one line, any fic
Thank you so much @moonflowerlei for tagging me in this! It was cool to see what ships you wrote for! I've been in a slump for the past year, writing wise, so hopefully this fuels my writer brain! Posting this from oldest to newest.
Pick any 10 of your fics, scroll somewhere to the mid point, pick a line, and share it! Then tag 10 people.
put your head against my life (here i am) (Louis/Harry) 13,024 words
Louis leaned against the wall in one of the corners of the room as he watched his students' presentations.

Lucky (Louis/Harry) 4,618 words

Somebody tell me why I'm on my own (Stiles/Derek) 4,772 words
Like, fuck Christopher Columbus sideways with a chainsaw, but he would never be able to dissociate the holiday from his memories of the one time of the year that he was allowed to run through the forest with his cousins.
Escape (Louis/Harry) 7,491 words
Mendes actually gives him a real smile, even if it contains a smidge of condescension, “Oh Tommo the Tease, who do you think writes your files?”
sometimes a mystery (oh me, oh my) (Louis/Harry) 3,102 words
But instead, she just bares her teeth in an awkward smile and turns to the display she was sorting out before, “Thanks.
You Drive Me Batty (Louis/Harry) 21,917 words
One of the baby bats clung to Louis’ arm with its paws like a sloth.
I Wish, I Found Love (Louis/Harry, Zayn/Niall) 37,105 words
Liam loved to call him a ‘faerie prince’ when he wore the outfit, as the swirling golden embroidery along with the light pigment against his skin made him appear 'ethereal'.
Last Hope (Louis/Harry) 1,920 words
He flung his arm away from his casual touch to Harry before he awkwardly laughed and ruffled his undercut.
Lose Your Soul (Louis/Zayn) 4,888 words
“Professor Sprout said she thinks we got dropped off around the same time because of the First Wizarding War."
I'm going to tag only two people: @homosociallyyours and @amateurd18

Vaguely thinking about an Ace Attorney-esque bingqiu au where shen yuan is a tired but talented prosecutor feeling down on his life, questioning his hopes and dreams, and maybe considering a career change so he can spend his time reading webnovels all day. Followed by a young, up and coming defense attorney luo binghe who became a lawyer in the first place to meet shen yuan again and maybe, possibly, sorta get to know him after shen yuan left a lasting impression on him by helping him out somehow during his childhood. They meet again in court with shang qinghua as the defendant, who is definitely the larry butz-like character of the au. Hijinks, court drama, and not exactly mid-life crises ensue.

Mike Farrell Reflects on Captain B.J. Hunnicutt’s Ahead of ‘M*A*S*H’ TV Special
Scott Fishman, TV Insider Dec 21, 2023 Updated Dec 22, 2023 0
Mike Farrell knew he had a lot to live up to when he joined the 4077th Medical Corps and cast of M*A*S*H as Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. The well-versed actor already had an impressive career including a stint on Days of Our Lives. However, this was a completely different kind of pressure coming into season 4 of a highly successful series after the exit of Wayne Rogers, who played Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre.
He was up to the challenge with viewers connecting with the devoted family man and what would be a long-time bond with Alan Alda’s Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye” Pierce. Viewers will ever forget the shot during the historic series finale where B.J. yells out that he left a note for Hawkeye. As he flies away in the helicopter, he soon notices that his good friend spelled out the word “Goodbye” with rocks on the ground.
It’s these types of iconic moments and characters that are celebrated during FOX’s upcoming M*A*S*H: The Comedy That Changed Television. Executive-produced by John Scheinfeld and Andy Kaplan, this two-special delves into the Emmy-winning run over 11 seasons through the perspective of the cast and visionaries behind the scenes.
Joining Farrell and Alda on the doc is Gary Burghoff (Cpl. Walter “Radar” O’Reilly), and Loretta Swit (Maj. Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan) to name a few, as well as series executive producers Gene Reynolds and Burt Metcalfe. Those who have since passed, including show creator Larry Gelbart, Rogers, Larry Linville (Maj. Frank Burns), Harry Morgan (Col. Sherman T. Potter), and McLean Stevenson (Lt. Col. Henry Blake) are spotlighted through archival photos and footage.
Here Farrell opens up about his emotional reaction to the special. The 84-year-old also describes what it’s like to see the beloved sitcom still resonate more than 40 years after it ended.
Michael Farrell
How often do you go back and watch the episodes back?
Mike Farrell: The popularity of the show continues to astonish me and thrill me, frankly. I get constant emails, and mail, calls to keep it fresh in my mind, and its extraordinary impact. I don’t make a point of looking for it on television, but sometimes it’s there. And when it’s there, I can’t stop looking at it and watching those people I love so much and care about. To see and remember who they were and what we did together. It’s something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I’m so thrilled to be a part of it that it’s hard to put into words.
I remember seeing Alan Alda share a photo of you two toasting to the 50th anniversary of the show’s premiere. How is it for you to still have these close connections after all these years?
