already contracted. Why the long 12-month lead time? The mills need this amount of lead time to plan their own raw materials purchases and production schedules, not just for our orders, but the orders of all their clients. Every month, we pay our mill at the time of shipment, they proceed to ship the yarn to us. Under normal circumstances, it takes a shipment by air only 1-3 business days to arrive, clear customs, and be delivered to our warehouse.  Outside of a worldwide pandemic, this is not usually an issue. The mills have plenty of time to produce yarn and deliver it the first week of each month when we need to assemble your kits and ship to you.
However, the COVID pandemic has complicated things. Both of our main mills in Peru and Italy have had periods of time where they outright closed due to government restrictions on non-essential businesses to help combat the spread of COVID in their respective countries. For example, in April/May of 2020, our Peruvian mill was closed for two months and that left us without yarn to send out in May. Due to the lead times required and the fact that most mills worldwide were (and still are) facing similar issues, looking for alternate yarn was nearly impossible. Thankfully, our team was quick on their feet and we put together a fun dye-it-yourself project using undyed yarn from our Dyer Supplier business.
During this first quarter of 2021, our Italian mill, who was originally supplying yarn from December through February, has been facing stringent lockdowns and closures in response to the recent increase in COVID cases in Italy. This disrupted their ability to produce yarn and has resulted in part of the January yarn and all of the planned February yarn not being delivered. We were horribly disappointed about this, but despite our best efforts as well as the mill’s, the production needs could not be met. Thankfully, our Peruvian mill has been able to come back online with a more regular schedule in the past few months, and we have been working with them to get yarn delivered now that was originally meant for a later month.
While this is a solution to the inventory needed for crate shipment, it presented the company with a new problem. We had to fund the purchase for this yarn outside of our budget and available funding, which has been difficult during a challenging and financially straining year. This is why we have been forced to issue a credit, as opposed to an outright refund, on those purchases. It would be impossible for the company to do both - issue a refund for all those orders at one time while allocating funds to pay for yarn ahead of time.
***
Does this situation absolutely suck? Yes. It absolutely sucks. Am I sorry that this is happening? Of course. Business owners who give a damn about their business, customers, and employees do not set out on a mission to disappoint customers or give a less-than-exceptional experience. It is more heartbreaking to me than I can explain. But we aren’t dealing with normal times. We are doing what we need to do to get the company through this temporary situation to keep delivering yarn each month, keep our team members employed, and continue to be the business so many of you have grown to love.
Unfortunately, this also means streamlining how we offer products to you as well as increasing prices. When we took over KnitCrate in mid-2016, the kits ranged in price between $45 to $65 USD. We lowered those prices significantly to $24.99, including shipping & handling, that same year. We have kept prices there since then, even though shipping costs and wool prices have skyrocketed over the past 4-5 year period.  Keeping our prices that low could not continue indefinitely. We had plans to introduce these price increases later in the year, but this situation has forced us to accelerate those changes. However, even at the new prices, we still feel there is superb value for the yarn you are receiving. Moreover, you still have access to the member discounts in the shop which gives you even more value.
I am hoping that most customers know us well enough to understand that we aren’t trying to pull a fast one or go Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on you. We would never turn into a completely different company who is out to take advantage of you. However, we recognize that these sudden changes and issues have understandably raised concerns. Among them, there have been concerns raised about the products and website that we would like to clarify:
Our Terms and Conditions have not changed since 2019 and our Privacy Policy hasn’t changed since 2017.
We will continue to include 2 skeins per crate for the traditional membership and 1 for the sock membership. The “1+ skeins” wording previously seen on the website was updated back in 2019 when we tested featuring 1 skein of ultra-luxury base in the months we featured Citrus Squeeze and Titmouse. We subsequently sent a survey to our customers asking how they would like us to approach this in the future. The answer was that the majority preferred two skeins, and so we have featured at least two skeins ever since and will continue to do so.
We had seen some comments regarding extras no longer being included in kits. Please rest assured that extras will continue being a part of your kits.
Member Central discounts, Double Down discounts, etc. will continue. These are some of the key benefits of being a member and will continue to be so.
I have come across some hard-to-read comments about how KnitCrate is going out of business or won’t be around in 2 months. Are we going through a tough situation? Yes. That is no secret. Are we disappearing in 2 months? No. Like I said above, the yarn is contracted out through March 2022 with our Peruvian mill. This mill has already come back online and is working with us to push every month contract up by 30 days. We are working overtime and making the necessary changes to get things back on track and get the shipping schedule normalized again.
Ultimately, whether KnitCrate, or any company for that matter, stays in business or not is always in the hands of the customers. Companies can die for many reasons, but there are two overarching reasons.
The company cannot deliver a product the customer wants. The company created a product the customer wants and is willing to pay for, but the company cannot access or deliver it to the customer.
The company cannot get customers. The company developed a product a customer doesn’t care for and isn’t willing to pay for and they go out of business.
As a company, we have predominantly been battling Reason #1 during the pandemic and are actively working on solutions within our team and with our partner mills to address the supply chain issues.  Given that our Peruvian mill was able to finish the April yarn by mid-March and ship to us early, we are looking forward to working with them on the future orders already contracted as we bump up each of those months.  Going forward, we will not be pre-selling yarn on the shop.  Yarn will only be listed for sale once it has been received into our warehouse, quality controlled, and counted. We understand that this may upset some customers who liked the ability to reserve the yarn by pre-buying it, but it is a necessary action.
That leaves us with Reason #2, and this is entirely in your hands as a customer. We offer great products, great value, and fair prices not available in most places.  In fact, I encourage anyone who has been a member with us for a long time to look at the yarn they have purchased through us over their lifetime as a customer, either through the kits or in Member Central, and tally up the savings they have earned. I don’t know many other places that can enable you to save on quality yarn as much as KnitCrate.
When it comes to business, the customer is always in charge. You vote with your dollars whether any company you buy from, including KnitCrate, stays in business or not. This is not new, though. This has always been the case, ever since we took over the company in 2016, and will always be the case. We have had to make some tough decisions during a temporarily very sh!tty situation. We made those decisions in order to stay alive and keep delivering yarn to you at affordable prices long into the future. If you will have us, we will be here working to bring you yarn with great projects at great prices.
Thank you for your support. We hope you stay well and keep stitchin’!
- Rob and the KnitCrate Team

•Under The Red Sky•
Chapter 2. Arrangements
About and hour and a half had past since Alastor handed out the phone books. Charlie called many somewhat suitable places to host a dance but everyone she called declined and mocked her over the phone. At some point Alastors nerves were tested by this disrespect. He found it annoying that no one gave her a chance but then again he didn't really believe her either. All he was there for was a good time, something to soothe his boredom and maybe something extra only if it turns out demons can be rehabilitated. Alastor was snapped out of his thoughts when Husk piped up over at the bar.
"Ugh why are we even doing this no one cares about a stupid dance unless theirs drugs, alcohol or money involved." Husk grumbled.
Just then Nifty jumped up from where she was sitting and smacked Husk lightly. "STOP It! that's not the spirit besides i know someone we can call."
Charlie's attention was definitely grabbed by this, "Who is it?"
"Well she's a friend of Alastors they're quite close so i think she'll be able to hook us up huh Ally!" Nifty rejoiced as she jumped up and down and zoomed around Alastor.
Als smile stretch as he tried to hold back laughter. "Pffft... HAHAHAhah that's a good one you little devil you, there's no way in hell-
"Uhhuh, uhuh, uhhh oh okay so in three days you'll have a place for us? Great! Alastor sends his regards. Thank you!" Charlie ended the call as quickly as Nifty cut Alastor off. "So in three days she'll have a room open for us to host the dance."
"Wha-but wait how- did you- well that's perplexing." Alastor thought to himself, Rosie would never let the princess anywhere near her business. Why in the world would she ever say yes?
"I can't believe you knew someone and you didn't tell me?" Charlie asked as she crossed her arms and he expression turned sad for a moment.
A radio crack came through not before Al shook his head, "No no my dear Rosie can be tough to negotiate with she's not one to accept an offer from such a.. um well undesirable place such as this hotel."
Charlie openeded her mouth to say something but Angel got to it first, "So this means we're gonna need beverages right? WELL i'm off to get alcohol byeee!!!" Angel blurted out as he got up and sped out the door.
"HEY ANGEL NO ALCOHOL YOu idiot!!" Vaggie sighed as she muttered that she'll get him and with that she ran out the door after Angel.
"Ugh" Charlie grumbled as she pinched the space between her eyes just above her nose. "Okay well i guess i'll find a way to get the snacks an-"
"Oh no no no dear that won't be necessary, i'm sure i can find a way to get us something up to Rosies taste." Al said as he pondered how he could get something for the party without needlessly paying for it.
"Wait are you sure i can help you out i am the one hosting the party." Charlie offered with a smug smile.
"Ah i think you mean co hosting i am your business partner after all. No but it won't be needed my darling you can go off and tend to other needs while i take care of it." Al noticed her face soften it made a little radio static crackle through as his smile widened. "Anyways i'll see what i can do my dear." He said as he spun to the door.
Charlie smiled fondly as she watched him exit the hotel. It was confusing why he wanted to help but she deeply appreciated the little things he did just for the hotel and supposedly for his entertainment. She shook her head, "I might as well pick something out to wear."
Vaggie went running down the sidewalk after Angel, "Hey shitlord stop for a goddamn second!"
"Oh so you did follow me then huh?" Angel said as he turned around and stopped with a big smile on his face.
"Yeah ofcourse i- wait did you run out just to get me to follow you?" Vaggie asked out of breath as she caught up to him.
"Well yes and no i did wanna go and gets some booze ya know for ma own purposes but i wanted to talk to you about something." Angel continued as they walked down the street towards the liquor store.
"And what's that." Vaggie said while crossing her arms thinking he was about to make a sex joke or something.
"What do you think similes' game is at the hotel?" He asked with a genuine face of somewhat concern.
Vaggie was surprised by this her eyes widened, she didn't think anyone was suspicious of him other than her. "Honestly i don't know, it could be anything. To tarnash the hotel, to make fun of us, or maybe something even worse."
"What could he do if this whole uh rehabilitation thing were true- well um i mean since it is true." Angel stuttered watching what he said to not upset Vaggie.
Vaggie furrowed her brow in annoyance, "An overlord is hard to read especially the radio demon himself is a whole other story. I know for one thing there's no way he could just be here because he's bored." She said as she bent her fingers into air quotes.
"Idk this place gives me a laugh sometimes! HA" Angel laughed as Vaggie punched him hard in the arm.
Back at the hotel Charlie was deciding what she was gonna wear and what the theme should be. Obviously she decided for it to be Classy since Rosie is an overlord and they tend to have pretty high standards. A tux might be too casual for her since she wears one everyday pretty much, a dress would probably empress and give her a little bit more respect if she can turn heads for a good reason.
Charlie reached into the back of her closet for the dress she wore for her family portrait about a 100 or so years ago. Upon pulling it out a little bit of dust smoked off of it so she patted it down all while coughing. "This should do!" Charlie said with a smile as she went to go change into it.
Once Alastor was out the door he used his shadow ability to pretty much teleport himself directly to Rosies emporium recently was Franklin and Rosie but shamefully the cleansing took Franklin with many other sinful demons. Rosies business is more of like a fashion business her entire building is like one big store with the exception of a ware house with a run way to promote her new designs and outfits she has to sell. Rosie was a type of demon that loves luxury. Her soothing voice with a devilish white sharp smile and sense of fashion says it all.
Alastor teleported to Rosies room within the building. Rosie seemed to have expected him as she was sitting in a velvet chair in the corner of the room with a large smile present on her face. The lights were off which made the void that was her eyes seem even more absent.
"So my dear Rosie why did you accept the damsels cry?" Alastor asked as he spun his radio staff and tapped it on the ground. "Not up to anything devious now are we?" He said truly curious as to why she'd let anyone she didn't know near her business.
