I love fics where Sizhui has to endure the mortifying ordeal of Watching People Hit On His Dads, with bonus points for fics that cover the thirteen years WWX was in repose and Sizhui’s whiplash from watching LWJ coldly reject every would-be suitor he comes across only for him to immediately be okay with being hit on by crazy Mo Xuanyu
But you know what I really want? A fic in a similar vein, only it’s Jingyi’s POV and it follows Sizhui being Ruthlessly Polite to all of the adults who have ever tried to bond with him in order to get to his dad. Some of them tried to schmooze the kid to influence Hanguang-Jun for political reasons, some for money reasons. The worst were the ones to thought they could influence Lan Wangji into a marriage by being all motherly to his kid. A-Yuan learns to sniff that bullshit out a mile away and extremely good at maintaining boundaries with weird adults who want to get too friendly with him.
Then literally less than a day after meeting the guy Sizhui is turning to “Mo Xuanyu” like a flower to the sun, entirely open and trusting.
Jingyi is ????????? and Sizhui is like idk I just think he’s neat :)

Imagine if there's a fanclub for Wei Wuxian and the junior quartet and all the young disciples are part of it. Like every second friday of the month, they congregate to the Jin Sect and discus Wei Wuxian.
Jin Ling always ends up bragging about Wei Wuxian being his martial uncle, while Lan Jingyi interjects with a slight smile and says he's my shifu's husband.
Lan Sizhui interrupts and says very politely with a smile, "He's my dad, so..."
"He's my husband,"
Pin drop silence ensues when Lan Wangji, who followed them because he was curious why his lan disciples left for LanLing every month said this.
They all rush to explain themselves but Lan Wangji just waves a hand and tells them they're all good as long as he gets to join and he gets the first pick on merchandise.
And so every second Friday, the lan juniors go to Lanling with their Hangguang-jun beside them. Nie Huaisang is also in these meetings somehow, they don't know how he entered but he makes the merchandise.
So they don't question it.

Was thinking about how a grief stricken Lan Wangji found little A-Yuan and took him in, and through the haze of having lost the love of his life in the way he always feared he would, he finds a way to tether himself to the world and the last connection he could possibly have to Wei Ying, and he comes to love A-Yuan as his own and he is SUCH A GOOD DAD and then A-Yuan grows up to be SUCH A GOOD BOY but he always feels this missing piece until he meets Wei Wuxian and then suddenly the puzzle pieces start to fall into place and yes I DID start crying in the shower but it’s okay guys I love the world of MDZS and it’s characters a completely normal amount

"What good with that do? Besides, fuck, can you imagine Wen Ning's face? I'd feel terrible. Also I just like her, but I seriously couldn't look Wen Ning in the eye if I killed his sister."
Wei Wuxian's priorities are so fucked up. "Okay. I'm assuming, that since she's still alive, Lan Wangji doesn't know?"
He winces. "No, of course not, if I tell him it will be far away from her where I can be suitably distracting."
Gross. "You want to tell dad to go to war with the Wen again?"
"Well," he says awkwardly, "I was sort of hoping you'd do it."
He hates this fucking family.

The Sin List
okay, so as we all know, it is vitally important that any character we stan must be morally pure and a good example to emulate in real life.
So I have decided to create a list of MDZS characters and their sins, which everyone can easily refer to in order to make sure that they are not following some horrible criminal or murderer!
This was a lot of work, but I'm very proud of it. Just doing my bit to ensure the moral purity of the fandom!
Wei Wuxian - Necromancy, disrespecting his elders, disrespecting the dead, killed Jin Zixuan, punched Jin Zixuan in the face one time, cannibalism, mind control, deviant sexual fantasies, trespassing, oath-breaking, urged Wen Qing to perform untested and possibly fatal operation on Jiang Cheng without his consent.
Lan Wangji - Defied his elders, broke the Lan Clan rules, sexually assaulted Wei Wuxian, deviant sexual fantasies, GBH (JGY)
Jin Guangyao - betrayed and killed Wen Ruohan, betrayed and killed Jin Guangshan, murder (NMJ), murdered assorted people, disrespecting the dead, assorted Spy Things for Wen Ruohan.
Nie Mingjue - Killed a lot of people during the war, verbally abused Nie Huaisang, burned Nie Huaisang's stuff, attempted murder (JGY), attempted murder (JGY), attempted murder (JGY), murder (JGY), killed the Mo family (well, his arm did anyway). In favor of the genocide of the Wen Remnants
Jin Guanshan: Sexual assault, rape, murder, ordering human experimentation with resentful energy to be done by his sect, played both sides during the war, didn't take responsibility for his children, ultimately responsible for getting WWX killed because he wanted the YTT so bad
Wen Ruohan: Attempted world domination, murder etc
Lan Qiren: has a stick up his ass
Su Minshan: Refused to die for the Lan, supported JGY in his efforts to prevent undead Da-ge from killing him. Also cursed Jin Zixun.