For us, it’s a family situation. We enjoyed working together and having this kind of bond that continues to this day. We talk about how much we love each other and stay in touch regularly. It has been something that brings an ongoing extraordinary rush of gratitude and appreciation for all of us here…Then you see David Ogden Stiers, Harry Morgan, Larry Linville, and others on the special. There is that sense of longing for somebody who you knew, loved, and enjoyed working with. It’s piercing at the heart when you see that sometimes. For me, I’m overwhelmed with the warmth that comes back from seeing Harry, remembering the relationship we had not only during the show but afterward. Watching Alan and his incredible wit and hijinks. Some of those things stay with me today. When I tell stories, I can’t help but get misty about those memories. It’s an everlasting love affair for me.
It’s fun to think about what would have happened if social media had been around during M*A*S*H’s original run. For example, B.J.’s mustache would be a hot topic of conversation.
People often ask me, “What do you think of the mustache?” I will say my mother hated the mustache. The mustache was a fun thing. Alan called me at the beginning of one season and said, “They think we are too much alike. What do you think about growing a mustache?” I thought it was a great idea. We made a lot out of it, which was fun to do. I wore what started as a red long shirt. Through many washes, it came out pink. I thought it was hilarious to be wearing a pink shirt in the middle of all that. I get many comments from people in the gay community who tell me they loved my pink shirt and ask if that was a signal. I tell them no, but that I’m glad they noticed it.
One of the topics that gets tackled in the special is B.J.’s character and moment of infidelity with a nurse divorcee. After all this time, I even saw a Reddit thread asking if B.J. cheated on his wife Peg.
I remember when I first met with the guys and they were talking about the possibility of Wayne leaving. I told them the one thing I didn’t want to do as an actor was come in and step in the boots of “Trapper.” They understood. They had in mind a fellow who was married, not a womanizer like “Hawkeye” or “Trapper,” who had a child at home. And he is going to be true to his wife and family. You’re talking about modeling fidelity on television, I didn’t mind that at all. We laughed. It stayed that way. One year we did a show where Blythe Danner played the guest star. She and “Hawkeye had been having a love affair in medical school, and she was temporarily assigned to our station. She was married, but the affair popped up again.
There is a scene where “Hawkeye” asks B.J. if he has ever been unfaithful. I said never. He said, “You ever tempted?” I said, “Tempted is a different question.” He said, “So, you have been tempted?” I said, “No, it was a different question.” It was a good gag. Larry Gelbart, who wrote the scene was ont eh stage when we finished that shot. I said, “Larry, that was wonderful, but let me suggest the idea. The fact B.J. is a faithful husband is great by me, but to suggest a man was not tempted goes too far. I don’t think we need to paint in that pristine manner.” He said that was a good thought. A year later Gene remembers that conversation with Larry. He asked, “What do you feel about B.J. falling off the fidelity wagon?” I said, “It depends on how you resolve it.”
How do you feel it came out?
I loved the whole process that they cared enough to hear me out, and decided it was worth dealing with that question. I thought they resolved it in a classy way. B.J. was upset about what he had done. It was brief and a misstep. He was miserable about it. “Hawkeye” gave him hell because he was going to write home and tell Peg. He said, “Don’t do that to her. If you must confess for whatever the transgression, wait until you get home where you can be with her and talk to her. I thought it was great that they were willing to explore the kind of experience people are put through in these circumstances.
It was almost like it didn’t matter how far they went, but didn’t matter. He would feel the same way.
Exactly. But the idea of them spending the night together in a bed, under those circumstances, and didn’t go far sounds a little stretch to me.
When was the moment you felt how big a show M*A*S*H was?
I was in Southeast Asia during one of our breaks. After my second or third year there on the show when I went around, I was astonished at the no matter what part of the world, the show meant something to the.m. This one man said, “Your show constantly underscores for me the meaning of peace and the need for peace in this world.” I came back to set and Alan and I were sitting together during the first day of the season back. I said, “Are you hearing what I’m hearing out there?” He said, “Yeah, we need to be aware of the way the show is affecting people.
We decided on a regular meeting as a cast and talked through the issues of the day. Alan and I both made it a point that this show is having an impact that is beyond just being a popular television show. We need to be seriously committed to making sure we do the best work we can do. Everyone got it and agreed and rededicated ourselves to commit to doing meaningful work because of the audience’s respect and appreciation for the show.
What are your overall thoughts on the FOX special while screening it?
I watched it with tears streaming down my face while laughter burst from my mouth. It was an extraordinary tribute. Not only to the show and people involved but the people involved behind the scenes. I’m glad they included the clip of Gene, Larry, and in particular Burt Metcalfe, the casting genius who brought many of the characters to the show; me included. He was a powerful force in maintaining the integrity of the show. It was deeply touching and I think the audience will love it. It shows the significance and the work of the characters and the way the show was built and what it became. I was thrilled when I saw it.
How do you think the show would do in today’s TV landscape?
I think it would remain a touchstone for people I can’t tell you how many veterans have contacted me. Even children of veterans. They would say. “My dad would never talk about his experience in the war until he saw your show. Then he would say, ‘That’s the way it was.”…That it has stayed relevant and meaningful to people for generations speaks volumes about the show.

