A picture I did a little while ago of one of my Kal-Sharok OCs, Jurika!  I don’t have a super thorough backstory for her just yet, but my tentative idea is that she is a member of a delegation of Kal-Sharok dwarves that specifically does business with people from the Surface.  There is also potential for her to be somehow connected to my Aeducan, via pre-DAO Orzammar interactions with Kal-Sharok.  (Or post-DAO, in a King/Queen Aeducan worldstate, which is canon divergent technically, but oh well.)
For this work, I was mainly trying to play around with lighting and see if I could get something that was a bit more extreme and with a specific color palette.  Overall, I like how it turned out, but eeeehhhh, I might try to do some more practice with lighting. xD

love yourself challenge
Tagged by @marvilus73 , i’m sorry it’s taken me so long to get to this.  i’ve been having a bit of a creative confidence crisis, but here we go.  I’m new to fallout so this is a mixed bag of art, some of it is linked over from my main blog ( @gingerbreton )
Rules:  Time to show yourself some love!  Link or post 5 of your favourite works (art, writing, edits… whatever!) from the last year below.  Then share the love and tag some of your favourite creators.
I haven’t made a huge amount in the last year, i go through fits and starts depending on what my brain wants to hyperfixate on at any one time.  I’ll start with most recent first and work back.  warning: i draw a lot of shippy stuff - it’s just what makes me more likely to pick up my tablet, what can i say??
1.  Ivy (my sole survivor) x MacCready - this is actually the happiest i’ve been with any art in a very long time.  It turned out better than i could have hoped
Tumblr media
2.  Cecily Williams - @mayihavethisdanse ’s sole survivor - she was meant to be a quick cool down sketch after doing another piece but was really happy with how she turned out and she was great practice for colouring bruises.
Tumblr media
3.  This is Yvaine, my drow gloomstalker ranger from a dnd one shot we did after Christmas. I just realised i didn’t actually share the shaded versions of this one already, so here we are!  i’ll link the original wip though.  I kind of loved the style she came out in.
Tumblr media
4.  This was for a holiday gift exchange for @allisondraste ( @minuteminx ) of her oc Liss Cousland x Nathaniel Howe (you should read her wonderful fic Temperance).  I have a big soft spot for these two, and i spent way too long on that mistletoe wreath XD
Tumblr media
5.  Last but not least, my Inquisitor, Freya Trevelyan x Blackwall.  Hey, i draw shippy fluff, what can i say.  I did this without any reference, so it’s a christmas miracle that limbs are even vaguely where they should be.
Tumblr media
This is pretty old now, so sorry if you’ve already done this and i tag you again! tagging: @mayihavethisdanse @minuteminx @ma-suranas @lavalampelfchild @ravenqueen89 @bluekaddis and anyone else who wants to do it.  Tag me because i’d love to see your favourite art / fic !!

Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favorite works you’ve created this year (fics, art, edits, etc!) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world in 2017. Tag as many writers/artists/etc as you want (fan or original!) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works. <3
1. Reprise: The “Gal and Dorian broke up in Trespasser for duty’s sake and realised it was a mistake” AU. It was a really tricky project, and very big in scope. It was trying to account for a three-year relationship and two years of separation, and how Gal and Dorian would’ve grown as people when their entire lives had changed. It was also one of the angstiest things I’ve written in years. I think the execution could use a bit of work - I still need to polish out some of the rough edges - but mostly I managed to do the idea justice, and it was such an interesting challenge.
2. keep your heart close to the ground: It was one part an interesting challenge to see if I could do right by someone else’s story (it’s a remix of @withthebreezesblown‘s Too Dark To Read, and the first remix I’d written), and one part that I’d really, really missed writing Alistair and it was a really fun opportunity to write about all the parts and complexities of his character I adore.
3. Fur: My first attempt at writing Mass Effect Andromeda, and writing Sel Ryder. It really helped me get a handle on who she was.
4. Anagepesis: Some Morgana, and some Yvaine/Cullen. I just... I really love this, because somehow it unites my old fic and writing style with my new one, and it makes me see how the same person who wrote Armour could write An Unquenchable Flame. And it feels like decent closure.
5. A Contract: Multimedia, and a whole lot of silly in less than a hundred words. This one was very different and very fun.
Runners-up (Yes, I’m cheating, but I wrote... well, a lot this year): For Now - a really hard challenge of trying to show reasonable, grown-up angst and pain without being too bleak, and showing a relationship that was still worth saving even when life got difficult; “So what does he call you?” - got a frankly terrifying amount of notes for a little sappy idea I dashed off on my birthday; A chess match - I just... really like this, it’s my favourites being snarky and happy at each other; the light of day - one of my favourite sappy things I’ve ever written; Birdsong - I’d missed Cullen and Yvaine, and it was good to get back into their voices.
