❅MCU Jotun Headcanons❅
in honor of @jotun-design-party by magpiemurder. I had been looking forward to this contest for several months, but i have not been able to do anything for it and i doubt i will magically be able to do something and submit it by the time the deadline roles around (which is in like less than a week). This makes me sad, especially since i was something i was actually looking forward to participating in (and for such a long time) :(.
but anyways. headcanons instead, i suppose:
(also these are not very organized so have fun with that)
while jotuns do have extremly low body temperatures, the "frost-bite" affect you see them inflict in Thor 2011 is not because of that. Instead, it is due to a residue on their skin (like poison dart frogs).
Unlike poison dart frogs, however, the residue doesn't just stay on their skin 24/7. Rather, it secretes out of their pores
When jotuns are young, it secretes automatically when they feel scared/threatened (or exhibit other strong emotions), but as they get older they learn how to control it and can do it on command (and also keep it from happening). (<- my reasoning for why loki's cloths froze and chipped away the first time but not the second)(sort of)
the blocky/chunky/heavy type architecture you see is because it is sturdy and can survive blizzards/other harsh elements
based off of what odin said in his monologue, jotunheim is "cold dark and barren," so the next few sort of are in line with that, but who know if he was actually telling the truth lol
not a lot of biodiversity (and FAR less plants than animals) :/ (i actually think it'd be cool to have a frozen planet teeming with life, but again, prev reason...)
since it's hard for plants to grow in such cold/dark places (lack of sun, dirt/nurtients, nutrient flow, liquid water, etc), the only "normal" plants you see are in the north pole (which is warmer, and is sort of a tundra type biome)(most plants typically aren't even there year-round). Everywhere else, plants have to find other ways to survive. Since photosynthesis isn't really a viable option (though there are a rare few that do!), most plants either perform chemosynthesis (x) or are parasitic (x). This also means that lots of plants are a ghostly white, rather than green (no chlorophyll).
licehen is less common than here, but can be found on occasion (and can be eaten)
mushrooms are relatively common, however (and unlike our mushrooms, can survive alright in the cold)
There isn't really any liquid water (and what little is seasonal), yet there are still life in the frozen water. There is a species of fish that produces so much warmth that the ice around them melts, and they swim through their self-made streams (that freeze back up once they've left). These fish eat snow/ice algae and ice worms (the algae and worms are actually real things in real life btw) (x) (x)
I thought it was interesting in the film how it's such a cold planet but nothing seemed to have fur, just skin... perhaps there are furred creatures, though, and they simply live in other regions. Id say the south pole, maybe the north pole, and and/or an isolated bit of land ("continent") on the opposite side of the planet. Long wooly fur. Horns. These creatures evolved to be warm on the cold, and the creatures we saw in the film simply evolved to not need to be warm at all.
the clothing you see the jotnar wear in the Thor 2011 is not their usual wear, it is their wartime/battle clothing.
This is because even though they are no longer literally warring, odin's treaty (aka sentence to slow genocide) was a "war against their people." As such, the majority of the jotnar choose to wear the wartime clothing until they all die out (as sort of a statement against odin/asgard's colonialism/imperialism)
(also probably "honor" or other culture type situation)
War clothing components:
Shaved Head: The jotnar typically grow their hair out long in times of peace, but shave it when times of war arise. In some regions, it is only those that go to battle that shave it, but in other regions all people shave it
Loincloth: made from Frost Beast leather. While frost beast hide is blue, the process to turn it into leather gives it a green tone (and is also becomes more rubbery than our leather). The sewing pattern of the loincloth itself typically is what gives it creative design, rather than having added embroidery/beading/embossing/etc.
Misc Decorations:
small decorative pieces are stuck directly to the skin via freezing water or using sticky sap-like substances. The most common places for these decorations are the head, upper chest, and shoulders. These pieces serve no protective functions, save the ones that are used to cover the nipples of jotuns with breasts (just around the nipple and areola, not the full breast).
small bracers, pauldrons, and greaves are sometimes worn.
Never shoes, pants/bottoms, shirts/tops.
Clothing should be NON besides the loincloth, and armour should be minimal and mainly decorative.
