Varanosuchus: First Fossil Croc of 2024
We are two weeks into the year and we already had a bunch of big croc papers, so today I'll cover the first of the two new genera named so far. Varanosuchus sakonnakhonensis (Monitor lizard crocodile from Sakon Nakhon) is a small atoposaurid neosuchian from the Early Cretaceous of Thailand, a country that has seen a virtual boom in croc papers this past year between the description of Alligator munensis and Antecrocodylus.
Varanosuchus was a small animal, maybe a meter in length if a little longer with a notably short and deep skull and long slender limbs revealing it to have been at least somewhat terrestrial. We actually have a decent amount of material of this guy. The holotype consists of a 3 dimensionally preserved skull as well as assorted postcranial remains (vertebrae, ribs, osteoderms and limbs), there is a second skull of whats likely to be a differently aged individual also showing a 3D skull and well the third ones just a skull table but 2/3 is still great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now this guy was an atoposaurid, which is a group of crocodylomorphs that lived from the Jurassic to the end of the Cretaceous, their last members existing on the island of Hateg some 66 million years ago. Atopsaurids were generally small animals with short snouts and longish legs. Some examples of atoposaurids include Knoetschkesuchus from Germany, Aprosuchus from Romania and Alligatorellus from France and Germany, all three pictured below, art by @knuppitalism-with-ue
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the matter of ecology for atoposaurids in general and Varanosuchus in particular is not clear. Altirostral skulls such as that of Varanosuchus are generally associated with terrestrial crocodylomorphs as best examplified by notosuchians. Their teeth and size both obviously speak against being shoreline ambush predators like modern crocs and their legs are straight and slender, suggesting they had an erect posture and not the more sprawling one seen in semi-aquatic forms. Though they could have still had some aquatic affinities. The authors for instance argue that the osteoderms, having plenty of pits, are more like those of an animal that spends time in the water and would thus use them in thermoregulation. So maybe they did enter water from time to time, somewhat like some modern lizards, tho I think its fairly certain that they spend a decent amount of time on land. The artwork below is the reconstruction from the paper itself.
Tumblr media
Another matter discussed in the paper is phylogeny, more precisely the relationship of Neosuchians and how Eusuchia is defined. On the first front, its worth noting that the paper recovered both atoposaurids and paralligatorids as monophyletic groups and had them be each others closest relatives, a notion that has been recovered before. More interesting perhaps is the fact that the next closest relatives to these two were hylaeochampsids and Bernissartia, which are typically recovered closer to modern crocs. Which in fact form a separate branch that is the sister group to all the afforementioned clades and taxa. And then you got goniopholids, dyrosaurs and pholidosaurs which are all more basal than the paralligatorid+atoposaurid+crocodilian group, which is back to the ordinary really. The second thing is the definition of Eusuchia. So for the longest time Eusuchia has been defined to include those Neosuchians that have choanae that are fully enclosed by the pterygoid bones (I know I know a bunch of anatomy stuff bear with me). So if the choanae was surrounded by the pterygoid, its an Eusuchian, if not, its more basal. Well, atoposaurids don't have that....BUT VARANOSUCHUS DOES. This, coupled with hylaeochampsids also having this feature and being recovered closer to atoposaurids than to Crocodilians basically suggests that the feature is not diagnostic for Eusuchia and instead appeared multiple times independently.
Moving away from anatomy and phylogeny and all that stuff, I think its very cool that croc research in Thailand has kinda picked up this last year. And fittingly enough some people have even worked on a short documentary covering the known diversity of pseudosuchians from Thailand, giving an overview over the named forms from the Jurassic to today, from titans like Chalawan to even these newest dwarf forms. While the narration is obviously in Thai, there are English subs and I highly recommend looking into it (even if I disagree with their depiction of Varanosuchus as arboreal, its perhaps overshooting the goal a little bit).
youtube
Finally here's the paper itself (tho paywalled) New Cretaceous neosuchians (Crocodylomorpha) from Thailand bridge the evolutionary history of atoposaurids and paralligatorids | Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society | Oxford Academic (oup.com) and the wikipedia page I've been working on Varanosuchus - Wikipedia
I'll try to write up a post on the other new genus, Garzapelta, later this weekend so stay tuned for that.

I can vibe with that! Have some really quick mock up designs of a psychic type Rose (with a Gothitelle as her signature pokemon) and a fairy type Rose (with an Aromatisse). I might try and refine these designs later.