okokok
so i was wondering if you could do the character\s of your choice with a child ghost reader
He/Him or They/Them Iodnt really care
But maybe how they met? The readers super energetic and happy and just super bubbly. They're very lonely tho cause they're stuck in a room on the third floor.
You can really do whatever with this lol
Sal had known you for a while now
You had jumped at the opertunity of new people in the building when he and his dad showed up, following the masked teenager around and trying to get his attention through silly little ghost hijinks
It bummed you out that he didn't seem to see you at first, getting upset and throwing little tantrums that resulted in pictures or books being thrown off shelves
It was upsetting for you as a young child that no one noticed you anymore. You were too scared to go up and try to talk to most of the adults but why didn't the big kids want to play with you?
Sal really only noticed your presence though once you tied his shoe laces together and made him trip one day, falling flat on his face
After that he started to notice you more than before
Years went by as he communicated pretty frequently with you, most often durring the weekends when you frequented the living world more
It was a bit easier for him when it was summer, having more time to talk and acknowledge you being there instead of being caught up with school
He learned that you had no recolection of how you died. Only thay you were nine and used to live on the very tipy top floor
Sal does his best to play with you, entertaining your childish needs with hide n seek (sometimes featuring Larry), or putting on music that you enjoyed

For those who haven't seen them already, films I REALLY recommend watching right now:
All of the Night at the Museum trilogy:
Found family, magical object, half homeless man just trying to make ends meet, magic object gets stolen every bloody time
Trust me on this one, you'll like it if you enjoy silly hijinks and visual enjoyment. Larry becomes a night guard at a museum and discovers that everything in it comes to life at night, he just has to make sure that everything doesn't go to chaos. It's got a tiny gay cowboy and roman too which is pretty neat I would say.
Bill (2015) :
Shakespeare (but not one of his plays), comedy, insanely quotable, multi rolling
Written by and starring the cast of Horrible Histories and Ghosts, this is such an underrated and hilarious film. It's about a Catholic plot against Liz 1, and a failing Shakespeare. I'm not selling it very well but trust me, it's amazing, I almost know the whole script off by heart I've seen it so many times.
Hot Fuzz:
Policemen, Gore + violence, Comedy
As a review I once read eloquently said "Like Zootropolis but less furry and more gay", about a dedicated police officer who gets moved to a quiet Gloucestershire village, only to find that there is a string of murders happening. Also he is so in love with his police officer friend it's actually insane. It is fairly gory but other than that, it's insanely quotable and absolutely hilarious again.

✨ Twenty Questions for Fic Writers ✨
Thank you @reminiscingintherain for tagging me!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
67, soon to be 68 with the Trick or Treat Fest ficlet I've written!
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
359,280
3. What fandoms do you write for?
One Direction. I've written some 1d rare pairs which adds BBC Radio 1, Music, Fashion Model, and Actor RPF to my fandoms list in ao3.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Nailed By Louis, Not Another Lonely Christmas, All That You Need, The Prince and The YouTuber, Take on Me
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Not right away but I do respond. I read them as soon as I see the email notification, but I wait to respond until I need a boost. It's so nice to reread every comment in my inbox as I respond.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Surprisingly not the one that ends with MCD! My angstiest ending is a 500 word girl direction ficlet The Phantom Heart.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I love happy endings so it's tough to pick! I'm going to go with We're Getting Better With Time because it's about second chances, so the ending feels like a new beginning for their love.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
The closest thing I've gotten to hate was a tweet about Premier Fantasies where someone was appalled by the Harry Styles/Ted Lasso pairing. It wasn't aimed at my writing, just the choice in pairing, so I took it as a compliment that I could write something that shocked people.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I do write it, but not as much as I used to. When I started writing I felt so much pressure to add smut into every fic because it gets better engagement, more hits, etc. But the more I've written, the less I care about the numbers.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've written a couple of crossovers! Premier Fantasies is Harry Styles in the Ted Lasso universe, which was crazy just because of the pairing. I had a lot of fun writing dialogue for Ted in this one. The craziest plot-wise is Love and Other Antidotes, which is a One Direction take on Emperor's New Groove, and features Kronk, Disney style hijinks, and Harry as a little cow!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of. I think short fics and rare pairs tend to be stolen less often, so so far I've been safe.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don't allow translations, but someone did post a translation of one without asking. I have mixed feelings about translations.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not. I feel like as a capricorn I would want to have too much control over the story for it to be a good idea.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
I read and write Larry fics the most, but I also love Niall/Greg James as a pairing and think their dynamic is so underrated.