Tagging: @aphreal42, @lavalampelfchild, @cherieofthedragons, @latefortevinter, @scottishvix, @nanahuatli.

More face studies, with some of my human characters, this time!  Two Wardens, and a non-Warden Cousland; let’s go!  From left to right: Gazza Cousland, Jeanette Caron, and Aja Amell.
Gazza Cousland - My canon Cousland who doesn’t become a Warden, but who does travel with the Wardens, Gazza isn’t technically related to the Couslands by blood.  She was born in Highever to unknown parents and was left with the chantry in the city.  Raised as an orphan, Gazza never really felt connected to or safe with her peers or chantry guardians; at a young age, she developed an acute case of alopecia areata, and lost all the hair on her body, something other children avoided and made fun of her for.  In addition, she had a mild speech impediment that made it difficult for her to communicate, isolating her further.  Because of this, and her alopecia areata, one of the more paranoid chantry lay brothers suspected Gazza to be possessed, and took a brand to her shoulder, as well as cutting out her tongue, to try and silence the demon and “free” Gazza.  Not long after, Bryce Cousland found Gazza and, horrified at her treatment by the Highever chantry, adopted her into the Cousland family.  Although it took some time, Aldous developed a sign language for Gazza to communicate with, and the whole of her family, as well as nobles closer to the Couslands, learned it as well.  By the time the events of DAO start, Gazza has developed a close bond with her adopted family, and has made strides in recovering from the trauma of her childhood.  She is skilled in dual-wielding handaxes and prefers to be at the vanguard of any fight.  She was not recruited into the Wardens because Duncan was unfortunately too late to reach Highever before Arl Howe’s coup.  Gazza does, however, manage to escape on her own and makes her way to Ostagar via Redcliffe in order to warn Arl Eamon, King Cailan, and her brother, Fergus.
Jeanette Caron - One of my Orlesian Wardens, Jeanette is a senior member of the group in Orlais.  She’s my longest-serving Warden, and the details of how she came to be a Warden are still something I’m working through.  (I’m aiming to finish The Calling to see if there are any possibilities there, as I like the idea of her having known some of the older Wardens.)  But in terms of the here and now, Jeanette is a gruff woman, and many of the younger Wardens see her as being quite bitter, and are wary to approach her.  She drinks quite heavily, and has lived through the emancipation of Ferelden from Orlais’s control, having secretly supported it, though she could not actively take part in or aid any resistance efforts.  She is canonically one of the strongest mages in my worldstate, and specializes in primal magic.  She’s not very skilled with melee fighting, but rarely loses her cool, and rarely lets enemies close enough to her to take advantage of her lack of melee skills.  For the events of Awakening, Jeanette is sent with several other Orlesian Wardens to Vigil’s Keep, and is outfitted by Empress Celene, and though that means she has good armor and weapons, she doesn’t particularly care for it.  Having lived through a lot of the machinations of aristocratic Orlesian society, Jeanette tends to be disdainful of the nobility, and knows that Celene is using her and her fellow Wardens to make a political statement to Ferelden.  Once she arrives at Vigil’s Keep, Jeanette essentially leads the charge against the Withered.  She basically becomes a one-woman magical battering ram, and she and her fellow Orlesian Wardens (Anselme Andras and Leofalda Kader) take very seriously the task of trying to find any of their fellow Orlesian Wardens who have survived.
Aja Amell - Aja is my canon Amell, and she joins the Wardens because the only other choice she has is going to Aeonar.  Aja is the daughter of Revka Amell, a noble from Kirkwall, and Caderyn o’Falconhold, an Avvar augur of the settlement Falconhold.  For the first seven years of her life, Aja was raised in Falconhold with her father’s people, her magic celebrated as a good omen by the settlement.  She was always somewhat shy, but was bound to a spirit of confidence once her magic manifested, in the hopes that the spirit would help her develop more self-assuredness as she grew.  When she was seven, her mother managed to convince her father to take Aja to meet Revka’s other children.  However, Aja wasn’t taught to hide her magic in Kirkwall, and very quickly gave herself away as a mage.  She was immediately captured by the templars and held in the overcrowded Gallows.  Caderyn, enraged, attempted to get his daughter back, but was killed; Revka, horrified and devastated, disappeared and was never heard from since.  Aja was transferred to Kinloch Hold in Ferelden where the Chantry sisters paid particular attention to making sure she developed the way they wished her to, as her obvious Avvar heritage and culture was something they viewed as dangerous.  By the start of DAO, Aja has been fully conditioned to believe in and follow the Chantry’s teachings, has developed a skill in Spirit and some Creation magic, and has grown into an intelligent if very shy and sheltered young woman.  When Jowan enlists her help, Aja reveals his plot to Irving, frightened for her friend, and believing that Irving can stop and help him.  She is not combat-trained, and is initially extremely unused to battlefield conditions after joining the Wardens.