Spiderman Into/Across/Beyond the Spiderverse but it's Sebek but also there is no spiders and there is no getting powers
The "Miles Morales" in this situation is a Sebek who lives in our kind of world: no magic, no cryptic old faes, no superheroes, no nada. He's 15 years old, first year, still trying to figure out what he wants to do in life. He knows that he's been raised to join Diasomnia's business, by his own family and Lilia himself, but after a few encounters with a group that we all know and love, he begins to doubt this.
As he tries to live up to Malleus and Lilia's expectations as well as be able to stand by Silver's side and not be in his shadow, he hangs out with the first years: They're the "Uncle Aaron," except not? They dont die, I prommy.
The first years are the ones who truly understand him, and consequently the ones who get him into trouble. They all frequent this abandoned station that Ace apparently found all by himself (His big brother did). Sebek gets a call, bidding the group goodbye and realizes that it's Malleus. He nervously picks up the call, where Malleus tells him to come "home," which is really just Silver and Sebek's shared apartment. Which is just inside Diasomnia Industries. Which is literally a 10 minute walk from the abandoned station LMFAO
He's greeted by Lilia at the door and everyone's sitting around at the couch. Malleus and Lilia talk about going abroad and, once Silver is done with his third year, that they would like to bring him along with them. Sebek speaks up, kind of like "Haha what about me once I finish MY third year," and thats when it is revealed to him that he will stay where he is. He'll be assigned to another branch of Diasomnia while Malleus, Lilia, and Silver go to the main one.
Sebek is just sat there gaping like a fish, as Malleus, Lilia and Silver go on and on about this being a good experience for him and how maybe after a few years he could also join them, but here's the thing: the whole reason Sebek is in this stupid school with Silver is because of them. He got rid of all his other hobbies and interests because he felt at home with these three and wanted to join them only to find out that all that is for nothing because theyre just going to go off into another country. Years is going to seem like nothing to them but to Sebek? Thats an eternity.
He unexpectedly snaps when Malleus says something along the lines of, "Im sure youll be fine" after Sebeks question if its really a good idea. He runs away in shame, back to the rest of the first years who reassure him and shit before Sebek finally feels ready to go back.
By the time he does however, he sees Silver inside his room. Sebek is back to pissed again because "???why r u going through my stuff what the hell" before Silver picks up a photo and shows it to Sebek. Its him and the first years. "Who are these guys?" The insult that was about to leave Sebek's mouth suddenly died down in his throat.
"'March 17, XXXX.'" Silver's eyes darkened. "This...this was last year. The whole time we were waiting for you to come home...you were hanging out with them?" Surprise Sebek celebrated his bday with the first years instead of Diasomnia lol. Dia 3 have already noticed that he's becoming distant for like months now, but they dont know WHY.
This spirals into a fight again, where Silver says something along the lines of "What, youd rather be with them than us? Your family?" and Sebek responds with "UH YEAH IF YOU GUYS KEEP BEING PRICKS????" Silver threatens Sebek that he'll tell Malleus and Lilia about his escapades, causing Sebek to- you guessed it!!!! RUN AWAY AGAIN
As he reaches the station, he realizes the first years r gone for some reason. They usually end up staying past 7 anyway and it IS past 7 so where are they??? Suddenly, the whole city blacks out. Sebek quickly turns on the flashlight because ooo creepy abandoned station. He hears a noise from the tunnel, almost like a running engine but psht thats impossible right??? Its not called ABANDONED for a reason-
OH SHIT I ALMOST GOT HIT BY A TRAIN
For SOME honest to god reason there is a TRAIN and suddenly Sebek is face to face with its doors. The windows are sleek black, making it impossible to see from the outside. The doors open, and Sebek is quick to take a step back and run away-
On March 6, Sebek Zigvolt goes missing.

Mekosuchus
My recent-most Wikipedia deep dive was in equal parts enlightening and frustrating and it concerned no other than Mekosuchus, everyones favourite heartbreaker of a recently extinct crocodile.
For those unfamiliar, let me give you some footnotes before getting into the nitty gritty. Mekosuchus is, or was, a genus of terrestrial (NOT ARBOREAL) dwarf crocodile from Australasia, first appearing during the Late Oligocene. They were small, how small we don't precisely know but its generally estimated that adults would be in the 1-2 meter range (so about 3 to 6 feet I believe?). The heartbreaking part? The last confirmed Mekosuchus died out only 3.000 years ago, and some publications even suggest they could have stuck around until just 1.700 years ago. Yeah, we got REALLY close.