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
My very first fic. It's a werewolf pack fic I started plotting in 2017. I didn't get very far before hitting some major plot holes that I was too inexperienced as a writer to be able to fill. I have grown so much as a writer since then that it wouldn't be the same fic with the same purpose as when I started writing it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
My biggest strength is that I write for myself. I love writing short oneshots even though long fics are get more kudos. I adore the humor of crack fics, even though angsty fics get more hits. I will tackle any new rare pair I want, even if I'm the only person that will read it.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am a creature of habit and my habits have been disturbed. I'd worked hard to develop a habit of writing a couple of times a week, and it was going so well. But after moving and other life changes in the last year, it's been difficult to find the time or energy to write. I wish I could flip on the motivation like a switch.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
There are a couple of books I remember because of the author's use of code switching throughout the dialogue, and I think it can be really powerful for some stories. But since English is my native language, I would only use it for my own writing if it added to the story, and if had the time to properly research and get it reviewed.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The phandom in 2016 but I didn't post it back then. One Direction was the first fandom where I shared my fic.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
I'm going to do this by category because I can't choose only one:
Larry fic: We're Getting Better With Time Girl Direction fic: Close Our Eyes (Pretend We're Miles Away) Rare Pair fic: Now All The Clouds Been Lifted Ficlet: Through the Static
~~~~~
Ok so haiii~ my name is Mary,Jane call me Jane this is my introduction post and my review series so it will work like this:
Every single fic in epithet erased (ao3)will be named here and will be connected to separate post with the review of that fic it will be reviewed in two ways
1:how good it is to me
2:how good it from a purely non biased standpoint like it doesn't matter if I'm not a fan of the concept and or characters but if it's well written it will get a good score
The scores will be 1-10
With no criteria whatsoever just how I felt about it.
There will be an explanation for each score bias and non bias
And like I said all fics will be named here whether or not I have reviewed it yet so fics will be here despite me not reading or reviewing them yet
How do you know if it's been reviewed?
It should glow green, and when you tap the name of a fic it should link you to the review
If the text is white it hasn't been reviewed and obviously new fics will be added
And final note! I will NOT be reviewing crossovers with characters I do not know for example the total drama island esq fics with characters I've never heard off obviously I won't be reviewing them and will therefore not be added here
ALSO!
I will be ranking them aswell! With these symbols for the non bias and biased ranking
#(X) bias
#(X) non bias
If you cannot guess which is which you shouldn't be on Tumblr
And I will be referring to the first ever fic as #1 until dethroned by which ever one beats it
So for example crime and breakfast might hold the number #1 spot for a while but it DOESN'T necessarily mean it's number #1 it's just means it's number one so far! And this goes for every ranking until I come to the end of the list?
Got it?
(also I didn't list all of them because I didn't want to feel overwhelmed,so I'll ad them after I finish this first batch)
Here is the list! Oldest UPLOADED to present day:
Crime and Breakfast. #1 bias #1 non bias
just so that no one will ever know. #3 bias #3 non bias
Oh,the places where you'll go. #2 bias #2non bias
He ate the tomato didn't he.
Healing gunslinger.
The tip jar.
Sometimes,it's Better to Forget Responsibility.
Drowsy Dumb Soup.
The Hunts Conclusion.
A Trip To Larry's.
Comfort.
Get well soon.
How to Take Care of Sick People 101!.
Strangle you,strangle me
Insud and Mera go to McDonald.
Drowsy Means You Sleep When You Want.
Magazine coupons.
Out of routine.
Howdy officer.
Sweet dreams are made of these.
_________________________________________
Giovanni saves the day.
The local gays go to a bar.
Sleep with the light on.
Toy time.
TLcoupons.
A Plague of nightmares.
A hospital visit.
Stargazing.
Why are you looking so beautiful to me now when you're so sad?.
Jailbirds.
Pinched.
Tough love.
Sleep is for the weak (and other things teenagers tell themselves).
Breaking gold.
Oh what a wedding it was.
Attornment doesn't mean forgiveness.
Holiday hijinks.
The confession.
But we're safe here,under the sheets.
Killing tension.
Scritchy scratchy.
Kinnie Rights.
3, 6, and 9 for the writer ask?
Aaa thank you so much!~ Sorry for the late reply, I was being on my birthday week <3
~
3. What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing?
My favorite part is when I'm just hit by a burst of inspiration and my fingers can't write fast enough for a scene that is going to go together perfectly. And my least favorite part is waiting around for this inspiration to hit. Bleh.
6. Favorite character you’ve written?
Ooo! This is hard! I guess I would say Niall's character in my I Wish, I Found Love. He's the one character that didn't exist in the original fairytale that I based that fic on (The Maiden with Silver Hands) so it was really fun creating his character out of nothing in that world.
9. Favorite/least favorite tropes?
I love to read time travel but I'm very scared of writing it because it seems like a lot to keep track of. I love giving Louis depression, lol does that count? Just because in a way I'm self-inserting my feelings and backstory into him. My least favorite trope is friends to lovers, and I love enemies to lovers.
Ace Attorney fanfiction idea: Larry gets a job dismantling large tech objects for a trash recycling plant (cause come on, that guy built a clock, he knows at least something about engineering and I am refusing the game slander of this man). One day they get an elevator unit that was replaced for some reason and he gets an idea that he immediately recruits Phoenix for. Phoenix is promptly on board and convinces Edgeworth to come along visit Larry. When there they present him the plan: a crash course in elevator construction and how to open the emergency hatch so he doesn't have to feel so helpless anymore if he ever has to get into an elevator. Hijinks ensue.