Decorative pieces are typically also made of frost beast leather. Metal is not usually used on jotunheim, because it is far to cold to melt anything (and to actually start a fire that hot would cause massive environmental damage). The only metal typically used it mercury, because it has such a low melting point (-38.829° C/-37.892° F). Interestingly, leather and mercury (and ice) are the only materials used in war clothing, not bone, even though bone is used in non-wartime clothing.
Overall Scarcity of clothing: While the jotnar don't typically get cold, they do want protection from cutting winds, ice, and snow (blizzards are strong enough that the snow can cause cuts/"burns"). As such, having such scarcity of clothing is a statement of strength/bravery and used to deter the enemy.
regular cloths cover more (to protect from the elements, not provide warmth). Leather, metal, fur, and fabric woven from wool are used. Bone and metal are also used. Typical colours would be the familiar green, dusty purple, grey/brown/black/white (fur colours), and some blue
piercings and gauging are popular, even though not always practical. Most popular places to pierce/gauge are the ears and nose.
Hair texture in the region where we visited in thor 2011 is typically smooth and silky (like lokis), but other hair textures (curly, coily) exist in different areas. All hair is typically raven-black, unless the jotun is albino (in which case, it would be white)
Unsure of:
i feel like jotuns would be carnivores, but at the same time i feel like loki would enjoy more vegetarian/pescatarian food options, so idk what to think :|
I feel like the casket of ancient winters would be taken straight from the core of the planet, and is super condensed ice and seiðr, and that's why taking it away ruined the planet
(but then that poses other questions, like why would they mine something and keep it as an artifact? were there warring tribes and they wanted to get ahead? did some foreign colonial/imperial power mine it and for their own gain and the jotuns only got it back later?)
also the other possibility is that the casket has to do with something of the passing of ancestors/powerful jotuns of the past and their seiðr or souls or smth is in it (and that would give more power to the "casket" part)
i actually i can think of a lot of things... but those are my main two for the casket
wait why are my indented bullet points not working anymore what!!! this was more neat-looking i swear
jotun breast milk does not have lactose. i will not elaborate.
ok those are all i can think of right now
(bonus loki-specific one: the reason he is so small was because his mom got stuck by lightning when she was pregnant)

15 days of deity devotion: Artemis
Tumblr media
Day 1: Basic Introduction
Artemis is the goddess of many great things and incredibly important to me - and I want to use the next 15 days putting her in the spotlight she so very much deserves.
Who is Artemis?
In literature she is listed as goddess of...
the wilderness, animals & hunting; [1] includes: of the wilds, wild beasts and hunting, forest fires, lakes & springs, fishing, roads, and harbors
dawn & frost;
births, infants, children; includes childbirth, protector of the nursing infant, and protector of young girls
maidenhood & marriage;
maiden dance & song;
disease & sudden death; also includes sickness in dogs (rabies)
healing & good health;
ritual purification;
ancestral goddess and protector of the fatherland;
goddess of the Amazons and Hyperboreans. [2]
As you can see, this includes a great many more aspects than you'd expect. This does not even touch upon her connections to human sacrifice (see: Taurian Artemis), fertility (see: Ephesian Artemis), nymphs (in her retinue, along with other mortals and hunters), and many more that I will touch on these next two weeks.
Famous myths
Artemis’ mother Leto was hounded throughout her pregnancy by the jealous goddess Hera but eventually found refuge on the floating island of Delos. There she gave birth to Artemis who assisted her mother as midwife with the birth of her younger twin-brother Apollon.
Kallisto (Callisto) was a handmaiden of the goddess who Zeus seduced by assuming Artemis’ form. When Artemis discovered the girl was pregnant she transformed her into a bear and exiled her to the wilds.
The handsome giant Orion was a companion of the goddess but her jealous brother Apollon tricked her into killing him with a distant bow-shot. In her grief Artemis placed him among the stars as the constellation Orion.
When the Aloadai (Aloadae) giants tried to storm Olympus, Artemis assumed the form of a doe and raced between them, causing the pair to cast their spears, miss, and strike each other dead.