Art by yours truly, I'll explain the massive difference down below, just be patient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But lets get some of the basics out of the way. Mekosuchus was a small mekosuchine crocodilian and currently, four species are recognized. Mekosuchus whitehunterensis is the oldest from the Oligocene/Miocene of mainland Australia, immediately succeeded by M. sanderi during the Miocene. Both these species were described as having had blade-like posterior teeth (at the back of the jaw) and both coexisted with a ton of other crocs, including Baru, Quinkana and some bizarre ones like Ultrastenos.
After a bizarre break in the fossil record, Mekosuchus shows up again during the Holocene on the islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu, ironically mirroring the meiolaniid turtles I talked about previously. Fossils are securely dated to about 3.000 years ago, but Balouet and Buffetaut also suggested that some of the younger remains may only be 1.720 years old, overlapping with human settlements. But this isn't accepted by everyone. Regardless, these species differ from their older cousins by lacking the blade-like teeth, instead going for crushing dentition.
Art by artbyjrc and Kahless28
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With such different teeth comes different ecology, of course. A 2015 study suggests that the neck vertebrae of M. whitehunterensis were well adapted to rapid stresses, specifically caused by side-to-side movement of the head. It is thus speculated that they shook their heads to strip meat from carcasses, rather than performing the iconic death roll (as that might hurt the animal on land).
M. inexpectatus meanwhile was seemingly better adapted at crushing hard-shelld things, crabs, insects, maybe snails even. Holt and colleagues suggest that it might have lived much like a modern dwarf crocodile, spending its time in river streams and coming out at night to forage. Dwarf crocodile via the San Diego Zoo and Mekosuchus illustrated by my friend BatmanelVisigodo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both however are thought to be terrestrial, having short, altirostral skulls, big eyes and nares that face sideways, not upwards as in semi-aquatic crocodilians. They were however NOT ARBOREAL. Yes I know I know, its a bummer. To those unaware, a commonly cited missconception is that Mekosuchus was a tree-dweller, which was originally suggested by Paul Willis in the 1990s. However, this was more of an off-hand comment at the time that certain people (including me in the past) have run with, causing it to spread and be almost considered fact by some. Hell, it says a lot when Mekosuchus, in many circles, is thought of as "that tree croc". However, not only was Willis suggestion based on the now outdated notion that monitor lizards weren't around at the same time, later authors also note that the toes of Mekosuchus really don't show any adaptations to climbing specifically. So alas, it would seem that this was only a myth. But don't worry too much, sometimes crocs climb regardless, just not vertically up a tree. Mekosuchus artwork by Manusuchus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now at the beginning I teased that there's a reason why my images for M. whitehunterensis and M. inexpectatus look so different. Well its kind of painful really. Despite being known for about 30 years now, with 300+ bones known from New Caledonia alone, Mekosuchus is incredibly poorly studied. The original description only figured around half a dozen bones and while the next three species were all named in the span of just 5 years, they are all incredibly fragmentary. And then, just after another expedition collected more bones....things went silent.
The last 20 years saw the publication of only a single paper extensively dealing with Mekosuchus itself, with two skull reconstructions coming out in less detailed sources. The first is Holt et al. 2007, a powerpoint presentation from a paleontological conference. The presentation made some fascinating claims and even provided a reconstruction of the skull, but sadly. Nothing ever came of it, the research was never formally published and the lead author has since then changed fields into Astronomy. Actually had a nice talk with him earlier today. Then there's Scanlon 2014, which offers even less. In the book  Carnivores of Australia: past, present and future, Scanlon briefly touches upon mekosuchines, featuring a new composite reconstruction of M. whitehunterensis. However, this is not elaborated on in the text, despite the drastic differences to how M. inexpectatus has been reconstructed before. So we are left with two very different appearances. Are they simply really different looking species? Is one interpretation faulty? Should Mekosuchus be split? Who knows, might be a while until we figure it out. But until then, here's the two together, one looking much like a dwarf crocodilian, the other more like a sebecid. An interesting contrast for sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As per usual, this research was done as part of me doing a major haul of a Wikipedia page which you can read here Mekosuchus - Wikipedia. It's been an interesting, if a little frustrating task, but it was fun properly reading up on this animal and putting this information out there for people that don't wanna dig through 30 years of literature (including one paper in French). Hopefully I suceeded, at least the page is a bit bulkier now.