"What me oh no no that couldn't ever be me, i just want the publicity. Business honey that's all i need from this." Rosie laughed as she stood and gazed out her window towards the hotel across town. "I mean i have a front row seat, isn't that what you're doing there sugar." Rosie questioned with a smug face.
A crackle sifted through the air as Alastor spoke, "Perhaps my dear but this endeavor has turned out to be quite fun on the contrary, why i've never had this many laughs just watching the sad sap of a hotel crumble." An audio track laugh played behind his voice as he spoke but speaking badly upon charlie's hotel for someone reason made him feel uncomfortable.
Rosie chuckled, "No no i mean what do you really want, i know you Alastor and you never do anything without a reason or" she paused, "for mere boredom Ha." She turned from the window to face him, her shadow casting on his face as she stepped closer to him. "I know you already have a devilish plan brewing inside that head of yours."
Alastor stared at her with his wide smile, "Well if you so much desire to know i suppose i'll tell you."
Rosie leaned forward eager to hear what he was going to dish out.
"Only after the party just to make sure you'll stick to your word Rosie dear." Alastor mused as his crooked smile grew. Rosie laughed in response to this.
"You always were one to see a deal through. Oh and did that princess make a deal with you yet?" Rosie asked as Alastor went to turn around.
"No i'm afraid she's a lot smarter than i thought she's impressed me what can i say Rosie." Al smiled at the thought of how happy Charlie will be to host the party. A charming demon belle she is. "Anyways i best be on my way now i promised Charlie that i'd find a way to get her food for the party and-"
"Oh don't worry sugar i'll have it catered just for you and it'll be up to my taste." Rosie said with a little smirk upon her face as she laughed at the idea of non expensive foods being at the dance. "Consider this as you owe me one, fair enough Ally?"
Alastor furrowed his brow in annoyance he hated her little nickname she gave him Al was far better in his opinion. "Hmm lets make it a deal then." Al said as he leaned forward and extended his arm out to Rosie the green glow illuminating the room and wind seemingly gushing from its illumination. "And don't call me Ally, please." he said with a wide grin.
Rosie smiled softly as she took his hand and gently shook it. The green glow disappeared upon the shake a spark of green electricity swirled and then dissipated into thin air. "Pleasure doing business with you."
"The pleasures mine now if you'll excuse me the misses are expecting me." Al joked but Rosie didn't laugh she just smiled a knowing smile as he teleported back to the hotels front door.
"Hmm he seems a bit off" Rosie thought as she watched him disappear.
Alastor returned back to the hotel in what seemed like minutes though he didn't turn up with anything which may be a surprise to Charlie. But thanks to his shadow he can pretty much cross all the corners of hell in a mere minute at his fastest. This is probably what made him such a good hunter, stealthy and fast just like when he was still among the living he was very cunning. Al rembered his living life for a moment before the thought of the princess creeped into his head. He shook his old memories away and went on his way looking for Charlie.
"Charlie? Oh charlie?!" Al shouted as he crossed the main area of the hotel. "Hmm where has she gone to?" He thought to himself as he made his way up the stairs.
At the hotel everyone has their own room even Alastor has a room. Charlie set it up since she considered him a patron since he did approach her first after all and she found him quite enjoyable to have around. However Al hasn't slept over night in that room once, he has his own place across town so he doesn't see the need. But still the thought is what mattered the most to him, a symbol of their friendship so far and her trust to let an overlord like him sleep over in the same building as her. It made him laugh how naive she was but how nice she was.. she gives anyone a chance. Al smiled fondly at this thought and stopped in his tracks, a little crackle bliped through him. A sigh escaped him as he used his shadow to teleport to the top floor, better to not exhaust any energy.
Charlie's room which was at the top of the hotel, had a balcony and the best view of hell from what he's seen from the outside of the hotel. Al creeped up to the door, it was slightly open, he was about ready to knock but something caught his eye. He peered through the small crack to see golden locks held together by barb wire and a flowy skirt flowed beneath the hair. Al was dead silent as he watched her turn to face the mirror in front of her, giving him a better view of what she looked like from the front. Her skirt had overall straps over her shoulders and begin just below her chest. She wore a white and decorative long sleeve blouse underneath the black skirt. Her legs being the most noticeable, peered out from under the skirt at about knee length. Al was mesmerized by this show of beauty, he had no idea the princess could look so elegant.
Alastors arm was suspended in time hovering just beside the door ready to knock but something kept him from doing so. As he watched the princess more he grew more and more entranced by her flowy movements as she spun and danced in front of the mirror. She looked so happy. Just then radio blips and cracks disrupted the silence the static was somewhat musical and loud. The interferance he can't really control he never understood them but simply they're just attached to his feelings. Something Al could never come to realize or understand on his own.
Charlie(POV) stood in front of her mirror happy with how her old outfit looked. She gave herself a little spin just to see her skirt frilly up and then fall back down. She was even impressed with herself and how she did on her hair, she perfectly recreated the look she made for her old family portrait. Suddenly chills ran up Charlie's spine as loud radio cracks and static came from the door to her room.
"Shit, shit, shit turn off dammit!" Al whispered to himself and fumbled with his staff trying to make the noise shut off. The static lessened and quieted down a little bit the princess already heard him for sure. Al sighed away all his embarrassment still bearing a smile as he knocked on the door. "Charlie, it's me you're business partner! I'm back from my trip my dear!"
There was a pause before the door opened slowly and out peered Charlie's head around the corner. He face covered in a blush and it wasn't just her naturally pink cheeks giving off that affect. "Um how long were you standing there?" She asked as she averted her eyes from him.
"I-" Al stood with his eyes wide open, normally invading privacy was one of his strong suits but for some reason he felt bad for watching her without Charlie knowing. So he did the only thing he could think of. He lied pretty much. "Oh no don't worry darling i just got here." He reassured her.
Her face cleared as she let out a relaxed sigh and opened the door fully to reveal her whole outfit up close. Alastor stared at her for what seemed like an eternity before she got nervous again and looked away.
Charlie brushed a little strand of blond hair out of her face as she spoke. "So um, Al you know Rosie the best is this something that might impress."
Al stood still, still in a daze before slowly opening his mouth to deliver what he had to say. "Oh no it won't impress Rosie hardly any, she's one of the top fashion demons out there, I mean the stuff she wears is top notch!"
To this the lights in charlie's eyes dimmed as her smile turned into a frown. A crackle of static was heard, with something different happening this time it.. hurt? It pained him to see her frown.
"Uh no my dear i.. No i-i didn't mean it like that i-" Al stuttered, he didn't know what to say he humbled his words trying to say something to make her frown go away.
Charlie looked up and met his gaze not before turning away and putting her hand on the door. "No it's okay Al i don't expect to impress such a high and mighty demon anyway. It was worth a shot i guess."
The door slowly moved to shut but Al stuck his foot in between the door and the wall stopping it from closing. "Wait Charlie."
Charlie's head lifted quickly to see Al with what looked like a look of concern told only by his eye brows since all he ever did was smile but even that too looked stressed.
"If i must add.. I think you look wonderful and absolutely stinky. For what it's worth you've impressed me my dear and besides you're never fully dressed without a smile." Al spoke softly as the words left his mouth. Charlie was shocked by the sound of his voice, no radio filtered over it, it was clear and smoothe. She looked up at him and slowly her smile grew before she decided to make a daring move. She held out her hand like she was pressing it up against a flat wall.
Al looked at her perplexed before she took his hand and placed it flat against hers and then wrapped her thumb around his hand and his around her hand. "I know you don't liked to be touched so i'll give you a hug this way."
Alastor was at a complete loss for words, his hand touching hers gave him a sick feeling to his stomach like his guts were about to crawl out of his skin. Her hand was so soft and smooth he almost didn't wanna let go, it was warm to the touch and comforting to say the least. His normal radio static was gone and instead a song from the thirty's filtered in and began to play. Al noticed right away and reluctantly swooped his hand away from hers consequently stopping the music with a what sounded like a record scratch.
Charlie noticed his sudden movement and gave him a free exit ticket fearing she over stepped. "Oh i'm so sorry, i um guess you should probably inform the others to dress classy for this event." She said with a soft yet nervous smile.
Al gratefully took this offer and waved her goodbye before exiting her room and pretty much instantly teleporting to his room at the hotel. The moment he got inside he sat on the velvet red bed, the room came with, with a flop. "What in the world just happened?" Al asked to himself outloud.
His little radio staff responded back to him only with the same song that Al cut off earlier. The thirties love song type of music.
"Oh please i don't need a dance party at the moment. I don't understand did she use some sort of demonic power on me back there or what?!" Al debated deeply, no way as far as he can tell he's much stronger than that charming demoness he'd be able to sense it.
His staff rolloed its single eye, "You know for and overlord you're quite oblivious! Hah" A laugh track crackled through, it's gonna take a lot for Al to figure it out.

Extra: “Sanitize” and Outsider POVs (Chemical Reactions)
Well, here’s 1.5k words of outsider POV: a hobbyist chemist/physicist meets Yui. Science results. It’s basically indulgent fluff I wrote for no reason besides, well... indulgence. Sparked by the thought that our knowledge of physics and chemistry has grown so much... people and science are pretty wonderful. Takes place in no specific time. Here’s Chemical Reactions.
---
Being wealthy and charismatic meant that Haru Watanabe was called ‘eccentric.’ He was also a middle-aged man with three children and a doting wife, the owner of a thriving spice business—mostly ran by the aforementioned wife—and a self-described scholar with a surprising amount of perceptiveness. Basically, Haru did everything else right so that he could get away with doing some things wrong.
(The first sin in question: throwing himself headfirst into physics and chemistry despite having enough money to pursue respectable subjects like history, politics, literature, or historical political literature.)
Haru had people who could do the tiresome but necessary business of actually bringing the goods from one place to another. Unfortunately, there did come times where he had to make the trek in person, generally when it involved a noble personage of one dinky plot or another who got delusions of grandeur. Haru would then kiss his wife and children, board the caravan, and head to woo the noble who was choking his trade routes. This time, he was with a scribe, a servant, and two hired Sarutobi guards.
(The greater sin: blabbing about his scientific interests with everyone who had the slightest amount of interest, which in Haru’s world, was the equivalent of looking in his direction.)
He’d talked his associates’s ears off during the journey there, and on the way back, both his employees were resigned to hearing his newest ideas--his scribe knew it by heart. Though the younger ninja had been interested at first, now the two Sarutobi were staring into the distance with glazed eyes.
(The final sin: making sure that he walked his hostage audience through the concepts in question until they understood it instead of blabbing without input, denying said audience the luxury of entirely tuning it out.)
So when Haru stopped in Chiyuku to pay the necessary pilgrimage to Healer Yui’s residence, he of course took her offer of tea as an invitation to speak about his newest pet theory. Haru hadn’t met with her personally before, having never been down this route himself, but he and every merchant with business on this side of the country knew about her. And Haru especially knew of her reputation for sharing knowledge. Was it likely that she knew anything about his interests? No, but that had never stopped him before.
“I have a great interest in science,” he began, smiling.
She didn’t pause in the middle of bandaging—the younger Sarutobi was lightly burned, but only because he’d practiced some sort of ninja technique above his skill levels, much to the exasperation of the older one—but she looked up.
“Is that so?” Yui was perfectly polite. “What kind of sciences?”
“Oh, physics and chemistry, mainly.” He let his smile grow brighter. “The very big and very small, the planets and the atoms.”
There was a glint of genuine interest now, even as she said, “Give me a minute, please.” Haru was content to wait as she gave the ninja instructions, washed her hands, poured herself a cup of tea, and took a seat across from him. “You’re a scholar in both subjects?”
Her voice was the mix of a rustic drawl and clipped enunciation that educated rural folk tended to have, and Haru could detect traces of other accents, likely picked up from all the travelers that came through Chiyuku.
(Again, he wasn’t a bad merchant. He was a rather excellent one, though his wife was the exceptional half. Haru was well-versed in the art of sizing someone up.)
“I am!” Haru sipped his tea and was pleasantly surprised by its mellow flavor. He’d had worse tea in fancier places. “Are you aware of the elements of matter?” Before he could start his theory, he needed to gauge her current knowledge.