The hunter Aktaion (Actaeon) spied upon the goddess as she was bathing with her nymphs at a spring. Angered, she transformed him into a stag and had him torn apart by his own hounds.
The giant Kalydonian (Caledonian) Boar was sent by Artemis to ravage the lands of King Oineus as punishment for neglecting her in his sacrifices to the gods.
As the Greek fleet were preparing to sail for Troy, King Agamemnon offended Artemis and she becalmed the waters, preventing their departure. To appease the goddess, the king was forced to sacrifice his own daughter Iphigenia. [3]

How To Protect Your Koi From Predators While Still Looking Aesthetically Pleasing
requested by @gallusrostromegalus
Firstly, a quick point about netting before I start. Netting is a bad idea. Several predators (raccoons, herons, and otters) will simply pull it up and get in anyways, and depending on the mesh size you're likely to injure and kill juvenile koi, frogs, and other animals that you do want in and around your ponds. Also, leaves caught in it in the fall can impede water flow and create stagnant areas, damaging plants, preventing oxygen circulation, and providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Finally, you're very likely to have to cut out injured or killed predators from it; the last thing you want is to have to remove a very angry, half-decapitated cottonmouth from your pond. Netting is a bad idea, don't do it.
With that said, let's dive in!
Aerial predators (seagulls, kingfisher, osprey, herons, idiot teenage bald eagles, etc.)
The best defense against aerial predators is making sure they can't see the pond in the first place.
Evergreen trees that can be trained to spread branches out over the pond, and aren't prone to fighting each other for space or breaking into the plumbing with their root systems, are good choices for year-round pond protection. Just make sure you know how big the root system is going to become and prepare accordingly- just because california redwoods can work for this purpose does not mean you will necessarily have a pond in 20 years if you use them!
This does mean that you're going to get needles, twigs, cones, and the occasional branch in your pond. With biofalls and a good filtration system, these shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as you're taking the time daily to clean things out (excepting mature redwood, but that's really just another reason not to use that species). You'll want to pick species that don't produce fruit or cones that the koi want to eat, because they will, even in winter when they can't digest food properly. Uncontrolled fruit bacchanals in spring and summer aren't necessarily harmful on their own, but will lead to massive spikes in ammonia and other waste products, which will in turn make your filter sad and give you a massive headache.
2. Land predators (cats, raccoons, foxes, also herons because it's complicated, etc.)
You're not going to be able to hide your pond in any meaningful way from these guys, so the goal is to make the koi as inaccessible to them as possible. A planted ledge before a sheer "drop" into the rest of the pond provides a lovely viewing point while keeping predators from having an area to hunt from. Ponds should be about three to four feet deep; as a rule of thumb, you want to be six or more inches below the frost line, or three feet, whichever is deeper. If you've got great blue herons, you want to be four feet deep at least, because they're lanky bastards.
Speaking of plantings, lily pads, irises, and cattails make beautiful additions to a pond while giving the koi hiding places. Planting cabomba on mesh shelters hides the appearance of the mesh, gives the koi a tasty treat, and provides shelter all in one go. And of course, smaller bamboo tubes or a nice plastic skull give the fry hiding places as well. You can also try duckweed, but many people don't find the appearance attractive, and koi are very good at de-establishing duckweed by eating all of it.
Otters, while land predators, are an exception here because the little bastards can dive and have hands. If you are getting otters in your pond, your problem is far larger than anything landscaping can help you with.
3. Aquatic predators (snapping turtles, water snakes, alligators, etc.)
Offer your koi plenty of hiding places. Otherwise? If you see one of these guys in your pond, you are just going to have to remove them. Put them in your car, drive them to a body of water you deem far enough away, and release them. That's all you can do.
This brings us back to the above point about netting; snakes will wriggle under or through the netting or kill themselves trying, and snapping turtles will just bull right through it. I don't know if netting helps against alligators, but I would not want to take that bet.
Bullfrogs are often considered aquatic predators. They will indeed eat juvenile koi. However, they're no more likely to than the adult koi, and the koi will eat juvenile bullfrogs, so my personal consideration is that it evens out. If you're breeding koi, your calculations are going to be different, but you should have a separate pond or indoor tank for raising the fry anyways.