Almost done with all the canon protags of DAO!  There are definitely more I can do, but for the next set, I’m going to be finishing up with my Mahariel and my Surana.

The conclusion of my collection of face studies!  At least for now.  Got all my main Wardens, plus some Orlesian Wardens, and now, the final Warden and Hawke.  This one was a fun challenge with the watercolor brush because it tends to have a weaker and less saturated hue than other opaque brush options, which can throw off the base skin tone.  It was a fun challenge, don’t get me wrong, but oof, sometimes it feels like I’m still learning basic colors... xD
Anyhow, here are the final three characters I had planned: from left to right, Velyn Mahariel, Alessandra Surana, and Jaren Hawke.  Let’s go!
Velyn Mahariel - My canon Mahariel, who excels with the bow, and who is the only member of the Warden recruits who was conscripted against his will.  Upon being saved by Duncan and promised to the Wardens, Velyn resisted to the point at which Duncan used the Right of Conscription, and as a result, Velyn has little respect or kindness for the Wardens or Duncan himself.  Velyn has always been eager to prove himself to his clan and Dalish peers, and harbors a deep rage and disdain for humans because of all the Dalish have lost to them over the centuries.  Velyn was raised to be a hunter for his clan, but unfortunately was not considered a strong candidate to become Master of the Hunt.  His tendency to rush into a fight, or look before he leapt, made the hahrens of the Sabrae clan uncertain as to how much he could be trusted to lead with a level head.  A peerless warrior nevertheless, Velyn has not given up on the possibility of returning to his clan and proving himself once the Blight is over.
Alessandra Surana - My canon Surana, an anti-Circle mage who flees the Circle during the upheaval caused by Uldred and lives as an apostate blood mage.  Alessandra was born in Antiva, and her parents relocated to Ferelden when she was quite young, and she was soon after taken into the Fereldan Circle.  She was trained apart from the majority of her peers once her skill for magic was realized, and eventually she became a Kinloch Hold combat mage.  That is, a mage trained specifically to do battle with enemies of the Circle and Chantry (the Fereldan version of the typically Orlesian Knight-Enchanters).  For a time, Alessandra served the Circle in this capacity, along with two other mages, Frala and Tully, but over time grew to disdain her position.  Very often, combat mages would be dispatched with templars to relocate and apprehend apostate mages; over the course of many such missions, Alessandra became bitter and angry toward the Circle and templars.  The Battle of Ostagar, to which Alessandra was dispatched with her fellow combat mages, was the last straw, and Alessandra used Uldred’s uprising afterward to escape the Circle with the goal of destroying her phylactery.
Jaren Hawke -  My canon Hawke.  While technically born a mage, Jaren doesn’t actually use his magic very often.  When he was young, he trained with his father, both in order to build his skills as a mage and learn to hide his magic, but once Bethany began to join in their training as well, Jaren noticed that Carver seemed to feel left out.  One day, Jaren pretended that his magic “wasn’t working” in order to find a way to include Carver in something, and began learning how to wield a sword alongside him.  He still would train with Bethany, but he used his magic less and less, preferring to see Malcolm focus his attention on helping Bethany.  By the time the Fifth Blight started, Jaren had not used his magic for over a decade and very strongly leaned toward using his sword.  Jaren was present with Carver during the Battle of Ostagar, and helped his brother to escape so they both could reunite with Leandra and Bethany.  Jaren loves fighting, but hates killing, and is drawn very much to the healing elements of magic.  He tends to use sarcasm and humor to cover a deep empathy for others, and the problems in Kirkwall get under his skin as a result.
The final face studies!!  These took forever to get out, but they’re finished, and I’m quite happy with how they turned out!  I enjoy the green background with these characters.  I might jump ahead to Inquisition characters to get some of them involved too, but for now, this is where I’ll leave this art project!

Finally got around to doing some art of my ancient Elvhen twins, Uathalen (left) and Ceda (right)!  I have a different post with screencaps of them that has their background, but long story short:
Uathalen and Ceda are twins who were separated at birth and sent to different Evanuris masters, Uathalen to Falon’Din, and Ceda to Mythal.  They both survive the fall of Arlathan and flee with other refugees to the Cad’halash Thaig, where several dwarves take them in.  When the thaig is attacked, Ceda and Uathalen are urged to go into uthenera, though unfortunately, only Ceda survives.  She eventually awakens as a result of the ritual that the Warden, Finn, and Ariane perform, though she remains hidden because she knows she is too weak to face them and doesn’t know why they’re there.  After some time, she leaves the thaig and begins to explore the new Thedas, post-Veil.
