while were on the subject how long was jason dead for / how long before came back to gotham
Alrighty boys it's time for some MATH by a person who is very bad at math:
First things first, Jason died on April 27th at the age of fifteen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman: A Death in the Family
He remains dead and in the coffin for six months. (There is a comic that shows Jason in heaven, but this comic came out in 2001 which is long after Jason should have been up and about if we follow the timeline, but I’m chocking this up to Jason still being dead as far as the writers knew at the time.)
Tumblr media
Green Arrow (2001) #7
Six months after Jason’s death, he is resurrected when Superboy-Prime punches reality in Infinite Crisis and unravels certain events in time, one of these events being Jason’s death. Instead of changing it so the death never happened, Jason’s decaying corpse is reanimated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Jason wakes up in the coffin and digs himself out with a belt buckle from his funeral suit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Jason still retains the injuries from the crowbar and explosion, so he suffers from some pretty intense brain damage which has him stumbling around Gotham for twelve and a half miles, completely catatonic. Some people find him and take him to the hospital where he falls into a coma.
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Jason stays in the coma for a year before he wakes up. Still relatively brain-dead, his instincts kick in and he escapes from the hospital.
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Then Jason spends a year (or five months, if you prefer the timeline established in Red Hood: The Lost Days) on the streets, running entirely on instinct from both his Robin training and from the years he spent on the streets before being adopted by Bruce.
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Talia al Ghul gets word of Jason being alive and has him taken to the League of Assassins compound. He stays there for another year, still catatonic and running solely on instinct. His body is in perfect fighting shape, but his mind is mush.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
To restore his mind, Talia dunks Jason in the Lazarus Pit, healing all of his injuries (and erasing all of his scars, according to RHATO).
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #25
Tumblr media
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) #50
Jason spends further time with Talia, studying from a multitude of trainers Talia hires to prep Jason for when he confronts Bruce. We can assume this takes a year or so? It’s said that Jason spends more or less a month with each trainer, so I’m going with a year. Over this time, Jason hones his skills and stokes the fire of his resentment for Bruce not avenging him by killing Joker/replacing him with a new Robin.
Tumblr media
Red Hood: The Lost Days #2
Tumblr media
Red Hood: The Lost Days #4
Then there’s that weird thing where Jason and Talia sleep together, but we’re ignoring that. Jason takes off for Gotham to go beat up his dad. He meets up with Hush and teams up with him in exchange for telling him Batman’s identity. This is a moment fans tend to get confused about: Jason was there for the 2003 Hush storyline. Yes, Clayface was pretending to be Jason, but only for the end of the fight with Bruce. Everything before that was all Jason. He kidnapped Tim, confronted and fought Bruce, and then fled, leaving Bruce to assume that the whole thing was a ruse and Jason was still dead. However, Bruce knew from this point on that Jason’s grave was empty and his body was missing.
Tumblr media
Batman #618
Jason lies low in Gotham for a bit before the Under the Hood storyline starts in 2004, which I assume is anywhere from six months to a year in canon? It’s unclear exactly how long the gap is, but Hush happened a year prior in real time, so I’m working around that. It’s finally revealed to everyone that Jason is back from the dead, he confronts Bruce, tries to kill the Joker, etc. And the rest is history.
Tumblr media
Batman #648
Taking all of this into account, we can determine that Jason regains consciousness roughly 3.5 years (or just 3 years if you go by the RH:LD timeline) after his death, he returns to Gotham 4.5 years after (or just 4 years), and Jason being alive is revealed to everyone around 5-5.5 years after his death, which would make him roughly 19-20 years old.

