Recommend me some sci-fi fluff
I need a light and hopeful palate cleanser and I don’t have anything in my TBR that looks appropriate.  Recent completions are:
The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal (very good but too true to its 50s setting to be comfortable - I’ll be reading the sequels but I needed a break first)
Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (well worth the read but there was a lot of hard stuff to get through - worth it in the end, a very strange and enjoyable book)
Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty (almost DNF this one and I’m still not really sure how I feel about it, but it was pretty bleak and frustrating at times)
Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (extremely gothic and dense, reading it was like digging a hole on the beach at high tide, and there was no satisfaction at the end - I’m sure it blew their minds in 1818 though)
Truth of the Divine by Lindsay Ellis (just finished an hour ago and boy do i feel desolate - it was engaging for sure but did not leave me feeling hopeful and elevated)
I unfortunately did not space out the Murderbot books or Becky Chambers’ stuff so right now my TBR is Baru Cormorant book 3, the Lady Astronaut sequels, and a couple of things that don’t come out until later this year (TLT book 3, Monk and Robot book 2).  I could really use some suggestions for sci-fi/space opera or hope punk/solarpunk books that might help me feel uplifted before I dive back into the heavy stuff.  Possibly also some fantasy stuff, but I am just not feeling any epic deeds right now.  Character driven >> action driven for me.
Send me an ask or drop a comment!  Thanks

The novel "The Calculating Stars" by Mary Robinette Kowal was published for the first time in 2018. It's the first novel in the Lady Astronaut series. It won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards as the Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year and the Sidewise Award for Alternate History Novel of the Year.
In 1952, a meteorite hits the Earth in the Chesapeake Bay. The short-term consequence is the destruction of Washington D.C. and most of the east coast of the USA. In subsequent years, temperatures drop but scientists' calculations indicate that the heat absorbed by the water will be released over the years causing strong and rapid global warming.
The International Aerospace Coalition is formed to develop a space program capable of colonizing the Moon and reaching Mars. Elma York was a pilot in the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II but the newly formed astronaut corps accepts only men and they're all white.

I'm sure this won't surprise a single person but I reread The Martian and it's just as good the second time

BOOKS
A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle. Letters from Watson sent this from January to March, alongside a couple of other shorts ("The Field Bazaar" and "The Man with the Watches"). An interesting thing about it is that Sherlock was portrayed as somewhat bitter on the issue of credit (he does all the work, subpar investigators take underserved glory), while he's usually, in both ACD's later works and adaptations, portrayed as ~above such feelings. "The Field Bazaar" was interesting in that, in describing why Watson is a good "foil" for Sherlock's smarts in the books, actually illuminates why I think the smart investigator/fumbling idiot dynamic just. Fucking sucks for me lol. I don't get a kick out of it, I much prefer when they pair two investigator of different talents and portray those as both interesting and helpful in their investigations.
Investigating Lois Lane: The Turbulent History of the Daily Planet's Ace Reporter by Tim Hanley. Amazing read. It takes you through the history of the character, often looking at it through the lense of real-life issues and movements, getting into the different eras, adaptations, etc. It's giving me a lot to think about, both within the dc fandom and outside it.
Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. This one I also read in substack newsletters, going for about a year, the last one being sent in March. It was a reread, and I maintain it's a book everyone should at least try to read. Inferno is by far my favourite part (the theology lessons in Paradise grate on me, in comparison).
Batman: The Ultimate Evil by Andrew Vachss. This book was written by a crime fiction author and attorney that specialices in representing children and in child abuse cases, who was approached by DC to write a book featuring Batman facing child sex trafficking. In the book, Bruce ends up discovering that his mother, Martha Wayne, was a sociologist who was investigating a child molester ring, and that's what caused their deaths. That's what caught my eye first, because really, how many canons give any weight and importance to Martha? If they opt to make the Wayne murders a conspiracy, it's always about Thomas's actions. I also appreciated that, even though the author clearly had to follow some dc-mandated lines (fictional country, individual villain), he practically hits you with a hammer when it comes to dispel a lot of the myths we have about child molesters and how they operate, specifically to challenge those dc-mandated lines. I wish we'd seen more of the social worker character, but I liked her as it was.
Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata. I picked this novella exclusively for vibes and not plot, and it's what it gave me. It's also made me think a lot about how men see women, and how through their eyes our selves are twisted. Komako and Yoko are fascinating characters in part for how inescrutable the male lead finds them and how he might be misunderstanding them. There's so, so much hinted under the surface, about their persons and about their relationship.
The Lady Astronaut of Mars by Mary Robinette Kowal. Short novelette I picked on a whim. A 60+ yo astronaut is offered a chance to travel to space again, her dream come true. She has to choose between taking it, or staying with her ailing husband, who has little time left. The story apparently later expanded on some novels/prequels, I might pick them up.
COMICS
Secret Origins 80-Page Giant. I picked this one up for Steph's story (I'm going through her comic arcs), but ended up reading all the others. It's cemented my desire to pick up the Young Justice comics. These teens are sooooo chaotic and fun lmao, all of them (back then) with such weird and interesting backstories.
Lois Lane (1986). A two-part issue that shows Lois getting in deep in an investigation about child abductions. It's gets gruesome and heavy at times, but it's a great read, specially for her character. It shows Lois at a moment that the mainline comics seem to have ignored (she missed out on a great professional opportunity due to Superman), and it shows how obsessive she gets and how that is what makes her a great investigator and reporter. I also liked the glimpse at the dynamic between her and her sister Lucy there, how dismissive Lois was of Lucy's stewardess' job, for example.
DC First: Batgirl/Joker. I don't like it as much as the early-Batgirl (2000) run but it's kind of on that vein. Barbara tells Cass about her first encounter with the Joker, and Cass is determined to prove herself against him. I loved the art as well (very different than in the cover).

