Quality Furniture: Buying Lounge and Fine Bedroom Furniture
The benefits of quality furniture such as fine bedroom furniture and lounge furniture lie not only in its durability, but also in the way people perceive you when they visit your home. You may have done it yourself when visiting: looked at the furniture and drew an opinion on your hosts according to their choice.
Your furniture states who you are and how you live, although, while choosing quality furniture can enhance your status, that is not the main benefit of purchasing it. The craftsmanship of a high quality suite covered with leather is not just in the leather, but primarily in the way the structure of each piece is crafted and put together – the leather is only the cosmetic coating on the quality framework.
Quality Furniture is Built to Last
Quality furniture is built to last. Notwithstanding that, fine bedroom furniture, or any type of high quality furniture in fact, can be damaged just the same as any laminated flat-pack furniture – and sometimes they are even easier to mark.
Most people believe that chain stores will sell them quality furniture, but that is not necessarily so. Generally, the old saying that you get what you pay for is true, and a fair number of these stores will also sell laminated particle board and plywood pieces at economic prices. For genuine quality furniture such as fine bedroom furniture crafted from solid wood, you must buy from a craftsman.
Quality Furniture Stores
There are several stores that will sell you genuine quality living room furniture stores in austin texas, and fine bedroom furniture made from solid hardwood, such as oak or teak, or with a hardwood base but a beautiful walnut veneer. Rosewood is another beautiful wood, as are maple and the beautiful deep red mahogany. Some prefer pine which is softwood with a clean, fresh natural look, and while not as resistant to damage as hardwood, many prefer it for kitchen and bedroom furniture.
Search for manufacturers such as Stickley Furniture, American Craftsman, Sherrill furniture, The Custom Shoppe and Southwood furniture or any of a number if similar firms that you can find online, and you can be sure of purchasing high quality furniture that will last as long as you will. You should never be in a situation where you think a piece of furniture looks high quality, but are wondering whether or not it is in fact just chipboard, particle board or plywood with a glued veneer or laminate. If reputable firms such as those above offer that, you will be informed of the veneer and the base wood – no attempts to trick you!
An online search of what is available on the internet is an excellent way of finding good quality custom furniture. Look for fine furniture manufacturers, or companies that distribute their work. You will not find high quality furniture in flat-pack format. When you purchase fine bedroom furniture, each piece will be delivered in its correct form and not put together in your home with screws and plugs, many of which might be missing!
Real Wood Shows its Quality
You can tell real wood from its smell, its feel and the glow that only comes from well oiled or waxed hardwood. Leather has its own feel and smell, although it's not so much the leather that counts, but its quality. Many types of leather are so thin that you can easily stick your fingers through them – and don't believe anybody that sells you furniture saying that it cannot be damaged.
Fine furniture can be damaged – it can be knocked, scraped, stained and scratched just the same as any other furniture. If somebody tells you that this table will resist all knocks and scratches then they are either being economical with the truth (lying) or trying to sell you a synthetic utilitarian piece. Genuine wood is vulnerable. Only thermosetting resins can resist knocks and scratches.
The same considerations are true whether you are purchasing furniture from Chicago, Miami or from furniture stores in Atlanta. Atlanta furniture stores are just as likely to sell you cheap lounge furniture as stores in Chicago. How can you tell? How do you know if you are buying a genuine hardwood dining table or one made from particleboard and cheap veneer?