(bullfrogs will also stop eating the juvenile koi if given regular meals of koi food, but I'm not sure this is healthy for them. I also haven't figured out how to prevent jeremiah from eating the koi food, so it's probably a moot point.)

Spring Headcanons for the Elves of First Age Beleriand
Autumn headcanons
Winter headcanons
Obviously I couldn’t go through each group or culture so please feel free to send one and I’ll tell my ideas for them! I’m going to do humans next. Feel free to request for outside of Beleriand too!
For elves the season of stirring (Echuir in Sindarin) begins the equivalent of February First and ends March 27th. Yestarë or Iestor is the first day of the year, approximately March 28th on the Gregorian calendar. Echuir (Sindarin) or stirring corresponds to February first to 27th March on the Gregorian calendar and ethuil or spring began on March 29th and ended May 21st.
Stirring and Spring are seasons of awakening. The frost melts, the rain replaces the snow, and the grounds become green once more. The elves become reacquainted with the earth.
(Note: I do think some elves hibernate but that’s a different post)
Note: I used a more canon climate for Beleriand and other lands here but I'm always happy to make environmental or other world building posts for locations based on other places including specific real ones like I did for the Havens of Sirion! I did talk about non temperate climates a little here and I did more on the winter posts
The Northern Sindar (in Mithrim and elsewhere in Hithlum as well as parts of Nevrast) mark the beginning of spring by the return of leaves to trees and through watching the migration of certain communities of birds back to their homes. Bird houses are built by some, constructed of natural materials like bark and woven grasses. Children often collect feathers left behind. The Northern Sindar also gather may apples, wild strawberries and rhubarb which are favorite spring edible flora. These are often used for cool drinks, the strawberries used to sweeten.
Seasonal changes in Doriath are mostly mild though there are regions that experience more extreme differences throughout the year. While snow rarely falls due to the Girdle, the winter months are still colder. Spring in Doriath brings a forest floor carpeted in new flora; crocuses, snowdrops, bluebells, wild tulips, primrose and more early spring flowers. Lighter materials are often worn in celebration of milder weather. Traditional outfits for spring use fabric created from nettle fibers, a custom shared with the Sindar outside Doriath as well as certain Avarin groups.
In Himring, stirring and then spring represent a slow release of the extreme cold and snowy conditions of the local winters. Visibility becomes clearer as the lands themselves are uncovered. Scouting groups, though in operation all year round, are sent out more often and for longer periods as travel and communication become easier. Trade also increases and rations become more generous. The gardens in Himring (post here) are started as soon as the ground is soft enough to allow for it.
Outside of this climate, the beginning of spring might indicate a rainy season as it does in some regions East of the Ered Luin. Some of the Silvan who live there gather water and collect rain for when the overflowing rivers become too dangerous to use reliably. Shelters are fortified with a variety of materials before the beginning of rainy season and in some locations settlements move temporarily to higher ground
Amphibians returning to activity occurs throughout Beleriand in early spring. Elven children (and human children of course!) often enjoy staying up to here the first choruses of frogs, searching for eggs and watching tadpoles. Many adults too find joy in this new continuing of life. In Nargothrond for example, there is a tradition to follow short migrations of salamanders as they reach the ponds they will lay eggs in.
(I worry this one isn’t as good as my previous ones, I hope it’s ok! Please feel free to give requests)

A Theory for Accurate Homestuck Quest Planets
Influenced by classpecting, I devised a way to create canon accurate Quest Planets (to a fault) based on a character’s god tier.
Homestuck planets seem to follow a pattern of Land of (Class) and (Aspect). This is a chart of examples of canon planet components matched with their corresponding classes and aspects. The numbers indicate whether the component is first or second in the Land of (1) and (2) template.
In order to form a planet you must come up with a component that fits into the category laid out by the class and aspect. For example, say I am a Page of Life. The Page’s category is earth. Life’s category is anything that symbolizes the Life aspect. So a Page of Life could quest on... say the Land of Pebbles and Overgrowth, where Pebbles = Earth (Page) and Overgrowth = Life Aspect. The order does not matter for any classpect but Space players.