Are Tim and Cass (Cain) actually close in canon or is that a fanon thing? Feel free to ignore this ask if you'd like<3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tim and cass are close and do consider each other siblings, but they aren't as close as fic writers often make them out to be where they're together constantly and are all touchy-feely with each other. i'd say they're equally as close as tim is with the rest of his siblings (aside from damian), and tim is tied with duke as being the brothers that cass is closest to

Do u have evidence of Tim being suicidal or depressed in canon? Thank you!
(being depressed and being suicidal are two different things despite often being linked, so i'm going to answer these one at a time)
Tim being suicidal:
Not quite canon?
This is left up to interpretation for the most part, but I can definitely see signs of Tim being potentially suicidal at certain points of his Robin/Red Robin career:

hello! i want to write a tim-centric fic but stay true to his canon characterization. what are things i should avoid putting in the fic? how exactly does fanon!tim differs from canon!tim? what are some misconceptions about canon tim? what are tim's core character traits?
fanon:
coffee addiction
socially awkward
outsider in the batfamily
left home alone to starve while his parents vacationed constantly
canon:
falling asleep everywhere
nerdy but also the most popular kid around
depression but not as severe as fics make it out to be

Tim's always struck me more as passively suicidal rather than actively so. He's not /trying/ to get himself killed, and it's not like he'll just go down without a fight, but he has at some point accepted that the cape will kill him. Considering that he became Robin because Jason died (at what, 15?), I think it's safe to say that Tim honestly thought/thinks he'll die young, whether he wants to or not. I doubt he really thinks about his future cause he doesn't really believe he has one.
You're definitely not wrong, at least about Tim not planning on living for very long. It's canon that, when asked how he pictures himself as an adult, the first thing Tim thinks of is that he'll be dead by then.

Do any of tims friends even know he tried cloning them?
Okay, so Cassie and Conner both know about Tim's "cloning Conner back" phase:
Tumblr media
Teen Titans (2003) #37
And Tim confessed the cloning stuff to Conner after he came back to life:
Tumblr media
Adventure Comics #3
And the Titans know that Future!Tim cloned Conner and Bart back to life in the Titans of Tomorrow timeline, but I don't know if Bart himself after he came back to life knew that a version of Tim cloned him in the future.

okay but imagine bart and tim hanging out and bart says something like “when we’re in heaven make sure your house is next to mine so we can share a pool okay” and tim without thinking about how it will come across looks bart dead in the eyes and says factually “you’re not going to heaven”

even the downward framing of the mask is the same???? tim's V goes deeper than dick's, and of course there's the cape and red robin symbol added on, but tim's unternet suit is clearly inspired by his big brother's uniform 🥺

As the knower of all things Batman Comics - any chance you’d be willing to give a rough timeline of Jason coming back to Gotham and what he does? I know about all these events - the fight at Titan’s Tower, him confronting Batman with Joker, him shooting Dick, taking over Crime Alley - but I don’t know what order they happen I ?? Are there important things to his return timeline that aren’t in that list? I can’t figure out where to find the relevant comics (or even which comics are the relevant ones). :(
(Alright so I'm gonna base these on publication date and hope there wasn't too much time-wonkiness making it so that some events were before or after certain other events in spite of the dates and all that)
1. Jason returns to Gotham — It's unclear exactly when this happens, but I want to say it's roughly 4-4.5 years after his death.
2. Jason confronts Bruce and slices Tim's throat before "revealing" it was actually Clayface the entire time (no it wasn't) — Hush was published from Oct 2002 - Sept 2003, so the time between that and the 2004 Under the Hood storyline I assume to be anywhere from six months to a year. Comics are confusing.
Tumblr media
Batman #618
3. Stephanie Brown "dies" in War Games (Oct 2004 - Jan 2005).
Tumblr media
Batman #633
4. The Red Hood appears in Gotham — There is no official source for this, but we can assume that Jason has made at least a few appearances at Red Hood pre-Batman #635 while planning his takeover of the city and showdown with Batman.
* I should also mention that Dick is still recovering from a leg wound when the Under the Hood storyline begins, as well as recovering from the traumatic event of Tarantula killing Blockbuster, which is a big part of the reason why Dick is in Gotham at this time and around to help Bruce when the Red Hood surfaces. That, and the fact that War Games just took place and they lost Stephanie. Jason picked a really stressful time to start his Gotham takeover lmao.
5. Jason kicks Bruce out of his own company and takes control of all his toys lmao (Dec 29, 2004).
Tumblr media
Batman #635
6. Jason takes control of Gotham's gangs (Dec 29, 2004) — This is the first official appearance of the Red Hood that we see. This is the event that swiftly puts him in the spotlight as Gotham's newest and potentially most dangerous criminal. (This is also where all the "eight heads in a duffle bag" jokes come from.)
Tumblr media
Batman #635
7. Jason reveals that he is Red Hood (June 22, 2005) — Bruce finds out the Red Hood is Jason and is given the evidence to prove it. We can assume that the other Bats (Dick, Barbara, Tim, etc) are informed shortly after this encounter, if only for their own safety than Bruce's generous decision to keep them in the loop for once.
Tumblr media
Batman #641
8. Jason attacks Tim at Titans Tower (Nov 9, 2005) — Jason takes a brief break from fucking around in Gotham to go beat up his kid brother in ugly orange leggings. Then he returns to Gotham to mess with Bruce and Black Mask some more.
Tumblr media
Teen Titans (2003) #29
9. Bludhaven gets nuked (supposedly killing Dick at first, but we all know he's fine). — This particular comic showing the event was published on Jan 26, 2005, eight days after it was first shown in Infinite Crisis #4. This information doesn't really matter that much, but it makes me sound smart.
Tumblr media
Batman #649
10. The infamous Jason/Joker/Bruce showdown happens (Feb 22, 2006).
Tumblr media
Batman #650
11. Jason disappears, then resurfaces after a year or so to cosplay as his big brother (April 12, 2006) — Jason lies low for a long while after that final confrontation with Bruce until the One Year Later event has passed, skipping us forward a year in time. Dick returns to Bludhaven to find Jason having lost his marbles, acting as a murderous version of Nightwing and being a general nuisance to everyone <3