How to Identify Genuine Fine Furniture
First check the legs. No cabinet maker would ever fashion a fabulous table from solid mahogany and then put some screw-on legs under it! The legs will also be solid - and made from the same wood as the table is built from. Check beneath the table: all cheap mass-producers will veneer the top of the table but not the underside.
If the wood at the bottom and the top look different, then you are being conned. Check the joints: high quality furniture should be made using proper joints: mortise and tenon for rails and dovetail joints for drawers and cabinet sides - absolutely not using commercial plastic joining pieces or metal or plastic corner joints, and certainly not just screwed or nailed together.
Lift a chair upside down and examine it: high quality chairs will have a canvas on the bottom, or at the very least proper webbing and springs on the seats to offer support and comfort. Cheap furniture will have a plywood base and a slab of foam! https://kokania.com/product-category/fashion/vanity-mirror/
Quality furniture, whether in the form of fine living bedroom furniture or quality living room furniture, can make an ordinary room look good and raise your esteem in the eyes of your visitors.
Learn how to distinguish between the mass-production furniture stores and the quality furniture manufacturers such as Stickley, Southwood, American Craftsman and Sherrill.

Turbo Maximus: Derek Kimes’ boosted Yamaha XJ750 Maxim
There are many gems buried in our Bikes of the Week column, but occasionally a machine pops up that deserves a fully-fledged feature of its own.
A week ago we stumbled across this remarkable Yamaha at the Forged Invitational show. ‘Turbo Maximus’ took top honors at the Jekyll Island event, which is not surprising when you consider the XJ900 engine transplant, the properly engineered turbo conversion, and the delicious race replica bodywork.
A few days ago, owner Derek Kimes wheeled the Yamaha into the studio of the man who captured the atmospheric images from the show—photographer Steve West. And so we can now dig into the story a little more.
Derek is a relative latecomer to the world of bike building. After serving eight years in the US Navy, he left the beaches of San Diego and moved to Atlanta to pursue a degree in engineering. While studying, he started working on bikes to learn hands-on skills, and found out that Bryan Fuller’s shop was located nearby.
“My savings were drying up and I needed a part-time job. I sent an email to Bryan and to my surprise, he responded. I started working part-time, sweeping floors, taking out the trash and doing small tasks to help the guys at the shop.”
“I am so grateful that Bryan gave a guy with no real fabrication or welding background a chance to prove himself at his shop. Without that chance, this bike would never have happened.”
Derek spent many nights and weekends in the shop, working on his skills after hours. But despite that, this is the first and only bike he’s ever owned.
“I bought it used, in completely stock form, in 2005,” he recalls. “It’s a 1982 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim, originally painted black. I enjoyed riding it but wanted to make it better.”
Then Derek fell in love with the XJ750R (0U28) [below] that raced in Japan in the 1984 Suzuka 8 Hours—the only XJ series bike that Yamaha prepped for the track. And that’s where the inspiration for this restomod came from.
“I thought to myself, how would an OEM build this? I have learned to respect the amount of engineering that a manufacturer puts into a model; matching the quality level of OEM parts is a very difficult task.”
So Derek decided to transform his old XJ750 into a modern, fuel-injected, boosted superbike. “People said I was crazy—why do that to a tired old XJ? I wanted to prove them wrong.”
The 750 engine came out, and a 1983 XJ900 mill was swapped in. It’s been been fully rebuilt by NASCAR engine builder Jordan Hersey of Atlanta, GA, with 9:1 custom forged pistons, adjustable camshaft sprockets from an FZ750, and titanium valve springs from Kibblewhite.
A custom lockout clutch designed by Eric Isaacson of E-FAB in Des Monies gets the power to the back wheel, and Derek has swapped in a larger stator from an XJ700 Midnight Maxim. This bumps the amps up from 18 to 26—because every amp counts when converting to EFI.
