Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These wholly original and shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge. Introduced and contextualized by bestselling author Stephen Graham Jones, these stories are a celebration of Indigenous peoples’ survival and imagination, and a glorious reveling in all the things an ill-advised whistle might summon.

I edited an image from midjourney to get a kinda nice portrait of Ciríaco from my short story Lechuza. Canonically he has a bunch of dark birthmark-esque marks on his body and face, but I included one without it so you can better see his face and my edit :)
You can see the raw AI image here

REVIEW
Never Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology
Compiled and edited by Shane Hawk and Theodore C. Van Last Jr.
This collection of twenty-six short stories provides an interesting and different look at some issues I have never thought about. In reading through reviews of this work I found that some reviewers  were able to relate to more of the stories than other readers and some readers were unable to relate much at all. Most went into reading believing the stories would be scary, horror stories, or put them on edge – some did, and some didn’t, in my opinion.
The stories that had the biggest impact on me were:
* KASHTUKA by Mathilda Zeller in which a young woman is pushed by her mother to go with someone she doesn’t want to be with to cook and help with a party. A ghost/scary story is told briefly and seems to allow a Kashtuka to materialize and kill a few people – the twist at the end was a grabber indeed.
* WHITE HILLS by Rebecca Roanhorse looks at what a woman might do to maintain a better quality of life than she was raised in. I hated Marissa’s mother-in-law and husband and really questioned the decision she made at the end of the story.
* SNAKES ARE REBORN IN THE DARK by D.H. Trujillo’s story brought in a bit of magic and touch of horror while talking about respecting and honoring ancient wall/cave paintings.
* BEFORE I GO by Norris Black dealt with grief and loss and made me hope I never run into Mother Night.
* DEAD OWLS by Mona Susan Power is a cold story with ghostly encounters that I hope to never experience myself.
* NAVAJOS DON’T WEAR ELK TEETH by Conley Lyons was dark and disturbing with a main character I wanted to shake and tell to spend time with someone else…someone safer, less abusive, and better for him…that had a darker ending too.
* WINGLESS by Marcie R. Rendon dealt with two boys in a foster care situation no child should find themselves in. I cringe thinking about that story and hoped at the end they both found a brighter future somewhere somehow.
There were a LOT of stories and though I couldn’t relate to all of them, the stories above were the ones that stood out the most to me and will linger longer.
Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for the ARC – this is my honest review.

And the most populated group is...
Don’t confuse it with popular, as my least favorite group by far from these types are the Humanoids, my favorites are the Aberrations probably.
Plants in mythology are just so damn hard to find. (And then still, real plants from mythology such as Inulpamahuida and Ya-Te-Veo make GREAT non-plant creatures in my project...)
I’m fine with these numbers, I love that dragons are rare in my fantasy world, and of course, plants are mostly non-hostile landscape decoration, only some variants grew into man-eaters and slayers.
I’m kinda surprised Undead are so low in numbers, I must have cut away a LOT of undead, also I’m happy I have such a great number of Constructs, I really love that group more and more!
EDIT: I’ve cut away 5 creatures (Kraken, Carabosse, Poltergeist, Kasa-Obake, and Veo) so I now have exactly 300 creatures to work with. At least I hope I counted them without error.
And again an error, still 305 creatures, so I’m sorry Ammut, Zitiron, Motelo Mama, Mokele-Mbembe and Issitoq, but you 5 are the weakest links now.

May 23rd - "The Gauntlet Part 2" - As Dr. Light and Suna turn the Robot Masters against each other, Mega Man defeats and unmasks his arch nemeses, Lord Obsidian...
I decided to snip out that last part. I don’t watch this particular show so I don’t know if it’s important, but it sounds like the description outright spoils his identity.

May 26th - "Boxman Crashes" - Lord Boxman crashes at Venomous' lair and inserts himself into his villainous affairs.
"All in the Villainy" - KO, Rad and Enid are confused to find the villains are more interested in battling each other than them.