Ranking the reboot's new characters
You'll know who the top 2 are if you've seen this post, but I haven't talked about a lot of the other characters here much, so this is an opportunity for me to do that. Plus season 3 gave me more to talk about regarding some of them. This will only rank the RECRURRING characters, so no Gigi, Future Brain, Jürgen, etc.
Least Favourite - Nils
Tumblr media
I don't dislike Nils, he's fine and gets some good lines, but why wasn't he a one off? I don't see what made him so interesting compared to other "special friends" that he just had to appear more. He's cocky, mean and...an athlete I guess? That's about it. Yet I guess the writers wanted him to be the Warners' rival? The Warners already had a guy with a heavy accent as a foil-Dr Scratchansniff. If Scratchy wasn't in the reboot I guess I'd understand Nils being a recurring character...but he is, and his relationship with the Warners is more fun and interesting. Granted, he's in way more episodes than Nils (counting both the original show and the reboot since the reboot does act as a continuation) so maybe that isn't a fair comparison, but that doesn't make it any less true.
Plus he essentially does the same thing every time-he encounters the Warners, he provokes them, hijinks ensue for varying periods of time, the Warners win. Sure characters like Mr Director and Miss Flamiel came back, but their situations changed whenever they did. Next time we see Mr Director, his career's gone down the drain. Next time we see Miss Flamiel, she has a better handle of the Warners and manages to get them to behave marginally better in class. The only thing that changes with Nils is his gimmick (athlete, soda-obsessed, warrior, etc) but not his status or relationship with the Warners.
Although I'd argue the Warners don't even need a rival-or at least not a legitimate one. The closest thing they have to a "rival" is Ralph, but that's not taken seriously since the Warners easily dupe him, and as a recurring joke that works. Their whole thing is that they are (or at least appear to be) underdogs, yet despite the fact that they are children and a lot of their foes are adults who should have power over them, they win quite easily. Characters like the Warners don't need legitimate rivals because that kills the joke. They're extremely competent so there is no competition, and that doesn't make for a good rivalry. If they played it off as a joke, like if Nils took great pride in being their self-proclaimed rival but the Warners barely remember who he is every time they bump into him before figuratively (...maybe literally...) curb stomping him nonchalantly-I think that would be funny; but as is he's just another special friend who debuted in a very good segment before becoming a kinda pointless recurring character. I don't really mind that he was barely in season 3.
Egwind
Tumblr media
I won't lie, Egwind basically just serves the same purpose as Larry (poking fun at the idea of adding a third mouse to Pinky and the Brain)...but Larry's not in the reboot (minus a voiceless cameo), so he automatically has more of a purpose than Nils! 😁
Starbox
Tumblr media
Starbox is what Buttons should have been.
No, seriously.
The main reason I don't like the Buttons and Mindy segments, ironically enough, is because I LIKE Buttons. He's not a bad person, he's loyal and brave for what he goes through to keep Mindy safe. However he's not anthropomorphic like a lot of the other animals on the show, so when he constantly is on the receiving end of slapstick, then gets berated at the end of the segment, often to the point of him cowering and/or whimpering...it just looks like a dog-literally just a normal dog-being abused. Which isn't funny. If Buttons was established to be horrible (like maybe establish that he only saves Mindy in the hopes of getting rewarded, otherwise he wouldn't bother, maybe even have him be mean to Mindy to get this point across) and was anthropomorphic (not constantly walking on his hind legs, since he's a pet, but have him talk and maybe walk on two legs when Mindy's parents aren't around) so he'd seem more like a cartoon dog rather than just...a dog, it would make "Buttons and Mindy" A LOT more bearable.
Starbox is an anthropomorphic alien who wants to destroy the Earth. So yeah, he sucks...which is good! When he gets hurt, it feels deserved and can actually be funny. It means "Starbox and Cindy", as a segment, can actually work. Although between him falling for that doll and possibly warming up to Cindy at the end of their last segment of season 3, it seems he might have a softer side to him.
The Incredible Gnome in People's Mouths
Tumblr media
His shtick is berating rude people. Very loudly. Which is fine. Take away the utterly bizarre premise of his segments and you're left with something that a little derivative of the Warners' or Slappy's segments, but he's still OK.
Benedict
Tumblr media
He's dramatic!
...
Yeah that's about it really. Fun character, probably would've been higher if he was in season 3.
Cora/Flora Dora
Tumblr media
I like that Cora was portrayed sympathetically towards the end of "My Super Sour Sixteen" and that she brought out Dot's more empathetic side. I know some people probably didn't expect her to make amends with the Warners at the end, given they usually just beat their "special friends" and that's the end of that, but remember the majority of the Warners' "special friends" are not other children. Cora was acting bratty, but she's a teenager meaning she still has some growing up to do. She's not gonna have the same level of maturity as an adult. The rest of the Warners' antagonists are fully grown adults. Sure, no one's perfect, but adults should know better than to act purposefully cruel, especially towards children. So to treat Cora as harshly as the rest of the Warners' antagonists wouldn't have been fair. Unfortunately she is kind of an example of the "angry Latina" stereotype for most of her screen time in her debut segment. I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but it's still unfortunate. Thankfully she's not portrayed like that in "23 and WB". She acts more disinterested than she does angry, which is a good change of pace for her character, and given the events of "My Super Sour Sixteen" it makes sense she'd try to act less bratty. Like Benedict, I wish she was in season 3.
