How to Make Tarot Spreads
Learn how to make your own tarot spread. This is based on my personal practice so feel free to customize it as needed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've written the steps out in a linear manner but they are not numbered. The reason for this is because the process itself is rarely linear (for me) and I tend to bounce between steps, changing things as I go until I've got the finished product.
On to the creation process!!
Tumblr media
Think about a life event that you wish to have guidance on (or wished to have guidance on at the time). Or perhaps a situation that left you with many burning questions time and time again. These will be your main topic for the tarot spread.
You can also choose a topic that's easier and less hard-hitting like a new season, natural phenomenon, or celestial cycle (ie. the new moon in Leo, Taurus season approaching, the last frost, etc.) You can also pull from pop culture to create a tarot spread.
Pick a number, something manageable. I usually go between 3 and 7 cards, personally. Sometimes the number of cards you use will also be relevant to your spread if you hold certain beliefs about numbers. If this is the case then feel free to leverage this when creating cards!
Think about questions that the situation left you with or things you wished you'd thought about while going through the event. You'll use these to create prompts for the cards.
Choose a pattern, aka how your cards will lay once they've been pulled. This is the "spread".
Put it all together and you've got a spread! You can choose a title or not, I usually choose the title somewhere within the creation process as they just sorta come to me naturally. Sometimes the title comes first and I work from there.
Example:
Topic: I've been dealing with a breakup recently so that will be my topic for the spread. I'll walk you through my process.
Questions someone has when going through heartbreak are things like: What went wrong? Is this for the best? What did I do wrong? What did I do right? When will I feel ok again? What do I do now? Etc.
Pulling the Cards: Of course, you can choose the tried and true shuffle-and-pull method of pulling cards, but you can also get more creative with it.
I've chosen a "sandwich" method, where you shuffle the deck and find a specific card, then you pull out the card directly in front of and behind the card in question.
What do I think of when I think of tarot and breakups? The three of swords, a card notorious for being about heartbreak.
So, we'll look for the 3 of swords and pull out the card in front of and behind it. I will shuffle again and pull the 3rd card from wherever in the deck it calls to me.
Pattern: I want to keep with the theme of the 3 of swords so I plan on the 3 cards being pulled laying above and slightly angled, similar to the look of the original 3 of swords.
Prompts: Questions someone may have when going through heartbreak are things like, What went wrong? Is this for the best? What did I do wrong? What did I do right? When will I feel ok again? What do I do now? Etc.
Using these questions and emotions, I can come up with the card prompts.
Put it all together. If you're extra, like me, you can create a graphic or draw up a design for your tarot spread! You can find the finished product of my tarot spread here:

TAROT TIPS #1: THE BASICS ON GETTING STARTED
♡ understanding your limitations
as with any talent, reading comes more naturally to some than it does for others. you can think of reading as being similar to singing. to be a good singer, you need to practice and develop the technical skill, however, some naturally just have a better set of lungs on them. it is important to understand that reading may be harder for you than it is for others, that it may take longer to learn and there could be limits to what you can read on. vice versa, you could find that reading comes to you quite naturally.
♡ understanding your strengths and weaknesses
play to your strengths and steer clear of your weaknesses if you are newer to reading.
example: if you feel you have trouble understanding people or their motivations, find people confusing or simply don’t know many people you might not want to start with personality readings (or accept this may not be an easy type of reading for you in general).
example: do not read on an industry or career you don't know much about.
♡ know what you are really asking
for the most part, your intentions will be understood but there are some ways things may become confusing, try remembering these tips below:
1. make sure you are targeting your question to what you actually want to know.
example: don’t ask what someone thinks of someone else if you want to know is how someone feels.
2. when asking vague questions, expect answers that may not resonate immediately.
example: if you ask, “what is coming up for me?” you will get whatever answer is deemed most important, which may or may not be something within the immediate future and could even seem unrealistic for your life. rephrase the question to suit your needs, i.e. focusing on a specific area of your life or by adding a specific time frame.
example 2: instead of asking, “what are the strengths of my future spouse?”, you can try rephrasing the question to: “what are the strengths of my next future spouse?”
♡ being honest
approach with honesty, respect and objectivity to get it in return.
additionally, do not change the meaning of the cards. getting scared of the cards halfway through readings or becoming wishy-washing with the meanings of cards in general will influence your readings. you will get confusing answers if you are applying confusing definitions.
♡ adapt to the deck you are using
use your intuition to understand the different imagery on different decks since it can add nuance to their meanings.
♡ ask questions until the answer is clear
don’t be afraid of pulling clarification cards.
pull clarifications cards with questions if it feels needed (e.g instead of asking for a clarification card of someone’s strength you may want to try asking: why is this a strength or how is this strength used on a regular basis).
if the reading is creating questions for you during it, ask those questions.
check during the reading if you're on the right track until you are more confident or feel you can trust your intuition.
at the end of a reading, ask if the reading is correct.

