Moovin' 'N' Groovin' (Duane Eddy Cover)
This is the first instrumental on the tape Paul gave to Hans Walther Braun that was recorded in June/July 1960 on Forthlin Rd.
I know, I know, you probably want to ignore the instrumentals if you aren't musically inclined, but don't do that. There are some interesting things here.
The song was written by Duane Eddy with Lee Hazlewood in 1958:
youtube
Their cover isn't very true to the original. They have no drums, the bass line is being played on the guitar (we are assuming this is Paul on the guitar, and that the line was too difficult for Stu). The strumming may be John.
There is a bass in their version, but it's Stu plucking out one note at a time.
One of our favorite facts about this song:
Some music scholars cite this as the first true example of Surf music, partly because The Beach Boys borrowed the opening riff for their tune "Surfin' Safari." "Yeah, they used it," Eddy told Spinner with shrugs and a chuckle, "and I never cared. That's just music, sharing little bits of melody and all, no big deal. You know, Bobby Darin asked me about using the title, Moovin' 'N' Groovin', in his song 'Splish Splash.' No problem, I told him."
Given Paul's love for the Beach Boys, the idea that this is kind of considered the birth of Surf music, albeit accidentally, makes it very cool they covered this instrumental on their third ever recording.
The opening vocalization confused us at first. We thought someone said something, but then we realized it's Paul's distinctive two-syllable throat clear. That obviously goes back a long way!
ADDITION:
The cough is much more clear on the Strong Before Our Birth bootleg, but it was confusing on the older bootlegs we had been working from.
The new bootleg of this song is also 30 seconds shorter than previously available versions. Someone was trying to stretch what they had out as much as possible.

Ah yes my favorite musical duo dynamic "We clearly have feelings for each other but we're not gonna act on them and use the sexual tension as fuel for our music and make millions"

I'm a bit surprised I haven't heard of The Saxophones. The style of music is right up my alley and they're an Oakland band which is just down I-80 from me here in Davis.
The Saxophones don't really sound like the current sound emanating from San Francisco/Bay Area. My immediate reaction to this was a Lee Hazelwood/Nancy Sinatra sound. But it really also sounds like Maxwell Farrington and Le SuperHomard. And frankly the instrumentation makes me think of Lawrence Arabia.
This is released by British label Full Time Hobby.

We've Got It Covered.
The original, and still the best. Or is it … ? Some songs you just never tire of listening to and, for me, this quintessentially Sixties classic from Nancy Sinatra is one. It ticks just about every box : fun; bouncy; thumping basslines; understated brass section and a cutsie & mischievous vocal. Written by Lee Hazelwood, the song was a UK #1 hit for Nancy in early 1966 and surprisingly, that…

The following entry, an April 19, 2020 margin note to the March 19, 2020 entry, is meant to put my 5 things comments on 4/19/2020 about finding Erma’s amended trust into context.
4/19/2020 Sunday 2:17pm Rasputin’s Parking lot (where I would go to write in my journal after the coffee houses closed down due to Covid)
‘Listening to Apple play “Best of Nancy Sinatra”. Starts out with “These Boots were made for walking”…and now, they are walking all over this country where so many are uninsured. And, where massive virus related job loss has led to many more uninsured who can’t test for the Corona Virus. 1 in 100, 3 million out of 300 million USAers have tested.
“Strawberrys, cherries and an angel’s kiss in spring”. Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood belt it out on Apple play.
3/19/2020.
So, at maybe 5pm at Max Muscle, we weren’t sure if Stanislaus County would lock down. I said “maybe your store will stay open”. But, by 7:12pm, there was a statewide shut down. California is closed. So is Max Muscle. Earlier at Max Muscle, before the shut down, I bought 12 protein cookies and a tub of banana split whey powder. And, I bought a dozen white roses at Trader Joe’s, where some shelves were almost empty, like the bread shelf. I told the Hispanic female clerk checking me out that all anyone needed to get through this was white roses.

Daily Prompt #JusJoJan Jan 24: Ideal
When I saw today’s #JusJoJan word, ideal, a song popped into my mind: My Elusive Dreams. The Tammy Wynette and David Houston version was a No. 1 country hit in 1967. The song has been covered umpteen times since then. My favorite is the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood version. This elusive dreams in this song represent the ideal of the perfect life the man is obsessed with finding. The woman…

I do love me a crooner. But after coming across R.W. Hedges a few months ago, I've really gotten back into crooners like Lee Hazelwood and Neil Hannon/The Divine Comedy (I've never really gotten "out" of the Divine Comedy.
These two releases from Maxwell Farrington & Le SuperHomard (Australia and France, respectively) are available as a fairly priced bundle from the French label Talitres.
