Pak Ou Caves When you're in Luang Prabang the next time, and fancy a boat ride on the Mekong, why not do a half-day trip to Pak Ou Cave. Some of you may enjoy the cave, while others may find it, well, boring. To each their own, I say. The tour is roughly around four hours, with the ride to the caves itself taking about two hours. Once you arrive, walk up the stairs and you will come to the first cave called Tham Ting. Just be careful as it is dimly lit. Make your way higher and you come to the second cave called Tham Theung, which is larger and darker. Both these caves are full of Buddha statues, about 4,000 of them. Wat Si Saket in Vientiane, Laos was built in 1818 on the order of King Anouvong (Sethathirath V.) Si is derived from the Sanskrit title of veneration Sri, prefixed to the name of Wat Saket in Bangkok, which was renamed by Anouvong's contemporary, King Rama I. Wat Si Saket was built in the Siamese style of Buddhist architecture, with a surrounding terrace and an ornate five-tiered roof, rather than in the Lao style. This may have kept it safe, since the armies of Siam that sacked Vientiane following Anouvong's rebellion in 1827 used the compound as their headquarters and lodging place. It may be the oldest temple still standing in Vientiane. The French colonial government restored Wat Si Saket in 1924 and again in 1930. Wat Si Saket features a cloister wall with more than 2,000 ceramic and silver Buddha images. Night market

Who wouldn't want to shop when you see a smile like that. And then shop some more.

Instead of chilling in your hotel room when in Luang Prabang, why not take a walk through the night market. It’s a nightly event, starting from around 6pm and going on till well past 11pm. The only traffic you will have to worry about are the throngs of people walking up and down the street, in search of a good deal. No vehicles are allowed at this time.

Sure, it’s the same stuff that you will see in most of the stalls, including ceramics, silk scarves, bamboo lamps, apparels, handicrafts and a variety of handmade souvenirs. And yes, the costs may be a lot more than you anticipated for a night market. But haggle politely and you should get most of what you want at a price that you are comfortable with. If you are still not satisfied, then move along. You are sure to get the same, or similar product in another stall.

If shopping is not your thing, then why not sit at any of the roadside cafés or bars, with a coffee or beer? It’s also an excellent way to watch people, which happens to be one of my favourite pastimes.

Go explore. There's something charming about visiting a small city or town, and just going with the flow. Luang Prabang is one of them. Should you, in the near or distant future, ever make a trip to Luang Prabang, make sure to devote a day, or even half, walking through the Old Quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It offers plenty of buildings and temples that are an excellent example of how to fuse traditional Lao with colonial European architecture. King Setthathirath Statue in Vientiane, Laos 🤗😇🇱🇦 Setthathirath (Lao: ເສດຖາທິຣາດ; 1534–1571) or Xaysettha (Lao: ໄຊເສດຖາ;) is considered one of the great leaders in Lao history. Throughout the 1560s until his death, he successfully defended his kingdom of Lan Xang against military campaigns of Burmese conqueror Bayinnaung, who had already subdued Xieng Mai (Chiang Mai) in 1558 and Ayutthaya in 1564.