A Message for the Collective
Hi loves,
First, thank you so much for your interest in my private readings. There is much higher demand than I anticipated. This is such a blessing. Thank you for trusting me with your energy.
Repeated messages in the private readings have been:
Oracle card: the deer and oat – healing
Aura Healing
I sense that the collective is embarking on or needs to embark on a healing journey. This is some advice from spirit:
connect with nature - go on hikes or visit parks
Eat healthier food - an emphasis on grains
Explore aura cleaning meditations - for some of you this could help speed up your manifestations
Focus on finding the root of some of the key issues you face - try journaling or speaking aloud to yourself - finding your independent voice is so important
Give yourself the time and space to heal - healing is not linear, nor is it instantaneous
Be kind to yourself and those around you
Sending you peace, love and light,
Sierra xx

Beyond the Guidebook: Understanding Tarot Card Symbolism and Interpretation
Tumblr media
When reading tarot, understanding the symbolism behind cards is crucial. It not only adds depth to your readings but also helps you uncover the deeper meaning of the cards and how they relate to one another. Let's explore the significance of repeating suits, numbers, imagery, orientation patterns, and the placement of Major and Minor Arcana cards in tarot readings.
Tarot Card Suits and Their Themes
When a single suit dominates or numbers a reading, it emphasizes the theme associated with that suit: Cups: Emotions, relationships, and matters of the heart Pentacles/Coins: Material wealth, finances, and practical matters Swords: Thoughts, conflicts, and challenges related to ideas Wands/Rods: Inspiration, creativity, and actions or projects
Tarot Card Numbers and Their Significance
Repeating numbers can amplify the energy and significance of that number's symbolism.
Ace: New beginnings, opportunities, or a fresh start Two: Balance, choices, partnerships, and decisions Three: Creativity, collaboration, and growth Four: Stability, structure, and security Five: Change, challenges, and conflicts Six: Harmony, love, and healing Seven: Spirituality, introspection, and assessment Eight: Power, ambition, and movement forward Nine: Completion, fulfillment, and reflection Ten: Endings, culmination, and a sense of closure
Interpretation of Repeating Symbols in Tarot Cards
When you spot recurring symbols, patterns, or themes in multiple cards, consider the following for interpretation:
Consider the Context: Analyze the positions of the cards with repeated imagery. For example, a repeated symbol that appears in a past position could represent past experiences or influences being carried into the future.
Amplification of Themes: Repeating imagery can amplify the themes associated with that symbol. For example, if you have several cards featuring roses, it may highlight the importance of love and beauty in the situation or the need to approach it with care and affection.
Storytelling and Narrative: Repeating imagery can create a narrative within the reading. It can be seen as a sequence of events or a progression of ideas. Consider how the symbols relate to each other and how they tell a story or convey a message.
Personal Significance: Depending on the reader's intuition and the querent's personal connection to certain symbols, repeating imagery can have personal significance. It may trigger specific emotions or memories, offering a more personalized interpretation.
Card Orientation Patterns
If you choose to read reversals, the significance of card orientation in a tarot reading lies in its ability to add layers of interpretation to the cards.
Mostly upright cards: When the majority of the cards in a reading are upright, it often signifies a sense of internal clarity and ease. It suggests that the primary influences on the situation come from external sources and are generally aligned with the card meanings in their traditional sense.
Mix of upright and reversed cards: A balanced mix of both upright and reversed cards offers a holistic view of the situation. It reflects a dynamic interplay between external and internal factors. This combination highlights how external circumstances interact with your inner world and mindset.
Mostly reversed cards: When most of the cards in a reading are reversed, it typically indicates that the energy related to those cards is encountering obstacles or resistance. It can suggest that certain aspects of the situation are blocked and may require a closer look or adjustment. Reversed cards may also point to hidden facets of the situation.
Major and Minor Arcana Placements in Tarot Readings
The placement of Major and Minor Arcana cards often determines how the card's energy is expressed within the context of the reading.
The Major Arcana cards represent significant life events, archetypal energies, and deep spiritual or psychological themes. The more Major Arcana cards that appear in a reading the most of these forces are at work in the situation.
The Minor Arcana cards focus on day-to-day matters, everyday experiences, and practical aspects of life. Court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King) often represent individuals or personalities. Their placement can reveal people involved in the situation or specific characteristics or qualities they bring to it.
By understanding these aspects of tarot card interpretation, you can unlock the secrets hidden within the cards and provide more meaningful readings for yourself and others.