Jiang Wanyin: strangled Wei Wuxian that one time, keeps trying to talk to him but is way too tsundere about it, killed many during the war, didn't immediately forgive WWX for getting JYL killed, threatens to break Jin Ling's legs weekly.

JFM: shit dad, throw him in a volcano

Meng Shi: was a prostitute. Told Meng Yao his dad was amazing and he should totally look him up later.

Nie Huaisang: killed cats, nearly killed the juniors, let his sect fall into ruin, traded obscene materials, disrespecting his sect's traditions, lied to Lan Xichen to make him kill JGY
Wen Qing: went along with WRH's plans, performed surgery on JC without his consent
Wen Ning: Was part of the burning of LP
Mo Xuanyu: Summoned Satan to murder his relatives, harassed his brother

Mdzs modern au where Wei Wuxian is Wen Qing's beard. So the situation goes like this, Wen Qing has a rich uncle that pays for her education on the condition that she gets good grades and shit, when she got into med school Wen Chao, that bitch, let it slip to his dad that Wen Qing was a lesbian, in order to secure her bag she told her uncle that he was lying and that she actually had a boyfriend, of course her uncle then wanted to meet said boyfriend and then enters Wei Ying, Wen Ning's best friend and the perfect man for the job. Unlike most fake dating AUs this one doesn't end up with them together, it ends with Wen Qing graduating then finding out that her uncle didn't care that she was gay, bro has had gay sex himself so he can see the appeal, and Wei Wuxian eloping with Lan Wangji (who may or may not have been praying on that relationship's downfall since day one), everyone is happy except Wen Chao

Was thinking about how often I see reactionary pro-Jiang Cheng content, and I just realized something: jc stans, just like their fav, believe that every good thing Wei Wuxian has—whether loved ones or good memories or admirable characteristics or character growth, whether canon or fanon—is actually the rightful property of Jiang Cheng that Wei Wuxian “stole” from him through the sin of existing, and it is their sworn duty to correct this “oversight” of canon.
Wei Wuxian gets his happily ever after with the love of his life, so jc stans give Jiang Cheng Lan Xichen and call Lan Wangji “second place.” Or they make Lan Wangji a cheater because “he actually likes Jiang Cheng more (who doesn’t, amiright?)” or Wei Wuxian a cheater because “he can never appreciate a good thing like Jiang Cheng can.” People point out how Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang seem to have had a closer relationship than Nie Huaisang and Jiang Cheng, so jc stans make the latter two a ship or make them the bestest friends ever that bond over being annoyed with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian has a close relationship with the Wen siblings, so jc stans make Wen Qing spend all their time together saying that Jiang Cheng “was right” about him while Wen Ning is being “bullied” into being “anti-jc.”
Wei Wuxian is canonically smart and driven, so jc stans say that he is lazy while Jiang Cheng is hardworking. Wei Wuxian is canonically charismatic, so jc stans say that it was actually Jiang Cheng who was loved by all the disciples and is the sole reason the Jiang Clan of the present was able to pull in new disciples post-fall. Wei Wuxian loves to learn, so jc stans say that Jiang Cheng was actually a model student being sabotaged by the slovenly Wei Wuxian.
People imagine the Lan as accepting Wei Wuxian post-canon or imagine aus where the Lan adopt him as a child, so jc stans make Jiang Cheng the adopted Lan child, who Lan Qiren now likes better than his own nephews. People write Nie!wwx, so jc stans write about how “actually” Nie Mingjue sees Jiang Cheng as the brother he never had and views Wei Wuxian as an unwanted nuisance and competition. People make the most batshit ooc au where the QishanWen are actually good and adopt Wei Wuxian, and jc stans turn that into actually, the Jiang siblings are adopted while Wei Wuxian stays with the “totally horrible, abusive” father in Yunmeng. Fucking Baoshan Sanren descends from her mountain to look for her martial grandson, and jc stans will shove Jiang Cheng into the narrative as a disciple because “he’s just so lovable!” In all of these cases, some will still imagine that Wei Wuxian still gets left on the streets as a petty afterthought.
Shit, even some of the BAD things that happen to Wei Wuxian canonically are misappropriated by jc stans to give Jiang Cheng unearned sympathy. Wei Wuxian was whipped as a child? Now Jiang Cheng was too, but also his dad hates him. Wei Wuxian is an orphan who creates his own family in adulthood? Jiang Cheng is now disowned/an unloved runaway who later finds his people because who wouldn’t want him (amiright?). Wei Wuxian was at risk of losing his golden core completely in the transfer if it failed? Well Jiang Cheng was going to DIE! “See? Look how much harder Jiang Cheng’s life was than that pathetic attention whore Wei Wuxian! Doesn’t he deserve all the things Wei Wuxian has? Aren’t they rightfully his???”
And it’s like, you can’t even escape into fan content with this type of mentality, because look out how much I mentioned is popular fanon. Notice how ubiquitous these ideas are surrounding anything to do with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng, even if only one of them is mentioned. No matter what anyone reads in the novel, no matter what individuals come up with in their own heads, no matter what tag or platform is used or not used to keep it out of their hands, jc stans will be there to create a reactionary counterpart to prove that nothing, nothing can ever just be Wei Wuxian’s. Because at the end of the day, the “oversight” that jc stans want to correct isn’t Jiang Cheng’s supposed depreciation by the author. The “oversight” was the author daring to say that Wei Wuxian deserves to be treated as his own person and not Jiang Cheng’s personal property. And every fandom interaction has been retaliation towards that fact.
The main character of the novel is relegated to mere a lightning rod that exists to attract all of Jiang Cheng’s bad qualities while injecting him with all of Wei Wuxian’s good, but jc stans wonder why people are upset.