The Three J’s
PAIRING: Natasha x Reader, heavily featuring Jeff the Landshark
WORDS: 1.6K WARNINGS: none that I can think of
SUMMARY: You and Natasha leave for a mission, and Jeff decides to tag along
A/N: On a whim, I decided to write a Jeff the Landshark fic. Honestly, I had a ton of fun writing this. I am definitely beginning to see the appeal of writing. I still dont know if im any good at it tho lol
Jeff was napping in the common room when he heard voices coming down the hall. He immediately recognized it as your voice, followed by Natasha’s laughter.
“I’m just saying, have you ever heard Clint sleep? He’s gotta be part bear by the way he snores”
“Fair, but he’s not the only one”
Jeff lifted his head up to watch you two as you walked through the room, carrying your mission gear and heading towards the holding bay.
You looked at her incredulously, “What do you mean by that??”
Natasha suppressed a laugh, “I didn’t want you to find out like this, but…you’re not exactly a quiet sleeper.”
“…I snore?”
She laughed, “Yes Y/N, you snore a little”
Jeff snorted to himself. Even the landshark had noticed you were quite the heavy breather when sleeping.
Burying your face in your hands, you groaned, “oh god that’s so embarrassing. How bad is it?”
“Not awful, I only notice it every now and then, I promise!”
“Ugh, I’m sorry Nat…I didn’t know”
Still chuckling softly, Natasha leaned in to kiss your cheek. “Don’t worry detka, I still love you. Even with the snoring.”
“Alright alright, I love you too. Now can we drop this? We should focus on the mission.”
A mission? Jeff frowned to himself. That meant you and Natasha would be leaving and he would be alone at the compound again. He hated being left alone and stuck in the compound with nothing to do. But, maybe this time he didn’t have to be. As quietly as he could, Jeff got to his feet and followed you both towards the quinjet.
By the time Jeff reached the hanger, you and Natasha were already aboard the jet making final preparations, but luckily, the back door was still open. Jeff quickly looked around to make sure no one was watching, and ran up the ramp.
Once aboard, he could hear the two of you still bantering about your sleeping habits from the front of the jet. He made his way to the cargo area and tucked himself under a seat and awaited takeoff.
A couple of hours later, Jeff awoke from his nap to a flurry of activity on the jet. Natasha and you were moving around grabbing last minute gear as the quinjet came in for a landing. “Alright, it's a simple mission.” Nat told you as she adjusted her suit, ”There have been reports of strange and dangerous creatures spotted in the area. We’re here mostly to observe and make sure hydra hasn’t started anything. There should be no real threat, but we should stay on alert.”
“It should be easy then. Let's move out.”
Once the two of you had left the jet, Jeff shuffled out from under the chair. He wandered around the jet, sniffing at the hoodie Natasha had left in her chair (technically it was your hoodie, but Natasha said otherwise), peering out the windows, and poking around at the controls. What he did, he wasn’t sure, but suddenly the backdoor of the jet opened with a buzz. Jeff sprinted towards the open door and into the woods.
After getting his fill of running around the woods Jeff finally slowed down and began to properly explore. He sniffed at all the trees, dove into piles of leaves before he discovered a wild blueberry bush. Jeff’s stomach grumbled loudly and he gladly helped himself to the fruit. Suddenly - crunch!
Jeff lifted his head up at the sudden noise from behind him. He looked around him, but didn’t see anything so he went back to his berries.
SNAP
Another sound from behind him. This time Jeff got a little worried. Didn’t Natasha say there were monsters in the area? Maybe he shouldn’t have left the jet. He slowly began to make his way back, but his appetite got the better of him and he turned to grab one more bite of blueberry.
Just as he opened his mouth, Jeff heard a low grrrrrrrrr from behind him and spotted a flash of gold through the trees.
Jeff’s blood turned cold. What was that? Leaving all his blueberries behind, he started running back to the jet. As he ran, he heard multiple sets of footsteps behind him and closing fast.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of hours later, you and Natasha had finished up with the mission. Overall, it had been pretty boring. It seems the rumors of strange creatures were just that; rumors. You had found a few tracks, but they looked like foxes or bears, pretty normal for the area.
Together you and Natasha walked back towards the jet. Just as you were expressing your disappointment in not seeing any animals, Natasha suddenly grabbed your arm and yanked you behind a tree.
“Jeez Nat, what are you doing? You nearly dislocated my arm!” You complained.
“Y/N stop being dramatic and shut up for a second.” Nat whispered to you, “the quinjet’s door is wide open. I am positive it was shut when we left.”
“damn it” You cursed, “ do you think someone is in the jet?”
“That’s a distinct possibility. Weapons out and stay alert.”