The Ace of swords -  overanalyzing tarot pt 1
the the suit of swords in tarot entails the exploration of the mind; the different ways we engage with ideas, concepts, principals and the different ways we go about communicating thoughts to other people. naturally we should begin with the ace of swords.
Tumblr media
One of my fav books on tarot which actually happens to be a guidebook to its corresponding tarot deck, Tarot Apokalypsis, written by Erik C. Dunne and Kim Huggens, had this to say about the ace of swords:
‘‘What must come before word, what must come before thought? What must become before memory? what cannot be seen, yet must come before seeing? I am speech, but i am silent I am spoken of yet I am ineffable. I am the most basic principal necessary for the step from nothing, to choas to something.’‘
The ace of swords is the abstract coming in the form of a thought, its takes the messy, fragmented parts of an idea and gives it the structure to be formed into an idea. Results from a 2020 study showed that people may have 6,000 thoughts per day, yet not all of those thoughts are given meaning. Not all of them get the chance to develop into something, but the ones that do form the basis of a belief.
The ace of swords represents the thoughts we give power to over others. the crown the ace of swords is often paired with throughout different decks is supposed to signify victory, but in this context it represents the status we give thoughts as opposed to the 6,000 other thoughts that pass through our mind a day.
Divinatory meaning- upright and reversed
reflect on the thoughts you give power to every day. what ideas and thoughts do you give meaning, and how does the meaning you attach to these thoughts impact you. how do your fleeting thoughts form the basis of a belief? this card appears when you’re starting to understand something for the first time, when you’re building the foundational knowledge to understand a larger concept or idea.
in reversed, it gives me the impression of failing to understand the thoughts that pass you by or lacking the foundational knowledge of a concept or skill. it denotes that you’re needing to get back to basics of something and ensuring understanding of it before continuing.
The ace of swords as a unifying principal
tarot of apokalpysis attaches the ace of swords to the idea of cosmology and how we individually understand how the world came to be. it says;
‘’this assumption of cosmic order is necessary for further assumptions to be made, and its upon this foundation that we build everything else. This refers not only to religion or myth, science to too must build its own cosmology, (or more appropriately, a paradigm) within which is may refer to the laws it has set and decide upon the questions it wants to answer ’’
The ace of swords being connected to this idea of a cosmology or paradigm gives it a more sophisticated interpretation, allowing us to understand the cards that follow the ace of swords. For example, if the ace of swords is a paradigm that sets the basis for understanding a larger topic, then the two of swords is differentiating between ideas and comparing different paradigms to one another. allowing them to compete for accuracy.
The big bang theory is an example of a paradigm, it allows us to understand how the world came to be. The creation story told in genesis, the norse myth and saga of creation, these are all ways in which people form their basis of understanding of the world and our purpose in it.
The ace of swords could be the assumptions we have that allow other assumptions to be made on top of that, forming a foundation for an opinion or paradigm. It’s the pre-requisite understanding of a concept, for example, to understand algebra you would have to understand multiplication, division, adding etc. To understand chemistry you have to understand an atom, its qualities and the various forms matter takes.
Ace of swords paired with other cards
The ace of swords is a hypothesis in early stages, not yet tested or verified. if the ace of swords becomes paired with the ten of swords, its a hypothesis thats been prematurely dismissed or falsified before it had the chance to grow.
if paired with the 7 of swords, its a person selectively taking what they feel is true about an idea or paradigm, and leaving what contradicts their ideas, instead of adopting and integrating the whole idea to fit the truth. for example, Christians using the bible only when it fits their worldview, not when it contradicts it.
when paired with the tower, its an idea that disrupts an existing structure or assumption. Think Kepler revolutionizing how we understand the planets orbit around the sun, developing the three laws of planetary motion.
Astrology of the ace of swords
the ace of swords refers to gemini, libra and aquarius. All three signs interact with the development and communication of ideas in interesting ways. All three signs are constantly thinking, analyzing, comparing ideas, and creating new ones. Aquarius is innovative and wants to disrupt models of how we think, gemini allows space for several ideas to exist at once, and libra wants to be able to choose between ideas without hurting anyones feelings.

