“Can you imagine yourself being being Clark Kent on the day he found out he was once a part of a culture that is now no longer here? God, I can’t even think how anyone could function after that.”
My dude, my brethren, my fellow comrade
This is just literally what being Jewish feels like
My grandparents were holocaust survivors that could barely talk about their birth country when they were alive. My great grandmother lost her entire family when nazis gunned down Jewish Latvian villages and left no survivors. My great great great grandfather lived in a desert with barely any water resources because that was safer than staying in Poland next to his christian neighbors. And then there’s also my ancestral grandmother that lost everything when her family barely escaped the spanish inquisition.
My family has more lost history than the library of Alexandria
And you know what’s the worst part is?
My family is considered one of the lucky ones.

Russia conquered, on average, territory the size of the Netherlands every year for 150 years, starting in the 16th Century. Territory the size of the Netherlands. Every year. For 150 years…Source: Visegrád 24
P.S. The attempts of "intellectuals" and "useful fools" of various shades to whitewash the crimes of Russian imperialism and to separate Russian imperialism from the colonialist expansionist policy of Western countries look quite funny.
The Russians illegally control the territories of other nations and their manpower resources obtained by criminal means. The expulsion of the Russians from all occupied territories and the secession of the subjugated peoples is the only guarantee of lasting peace in Eurasia. Unfortunately, as soon as Russia experiences a crisis, the West always saves this parasitic formation from collapse...
The Finns, Poles, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians were the first ones to get rid of the Russian invaders. Now, the Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom, independence and survival of the nation...! Sooner or later, the other nations oppressed by the Russians will want to get rid of the stranglehold of the Kremlin....
Even now, in the midst of war, many Western media are happy to spread Kremlin propaganda and disinformation under the pretext of "objectivity"...

do you happen to know any good resources for learning/not forgetting latvian? always nice to see another one of us about!
O, labdien!
I don't know how big of a help I will be, because I live in Latvia and I've never really needed any resources to get to the language, but personally I think that the best way to stay in touch with a language is by using it, talking, writing, reading books in it, watching movies, listening to songs!
Spotify has a lot of music and podcasts in Latvian, as well as youtube. There are also some of the oldies but goodies of Latvian cinema on youtube, such as Emīla nedarbi, Limuzīns Jāņu nakts krāsā, Četri balti krekli (Elpojiet dziļi) and others. Those of course are a bit old in their lexicon and the quality is also so-so, but they are classics at least! 😄
If you're in Latvia or can trick your internet connection to think you're in Latvia, Nacionālais kino centrs website filmas.lv have hundreds of Latvian movies you can watch for free!
I don't know where you can get Latvian books if you don't have a Latvian library card, but on Letonika.lv under the subsection "Lasītava" there are some books by Latvian grands available for free. They also have a cool audio section where you can listen to the audio book and follow the written text on the screen. Great for learning, I think!
For learning resources I think it's worth to visit Latviešu valodas aģentūras website valoda.lv but I don't know how accessible their resources are!
But anyway, I hope this helps somehow and you find something fun!
Lai veicas!!!!

Apgadnieks (Latvian: supporter)
Tumblr media
The most striking feature of Apgadnieks are their intense blue eyes. They have a natural tendency to be leaders, and as such, they aren't hesitant to give orders or directions when necessary. They are also courageous and more than willing to fight others that may be much bigger or older than they are. Apgadnieks are clever and quite resourceful creatures as well, able to survive with few resources.