I liked Flora Dora's bond with the Warners and even her bond with Ralph. She really does seem to value her family, even if she's more than willing to pit them against each other in competitions. I guess that's just her way of pushing them to be the best they can be? Hence Nora's phrase "It's the Norita way." Also it's just nice to see a member of Nora's family who DOESN'T have anger issues (I can't tell if Nora's sisters do given their lack of screen time, but they seemed mean). She doesn't do too much after she restores the status quo in "Season 3 and WB", so I decided to just put her and Cora in same rank. Cora's more developed as a character but Flora Dora doesn't fall under a harmful stereotype, so it balances out...I think.
Cindy
Tumblr media
Cindy is very imaginative, and often just seems lost in her own thoughts. Hearing Cindy's constant rambling about random stuff in the background makes for a pretty funny running gag. Apparently a lot of her lines are improvised, and yeah that's not too surprising, it feels like she says any random thought the instant it pops into her head. She's also playful, cheerful, a self proclaimed "monster" (again, she's imaginative), and even though she tends to be careless, for whatever reason is really attached to Starbox.
So to recap she has a more than one personality trait, an adequate amount of screen time, has a reason to exist in the show, and doesn't fall under any harmful stereotypes (as far as I'm aware of), so...third place. Good for her.
Julia
Tumblr media
In her debut episode, Julia was depicted as somewhat placid, thoughtful, outspoken and always willing to give a helping hand. One thing she wasn't was submissive-she was more than willing to go against' Brain's plans and call him out if she felt what he was doing was wrong. Brain, being Brain, didn't appreciate this, and had already installed an obedience chip her brain so he could mind control her. However, because of her resistance to its affects, Brain turned up the settings of the device too high, causing it to malfunction and seemingly fry Julia's brain, but she did break free Brain's control.
The next time we see her in “Reichenbrain Falls”, she's become an over-enthusiastic, crazy genius out for revenge. She was hilarious in that segment, but I still kinda wish she had a more nuanced portrayal than someone who's interested in organ harvesting and beats animals now, considering she is basically a trauma survivor. But I guess those things could just be attributed to her Kentucky Fried brain. Personally I like to believe that she wants to take over the world not necessarily because she’s hungry for power, but more because of sunk-cost fallacy (she was really close to succeeding before Brain tried to mind-control her, plus her exact words were “…because I deserve to rule the world!”). It would also be the perfect way to get revenge on Brain...aside from outright killing him, which she also plans to do. Fair enough.
I really like Julia! She's really funny and I can't help but root for her, what Brain did to her was wrong. Her leitmotif is an inverted version of the Pinky and the Brain theme song, which is a neat little detail. Her voice constantly switches from calm and collected, to giddy with energetic glee, to utterly enraged; it gives a good picture of her mental state. She’s kind of like Brain and Pinky combined, she has Brain’s intelligence and Pinky’s insanity. Julia breaks the formula the Pinky and the Brain. Despite starting out as Brain's ally she wasn't co-dependent like Pinky, unlike people who Brain had tried to hypnotize before she breaks free from his mind control on her own and not due to some external force or by being lucky enough to avoid it completely, and she serves as a lasting consequence of Brain being a control freak. Whatever him and Pinky get up to is usually swept under the rug by the end of an episode as they return to the lab for tomorrow night, but not this time.
She also seems to have a consistent interest in literature, given that she mentions getting into arguments on Goodreads and getting into the Iowa Writers' Workshop; even her computer program counterpart was working on a book proposal and planned to write about how well she's doing in a holiday card. So I guess her and Brain's...I'll go with "rivalry" is basically STEM vs Humanities lol.
Julia's a wonderful addition to the cast and one of the best things to come out of the reboot. I'm not at all surprised that she's become a popular character.
Favourite - Nora
Tumblr media
Yep, my favourite's still Nora. Julia's great, but Nora has the advantage of being in more than just 3 episodes and not having an incomplete storyline.
Nora was established to be condescending, stern, and selfish. She was no-nonsense whereas the Warners always mess about, so she was like a foil to them. She also seems to care a lot about her physical appearance and health, given that she's seen exercising a lot. Now I liked her personality in season 1 but she didn't have much screen time, which was a problem because she was essentially Plotz's replacement, but he was a much more proactive antagonist who actively tried to control the Warners (demanding that Scratchansniff "de-zanitise" them, hiring a teacher for them, selling them to other studios, etc). Nora, on the other hand, didn't want anything to do with the Warners and would get them away from her as soon as possible. I'm glad she was never a carbon-copy of Plotz, but if she was gonna replace the person who was essentially the show's main antagonist, you'd think she'd act like she was the main antagonist. In season 1 she doesn't really...do anything. She's mostly just seen either exercising in her office or briefly being dismissive of her employees' needs.