I have a more detailed backstory for them in this post: here.  (Uathalen’s vallaslin is different in that screencap because I’d made him in the CC before deciding who his Evanuris master would be; the vallaslin in this art is the correct one.)
I’m quite happy with how this turned out, especially the shading!  More practice with DA OC faces!

It’s taken me too long to post this, but here is a commissioned piece I did for @stoupax of her Baldur’s Gate 3 character, Tav (right), and @disreputabledog’s character, Oro (left) hanging out and chatting by the campfire.  Better than fighting gobbos for hours and hours, right? ;)
This was a lot of fun to work on, and I hope y’all enjoy it!  <3

And finally some dwarves!!  Here are all of my dwarf Wardens.  From left to right:  Leofalda Kader, Gundhram Aeducan, and Tristan Brosca.
Leofalda Kader - My canon Kader Warden who accompanies my Caron and Andras OCs to Amaranthine after the Fifth Blight is defeated.  She is skilled with dual-wielding multiple kinds of weapons, and has picked up some bardic skills from her time in Val Royeaux in particular, though she isn’t a bard herself.  Born in Orzammar Leofalda left for the Surface when she was still a young child, sneaking out with the help of a group of dwarven scholars who were studying the Deep Roads.  At Gherlen’s Pass, instead of going east to Ferelden, she chose instead to go west to Orlais, and very quickly managed to build up the necessary survival skills to keep herself alive, including learning the Orlesian language and perfectly mimicking a native Orlesian accent.  She chose the tattoo on her forehead both in defiance of her brand, and to take advantage of Orlesian nobles’ tendency to underestimate those things which they see as “foreign,” including dwarves.  She joined the Wardens shortly before the start of the Fifth Blight, welcomed for her skills in stealth, striking from the shadows, and resourcefulness.  She claims that the reason she never became a fully-fledged bard is because her singing voice is too horrible to make the cut, but no one has ever actually heard her sing.
Gundhram Aeducan - My canon Aeducan who ends up exiled in the Deep Roads, where Duncan and his Wardens find and recruit him.  Gundhram is a skilled commander and tactician, and is very skilled with two-handed large weapons (particularly axes).  Born in Orzammar, the second son of King Endrin and his favored consort, Herja, Gundhram has always known a life of privilege and luxury.  He hasn’t thought his brothers were so suspicious of him or each other, however, and wasn’t able to predict Trian hiring mercenaries to kill him, or Bhelen killing Trian and then framing him for it.  Devastated by this turn of events, and the loss of his family and the life he had known, Gundhram willingly joined the Wardens.  The version of him above is before he was exiled, as Orzammar tradition states that when a casted dwarf is exiled, they lose their braids and have their hair and beard shaved/cut.  Unflappable on the battlefield, and experienced with leading soldiers and warriors, Gundhram steps up after Duncan’s death as the de facto leader of the Wardens.
Tristan Brosca - My canon Brosca who joins the Wardens willingly to escape life in Dust Town.  Tristan’s weapon of choice is his bow, which is unusual for lowly Carta thugs to have, as crossbows are much easier to wield and much cheaper to buy in bulk.  But Tristan received this bow from his mother as a young pre-teen, and has kept it with him because it’s the only thing of his absent father that he has.  While skilled with a bow, Tristan can also turn virtually anything into a weapon if he has to.  Tristan is only really close to his sister, Rica, and close friend, Leske, and does not extend his trust to anyone else.  Having worked for Beraht since he was just out of childhood - and having been looked down on and left at the lower end of the Carta totem pole - Tristan has learned that words are cheap, and actions, while more expensive, are just as easy to turn around on someone.  Tristan’s main goal is to get his family and himself out of Dust Town, and for that reason, he jumps on the opportunity to join the Wardens (once he receives encouragement from both Leske and Rica, though).  The braids Tristan wears in his beard were given to him by his sister, who made up her own version of family braids for the Brosca family to share.
And there are the dwarves!  I absolutely have more dwarf OCs to get to, but for now, I’m sticking with the “in-game protagonist” theme.  Leofalda’s dwarf scholar helpers are most likely going to get some faces at some point, and I would love to sketch them out when that happens.