But Wei Wuxian has never been good at ignoring knowledge, no matter the consequences, and he does not look away.

Summary: “Suibian?” a deep voice says suddenly, catching his attention. Wei Ying opens his eyes to look at who approached and promptly finds himself without breath at the sight of the man in front of him. After all these years he shouldn’t recognize him so easily, but Wei Ying would never be able to forget those eyes. “Oh!” Wen Ning squeaks. “You are familiar with Suibian?” Wei Ying watches as Lan Zhan nods to Wen Ning. “I am. Are you the creator of Yiling Cuties?” “Ah? Oh, no. No, that would be him,” Wen Ning replies, somewhat flustered. It takes far too long for Wei Ying to realize that Wen Ning just diverted Lan Zhan’s attention to him because suddenly those golden brown eyes are staring directly into his soul and it hurts more than he would have expected. OR Wei Ying and Lan Zhan lost touch when Wei Ying's family moved away when they were kids. Wei Ying moves back to his hometown years later, meeting the man he once knew as his best friend.

Summary: It all started with some offhand comment Jin Zixun had made about Wei Wuxian's father having been a servant. About how he should stick to that and not aim for places not meant for him. Wei Wuxian had been at a party at the time with Nie Huaisang and unlikely as it had been, Lan Wangji had been there too. Wei Wuxian had complained about money and that had seemingly inspired the comment from a man, who, Wei Wuxian was sure, had never worked a day in his life. Lan Wangji had stared at Jin Zixun so hard Wei Wuxian thought he might actually drop dead. Somehow, two months later, Wei Wuxian actually finds himself cleaning rich people’s houses. There are very few cultivators wiling to clean houses for other cultivators, but there is demand for it. You can't hire a regular maid to dust and clean your ancient artefacts, even just sword maintenance is a whole area of expertise that civilians aren't qualified to do. In which Wei Wuxian accidentally ends up cleaning his long-time friend's house and Lan Zhan's room harbours a secret.