It wasn’t quite a non-sequitur, but Yui took the small leap between topics in stride. “Yes. Carbon, nitrogen…” She hesitated. “I have the periodic chart of elements. A colleague of mine gave me some books with them.”
HHaru’s interest was piqued. “Did he?” He reevaluated her and took a different tack. “As you might be aware, we can put some elements together and create new ones. Organics from organics and inorganics from like. Not one from the other, and some combinations of elements won’t combine at all. Why do you think so?”
And so began a conversation like none other that Haru had participated in, beyond his wildest dreams. (A virtue: Haru could talk and talk and talk, but he could also listen. With colleagues and scholars—and his brilliant, incredible wife—he could sit spellbound for hours, with little to say but “Please, continue!”)
He kept asking why, why, and she kept answering. Yui spoke about the shape of atoms and the charged pieces that made up them. She spoke about the bonds between elements and the shape of those bonds, all connected by little electric pieces of matter that orbited around them. Finally, he asked about the interactions of magnets and forces, about the minutiae of why some elements had so many electric bits, why the shells around each center were numbered the way they were.
“I’ve...” she paused. “ I don’t really know. This is all a guess, anyway,” she added. “None of this will be proved for decades.” Yui cleared her throat, gone hoarse with talking, and she sipped her tea.
By now, the sun had dipped from its high point to begin its journey downwards. Haru’s guard took the opportunity to hazard a reminder: “Perhaps it would be best to continue—”
“Thank you, Sarutobi-san,” interrupted Haru. “I think we shall stay sometime longer, if it suits the esteemed healer.”
Yui seemed torn, having clearly enjoyed a conversation with someone who not only followed along but also hadn’t questioned her authority. “I wouldn’t want to keep you…”
“No, not at all!” He waved her concerns aside. “Now, you were talking about proof? How would you prove this?” Haru took care to keep his voice eager and curious, letting no suggestion of incredulity or accusation color his voice. He knew how easy it was to dismiss a woman’s knowledge, intentionally or not. Why, his own darling wife needed him as a frontman to manage the business, as silly as that was—she was better than he ever could be.
With a hesitant smile, Yui began to describe a series of fantastical devices: microscopes that used electric pieces, machines that spun bits of matter fast enough to tear them open, and lightning that could split bonded compounds in two.
Haru listened eagerly, soaking up as much knowledge as he could. His ability to listen, his experience, and his surprisingly deep well of common sense gave him a fine-tuned nonsense detector. And yet, her words didn’t set it off, likely because they made sense. Likely because she admitted freely how she couldn’t prove any of it, that this was baseless speculation.
(It didn’t feel like it.)
“What about chakra? Where does this fit in?”
The two ninja, alternatively bored out of their minds and surprisingly keen to listen, perked up at Haru’s question.
And to his ongoing surprise, she laughed. “I have absolutely no idea.” Yui leaned back in her chair, taking another sip. “An energy source from another universe? A force we don’t understand? Who knows. All I know is that it seems to break all laws of the natural world.”
Haru mirrored her body language, leaning back as well. “And you know how to use it.”
“I do, but I don’t understand it.”
He made a contemplative sound. Haru liked knowing things, and Yui had done him an enormous favor by sharing. Then again, he liked knowing things, and she… was a mystery. For not the first time this journey, Haru wished that his wife was with him. She would know what to say. (Another flaw: his stubbornness, his refusal to let anything go when it caught his interest...)
“Is your knowledge supernatural?”
(... and the bluntness that resulted from it.)
This time, everyone stared at him.
Yui blinked, a mix of shock, horror, and annoyance displayed in her creasing forehead.
Haru blinked back, suddenly aware that this faux pas was inexcusable, even for him. “Anyway,” he said, moving the conversation on before it lingered like a carelessly lit firecracker between them, “I must thank you sincerely for indulging me. As a token of appreciation...”
Haru opened the bag that he had carried with him, full of physics and chemistry books that he had planned on going over with the healer—before she’d blown away every preconception and filled his minds with theories in no book before her. He chewed his lip, considering the titles, and finally picked out the one that had the most similar and detailed analysis to what she’d told him. It was mostly a comparison of elemental properties and compounds, but… Haru had noticed that despite her detailed knowledge, she’d made up many of the words for the esoteric parts of her masterful theory.
“Here,” he said, placing the book on the table. “If you want any others in my bag, do let me know. And if it pleases you, I can send you any book on any topic you desire, if you promise to share me more of your wonderful theories.” He undercut his statement with a bright smile, trying to convey that he meant it as a friend—or at least a friendly acquaintance.
Yui gave him a careful smile back, though her openness had shuttered with his blundered statement. “I’d like that,” she said.
And just like that, Haru had another puzzle he knew he had to solve: the source of her knowledge.

Social Engagement (Kota Tinggi,Johor)
NUR ERMA FARISHA BINTI MOHD HALIM SHAH
IIV180053
Hello everyone J I wish everyone is doing fine and have enough rest for this upcoming hectic busiest week in the semester.
I would love to share with all my readers about my fantastic unforgettable social engagement experience at Kota Tinggi, Johor. Maybe certain of you will think “What is so special with this Social Engagement ?” or “We just finished it to fulfill the requirement of the syllabus.” I dare to bet if you put your heart into it you will find something worth it.
Let us begin! First of  all, we need to choose our job scope for this project. I choose to register my name under activity’s unit because I wished to do something new and extraordinary. Or maybe kill two birds with one stone which is going travel while doing social engagement. I have my best friends and my partners in crime for this semester to be in the same unit. And it hyped me more to do my best for this project. Not to forget we always had a discussion anywhere we met even in class, or bumped each other randomly or after meeting even though we still did not have the exact decision yet. We keep discussing and we got so much draft for the planning of the activities. Such as 3R ,self-awareness about the nature, facilitator program and arts.  We used to discuss at KL GATEWAY so it is easy for us to buy all the necessary things needed for this project. Yeah all girl vibes tend myself to do something abnormal sometimes. And the most miracle thing happened to me is Allah grant my wishes to do the charity for the society. I met this one generous gentleman during my housekeeping activity who is working for Dar Murtadza Volunteer and he was willing to donate us 5 boxes of staple food. It’s miracle because we had 10 days left before we go to Johor but there’s people who is willing to help with this charity. For your information, to ask from a company’s contribution need a lot of procedure to settle down and cannot be done just within a week. I felt very grateful. All praise to Him.
We went to Johor at 12:00 in the morning on 2nd November 2019. Before our bus departed to Johor my special person came by to pay a visit which it really made my day. Uhuks… when we arrived at Johor, we have been greet with a broad smile by Mak Ngah and Cik Piah. They brought us home and served a luxury variety of food for breakfast. My first impression was                           “Wow there’s a lot to eat”. We spent our first day at Sekolah Agama Felda Ayer Tawar. We cleaned up and painted the school’s classes’ door, assembly field, safety guard etc. I was doing the painting task and I learned the right way to use the brush from Afaf and it was a fun activity. We also become creative for making clothes from plastic bag to cover us because we didn’t brought any extra clothes on that day. I met this two kind-hearted nice helpful kids who always stick around me. They never stop asking me to play with them and we shared a lot of stories throughout the day. For me they’re like my brother and sister and when kids tried to disturb or accompanied you, you must never ignore them. That is their development phase for social communication skills and we must support them because they turned to be comfortable when being with you. Listen to their story is also one of a good therapy to release tension. The headmaster or well-known as Ummi advised us to always doing good to everyone.
We went to Sedili Kechil for beach cleaned up session. We spent half a day there to do the cleaning and we did some explorace after Zohor. Oh here is the hardest challenges. The place is not as what I’m expected to be and our plan cannot be done successfully. I thought it was full with people but actually it just a beach with a few society living there. We found a lot of non-biodegradable treasures. My teammates and I had to fully change our plans 360˚ without no regret because we manage to handle everything and save the time. In fact to become a referee is a scariest things ever because people will always attacked you when they’re lost. Lost or Win is a tradition in every game and lost is one step to reach another victory. If you never lost  you will never know how to do better than usual.
For the last day preparation, my teammates stayed up at Nek Yah house to have final discussion. During that time I felt like I’m a growing up small girls because Nek Yah served coffee and some biscuit to us. Seems like we had a serious discussion, right? We slept very late that night and to be honest the next day is an exhausted day for me yet fun enough. We went to Sekolah Kebangsaan Muzaffar Syah to have a facilitator program. We exposed the  students to activities such as “Jari Menjadi Saksi”, “Time Wastage”, “Know yourself” and sharing session. We divided each of us into small group to become facilitator which will give a chance for them to facilitate kids and be the platform to enhance their inner soft skills. We must believe one another to achieve the same goal. That is how it’s work where everyone will strive for it. I love those kids because they are sporting. Our module is more to motivation aspect so the teachers suggest us to do it earlier before the examination week. And I take that as a compliment so I know the right time and suitable  module to choose for the next facilitator program. After zohor we went to meet the chosen precious person to deliver the donation that we had last day, accompanied by the high committee of the village. And the saddest part was when we’re going back to University of Malaya. We realized that we already fell in love with all the villagers and it’s incredible they able to made us feeling that way within 3 days.
After the program has ended, we had post mortem to improve our management for other upcoming project and to celebrate the successful of this project. From this project I learnt to plan and organize each activities well and we must have a back-up due to any unpredictable circumstances. I learnt to manage the time for each planned activities to avoid any delay. In a team we must believe one another because trustworthy is the best policy in a teamwork. It is best for us to give a good cooperation in a team to ensure the project went smooth. I hope that I can join this type of project for my upcoming year in UM because it is a golden opportunity for me to enhance my inner soft skills.

A Muted Hue of Grey  (1/14)  -- CSBB
Tumblr media
Summary: Emma Swan liked being a PI in Boston. It was a fun job, she had an okay income and she was a good one at that, so there was no logical reason to try and leave. Except for the fact that she wanted to, so badly. And, when she received a job offer for what seemed to be the opportunity of a lifetime, she did exactly that. Leave. Run. All the way to London. The job was simple: trailing a man called Killian Jones. Easy enough.
Well, until things get complicated, that is.
Rating: M (later mentions of violence, alcohol abuse, and sex)
Wordcount: 2934

A/N: Pheeewww it's finally here! Over a year ago, I came up with yet another prompt that I thought I was never going to write and then had the crazy idea to write it as a part of @captainswanbigbang which was one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time. I've been working on this story for months and at last, it is done and ready to be posted. This has been a 61K labor of love with a couple of obstacles along the road (I’m looking at you, uni). I owe major gratitude to my betas and superheroes @acourtoftruelove and @ofshipsandswans for sometimes yelling at me, often correcting me, and always squealing along with me. I couldn't have done this without them.
And check out the banner and amazing picset by the lovely @shady-swan-jones who gave this fic the perfect art to go along with it.
So, without further ado: A Muted Hue of Grey.
——————————
God, why were there so many people?
She thought Boston was bad but London was, quite frankly, ten times worse. She had to keep her lips pursed together to keep from grunting and swearing every two seconds. Tourists here, street vendors there. Cyclists who ran a red light, almost plowing her over when she had every right to cross as the green stick figure had given her permission. The city had its charm, of course, but not when she needed to focus and could not be distracted by a girl taking a selfie in the middle of the road while blocking every other person walking there. Emma had a mission and she couldn’t fuck it up.
Avoiding eye contact with the pubescent-looking guy, clipboard in hand and a bright raincoat with a logo of some non-profit organization branded on his back, she continued on. It had to be far from an enjoyable job, standing outside, braving the cold and the rain only to be turned down time after time. Emma did feel sorry for the teenagers. She wasn’t against supporting animals or the environment, far from it actually, but more often than not the “have you heard about this cause” talk generated a nuisance that could only be avoided by lowering her gaze and crossing the road. There was no time to politely listen to them rattle their practiced speech only to politely decline with the answer that she would think about it. Especially now.
