Taolin Forest Wen Kexing (Handcrafted)
This beautiful figure showed up on the artist's Xianyu page as an immediately available in-stock piece, and I pounced on it. You can tell by my profile pic how much I like this costume, after all!
The artist works in ultralight clay, which has been a new medium to me, and so far I've been impressed. It is very light (as the name suggests!) and appears to be extremely flexible. I was initially very worried about her figures breaking in transport, as they all have very delicate thin little details, but everything seems surprisingly sturdy. It bends, but doesn't deform, and doesn't seem to break with careful treatment. I do baby my figs, but shipping / customs is always a wild card.
Tumblr media
For something like this, I would normally absolutely air column wrap it to protect it from crushing damage. I don't worry about the fig breaking parts off - I worry about it getting squished! If this fig got crushed it would certainly destroy it, given all the thin, flat loops of clay making up most of this figure.
Tumblr media
But, I didn't have to, because the artist packed it in a rigid styrofoam cooler box. This is of course deadly on the shipping fees, especially since my warehouse flags the wooden base as air freight only. But, the only thing worse than paying volumetric air freight charges is getting a crushed figure, so what can you do?
Tumblr media
I too am deeply disappointed by my lack of quality unboxing photos. Why did I not remove this top layer of bubble wrap? NOBODY KNOWS.
Tumblr media
This is an extremely tall figure, by far my largest figure by a wide margin. The full size, including base, is 27 cm, of which 2cm is the base. This makes the figure itself about 10 inches high for us Americans.
Tumblr media
The fan is not clay but paper, which was a nice surprise. I would have been fine either way, but I like the paper. I'm also very appreciative that the artist included it in this rigid plastic box so keep it from getting squished inside the protective cooler. Box. Protective box.
Tumblr media
Here he is without the fan. He's gorgeous! You can really see the detail on his belt and his long, elegant fingers.
Tumblr media
In fact, here's a closeup of those hands and the beautiful detail on the belt. His fingers may look even a bit longer than you might expect, but that's because they need to hold the fan. You can even see the slight indent for the fingernails. This artist is just amazing. She says she puts her whole heart into crafting these figures, and you can tell.
Tumblr media
Holding the fan as so. If you don't think I wasn't a little stressed out carefully wedging the fan in between those beautiful fingers, you have somehow (incredibly) missed all the other cases of my fig related anxiety on this blog. I'm not even a high stress person! Normally.
Alright, let's spin this beauty around, shall we?

My camera decided to focus on many things, but Wen Kexing's perfect face was not always one of them. So we'll get some closeups. But first, let's do our bottoms-up and top-down pics:
Tumblr media
Please do note the beauty mark on the middle finger of his right hand!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For size comparison, here's Wen Kexing with his OG official fig counterpart:
Tumblr media
You can definitely see what I mean by how big this fig is! Maybe I should call it a statue instead of a fig.
Alright, time for our close ups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just beautiful. I'll need to commission a matching A-Xu in the Taolin forest costume so I can have them heading off to Siji Manor.
This figure was an incredible price - less than $50 USD. An absolute bargain. I can't even imagine the time that went into this. This was less expensive than other individual figures or pairs of this size, so perhaps I just got lucky with the artist clearing space.
I had really wanted semi-realistic figures like this when Word of Honor was released and I watched it for the first time, so getting this now makes me really happy. The artist also had a snowy mountain set that I picked up around the same time, which should be arriving here relatively shortly. Please look forward to it! I can't wait myself.

Musing on a line in Chapter 4 of the Laozi Along with a Comparative Study to the Chaldean Oracles.
Tumblr media
"Gentle and Overflowing, it always seems to be there” — William Scott Wilson.
"Tranquil! As though having a life of its own." — Dan G. Reid.
Commentary by Heshang Gong: 湛兮似若存。言當湛然安靜,故能長存不亡。
"This is to say that you should find tranquility and stillness at the depths of your nature. Then you will be able to endure and not die."
This whole chapter teaches on the humility of remaining ~empty.~ We make use of the Way by pouring out: emptying ourselves. The Dao is an Empty vessel, never making itself known or displaying it’s merits for creating and accomplishing all things. By doing so, the Dao is never is overfilled, and by remaining empty it creates and is responsible for everything. I think this teaching may be reflected in Xiu Dao practices, where a person statically removes themselves from all worldly concerns and attachments, to cultivate 道. From the videos and things I’ve read about Xiu Dao (Daoist Meditation), it is a process of emptying oneself. Being and remaining empty, keeps us unlimited in our capacities. But first one must asses, and abide in ones own nature 人性 —Zhuangzi 8.3.1, before such emptying can occur — or so I think.
On the topic of “empty.” We see this same sentiment reflected in the Chaldean Oracles fragment 1. Here it is as translated by Ruth Majercik:
"You must not perceive it intently, but keeping the pure eye of your soul turned away, you should extend an empty mind toward the Intelligible in order to comprehend it, since it exists outside of your mind."
(I’m drawing on commonalities, never universalities, which should be the standard for comparative religious studies.)
Here in Chaldean Oracles, we see we must too become an empty vessel and empty our mind for us to elevate our soul to the abodes of the gods — this is theurgy. The elevation of our soul to the gods, to Nous, and ultimately back to The One. It seems to preach a reversion of our mind in order for it to ascend to the Intelligible. A pretty neat commonality in the practice of Theurgy and cultivation techniques found in Daoism! Yet these two practices/spiritual techniques have different goals in mind. One does not “ascend” to the Dao, as one “ascends” to the gods, to Nous and finally The One, as we do in theurgical rituals. In Daoism, we have to embody the Dao and make ourselves receptacles by extreme emptying techniques to be able to receive the Dao’s incomprehensible nature. Emptying is not a big theme in Hermeticism and I can’t find anything related to “emptying” oneself to reach The Good that is The One (God). Only reference I find is in the Chaldean Oracles fragment I have quoted above, which is only kind of Hermetic, as it draws influences from many Mediterranean based mysticisms. Where it is similar is that it follows a platonic notion of “like becoming like.” But how we become like the Dao is different from how we become like the gods and The One. None the less, I find this commonality beautiful and I celebrate and participate in its differences.
You can also read about another commonality I make between Daoism’s “abiding and trusting one’s own nature 人性” and how the god Hebo was able to do such a thing. Hermeticism’s CH I: Poimandres dialogue on paragraph 19 we see how one who recognizes himself, attains the chosen Good, which is God (The One). Here it is. I analyze chapter 17 of the Zhuangzi in this link, and very briefly touch on how this is similar to the concept of “know thyself” in Hermeticism, but give no textual references to such claims in the Hermetica. Those textual references can be found all up and down the Corpus Hermeticum but a good place to start is the Poimandres Dialogue (CH I).
I must remind you all that I have no teacher for these kinds of things. Also, in no way am I claiming that Daoism and Hermeticism/Neoplatonism are universal in their goals or approaches and practices. So any insights and corrections are very welcome here🙏

