China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market.

Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing’s priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China’s annual parliamentary meetings.

One of those reports, from the Ministry of Finance, said the central government would allocate 10.4 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) “to rebuild industrial foundations and promote high-quality development of the manufacturing sector.”

While that’s down from the 13.3 billion yuan earmarked for the same category last year, the sector overall gained greater prominence. In 2023, plans to spend on industrial development came second to support for consumption.

“Unlike other economies that went through a wrenching adjustment in their housing market, China’s investment rate isn’t falling,” HSBC’s chief Asia economist Frederic Neumann and a team said in a report Friday. “Instead, [capital expenditure] is shifting towards infrastructure and, importantly, manufacturing.”[...]

Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers’ high reliance on debt for growth. Property sales have since plunged while developers have run out of money to finish many projects, cutting into what was once about 25% of China’s GDP when including related sectors such as construction.[...]

Despite widespread attention on whether Beijing would bail out the property sector, real estate got no mention in the finance ministry’s spending plans, and limited attention in a ministry-level press conference about the economy during the parliamentary meetings. Instead, the housing minister was included in the lineup for a press conference about people’s livelihoods.

“Supporting the modernization of the industrial system” came first in the finance ministry’s report, followed by “supporting the implementation of the strategy of invigorating China through science and education.”

Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. Amid high youth unemployment, especially for university graduates, electric car company BYD and battery maker CATL are among those working with vocational schools to train staff for their expanding workforce.[...]

The report from the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planner, reiterated government plans to support some developers’ financing needs — under the eighth item on the priority list that called for preventing financial risks. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

China will improve home sales in a "forceful" and "orderly" way, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong said on Saturday (Mar 9), as weak demand in the country's beleaguered residential property market persists.[...]

Some developers should be allowed to go bankrupt or restructured according to legal and market-based rules, Ni said told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of parliament in Beijing.

Premier Li Qiang said this week that China will quicken the development of "a new model" for the troubled sector, focussing on building more affordable housing and meeting demand for homes.

But China will insist that "housing is for living in, not for speculation" when formulating a new development model for the sector, Ni said, reiterating an official line against property speculation.

you can answer for any of your ocs, how many ever times you'd like ^^

you know how sometimes superheroes have the most mundane, most common weaknesses? like superman's got his kryptonite, aquaman's got 'lack of water', you get the idea. so if your character is somehow a superhero of sorts (or just someone with powers, prowess, etc, needn't be all "sci-fi-y") what is the silliest weakness you can come up with for them? and how does it affect their everyday life? for eg, do they have to concoct a complicated morning routine because they're allergic to alarm clocks? what if they are fatal/have a weakness to the material their tyres/tires are made of, so if their car breaks down somewhere, they'd have to rely on an overcomplicated way to get to work/school/home etc?

the world's destroyed, your character goes through a massive career/life change from what they were before to being the designated city planner (think of it as a Sims situation). besides the obvious - constructing houses, etc, what is the first project they get to first? maybe something related to their old career/life? maybe something whimsical like a detailed amusement park? a giant utility store? also in the process of constructing their fav structure, how does that look like? do they take any inspirations from their favourite structures? do they go for simplistic designs or do they wish to experiment more (given it's a Sims-esque situation where infinite resources are available at their disposal)

Q1 RAMS 

oH, EASY. Rams’ ability would be turning back time. No sweat. Only do it every four hours after a nice nap, though.(Defined as lasting 30+ minutes in length of uninterrupted sleep.) Which is frustrating. Now co has to make sure to sleep every night for at least 30 minutes. Co has to plan around co’s time restraints. Club activities? Nah, gotta make sure to take a nap. It literally just forces co to have a semi-healthy sleep schedule 😭

FIONA 

Fiona is so illusionist coded so that’s what he is. An illusionist. Downside: can’t illusion-up anything that already exists. So another Fiona? Nope, that exists. A tank? Considered to already exist. Where it gets funky is what counts as ‘already existing’ like current Fiona can’t be conjured but Fiona-if-I-never-went-to-law-school can! Tanks are out of the question but dragons are cool! (though not ones that ‘already exist’ like Ancalagon from LOTR) Fiona’ll have a fun time figuring out what’s covered and not covered and I think it’ll fascinate him and also drive him insane (no worries, he’s used to it —it’s just physics in a nutshell)   

Q2  RIN 

Gods Rin as a city planner is literally god sent. First things first would be housing (ofc) but next? Community centers. Everyone would have nice access to a local community center. Libraries are peppered everywhere and the public transport system would run like a well oiled machine and could take you everywhere no matter how far away it is. Basically, Rin’s ideal city would be really accessible without a car. 