Pathfinders in Space (ABC, 1960)
"Now, the remainder of us have fifteen hours of oxygen left. That leaves fifteen hours in which to complete our research here."
"Well, what's the good of all that if you can't come back with it?"
"The moon never destroys her treasures, Henderson. We shall leave a record and it'll be preserved in the vacuum of the caves. And the future expeditions you mentioned, they will find it."
#pathfinders in space#1960#children's television#classic tv#abc#malcolm hulke#eric paice#guy verney#peter williams#gerald flood#harold goldblatt#richard dean#gillian ferguson#stewart guidotti#pamela barney#irene sutcliffe#hugh evans#astor sklair#michael guest#the first sequel to the seminal (and sadly entirely lost) serial Target Luna; for reasons best known to the production team‚ despite being#a direct sequel with the same characters‚ every major role was recast for Pathfinders (and so sadly we don't get to see a young Michael#Craze). often described as a precursor to DW‚ and honestly that's hard to deny: this might be the first uk kids sci fi serial to really#nail that family friendly vibe‚ with enough interest for both children and adult viewers alike. it's a rare gift that it exists complete#and finally getting to it i found it a genuinely compelling series. it can be a little cheesy and a little silly in places (adorably‚ our#astronauts take a full tea service to the moon and regularly stop for tea) but i actually ended up learning some stuff about the moon from#this 64 yr old series. Gerald Flood's everyman journalist is a nicely constructed audience avatar but it's missing cheese expert Peter#Williams who gives the orders (and regularly imperils his own children). a lot of fun! well worth seeking out for old tv fans#also needless to say the various miniatures and fx work is frankly adorable.#and shoutout to Prof Mary Meadows‚ it's nice to have a kickass lady scientist in a show this old (and who remains cooler and more capable#than her male counterparts on more than one occasion).

Hi, I just wanted to say Nhthcth is my favorite TMA fic ever.(sorry this is so long)
The different ways it’s written is so cool and fun, I especially like the bit in the theater with Grimaldi. The characterization is amazing - I love your Jon so much, he’s been through so much, but is still trying to help everyone in anyway he can(just like in the podcast), not to mention you’ve somehow made a character that literally never shows up in the podcast be so fun and enthralling (I can’t imagine Danny in any other way now)
I know there are a billion AU TMA fics out there, but so many of them are time-travel fix-it (which is fine, some of them are really cool) But I really like what-if type fanfics, and yours is, in my opinion, one of the best out there.
I could literally go on about it for days, it’s so good! Once I get an ao3 account, I will probably comment on like every chapter, picking out the bits I really like; if you don’t mind that is, I don’t want to spam you with comments on old chapters. (Sorry if this is weird or creepy, I just really like your fic)
y'all are sooo kind thank you so much you guys make my day
the theatre bit with Grimaldi i feel actually ended up being pivotal to how nhthcth ended up being written. I remember that when I first tried writing that chapter, I struggled a bit with how to best convey the stranger, and I ended up experimenting with the theatre script format and it just clicked. then, danny and jon were trying to outrun a REALLY fucked up clown and danny was catching jon when he was jumping and kicking grimaldi in the face and i was like "oh this is fun. this is so much fun" and it kind of gave the license lean into more experimental formatting and a little bit of slapstick. that chapter/scene really changed a lot of how i approached nhthcth for the better.
Danny is one of my FAVORITE characters in nhthcth and he actually isn't fully from nhthcth. I have this really elaborate, ridiculously long story plotted out that I affectionally call the himbois AU starring Gerry, Jon, and Danny. the idea is that Jon has a run-in with Agnes Montague while he's still at university and finds himself free of strings that Mother would really rather he kept in, and somehow spiraled into Jon, Gerry, and an amnesiac Danny Stoker running a ghost hunting youtube channel as a cover for supernatural shenanigans that accidentally blew up and became famous. it's basically just buzzed unsolved and famous for the air of skepticism they bring to supernatural investigations--because jon and gerry could NOT take some old houses with bad insulation seriously when they were on the run from the spider that tried to eat jon in childhood.
i actually got back into fanfiction because of it--i wasn't publishing anything for years, just writing it for myself, and then i started explaining this story to a friend who was really into it, and especially danny's character. when i decided to start putting my stuff out there, I already had nhthcth planned and decided to try for that one. danny stoker was already in the plans for, but he wasn't anywhere close to the danny that ended up in the final product of nhthcth. i ended up adapting the danny from the himbois AU for my friend who loved him so much, and he's much better for it.
i think i'll always be partial to himbois!Danny as like, my favorite mental version of danny stoker, but nhthcth!danny is extremely important to me too. i'm really thrilled that so many other people have found him to be important to them too

Okay so the scene where Jimmy drops Buster off the catwalk is near dead silent for Effect but like. His mouth is wide open the whole time, he had to be screaming right? And Rosita had to have heard him, else she just happened to look off stage at the exact right moment. Could the audience hear him too, or was the music too loud? Think how the whole troupe felt down there, hearing him scream as he falls to his death and they couldn't do anything 🥺