Sounds of a busker infiltrated the buzz of the people around her, of all those conversations held between the commuters or across the phone. The chords played on the battered guitar were familiar, ones she’d definitely heard before, and when the words joined the rest of the music, Emma shook her head with a trace of a smile appearing, feeling foolish that she didn’t figure it out earlier. Wonderwall, of course.
While the street musicians lacked originality vis-a-vis their choice of music (John Lennon, Oasis, Goo Goo Dolls, Radiohead; she’d heard it all a thousand times), most of them did possess a lot of talent. Emma halted more often than not—when she wasn’t in a hurry—to listen to their rendition of some cliché song, giving them whatever spare change she had in her purse or pocket and in return being thanked with a smile.
Honestly, London wasn’t all that bad. Her apartment was shit, yes; there was no point in attempting to gloss over that. It was impossible to hide the mold stains and pretend the ice water squirting out of the defect shower was pleasant and warm. Although her landlord was of that opinion somehow; anything to get him out of spending time and effort to fix some bothersome issues he’d rather ignore. The jackass.
She didn’t have any friends after moving here, yes, that was true too. But she could handle being alone, she was quite experienced with loneliness and independence, had learned to be resourceful and creative every time she lacked an extra pair of hands, an additional set of eyes or simply some new company.
The city wasn’t all that great either, but Emma could think of worse places to be. New York, for one, where the large crowds only resulted in chaos; a heavily-polluted, siren-screeching mess. London, however, seemed more structured to Emma. The perfect place to be undercover, to blend into the masses and only reappear when she felt like it all the while still retaining a sense of overview. And for what her job consisted of, that trait was necessary and ideal.
It had taken a while to grow accustomed to the British manners, the overabundance of pet names (she had to keep herself from answering “I’m not your love” everytime she got called some sort of variation), to everything basically. From the way they ordered food to the way their traffic was directed—god, she’s never been so afraid for people riding a bike as she was for the cyclists risking their lives between the swerving and honking cars.
It had been a struggle to not be the American amongst Brits and to not ooze her Americanness in the way she moved and the way she looked. It had taken a combination of observing and adapting, but now, Emma was sure she appeared as any other London goer. One last disclosure was the moment she would open her mouth and began talking in an accent that could not be interpreted as anything but American. Luckily for her, however, she was never the socializing type so she was able to restrict unnecessary communication to a minimum. Yay for being a loner.
She scanned the crowded bridge before her again, adjusting the camera around her neck. Its synthetic band was uncomfortably chafing against the skin of her neck, turning it raw and itchy. In a soothing manner, her hand massaged the dry patch of skin, but to no avail. She had to stop thinking about it, the irritation would only get worse.
A distraction presented itself and Emma let out a relieved sigh when she obtained a visual confirmation that the selfie-taking girl had not ruined everything. It had taken her more than a week to figure the whole situation out, to know where she should be and at what time. The shortcuts she was supposed to take were etched into her mind, a detailed treasure map with a moving X. Left here, two blocks ahead another left, she could almost do it with her eyes closed—if it weren’t for the other people.
If anyone ever asked her what her dream job was, her answer wouldn’t be traipsing around London by foot, but she’d made the choice for this profession a long time ago—after she’d been beaten up as a bail bonds person far too often—and it had stuck. She was good at what she did and after a couple of jobs, her reputation began to precede her. Offers came from left and right, giving her a wide array of choices and letting her be picky, a luxury she could not afford when she was younger. It helped her to be able to fly to another continent and pay way too much for her shit apartment.
The move here was a bit radical, almost crazy, but she’d been asked and she was never one to pass up on a good work opportunity. Her ties back in America weren’t deeply rooted. They could easily be yanked out to start afresh and even though she’d had some mournful and aghast responses to her news, all of her friends knew her enough to have prepared for this situation. They had always kept an eye open for the impending moment, the sudden flash when Emma would get sick of the suburban life and would want a whole one-eighty. The whole picket fence life… well, she wasn’t there yet and doubted she ever would.
She’d come back eventually; this job wasn’t going to take years of her life, but there was no haste either. She would return home with a new experience and some new stories under her belt. No new friends; Emma wasn’t idealistic enough to expect herself to suddenly gain friends. Nor was she social enough; the only things she did were work and return home.
Every day, she took the same route, she visited the same places. The coffee shop across the street that had the surly-looking barista but had the best price-quality ratio. The laundromat two blocks over that didn’t communicate their closing hours clearly enough and had automatically locked Emma inside when she’d noticed at 9.49 pm that she had no clean underwear anymore. The night shop that provided Emma with midnight snacks and drinks and its joyful owner who always gave her a discount. Places with people, but none she spoke more words than hello, bye and thank you to.
It had taken her years to gather and open up to the people she frequently came across back in Boston: the girl with the pixie cut who lived in 2A, her sandy-haired boyfriend, the owner of the diner Emma ate at every Monday morning, the martial arts coach at the gym she used to work out at until she was sweaty and exhausted. Years of coaxing on their part, asking her in the hallway, in the locker room, mid-breakfast to hang out, only to be met by her immediate refusal. Years of learning to trust.
Honestly, she was grateful they never stopped trying, never let being cast off by the solid brick walls surrounding her deter them. They saw something in her—Zeus knows what exactly that was—and wanted to include her, let her enter their little but tight-knit circle of people when they barely knew her. Their only reasoning was that “she looked like she could use some company”, a direct quote from the circle’s mother, Mary Margaret, also known as 2A’s pixie cut.
Emma subtly curled her lips and closed her eyes as she thought back to the people back home, momentarily basking in the warm feeling that settled inside of her. But this wasn’t the time to be sentimental, she could save that for another time, one where she was preferably alone and not working. She continued to maneuver around, opening and lifting her eyes to gain sight of her target anew. The mop of black hair was about 20 yards in front of her, still moving at a steady pace.
She lifted the camera with care to avoid hurting her already damaged skin even more and held it before her face. Closing her left eye to exclude any form of distraction, her right focused on the tiny image before her. The image was still blurry and after a couple of heartbeats, it became clear, the perfect quality for Emma to press the button. The shutter clicked fast, a set of successive images following quickly, flashing along.
After a quick check of her material and a nod, showing her satisfaction with the results, she let the camera drop again, the device bumping against her stomach a couple of times before steadying and adjusting to her fast steps. He was moving fast so she had to as well.
There were white earbuds dangling from his ears, his head softly bobbing along to the beat of the song reverberating in his ears. He was entranced in his own little world, with a personal soundtrack to which he moved and acted and that drowned out the bustle of the city.
She was curious about what he was listening to, what music was worthy of the honor of being added to his playlist and blasted into his ears every morning. Was he a rock listener? Classical music connoisseur? Did he have a penchant for sappy love songs à la Ed Sheeran that he would then emotionally sing along to? Was he as original in creating his playlists as the buskers that were scattered in subway stations and on street corners? Emma supposed it wouldn’t take her too long to figure it out, to figure him out, all the way to the final details of his being and character.
For not being a people person, she prided herself on being able to read people quite well.
The spring sun shone brightly and without encumbrance, hitting her skin directly and causing small beads of sweat to gather at her temples and a thin layer on her upper lip, which Emma rapidly wiped away. The clothes she was wearing—a thick woolen sweater and jeans—were unfit for this weather. It was as though it were the heart of August and not the blossoming beginning of April in a country where winter had only just ceded its powers. Emma wished—fervently—she had known that this morning. She also wished she had thought about layers. Their power could not be underestimated. They were the way of life here.
But the white fabric stuck to her skin, the sweat not helping at all, and slowed her movements down as she attempted to quicken her pace. She was losing track of the nape, the mess of hair she was pursuing. The stress found its way to her head, making Emma’s heart pick up pace as well. Her steps quickened on the concrete, the tap tap occasionally interrupted by a rasp of shoes on the underground when she turned a sharp corner and braked. Her steady breathing was turning into a pant, proving to Emma it was definitely time to renew her gym membership. Being a PI might be less physical and consist of less running, fighting, avoiding danger etc. than a bail bonds person's curriculum but that did not mean she was allowed to slouch. Not if she was doing this.
She squeezed herself between a group of tourists, much to the dismay of said tourists who indignantly addressed her in Spanish. Not that she would understand what words they were using in their complaints, her high school Spanish had withered to a dead plant after not being watered and nourished for years. Emma hastened to reach the leader, using the woman’s Spanish flag as a guide to reach the end of the troop and to be able to pass her. With her camera clutched tightly, held close to not bestow any additional hindrance, she zigzagged, ducking and swerving as she seemed fit. After a minute or so—though it felt like a lifetime—she re-emerged from the group, some more Spanish thrown her way, frantically looking for him.
Shit, where did he go?
While before it was like a ray of light lit him up, pointing out where he walked in the crowd, now there was only darkness. An unlit maze without any sort of red thread, a challenge she had no idea how to tackle. The metaphorical target on his back had vanished. Hundreds of dark-haired people, dozens of earbuds, not the one Emma needed.
She needed him, with his leather bag, the pirate necklace around his neck, the tattoo on his right upper arm, with those elven ears Emma was so fascinated by but would never admit to anyone that she was.
What was he doing?
Right, three streets, right again, left until the lights.
That was what the GPS embedded into her brain told her was his route; that was what he always did on Saturday afternoon.
So why wasn’t he standing before the red glowing traffic light?
He had a routine he followed almost meticulously. A creature of extreme habit, that was what he was. Emma had to buy herself a watch to be able to know what time it was at every second and not have to bother with retrieving her phone from her pocket every time, losing precious seconds. She used the simple watch on her wrist to follow his movements, needed it on every occasion. There were not a lot of people she had met before who were this exact, who left their apartment when the clock stroke precisely eight, who re-entered their apartment at 17:23 time and time again, regardless of the weather, day or season.
This was not like him.
Emma peered over her shoulder as she took a right, the sudden movement making her hair whip, attempting to look through the masses to double check if he surely hadn’t taken the left turn like usual, but there was no trace of him. Or his unique ears.
Right as she turned her head back, in what felt like a blink of an eye, there was something right in front of her. Someone. Emma attempted to decelerate and stop but the distance was too small to do so, her body still in motion. She braced for the shock, the crash of two moving objects together, her body meeting another solid mass and flinched to prepare for the pain to hit her but there were two hands that softened the blow, that settled on both of her upper arms, one warm and one cold.
Emma didn’t dare to open her eyes, eyelids still squeezed shut. Until the someone she almost hit, but didn’t because they were paying attention while she was focused on other things, cleared their throat, an attempt to capture Emma’s attention and most likely to prompt her to open her eyes again instead of standing there like a scared little child.
Biting the inside of her lip, Emma slowly peeled her eyes open, letting them first adjust to the light again and then scan her direct surroundings. She was staring at a chest. A man’s chest. There were earbuds dangling from his grey Henley, a trace of chest hair peeking out the top and a silver chain around his neck. An odd feeling of apprehension plagued her, heartbeat lodged in her throat, as her eyes hesitantly traveled upwards, in search of a face, of some point of recognition who this mysterious stranger-slash-savior was.
Blue eyes stared into hers.
Familiar blue eyes.
“Can I help you, lass?” he asked and while this was the first time she had heard him speak, the cadence, the accent, the voice—his voice—felt familiar. As if she’d spent hours upon hours listening to it, talking to him. She could almost imagine how his voice would sound in a laugh, how it would change when he was tired, the accent thick and present, how it would caress in a whisper.
It felt as if she knew him.
Which she did.
But also didn’t.
Because this was Killian Jones.
The man she was hired to spy on.
The man who was holding her and staring at her with expectant eyes.
Fuck.

How I Saved $10000 in 10 Months
I’m not a saver by birth. I like to spend money. I view money as only one type of currency, not the most valuable one. Time comes first in the ranks, followed by energy, and then comes money. Money is not and has never been particularly valuable to me. It rarely ever brought me happiness but I was convinced while growing up that my net worth was a reflection of my self worth.
