Ok but what if another turning point for the world power dynamic was the Suez Crisis of 1956. France and England were adamant that they control the canal while the US and USSR were (surprisingly) collaborative in their demand for a cease-fire in the region. I can just imagine Alfred storming into a meeting room with a storm in his eyes yelling at these two raggedy fucks to quit their dumb-ass behaviour. Giving them an eloquent lecture in front of the world. The room full of nations, still recovering from all the events of recent years, going quiet while both Arthur and Francois (for probably not the first time) start reevaluating their roles in the evolving global landscape.
Arthur would likely have felt a mix of anger, embarrassment, and surprise. He had grown accustomed to being an influential world power, and being confronted so forcefully by Alfred, especially as his son, would have challenged his sense of authority and superiority. Despite his pride, Arthur would also have acknowledged a sense of resignation, knowing deep down that the world was changing and that his empire's dominance was waning.
Arthur has a complex relationship with his children, and Alfred holds a special place in his heart as his favorite child (I'm sorry but it's true). He might recognize Alfred's achievements as a reflection of his own influence and guidance, feeling a slight mixture of satisfaction and pride in seeing his protege step into a position of power. Seeing the United States, a former colony, rise to prominence and challenge the established powers could evoke a sense of pride in Arthur as he recognizes the legacy of British influence and ideals that have shaped the nation.
Arthur does recognize the accomplishments of his "wayward son" to a degree. (what a loser)
Francois would definitely feel anger. Even stronger than Arthur, I think. The failure and backlash of the crisis would have strongly wounded his pride. He would display a certain stubbornness and reluctance to accept the changing dynamics of power, more so than Arthur. His pride and desire to assert France's influence might have led him to defend his nation's actions during the Suez Crisis, even in the face of mounting criticism and geopolitical realities. (huge loser)
The Suez Crisis, a focal point of tension, becoming a catalyst for transformation, shaping the dynamics of power and diplomacy for generations to come. In that meeting room, the world witnessed the birth of a new era, where old empires bowed to the demands of a changing world.

One thing I love about the episode "Tonsil Trouble" is that it showcases just how nonchalantly Cartman can mess with Kyle. Their entire trip, everything he does and says is so purposefully done to so he can watch Kyle malding. ESPECIALLY so in the "I'm not sure I'm HIV positive" scene.
Kyle is SO that one kid that is smart enough to know that someone is purposefully saying something to mess with him and get a reaction out of him, but dumb enough to continue arguing and getting pointlessly upset despite that.
When Cartman is going on his spiel about HIV in front of the airport guy, which he words in a way he knows will annoy Kyle.
Kyle just can't let shit go. He has to make sure this random ass guy knows that it's Cartman's fault, because that's just so in character of him. And by doing so he ends up saying something even more embarrassing for himself which in turn ends with him malding even more. And Cartman is just quietly watching.
In the other scene, Cartman doesn't even need to say anything, the announcer is saying it all for him, and Kyle will have the exact same reaction.
And what's funnier is that this litteraly continues into adulthood, with literally the exact same joke. Cartman purposely doing shit that he knows will annoy Kyle, Kyle malding, telling whoever is in the room something completely out of pocket because he is the only one that doesn't realize how it sounds because he needs everyone to know that Cartman is the asshole, and then he ends up making an ass out of only himself. (Litteraly word for word what happens in Post Covid)
And at Magic Johnson's house, even when Kyle starts yelling, Cartman keeps acting like he doesn't understand why Kyle is upset, while continuing to do the thing that is making Kyle upset. Because he knows that him acting innocent will piss Kyle off more than anything. And he is counting on the fact that Kyle is going to keep arguing, cuz like I said Kyle can't let shit go.
Like Cartman says in Imagination Land, "God damn it Kyle you've never walked away from anything in your life".
Both of them are relentless in their own way. And that makes their dynamic hilarious.

I’m listening to The Royal Art of Poison by Eleanor Herman. And just. Wow. So many “medicines” involving feces. Or basically cannibalism. And I’m not talking about the practice of using bits of mummies as medicine, though that was definitely happening, too.
Also, those fancy houses, palaces, and castles? Piss everywhere. Especially in stairwells. I spent yesterday basically hissing in disgust at work over every gross thing being covered. And don’t even talk about laundry. I already knew about urine being used as part of the laundry process, in addition to tanning. There’s a reason perfuming was such a big deal. Everything had to have smelled horrible.