"Wei-qianbei!" Jingyi shouts as he runs up to where Wei Ying had been previously definitely not trying to drink some of the wine he just got, in open space on his way to the jingshi. Definitely not. "Wei-qianbei, you need to address something for us!"
Behind Jingyi, Sizhui, Ouyang Zizhen and Jin Ling follow.
Wei Ying decides not to hide the booze because he has a feeling he's going to need a drink soon.
"What's up, little ones?"
"We aren't little!" Jingyi protests as he always does. "Anyways, you need to address the punching Jin Ling's dad allegations!"
Wei Ying blinks twice. "The what?"
Sizhui steps in. "We have heard some elder disciples recounting an event from your schooling here in the Cloud Recesses. They said-"
"They said you punched my dad! Square in the face! They said he was disfigured for a month!" Jin Ling cuts in, loud and scandalized. "Why would you do that?!"
Wei Ying takes a long sip of Emperor's Smile before speaking. "It's true, I did punch him. He was a tool at the time and I had to knock some sense into him cause nobody else would." A grin. "Granted, I did get kicked out of the Cloud Recesses after that, but, as Jingyi often says, a win is a win."
"So it really is true..." Zizhen's disappointed voice comes. "I really owe those disciples 300 coins...!"
"But... what did he even say that made you do that?" Jin Ling presses, as hungry for information about his parents as always.
"As I said, he was an asshole, and as I always teach you, fuck around and find out. Jin Zixuan found out that day and I like to think that was the very early beginning of him shaping up into a good man for your mom!"
"So, Wei-qianbei..." Jingyi starts, trying so hard to contain mischief. "...you're saying that sometimes it's justified to punch annoying people? Annoying Jin people especially?"
"No violence in the Cloud Recesses." Hanguang-Jun says as he comes up behind the kids, scaring the living daylights out of them. Wei Ying laughs.
"H-Hanguang-Jun! I didn't mean-"
"What about outside the Cloud Recesses?" Sizhui asks despite himself and immediately regrets it. He really shouldn't have said that, what will the seniors think of him now?!
"Act on your judgement." Hanguang-Jun responds simply, but it is easy to see for Wei Ying and Sizhui's trained eyes that he's trying not to laugh.
"Don't go punching people, though." Wei Ying chides. "Try to find a reasonable solution first, but don't let others trample over you and those you care about. If all else fails-"
"Fuck around and find out!" Jingyi solemnly recants.
Lan Wangji raises an eyebrow.
"I taught them that myself!" Wei Ying exclaims, prideful.
"Do not teach the children to swear, Wei Ying."
"I didn't! They already knew anyway! For instance, I heard Jingyi-"
"Wei-qianbei!"

i think it is extremely weird that parts of this fandom have just definitively decided that the principle antagonist is an irredeemably evil monster because he has his minion burn down a brothel (where said antagonist was born and abused and watched his mother suffer and die) with people still inside it, then hires a bunch of sex workers to rape his rapist dad (who raped so many women that he lost track of who his victims were, and ended up approving of a marriage between said antagonist and his own half-sister as a result) to death
when the protagonist’s chosen means of killing the people who razed the only home he’s ever known and murdered his foster parents involves 1) choking a woman to death by forcing a table leg down her throat, 2) forcing that dead woman to bite off a man’s genitals, and 3) forcing that man to eat his own legs. this plus the protagonist’s multiple day-long murder-torture bender where he kills and tortures a bunch of other wen sect disciples in front of each other, and owns doing this because it was fun and would have been too boring to kill then quickly. like jiang cheng and lan wangji find wwx by following the trail of bodies he leaves in his wake ok, that’s pretty awful
if wei wuxian can do these things and and still be considered good, then that only makes it harder for me to understand why jin guangyao is denied goodness
fun fact: when i describe both of these characters to people who are totally canon-blind and know nothing about mdzs, cql, or any of the other adaptations, the initial response from most people isn’t “hmmm but what was the protagonist’s interiority while he was making that woman’s corpse eat that man’s junk? was he very sad about it? that will surely tell me whether his corpse desecration and autocannibalism is morally defensible or not.” most of the time what they say is “ray what the fuck are you reading, both of those guys sound like evil people, i don’t care what their motivations are! also get help”
it just seems weird!! that certain corners of this fandom have decided that goodness is not only a quality that wwx intrinsically possesses (something i don’t necessarily disagree with fwiw), but that he gets to be defined by this goodness above all else. wwx gets situated at the centre of all subsequent discourse as the moral lighthouse of the whole novel—even though he has done objectively heinous shit entirely to satisfy his own desire for vengeance. doing all of those things does not detract from his fundamental goodness, in their estimation. or if it does, it doesn’t detract enough to significantly impact his role for them as the goodness barometer in the novel.
and that’s fine with me actually! if this is where the bar for what it means to be good in this novel is set, then it should logically follow that jin guangyao’s heinous actions can similarly be ‘offset’ by paying the appropriate ‘goodness tax’ through his other canon actions (e.g., loving and remaining filial to his mother, saving and protecting lan xichen, saving nie mingjue, funding the rebuilding of the cloud recesses, caring for his orphaned nephew, etc). he has done yuckydisgusting things, yes, but so has wwx! and as we all know, wwx is not evil! so jgy isn’t evil either!
…but this isn’t what happens in these conversations, because jgy seems to begin all fandom discourse at a goodness deficit that is depressingly reflective of the goodness deficit he experiences in the novel post-canon. (or, honestly, at the beginning of his life as meng yao.) and unlike wwx whose character gets to be defined principally by his goodness in spite of his genuinely horrendous acts of violence, jin guangyao’s whole character becomes defined by his horrendous acts of violence in spite of his goodness, even though the text demonstrates clearly that their capacity for both good and evil is evenly matched.
tl;dr it would be nice if the goodness goalposts would stop moving around so much in these discussions. maybe we should just get rid of them entirely.