More face studies!  These are my two Andras siblings, Christelle to the left, and Anselme to the right.  So, starting with Christelle:
Christelle Andras - Christelle Andras is the younger sister of Anselme Andras, and both lived in the Halamshiral slums in Orlais, orphaned at a young age.  While never as visibly protective of her family as friends as her brother, Christelle takes the safety of those close to her very seriously, often keeping a small knife hidden away in her skirts in case any of the nobles or their guards push too far.  When Riordan came to recruit potential Wardens from Halamshiral, Christelle encouraged Anselme to join, and was overjoyed when Riordan selected him.  The siblings have always kept in contact, sending letters whenever they can, Christelle occasionally receiving money from her brother.  When Empress Celene led a purge of the Halamshiral slums, Christelle managed a narrow escape with several others and went underground to hide.  The group then formed an elven resistance that sought to oppose Empress Celene’s rule.  Christelle and her brother both share a gentle and unaggressive temperament that has made them a fair amount of friends in their community, but which has also made them targets to many of the more unscrupulous thieves, bandits, and noble guards/chevaliers to have moved through the area.
Anselme Andras - Anselme Andras is the elder brother of Christelle Andras, and is one of the Orlesian Wardens sent to Amaranthine after the conclusion of the Fifth Blight in Ferelden.  Although Andras looks unassuming, he has always been a staunch protector of his people in the Halamshiral slums, his sister and close friends especially.  Though it is technically illegal for elves in the slums to possess weapons when not expressly allowed by the area’s ruling noble, Anselme has managed to keep and hide a battered two-handed longsword since he was a young boy.  When he was in his late teenage years, he was taken into the Wardens by Riordan, who was present to see Anselme stand up to a group of guards harassing one of the local elven merchants.  Riordan was quick to step in and offer aid, disgusted with the behavior of the guards, and impressed with Anselme’s instinct to defend.  Anselme was not hesitant to join the Wardens, and his sister encouraged him.  Over the years since then, the two kept in close contact through letters, and whenever he had extra money, Anselme would often send that to his sister.  After the Empress Celene’s purging of the Halamashiral slums, Anselme rushed back to Orlais to ensure his sister was alright.
Another set done!  I’m probably going to end up going through all of my OCs with this exercise at some point.

Quick face study of several of my DA elf OCs!  The top picture features the makeup I’ve given them, while the bottom picture shows them all without their makeup.  From top left to bottom right:
Ira’Melanon (Mila) Mahariel Ruenna - Dalish mage born to the Mahariel family in the Sabrae clan, Mila was skilled with magic from a young age and was set to be the First or Second of the clan’s Keeper.  However, due to a lack of mages born in the Ruenna clan of the Frostback Mountains, Mila was sent to become First to their Keeper after deliberation at one of the Arlathvhen gatherings.  Years later, the Ruenna clan pushed to have Mila replace their previous Keeper, as it was believed that this Keeper didn’t truly have the clan’s best interests at heart.  Mila took her new duties seriously, despite being born to a different clan, and as a result, the clan developed a fierce protectiveness of and respect for her.  She is skilled in the Keeper magic the player can unlock as a specialization in DAA.  Her makeup doesn’t really have any story significance, I just think she looks gorgeous in that shade of lipstick.
Ilhenan (Ila) Tabris - My canon Tabris who becomes a Warden after Duncan visits her alienage in Denerim, Ila has learned the skills of a dual-wielding rogue from a young age, thanks to her adopted mother, Adaia.  Ila’s primary concern is the safety of her community and family, and her usual calm and patient demeanor tend to go out the window very quickly if either of those groups are threatened.  Ila was named for her birth mother, but knows virtually nothing about her, as it always visibly upset Cyrion whenever she asked.  Ila tends to keep her personal interests - dancing, listening to stories, her sweet tooth - to herself, and affects very stringent control when around those outside of her alienage.  The makeup she’s shown to be wearing was given to her by her father on her would-be wedding day, and was the exact same type of makeup worn by Adaia on her and Cyrion’s wedding day.  In the picture below, I added some darker colors to Ila’s eyes because that’s how I envision her after becoming a Warden; she’s exhausted and stressed, and it weathers her face.
Tylana Aravasan Sabrae - Dalish hunter born in the Sabrae clan, Tylana is extremely skilled in the use of her bow, and aggressively protects her clan from any dangers she comes across, human or otherwise.  She is very competitive and can be quite smug at times, which has led to a childhood rivalry between her and my Warden Mahariel, Velyn, who is equally as hot-headed.  Tylana’s ultimate goal is to become Master/Mistress of the Hunt, and to that end, she has trained relentlessly ever since receiving her vallaslin.  When Duncan arrives at the Brecilian Forest, the ruins with the eluvian are revealed, and Velyn is recruited into the Wardens, Tylana finds herself conflicted, untrusting toward Duncan, but wanting to place her trust in her Keeper’s decision, and torn between wanting to help Velyn and find Tamlen.  She doesn’t wear much makeup, but I loved the contrast of the pale teal/blue color for eye shadow with the subtle orange of her vallaslin.
