Sometimes, I look back at some of my older writing and I think "...cringe" I get this urge to just wipe things off my blog that I'm no longer happy with and just...start from scratch.

But today I was thinking... So what? I know I was pleased with it when I posted it, I don't post stories until I'm happy with them. So, looking back and seeing flaws now only means that I've grown! Which is a good thing. So basically, I shouldn't despise my journey, these chapters are the stepping stones that got me to where I am today. And who knows, the chapters I roll my eyes at and want to delete might be ones that people revisit and really enjoy.

I technically have all of the entries for round 1 in my queue now, and honestly I don't know if I should release all of them at once to get them over with or go with the original plan of releasing Round 1A tomorrow morning and then Round 1B when that's done with. I would do a "will of the people" poll, but obviously I don't want the deadline to be midnight tomorrow!

For you as a fic writer, everything about the reader is invisible but for those stats. If only those statistics told a story other than surveillance.

Exactly. And the statistics are a lie. Hits aren't accurate with the sheer number of bots running around scraping AO3 content, kudos don't mean the same thing to all readers, and bookmarks don't guarantee a reader liked the work either. And for a writer like myself, who has confidence in certain technical aspects of my work but doubts about its emotional impact, the numbers fuel irrational negativity.

If AO3 had an option to opt-out of stats, I would take it.

For me, posting a fic is like standing naked at the front of a featureless white room and reading my work out loud to an invisible audience. I have no idea how many people are in the room. I have no idea if they stayed to the end or got up and left halfway. I have no idea if they're smiling with pleasure or frowning with disgust.

But every once in a while, I'll hear a voice call out from the void, a voice that belongs to someone leaving a comment. Oh, how I long for that voice. Does anyone understand how it is to exist in a room like this, alone but for occasional visits from faceless voices? Only fic writers do—though it sounds akin to a mental affliction. Perhaps that's what fic writing is.
