So, I've come to the decision that, for motivation purposes, I will record my journey to taking the N2 exam in December. I'm not even slightly motivated to study, and that's exactly why I decided to sign up for the exams, because I think that getting myself in a situation where I actually have to start studying will motivate me enough to keep going.

Are you learning a language and seeking more exciting ways to improve?

Studying grammar, expanding your vocabulary, and using learning apps all have their benefits, but there comes a point when one gets bored of learning a language in such an isolated context. Language learning should involve merging your personal interests with your language goals, all while interacting with natives and other students of the language.

I'm designing a Summer Language Challenge for those interested in meeting new people and improving their mastery and navigation of their target tongue while simultaneously engaging in topics and hobies that they enjoy. My basic idea is this:

Participants would post some form of content in which they describe (in their target language) some aspect of a topic, hobby, activity, etc. that interests them. Natives would then correct their mistakes, and we'd do the same for their posts.

Examples include:

giving a critical review of some form of media you recently saw/read (multilingual book club??)

giving a cooking tutorial on your favorite recipe

researching a topic that interests you and writing a short research paper about it (or just a paragraph)

watching conspiracy theory videos on Youtube and trying to summarize your favorite theory in your target language

Advice on Language Exchange as a Beginner?

Hi! I need some advice. This is an inquiry for everyone on langblr regardless of target language.

To set the stage, I am a beginner in Japanese. I’m currently completing Lesson 7 of the Genki curriculum. I’m pretty sure that’s like halfway to being able to pass JLPT N5. If those reference points don’t mean anything to you, I think I’m at an equivalent to A2 level if we’re going by Common European Framework standards.

I was notified of the opportunity to attend a weekly in-person group Japanese language exchange. This group is made for native Japanese speakers and people learning Japanese to converse in Japanese. As someone who has few opportunities to converse in Japanese, let alone with anyone at a higher level than me, this seems like an obvious thing to try.

I’m quite nervous. I already can hear the comments of “just go! what’s the worst that could happen?” but as a socially anxious person, I want to feel prepared before I go. I’ll list out some of my concerns, and hopefully someone with experience in this realm can give me advice or consolation?

1. What if most of the people there are fluent/native Japanese speakers and I’m the odd one out who is trying to keep up? To my knowledge, the person who formed this group is a native speaker, so I’m worried of this possibility. How can I make the most of this potential situation without feeling like I’m dragging the group down?

2. What specific phrases should I prepare myself with that may be relevant in this exchange situation? What do I do if someone says something to me that I have trouble understanding?

3. How can I make the most out of a situation like this without it being awkward? Perhaps there’s no getting around the awkwardness and I just need to accept it… let me know.

Bottom line, I know that I need to at least try going to this club. One of the main points of learning a language is being able to communicate with others, so it feels silly to skip out on this just because I’m not confident yet. If I want to get better at speaking, I need to speak, duh! I should be accepting as many opportunities to be exposed to Japanese as possible.

I would like to arm myself with the knowledge I need to make the most of this experience. Please, please, feel free to enlighten me with any wisdom you have. Thank you in advance!

How is the Dutch learning going? Anything you need help with?

I'm glad to be confronted with this question because... eh

Last semester was really full for me and I barely did any language learning (at least that's what it felt like) so for 2024 one of my goals is simply to "get back into language learning"

I'm doing amazingly with that since I started Spanish just a couple weeks ago and am motivated as FUCK since I have a venezuelan best friend who's helping me

but I've let Dutch slip... a lot. I bought two Dutch books in Maastricht last year and I'm planning to read them both this year. I'm confident that will go well but I also know that, especially with Dutch, passive vocabulary and language skills are not the issues, active vocab is. I feel like I could barely produce a straight sentence right now, nevermind speak confidently with a native.

But being confronted with that through your ask, I've decided (while writing this), that I'll be taking notes in Dutch about the books while reading them (they're both non-fiction, one about OCD, the other about multilingualism – both central topics for me I'm super interested in). I know the issue with reading Dutch isn't understanding, it's that it just takes me longer than German or English and is more of a mental effort.

I should really try to get more immersion though and produce more on a regular basis, even if it's small stuff.

If you have YouTube or Spotify recs (music, videos, podcasts, audiobooks) do let me know!

I'd also generally be interested in language exchanges (this goes out to Dutch-, French-, Spanish-speakers and Latin-enthusiasts) (obv. I can mainly offer English and German) but be warned that I tend to have a turbulent life 😅

So overall: I've been slacking, I want to do more but it'll be hard to work that into my life right now...