Special Cases: The planets of Bards and Princes contain components for both their aspects and their opposites, instead of a unique class component. For example, a Prince of Space would quest on a planet like the Land of Clocks (Time) and Frogs (Space), instead of something related to the Prince class. Likewise, Space players will always have Frogs as the second component of their planet. Always. The only time this rule is broken is with a Bard or Prince of Time. In this case, their planet would contain a Space themed component that is not frogs. The planet might look something like the Land of Stardust (Space) and Clocks (Time).
All aspect symbol examples come from dahniwitchoflight.
Edit (2024): Post has been changed to include Muse and Lord. These planet components are based on speculation.
Muse (the Mutable): n/a
Sylph (Shine): Rays 1
Page (Earth): Mounds 1, Sand 1
Seer (Flow): Rain 2, Flow 2
Heir (Darkness): Shade 2, Caves 1

Mage (Thought): Brains 1
Witch (Clarity): Frost 1, Glass 2
Thief (Valuables): Treasure 2
Prince (Ghosts Both): Both Aspects
Lord (the Immutable): Colours 1

Brokenstar's Cataclysm scene that I desperately want to write living in my head rent-free: The moment where Brokentail kills Raggedstar
Raggedstar and his deputy solemnly walking to the border to talk to Tallstar again. He thought that with the death of Heatherstar, it might let up. She was the one who started this war, but her deputy Talltail was notorious for being the softer of the two.
Brokentail had told his father he was holding onto a foolish dream, but as usual, he didn't listen.
Heatherstar's last gift to her deputy was paid in the blood of good cats. Tallstar inherited a massive territory. The Mothermouth Moors belong to WindClan now, and he's got lots of warriors to enforce that border... lots of warriors to feed with it.
No, no proud Clan Leader would give that up
The last battle ended in an utter bloodbath. Deep wounds that would scar over if they were survived, permanent injuries, hunters out of commission for moons... graves still being dug from paws too weak to break the frost.
And Brokentail's father looked so old. "Do you remember Cedarstar, my son?" He speaks with distant fondness, like they're just out chasing frogs on a warm greenleaf morning.
"...no. No I don't," as soon as he says it, he's angry at himself for humoring such a stupid conversation
"You were very, very young when he died. He was a young leader when this all started, and then I picked up the fight when he--"
"When WindClan killed him the ninth time," Brokentail's been trying to hold it together, but he's lost it in the end, as usual. Raggedstar sighs,
"I'm sick of this argument. An end is finally in sight--"
He's cut off again, this time Brokentail can't bite back the venom, "An end in sight? He's going to keep our land and graciously give us back our own rabbits! Tallstar is a black-and-white fox with the tongue of a rat and you're just going to GIVE him our--"
"Brokentail," The command is sharp enough that it makes Brokentail stop mid-sentence, but the rage is trembling in every tip of his raggedy fur, "Tallstar is offering more than he's obligated to give us. ShadowClan lost."
Brokentail doesn't stop his furious tears, "What happens when the deal's off, eh?! When Tallstar and his rogues push further south?! When his next little grubby negotiation pops up?! What'll we give him next, our territory, our blood, our kits??"
Raggedstar shakes his head, "We lost."
"No! We HAVEN'T lost, you're giving up! And if we give up then what-- what was it all for?"
He slumps into the snow, wretchedly, the last season flashing through his mind. Raggedstar dying twice, once to wounds and second to infection, Lizardstripe falling limp to the ground, her eyes still wide with horror, Mudfoot's paws twitching after his collapse, a fear on Runningnose's face so genuine it was unbecoming...
What was it all for, if they give up now?
What was it for?
Raggedstar is done with this. "You are a deputy, not a kit. Nothing's for anything. We fight for our honor, sometimes a scar is your only reward, and good cats die," he turns, "I'm ending this war for you, son. One day you'll understand that."
When the wind blows, it flattens Raggedstar's thick pelt against his thin frame. Brokentail watches him walk away from behind, his hipbones sliding under thin skin. It dawns on him how frail he's become. How tired.
He's on his last life. Runningnose kept track.
Brokentail stands up, silently.
He decides that the last kindness he can give his father is a quick death.