You drew your weapon and followed Natasha out from behind the tree. The two of you slowly approached the jet door, ready for an ambush at any moment. You froze at the sound of footsteps and you pointed your gun in their direction.
“Mrrrr?”
Suddenly Jeff was running out of the jet and towards you with a huge grin on his face.
You lowered your gun with a sigh, “god damn it Jeff, we could have hurt you! What are you doing here? I thought you were at the compound.”
Jeff just looked at you sadly, “Mrrrrr.”
Natasha sighed. “He must have gotten lonely and stowed away on the jet. How he got the door open is anyone's guess.”
Jeff just smirked and shrugged, before grabbing your pant leg with his teeth and tugging you towards the open doors of the jet.
“Hey woah, buddy slow down.” You knelt down in front of him, “are you okay? Is there something in the jet?”
“Mrrr!” Jeff turned and excitedly ran up the ramp and into the jet.
You and Natasha just looked at each other. “Well” Natasha said, “I guess we follow him.”
The two of you followed after Jeff and into the jet, only to be met with a completely unexpected sight. Rather than seeing just Jeff waiting for you, you saw three animals.
Jeff was sitting in the middle, looking very proud of himself. On his left, sat what looked like a small bear? A dog? A wolverine! That's what it was. The wolverine simply sat there and glared at you, huffing every now and then. On Jeff’s right, sat a crocodile with a gold crown on his head. A very familiar looking gold crown.
“...is that… a Loki crown?” You questioned.
She stared at you incredulously. “That’s your first question? Not ‘why are there strange animals in our jet?’ or ‘where did they come from?’”
“I mean, it's a valid question.” You said, “but you make a good point. Where did they come from?”
Natasha frowned. “They’ve got to be the creatures that we got the reports about.”
You nodded. “Jeff must have brought them here. If he made friends with them, they’ve got to be friendly.”
“Are you sure about that?” Nat asked, eyeing the wolverine who was still glaring at the both of you.
Jeff let out an indignant, “Mrrrrrrrr!”
You laughed lightly, “does that answer your question?” You moved closer to the animals, kneeling to be on their level. You reached out to Jeff, who immediately nuzzled your hand. “Hey there buddy. Are these your new friends?”
Jeff nodded and let out happy noises. Natasha moved to stand behind you while the other two animals also moved closer. The crocodile reached you first, nudging your knee with his nose. “Hey there little guy. You're not actually Loki are you?” Instead of answering, the croc just stared back at you silently. “Okay then. I’ll take that as a no.”
Next, you reached out towards the wolverine, only to receive a low growl and another glare. You tried again, but this time the creature bared his teeth at you. You raised your hands defensively, “okay okay, no touching. Got it.”
You stood back up and looked at Natasha. “What are we supposed to do with them? Take them back to the compound?”
Natasha looked back and forth between the two animals before shrugging. “I suppose so. Tony’s not going to be too happy about it, but we can't throw them out.”
You nodded. “Okay then. I guess we're adopting two new sons, yeah?”
“I guess so,” Natasha chuckled. “If we’re adopting them, they need names. Any ideas?”
“I think we should stick with the ‘J’ theme.” You thought for a second, “that one looks like Loki, so maybe Jroki?”
“.....Jroki?”
“Why not? He seems to like it.”
The crocodile, or Jroki, had laid down and closed his eyes, smiling contentedly.
You turned towards the wolverine and he walked right up to Natasha and sat on her feet. She leaned down and scratched the creature between his ears. The wolverine closed his eyes and let out what sounded like a purr.
“Huh,” Nat said. “He likes me”
You groaned, “now that's just unfair.”
Natasha laughed, “Don't get jealous just because Jonathan likes me better.”
“Jonathan?”
“Why not?” she said, mimicking your words from earlier.
You just rolled your eyes. “Okay then, it's settled. Jroki the crocodile and Jonathan the wolverine, you boys get to come home with us.”
Jeff let out a happy, “MRRRR” and ran in circles around you.
You laughed, “someone is happy to have two new brothers.”
Natasha raised her eyebrows. “Brothes huh? Does that make us a family now?”
You wrapped an arm around her waist. “You, me, and our three boys. One big happy family.”

Here are the things I’m thinking of offering for the Marvel Trumps Hate auction this year! Jeff the Land Shark is done, but the rest are pictures of things I made but no longer have, so I’m looking for opinions on what you’d like to see available for the charity auction (so I know what to make lol) I’d probably sew crocodile Loki instead of crochet him, but other than that I’d be using the same exact patterns!