Ditching the carbs was no easy task. There’s no off-the-shelf kit, and no real guide to help with installation. “There are literally miles of wires, so packaging was a real challenge,” says Derek.
“I had to add a fuel pump, fuel filters, and a dozen or two sensors. It took time, but I was able to route the system so that it’s mostly hidden from the eye.” The heart is a MS3Pro Engine Management System, and the ECU controls the turbo too.
Monitoring the fuel ratio is essential, which is usually done by measuring the temperature of the exhaust as it leaves the combustion chamber. But in a race environment, there is often one sensor per cylinder, and that’s the setup Derek has chosen.
The throttle bodies are from a 2003 Suzuki GSX-R600. “These are a great choice, because each individual body can be spaced to line up with your ports. The entire system communicates via CAN BUS to an AIM MXS dash.”
The turbo system itself is extremely neat. “I wanted it to look like the bike was designed originally to be turbocharged. You see so many turbo bikes with the turbo hanging way out, or the charge tube is wrapped around the engine.”
To avoid this, Derek chose a Borg Warner S1BG turbo. It’s big enough to give him the 200 horsepower (on E85 fuel) that he wanted, but small enough to tuck in between the frame and front wheel.
To hide the intake charge pipe, he’s cut a channel on the bottom right side of the tank, so it can travel straight back from the intercooler. Above the turbo there’s a custom Bell intercooler—which left a problem with locating the oil cooler. So the oil lines are now routed underneath the bike to the rear, where an Earl’s oil cooler sits just in front of the back wheel.
In 1983, Yamaha made its own turbo XJ: the XJ650 Seca. And its oil pump had a scavenging port, designed to suck the oil from the turbo back into the engine to avoid oil pooling. It was a direct, bolt-in oil pump swap from XJ650 turbo to the XJ900.
To continue with the OEM theme, Derek has used ‘AN’ fittings for almost all the hoses—a challenge with the many tight spaces in which to plumb. He’s also used Jiffy-tite quick-connect ‘dry break’ fittings on the fuel tank for easy removal. The exhaust system is custom, though: gases exit via stainless steel headers leading into a titanium Akrapovič slip-on muffler.
Despite the extensive engineering on the engine, the front part of the frame is original. Further back, Derek’s fabricated a new tail section and swingarm, converting the rear suspension to a monoshock setup using a 5-way adjustable piggyback rear shock.
It’s not just a grinder job. Derek had the frame laser scanned, measured and straightened at GMD Computrack for precise alignment, and powder coated for protection.
Then he installed forks from a 2015 Yamaha R6, upgraded with Traxxion Dynamics AK-20 cartridges. And to prevent wobbles when the full 200 horsepower kicks in, there’s an adjustable Öhlins steering stabilizer.
The quality of finish on the bodywork is just as astounding as the engineering. The front fairing is a F1 replica by Airtech Streamlining, heavily modified to fit with the help of fiberglass specialist Patrick Henry of Atlanta.
Gustafsson Plastics made the windscreen, but Derek fabricated the riveted-on aluminum fins at the base, and the bezel around the JW Speaker LED headlight. Which is offset to one side, just like the one-eyed XJ750R racebike.
Keen eyes will spot that the tank is from a Yamaha XS750. Derek relocated the mounts to install it on the XJ750 frame, and then topped it off with a Racefit fuel cap. The tail unit is a completely custom one-off though, with a seat upholstered in Alcantara and black leather.
The paint is from the talented Mike Lewis of Gary’s Body Shop in Atlanta. Harking back to the mid-80s racing XJ, it’s one of the few cases when the old cliché holds true: it makes Derek’s blown beauty look fast even when standing still.
Top-spec rubber helps to keep the shiny side up: The 17-inch tires are Metzeler’s Racetec RR K2 compound all round, and there’s a 5-inch wide rear wheel with a FZ1 caliper and FZR 1000 brake rotor.
To call ‘Turbo Maximus’ a restomod would be selling it short. It’s a re-engineered masterpiece, and one of the few occasions where mechanical brilliance is matched by a keen eye for aesthetics. We can’t wait to see what Derek builds next.

