Finally started playing ME Andromeda, I’m about thirty hours in (so no spoilers!), and…it’s kind of lovely? I get the sense from the fanbase that it’s pretty hated but I’m kind of liking it. First impressions:

It’s very much like if Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Inquisition had an adorable baby. Is that why people don’t like it? Because it’s so much less hoo-rah military?

I also heard no one likes the Frostbite graphics but they don’t bother me? The asari are a little cutesy, but everything else is gorgeous.

I do miss Shepard and the crew, tbh. Love the Liara cameos. Will always want more of Kaidan and Joker and Tali and Vega and everyone.

Do like the new crew, especially their interactions with each other. Hardcore shipping Drack/Lexi. And the Drack-Vetra friendship is really sweet.

I just met Reyes and hooooooo boy. Scott’s been flirting with Gil but he’s suddenly falling hard for Reyes—sorry Gil, don’t hate me forever.

Also Gil just go kiss Kallo already, ugh.

Also also (because Reyes’ voice actor is also male Hawke’s voice actor) my new Dragon Age II headcanon is: after Hawke meets Zevran and does his quest, he will only speak to Isabela in Zevran’s accent for the next six months. She hates it but finds it weirdly sexy. (Much how I am reacting to Reyes’ voice.)

Did the Nexus really not carry a QEC to talk to the Citadel? They traveled to a different galaxy and didn’t think, hey, we have tech that’ll let us say “yo descendants we just woke up!”?

Exaltation is a sufficiently creepy plot point, right up there with indoctrination and Reaper liquidation.

I miss quarians.

I do not miss missions. The open world style is my jam, I love the viability/colonization aspect, love the way this game does side quests.

I find the concept of the exiles to be weird. You sign up for the Initiative, are deemed worthy of being sent ahead on the Nexus instead of an ark (so you’re presumably all in), and you flake out in less than a year because…it didn’t all go to plan? That part of the narrative’s kinda weak.

Though I just got the first part of the Jien Garson whodunit and I’m super invested already.

Really intrigued by the Remnant.

Andromeda does feel less high-stakes than the original trilogy, which is too bad. Sure you’re not dealing with galaxy-wide apocalypse, but survival in Heleus should feel a lot less Laura Ingalls Wilder and a lot more Oregon Trail.

Overall, I’m liking it. Less than halfway through so still plenty of time for it to go sour, but I’m intrigued.

Okay, so my brain is beginning to explode with Lars Pinfield headcanons (as I'm pairing him with my OC, Natalie, in the Cathleen Lives AU), so I'm just laying them all out here.

I just hope that none of them get disproven if he's in the next movie (Gil Kenan said that he and Jason Reitman are playing for two more movies after Frozen Empire.)

Regardless, feel free to use these headcanons.

Lars was actually born in Swindon, but when he was two years old, his family moved to Kettering.

He has an older sister (by eight years) named Abigail (goes by Abby). I imagine her to be played by Billie Piper.

Abby works as a teacher for deaf students, mainly from grades kindergarten to second grade. She is fluent in both American and British Sign Language.

Abby also has two daughters, seven-year-old Alexa and three-year-old Luna, with her ex-boyfriend, who is NOT in the girls' lives.

After Abby's boyfriend ditched them, Lars stepped up to help his sister and nieces, and moved in. When he was recruited by Winston,

Lars and Abby's mother, Maggie Pinfield (nee Brennan) [her name comes from @pinfield's headcanon], is American, hailing from New York City.

Maggie's faceclaim is Linda Hamilton.

She's a badass who will require a post of her own.

Lars and Abby's father, William Pinfield, is also a scientist; but like Egon's Uncle Cyrus, laments his son's career in a "fringe" field.

Lars is the best uncle. Like, he barely could hold a baby when Alexa was born, and now these two girls are his entire world.

Since Maggie is an engineering genius, she was able to figure out how to pirate American television after moving to the U.K., so they got a lot of access to American soap operas.

His first crush was Genie Francis, aka Laura Spencer from General Hospital.

Lars and Callie develop a brother-sister bond; he and Phoebe also bond, and he teaches her a few of his coping techniques for when she's having a sensitive day.

Note

I am having a hard time understandind the whole "carried a child" and "having a womb" for TARDISes. How does it work exactly?

It all starts with a human girl named Laura Tobin, who through a series of timey-wimey events and everyone's favourite excuse, 'biodata manipulation', eventually became a TARDIS, known as Compassion, a Type-102 TARDIS.

She was the first humanoid TARDIS, able to change forms at will, but mostly kept her humanoid form. If it's easier, you can think of Compassion as being a kiiiind of human/TARDIS hybrid. The very first, and very unique.

Not from lack of trying, the Time Lords couldn't create or steal their way to getting humanoid TARDISes, though they desperately wanted them. Subsequent humanoid TARDISes (Type 103) only started because Compassion mothered them. Quite how these children were actually mothered is up for debate, but we do know Marie (Type 103), was given XX chromosomes by the Time Lords and mated with a male TARDIS to get a baby inside her, so they may not be all that different to the human norm.

It's a bit confusing - you might find this helpful for further reading.