I never liked the idea of being frugal. I didn’t enjoy having to go without to prepare for a future emergency. For the last three years I have made a pretty consistent yearly amount through tutoring, babysitting, administrative tasks, and other similar odd jobs. But, I lived like I made a lot more. I wasn’t spending on luxuries and going out. I was just spending more than I had on things that I needed, or seemed to need. I became increasingly worried about not having enough money.
The fear of not having enough money, instilled into me at such a young age added to this terror churning inside me. I went to bed and woke up in frenzy of overwhelming nausea and tears.
But one day, after a particularly bad incident with a client, I decided that enough was enough. This particular client generously offered to pay my semester tuition in full in exchange for unlimited tutoring. Eternally grateful, I accepted. This client proceeded to give me the run around for four weeks and on the final day, had me drive over 30 miles from town to town chasing her for the check. After a grueling three hours, she called to let me know that she was in the hospital and her husband never agreed to give me the money.
I was embarrassed, humiliated, exhausted, spent, and so ashamed of myself for letting this person take advantage of me and exploit my needs. It was in that moment that I decided to stop letting money have any hold on me whatsoever. I was going to manage my money; it was not going to manage me.
I joined Frugal Families on Facebook and gathered several books to help me. I read Ana Newell Jones, Amy Dacyzyn, and Dave Ramsey among countless others. (I don’t necessarily recommend this but I like to read so it was a win win) You can get similar information by watching Youtube videos or short articles.
Through all my collectives, I found that managing finances and saving money comes down to a pretty simple idea: don’t spend money. But, my problem, along with many people, isn’t that I didn’t know HOW to save money, but that I couldn’t convince myself of WHY.
My thinking of money was all screwed up! I associated saving with withholding, going without, deprivation, dependence, poverty, and unhappiness. I held money in the top tier of my self esteem and felt that I needed it to prove to people that they should respect me. Putting $1000 in the bank and not touching it is infinitely easier than learning to love yourself if you don’t already. Once your self esteem has been tied into how much money you spend, its a tough knot to untangle.
So, I took these baby steps ( to all my Dave Ramsey fans out there). It took me a couple months to compile all these steps and even longer to start to truly follow all of them. I am 23 years old, I make about 24K a year, I am a part time college student, and I don’t have any kids or dependents. A lot of people may be discouraged from reading this article because maybe I don’t fit their demographic, make more or less, have fewer expenses or some other excuse. They may be right. I don’t know how well these steps may work for other people and I definitely cannot guarantee any results. It’s just a look into my own experience. But, if you want to break the ball and chain of money has around your ankle or maybe even save up $10000, grab a notebook and at least give this a try!
1.
Remove people from your life that you feel value money too much. These people are easy to identify: who in your life do you feel judges you the most? Limit contact with these people for a set period of time (maybe forever), or just until you save $10000. These people breed thoughts of inadequacy and manipulate us into spending money we don't need and becoming people we don't want to be, i.e. a woman in the Tightwad Gazette who admitted that she spent more money on her wealthy nephew’s Christmas presents than her own children.
2.
Write down your goals, hopes and dreams (not financial goals). What kind of person are you now and what do you hope will change after you become financially stable? Where do you see yourself in ten years? What would you do if you had a million dollars? What are some things about your life that you wish you could change? Why can’t you? What are aspects of life that you are grateful for? What is your dream career? What are some of your insecurities and fears? Ask yourself all these questions and any more you can think of. This should be a private journal entry that you can look back to so, be as open as you can for yourself.
3.
Write down your financial goals. How much money do you want to save? My goal was $20,000.
4.
Analyze your spending. Print out the last few months of your bank statements. Make a list. In and out. What went into the bank account and what went out. This is on the bottom of every monthly statement.
5.
Categorize all the items that went “out”. I use a pretty simple system for this: necessary and not necessary. Rent, car payments, gas, and doctors are needs. Mcdonald’s, make up, even buying books instead of borrowing them are not necessary. Be careful not to categorize non necessities as “wants”. This implies a careless decision was made and that we should feel bad or embarrassed about it. Our money is ours and we may choose to spend it however we wish. Remember that we want to feel more confident in our decisions through this process.
6.
Evaluate your needs list. Obviously rent and car payments can’t be negotiated down but if all your needs eat up more than half your income, see if anything can change. In my personal example, I had a car payment of $198/month. During the summer months, when babysitting jobs were scarce, I only made about $900/month. Coupled with rent, I had $100 left over every month to survive on. The solution was not easy, short term, or inexpensive. I had to buy a used car and get rid of my lease, find another side gig for the summer, or find a cheaper place to stay.
7.
Evaluate your non necessities list.Create a category for every expense (eating out, crafts, shopping, subscriptions) and then prioritize them in order of used. If you spent $300 this month on books, it goes to the top of the list. Next, think about what you could and couldnt live without. Put those in order too. Note: this does not mean cutting everything out. Think about what is important to you and what can change. Just because something isnt a basic need, does not mean it is not important. For me, going out with friends, and a small budget to grab some fast food if I was still hungry after lunch meant a lot. So those went to the top of my list.
8.
For future reference, I recommend using a debit card as cash to be able to track all your purchases. So this baby step is get a debit card at a bank that is near you with a safe and convenient ATM. Commit to putting cash onto the card in small amounts to avoid temptation, but often, like once a week. I never keep more than $50 available on my debit card at any time. I have worked my weekly amount down to just $15, just enough to eat out twice a week.
9.
PAY DAY. If you are like me and don’t have a regular deposit schedule, make one and keep to it. Be flexible about how often and how much you want to see your money grow. I tried a bi-weekly deposit schedule but learned that I prefer looking at how much I made at the end of the week. So, I deposit money into my account every Friday.
10.
You have money, now what do you do with it?? Consult your needs list and put aside the amount that you cannot change this month. Pay your bills immediately.
11.
What is left over? Budget your non-necessities and leave that in your account. Take whatever is left and shove it into your savings account.
12.
Reconsider your budget. This is the part when you slowly trick your brain into enjoying frugality. Remember that amount that you shoved into savings? No you don’t! Next month, create your budget without that chunk of savings, so immediately after payday, shove it into your savings account after bills and before non-necessities. Don’t be discouraged if you have to touch your savings account because you went over budget. Just try to average out the same amount for 3-4 months. Also, even $5 is a hefty deposit amount if you’ve been picking away at your account for the past 6 months. Be proud of yourself for any and all progress!
This last step was very helpful to me because it helped me become more and more creative about how to live on less. I learned to prioritize my hobbies, treated myself sparingly, and invest time I had in place of money I didn’t have. Overall, I became much happier than I was.
Another tip, I’d like to include is to be kinder to yourself. In hindsight it is easy to look at my expenses and realize I could’ve put a little more away here and there but I have no regrets about the mistakes I have made. Step 4 was arguably the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my life; analyze my mistakes and have compassion for myself. Even going forward, the continued slip ups I had taught me more about myself and helped me to make better decisions the next time.
I know this article seemingly boils down to taking a portion of your income and putting it into a savings account. But quite honestly, it has nothing to do with money. I have calculated that I could have put an extra $5000 away in the last ten months if I had really stuck to my needs, but that wasn’t the point. I wanted to live a life without the fear of money: not having enough, always wanting more. I was afraid to check my bank balance and I couldn’t resist a great sale that added to my net worth. Since I started my journey to financial stability, I don’t worry as much about what I have. That isn’t because I have a lot, but because I always know exactly what I had and I am confident about my ability to work with it.  It shifted my mentality of depending on money to take care of me to realizing that only I am responsible and capable of taking care of myself and money is just one of many tools that can help me. Break the chain!

NO- it’s not an option
I am in the process of Selling my home (beyond the process I guess, we are in the middle of closing escrow!!! Woohoo!!!) I’ll be honest, it took 4 days to sell my home, so I hope what I’m saying doesn’t sound like a complaint, this entire entry should be the complaint, ha, ha, just kidding- kinda. My home is smaller then my next home (which is also in process, 3 weeks!!) but it doesn’t lack comfort. Although I have never been a true fan of this particular home, it has allowed us to experience a lot of family-like ‘adventures’ (don’t worry, you’ll hear about some of those sometime in the future). My new home is sitting pretty on 4 and a half acres of clean, flat land! My home has enough bedrooms for EVERYONE to have their own space! This next home is a blessing that I can never describe with all the words in the world. Not only is it gorgeous, but thanks to the help of my parents, I got it all on my own! All they really did was sign, but I managed to save, fix my credit and get approved all on my own. Being grateful doesn't even begin to compare to the actual feeling! What did I do to accomplish that? Refused to let anyone convince me that NO was an option.
There are 3 things I’ve said to my kids more then necessary. 1. Quiting is not an option 2. Being rich doesn’t mean your successful 3. Always be of service to people
What do I do for a living? You’d be surprised how many people actually thought I was involved in something illegal... no, really... You’d be surprised! It’s gotten so old that now all I do is smile and nod. I’m not telling you this to make anyone think I’m showing off, no, it’s not about that. I don’t like to struggle, I hate to work, and I don’t understand financial technical terms like dows and percentage and whatever other fancy words they wanna use to shine up the real process. Let me tell you what I did, but first let me give you the scale in which it’s impacted my family.
I grew up with working parents, both held full time jobs, their own businesses, investments, and had the ability to raise my siblings and I with the little luxuries we wanted (the occasional toys r’ us runs, little things like that). They were financial STABLE, but not rich. They opened their own business about 10 years ago and now both are worth about 3 million each, or so says their business person. I saw first hand the struggle my parents went through when they started up their business, my mom even said that there was a handful of times that they didn’t even have money to buy us food. But when success came for them, it came fast!
When I turned 16 I took a dab at DJ-ing. Yes, I really was THAT cool back then! I did that for about 4 years. I worked for an actual radio station when I was 17 1/2, I did all their overnight programming and special events. At 18 at these big events I thought I was at the top of everything! My paychecks I spent on myself! All of it! Every dime. It was as through I was allergic to money and needed to spend it quicker then when I got it. My dad then brought it to my attention about my non-existent money management skills. He was right. What was my solution? Open a savings account? No, I’d still spend it. Save hard cold cash? Nope, I’d spend that too. I had to do something. At 18 money beckoned me. I decided to start doing side jobs; weddings, quinceaneras, anything! All that money I’d hand over to my dad and asked him not to give me a dime no matter what I tell him. WHO KNOW HE WOULD TAKE THAT SO LITERALLY! But it worked, I would save about 2800 every month, give or take. And some months he wouldn’t see anything- com’on! I had to have a life too! At 18 I graduated High School and started school to get my nursing degree. At age 20, with only 10 months left to graduate I got pregnant. I worked as long as I could and tried to do as much in school, I didn’t want to be a statistic! I will not be a number on the ‘’lets blame the baby’’ list! I was determined. AND I FINISHED! Once my baby was born I quit the radio station because it was more important for me to be with him then to be in clubs at night. After he turned 1 I decided to get into my field. I was lucky and got into an ER right away. It was exciting, super fast paced! The problem was the 12 hour shifts! I wasn’t being a baby... I wanted to be with my baby. While I worked there I continued to give my dad cash to hold, it wasn’t as much as before (because raising a baby comes with extra costs). But it was imperative that I saved because now my fear was providing for my child. But the hours were tough, mentally and physically, I went part time after 3 years. One day I had a patient that completely changed my life. PUT A PIN IN THAT!!!! He’s worth the story! Anyway this patient ended up influencing me way more then I could have hoped for! This man was put in my path for a reason.