TW for racism and genocide of Native Americans
Today I learned that the original "The only good _, is a dead _," was "The only good Indian, is a dead Indian." And it really sucks that now I know this information.
Looks like it's speculated to be attributed to one specific Union general due to his actions, but it was more likely just a common anti-Native sentiment of the time held by a lot of the settlers, not just one person.
Like I know I hear 'the only good snake, is a dead snake' most often since I love being in snake discussion groups, which also sucks because I love snakes, and they shouldn't be killed.
But I've also heard like 'the only good Nazi, is a dead Nazi.' And like, I So agree with that, fuck Nazis, but I don't want to think about the original phrase being reclaimed like that for a laugh, no matter how much I agree that Nazis suck.
It should stay as horrifying and sickening as 'the only good Indian, is a dead Indian' in my opinion. I think we should retire the phrase entirely and just note that, that was the origin of it - the continued genocide of Native Americans during the 1800s when settlers were eager to get rid of us so they could claim property for themselves while forcing us into insufficient reservations as US America expanded westward.
This book I'm reading describes that the usual retaliation for the theft of a cow would have been the execution of an entire Indian village. One specific horrifying example given, is from accounts of a traveler that joined a group of Mexicans pursuing Indians (Chumash) in possession of stolen horses. They come across a group of some old Indians, women and children, drying the horse meat. Every last one was killed, and their ears cut off as proof for the priests that they made every effort to retrieve the horses.
This shit is so sickening. They were hungry and trying to survive.
It also describes how the accounts of Indians from my tribe before the mission system were all about how generous and welcoming they were. (Though, it was through the lens of the Spanish who saw us as ideal candidates for conversion because of this.) Then after the collapse of the missions and post-assimilation, the accounts simply describe the Indians' drunkenness and disorder. What did you expect???? You assimilate a group of people so they're entirely reliant on you (the rigid structure of the mission system and the dismantling of their previous tribal villages), and then suddenly turn them out to a world without their previous villages and social order. Of course they're going to struggle and suffer and abuse the drugs (alcohol) you introduced them to.
I hate this so much.
The book also mentions how, during the mission period, anyone who ran away from the missions to go back to their original tribal lives, would be dragged back to the missions and cruelly punished with restraints, lashing, or stocks, and they couldn't understand why because punishment was exceedingly rare before Spanish rule.
Ugh. Anyway.
I'm going to bring this up any time I hear anyone mention that phrase, because the horror of that time period should not be diminished in its modern reclamation. ('Diminished,' because I, a 30yo Native American, did not even know the origin. I thought it was a modern phrase. Our local Native history was always glossed over in school to focus on the mission system. I didn't even learn of my tribe's revolt until like 2016 when I went to a lecture my tribe held.)
I get that reclamation is supposed to be like a good thing, to take away the power of its original use, but I personally don't think that's appropriate for this phrase that was used as a rally for genocide.
Maybe I'm just being a sensitive baby, though, who knows! I'm crying while reading a history book about my tribe. This shit really hurts deep, though. It always has.

So um... after some conversations with a couple people, I built a LSDLN/SOTS server. It's small and intended to be a safe space for people of all levels of interest. I'm not going to promote it wildly, but if you're one of the lovelies who has found me because of the gifsets and whatnot, you can always ask me about an invite.

I started reading Billy Bat manga by Urasawa Naoki (u may know him as the guy who did Monster) and jesus christ its wild. Absolute experience. Judas and Jesus are in it, so are ninjas, so is lee harvey oswald (technically at least 3), theres a bat thats satire about how evil mickey mouse and disney are, there's lying cartoons galore, there's the civil rights movement, the oppressivr terror of the ku klux klan and the structural damage of segregation and fucked up laws, and the pervasiveness of advertising and the coca cola company ("golden cola") there's real events sprinkled with gratuitious fictional shit about manipulative God Billy Bat (or perhaps "administrator/guide to the human race"), a scroll that could control the world, Fake walt disney has hired killers, the looming brutality of imperialism and corporations buying out poorer areas, killing in other countries and breaking laws and whatever else is needed to acquire what they want, there's a cartoon dog kennedy assasination, a baby kevin inherits the powers of an older kevin, there's ninjas and priests, there's a small town out west full of cowboy larpers who are this comic artists biggest fan club, a secret agent Smith with a heart of gold (one hopes), a teenager named jackie whos seeing visions, there's a good and evil fake "mickey mouse" bat but frankly theyre probqbly both evil cause either way they lie and manipulate to get people to do what they want, judas cameos not only in his jesus arc but as a little kiddo, and like. Im not even halfway done. Einstein JUST showed up.