Hello! I came across your blog and saw that you had listen Baltic/Slavic practices as a semi closed / open by blood/lineage. Recently I have been looking into my ancestry and by asking my family, looking at family trees, etc, and I have found that I have some latvian ancestry (one of my great grandparents immigrated) Along with German and some other things (Im very white lmao). I was wondering if that would make it okay for me to practice some aspects from it? I grew up disconnected from the culture and I don't want to "reclaim" something that isn't mine to reclaim. Also if you have any resources about the culture, why its semi-closed, etc. It would be greatly appreciated!! Sorry if this is kind of long, I don't really like bothering people with asks but I swear it's so difficult to find information on this kind of stuff!!
Hello there!
A great grandparent is a good chunk of blood lol More if you add the German part.
I (personally) think you are fine, you are very close to these roots to be able to reconect with them withou feel like a colonizer.
Usually the cultures closed(or semi) by blood is mostly based to the idea than many of these cultures have been historically hunted by other biggers cultures/religions, to the point that their practices were tagged as witchcraft/heresy. By blood usually means "You need to belong to us, you need to have our culture and histories in your blood".
The culture of the baltic states has been destroyed over and over generation after generation because they keep getting eaten by bigger and bigger fish (Persia, the Ottomans, the Nazis, the Soviets) so what we can get now from internet have nothing to do with their roots. Wiki says "The Balts originally practiced Baltic religion. They were gradually Christianized as a result of the Northern Crusades of the Middle Ages. Baltic peoples such as the Latvians, Lithuanians and Old Prussians had their distinct mythologies. The Lithuanians have close historic ties to Poland, and many of them are Roman Catholic. The Latvians have close historic ties to Northern Germany and Scandinavia, and many of them are irreligious."
Also sadly (or not), this closed cultures tend to keep their practices in secret to be teached between members of their communities (the mouth to mouh), so there will be a huge amount of info that you will not be able to get unless a Baltic member tell you.
For example, oomancy (egg reading) tend to be open and closed at the same time because is a practice that evolve globally, but also have their particularities between the different cultures (including the Baltic oomancy).
I have a not a lot of info sadly, sorry, but I guess, as everything, the best is start easy and general, like wikipedia, and keep searching more in depth. For what I know, neopagans in the Baltics developed the Romuva (derived from the traditional mythology of the Lithuanians, attempting to reconstruct the religious rituals of the Lithuanians before their Christianization in 1387), maybe you can check that?
I welcome anyone else if they can bring more info!
I hope I was somehow helpful, sorry for my english, I'm awake since 6am and is currently midnight hahaha * cry tears of blood *

Tbh I'm just really impressed by the fact that someone from Latvia (or at least that has Latvian as their first langage) is learning French, that makes me emotional ;-;
I have the same issue, I mainly have to relay on English to learn another langage because there are more ressources that way ; there is not much material outside of Spanish German and Italian so if you want to learn anything else you'll have to go through English (and tbh anything is "eng-subbed" on yt or streaming websites so...)
Hope you'll do well!!
Bon courage ^^
-⛰️
I talked to someone from australia whos learning latvian, and my first reaction was "why would you" and then i told my latvian friend about it and she was like "why would they" lol, im glad you feel emotional (?? Happy emotional?) the culture difference <3
French is fun! And its very fun understanding streams from the french streamers ive come to love so much! And speaking in french on tumblr is a goal of mine because the qsmp french fanbase is so cool, and you all inspire me ^^ ill do my best!
Cheers to a future of easily available language resources \o/ i might just start translating stuff into latvian to have more of it in the wild kkkk