Circling back to the community centers, Rin would pour so much into them. They’d have activities for all age groups and not just young children + elderly people. The floor plan would be pretty open, large windows, lots of natural light –that sort of thing. Though the building would only be a small part of it, there’s the outside properties and here Rin gets to have lots and lots of fun. 

Firstly, the landscape would be native plants. That means St Augustine grass will no longer exist in her city. That stuff can stay out of her life for good. Food forests? Also great. Great stuff that she’d like to incorporate on the premises. Something like a community garden would also be good but she has problems with how most are run and would have to tinker with the idea a bit. 

(honestly Rin would reshape society from the bottom up. Like she does not like the current state of things.)

What the classes' powers are (LOTARH edition)

Thief: aspect-stealing, aspect-moving powers that lead to them having all of the aspect. all of it. culminates in them being cloaked in all the aspect power they’ve accumulated, which charges up equipment they’ve stolen too. oh and they can bring their aspect to bear when stealing, and sometimes it’s as flashy as what comes after.

Prince: bring out their aspect’s most destructive, explosive potential. they get deadlier as they become more in tune with their aspect inside them. synergizes with their fighting style and use of their weapon extremely well. their powers are suited for protectors and warriors, and they often knew how to fight long before they started playing sburb.

Knight: bending their aspect’s basic powers to stunning and unprecedented uses. it permeates what they do in battle, but they’re equally adept at intrigue/daily life purposes. (like a knight of time gaming the stock exchange with future knowledge, or a knight of blood knowing what their team needs and how to keep the peace under impossible odds.)

Mages: aspect magic system that requires time and careful study to reach its peak. their magic system is complex, needs some forethought to be most effective, and takes inspiration from irl divination rituals (like astrology, tarot, or predictive algorithms). though as they get stronger, they’re not predicting the future, but putting it together in advance.

Witch: quick-fire superpowers that seem to come naturally to them. they were actually bestowed at a grievous price, and take on some flavor from the dreadfully powerful entity that bestowed them. (jade’s space powers are imbued with light from the green sun, and the handmaid’s clockwork majyyk eyes shared lord english’s rainbow aesthetic.)

Seer: sensing and exploration powers, plus a suite of spells they can cast with high versatility. they are already natural strategists and planners, so these spells are extra bomb. they also get aspect knowledge from other timelines and experience it as visions or flashes of intuition. (seers of mind can even “remem8er” long chains of memories from alternate timelines.)

Rogue: aspect-stealing, aspect-moving powers that give people buffs/debuffs/utilities. can store huge amounts of aspect in objects, or take it away. their aspect also gives them a suite of mobility and stealth powers that make it easy to get in and out of places. they are great at stealing things, and awesome at getting those things where they need to go.

Sylph: weave aspect into things, like a fairy enchanting things to upgrade them.  they imbue their personal gear, weapons, and even gifts to friends with buffs from their aspect and their personal connection to it. they also gain wound-healing powers related to their aspect, including a self-heal that stitches them back together even after by all measures they’re already dead.

Maid: they can just. make. their aspect. like they hold an infinite pitcher of it and they can pour out a hundred gallons wherever they want at a moment’s notice. this helps them with longevity too - they are also naturally resilient, and use their aspect to endure, defend, or heal very easily. when the strength goes both ways, there’s really no stopping them.

Heir: it’s called being good. seriously. they get all the "common” aspect powers very early and 1000% stronger straight out the gate. they can also transform themselves into their aspect, or become the focal point of its power. that last bit means they can tap into its entire body of strengths by redirecting it into themselves. (it makes them a narrative force of nature, like an heir of breath being unlimited by the confines of a story.)

Page: anything related to their aspect just kind of bends to their will. they’re always getting a little of what they want no matter what, no need to ask. and when they work for it, the whole world turns their way. culminates in an “aspect field” around them that makes game constructs (living entities, inanimate objects, physical forces, fate itself) work in their favor.