Beginner Tarot Tips #1
“Tarot is a journey, and and it takes time, trust and intuition,"- Nancy Hayes
1. Use a deck You Like!!!
•There’s a huge misconception that you can’t buy your own deck,That’s not true. You can and you should buy your own deck(s), you’ll find a deck you connect better with that way. (You can even create your own)
2. Find a way to make the cards unique to you.
• Put them in a special pouch or box, or put them in a prominent place in your home. Spend 10 minutes a day just shuffling and getting to know your deck, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to bond with your deck
3. Calm down
• You’re learning a new skill, give yourself room to make mistakes, you can’t memorize everything in one day
4. Learn the cards meanings but leave room for your own interpretations
• everyone sees cards a little differently, see what meanings/interpretations stick out most for each card and write them down
5. Learn a simple spread and go from there
• big spreads are harder and more confusing to interpret, so stick to small 3-4 card spreads while learning!
Tumblr media
6. Read for yourself before giving other people readings
• get accustomed to your deck and reading for yourself regularly, it’s the best way to learn!
* IT IS OKAY TO CONSULT YOUR GUIDEBOOKS AND JOURNALS ALWAYS*

*taps mic* This thing on?
It’s been a long time. But the other day, I got an email from someone, asking me if the Apprentice Tarot was ever coming back. To be honest I really moved away from it during the pandemic. The logistics of everything was too much for me at the time.
For those who didn’t see it or don’t recall, it has upright and reversed meanings, elements, and suit associations on the cards to help the new reader in getting into their practice right away. I originally made it as a deck to help myself learn, and I was so happy that I got to help some other people learn too.
So I’ve decided to re-release it here, permanently this time, as a print-on-demand deck. It doesn’t come with the rigid box anymore in order to keep costs down given how expensive PoD can be, so it has a purple velvet deck pouch instead. But it is otherwise the same deck, and if you’d been wanting to get ahold of one, well, it will remain available here if you’d like.
Hope everyone made it through ok.