Adaia Tabris - A skilled dual-wielding rogue, and fierce advocate for better treatment of city elves, Adaia came to the Denerim alienage when she was just about at marriage age, and her parents were hopeful that they’d have better luck finding her a match than they’d had in their previous home.  At this point, Adaia met a recently widowed Cyrion, still grieving the death of his wife, and the two became friends.  Adaia helped Cyrion through his grief, also helping him take care of his infant daughter, Ila.  In time, Cyrion eventually proposed to Adaia, and she happily accepted, already feeling like they were a family.  From then on, Adaia raised Ila as her own daughter, and Ila grew up to idolize her, eagerly learning how to wield knives and daggers so that she could be more like her mother.  Adaia was killed in the streets of Denerim while trying to defend some of the working elves from drunk city guards, leaving Cyrion emotionally broken and Ila much less outspoken than she used to be.
And there they all are!  My hope with this was to take what the DAO CC gave me and differentiate each of the OCs so that they have their own unique set of features that makes them look like an actual person.  I’m personally very happy with how it turned out, and I’m thinking I might do more of these kinds of studies in the future!

“I want your head, and nothing else.”
-----
My Tabris going into a rage in the Arl of Denerim’s estate.  I love the way the game lets you handle that part of the female Tabris origin, but I do wish at times that the game also animated the expression of pure rage and vengeance that I know was on my Tabris’s face.

Femslash February!!  The world needs more w|w, and I am here to help make that happen.  This isn’t for any specific prompt, and I hope that’s alright; I just really wanted to do something for femslash February.
This features two of my Dragon Age OCs, Marianna Armida Drago (left) and Delia Fowlis (right), and was a fun experiment with poses, and lighting, and greyscale~  (And also I wanted to draw Marianna’s lion’s mane hair!)  I’m actually very happy with how it came out!  I’m tempted to do a colored version at some point in the future, but for now, I think it’s good to let this one sit for a bit.
Normally, for these two, I would include a little codex-like excerpt, or mini-story or something, and this picture definitely has a story to go along with it, but I wanted to focus first on the art.  When I get to the excerpt, what I might do is post it with the picture on ao3 and see how it fares there.

Lava’s Art Masterpost
Hey, all!  Welcome to my art masterpost!  I have no idea if this is a thing that is done typically for art, but oh well, I like organizing things, so here we are!  What you’ll find here is mostly Dragon Age, with a few non-DA pieces in there, and there’s a range of styles I like to use, depending on my mood.  But a lot of what you’ll see will most likely combine lineart with some other form of coloring/shading.
Feel free to browse at your leisure, and I hope anyone who stumbles upon this enjoys what they find! :D And thank you to anyone who sees this and likes, or reblogs, or even just stops by to peruse a bit!
All that said, away we go!
Digital Portraits:
1. Portrait of Nameless Woman, 2020 - This one is just an experiment with a watercolor brush that I did.  It’s not anatomically perfect, but I enjoyed playing around with shading.
2. Sketch of Aja Amell, 2020 - This one is basically sketch practice with my Amell~  Not really the most expressive pictures, but it’s a start toward drawing her more expressively.  Full disclosure: Aja is one of those OCs of mine that I have had trouble with deciding on a definitive appearance for several pictures, and I really want to work on upping my level of consistency when drawing her.
3. Long-Haired Fenris, 2020 - Exactly what it sounds like; this was for practice drawing Fenris’s features (I love how distinct they are), but with long hair because I am weak for it.  This one was a fun piece to shade, and mixing the stylized lineart that I normally use with a greyscale shading spectrum was really enjoyable.
4. Portrait of Ilorin Lavellan, 2016 - This is an oldie.  Basically practicing expressions, and it is technically a WIP, but I’m still very happy with how the shading turned out, especially because this is actually (aside from the unfinished hair) one of the more minimal pieces I’ve done in terms of lineart  It’s still there, and it still shapes the flow of the picture in some ways, but it also ends up flowing with the shading instead of standing out next to it, which I like.  (Both styles are good, though, and I love seeing other artists try both too.)
5. Old Portrait of Aja Amell, 2016 - Much older picture I did of Aja; she... honestly looks very little like the newer one, I think, and that consistency is something I’m still working on, but this one was the first picture of Aja with that particular hairstyle I drew.  What I like about this picture is how young she looks; it fits with her image as a fresh and sheltered Circle mage who’s only about 20 years old at the time of DAO.
6. Old Portrait of Trilyn, 2016 - They very first piece of art I posted to tumblr~ It’s not exactly how I envision Trilyn anymore, but it was still very fun to draw, and helped me get a feel for drawing him in the future.
