I thought I’d share my thoughts on this one, because DEAR LORD, is this a subject…

In my honest opinion, Flag Discourse is completely and utterly stupid, and half of it is just speaking over certain groups. There are real-world issues affecting queer folks that are leagues more important than if xyz flag is “problematic” or whatnot. Yes, there are some legitimately problematic flags, such as the Labrys, but I’m not talking about those. What I’m talking about is stuff like the debacles with the “toothpaste” flag, pan flag, etc.. Speaking of toothpaste, as a lesbian, WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ALLOWED TO SPEAK ON THAT. OH MY GOD, were mlm spoken over to the high heavens on that one. (Fun fact: when I called out a bunch of twitter users for speaking over mlm about this discourse, they asked if I was mlm, which THEY WEREN’T EITHER.) In my honest opinion, I would much rather focus on the worsening discrimination against us worldwide than if a gay person’s flag “copies” my own.

Before anyone comes at me with "But the creator of this flag is problematic" or "But this flag copies that flag". One, just because the creator is problematic DOESN'T MEAN THE FLAG ITSELF IS PROBLEMATIC. Also, even if the flag was problematic, yall know that people can reclaim pride flags right? Second, each pride flag is a copy of one another lmfao. If we had no copies, there wouldn't be pride flags at all. And yes, I am going to say it: Telling people which pride flags they shouldn't use is just thinly veiled queermisia at this point. :/

This may be a hot take, but online flag and label discourse doesn't actually help the community. If anything it just takes attention away from actual queer issues and exemplifies yt queer privilege.

I’m tired of flag discourse. My hot take is we should stop crediting people for making flags. Stop giving people ammo to harass someone and look at them under a microscope for any wrong move to cancel an entire flag for an entire minority group. Once a flag is made, it belongs to the group it represents. It doesn’t reflect the creator.

Emily what’s-her-face should not matter. The fact that she says the word dyke should not fucking matter. She’s just a random-ass lesbian just like the rest of us.

And the labrys flag wasn’t “made by a nazi” for fuck’s sake, that is the worst game of telephone I have ever seen next to “fruit is toxic to ND people.” But even if it WAS made by a nazi, it now belongs to my jewish dyke ass and said nazi can do jack shit about it.

i put the labrys symbol (along with the black triangle) over various lgbtq, subculture, and lesbian flags for personal usage -- but i also wanted to share them as well. feel free to save/use, no credit necessary. i tried finding the highest quality of flags possible put a lot of the OG posts for some of these flags have been lost to time. im going to make a pt. 2 with even more flags as well. i just went on a deep dive into pride flags and have five minutes of being a History Nerd and loving the Labrys Lesbian pride flag cause holy shit guys it's a battle axe used in ancient Greece and dates back to the minoan era and i fucking love the minoans and the amazons used it so it was popularized by feminist groups in the 1970s and the purple is cause of sappho and lavenders how did you not know about this before this is so cool BUT

then that hope fucking dies when you realize it's used by TERFS nowadays and i'm sitting over here, a genderqueer/nonbinary lesbian, and i can't really use it cause even if i tried reclaiming it i know people are just going to think i'm a terf even though im not so i just have to sigh and move on

I dont mean to accuse people of anything but it just occurred to me that it's funny how in the conversations about lesbians being 'erased' when included under the rainbow flag, it was never brought up that gay men were not being represented individually either

Is this something we should have discussed? Or is the whole topic a non-issue?