OpenAI Unveils GPT-4: A Leap Forward in Language Models
Tumblr media
The research firm OpenAI has made several small-scale enhancements to its AI models and pricing, the most recent of which are now available. The popular GPT-3.5 Turbo model now has reduced pricing, the GPT-4 Turbo now performs better, and the text embedding models have been improved.
Most notably, OpenAI has reduced the cost of each GPT-3.5 Turbo token by 25% for output and 50% for input. This model drives chatbots such as ChatGPT and is the industry standard for conversational AI. Developers creating text-intensive products that need to analyze books or documents can now access the API more easily thanks to cheaper costs. Lower prices help retain customers as open-source models catch up to OpenAI.
Another update, version, for GPT-3.5 Turbo, brings with it unidentified “improvements.” As the most recent iteration was 0613, some might have anticipated additional information about OpenAI’s advancements.
Technically speaking, researchers and engineers can now access improved semantic representations of language thanks to updated text embedding models.
OpenAI’s most recent changes, while not revolutionary, are indicative of the company’s iterative strategy for improving its AI portfolio.
GPT 4 system message
Artificial intelligence has advanced significantly in language models, with OpenAI leading the way in this research. With GPT-4, their most recent version, language understanding, and generation have advanced significantly. We will examine in detail the capabilities, possible uses, and noteworthy enhancements or drawbacks of GPT-4 over its predecessors in this report.
GPT3.5 vs GPT- 4
1.Open AI’s GPT-4
A multimodal language model called GPT-4 can process text and image inputs and produce text outputs. After a half-year of iterative alignment using ChatGPT and OpenAI’s adversarial testing program, GPT-4 has demonstrated increased creativity, dependability, and capacity to process complex instructions compared to GPT-3.5.
2. Scaling and the Training Process
Significant progress has been made by OpenAI in the GPT-4 training procedure. They have redesigned their deep learning stack in the last two years, working with Azure to create a supercomputer that is optimized for the workload. GPT-3.5 functioned as a training test for GPT-4, allowing for bug fixes and enhancements to fundamental elements. With GPT-4, OpenAI was able to predict training performance with accuracy for the first time in a large model, improving scalability and multilingual performance.
Capabilities for Language and Image Input
GPT-4 provides text input functionality via an API and ChatGPT. Furthermore, OpenAI is working with a partner to investigate and develop image input capabilities. The processing domains that GPT-4 can handle include text documents, documents with images, diagrams, and screenshots. It’s crucial to remember that GPT-4’s picture input feature is still in the research preview phase and isn’t accessible to the general public.
Benchmarking and Performance
GPT-4 has shown remarkable results in a range of academic and professional benchmarks, exhibiting human-level performance. It achieves better results in machine learning benchmarks than both state-of-the-art and large language models, not only in English but also in other languages. GPT-4 outperformed other models in 26 languages tested, including low-resource languages like Swahili, Welsh, and Latvian.
Possible Uses
GPT-4’s improved capabilities open up a wide range of possible applications. GPT-4 has been used internally by OpenAI with notable benefits across a range of functions. Support, sales, content moderation, and programming tasks have all improved. GPT-4 has also shown to be a useful instrument for assessing AI results, which represents a critical turning point in OpenAI’s alignment approach.
Adjustability and Personalization
OpenAI has made significant progress in enhancing steerability by enabling users to modify AI tasks and styles through system messages. With this customization, users can specify how GPT-4 behaves inside predefined parameters. OpenAI acknowledges that continuous enhancements are necessary to guarantee that AI stays within these limitations.
Restrictions and Difficulties
Despite its improved capabilities, GPT-4 is not without risks and limitations. When using the model’s outputs, especially in high-stakes applications, caution must be taken as it may cause hallucinations or reasoning errors. Recognizing these shortcomings, OpenAI seeks to lessen delusions, enhance accuracy, and tackle issues like overlooking minute details.
Dealing with Inequalities and Public Participation
OpenAI actively seeks public input to help define boundaries and defaults that reflect a wide range of user values and actively works to address biases in the GPT-4 outputs. A key component of OpenAI’s goal to develop AI systems that uphold human values and advance society is public engagement.
Access to APIs and Subscription Plans
ChatGPT Plus is currently required to access GPT-4’s capabilities. OpenAI does, however, intend to launch a new subscription tier in the future to accommodate increased usage volumes. Developers can sign up for the waitlist to progressively obtain access to the GPT-4 API. Through their Researcher Access Program, OpenAI also provides researchers with subsidized access, allowing them to investigate the potential societal effects of AI.
Assessment and Input
An open-source framework for automating the assessment of AI model performance is called OpenAI Evals, created by OpenAI. By evaluating the models and reporting issues, users can help to improve their performance. This methodology facilitates ongoing assessment and optimization of models such as GPT-4.
In summary
A notable development in language models and natural language processing technologies is OpenAI’s GPT-4. It provides better performance, increased dependability, and text and image processing capabilities. GPT-4 exhibits superior performance in multiple languages and has shown human-level performance in a variety of benchmarks. Even with its drawbacks, OpenAI is improving GPT-4, addressing biases, and ensuring better performance. Many exciting advanced language model research, development, and application opportunities exist with GPT-4.
FAQ
How much better is GPT-4 than 3.5?
GPT-4 is 10 times more advanced than GPT-3.5, according to OpenAI. This improvement helps the model understand context and distinguish nuances, resulting in more accurate and coherent responses.