"Master, this is the first time you're right!" and "If you were a cute girl you could also touch me." and "Could you please pay first and then you can touch whoever you want." are three absolutely savage roasts of poor, gentle, modest and sophisticated Lao Wen, he truly did not deserve this.

New Year Joint Special Project - Bedema Lake
At long last, I'm posting about the final set in this amazing series! It's been a long time coming.
This is one set in a collaborative series of six among five fig makers that were designed for the Lunar New Year 2022. This project launched on February 22, 2022, and included 4 Wenzhou sets and 2 Junzhe sets:
Tumblr media
If you ordered during the early bird period, you would get a piece of a magnet which formed part of a larger piece of art. If you got all 6 magnets, you could complete the whole art piece.
My first post in this series was back on October 6, 2022, with the Armory set. I received this final set in the warehouse right around December 2022, but I had some delays of my own sending it out from the warehouse, and then I've been holding off on posting it until I had enough time, since this is gonna be a long post.
This was the fig set I was most excited about all of them (and I was very excited about them!), because the Episode 6 lake raft scene is 1) epic, and 2) so active it seemed incredible we could get a fig of them in motion.
This was not an easy set for the fig maker to make, either. She was displeased (to say the least, her text messages berating the factory boss for changing the specs without asking her were hilarious) with the factory's initial run of the lake water, as they modified it significantly from the sample. She had it re-run, and then had the factory include the version she rejected since it had already been made. After seeing the two versions, I really appreciated her care and thoughtfulness as to detail, because she was right - her original IS way better.
Tumblr media
You can see all the pieces here. There's a lot of them! The fig maker helpfully posted a step by step guide to putting it together. The lighter plastic lake base on top is the one the factory initially made - it's just a light clear water colored plastic. The one on the left side is a much, much heavier, thicker piece of solid resin (? I think it's resin?) that not only looks way better but is much more stable. The figs are there in their sealed foil bags, and the lake raft together with it's bottom logs are in pieces around them. I usually have the warehouse toss the glue (it's restricted) for mailing, but this appears to have accidentally slipped on through.
Tumblr media
Here's the logs attached to the bottom. I tried museum putty first...and then museum wax...but neither was strong enough for the weight of the figs. I had to end up cleaning all of it out and just using my glue. Funny I didn't even think to use the glue that was sent - I just pulled out my trusty industrial strength glue. You can see where the thin rectangular slot at the bottom fits into the lake base. I just flipped it over and glued it in.
Tumblr media
A better comparison of the lake bases. You can see even more clearly here how much better the top one is in every respect. I'd make a horrible pun that the bottom one should be called Badema Lake, but we're all better than that.
Tumblr media
We're gonna forget that pale imitation lake ever existed. Here we are with the real deal! You can see the peg up there on top for Lao Wen, and it's a bit hard to see, but there's an indent down at the base for our temporarily-still-Hobo-Xu.
By the way, I never knew this lake even had a name before this fig set, much less that it was called Bedema Lake. I feel like we're all better prepared for SHL quiz trivia now.
Tumblr media
Here's Lao Wen with his balancing foot ready, and A-Xu with a very sturdy wide stance. No one told him when he was practicing martial arts that one day he'd be doing horse stance on a raft, fighting off weapons-grade flirtation.
Tumblr media
Lao Wen would be delighted over this picture, since it looks like A-Xu is chasing him! I love the expressions on their faces - A-Xu looks wary, and Lao Wen looks absolutely, delightfully incorrigible.
Tumblr media
Here we go with A-Xu getting fitted out for his pose...
Tumblr media
...and Lao Wen landing as light as feather on the raft end!
Tumblr media
Here's the best angle to see how both of them attach to the base.
Alright, we're going to go for a spin around the lake raft. This was a bit of a hard set to photograph, with the phone focusing on some areas and leaving others blurry, but please don't mind the amateur work. Here we go!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looks like I'm going to use up all 30 of the allowable pictures per post for this one! Let me get one last angle...
Tumblr media
And last but not least, the box cards and box:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Absolutely delightful, isn't it? I like the dog on the raft, and the cat just peeping out of the bushes. Too cute.
Material: PVC (figures) and resin (lake)
Fig Count: 283
Scene Count: 22
Rating: The pinnacle!

No but not enough English speakers understand that the peak term of endearment in Chinese is to call your partner by their full name. “A-[name]” and “[name]-er” are grammatically correct terms of endearment and so is “lao gong/lao po” but you know what makes me SURE a couple is TIGHT? If they call each other by their whole ass government names.