Bard: bring out their aspect’s chaotic potential. it goes wild when they want it to - any rule can be broken, anything at all can break. they also get a powerful transformation that lets them tap into the more destructive extent of their powers. the strongest bards are accompanied by a signature audio cue that strikes their aspect into others, like a honk.

I use this sewing kit.

I inherited this gently used sewing set from my great-gran. She wasn't very crafty, so it didn't see much use until it reached my hands. The set has held up well, though it is clear that some bits have gone.

This is interesting to me because it is an advertisement. This was free, not purchased, for attending some event. I don't know a lot about the history of it aside from "it came from Southern or Central New Jersey" and what is written on it.

It shows how the party has moved, how the values have changed over time. Now big Republican donors are citing the way party funds were (mis)used over the last few years to explain why they aren't donating. Lavish election-night parties for people who lost. Unspecified fees in the millions per state. Vague categories where there used to be line items... and they used to be so down to earth and about the little guy. I look at them now and see them only helping millionaires.

It's just so practical. A tool, a useful (if sexist) gift given to active political women.

Looking at the rest of my blog it might shock people to know I started out Republican. I hated the nanny state, and bluer areas of my home state seemed to have more troubles. Why, Atlantic City had that cheapskate Trump who failed to pay good hard working construction contractors for the work they did on his hotels and those corrupt liberals from up near NYC let him get away with bankrupting working class folks.

They left me behind as they shifted the goal posts. I don't want to ban all guns, I just want them registered like cars because too many people are getting killed by them. The same way I want commercial vehicles driven by people with CDLs I want people carrying in public to have had additional training. Do what you like in your own home, but your freedom stops at the bridge of my nose. That's not removing my rights as a law abiding citizen, that's gatekeeping supply from those who aren't so law abiding. Adding more guns to schools to fix the problem of people shooting up schools missed the entire point, and voting to defund mental health programs makes the current Republican stance on gun control hypocritical as well as too lax.

It was one part libertarian and one part practicality. Like this sewing kit, I want people to have the tools and if they don't use them that's their fault. Democrats wanted to tear down so much and rebuild it to fix systemic inequality, but lots of people would be hurt if it was done all at once and are we going to compensate them? Then as I approached voting age the Republicans started advocating, not for measured responses to problems and slow change over time, but to bring things back to how they were when this sewing kit was made. I was never an Evangelical Christian or a millionare and as the party moved to cater more and more to the former in word and the latter in deed I got left behind.

I don't want my politicians to have punishing sexuality -related sins as a top ten priority. When it was plank number 597 on the platform I ignored it, because when it came time to write laws I knew they would ignore it. That libertarian foundation I had said that what happenes between consenting adults is between them and whatever God they have, and I expect the same courtesy for everything I do in my home that doesn't affect anybody outside it.

But that's not even the main reason I flipped. I'm a history nut, born and raised by a family of Daughters of the American Revolution, Veterans, and teachers, with a pagan/Christian fliwer child turned finacial planner for a mom and a draft-doging conscientious objector nerd for a father. The family voted red down ticket and third-party up ticket through my childhood. When George Bush Jr started talking about Iraq, my father and I looked at each other and called BS. We knew, because we knew our history, that Saddam Hussein and the terrorists who attacked us would rather rip out each other's entrails than work together. We were being lied to.

And they kept lying. Sure, fine, all politicians lie, but historically they promise the moon and deliver a glow in the dark sticker. They say A is their top priority and then mostly work on B and C - and that's lies but it's an acceptable sort of lie. Expected. Less a bold faced falsehood and more a confrontation between ideas and reality. Recall what I said about the anti-gay political adjenda for my home state politicians? Yeah, priority number 597 was only brought up to drive certain people to the polls, but nobody was going to do anything about it on either side of the aisle back then.

There was no way Afghanistan radicals and Iraq were working together. Hussein had been killing them to keep them out of his country for years before 9/11. History nerds knew. Immigrant families from the Middle East knew. Most Americans just believed, because why make a lie so huge? We thought that the truth would out, Bush would look like a nincompoop out to avenge daddy, and we would course correct.