I’ve already reported on this, but I’ll list them here for good measure. The sole pair of episodes of PPG 2016 will air on 4:30 PM.
May 5th - Watch It! / Man Up 4: The Donnyest Game

tell us about your original stories :DD
Currently I have 2 entirely original short stories, Tszashou and Lechuza!
Tszashou is a really kinda soft piece just about Lâii, a character of mine, growing up and her relationship with nature and faith and love. I originally wrote it for a short drabble prompt and I really liked it so I edited it and posted it in its own post. The piece also nicely features the Ixaili language which I created and a bunch of worldbuilding I did about the Ixaili people.
Lechuza takes place in the same place as Tszashou, actually, the same island. Xáou Lūá is a small set of 5 major islands
Tumblr media
The green island on the right is the setting for both stories, actually, just in Very Different parts.
Lechuza is more horror-based, following Ciríaco, a young adult who cares for his younger half-siblings following his mothers death. Ciríaco's father is presumed to be dead, after he disappeared when Ciríaco was a child during La Caza de Las Lechuzas (The Hunt of the Lechuzas), the day of the year where there's a total eclipse. In his searching for answers about his father's disappearance, Ciríaco follows in his footsteps.
Lechuza was actually the story which incited the creation of Ngiachpaun and the Ixaili language, the original version years back was intended to be part of a characters backstory of mine for a game and I ended up growing that into so much more and also a university degree minor in linguistics.
Lechuza is also based on the stories I grew up with about Lechuzas. Lechuza translates to barn owl, but its a common belief/superstition in some parts of mexico and the south-west united states that Lechuzas are evil shapeshifting witches and/or omens of death and illness.
My Untitled Ixaili Project has a handful of posts about the Ixaili language and bits of worldbuilding. I have a bunch of old documentation on my computer and various online archives that I haven't gotten around to organizing and posting to Tumblr, so I always appreciate questions that give me a chance to post some lore I have or to ponder and create new bits of lore.

For one night horror films showcased at Mission theater
MISSION — Demons and serial killers were some of the main characters displayed in the short horror films shown Saturday at Border Theater.
Edinburg native Jose “Joey” Olmeda, founder and event organizer, said the screening is to showcase films and give exposure and recognition to local filmmakers.
The collaboration began during the spring when Olmeda posted on social media asking filmmakers to submit videos to his page because he wanted to have an outlet for independent directors in the Rio Grande Valley to showcase their films.
The news quickly spread to local directors like Joe Rios and Abel Gonzalez and they submitted a film. During the submission period, Olmeda also received an unexpected surprise phone call from PSJA Teacher, Frank Zepeda who said that his daughter Manelly wanted to participate.
Manelly, a San Juan native, recently starred with Mexican actors, Eugenio Derbez and Salma Hayek Pinault in the 2017 film, “How to be a Latin Lover.” She showcased two films; “La Lechuza” and “Somos Sus Amos.”
“Toe Tagged: A Short Horror Film Festival” was a collaborative effort of short horror films made by independent filmmakers from the Rio Grande Valley in conjunction with others from across the state and shown to an audience of about 30.
Olmeda, who has his own production company called “J.A.R.” films, which he began in 2014, showed three films.
“Since I was a kid, I liked watching movies; I guess I was a film fanatic. My brother and I would make movies and capture it through VHS; it became my passion and interest.” Olmeda said. “During my freshman year in high school, we began putting more effort and learned editing and practiced through trial and error.”
Olmeda added that his inspiration into filmmaking and making horror films came after watching “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Another independent director, Edinburg native, Quint Rogers, showcased his film, “Serial Killer,” which included suspense and laughter.
“I took something old and kind of revamped it including the stalker and with the twist of comedy,” Rogers said. “I read this article about this person that was stalking people and its fetish was looking through windows and so I thought I would follow that and kind of change it to Halloween theme.”
Stephanie Baggett, one of the stars of the short film, said it wounded up being really funny for a comedy. Baggett, who has done other short films, said it was through a mutual friend that got her in contact with Rogers and when they met, she felt comfortable after reading the script and decided to play the character.
The film was shot in five hours and filmed in his aunt’s home, Rogers said.
“I just want to shine a light in the Rio Grande Valley and make it important,” Olmeda said. “I wanted to make it like the way it is in Austin and I don’t plan to give up.”