Dynamic Movement Pictures/”Moment’s in Time”:
1. Tabris in Arl’s Estate, 2020 - TW: blood.  I am super proud of this one.  My ultimate goal is to draw all of my Warden DAO OCs, and I could not believe I’ve never drawn my Tabris, and so here she is.  This was, in large part, practicing expressions because I absolutely love art that depicts characters in motion, or capturing some kind of expression.
2. Velyn in the Rain, 2017 - This one was actually based on some art that I saw in a Teen Wolf fic!  It was an experiment with a more expressive style (and one of the first pieces I did without lineart left in the finished version) and it was a huge step out of my comfort zone.  But overall, I am extremely happy with how it turned out.
3. Jem Nocking an Arrow, 2016 - And here is the lineart version.  This was entirely an excuse to draw my DAI baby, Jem, and to do a cool archer pose because archers are my fav, and I love characters in motion.
4. Solas Teaching Trilyn Fade Magic, 2016 - This one was a painterly picture that was also (like the Velyn picture) something which I tried to keep lineart out of.  Overall, I am proud of a lot of parts of the pic, but I think I would definitely go back over it and change a few things now if I had the patience.
5. Trilyn Closeup WIP, 2016 - TW: injury, blood, mention of abuse in the author’s note.  A lot of early pictures I have are of my OC, Trilyn, and this is one of my absolute favorites.  His entire upper body is technically in the picture, but I hadn’t finished rendering it yet, so this was what I posted.  And it was an experiment with a cross-hatching style with the pencil tool for some texture, with air brush shading and a blurring tool.  It’s a style I had fun playing around with!
6. Trilyn Blood Ritual, 2016 - TW: blood, injury (the slight cut used to supply the ritual with blood).  This one was definitely a sort of “captured moment” from a backstory I gave Trilyn, and I think what I was really going for was an atmospheric piece that could fit with any potential fic I wanted to write for Trilyn.  And then it ended up being practice for extreme lighting/shading techniques, and drawing the blood and the gross mass of demon ichor (or whatever the heck that is) turned out to be highlights of making the piece for me.
Art + Text:
1. Freedom and Control, 2020 - TW: scars, but very difficult to see.  This one was ambitious for me!  It started originally just as Solas and my Tal-Vashoth OC, Saara, facing each other, because I love the dynamic I’ve built for them in my head, but then it turned into an attempt at a tarot-esque background, and just sorta grew from there... Overall, I’m happy with how it turned out, especially with how Solas and Saara themselves turned out.  The version you can actually see a larger view is here.
2. Marianna and Delia Codex and Art, Pt. 1, 2020 - I love writing my own codex entries, first off, and I love combining art with text to create a (hopefully) seamless work.  This work was an attempt to flesh out these OCs of mine with both art (because unique facial structures are hard for me to get down, but so important regardless) and text (because writing~).  I think it turned out well overall, but there are elements of the portraits that I might at some point touch up a bit.
3. Marianna and Delia Codex and Art, Pt. 2, 2020 - Part 2, with what I refer to as a “DAI Outfit Change” because I have always loved seeing fans show their own OCs as they look in DAO, DA2, and then finally DAI.  So I absolutely wanted to jump on that bandwagon myself.  The skin tones are a little off (and I’m sorry about that!) because I was playing with the watercolor brush at that point, and it dilutes the colors I use.  Still working to figure that out, but I was very happy with the overall lineart and structures of the faces.
4. Alistair/Aja Amell Picture with a Blurb, 2017 - Ooooold, old, old, old, OLD!  I still love the art, and I’m soooo happy with how the interaction between Alistair and Aja turned out (drawing kisses is extremely difficult for me; I always end up creating a distorted weird lip-creature, instead of realistically puckered lips...).  I’m not as happy with the blurb that went with it?  At that point, I was still very much figuring out my own DAO worldstate, and the characterization for everyone, so, eh.  Take it with a grain of salt!
Unfinished Costume Designs:
1. Ancient Elvhen Armor with Dwarven Influence, 2018 - People who do costume design work are amazing and mystical beings, and I wish I could do what they do.  This was an attempt at merging the Keeper robes from DAI with a more dwarven armor aesthetic, solely because I created an ancient elvhen character, Ceda, who was taken in by the Cad’halash dwarves mentioned in the Witch Hunt dlc, and I wanted this character to have a mix of the elven style of armor and the dwarven style.  I’m overall decently happy with it, but there’s still that persistent level of self-criticism present.
2. Herald of Andraste Outfit WIP, 2016 - This was a very old picture, not one I showed around a lot, but the idea for this was entirely born of my intense interest in how fashion and outfit designs could be used to create a symbolic image for the Herald of Andraste.  In general, I love the combination of ceremonial armor with long and flowing cloth, so that was what I went for here.  I’m still actually very proud of how this came out, and headcanon something similar for my Herald in my canon DAI worldstate.