Closer to today: Last year I asked my dad how much I had finally saved. I never asked him because I was worried I’d be tempted to use it wrongly. Mind you, this was a savings I have accrewed over a span of about 22 years. I never kept track, I never wrote it down. This money had to be OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND. I saved $264,464.10, that means I managed to save almost 12,000 a year! A little over $1,000 month! AGAIN!!!!! I didn’t do it religiously! I remember when the $0.10 happened: I TOLD YOU! Sometimes I wasnt able to, but my system was the following: I would carry $60.00 in cash every week on me for any little thing we might want, eating out, treats, toys, medicine, etc. A WEEK! That number went up when I had more people around me. I kept 1,000 in my bank account after bills at all times (this was also never garenteed: THESE BILLS CAN GET A LITTLE OUT OF HAND! If I had over 1,000, I would withdrawl and give it to my dad, no matter the amount. All the change that was under $5 (bill) I would save in an envelope I kept in my dresser and would seal and turn that change over to my dad at the end of the month (that change adds up QUICK!). Any extra cash- tax refunds, these stimulus... it is wasn’t I always had like a paycheck, it was considered extra and I would send it on its way. HOWEVER!!!!! YES I’VE BEEN TEMPTED! I STILL HAVE THAT TEMPTATION! My dad said to invest it to make money on it. Yea, that’s nice but no. I’m too impatient to wait for someone else to put my money to work. Well, I guess I kinda ate those words: here’s what I did. I have a close family friend who has tons of friends all of which could use a job. I made 3 businesses with $10,000 each. THIS WAS A STRETCH! But it’s do-able for WAY LESS!!! I just couldn’t help over buying, geez!
Long story short, I started a gardening company. I do nothing but cover costs and pay wages. I collect on that and let me tell you- AMAZING. If you intend to do this let me disclose the following: People can be shitty! People CAN steal from you especially is the customers pay cash. PAY YOUR WORKERS WELL AND THEY WILL TREAT YOU WELL! I supply them with the extras. My kids fill refrigerators with snacks and waters or sodas. We supply uniforms at no cost, they get paid time off of two weeks, and rain or shine they get their salary! My son also said MOBILE CAR WASH is good too! There we went, now him and his friend run that truck. They make money, I make money. The 3rd one is a Pool Cleaning Service. This one was a little work because most people with pools have friend references. But this actually holds up pretty good. All three trucks are on my property by 8 pm, my son will fill the tanks, check the interiors, and supplies for the next pick up date. It works out.
Doing this has allowed me to stay home with my kids. I have been a house mom for the last 8 years. And now, I’m buying my 4 acre property! Thank God!
It’s tough, especially because I like expensive things! I love to spend, I love to travel. And believe it or not, I was still able to.
Wow, if this wasn’t an epic RAMBLE, I don’t know what would be! Sorry in advance. I’m so excited! I can’t wait to move! Hopefully someone has a small savings that they want to put to work and maybe this helped you get your mind thinking.

Oberoi Marrakech | Earth OF WANDERLUST
The latest luxurious lodge in Marrakech
Each time I cease by Marrakech I drop a lot an increasing number of in love with this city. The preliminary cease by felt like I used to be scratching the floor and the second pay a go to to felt like a glimpse into the intricacies of Moroccan heritage, mendacity on the coronary heart of Northern Africa. The third go to, even so, felt like a full rediscovery of myself. I checked in to The Oberoi Marrakech for a soulful solo escape stuffed with spa days, energising visits to the medina and quite a lot of calmness you may solely find this considerably exterior the home the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a full overview of my keep at The Oberoi Marrakech, the newest luxurious lodge for the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Oberoi Marrakech
Marrakech is the type of metropolis you drop in get pleasure from with on initially check out. The sights, seems and smells of the souks are a factor to behold. Nevertheless the hustle and bustle of the medina can often be a little or no mind-boggling, so I used to be fired up for a much more mellow escape to Marrakech once I checked in to The Oberoi Marrakech. The lodge is positioned near 30 minutes push from the city itself, set amidst lush olive groves and citrus bushes. You critically get a sense for a way the Mediterranean has affected Moroccan meals and tradition, with recent generate on the market at your fingertips.
My key fear when choosing out a resort to proceed to be in Marrakech is to really feel like I’m basically in Morocco. I need the Moorish structure, space Moroccan delicacies and hammam rituals to finish the all spherical information. The excellent news is, you’ll uncover that on this article after which some.
Tumblr media
Pool Villas at The Oberoi Marrakech
The area sorts on the Oberoi Marrakech are: Deluxe Villa with personal terrace, Deluxe Villa with personal pool, Presidential Suite and Royal Suite. A lot of the resort is manufactured up of the pool villas and the lodge by itself has a complete of 82 suites unfold throughout 20-Eight areas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pool Villas are the preferred various for guests, comprising of a bed room combined with dwelling and a analysis desk, adjoining rest room with bathe and bathtub tub, wander-in wardrobe and an outdoor consuming area with a personal pool. It’s a glamorous affair in actual fact. In case you are testing open air of the hotter months, you may even ask to your pool to be heated to a relaxed 28 ranges celsius.
The rooms are modestly appointed, with the lavish particulars changing into reserved for tiles, giant ceilings and opulent linens. No element has been uncared for with world plugs by the bedside, an in-home Nespresso machine and powder dresser for the women.
Tumblr media
Contained in the Royal Suite
Proper after just a few nights pondering this proceed to be couldn’t get any superior, I used to be equipped an improve to the lodge’s Royal Suite. Because the identify implies, it was fairly extravagant. So so much in order that I squealed with pleasure as quickly as my butler vacated the place. The Royal Suite is way more than triple the speed of the pool villas, so it’s an indulgence reserved for extremely particular events. I actually couldn’t imagine my luck!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nearly each of the villas and suites provide a welcome tray of Moroccan pastries that will likely be topped up day-to-day. There can even be a complementary tray of dried apricots, dates and nuts, accompanied by some recent new fruits and plenty of bottled water.
In case you are celebrating a special day remember to let the crew know previous to your arrival as celebratory champagne and bouquets is just a dial away!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All-around the Resort: Spa, Pool & Conditioning
The rooms are so enticing that you can merely expend your total time poolside within the ease and luxury of your individual villa. Even so there may be considerably additional on give throughout the resort, like these highlights:
Spa
The spa was an full spotlight throughout my proceed to be, primarily for the normal Moroccan hammam. I’ve tried utilizing actually a pair hammam selections in Morocco throughout my visits and this must be probably the most fulfilling. The ritual commenced with a steam tub and adopted the traditional route of exfoliation and rehydration. If in case you have the time, select for the 90-minute hammam to get probably the most out of your take a look at.
Well being
There’s a very well-equipped gymnasium within the spa spot with a pair cardio gadgets, completely free-weights and fairly a unprecedented assortment of weighted machines to your exercise routines. Private coach intervals are provided and there are a few no value courses on current depending on the plan. These embrace issues like yoga courses, boxing courses and thrice weekly operates with the Typical Supervisor, Fabien.
Most necessary Pool Location
For associates staying within the terrace suites dread not, there’s a giant widespread pool appropriate by the important thing entrance. That is additionally the place you’ll uncover the lodge’s lunch cafe, with a summery menu like classics like caesar salad and pizzas on the menu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An extra emphasize of the lodge is a little bit of an unsung hero: the lodge’s library. This library is full of English and French textbooks that typically tackle the heritage, custom and even recipes of Morocco. You might be attainable to understand this location of the lodge completely to by yourself as it’s often forgotten!
Tumblr media
Locations to eat on the Oberoi
A special essential issue for me selecting a lodge to proceed to be is the consuming selections and The Oberoi didn’t disappoint. Siniman was my standout various for consuming locations, supplying common Moroccan delicacies and rituals (like washing your palms, Moroccan tea and even dwell new music).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The up coming restaurant in your agenda will likely be Azur, positioned by the most important pool space and the lodge’s solely lunch various on web site. In the event you find your self spending the working day on the trip resort, I can vastly suggest the caesar salad adopted by two scoops of salted caramel ice product! All of the issues is in-built home and you’ll critically inform the change.
A single of the times I used to be invited to spend a pair of a number of hours guiding the scenes inside the lodge’s kitchen incomes my have assortment of Moroccan salads, a traditional vegetarian tagine and ending on a candy remember with Moroccan pastries. This was genuinely a spotlight of my hold and I hope they ponder opening up cooking programs to attendees.
Tumblr media
Reserve your Proceed to be
Concerned with reserving a proceed to be? I’d recommend scheduling through the lodge direct and producing use of the supplemental 10% low value in case you reserve 30 instances previous to your keep. Costs begin out at 8,500 MAD for the non-public pool villa – for each villa, per night time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A really heat thanks to the Oberoi Marrakech workforce for welcoming me to {photograph} the lodge! All viewpoints and pictures are my private.

On Bathroom Equality
Having your first period is, well, let’s call it: “an experience”. Having your period in public when you are not prepared and your best friend is not around to whip out the little magic bag she always carried in her school bag (thank you), is scary. Being unable to afford the adequate sanitary products is an experience no girl/woman should go through. Living in a system which fails to support females with their basic sanitary needs and makes profit out of their biological functions is, well, discrimination.
However, this is the reality we all (some more affected by it than others), face.
I had my first contact with periods when I was about the age of 5. I have always followed my mum wherever she went, so, in the school toilet she took the opportunity, showed me her sanitary towel and explained, that this, becoming a woman through bleeding, would also happen to me one day. It would become a monthly ritual, and I had to always be prepared. Years before I would even hit puberty I was forced to carry the necessary supplies with me wherever I went.
Some (e.g. younger me) could argue that my mother was a bit paranoid, even extreme. The truth is, however, she only feared I could experience this significant part of a woman’s life the same way she did. My mother spend the first few days she bled thinking she was going to die, but too embarrassed to ask for help (I mean, rural Brazil in the 80s? Good luck in mentioning your vagina), until her mother, embarrassed herself, caught up with what occurred with her oldest daughter and with no other explanation than “this will happen a lot” and no dime in hands gave her a piece of cloth and said: “Here. Cut it to the right size. Later, wash it, and use it again.”
Other than having sympathy with my mother when she recalled the hard cloth ripping into the skin of her thighs, the disgust of having to wash out her own blood out of it and the occasional experience of the inadequate material permitting the blood to run down her legs, embarrassing her - a confession of the sin of being born a poor woman - this issue was not one that affected me much. I say much, because obviously, like every other woman have I as well, for my own lack of planning or due to the unregularity of our bodies, felt the humiliation that it is standing/bleeding in a public place with no measures to support our most basic sanitary needs. This feeling of occasional humiliation and discomfort however turns into anger when I see headlines like the ones covering the newspapers two weeks ago of English girls missing school for being too poor to afford sanitary products.
This again brings to mind a question Elmira and I have been asking ourselves lately: How can we reach gender equality if additional financial burden are connected with existing as a girl/woman? The western society is always quick to judge upon development countries and the challenges imposed upon women and girls in these, but very often fails to look deep into their own structures that might be holding females back: the so called "tampon tax" is one of these. Yes, it is a topic most of us have heard a lot about (and many roll their eyes to to this perfect example of the "western feminist making a fuss over small things and demanding one more privilege"). But the affordable, or even free, possibility to obtain female sanitary products is not just one more privilege when once a month your body does what a female body is supposed to do: bleed. Uncontrollably. With no holding back (it might seem unnecessary that I mention this, but just in case some of you -as some dummies on twitter have- hold onto the illusion that women can "hold it back just like pee").
The taxation of a product so necessary to us not only condemns women and girls in poverty to discomfort and humiliation, but can also be seen as a mechanism of a misogynistic capitalist system to keep these women empoverished, and to punish them for being what they are: women. If this taxation is just another measure of brining money to the state to be used in the benefit of the people and not a punishment on the needs of the female body, how come other sanitary necessities as well needed by our non-menstruating peers such as toilet paper are then not taxed as a luxury? And yes, I am aware that razors for men AND women are also taxed as a luxury, but hey, other then the media would like you to believe, having fresh shaved legs is not of the same importance to as being able to function efficiently without having to have blood dripping down our thighs. Allowing women access to the most basic sanitary products and the comfort, well-being and hygiene that comes along with them should never be seen as a privilege. The current failure of this exposes capitalism as lacking the ability to address equality, and exposes a misogynistic system.
The real issue with the taxation and cost of female sanitary products is not the extra pound middle class women have to pay for their period. The real issue is the comfort and hygiene that comes with it being sold to poor girls as a luxury they can't afford, and even more importantly, occasionally leading to girls, fearing the humiliation of their blood stains, missing out on school. This leads to another challenge trapping young women in poverty and taking away their equal right to a bright future.