Season 2 gave her more screen time and fleshed out her character, and that's great! We learn that she overcompensates for her lack of parenting skills by buying her daughter whatever she wants, and we find out her upbringing is why she's so competitive (side note you think Nora having a bad relationship with her two siblings was meant to serve as a contrast between her and the Warners? Again adding to the whole foil thing). But she also became angrier and more violent, which in hindsight I think was kind of a poor decision because, like Cora, it sorta seemed like she became the "angry Latina" stereotype at times. Yeah her freak out in "WhoDonut" did indicate she was secretly pretty crazy herself, so it's not like her having crazed outbursts came completely out of nowhere, but when this kind of thing is done with Latina characters all the time (not this show specifically, in all sorts of media) it eventually gets a little irksome.
Thankfully in season 3 they toned down her temper. It's still there, but less exaggerated most of the time. On top of that, she's actually acting like a proactive antagonist now, not just in "Season 3 and WB", but with her exploitation of Gigi, making her employees work on the day before Christmas, etc. She fulfils the role Plotz did but in a way where she's not just copying Plotz. She's a lot more competent and manipulative. Her knowing all the Warners' tricks in "Season 3 and WB" makes sense. Not only is she the CEO, she's been established to be a perfectionist, it's not surprising she'd have seen most of what Warner Bros. had to offer, and therefore could predict the outcome of their gags. They nailed it with Nora's characterization in season 3, which makes me all the more hopeful this isn't the last we see of her.
.
.
.
Overall, I think the new characters introduced were pretty solid! Nora and Julia are some of my favourite Animaniacs characters in general, and even the worst ones are at least a little fun. I genuinely hope that if we get new Animaniacs content at some point in the future that at least some of them are included.
Time Squad 22nd Anniversary: A Retrospective On The First Three Episodes
In honor of Time Squad turning 22-years old very soon, I’ve decided to give a brief review on the first three episodes. I mean, the show is technically well over 22-years old... according to creator Dave Wasson, he began development on the show around Fall of 2000. Also in an interview, he stated that he originally was going to develop Time Squad as a Oh Yeah Cartoons short, which was around 1998 or 1999. That obviously never happened, as he was already busy with the Tales From The Goose Lady shorts. Hell, I don’t even know if this is confirmed to be true... After all, Dave Wasson had always intended on pitching Time Squad to Cartoon Network. Nonetheless, even if it was on Nickelodeon in some alternate time period, it still would’ve not looked out of place alongside other nicktoons such as My Life As A Teenage Robot, The Fairly Oddparents, and Chalkzone. Speaking of time period, let’s dive into some of the very first adventures our main characters had! Well, my personal thoughts.
1a. Eli Whitney’s Flesh Eating Mistake (6.5/10)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was surprisingly a very decent introductory episode. It is lacking in the energy department; the characters’ voices aren’t nearly as energetic as later episodes... and Buck Tuddrussel sounds more monotonous and gruff. That said, it isn’t nearly as dull as the next episode... which is even more dull to the point where I don’t like it. But that’s another can of worms to cover... Anyway, the episode starts with Otto Osworth’s absolutely horrible life at the orphanage; he spends his days getting bullied by Sister Thornley and all the other kids, and hides in the broom closet to read books. After a grueling day of chores not fit for a 8-year old boy, two figures (a man and a robot) named come to his “rescue”. The reason they accidentally teleported to the early 2000s was because Larry 3000 put in the wrong coordinates. After some hesitation, Tuddrussel ultimately accepts Otto as a possible member of his team (much to Larry’s dismay). We then get a bit of filler before jumping into the main mission, which is getting Eli Whitney to invent the cotton gin. This is not bad filler because it gives an opportunity for Larry and Otto to get to know each other. We also get to see what the main satellite looks like and how Tuddrussel and Larry get assigned the missions they supposedly go on. Why they get assigned missions would later be explained in a couple of episodes. Anyway, we get some hijinks like Tuddrussel beating up a tree, Larry getting mistaken for a flesh-eating robot by citizens, and Tuddrussel tasering Eli Whitney. Instead of inventing the cotton gin, Eli Whitney invented flesh-eating robots because he felt like it. Actually, he wanted to make mankind happy, which is quite pure if you ask me. We then get some actually well choregraphed fight scenes with Tuddrussel and the robots... before ending the episode off with Eli Whitney inventing the cotton gin after the citizens discover Otto’s shirt. Well, that was it. 15 minutes of characters getting to know each other and the gist of time traveling (in Otto’s case)... and it was somewhat worth it. Unfortunately, the episode felt dull in some places, specifically during the part on the satellite. The one saving grace was Larry 3000 and his charming attitude. He’s just reeking with sarcasm in this episode. If it weren’t for him, I would’ve tuned out of this episode a while ago.