Iris van Herpen's Otherworldly Design Inspires Futuristic Couture in Pittsburgh
In a grand, lengthy gallery at the Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) in Pittsburgh, a legion of exquisitely dressed mannequins stand at attention, displaying seven years' worth of innovative, otherworldly haute couture designs by Iris van Herpen, the Dutch fashion star known for her striking, futuristic aesthetic. Van Herpen marries science and technology, as well as artistry and meticulous handicraft, in her ethereal designs. The intricate ruching on one metallic-hued dress evokes invisible electromagnetic waves whirling through space. Delicate acrylic threads protruding from a skirt resemble the threadlike tentacles of a jellyfish.
"Everybody who comes in this gallery sort of stops dead, because it is so unusual and beautiful and strange," Rachel Delphia, CMOA's Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, tells Creators. "Once you're captivated, there are so many points of entry." Van Herpen swept to widespread acclaim when six of her designs were included in the Metropolitan Museum's lauded Manus x Machina exhibition in 2011. She's dressed celebrities like Björk, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Lady Gaga in her eccentric frocks. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion at CMOA is a stop on the designer's first North American tour, co-organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and the Groninger Museum, the Netherlands.

Delphia says Pittsburgh is apt destination for van Herpen's designs. An early-20th-century industrial powerhouse, the city's football team is still named for its reputation as a steel town. Though the steel industry folded under government restructuring in the 80s, sucking some of Pittsburgh's economic vitality with it, the city is becoming a hub for makers. The curious, resourceful nature of van Herpen's designs reflect that spirit.
"If you're anybody who makes things, [van Herpen's] use of materials, her craftsmanship, the structure, the architecture, the incredible complexity of these garments, that's something you can talk about—even if you have no interest in fashion, per se," Delphia says. "The amount of digital fabrication she uses, from laser-cutting to 3D printing, is another point of entry."

To engage the local creative community, CMOA selected 10 artists/design teams to participate in a fashion show at The Ace Hotel Pittsburgh. Across its properties, the hotel brand prioritizes supporting local artists and cultural institutions, like CMOA. They challenged the designers to create two "fashion meets technology" looks, keeping with van Herpen's ideology and craft. Many of the artists, who ranged from fashion designers to architects to metal sculptors, worked on their non-traditional ensembles at the TechShop, a membership-based, open-access, DIY workshop and fabrication studio, which will soon have 10 locations across the US. TechShop offers makers, amateur and expert, access to machinery and know-how they might not be privy to elsewhere. Creators visited the Pittsburgh outpost, and we witnessed members taking a screen printing class, using a laser cutter to etch some sort of zombie design onto pint glasses, and bending sheet metal with a frankly intimidating hunk of machinery.
"The significance of having the designers work on their pieces at TechShop demonstrates the democratization of the creative process, the blending of old and new technologies, and the sense of community and collaboration that can develop around the arts," Bill Gearhart, the General Manager of TechShop Pittsburgh, says. Consequently Material Worlds, the fashion show at the Ace, featured designs utilizing 3D printing, laser-cutting, metals, and other non-traditional fashion techniques.

Design duo Zain Islam-Hashmi and Brandon Darreff were among Material Worlds's non-fashion designers. They're both architecture students at Carnegie Mellon University, which abuts CMOA, and participating in the fashion show gave them a chance to infuse structural design know-how into another artistic medium, blurring the line between construction and fashion.
"[Our] designs used cement and plaster, which are otherwise stagnant in the built environment or in sculptural applications, and added the challenge of exposing the materials to gravity and movement. We welcomed breaking and cracking of the forms as a juxtaposition of pristine and geometric casts with ones which are damaged and more organic. Burning was implemented to highlight the fractured forms and the beauty in deterioration and rubble," Islam-Hashmi and Darreff tell Creators.

All of the Pittsburgh designers brought an industrious spirit to the challenge, echoing van Herpen's ongoing interrogation of science and manufacturing. "Fashion can be absolutely beautiful, and it's fun to look at the lifestyles of the rich and famous, but what really drew me to Iris's work, is in addition to representing couture, there are these incredible concepts underpinning these collections. That felt, to me, to be right for Pittsburgh," Delphia says. And if the ingenuity on display in Material Worlds is any indication, the city is in for an exciting creative evolution.