Recent studies have shown that underprivileged girls can miss in average 4 days of school a month, solemnly due to the fact that sanitary products are not available to them. And even though headlines of the situation of the girls in Leeds have only been going around recently, this is not a new problem, just a not properly addressed one. Due to the embarrassment girls and women face when facing this issue, lack of understanding and support of the community that surrounds them and the low priority such problems have in the face of starvation, death, literacy and many other daily struggles, women and girls have been choosing to remain silent and find their own, often dangerous, solutions.
“Teenagers and young girls are being forced to wrap or stuff toilet paper down their knickers, to prevent them from bleeding all over themselves while at school. The cost of sanitary products are just too much for some girls and their families, and it’s leading to missing school and it’s putting their health at risk.”, says The Guardian. In other cases, families with many girls use pieces of cloth, which are then washed out and shared between the girls, exposing them to a huge risk of general diseases.
Now, some schools do provide free sanitary products to support their students, however, this is often done in an inadequate way. In many cases, the girl has to ask for permission of the teacher -which often gets declined- to leave class and go talk to the nurse as she did not bring sanitary products with her. Once arriving at the nurse, it can be that the girl has to face a questionnaire as to why she did not bring tampons with her in the first place. Besides being humiliating and agonising, all this process leads girls to waste valuable time in class and/or be stuck in an uncomfortable situation, both being obstacles to young girls to reach their full potential. “The minute you have to ask someone for something that you need for your normal bodily function, you're creating a barrier," says Ferreras-Copeland. The attempt to avoid this situation also leads to many girls using their tampons/sanitary towels longer than they should be, which can lead to cervical cancer or shock syndrome.
All of this could be avoided with one simple step: provide school bathrooms with free female sanitary products. Not only will this be a step towards economic equality and an aid to girls in need and to their families, it will also give young girls their dignity and respect back. To critics of this measure that point out state money should’t be used to “afford this kind of luxury”, I can only point of how hugely classist this viewpoint is: It completely ignores the needs of low-income families who sometimes need to choose between spending their last ten pounds on food or on buying sanitary products. Also, while I do see a bigger urgency in bringing these products to schools, I also don’t see why this shouldn’t be extended to offices, workplaces - keeping women concentrated and feeling well while doing their job - and public bathrooms, being a huge help to homeless women who struggle hugely during their period, and also improving the wellbeing of women generally while being out and about.
To those of you who are willing and have the means to get active on this issue, the removal of the tampon tax is currently being discussed. Call/write to your MP and let him know how you feel about this issue. The removal of the tax would be one step towards equality and at least lower the economical burden imposed on girls and women in need. However, we are still far from seeing these products freely available on each public toilet. Let the government know that is something you care about, but in the meantime you can also take action yourself that can have a huge impact on someone else’s situation. Organisations such as The Homeless Period and Action Aid are great to support to help girls in the UK and abroad. If you are not the donation type of person but are still looking for your good action for the day, remember that whenever you have that extra five pounds, you can just buy a box of pads and tampons and leave them on a public toilet, or give them to a homeless woman on the street. Be a homie, help a sister out.

Baskerville Hound
And here goes another series off the marathon list, with a final episode that went off with such a bang one day in November 2013 that I realised this series stole my heart once and forever.
I’ll never stop repeating myself that the title is not a critical research failure on my part and it’s totally intentional, and maybe only needs a better phrasing at most. It’s not the hound dammit, stop side-eyeing me.
Anyway, here comes the episode that wraps it all up nicely, shakes the irony by the hand, tips its hat off and makes you wish there were more, despite the fact that series was finished perfectly.
My friend Sherlock Holmes, huh
Tumblr media
I don’t know why I never really considered this episode anything special when it delivers so fucking much. I don’t know, I did think it was good and all, but for some reason I never gave it the appropriate credit. I think the main reason was that this was the last episode after all, it’s its duty to wrap it all up nicely. Idk what kind of reasoning was that, but for some reason I always overlooked it until I’ve read somewhere that somebody considered this their favorite episode. That was big news for me, like wow, this episode could be actually considered...an episode, that can be liked, not just a some sort of obligatory addition that has to end the series.
Whatever the hell I was thinking, I’m better now, this episode is beyond enjoyable.
First of all, holy shit I was not expecting this.
Tumblr media
I, just as always, totally expected this very genius very scary Moriarty to die at the Reichenbach and call it a day, because really, Moriarty always died at the Reichenbach. Always! No matter the genius, that’s always where it ends and Holmes defeats his “mortal” enemy and that’s it. I’ve seen Moriarty pull out the rope and shit, but I didn’t give it a second thought, because Moriarty always dies.
This fucking series hit me with a truck right there, it was so casual and yet so fucking shocking. I’ve never seen any other adaptation do that, and I’m pretty sure that’s not just my general disregard towards other Holmes stuff. Well, a few months later Sherlock S3 waddled along and suddenly pulled the same card, which was rather interesting since neither show could’ve borrowed the idea from one another. Suddenly the non-existent pedestal was stolen from the new series that did it first, but then this year S4 came along and HAHAHA bitches, we’re taking the well-deserved crown back. WE did it first, and nobody has still done it second, take it away, Holmes!
Tumblr media
He’s still doing the same business as observed in episode four, trapping peeps by card debts, demanding crazy stuff in return. The peep had a cameo in My Dearly Beloved Detective, by the way, as a gambling guy in the bachelor club. Come 30 years and a different adaptation later and he’s still gambling. Don’t do cards, kids.
That was a very cool opening regardless, I think this series always nails that pretty well. Liked the cold colors, the canon exposition of what’s in those Holmes stories, they even squeezed some tiny chasing in, that was very cool in how morbid it went.
Tumblr media
Glad to know Watson and Mrs. Hudson are doing fine, very domestic, very settled.
Tumblr media
Don’t ask me why she’s still going by Mrs. Hudson, I honestly have no explanation for that besides the assumption that they didn’t marry in the first place, everybody stubbornly keeps calling her Mrs. Hudson. I don’t know, really, all the clues are there, but these guys are not this edgy at that day and age to share the bed and don’t share last names.
Well, Watson’s pipes from the first episode make an arc
Tumblr media
As well as the infamous broken English that flashes in every Russian adaptation, good to know it’s still doing well.
Everything to keep the lie afloat, Watson sacrificing his pipes to appeal to the readers and the fictitious look of Sherlock Holmes. By the way, I completely forgot about that, Watson quit smoking there, two and a half years ago at least. Wow. Why tho, but I’m still impressed.
Now, there was the second shook(tm) of the day, the final Mycroft reveal.
Tumblr media
When I realised we’re not going to see his face, I initially thought it’s because Mycroft was so important and so top secret we just would’t have the luxury. Just like Moriarty kind of, this show doesn’t let the audience forget that it’s just the audience that is far from being almighty, so here we go: a person from the highs of the government will not allow to flash his face left and right.
I’d still like to stand by my point, because I still don’t want to accept the real reason being some good old trolling.
Like seriously, when he came in I thought wow, okay, we’re not bothering with the reunion(tm) then, but then the reveal came and I just lost it. No, he wasn’t that important. He just always had the same fucking face. That was just Petrenko all along. That was Petrenko who did his voice, with a deeper baritone, that pic of the sibling in Holmes’ room had two identical dudes on it and Watson even gestured about their faces, but we never noticed, and got trolled for it. That was hilarious no doubt though, but the remains of my initial butthurt are still lingering. For the whole series they were like ooh very serious much mystery pay attention to everything, and then in this episode they just went “lol chill” on everything. I loved it, but not much when they actually fooled me.
By the way, before I forget, Watson’s opening narration. The only narration clearly done in the present tense, which means everything before was written past Reichenbach. Watson’s life did turn for the boring there, even Mrs. Hudson said that.
Tumblr media
She continues to be the wisest of the bunch, always pushing Watson to do the right thing. Still don’t know why he needs to be persuaded, but oh well.
I used to wonder who was who there, but now I know for sure that this certainly Mycroft.
Tumblr media
The baritone, the posture, no quirks, nothing extra. Don’t think he was anywhere near as bright as Sherlock though, no evidence of any sort of extraordinary intellect flashed in this series. Maybe that’s why he won in Watson’s book, having Sherlock’s face and still acting adequately automatically makes him a better person, the plank is just this low.
Here we go again with “lol chill” trolling, now I’m pretty sure the creators were just fed up with pretentious suspense about an event that everybody knows by heart. Random suspicious man that happens to be where the main characters go? There he is.
Tumblr media
Now chill.
Now, the next time we meet Mycroft, THAT was fucking Sherlock. Before everything, before I got the chance to look at his body language and everything, I realised it’s this fucker in 0.1 seconds just by one thing.
That fucking laugh.
That motherfucking laugh that been echoing in this series in its full majestic euheuehe, just this little fucking laugh was more than enough for me to realise The Holmes is fucking back.
Tumblr media
Then there’s the body language of a man having a seizure, the swearing, the drinking, all that, Watson managed to notice that too so that’s no surprise. Holmes the master of disguise that can’t even play his own fucking twin, never mind anything else.
By the way, I’m going to give some credit to this fuck up of a man that sold his country to Moriarty, at least he was conscious about the situation to some extent. At least he tried defending West, after trying to blame everything on him beforehand alright, but you know, it does seem that he suffered and that’s good to know.
And there goes the touching reunion, aka the punching reunion, which I found rather ugly the first time because well, you know, the Soviet series *clears throat* yeah I was still biased back then. Holmes and Watson exchanging insults, yikes. Now, it’s actually pretty funny.
Tumblr media
It’s all true what they’re throwing at each other, but it’s been said many times before and yeah, just losers bickering. Can’t believe I was watching those “friends” burn each other and I laughed.
I can at least finally conclude that their friendship arc also makes perfect sense to me, both of them explained why they stuck to each other in the first place. If Watson’s motives were clear way before that dialogue, Holmes had finally vocalised his reasoning that was exactly what I’ve suspected: Watson is just this lively and curious to ignore him. Holmes brings the thrills in their lives, Watson never allows Holmes go beyond proper limits. They’re polar opposites, but that’s why they’re attracted to each other, since difference lights up their everyday lives. Weird friendship that always made sense. Quite refreshing to witness.
When things get way too heated, Mrs. Hudson slaps some sense into everyone once again.
Tumblr media
Is the in the gang? Is she? Well she should be cause yall fuckers kill each other without her being the only normal one.
Mandatory Reichenbach explanation: yep, bullshit.
Tumblr media
This episode finishes the arc of Holmes’ Laugh as well, gifting us the best one to date. Thank you guys for not clearing the museum set up.
Tumblr media
These two have a great dynamic, actually, they only needed the child to come back to make it work.
Well, the fun didn’t last long, the “late” part from the third episode said hello.
Tumblr media
I knew shit was going to go down when that made an appearance in the third episode, but it didn’t happen then, nor in the seventh episode, so I kind of forgot about it already. And that is when it managed to surprise me.
This scene and the entire aftermath were the things that made me reconsider stuff about my opinion about Adler. I made it clear I don’t like her and her romance plotline was not necessary and it all annoyed me more than anything. Before I started rolling my eyes here, the fucking Big Ben stroke a big one. Well, of course it’s a pity that she lived such a shitty dependable life and was disposed in the end like a dog. Well, her murder was even kind of impressive since it’s the bestest Moriarty’s thing in action, but still. That’s where the drama ended for me seemingly because I’m not with Holmes on that one, but then the rest of the episode made me think about a few things. He was broken, angry, depressed, her death hit Holmes hard. I may say, he even lost in the end, just like maybe his Livanov dad before: Watson’s got everything, Holmes has just lost everything, even though he was the one that worked the hardest. I watched Holmes suffer there, and you know what, I don’t think I’ll ever hate Adler as much as I claim to, she mattered a lot to Holmes and I just have to accept that. She mattered a whole lot, and I might not understand that entirely, but I accept that - it is a tragedy. I think even the episode itself could be split into pre- and post- Adler’s death, because that was some massive final addition to Holmes’ arc. I don’t think he will be the same anymore. A lot of things will, of course, remain, but I think something deep inside him died with Adler once and forever.
