I work at a library and i’m just thinking about some little things:

A patron and I recommend each other books back and forth. I’m 26 and he’s in his 70s. He met his wife because of star trek. We talk about Jeff Vandermeer’s Annihilation

Me and another patron both buzzed our hair at similar times and whenever we see each other we comment on how our hairs growing in

We have a couple teenagers that clearly have no where else they can go. Or at least anywhere else they want to be. One of them was telling me about how he’s making a powerpoint of every dinosaur ever. He’s in the hundreds on number of slides

These two teenagers have become pretty close and will go to library events with each other

A woman called and asked me if I could tell her what the date was. I probably think about her every day at work. To have no one else to call for that.

I have patrons who will be very kind to me and then ask to check out books from extremely racist and bigoted authors. I always feel like betrayed in a way idk but sometimes it’s the opposite. I have a man that never really talks to me no matter how much expert small talk I throw at him. He’s been wearing a coat with a Palestinian flag on it every time he comes in

So, I’m by no means an expert on this, being a trans guy (so I’m TME)

But I’ve been looking into transmisogyny bc well I’ve realized I might have some issues I gotta work through, but that’s a different story-

But Jesus transmisogyny is fucking rampant.

I occasionally scroll through terf/radfem blogs to block everyone they reblog from/interact with and I’ve only just realized (and frankly I should’ve realized it much sooner, again that is on me) but ninety percent of what I see there is specifically targeting trans women.

Yes obviously there is some bullshit about trans men, but a vast majority of said bullshit is about trans women. I’ve heard people shit-talking trans women YEARS before I even learned trans men were a thing!

I’ve also seen some people (also TME people, of fucking course) saying that transmisogyny isn’t that bad or that trans women are exaggerating- and just??? What the fuck??

A) not something we can decide, B) do you not have eyes??? C) I am FAIRLY FUCKING CERTAIN THAT THE PEOPLE AFFECTED *BY TRANSMISOGYNY* ARE THE ONES WHO GET TO DECIDE ON HOW BAD IT IS???????

Misogyny by itself is fucking awful but Jesus add transphobia to it- it becomes even worse.

This place is a mess. I’m gonna go do more research and continue supporting and loving trans women.

Leo Valdez is not a fucking incel!

Full disclosure that I am a gringo and will touch on how xenophobia impacted a Latino character. I did check this with my Afro-Latina found brother @jasontoddssuper though!

Apparently people think Leo is an incel because he flirts a lot??? But he isn't! He's a traumatized autistic boy! That and Rick Riordan is xenophobic but I'm going Watsonian right now.

So what do we know about Leo's childhood? His mom died when he was 8. His Aunt Rosa made his family blame him, so he was sent to foster care, where he was neglected at best and abused at worst. He was also often bullied by girls at school.

As another Leo who was ignored and bullied as a kid, I can say from experience you play into expectations to get love. Mine were gender roles, his were stereotypes. Latine people of all genders are often oversexualized and stereotyped as "spicy flirts." Children are often aware of bigotry and stereotypes no matter how hard you try shielding them, and I don't think anyone but Esperanza would care to. If you're what people expect, they can't be disappointed, and maybe if they aren't disappointed they'll be proud. Flirting is also surprisingly affective at getting bullies to back off, which I know from watching my friends and my own tactic of fighting back not doing anything.

Leo learned to be flirtatious because it was how he got out of trouble. Because he was expected to and wanted to be loved. We see that when he becomes friends with other kids who love him for who he is, he gets less flirtatious. Because it was a coping mechanism and trauma response. Because he feels safe on the Argo II.

And I think this trauma explains why Leo "fell" for Calypso. They didn't get along at all, nor did they have any similar goals. But without his support system, without feeling safe, Leo reverted back to how he got by as a kid. He started to flirt. And Calypso gave him love for it.