Pencil Sketches:
1. Quick Saara Sketch, 2019 - TW: saarebas mouth scars.  Exactly what it says; very quick sketch of Saara I did in a small notebook I carry around with me.  This was basically a test for myself to see if I could manage to draw Saara with the features and facial structure I envisioned for her without needing to use a lot of references.
2. Mass Effect Character Sketch; Jesse, 2018 - Similar reason for drawing this one as the above Saara sketch!  With these characters, I love sometimes the way they can turn out with the specific character creator used for them, and when I draw them, I enjoy trying to create a definitive look for them using what I get from the CC, and my own knowledge of Hooman Faces.
3. Saara Sketch, 2017 - TW: saarebas mouth scars.  A more detailed sketch of Saara than the one above, and one I definitely put more time into overall.  It’s currently the profile picture I’m using for ao3, and is the definitive go-to reference picture I use whenever imagining Saara in a fic, or for other Saara pics I make.  I am extremely proud of this picture, and feel like I should work in graphite more often.  It’s such fun, and the texture is so nice to look at.
4. Sketch of Nameless Alamarri Woman, 2017 - This was a sketch I did of what I envisioned some Alamarri tribes to look like; I used artistic depictions of Gaul tribes and hairstyles for inspiration, and have used this as a go-to reference for my version of Alamarri tribes.  Nothing super notable about this one, but I really liked the way the shape of her face turned out.
Events and Gifts:
1. Another Scar, 2020 - TW: blood, injuries, gore.  The most recent piece of art on the list, and a gift for @cartadwarfwithaheartofgold; featuring sisterly love between Rica and fem!Brosca, which was her requested prompt.  This was a tough piece for me because of the difficulty with the lighting I dealt with.  For some reason, that one particular element of it gave me so much trouble.  Overall, I’m very happy with how it turned out, though, especially the skin tones of the sisters; Brosca I always sort of like as having this greyish, more gaunt look to her, while Rica I like seeing with a darker, richer, and warmer tone to her.
2. A Very Cousland Christmas!, 2019 - This was for a holiday exchange for a server, and I drew a friend’s Cousland (Elissa, the girl on the left) with my Cousland (Gazza, the girl on the right).  I love kid-fic, and I love kid-art, and so I decided... baby Cousland art!  Drawing kid proportions was the toughest part, I recall, and I thiiiink it turned out well, and I’m still quite proud of it overall.  Elissa’s design came entirely from my friend, but I added the holly~
3. Exchange Gift with Dis Brosca and Mabari, 2018 - This was an exchange gift for @fanfoolishness, using her lovely Dis Brosca, and was my first real attempt at backgrounds... I struggled with the coherence of the foreground and background a bit, but I’m still very proud of how it turned out, especially with the colors I had to work with.  What I also really enjoyed working with was the lighting and the expression on Dis’s face.  Backlit subjects are always fun to play around with!
4. Inktober Picture, “Deep”, 2017 - TW: scars, injury, mentions of abuse in the author’s note/attached dialogue snippets.  This was for an Inktober prompt (the only one I’ve ever done, sadly... because I am bad with deadlines...), and again features Trilyn.  Trilyn’s backstory has him a former slave in Tevinter, and a lot of the early works I do for him are sort of deep-dives into his life there.  It’s all meant to be an exploration of the things he endures, and then those moments when he overcomes it all and takes back his own autonomy and self.  This art is definitely provocative, and I can understand if not everyone likes it, but to me, I just wanted to show just what he faces (without glorifying it) before showing the moment of his own triumph.
5. Christmas Holiday Picture with my Brosca and a Friend’s Amell, 2017 - This was a piece of art drawn first by a friend of mine, @nanahuatli~  She drew the Amell, the background, the mistletoe, etc.  All I did was add my Brosca to the mix to finish the image.  It was a lot of fun to do, 1) because it was fun trying to match her style so that the picture looked cohesive, 2) because I love doing collabs with friends, and 3) because it was just such a fun thing to imagine my surly short Brosca, looking at this weird plant/fungus/thing dangling over some puckering human!  It was an absolute joy to do this collab with her!
6. OC Kiss Week Pic of Jem and Saara, 2017 - TW: saarebas mouth scars.  A spur-of-the-moment thing meant to demonstrate just what kind of dynamic my OC, Jem, has with my other OC, Saara (both of whom are members of Leliana’s network in DAI).  This was a very quick picture (deadlines...) and was mostly just to have fun drawing these two characters interacting, and to see if I could make them look like themselves.  I think I did a decent job with it overall, especially with Jem’s kissy-face!  (Again... drawing kisses are the bane of my existence, although hands and feet take a close second.)