Note
What does the “bottom of the deck card”represent in tarot? I’ve heard it means the general mood of whatever is being asked, is that right?
Possible meanings of the card at the bottom of the deck
Tumblr media
1. Hidden aspects:
The card can show what aspects of the reading are hidden or what the querent/their person is hiding. This could be thoughts, feelings, worries, perception, etc. It can be the thing that is motivating the action of the main spread.
2. Extra message:
It may not be what a person is actively hiding, it can just be an extra detail/info you can consider that can help you understand the main spread better. It can just be something small sometimes.
3. The core or summary of the main message:
Some readers use the card as the core of the reading or a card that sums up the entire reading. It's similar to saying "basically" or "in essence, this reading is about this"
4. The tone or energy/mood:
You can also see the card as the general energy of the reading; eg. pentacles = rigid or measured, swords = focused, detached or cluttered, cups = emotional or heavy, fire = fiery or intense. I'm talking about the feel of the energy here. If you got a fiery card here, it could give a fiery tint to every card in the main spread, it could feel incessant, flashy, stubborn-- which, for example, can cause the Justice card in the main spread to be more ruthless or sharper when it speaks. It's just basically combining different elements. Justice = Air. What does Air + Fire combination remind you of? Wildfire. Wind can push the flames and more things can get burned. It can be ruthless and unforgiving.
5. Advice:
I guess it can also be taken as advice. If it can represent the core of the reading, it can also show you how to solve it. If The Emperor is talking about the querent's self-empowerment or the situation that makes the querent feel powerless, the advice may be that the querent should step into their power and take back their control.
Conclusion
Different readers reads it differently. I use it however I feel called to use it at that time of the reading.
Example
I did a reading on jealousy, the cards in the main spread showed maturity and light approach/attitude to jealousy, but the bottom of the deck was 5 of Cups. This could imply that although the person may act maturely as indicated by the cards in the main spread, they are probably hiding wounded feelings on the inside and are more emotionally affected by the situation than what their demeanor may be showing you.

The Emperor
Typical symbols found on The Emperor card are a throne, ram's head, orb and scepter, and an eagle.
The Fool happens across the throne of the Emperor by accident. He approaches and becomes enraptured at how each and every command given by the Emperor is immediately obeyed. Not only are his subjects happy, but his Empire is well taken care of and prosperous. At this moment, the Fool knows that he needs to learn the secrets of the Emperor. He asks and receives this reply - "Through strong will and a solid foundation or law and order." The Emperor continues on to explain that while being creative and instinctual is all well and good, any great leader must also be direct, alert, brave, and aggressive. The Fool ponders this lesson and adds it to what he has learned from the ones before and continues about his journey.
In many decks, the Emperor is seated on a throne, which emphasizes his power and superiority over others, except for the Empress. The Emperor is associated with the Ram, or the zodiac sign Aries, and follows after the Empress to show that he does not view himself as someone to boss her around. He provides for both her and their unborn child. Some often equate them to Mars (the Emperor) and Venus (the Empress). He is filled with enthusiasm, energy, and determination, but can also find himself being controlling, impatient, and demanding.
When upright, this card can symbolize authority, establishment, structure, or a father figure.
When reversed, it means domination, excessive control, lack of discipline, and inflexibility.

The Celebrity Tarot [1/?]
As I continue to learn all 78 cards in the tarot deck, I decided to try something new to help grow my connection to the cards and their meanings. I’ve chosen to connect a celebrity to each card, based on both the meaning of the card and the personality of the celebrity.
O. The Fool - Olivia Rodrigo
The Fool represents you as you strike out on a new journey. They’re filled with adventurous energy and a zest for life. As Olivia Rodrigo’s music career jumpstarts with a fervor, I think she embodies the joy and spirit of the Fool.
I. The Magician - Rihanna
The Magician represents you with all the tools you need to succeed. You have the passion of the Fool, but with a wisdom and growth that comes from time and experience. Rihanna knows what she wants and she goes for it. She succeeds because of her attention to detail, her internal and external resources, and her strengths.
II. The High Priestess - FKA Twigs
The High Priestess represents your intuition, your mind, and your connection to the Other. FKA Twigs shows her heart on her sleeve with her music, and shows that she is authentic to herself. She trusts and knows herself best, which reflects the inner power of the High Priestess.
III. The Empress - Beyoncé
The Empress is a maternal, tender, and divine feminine figure in the Tarot. She is powerful and protective of those around her and those whom she cares for. With the success of her career and her status as a legend, icon, and mother, Beyoncé encapsulates the tenets of the Empress.
