update time: had to take out the masks again to measure their dimensions for someone i'm emailing about them and decided to take a closer look at the "print" depicting the galungan holiday that came with them and it's actually an original watercolor from batuan. 😭 i can't find any other work by this artist in online collections but the style and timeline matches up for somewhere in the 30s-60s. it will be sent with the masks.

#i've learned a lot about batuan art today #it's just one village but its iconic style has influenced all indonesian art! #it developed after western contact introduced new painting methods #but stayed very traditional in its subjects #i wonder if the masks came from there too #i'll find out!

i did it guys, i turned my thai drama obsession into my bachelor thesis

#well not yet #i actually have to write it first #but i talked to my prof today and she officially approved so!!!! #i plan to write about the difficulties of translating thai into english when it comes to pronouns/particles/honorifics #and if i have enough word count left then i want to also ask the question of how the translation might be in german #(or how it might differ from the eng translation. how the translation strategies might differ) #and i'm gonna base my analysis on the eng subs of gmmtv series fkjfjfjrhd #my prof loved the idea she was super interested fkdjjdjd #she did also mention that she recently started learning indonesian so i guess she'll probably be curious about #whether there's anything in my thesis that'll be familiar from her indonesian studies hahaha #or at least there's a curiosity about asian cultures/languages that she has which will def help since she's overlooking + grading my thesis #i can't believe i'm ACTUALLY gonna analyze thai drama for uni. #RAHHH ITS SO MUCH EASIER #learning spanish as an english speaker u get easier vocab to remember and grammer more similar to english #but in exchange you give up any hope of knowing all the verb conjugations #and its yhe opposite for Japanese #Indonesian is the best of both worlds #the dutch influence makes the grammer and vocab a lot more similar to english #AND its verb conjugations are easy #I love you indonesian mwah mwah ur my favorite language ever. All those other bitches can burn but not u I love u #SO SAD tho. bcs I cld never survive in SEA w/ the heat and humidity

I went over my work besties house for lunch and she introduced me to her friends as her work daughter

#they were all very nice and welcoming #but they all spoke indonesian so i got left out sometimes (they did keep switching to english to catch me up though and i appreciated it) #and at one point when we all kind of split up so they could manage their kids #my besties 12 year old daughter came over to me and started telling me about school. how she was learning guitar. #and that she was starting to collect my littlest pet shops after finding her older sisters old ones #i was a bit anxious going because i only knew my friend and her kids but it was really nice :) #i was the last to leave so me and the bestie still got some one on one time #she did leave to pick up pizza for the kids like 10 minutes after i got there #leaving me alone with strangers #but they were lovely and i survived #personal