hi, I was looking at your latvian resources and it seems that the textbook site has been seized, do you have a mirror ? :(
thanks for letting me know about the unsecure link! I've just updated it, and I made sure the other links are still working, too. unfortunately, that specific textbook is a real pain to find online. the updated link works no problem, but it's photos of the pages rather than scans which is a bit annoying... my recommendation would be to take a look at the textbook using the updated link, try a few exercises, and if you like it, buy a used hard copy from secondhand book sites. I found a copy for as little as $8.50 USD plus shipping.
anyhow, it makes me so happy to know that someone is using that latvian resource post. best of luck with your latvian studies, and baltic language enjoyers unite! 🍀

In several countries in the former Eastern Bloc, there are laws that define the hammer and sickle as the symbol of a "totalitarian and criminal ideology" and the public display of the hammer and sickle and other Communist symbols such as the red star is considered a criminal offence. Georgia,[14] Hungary,[15] Latvia,[16] Lithuania,[17] Moldova (1 October 2012 – 4 June 2013)[18] and Ukraine[19][20][21] have banned communist symbols including this one. A similar law was considered in Estonia,[22] but it eventually failed in a parliamentary committee.[23] In Ukraine, the legislature equals communist symbols including hammer with sickle to Nazi swastika symbols.[24][25]
In 2010, the Lithuanian, Latvian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Romanian, and Czech governments called for the European Union to criminalize "the approval, denial or belittling of communist crimes" similar to how a number of EU member states have banned Holocaust denial. The European Commission turned down this request, finding after a study that the criteria for EU-wide criminal legislation were not met, leaving individual member states to determine the extent to which they wished to handle past totalitarian crimes.[26]
In February 2013, the Constitutional Court of Hungary annulled the ban on the use of symbols of fascist and communist dictatorships, including the hammer and sickle, the red star and the swastika, saying the ban was too broad and imprecise. The court also pointed to a judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in which Hungary was found guilty of violation of article 10, the right to freedom of expression.[27] In June 2013, the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled that the Moldovan Communist Party's symbols—the hammer and sickle—are legal and can be used.[28]
In Indonesia, the display of communist symbols is banned and the country's Communist party was also banned by decree of president Suharto, following the 1965–1966 killings of communists in which over 500,000 people were killed.[29][30] In January 2018, an activist protesting against Bumi Resources displayed the hammer and sickle, was accused of spreading communism, and later jailed.[31][32]
In Poland, dissemination of items which are "media of fascist, communist or other totalitarian symbolism" was criminalized in 1997. However, the Constitutional Tribunal found this sanction to be unconstitutional in 2011.[33]

The importance of media on society's mentality
The importance of media is an essential topic to discuss. The media influences a big part of the world, and their opinions are one of the most powerful nowadays.
There are a lot of vulnerable people around the world, who don't have access to quality education and get in touch with some kind of media. They are frequently subjected to have positions changed or modified by what they see in the news, advertisements, etc. Although this process is usually slow and gradual, it is very effective.
One of the classic examples is the role media played during World War II. The German government used it as an instrument to get support from the popular layers of society. For instance, the United States Holocaust Memorial posted an article about this topic, highlighting how media were used by the Nazi:
"In the summer of 1941, German newsreels featured horrific scenes of Soviet killings of Ukrainians, Latvians, and other nationalities; these atrocities were falsely attributed to Jews. Nazi propagandists crafted the film clips into antisemitic morality tales and accused the local Jews of committing crimes for which they had to be punished."
Unfortunately, this is only a simple example. Media resources were also effectively used to blame the Jewish community for Germany's economic and social instability; besides to put responsibility of the black plague epidemic - that happened in the fourteenth century, on Jews. In this sense, without the media, all the persecution they suffered would probably not have taken all the proportions that it took.
But does it mean that the media is bad for our society?
Definitely not. Let's firstly remember that media is a very broad term. It includes television, social media, newspaper, radios, general ads, etc. Considering this, it's safe to say that most of its negative effects, encompassing misinformation and hate speech, can only be easily spread if the population is not prepared to check all the information they get. This includes the absence of a critical view and interpretation on information they get.
So, as a society, we should do our part to guarantee that people get the knowledge they need to stop having their point of views changed by the media so easily. That's where the critical eyes enter in the story.
To conclude, we can say that the media has two main sides: it can be really good if used to the right purposes; it can be really bad if used in favor of the wrong ones. All of this because of its huge power on shaping the minds of the people around the world.