Watson counting shots again, always my favorite thing.
Tumblr media
Here starts the interesting part of the case, after the first part of the episode being so weirdly canon. This is where even the most inattentive viewer realises some things were there all along, like the importance of ballistics and random Big Ben pictures in the album.

All this Big Ben showdown was the actual ultimate dream of Moriarty, everything went towards this creation that was there ever since Moriarty worked for the Queen, if that’s what it was. Shitting on her plans every now and then? Alternative scenarios that Moriarty was able to afford. Chasing after some guy’s money? The self-funding that would’ve allowed him to build the weapon. Everything went towards one thing, one way or the other, and it always was Moriarty getting his revenge on the Queen. Such a simple premise, but makes so much sense in so many episodes.
Here comes the ironically cynical part that I’m not sure I’ve managed to translate correctly.
Tumblr media
Mortgages, that’s what it says so far. Bills of sale is what the wikipedia says. Mortgages is what flashes on the actual papers Moriarty reads, but then again, their fantastic take on English is not to be trusted.
Well, basically, what were these papers everyone was so pumped up for? Submarine blueprints, monarch letters? Haha, the fucking government sells the crown because it’s constantly broke. Indeed, that’s what traditions cost, Watson, the government earns extra money by selling the fucking crown of England back and forth and profiting on percentages.
That was so delightful in how cynical the reveal turned out to be, I don’t even care how far away from the truth that take was, I’d still totally imagine them doing that. The pride, the traditions, all those values - all for some mortgage papers where the country itself sells its pride, its traditions and its values. So in the vein of this series and how bluntly it approaches sensitive issues in Russia, big sentiment costs nothing, your own country sells itself. Fantastic, honestly, don’t care about the bullshit meter, I love me some truly revolting politics in never political Sherlock Holmes.
Also, great sibling dynamic, Petrenko is casually great, as always, there’s a clear distinction between Sherlock and Mycroft. Plus, heil the all improving combined shooting techniques, you can’t even tell that this scene was obviously shot separately.
Now, I did talk about the fact that this show barely explains anything and I hope that nobody finds this annoying, because as it turned out, that was always the intention and I will always love that. Take that wanky translation away, Holmes:
The curious reader can't wait to see what happens next? He waits for Sherlock Holmes to come, stretch in his chair, sort everything out and elegantly pull a rabbit out of a hat. And could the reader think of everything himself? He saw everything I saw, and he knows everything I know. So what, now let's see who will be smarter: the reader or Sherlock Holmes.
If you haven’t noticed, the show indeed never hid anything from us, it wasn’t like the reveal in the Hound that I still hate where Holmes pops up out of nowhere and delivers vital information that was nowhere near the reader. Everything was always there in front of you, it was always only up to you to gather it together and make your own conclusions. All the little details, let’s just take one: Watson figuring out that Sholto is the rat without explaining his reasoning to the audience. Sholto appeared everywhere Holmes and Watson went. Sholto’s views. Sholto was the one screaming at Watson to shoot his former comrades. Sholto stopped Gregson with his stick, in probably the same manner as he’d stabbed Small; Holmes elaborates on the nature of the wound in the next scene. All of that was always there, the Gregson scene even got some pretty evident focus. All these details were always there in front of you. Watson figured it out. And you should’ve too, since you’ve seen everything he did, no more, no less.
I always believed that this show leaves enough information for you to make your own conclusions, and I will always love that. Holmes will not do everything for you, and you will not just mindlessly watch him do some shit and then come back with a perfect explanation. Can you think for yourself? That’s the question the series is asking from you.
Tumblr media
Nah fuck the fanservice.
Tumblr media
So, I’m pretty sure the entire clock thing was pretty understandable, but I chewed on it properly today and yeah, it’s quite understandable. There’s the Big Ben, and there’s the Queen’s personal clock. The Queen’s clock is the important one, it’s the actual standard, and that’s what they follow in the palace. Holmes fucks with the pendulum, Big Ben is a minute faster as a result. Twelve hits, Big Beg fires. The actual clock shows 11:59, so the Queen remains behind the closed doors for another minute despite the Big Ben ringing. Since Big Ben was a minute early, the bullet only shoots the doors and gets stuck there safely. The Queen exists when it’s actually twelve. The bullet’s been already shot into nothing. Moriarty sucks dong. British weeaboos sing happy birthday.
Tumblr media
As a little detail, when Big Ben hits twelve, you could actually see the weapon firing, but the Queen is still inside.
Watson had the final attack of this series and that one hit him hard.
Tumblr media
Again, the post-war trauma arc, which will never finish because it never actually vanishes as the narrative pleases. To be honest, here it actually served the narrative as a way of leaving Watson behind to have the Holmes vs. Moriarty 1 to 1, but you know, still nice to know they’ve never forgotten. Poor Watson though.
Thinking about it now, I think I can understand why the creators never fancied the waterfall fight, if that’s what it was.
Tumblr media
Because it’s not their fight.
Maybe I’m going crazy with all those details that aren’t probably there, but I started noticing that Holmes and Moriarty are kinda similar. I don’t want to pull some pretentious “two alike minds at different sides of law” thing, but there were parallels. Episode three, Watson says a whore doesn’t matter when thousands of soldiers are involved, Holmes calls him an accountant. Next scene, Holmes decided to quote Watson saying a whore is not worth the lives of thousands of soldiers, Moriarty calls him an accountant. Episode six, Lestrade says police sounds scary, Holmes replies that they can be bribed, poisoned, killed. Moriarty flashback. Policemen say police sounds scary, Moriarty replies the same as Holmes. Every scheme Moriarty does, Holmes always figures it out, because he can keep up with the man’s vivid imagination when it comes to crimes. Both are scientists. Both wear glasses at the end of the day. Both operate with the only extraordinary thing they have - their brains.
And that’s why I think the waterfalls don’t work in their narrative, a physical fight is not their fight. That was their true fight - sitting next to each other at the top of Big Ben, patiently waiting until their strictly intellectual game outplays their opponent. In this series, Holmes and Moriarty fight with their intelligence, and that final showdown was their ultimate round, and by god it was much more fascinating than the beating.
This is where I started to realise that every character had an arc that I followed to the point that I felt like I knew everyone for years. I knew exactly what Holmes was thinking about before the flashbacks even bothered to elaborate.
Tumblr media
The man went through a lot during this series, he’s lost a lot, he’s suffered a lot, but despite everything he always carried on, and his little brainy game played the most amazing act to date.
Tumblr media
I shed a tear because I’m so proud of him. He deserves all the applause there is. He has indeed won, as many times before, but this day, it was truly his triumph, for Irene and for everyone else.
And in the most ironic way ever, Moriarty just kills himself. See, in the end, Moriarty could only be killed by Moriarty. Fair enough, he’s lost his biggest battle, but his suicide is just as satisfying as it’s...kinda underwhelming in a hilarious way.
What still doesn’t leave my head is Holmes’ last words to Moriarty: “Professor, let’s go”. What was he planning to do? Did Holmes really just win and propose Moriarty to just...leave the clock together for starters? Those words honestly do not leave my mind, that speaks so much about who Holmes is and even how he treats his own achievement.
The final winner, the awkward conqueror of the world.
Tumblr media
All of that happened and nobody would ever find out. Stakes so high, yet so invisible.
A second arc coming to an end, Lestrade and his secrets and weaknesses. I mentioned it a lot how much I love this little scene and how quality Boyarsky’s acting is, the man went from happiness to murder in less than a second. And when he asked about Higgis, Holmes lied to him, and I’ve known Lestrade for so long now I perfectly understand why. I see Lestrade on the outside, but at the end of the series, I feel I can see through him, what breaks his heart and scares him, even though the show doesn’t give any visible clues about that anymore.
Tumblr media
I see you now, Lestrade, and I love you.
Let’s also point out that Holmes decided to lie because he knew what the news would do to Lestrade. Holmes actually cared that much he decided not to break him.
This lady I haven’t mentioned yet, she’s been here and there on tv, but this role is one of the few dramatic ones and I think she played it beautifully.
Tumblr media
Holmes just can’t stop staring, because I think that he realises both of them are going through the same thing.
Tumblr media
Sucks to lose a loved one, not exactly glad to know you’re not the only one.
The show just keeps punching, now since the first time in forever we are refused in watching everything Holmes does, and when he does, it’s a completely sudden beautiful, and very painful performance on his violin, the one that he allegedly never learned how to master.
Tumblr media
The tragic ceases with this freakin guest
Tumblr media
Mrs. Hudson’s face in the background,
The Queen, yes, the actress finishes the Barrymore couple from the Soviet series. Mr. Barrymore was the editor here, Mrs. Barrymore - well, here. Quality canon migration.
The Queen is such a real MVP she actually acknowledges the fact that Watson wrote the stories, and actually applauds him. Then the Queen delivers a burn to Mycroft’s self-esteem, that was great.
Tumblr media
Then the Queen delivers another burn to the audience by pulling out this little file
Tumblr media
That explains a lot :’) I’m sure it does Sherlock my boy :’) I’m really glad you got to know all of that :’) you that have seen everything we did :’) I’m sure you deserved to know the entire explanation :’) we’ll just congratulate you :’)
Well, if so, even from whatever we’ve got I think there’s enough to finish the puzzle. Moriarty probably worked for the Queen one way or another, conflict over the weapon, went into hiding, Queen went on a hunt, she was chasing him and he kept systematically poisoning her life. Whatever in that file would probably be totally mindblowing but :’) whatever we’ve got I guess.
And finally, the Queen delivers her final present and I even went so unnecessary extra as far as to split the subtitles and give “dog” a separate line to keep the hilariousness.
Here comes dat good boi the subject of this episode’s title, Baskerville
Tumblr media
That was legit fucking hilarious, a final spit into the Make Your Own Unique Holmes Adaptation 101 kit that always included the mandatory hound adaptation: here’s your fucking hound. Of the Baskervilles. Woof.
Made even funnier on a meta example since Watson probably got so fed with the dog he wrote the entire story where he gets Holmes to shoot the fucker five times after calling it names.
Also, here goes my final crazy reference hunt of the day, but if that was intentional, then it’s the ultimate shout out.
Hound of the Baskervilles 1983, Frankland’s dog.

Sherlock Holmes 2013, Baskerville Hound, image above.
?????
And finishing the awesomeness exchange, Holmes gifts the Queen the same penny that saved her life.
Tumblr media
Finally, the main arc of this one main character of this show ends up in a single, very satisfying sentence.
Tumblr media
I’m a writer.
If you’d followed his remarks since episode one, that is satisfying beyond belief.
Holmes and Watson’s friendship is sure a weird, but a still an enjoyable one. They can hate on each other however they want, switch from respectable to informal “you” depending on how pissed they are, they can bicker all the want because they are different. But both know they’re invaluable to each other. As the director said, Holmes becomes the Holmes we know because of Watson. But Watson becomes the Watson we know because of Holmes.
How is he going to call his new book? My friend Sherlock Holmes.
Tumblr media
Hi, the accidental ACD of this universe. Of course Watson can name his book whatever he wishes. Because YOU, editor sir, certainly support the final line of this entire series: especially when all those stories are lies anyway.
The credits roll, the music kicks in, and I cry, cry every time because I love this show so much. Whatever there was, it all wraps up nicely, everyone went through an arc, the story makes perfect sense, the series is awesome, and I will never ever regret clinging on it so hard that I decided to subtitle it.
So here it is, Sherlock Holmes 2013. An incredibly unique and fantastic series that sure has changed my life no matter how much I’d want to deny it. Of course, I have a blog about you, just like about the Soviet series, and just like about every other Russian SH adaptation - of course I’ll see you in like five minutes. It doesn’t make another journey any less emotional though.
