Coraline.
Beware of the button eyes 🪡🔘
I can’t believe I haven’t seen this movie until recently. Seriously, every single Stuido Laika film I’ve seen is incredible.

hi, can I ask you something? I'm making a list of recent animated movies to watch, what would you recommend?
ABSOLUTELY!
Shane Acker’s 9. A bit of a mess, clearly there was more story they wanted to tell, but their budget was tight, and Shane was exhausted. But it is a gorgeous, post apocalyptic film. I believe it is not Netflix now!
Tumblr media
Mune. A French animated film about a fawn who is chosen to be the new guardian of the moon. A beautiful blend of 3-D and 2-D animation. Can be found on Netflix.
Tumblr media
The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Based loosely on the book by the same name, this is a really fun, gorgeous stop-motion film directed by Wes Anderson. A lot of dry wit, and a lot of beautiful lighting and scenery.
Tumblr media
Song of the Sea. From Stuido Saloon, an Irish based animation company, this film is about a young selkie trying to get her coat back before the fae world comes to an end. Lots of cute interactions between Ben and Saoirse as they try to resolve their differences and help save each other.
Tumblr media
Paranorman. A story about a boy who can see ghosts. And has a deep fascination of zombies and all things dead. Gorgeous stop motion animation, beautiful emotion, just a really well-rounded film from Laika!
Tumblr media
In the same vein. Kubo and the Two Strings. Another film from Laika about a young Japanese boy who takes on a difficult journey in search of a way to defend himself from the Lord of the Moon. I cried. You’ll cry. Everyone cries.
Tumblr media
Whisper of the Heart. One of Ghibli’s lesser-known films, but the spring board of the latter film The Cat Returns (also recommended!). The story of a young girl who is struggling to find herself... but finds herself through a violin, a cracked rock, and a mysterious antique shop.
Tumblr media
The Book of Life. Just. Gorgeous. A lot of story going on in this, but the characters are lovable and my goodness is the style just absolutely beautiful and creative!
Tumblr media
How to Train Your Dragon/How to Train Your Dragon 2. Both of these moves are absolutely gorgeous. The story is sweet, clear. But they never pull their punches. Everything has a risk, and there are consequences. The second movie has some of the most beautiful textures and physics I have ever seen in a movie. Two of my favorites, must see!
Tumblr media
Brave. An absolutely gorgeous film from Pixar. Not the strongest storywise, but has one of my favorite princesses and favorite environments. Very gorgeous lighting, design, unconventional character designs.
Tumblr media
Big Hero 6. I. Love this movie. A really strong lead who often falls in the morally gray area, and a good talk on health and grief and support. Beautiful world exploration, too!
Tumblr media
Wreck-It Ralph. VILLAIN AS A PROTAGANIST AND IT’S NOT A “RETELLING” STORY. One of Disney’s best. Really fun set up, really cute designs, fun worlds... an amazing twist end that was really set up amazingly well.
Tumblr media
Coco. HANDS DOWN. ONE OF PIXAR’S BEST. JUST... THE LOVE THAT WENT INTO THIS MOVIE HURTS ME SO MUCH. AND MY GOSH... IT’S SO GOOD. SO. GOOD.
Tumblr media
The Croods. Often forgotten, but my gosh. Some of DreamWorks most interesting world building and fun character designs (thank you Chris Sanders). Story of a family of cavemen forced out of the safety of their cave, learning to live in a new, changing world.
Tumblr media
Zootopia. Anthro animals. Done. Right. A really fun story, really cute and fun leads--some amazing world building! Just. Lots of designs that are unique and functional. A good lesson about prejudices and chasing your dreams.
Tumblr media
A Monster in Paris. Another French film! Really pretty, fun designs. Good music! Amazing colors. A bit of a wild story with lots of plot points, but my gosh, Is it fun!
Tumblr media
Ernest and Celestine. One more French film! This one is on Netflix and is absolutely adorable and sweet. Very simple, but my goodness, is it darling and fun! A mouse befriends a bear. And that... is all i will say, because it is so cute.
Tumblr media
The Little Prince. LAST FRENCH ONE, I PROMISE. A beautiful balance of stop motion and CGI. A true coming of age story and handling growing up with grace and fun, without losing any child-like glowing love of life.
Tumblr media
Rise of the Guardians. One of Dreamworks criminally underrated films. Some of my favorite characters ever. Pretty worlds, fun take on holidays... The worlds best Santa Claus ever! And omg, those effects... just some gorgeous, gorgeous effects...
Tumblr media
Lotte Reiniger’s Cinderella (and others works!). An early animation done entirely in puppets and stop motion filming. Reiniger’s work here is astounding and is a must see for any animation lover!
Tumblr media
I have a lot more, but i’m afraid I might crash this window if I keep adding more! Friends, feel free to recommend more!!!