Security and Legal Challenges Faced by Latvia at Sea
Security and Legal Challenges Faced by Latvia at Sea Latvia, a country located on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, faces various security and legal challenges in its maritime domain. As a member state of the European Union and NATO, Latvia holds a strategic position in the region and is responsible for the security and protection of its maritime interests. This article will delve into the current security threats faced by Latvia at sea, evaluate the legal framework for maritime security, discuss increasing transnational crime and smuggling issues, address cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and outline strategies to enhance cooperation with international maritime organizations to safeguard Latvia's maritime interests.
Current Security Threats in Latvia's Maritime Domain
Latvia's maritime domain is not immune to security threats. One of the key challenges is the increased presence of Russian military vessels near Latvian waters, which raises concerns about potential territorial violations and aggressive actions. Additionally, there have been reports of illegal fishing activities by foreign vessels, posing a threat to Latvia's marine ecosystem and fishing industry. The smuggling of illicit goods, including drugs and weapons, is another growing concern, as criminal networks exploit Latvia's coastal areas for their illicit operations. To address these security threats effectively, Latvia needs a robust legal framework for maritime security.
Evaluating the Legal Framework for Maritime Security
Latvia has made significant efforts to establish a comprehensive legal framework for maritime security. The country has adopted national legislation aligned with international conventions and agreements, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, there is room for improvement in terms of implementation and enforcement. Strengthening the legal framework through the development of specific maritime security laws and regulations will enhance Latvia's ability to respond to security threats effectively.
Increasing Transnational Crime and Smuggling Issues
Transnational crime, including illegal smuggling activities, has emerged as a significant challenge in Latvia's maritime domain. Criminal networks take advantage of weak border controls and exploit the country's strategic location. The smuggling of drugs, weapons, and human trafficking not only poses a security threat but also undermines Latvia's socioeconomic stability. Proactive measures such as intelligence sharing, joint operations, and enhanced cooperation with international partners are crucial to combating transnational crime effectively.
Addressing Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities at Sea
As technology advances, maritime cybersecurity has become a critical concern. Latvia's reliance on information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure for maritime operations makes it vulnerable to cyber attacks. These attacks can disrupt navigation systems, compromise data integrity, and compromise the safety of vessels and crews. Developing robust cybersecurity protocols, conducting regular audits, and investing in advanced technologies will help Latvia mitigate these vulnerabilities and safeguard its maritime interests.
Enhancing Cooperation with International Maritime Organizations
Cooperation with international maritime organizations plays a vital role in addressing security and legal challenges. Latvia can benefit from engaging with organizations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). These organizations provide expertise, resources, and platforms for information exchange among member states. By actively participating in international initiatives and sharing best practices, Latvia can strengthen its maritime security capabilities and collaborate with other nations facing similar challenges.
Future Strategies to Safeguard Latvia's Maritime Interests
To safeguard Latvia's maritime interests effectively, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. First and foremost, Latvia should continue investing in its naval capabilities, including surveillance systems, patrol vessels, and personnel training. Strengthening maritime law enforcement agencies and enhancing their cooperation with other security agencies will also be crucial. Additionally, Latvia should focus on improving intelligence gathering and sharing mechanisms to detect and prevent security threats in a timely manner. Lastly, fostering regional partnerships and participating in joint exercises with neighboring countries will bolster Latvia's security posture and contribute to a safer maritime environment. In conclusion, Latvia faces a range of security and legal challenges in its maritime domain. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that encompasses a robust legal framework, effective maritime law enforcement, enhanced cooperation with international organizations, and investment in cybersecurity. By adopting these measures and strategies, Latvia can safeguard its maritime interests, protect its borders, and contribute to regional stability in the Baltic Sea area. Read the full article