Obama was actually pretty good, too. The ACA wasn't a Medicare buy-in like the poorer parts of my family would have liked to have, and my eyes and teeth are somehow not parts of my body still according to medical insurance, but at least my uterus finally was! The filibusters were out of line - that silent version has to go - and the Republican led Congress passed the fewest number of bill in the history of the institution, to the point of not being able to keep their own lights on, to coddle the racist demographic.

While I was personally shedding the racist framing I grew up with, the Republican party was pulling on extra layers of hate. They didn't talk about their ideas anymore, just all what they didn't want. No this, no that, and when Obama shrugged and started writing executive orders just to keep the wheel turning they hated that too.

Then, Republicans went full ugly. They blocked a Supreme Court nomination, not on the merits of the nominee, but only on the basis of the president's skin color. Just sat on their hands and refused to do their job for the best part of a year. The constitution says they should have a hearing and talk about the merits, they just didn't.

You know how fast anybody would be fired for not handling a project like that in any other context? Just don't make any fries at a fast food job. Just don't file your quarterly reports at an office job. Just don't conduct any interviews for a new CFO as a CEO. This was a major obligation and they just dropped it. Like the constitution was just a suggestion. As if the second election of Obama wasn't legitimate.

And I was out. I was in a different state then, but the people I voted into state and federal office supported this nonsense. I would have liked several people other than Clinton on the ticket- I thought Trump was too old then and wanted someone younger and more willing to call a spade a spade. Clinton was too savvy, too deep into the delicate political dance to be rude about the lies. Trump also lied "bigly" and constantly. Pence was a floorboard - bland and easily stepped on.

I don't see them getting my vote back, even downticket. Biden has salvaged our international relations - I consider the president's primary job to be running the State Department and filling our embassies with competent patriots. Bush and Trump were both international laughing stocks, and in the vein of Republicans not doing anything Trump seemed to have forgotten that appointing people to a lot of necessary positions was his job. Whatever you want to say about Obama's or Biden's relation to the Ukraine, at least they didn't leave an empty chair in the embassy.

I used this sewing kit today. It's a tool, a needful thing that wants use and facilitates productivity. It gets a job done. I think it is ironic.

Republicans, for most of my voting life, have been the party of doing nothing. Filibusters instead of arguing your case. Blocking nominations and then not filling empty posts. Doing less and less of the essential parts of governing the country, while digging more and more into our privacy. It is Republicans who want to know what my genitals look like, who I sleep with, and all the bloody details of my multiple miscarriages. They want to restrict what books I am allowed to read in my local library. They want to pass nanny state laws so restrictive to "protect" the children from seeing two men holding hands that the mention of adultery gets anything with the ten commandments in it banned from all school district funded libraries. Actually, Republicans are really into nanny state laws lately. It's the only thing I hear them talking about on a national stage. Infrastructure? Nope, that's a Democratic issue now because all the big projects are woke green stuff like hydroelectric gravity batteries for wind farms and mass transit.

Democrats want to make it illegal to be a dick for racist or queerphobic reasons. I think we have laws for that already, but there is no harm in clarifying that you should believe people when they introduce themselves as a woman or man and not harm them because you think their genitals might not look 'right' according to your personal standards. We had to clarify that black people and women were also to be treated with respect and decency, so let's make it clear that you don't have the right to assault someone. Democrats want Universal Healthcare, and I'd be happy with a medicare/aid buy-in where I can pay extra taxes voluntarily to get coverage, but I wouldn't be upset if they took it to the next step. Like Bernie said, ask for a whole loaf and negotiate for half. Biden would like to get Putin out of office, and I'm all for that. Our foreign relations are awesome right now. We're trying to claw back component manufacturing for national security reasons because we can't have the military dependent on circuit boards and component parts that are all imported.

What I care about that both sides ignore?

Nationalize the rails (and make it stick this time, codify that under interstate commerce the way we did highways.) It's getting to be a national security issue that freight shipping is so gas-dependant so we need to build nuclear power and modern electrified rail systems.

Right to Repair needs national attention too. There is no reason my phone is constructed in such a way that a handy person like myself can't safely replace the battery.