1b. Never Look A Trojan In The Gift Horse (4/10)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really don’t like this episode... I just don’t. It’s not offensively bad or annoying, but it feels like a slog getting through that one. The concept about giving the King of Troy a trojan horse full of candy is a fun concept, though it’s executed rather poorly. There are some funny jokes, like the trojan soldier pouring out actual horses, thus burning the entire kingdom down. Larry’s also great as usual. All in all, this episode is forgettable. Everything just flies by so fast, you’ll forget what happened... which is a problem in other Season 1 episodes such as “Robin And Stealing With Mr. Hood”. Even the good 7-minute episodes feel like they fly by way too fast. I feel this one should’ve been about 10 minutes, so we could get more opportunity for jokes... as well as development of the plot. I’ve heard many people love this episode. Me? I just don’t see the point. This episode is forgettable, hence why I kept this review short and sweet.
2a. Napoleon The Conquered (8.5/10)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we’re getting to the bread and butter of the episodes... this one. This episode is possibly the very first episode that felt “Time Squad”. There’s a whole barrage of adult jokes and dark humor, the characters are gradually becoming more themselves, and the pacing is just right. It is a 15-minute episode, but the pacing feels like Baby Bear’s porridge; it’s not too fast, not too slow... it’s just right. Napoleon is such a peach; he may be one of the fiercest conquerors in the world, but he’s also a sweetheart who loves his wife and kids. He’s essentially a family guy, though not nearly as much as Randall McCoy in a later episode. Josephine Boneparte, though she is a bit of an overdemanding asshole, is a very sympathetic character. Think of it this way: she’s always stuck at home chasing after her rambunctious one-year old babies, preparing dinner, doing chores, and being a typical housewife. One would go insane after a long time of this routine, so of course she would want to pursue a life of her own. All she wants is to be recognized as significant and capable as her husband. She doesn’t want to be a stereotypical housewife; she’s more than that. It’s similar to how Larry doesn’t want to be a stereotypical robot; he’s more than a robot... he’s a living being with desires and dreams. I also realized that the possible reason behind Napoleon and Josephine’s babies is because in real life,  Napoleon actually slept with many women. Perhaps that’s the joke? If it is, man’s gotta be a womanizer!
Nonetheless, despite the fact that the babies aren’t major characters in the episode, it was admittedly very heartwarming seeing the normally grumpy and cynical Larry let his guard down for the sake of caring for Napoleon’s babies. When he’s being parental, it’s just so cute <3 That and the babies thankfully do not have overly obnoxious cries, so I don’t have to worry about hitting the mute button. I’d probably love them even more if they served more of a purpose to the plot... other than giving Larry a tough job. Well... it was rather beneficial for Larry anyway; he got a taste of what parenthood was like... as well as teaching him how to be more patient and tolerant, not just toward Otto... but toward Tuddrussel too. Even if raising an 8-year old is vastly different from raising multiple 1-year olds, he learned what it was like to constantly be around a child.
Tumblr media
Those were my personal thoughts on these episodes! While the show did start off rather dull in a few departments, it still had a lot more room for improvement! Most episodes after “The Island of Dr. Freud” are either just good or very amazing... especially Season 2! I assure you, it does get better! And I have a feeling had there been a third season, it probably would’ve been its best. JT Lazer and Lance Nine Trillion being the main antagonists would add a new touch to the series, which is refreshing since there were never any true villains aside from Todd Washington Carver. You can say Alfred Nobel and Josephine Boneparte were villains, but I strongly disagree. They may have done some questionable things, but that doesn’t necessarily make them bad people. They both wanted to find their true passions in life; they were sick and tired of being misunderstood... which is a struggle most the historical figures in this show share. But because the time rope would unravel because of incorrect history, they have to do the things history knows them for, whether they like it or not. I feel a TV movie about the Time Squad corporation finding out about Otto’s existence would’ve been a great idea. As well as a reveal about JT Lazer and Lance Nine Trillion being the ones unraveling the time rope all along. It is a fairly Pixar-esque trope, but for a show like this, it would be amazing... if executed correctly.
Anyway, I really hope more people recognize and acknowledge Time Squad as it is a very underrated show! It is flawed in some departments (such as the pacing of the episodes and some unfunny jokes), but the pros far outweigh the cons! It so deserved more episodes. But alas, we cannot change time, so we’ll just have to count on fate to decide whether this show might get a revival. Better yet, it might release on streaming.
My favorite Harry Potter theory
is that Dumbledore's name is actually not just "Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore" but is actually like a freaking page long because his parents were nuts. All the Dumbledore siblings have names like this. Unfortunately they are required to shorten their names on most legal documents, but on occasion Dumbledore has managed to use his name in place of a beginning-of-the-school-year speech.
If he had been less confident about his ability to win Harry's trial in Book 5, then he would have introduced himself by his full name to throw Fudge off his guard.
The only people to successfully memorize Dumbledore's full name are Aberforth and Lupin. Professor McGonagall *would* have it memorized, but unfortunately Albus has deliberately obscured his name with a variety of puzzles and hijinks to taunt her. By the time of his death, she had figured out nearly the full name, but one of the middle names continued to elude her.
Eventually she was in her new office, cleaning out Dumbledore's stuff. She finds a note in one of the drawers, next to a lemon drop.
"Dear Minerva: You guessed right the first time. It is, in fact, "Larry". I just didn't want you to know you'd figured it out. H.A.G.S. -Albus"
McGonagall flips the desk. Then she goes to grave, digs up the casket, and flips that too.
