Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!!
And now to fix the other half! Much of what I said about Persona 4 I could also say about its sequel. The amazing loop of social interaction, monster fusion and dungeon crawling, one of the best set of party members in any JRPG, memorable moments that hit me harder than what Truck-kun does to self-insert protagonists, it’s all here. Of course, even in the absence of P4G Shuffle Time, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any improvements. For one, the change to individually designed dungeons instead of them being randomly generated is appreciated. Social links affect gameplay more than just giving extra starting XP to Jack Frost and there are plenty of quality of life additions to boot. But of course, no post about Persona 5 would be complete without mentioning the thick, creamy layer of smokin sick style that covers every single millimeter of this game’s visuals. It is jaw-dropping in motion and elevates the enjoyment factor of this game by a factor of ten. However, I have to say while its widely available re-release, Persona 5 Royal, is an upgrade and I wouldn’t say it’s a universal one though the remixed dungeons, gameplay additions and the unique scenario that really threw me for a loop when I finally got to it were welcome. So, if anime style JRPGs are your jam (and maybe even if they aren’t), play Persona 5. It will steal your heart and leave you with wonderful memories. I can only hope that Persona 3 Reload and the inevitable Persona 6 continue the trend.
P.S. For the record, Makoto is best girl, Ryuji is best boy, Akechi is best pancakes, Joker is best Smash DLC, Last Surprise is best battle theme, Rivers in the Desert is best boss theme, Freedom & Security or I Believe is best dungeon theme and you’ll never see it com-iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing. Still no regrets.

the way Persona 5 Royal works is that it disincentivizes the player from hearing the best, most iconic track in its OST

I have not known peace since I noticed that "You'll never see it coming" has the same cadence as "you got to FLIP it TURN-WAYS", and so I keep hearing the latter in my head to the tune of Last Surprise

Hey guys!! I’m making persona-inspired beaded bracelets and necklaces, and wanted to ask you guys what OST title would be the most recognizable for Persona 4? For P3 I have Kimi No Kioku and Mass Destruction, and for P5 I have Last Surprise (obviously) and Rivers in the Desert. Sadly I’m stuck on Persona 4- i don’t want to do Specialist since that’s kinda vague, but other than that what are your suggestions? Pls feel free to rb/comment suggestions

Since Jesper lugging stuff around to help Kaz appear more dramatic is a thing, hear me out; Jesper carrying a megaphone around and blasting "Last Surprise" from persona5 everytime Kaz outsmarts someone.

i don't really like when people say dungeon meshi is accidentally good autistic representation, because while i understand not wanting to make conclusions without explicit confirmation from the author, there's always the weird assumption that non-western authors somehow don't know about things like neurodivergency/queerness/etc. (on top of the assumptions that east asian authors are somehow more naive or oblivious to "western" social issues).
given that dungeon meshi started being published in 2014, it's not really a "work belonging to its times"—it's as contemporary as any other media we discuss on this site, which means it should be fair to assume it engages with contemporary topics (and at the very least, you shouldn't say that the representation is accidental with so much confidence)
but anyways, the chapter "perfect communication" in ryoko kui's "terrarium in a drawer" is some of the most straightforward autistic representation I've seen, and from now on I'm going to assume that laios's character writing is absolutely intentional in that regard:

BONUS #WONDERFUL!!!!
Around the time it released and people both realized how amazing Persona 5's style and Last Surprise was, they would be given what may both the highest and lowest praise for any piece of pop culture on the internet: meme status. As an ode to this time, I am posting two of my favorite instances this practice (with regards to Persona 5). The first is a clip from the Simpsons and the other is a clip from a live baseball game. The only thing I have left to say is that both these guys got some moves.