Recycling in the USA is a joke that stopped being funny around Y2K. Why are we shipping our Recycling overseas? Garbage collection and processing is one of those things I expect my taxes to pay for - stop requiring Recycling plants to pull a profit. That's idiotic hyper- capitalistic nonsense; trash collection does not need to be profitable to be a public good.

Make police academy training require/include a 2 year college degree based on law, history, and conflict resolution/psychology. Many other countries have 4 year programs and we're over here clowning like this is an easy job you can learn by doing after less than 6 months of training in much of the USA. Some state police programs are already at this standard, others need to catch up.

And closer to home? One school district per county in every state. Period. Let the kids mix, let the funding comingle. A more level playing field is beneficial to society as a whole, everyone deserves access to the tools. In fact, bring a lot of small town home rule shenanigans up to the county level. More daylight there to catch corruption and embezzlement because more people show up to watch or stream county meetings than do the same for small town boards. Again, some states already have this on lock, but boy do some others need work. Finally, if you won't forgive loans then let people lose them if they go bankrupt. You tried, you failed, let's cut that dead weight loose so you can try again. It hurts the economy to have so much student loan debt on people who never got a high value 4 year degree - which is where a lot of the people struggling with the loans are. Sometimes random shit happens through no fault of your own, and you bail out into a working class job to avoid something worse. That's where a lot of the old SL debt is sitting, so just let people drop the debt if they fail that hard the way they can for everything else.

Some Celebrían headcanons:

She discovered a passion for architecture after travelling through Khazad-dûm, and maintained a lasting friendship with the Dwarven architects of Khazad-dûm until their kingdom fell in the Third Age.

Though she does not desire to rule any kingdoms, she can and will roll up her sleeves to take over when she feels things are not being done properly.  This can mean anything from taking over the kitchens when the stove dies in the middle of a feast, to completely overhauling Lindon’s emergency response system (her mother was exceedingly proud and more than a little smug for centuries afterwards).  She once said that though she might have small hands, they do more in an hour than the minds of the great in a year.

Compared to other Elves, her singing voice is considered breathy and not very strong, but she does have a talent for arranging music.  No one is quite sure how she managed to arrange a Númenorean war march into a harp concerto that retained the essence of its rousing spirit, but she did.

She likes flowers as much as the next Elf, but could not tell you any of their names or properties if she tried.  It took her about fifty years to realize that the pretty posies being left every so often on the windowsill of her guest-room in Imladris meant that she had a secret admirer, and it was only because her father caught a glimpse of one bouquet, raised an eyebrow, and was eventually persuaded to explain Iathrim flower language to her.

She’s an excellent baker, and once recreated Menegroth in gingerbread for her parents’ 1000th wedding anniversary.

Her first impression of Elrond was that he was oddly shy for an Elf-lord of such reputation, since he kept blushing and looking at his feet whenever she glanced in his direction.  Then on a tour of Imladris, he began talking about his vision for what the hidden valley could become and she instantly recognized a city planner when she saw one.  They spent the next three days engrossed in a conversation about landscape design and civic infrastructure and structural engineering, and continued to exchange letters debating their ideas for the rest of the Second Age.

Her favourite colours are lilac and orange.  Those are difficult colours to make work together, but she pulls it off. 

Her one youthful rebellion was to learn Exilic Quenya, which irritated both her father (for obvious reasons) and her mother (whose cradle-tongue was Valinorean Quenya).  Both of them blamed Celebrimbor, although his only part in it was to speak it with her occasionally as practice, until he found it expedient to go and visit Narvi for several years.

Celebrimbor was her favourite cousin, and not just by default.  He once made her a fine amber and gold filigree necklace as a birthday present, which she has kept all her life and still wears.  She considers it his finest work.

Although generally a sociable and amiable person, she can nurse a grudge forever if she sets her mind to it.  She never quite forgave Amroth for condescending to her when she asked about the construction of the tree flets in Lórien, and she spent a full thousand years being coolly polite to Erestor because she heard him make an inconsiderate jape about Dwarves once. 

Since childhood, she has been very good at climbing and loves heights.  Some of her earliest memories are of trying to clamber up her father (so tall and strong, just like a great big tree!) before he swung her up onto his shoulders and let her ride, giggling, upon them as he went about his day showing off his daughter to everyone within range.

She is very much a morning person while Elrond is a night person.  Adjusting to each other’s rhythms at first took some time and a few spats, but they made for the perfect tag-team once the twins were born.

Whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, Celebrían has it.  Even the hardiest, most stubborn weeds wither under her ministrations.  However, she is quite good at cultivating fungi, and wrote a book of mushroom recipes.  When Bilbo Baggins discovered that book in the library at Rivendell centuries later, he named her the most excellent queen among Elves, wrote an effusive ode to her wisdom, and copied down the recipes for his own collection which passed down to Frodo and then Sam.  It is said in Shire-lore that when the King and Queen came to the Brandywine Bridge, the famous Samwise Gardner prepared a proper Hobbit meal for them himself and the Queen wept when the centrepiece mushroom dish was placed before her, and that is why the dish was known ever after in the Shire as “Queen’s mushrooms.”  Other Shire scholars argued that the dish was already known as such because Old Mad Baggins had gotten it from an Elvish queen, a viewpoint which gained considerable support after Fíriel Fairbairn discovered a loose scrap of parchment covered in thin, spidery handwriting among her grandfather’s papers, which appeared to be an early draft of an ode to a wise Faerie queen by the infamous Bilbo Baggins.  Seeing as the ode was never formally published however, the provenance remains in vicious dispute among Shire scholars to this day.

While Ost-in-Edhil was her childhood home, Khazad-dûm the great inspiration of her life, and Imladris the home she and Elrond built together, her favourite place she ever lived in was Dol Amroth, by the sea.  It wasn’t Sea-longing, like her parents feared.  She just liked living on the coast.

Healing comes slowly, even in Valinor, but it does come.  She takes long walks beneath the trees with her uncle Finrod, speaking gently of the wondrous things they’ve seen and the joyous adventures they’ve had in Middle-earth.  She sits by her grandfather Finarfin’s right hand as he holds court, and finds laughter again hearing him comment in her mind about some of the more banal or petty petitions.  When the days dawn sad and grey, she goes to visit a white tower by the sea where her mother-in-law lives and understands quite a lot about despair and wounds that struggle to heal.  She sits in silence at the top of the tower, looking out onto the Sundering Seas and feeling the cold sea breeze against her face, harsh and briny and alive alive alive.  Then she goes down and helps Elwing with the chores, because she was raised properly with manners and doing the dishes, too, is living.

She starts designing their house on Tol Eressëa some decades before the Last Ship sets sail, but does not break ground until Elrond arrives.  Mostly so that they can build it together, but also partly because he is sure to have strong opinions on the plumbing and they have not had the chance to really debate with each other since the boys were born.

About us! James is the founder and principal instructor of the Goliath Historical Fencing Academy. He began fencing in 2009, after being inspired by the film Reclaiming The Blade. Jess Finley has had a sword in her hand for the past twenty years. Her initial interest was in stage combat, but not too long after beginning that pursuit began to ask “… but how did they really fight?” From that question, she branched out to German Medieval Martial Arts after being accepted as a student by Christian Tobler, who remains her mentor to this day.  

She is the head instructor at Ritterkunst Turnhalle in Lawrence, Kansas. She has taught and competed internationally as well as private intensives at her home.

 She also has a background studying Judo under the tutelage of Arden Cowherd of Topeka Judo Club.She is a published author, having written a book entitled “Medieval Wrestling” on the fifteenth century Master Ott’s wrestling treatise of German wrestling techniques.

 She also researches medieval clothing construction and fabric armor, and has presented her findings at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo and published an article in Medieval Clothing and Textiles (Boydell and Brewer) on her study of a 15th century quilted armor.

Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa

Mark Klausner changed almost everything since taking over ownership of the Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa four years ago – with one notable exception. We’ll get to that one later. Klausner hosted the grand opening of his pride and joy, the Stonedrift Spa, earlier this year; it is something to behold. The original spa in the resort’s Inn measured 3,500 feet.  The new one, located in what had been the General Store, is 12,000 and was two years in the construction phase. Its antique columns are 150 years old and came from a nearby Dubuque, Iowa, building.  They’re old, but they add to the attractive architecture of the new place. The Stonedrift Spa is Eagle Ridge’s latest and greatest new attraction. (Joy Sarver Photos) Notable features of the new spa are lighted vanity mirrors, vaulted ceilings, saunas in both locker rooms, a barber pole, beautiful co-ed relaxation rooms, manicure and pedicure stations, state-of-the-art showers with power sprays, a movement studio and facilities for unusual treatments.  All those enhancements have boosted the Spa’s attractiveness for wedding planners. Klausner declines to give a cost estimate for all the upgrades he’s given to the resort, but the Stonedrift Spa alone was a $3.5 million project and is a big boost for women guests. The 10-year marketing and sales director Colin Sanderson estimates that Spa users are 70 percent women. Beyond that, long-time visitors to Eagle Ridge might not recognize the place. The 63 golf holes are still in place, but the nines on The General course were flipped. The old General Store is now located near The General and has been enlarged. What is now Lounge 289, there used to be a pro shop. Klausner struck a deal with Illinois-based John Deere Company to revamp the golf course maintenance equipment, and a new 30,000-square-foot maintenance building has been built by the South course. Course conditioning has marketably improved throughout the resort because of those changes. Solar panels have been installed at all the resort’s profit centers, and striking back-lit signs have replaced the old ones at the resort entrance and in front of the Eagle Ridge Inn. The Inn was also converted from propane to natural gas, and the entire complex has been re-roofed. The computer and telephone systems have been upgraded, and the indoor swimming pool, while still located in the Inn, has been enhanced. There have been some new key staffers, most notably Steve Geisz as general manager and Mel Anderson as executive sous chef within the last year. There’s also that previously mentioned new/old one.  That would be John Schlaman.  He’s back as Eagle Ridge’s director of golf operations after leaving that post 25 years ago. His return contrasts with all the new things at the resort but also adds a nice touch. Schlaman’s first post-college job was as an assistant professional at Eagle Ridge in 1984, the year the South course opened. There’s even a classic picture in a golf shop of Schlaman teeing off on The General when that course was under construction. (It opened in 1997). Pete Jones was Eagle Ridge’s headman then. He left in 1987 to take the head job at Cantigny, in Wheaton, IL., which was also preparing to open a new course.  The Cantigny opening came in 1989. When Jones left, Schlaman, who had also been working for five winters at Innisbrook Resort in Florida, was named Eagle Ridge’s director of golf in 1988. He stayed until 1998, then spent two years at River Hills in Valrico, FL. Schlaman returned to Illinois in 2002 as general manager at Prairie Landing, an upscale public facility in West Chicago that was well-known for its state-of-the-art practice facilities. He was also working with a winery when Eagle Ridge beckoned again. Ownership changes had played a part in Schlaman’s earlier departure from Eagle Ridge, but his wife had been from nearby Iowa and was also involved in the winery.  That made a return to Galena an attractive possibility. “It wasn’t my intent to retire when we came back here,’’ said Schlaman.  “Both of us wanted to work.’’ He worked with his wife at a Galena winery until Mike Weiler, then the new director of golf at Eagle Ridge, invited Schaman to join his staff as the head pro at the South course.  While Schlaman was well known in the Chicago golf community after his Prairie Landing stint, Weiler had also been in charge at two other Chicago clubs – Bull Valley in Woodstock, and Wynstone, in Barrington. Schlaman was happy with his new golf role at the South course and stayed around the resort as night manager after the golf season,” he said.  “I wore a white shirt, a tie, and a name tag.   That was a good move on my part because I got to know all the people within the resort.’’ Then Weiler opted to retire, announcing his decision on April 27. “It hit me by surprise,’’ said Schlaman.  “I applied for the job when Mike left.  The (people at the resort) didn’t want to go through a hunt, and I was quick and easy.’’ At 62 years old, though, he had to take a second look at his eventual retirement plans. “I gave them a five-year plan to transition to the next guy,’’ said Schlaman, who moved his office from the South course to The General and quickly campaigned for a range ball machine for the practice area. Artificial turf also goes in at the back of the range to minimize damage on busy outing days. Already a lifetime member of the PGA of America, he just had to have his membership shifted from the Illinois to the Iowa section. While he doesn’t see a major tournament coming Eagle Ridge’s way — “the population here is a little thin,’’ he said, “but I see some regional college potential and some high school events.’’ Even before all the changes Eagle Ridge – spread over 6,800 acres — was Illinois’ premier golf resort.