Hi! You seem really knowledgeable about Batman so I have a question for you. I’ve been reading a lot of fan fiction lately, especially about Jason and Tim. I’m curious about how accurate the depiction is of their relationship to each other. Did Jason really slit Tim’s throat at one point and try to kill him more than once? I’ve been seeing that a lot, but I can’t find any canon depictions of it. How bad is their relationship in canon?
Jason indeed did slit Tim's throat! :)
Tumblr media
Batman #618
Jason used Tim as bait for his showdown with Bruce while he was pretending to be Hush, and during the standoff he gave Tim a friendly lil slice to the throat. It wasn't a super life-threatening injury, though. As Tim put it: "I'll need stitches. But Catwoman stopped the bleeding."
Tumblr media
Batman #618
And Jason did indeed try to kill Tim more than once! Three times, to be exact! (Before the reboot, at least.)
There was during the Hush storyline, as I already explained above. Prior to that, there was also the Tim vs Jason fight that took place in Titan's Tower shortly after Jason revealed himself to the Batfamily in UTRH and decided to pay his replacement a visit.
Tumblr media
Teen Titans (2003) #29
Then Battle For the Cowl happened, and Tim and Jason went head to head yet again, this time as their own versions of Batman. Jason stabbed Tim with a batarang and left him for dead, going on to tell Dick that Tim was dead as a doornail when Dick came to save him in his own batsuit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman: Battle For the Cowl #2
So yeah, you could say their relationship wasn't great Pre-52. Jason attempted to recruit Tim as his partner a few times, as if Tim would suddenly become all buddy-buddy with a crazy murderer (which is what the writers tried to make Jason into at the time).
To be honest, I find their relationship during this time hilarious? Jason keeps asking Tim to be friends and Tim keeps reminding Jason that he thinks he's the most annoying person in the world lmao.
Jason: ok i know i tried to kill you a couple times and i resent you for replacing me and also i'm kind of psychotic at the moment, but do you wanna like, hang out? 👉👈
Tim: full offense but i would literally rather die than spend ten minutes with you
Jason: sure that's cool man i get it *proceeds to try and shoot tim's face off*
It's such a fun dynamic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin #177
Tumblr media
Batman: Battle For the Cowl #2
Jason: *asks tim to be his bestie while he is actively carving tim up with a batarang* (Sir please read the room I'm begging you.)
So that's pretty much how their dynamic was until the New-52 went and made them besties for whatever reason. Jason just really really really wants Tim to join him, Tim really really really wants Jason to leave him alone and stop being crazy. It's a blast.
